Eli Manning, Antonio Gates among Hall of Fame finalists

Two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning, former Defensive Players of the Year Luke Kuechly and Terrell Suggs, and prolific tight end Antonio Gates are among the finalists for the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class.

The Hall on Saturday announced the names of the 15 modern-era finalists who advanced from a group of 25 to the final stage of voting. The group includes five players in their first year of eligibility, nine who were finalists last year and receiver Steve Smith Sr., who made it this far for the first time in his fourth year of eligibility.

The selection committee will vote next month to pick the class of between three and five modern-era players that will be announced the week of the Super Bowl.

Five others also are under consideration for enshrinement, with Maxie Baughan, Sterling Sharpe and Jim Tyrer finalists in the seniors category, Mike Holmgren in the coaches category and Ralph Hay as a contributor. Between one and three of those nominees will also get inducted into the Hall.

Manning, Kuechly and Suggs are finalists in their first year of eligibility, along with postseason kicking star Adam Vinatieri and former Baltimore guard Marshal Yanda.

Gates was a first-time finalist for the 2024 class and is back at this stage along with defensive end Jared Allen; receivers Torry Holt and Reggie Wayne; offensive linemen Willie Anderson and Jahri Evans; defensive backs Darren Woodson, Eric Allen and Rodney Harrison; and running back Fred Taylor also advancing.

Manning will look to follow his brother Peyton into the Hall following a standout career with the New York Giants. Manning was picked first overall in the 2004 draft and spent his entire career in New York. He led the Giants to an upset win over the undefeated New England Patriots in the Super Bowl following the 2007 season, throwing a game-winning TD pass to Plaxico Burress in the final minute.

He led another late TD drive to upset Tom Brady and the Patriots four years later. Manning is one of 13 QBs to win multiple Super Bowls, with eight of the nine who are eligible for the Hall getting inducted.

Only Jim Plunkett has not been inducted, along with more recent players such as Brady, Ben Roethlisberger and Patrick Mahomes, who aren’t yet eligible.

Manning was a four-time Pro Bowler but never made All-Pro or led the league in a major statistical category in a season. He finished his career with 57,023 yards passing and 366 TDs.

His best moments came during those two postseason runs. Manning joined Brady (five), Mahomes (three), Joe Montana (three), Bart Starr (two) and Terry Bradshaw (two) as the only multiple winners of Super Bowl MVP awards.

Kuechly and Suggs were among the top defensive players of their era, with Kuechly selected as the top defensive player in 2013 and Suggs in 2011.

Kuechly’s career was brief but impactful. The first-round pick by Carolina in 2012 was an All-Pro five times, with seven Pro Bowl nods and a Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

Over his eight-year career, Kuechly led all linebackers in the NFL in tackles (1,090), takeaways (26), interceptions (18) and passes defensed (66).

Suggs was one of the top pass rushers in the league over his 17-year career, with his 139 sacks ranking eighth best since they became an official stat in 1982.

Suggs had seven double-digit sack seasons in his 16 seasons with Baltimore, including 14 in 2011 when he was selected as the top defensive player in the league and led the NFL with seven forced fumbles.

Gates played only basketball in college before turning into one of the NFL’s top tight ends after being drafted by the Chargers. He became an All-Pro in just his second season in 2004. He was an All-Pro again the next two seasons and went on to have a 16-year career with the team.

Gates finished with 955 catches for 11,841 yards and an NFL record for tight ends with 116 touchdown receptions.

Vinatieri was one of the most clutch kickers in NFL history, making the game-winning field goals in the first two Super Bowl titles during New England’s dynasty.

He helped launch the run with one of the game’s greatest kicks – a 45-yarder in the snow to force overtime in the “Tuck Rule” game against the Raiders in the 2001 divisional round. He made the game-winning kick in OT to win that game and then hit a 48-yarder on the final play of a 20-17 win in the Super Bowl against the Rams.

Vinatieri is the NFL’s career leader in points (2,673) and made field goals (599) over a 24-year career with New England and Indianapolis. He also leads all players with 56 field goals and 238 points in the postseason.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced its list of finalists for the Class of 2023, and two familiar names are among the nominees: Eli Manning and Antonio Gates.

Eli Manning, the two-time Super Bowl champion and former quarterback for the New York Giants, is considered one of the greatest players in franchise history. Manning, who retired in 2019 after a 16-year career, ranks seventh all-time in passing yards and touchdowns. He was known for his clutch performances in the playoffs, leading the Giants to two stunning Super Bowl victories over the New England Patriots.

Antonio Gates, the former tight end for the San Diego Chargers (now Los Angeles Chargers), is widely regarded as one of the best at his position in NFL history. Gates, who retired in 2019 after a 16-year career, ranks third all-time among tight ends in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns. He was a mismatch nightmare for opposing defenses, using his size and athleticism to dominate the middle of the field.

Both Manning and Gates have been eligible for the Hall of Fame for the past few years, and their inclusion among this year’s finalists is a testament to their exceptional careers. The final voting will take place in February, and if selected, they will join the ranks of the all-time greats in Canton, Ohio. Stay tuned to see if Manning and Gates will receive the prestigious honor of being enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

‘My Dad Ain’t No Different Than Lamar Ball’- When Cam Newton Drew Parallels Between Archie Manning, King Richard, Deion Sanders, and His Father

Now that the 2024 Heisman ceremony has concluded, with Travis Hunter being named the best college football player of the year, many past Heisman stories are resurfacing. Former NFL MVP Cam Newton shared one such story on the “NFL Players Second Act” podcast in March 2024.

Newton was named the 2010 honoree after he garnered 4,327 yards on offense, 51 touchdowns, and only seven interceptions, leading the Auburn Tigers to their second-ever national title. However, the moment he stood on the Heisman stage was not a happy one for the quarterback.

Cam Newton Recalled the Controversy Surrounding Him During Heisman Win

Newton won the 2010 Heisman Trophy with 729 first-place votes after a 14-0 season and a national championship. However, his win came amid a storm.

Newton had started his college career at Florida, but after an expulsion for three instances of academic dishonesty, he transferred to a junior college and then to Auburn.

In 2010, as Newton was leading Auburn to an undefeated campaign, reports came out that his father, Cecil Newton, and former Mississippi State player Kenny Rodgers, had allegedly tried to get $120,000 to $180,000 from Mississippi State for his son to play there.

Cam had joined Auburn in February that year instead, but the investigation brought complications. The QB was determined ineligible twice in Nov. 2010 but was brought back in time for the SEC Championship, on account that he was unaware of any such thing.

Though Cam was cleared to play by the NCAA, the controversy did not go away. During the ceremony, the Heisman Trust reportedly told Cam that his father shouldn’t come to the event because of the ongoing investigation.

Cam shared on the March podcast (click here to watch) how this decision really affected him: “I haven’t been to a Heisman event since I left, and it’s because they told my dad he couldn’t come to the ceremony. The biggest moment of my life — the most influential person of my life — can’t share the biggest time of my life.”

Cecil stayed back in the hotel room, not wanting to cause any more distractions, according to Cam, who added that he kept looking for his dad in the crowd: “And I just remember like after I won the Heisman, I just kept looking at my mom, and she knew. She was like, ‘Yeah, baby, let’s go to the room.’ I’m that person that my dad is such a strong figure in my life. He sacrificed a lot just so I could play.”

Because of how the situation played out, Cam never felt that the award was as special: “My dad ain’t no different than Lamar Ball. No different than Archie Manning. No different than King Richard. No different than Ja Morant’s father. No different than any hands-on father – Deion Sanders. And it’s like I still have a hard time looking at that award as something I just take pride in.”

Cam further explained that his dad had taken the fall for everything. Cecil said he “fell on the sword” to protect his son, even though he and Cam both denied any money was exchanged.

“There was one individual who tried to navigate the services for Cam,” Cecil Newton told ESPN in 2014. “Were we promised stuff? Were we gifted with stuff of this sort? No. Never.”

“He was the bad guy, selling his son to get money,” Cam Newton said on the podcast. “He didn’t do that. They just had to paint that to have a copout. I remember winning the Heisman, stuttering; I didn’t wanna be there — I wanted to be with my dad. I wanted to be with my family because this was an opportunity to show my dad. To thank him, and also, my dad challenged me every day.”

Nevertheless, a few months after the interview, Newton returned to the Heisman ceremony on Dec. 14 to support Hunter, who used to be a player in his sports program, C1N. Newton also said on his latest podcast that Cecil urged him to attend the ceremony and “get out” of his feelings.

Cam Newton recently made headlines when he drew parallels between some of the most influential fathers in sports history, including Archie Manning, King Richard (father of Venus and Serena Williams), and Deion Sanders, and his own father. In a bold statement, Newton declared, “My dad ain’t no different than Lamar Ball.”

The comparison to Lamar Ball, the outspoken father of NBA stars Lonzo, LiAngelo, and LaMelo Ball, may come as a surprise to some. However, Newton explained that like Ball, his father has always been a strong presence in his life, pushing him to succeed and instilling in him a fierce competitive spirit.

Newton went on to praise his father for his unwavering support and guidance throughout his career, much like the other sports fathers he mentioned. He emphasized the importance of having a strong father figure to look up to and credited his dad for helping shape him into the player and person he is today.

The quarterback’s comments sparked a lively debate among fans and experts, with some questioning the validity of comparing his father to Lamar Ball. However, Newton stood by his statement, insisting that his dad deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as these iconic sports dads.

In the end, whether you agree with the comparison or not, there’s no denying the impact that fathers like Lamar Ball, Archie Manning, King Richard, Deion Sanders, and Cam Newton’s dad have had on their children’s lives and careers. Their guidance, support, and unwavering belief in their children’s abilities have helped shape them into the successful athletes they are today.
