    PM Modi Mourns Manmohan Singh


    India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, shortly after AIIMS-Delhi announced that former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is no more.

    “India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives,” Prime Minister Modi said in a post on X.

    The AIIMS said in a statement that 92-year-old Dr Singh was under treatment for age-related conditions. Today, he lost consciousness at home. “Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to the Medical Emergency at AIIMS at 8.06 PM. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9.51 PM,” the hospital said.

    Union Home Minister Amit Shah too expressed his condolences on the death of Dr Singh, widely regarded as the architect of India’s economic reforms under the PV Narasimha Rao government.

    “The news of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s passing is very sad. From the Governor of Reserve Bank of India to the Finance Minister and then Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh fulfilled major responsibilities in the country’s administration. I express my condolences to his family and supporters. May God give peace to his soul and strength to his family to bear this loss,” Mr Shah said in a post on X.

    Singh was admitted to the emergency ward of Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at around 8 pm. The veteran Congress leader retired from the Rajya Sabha in April after 33-year-long stint in the Upper House.

    Dr Manmohan Singh served as prime minister of India from 2004 to 2014.

    “With profound grief, we inform the demise of the former Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh, aged 92. He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had a sudden loss of consciousness at home on 26 December 2024. 

    Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to the Medical Emergency at AIIMS, New Delhi at 8:06 PM. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM,” the AIIMS said in a statement. 

    Singh is survived by his wife Gurcharan Singh and three daughters.

    Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and her mother Sonia Gandhi reached the hospital as soon as the news of his hospitalisation became known.

    Singh, who was finance minister under the then prime minister P V Narasimha Rao, was the architect and the brainchild of economic reforms in 1991 that pulled India from the brink of bankruptcy and ushered in an era of economic liberalisation that is widely believed to have changed the course of India’s economic trajectory.

    Union health minister, JP Nadda, posted on the micro-blogging site X, “The passing of Former Prime Minister and Economist Shri Manmohan Singh ji is an immense loss for the nation. A visionary statesman and a stalwart of Indian politics, throughout his remarkable career in public service, he consistently voiced for the welfare of the downtrodden. His leadership earned admiration and respect across party lines. Shri Manmohan Singh ji’s legacy will continue to inspire generations in their pursuit of nation-building. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and admirers.”

    Former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh was on Thursday admitted to the emergency department of Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at around 8 pm.

    Sources told PTI that the 92-year-old veteran Congressman’s health condition is critical.

    Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra arrived at the premier institute to take stock of Singh’s health condition.

    Former Rajasthan chief minister and senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot posted on X,”Deeply concerned about the health of Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh ji. Wishing him a speedy recovery and good health.”

    Singh, who served as the prime minister from 2004 to 2014, retired from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year, ending his political innings in the Upper House after 33 years.

    India’s only Sikh prime minister entered the Rajya Sabha in 1991, four months after he was sworn in as the finance minister in June 1991 in the government headed by PV Narasimha Rao.

    He represented Assam for five terms in the Upper House and shifted to Rajasthan in 2019.

    His last intervention in Parliament was against demonetisation, describing it as an “organised loot and legalised plunder”.

    “Unemployment is high and the informal sector is in shambles, a crisis precipitated by the ill considered demonetisation decision taken in 2016”, he said at “Pratheeksha 2030,” PTI quoted Singh as saying at an event in 2021.

    Born on September 26, 1932 in Punjab, Singyh received his received his Bachelor’s and Master’s in Economics from Panjab University in 1952 and 1954 respectively.

    Dr. Manmohan Singh completed his Economic Tripos from Cambridge University in 1957. He followed this with a D.Phil in Economics from Oxford University in 1962.

    After teaching stints at the Punjab University and the Delhi School of Economics, Singh joined the Government of India as Economic Advisor in the Commerce Ministry in 1971.

    Dr Manmohan Singh was soon promoted to Chief Economic Advisor in the Finance Ministry in 1972.

    After a short stint at the UNCTAD Secretariat, he was appointed Secretary General of the South Commission in Geneva from 1987-1990. Singh also held the positions of Secretary in the Finance Ministry, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Advisor to the Prime Minister and Chairman of the University Grants Commission.

    Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been admitted to Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences after his health deteriorated, sources said. The 92-year-old former Prime Minister was brought to the emergency department of the hospital, around 8 pm, they said. 

    The reason for his hospitalisation was not immediately known. 

    Manmohan Singh shot to prominence as the country’s finance minister in the government headed by PV Narasimha Rao during 1991-96, having brought in sweeping reforms that transformed the economy. 

    As the two-term Prime Minister of the UPA, he stayed at the top post from 2004 and 2014, and served as a member of the Rajya Sabha till early this year. 

    He retired from Rajya Sabha in April.
