  • NYC subway straphanger jumps over MTA new turnstile spikes at Manhattan station

    That didn’t take long.

An outraged NYC stranger wasted no time outsmarting the MTA as he hopped over a subway turnstile while showing little regard for the newly installed spikes designed to deter fare evaders on Thursday night.

The unidentified subway rider easily vaulted over the metal gate less than 36 hours after they were placed at the 59th Street/Lexington Avenue station, a Post photographer captured.

A metal sheet with sharp edges along the top and side was installed between each gate entrance at the station.

An NYC straphanger wasted no time in exploiting the MTA’s newly placed spikes at the 59th Street/Lexington Avenue station on Jan. 16, 2025. Christopher Sadowski

The man was caught off guard by the Metropolitan Transit Authority’s latest crackdown attempt, but it didn’t stop him from exploiting the flaws in the transit authority’s design.

“Oh, so now I gotta jump over it? Okay, I don’t give a f–k, I’ll jump over it,” a Post photographer overheard the man say.

The careless commuter — wearing a sweatshirt highlighting the animated show “Rick and Morty” — placed his left foot on the bottom ridge of the gate and propelled himself up with his right hand.

Placing his left hand on the metal spikes, the man jumped over the pole of the turnstile, clearing the gate and walking free to a train with no one stopping him.

The MTA — which installed the new apparatuses at the station that borders the Midtown and the Upper East Side Wednesday — did not reveal the cost for the spiky metal sheets.

It was unknown if other subway stops would be getting similar devices.

Several commuters who frequent the station — which services the N, R, W, 4, 5 and 6 lines — were not thrilled with the new gate feature.

“I don’t think it’s going to prevent anyone from jumping the turnstiles,” Veronica Pisani, 40, told The Post Wednesday.

Pisani, a building manager who lives in the Fordham area of the Bronx, called the hardware “silly and foolish” and a waste of money.

“I see fare evasion all the time. People will find a way. I just don’t really think this is [an effective] preventative measure,” she said.

Fare evasion costs the MTA roughly $500 million annually. The transit giant has been trying for years to recover the lost revenue.

It isn’t the first time an anti-fare evasion strategy was beaten.

In 2023, the MTA installed pricey new gates designed to block fare evaders, but the $700,000 electronic panel doors were shown on TikTok being defeated with a simple hack.

The man cleared the turnstile and was free to get on any train with no one stopping him. Christopher Sadowski

Last December the MTA OK’d a fare hike to $3 per swipe, 10 cents above the current $2.90 per swipe, as it spent nearly $1.3 billion on 435 new subway cars.

“This is a good deal,” MTA chairman and CEO Janno Lieber said of the price hike, after approving a budget plan that anticipates the 4% hike in fares from the current by the second half of 2025.

In a daring stunt that left fellow commuters in awe, a NYC subway straphanger managed to jump over the new turnstile spikes installed by the MTA at a Manhattan station.

Eyewitnesses reported that the individual, described as a young man in his 20s, approached the turnstile with confidence before effortlessly leaping over the spikes and landing on the other side without breaking a sweat.

Photos and videos of the incident quickly went viral on social media, with many praising the straphanger for his agility and quick thinking. Some even joked that he should consider joining the Olympics as a high jumper.

While the MTA has yet to comment on the incident, it has sparked a debate among New Yorkers about the effectiveness of the new turnstile spikes in deterring fare evasion.

Regardless of where you stand on the issue, one thing is for sure – this subway straphanger definitely knows how to make an entrance.

  • Congestion pricing will cost up to $27 to drive into Manhattan

Congestion pricing will cost up to $27 to drive into Manhattan

New congestion pricing will lead to cars being charged up to $27 total to cross into Manhattan during the day with van and truck drivers facing even higher costs — and firefighters, teachers and ordinary workers say they simply can’t afford it.

As The Post’s map shows, the cost of entering the congestion zone, defined as entering Manhattan anywhere on 60th Street or below, in a car from Jan. 5 will be significantly higher —between $9 and $20 with an E-ZPass and $13.50 to $27 without — when added to the fare for crossing by tunnel or some bridges.

Business owners warn the deeply unpopular charge — forced through by Gov. Kathy Hochul and not voted for by any New Yorker — will affect everyone in the city, as they will be forced to pass on their increased costs to customers.

Drivers are about to be slapped with higher costs to enter Manhattan below 60th Street, with the new congestion charge and fees for using bridges or tunnels.

Currently over 700,000 vehicles enter the congestion charge area in Manhattan daily, according to the Metropolitan Transport Authority, traveling at an average of just 7 mph. With the congestion charge, the authority thinks it can reduce that number by around 100,000 vehicles.

Small trucks such as delivery vehicles will pay a congestion toll around $5 higher during peak periods. Large trucks and tour buses will pay a congestion charge of $21.60 alongside any bridge or tunnel costs during peak periods, defined as 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends.

Those riding in the city’s yellow taxis will also face increased charges, with $2.50 added to any trips which “begin, end or pass through Manhattan south of 96th Street,” for congestion pricing.

It’s yet another major blow to those grappling with the high cost of living in New York — already the third-most expensive city in the world, according to a recent survey by the Economist.

    Small business owner: Larry Zogby

Delivery service companies are facing an eye-watering increase in costs and expect to be among the hardest hit by the congestion prices, according to several sources who spoke to The Post.

While a cap of one charge per day applies to cars and motorbikes, trucks, vans and buses will be charged for every crossing into the congestion zone, according to the MTA.

Larry Zogby told The Post he is “furious” that authorities aren’t listening to his and other small business owners’ concerns about congestion pricing. Courtesy of Larry Zogby

RDS Delivery Service president and CEO Larry Zogby claimed congestion pricing will cost his business, run out of Long Island City in Queens to all New York boroughs, more than a million dollars annually.

“Nobody I speak to in business can absorb this, so they’re going to take it and pass it right on,” he told The Post.

“It’ll be my second-biggest cost behind payroll, at over $1 million pushed to the customer.”

The company’s drivers enter the congestion zone more than 40,000 times a year to deliver everything from medical specimens and pharmaceutical supplies to food for senior citizens, according to Zogby.

Congestion pricing is aimed at reducing traffic and encouraging people to use public transport, those in favor claim.

The money raised via the tolls will primarily be used to upgrade the city’s decaying subway system and buses, according to the MTA.

But Zogby claims the entire plan is “a sham” and says “everyone is swimming in the same s—t.”

New York City sees over 700,000 vehicles enter the congestion zone below 60th Street in Manhattan on weekdays, and vehicles average under 10 mph. John Angelillo/UPI/Shutterstock

“It’s a money grab,” he said.

“They don’t consider small commercial businesses with trucks and vans. More thought should have been put into this.”

There are 10 lawsuits pending against the toll program in federal and state courts in New York and New Jersey.

“People … need to brace themselves and be prepared for the impact,” Zogby said, adding: “Because it’s the customer who gets screwed.”

    Firefighters

An FDNY probationary firefighter, who spoke to The Post on the condition of anonymity, said the general consensus among his colleagues is that they’re “being taxed to work” in Manhattan.

“I would normally drive into work but the expense is a lot more than I expected.

“Very few people in my academy class wanted to get assigned downtown because of congestion pricing but we don’t get to pick where we go.

“It’s a large portion of my pay and an unfair cost.”

While the source said he will no longer drive his car into Manhattan to carry out his job, there are no reasonable alternatives, according to him.

FDNY union boss Andrew Ansbro told The Post that many firefighters use their own cars to move from one firehouse to another with all of their gear. fdny_ufa/Instagram
Traffic and congestion are a constant on NYC streets across Manhattan, often accompanied by the sound of car horns. John Angelillo/UPI/Shutterstock

“If I take the train into work from Long Island, I frequently get sent to another firehouse as that’s part of the job, but I won’t be bringing in my car anymore because of the expense, so I’d have to walk with 40 to 60 pounds of gear or take an Uber,” he said.

“In your firehouse, you have your own locker, so it’s stored there, so if you get reassigned to another firehouse or sent across town, you have to take all of that with you. Every day a couple hundred FDNY firefighters are reassigned to another firehouse to fill in as needed.

“Pants, jackets, boots and helmet are a minimum of 45 pounds for a small person. Then you have your own personal tools: screwdriver, wrench, hose wrench. You also have to be prepared to decontaminate after a fire, so have to bring your toiletries and a spare set of clothing, towel, soap and shampoo.

“All of these things going to have to be carried from one point to another and when the weather is bad, like in a blizzard, or the city is jammed by traffic — how are we supposed to get from point A to point B?”

The Big Apple’s firefighters’ union boss anticipates the pricing will have a catastrophic effect on the city’s firefighters, who use their own cars to move themselves and their work equipment between their homes and various firehouses.

“A huge portion of city fire are going to be lugging 80 pounds of gear on subways to get from one firehouse to another because they can’t bring their own vehicles in anymore,” FDNY Uniformed Firefighters Association of Greater New York president Andrew Ansbro told The Post.

“The equipment is covered in dangerous carcinogens that are unsafe to carry on public transit.

“And the last thing any New Yorker wants is a firefighter who is worn out before they even get to work when you then need them to come and save your life.”

New York City has struggled with traffic for decades and is one of the busiest and most congested cities in the US. ZUMAPRESS.com

The firefighters union has called on the MTA to exempt members from paying the $15 toll when driving their personal cars to firehouses within the zone below 60th Street.

But it has so far been unsuccessful, with the MTA putting the onus on the FDNY to provide company cars to employees who need them or reimburse their work expenses for required travel.

“The law is clear, personal vehicles are not considered emergency vehicles,” Ansbro continued.

“If the FDNY were to designate emergency vehicles, that would solve the problem, or we would have to work something out with members to reimburse them for using their own vehicles, but for now it leaves New York firefighters at a great disadvantage.”

    Brooklyn plumber: Paul Belli

Paul Belli, a small business owner in Brooklyn, said he’s also concerned about the ripple effect.

“Everyone I know in the plumbing industry is planning on passing the cost along to the customers by increasing prices or adding a surcharge, which is what we’re going to have to do as well,” he told The Post.

Belli, president of Franco Belli Plumbing, said he and his team are called to jobs all over the city.

Small business owner and plumber Paul Belli told The Post that most affected companies, including his, will have to add the toll onto the bills of people they service. Courtesy of Paul Bell
Traveling by car isn’t easy in New York, but for many workers and businesses, it is essential. Michael Nagle

The company’s plumbers use cars that are all fitted with E-ZPasses paid for by the employer. So it’s Belli’s small, family business started by his late father in 1974, and others like it, that will ultimately feel the pinch of congestion pricing.

“We go where people need plumbing work done. I get calls to Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx,” Belli, who is also the company’s licensed master plumber, explained.

“The congestion pricing increase is going to cost the business hundreds of dollars extra a week and we need to be able to make that back somehow, so it’s going to be added to the bills of people we service in that part of Manhattan.”

Paul Caminiti drives from Staten Island to work in the East Village and will be impacted by congestion pricing. Brian Zak/NY Post

    School teacher: Paul Caminiti

Paul Caminiti regularly commutes from his home in Staten Island to the East Village, where he works as a teacher. He drives to and from the school each day because the trip is 40 minutes each way by car compared to 90 minutes on public transport, according to him.

“[I pay] about $13 a day, sometimes $20 to get from Staten Island to the East Village with no real reliable buses or trains to get to,” he told The Post.

“Now we’ll have to pay extra because of an idiot governor. She clearly can’t read a room. Nine dollars is too much … I will not vote for her or any other idiot that goes for congestion pricing.”

Congestion pricing exists in several other major cities worldwide, including London, Milan and Singapore.

Congestion pricing in Manhattan is set to begin in 2023, and drivers may soon have to pay up to $27 to drive into the bustling city center. This new fee is part of a plan aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality in the area.

The congestion pricing program will charge drivers a fee to enter Manhattan below 60th Street during peak hours. The exact fee has not yet been finalized, but estimates suggest it could range from $10 to $27 for cars and $25 to $35 for trucks.

While some are in favor of the congestion pricing plan, arguing that it will help reduce traffic congestion and incentivize the use of public transportation, others are concerned about the financial burden it will place on drivers, particularly those who rely on their cars for work or other essential activities.

As the implementation of congestion pricing approaches, it will be important for drivers to plan ahead and consider alternative modes of transportation to avoid the hefty fees. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing issue.

Harlem postal worker killed: Woman charged after USPS employee stabbed inside deli while working in Manhattan, NYC

HARLEM, Manhattan (WABC) — A woman has been charged after a USPS worker was stabbed and killed inside a deli while on the job in Harlem on Thursday afternoon, police said.

Jaia Cruz, 24, of Harlem was charged with the murder of 36-year-old Ray Hodges, according to police.

Officers responded to the deli at 168 Lenox Avenue after 2:30 p.m. and found Hodges stabbed or slashed multiple times inside the deli, including in the torso, arms, back and neck.

He was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem where he was pronounced dead.

“I know the guys that deliver mail,” said resident Uzo Guchiaschi. “And just like this he’s gone. It’s very scary. It’s very, very scary.”

Police say the attack appears to have stemmed from a dispute between two customers over who ordered first, then turned physical.

    A weapon has been recovered.

Eyewitness News spoke to a friend of the person of interest, and while she did not know what, or why this happened, she said it’s not in her friend’s character to have attacked someone without a reason. She said her friend wouldn’t have hurt someone unless provoked.

“She’s a nice young lady. She is not the type that just come out in the street an attacking people,” the friend said. “This is just a bad neighborhood. What happened — I have no idea because I was not around yet. I don’t know, but I do know, if she said it was in self defense, it was in self defense.”

Meanwhile, a group of distraught postal workers arrived on the scene, solemn and visibly shaken, struggling with how to process what happened to their colleague.

“All I’m going to say is he was a nice young man. That’s it,” said postal worker Kathy Singleton.

They say he went into the deli to buy a sandwich when the confrontation unfolded.

Deli workers had a similar account, telling Eyewitness News that the dispute was over a sandwich and who placed their order first.

Hodges’ postal cart was still sitting on the sidewalk outside Thursday night.

The United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) released a statement confirming that the postal worker was assigned to Manhattan, and was the victim of a homicide.

“USPIS takes matters involving the safety and wellbeing of postal service employees as a top priority. We are working diligently with the New York City Police Department on this investigation,” the statement said.

It’s unclear what weapon the postal worker was stabbed and slashed with.

    The investigation is ongoing.

  • Man escapes death after being pushed onto subway tracks in Chelsea, Manhattan; suspect charged with attempted murder

Man escapes death after being pushed onto subway tracks in Chelsea, Manhattan; suspect charged with attempted murder

CHELSEA, Manhattan (WABC) — A man pushed into the path of an oncoming subway train in Manhattan narrowly escaped death, as the suspect in the case found he could not evade authorities.

Chilling video obtained by Eyewitness News shows a man standing close to the edge of the platform behind a couple of fare evaders, and another man approaching and casually shoving him in front of a 1 train just after 1:30 Tuesday afternoon at 18th Street.

First responders went between the stopped subway cars to rescue the 45-year-old victim and take him to Bellevue Hospital.

Sources tell Eyewitness News that the victim is a New York City resident and is in stable condition but suffered broken ribs and a fractured skull.

Less than an hour after the attack, a suspect was in custody. He was identified as Kamel Hawkins, 23, of Brooklyn.

A witness recounted the violent shove to Eyewitness News.

“It was absolutely violent, just a full lounge shove towards the man just pushing him onto the tracks, the man screamed as he was falling,” the witness said.

A horrific act just feet away from witness Andrea, her hands were still shaking.

The young professional in the Beauty industry did not want to be identified but her eyes filled with tears as she was informed that the victim seen here beingpushed directly in the path of an oncoming one train survived.

“I don’t know how, this poor man,” Andrea said.

Hawkins was quickly apprehended and held at 59th Street thanks to transit officers looking for the person in the video. He is charged with attempted murder and assault as a felony. He was ordered held and Hawkins is due back in court on Monday, January 6.

Hawkins, according to the NYP, has 9 prior arrests. On Octover 12th, 2024 he was charged with assault, harassment and weapons possession. In June of 2019 he was charged with the assault of an NYPD officer, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct.

“I actually got a very weird vibe from him, I don’t know if it was the way he dressed. He had a facemask on. He had his hood up, made eye contact with him, just got a very weird vibe. So I just immediately sat down on the bench,” Andrea said.

Andrea ran to call 911. Cameras had already picked up the suspect and he was arrested quickly nearby.

I just panicked even just telling this story now I’m just starting to shake,” Andrea said.

Mayor Adams defended his efforts to get people off the subway system who are sleeping or seem like they need mental health services. He pointed to lower crime on the subway in 2024 and declines overall since 2009, but admits the perception just does not match the reality.

“People don’t want to hear that. They say, ‘someone just got burned, Eric.’ If someone is shoved to the subway system on the tracks, people are seeing and feeling what they’re reading. So our success is overshadowed,” Adams said.

The cameras that help lead to arrests also make the disturbing crimes more visible to more people.

Police believe the attack was random, they say he did not know the victim and said nothing to him before pushing him in front of the train.

Ten interchangeable graphic cards offer a range of simple high-contrast images to more complex colored patterns and graphics to foster visual development. Graphic cards are labeled by age to guide you with recommended graphics to use as baby’s vision develops. Adjustable cord on the Infant Stim-Mobile allows you to easily change distance of graphics from baby as their vision develops. Baby toy suitable for newborns up to 5 months old; Wimmer-Ferguson toy graphics and designs are based on scientific research of visual development in early infancy.
BLACK AND WHITE DEVELOPMENTAL TOYS: From Manhattan Toy’s award winning Wimmer-Ferguson infant collection – the original innovator of black and white developmental toys. The patterns of all Wimmer-Ferguson products adapt to baby’s changes in visual development by featuring a range of design complexity and color, inspired by laboratory research.
INFANT STIM-MOBILE FOR CRIBS DETAILS: Introduces baby to high contrast images and colors for early visual development with a hanging mobile over little one’s crib. Ten interchangeable cards offer a range of simple to more complex colored patterns and graphics.
ADAPTABLE FOR BABY’S GROWTH: Adjustable cord on the Stim-Mobile allows you to easily change distance of cards from baby as they grow and their vision develops (keep out of reach, however). Graphic cards are labeled by age to guide you with recommended graphics as baby grows.
VISUALLY APPEALING HIGH CONTRAST TOY FOR INFANTS: Professional research has shown that newborns are more attracted to high-contrast patterns than to color or brightness alone. The Wimmer-Ferguson Infant Stim-Mobile for Cribs was designed for this purpose, encouraging baby to learn pattern recognition from the start.
WIMMER-FERGUSON COLLECTION BY MANHATTAN TOY: The developmental toys for babies and infants in the Wimmer-Ferguson collection encourage eye-hand coordination, gross motor activity, self-awareness, sense of object permanence and experience with cause and effect.
