Hundreds march on 101 Freeway in DTLA in protest against deportations

Hundreds of demonstrators marched on the 101 Freeway Sunday morning in downtown Los Angeles in what was called a “protest against deportations.”

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Hundreds of demonstrators marched on the 101 Freeway Sunday in downtown Los Angeles in what was called a “protest against deportations.”

The protesters, many of whom were seen waving Mexican flags, were spotted near the area of Los Angeles and Aliso streets. This comes after President Donald Trump signed multiple executive orders targeted at curbing illegal immigration.

The California Highway Patrol told Eyewitness News both the southbound and northbound lanes are being impacted.

This is a developing story. This article will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.

Hundreds of passionate individuals took to the streets of downtown Los Angeles to protest against deportations, marching on the 101 Freeway to make their voices heard. The crowd, made up of diverse groups and individuals united in their opposition to the current immigration policies, demanded justice and humane treatment for all immigrants.

Chanting slogans and carrying signs, the protestors peacefully occupied the freeway, bringing traffic to a standstill as they called for an end to deportations and family separations. Despite the inconvenience caused to commuters, the protestors remained steadfast in their mission to raise awareness and advocate for change.

The demonstration was a powerful display of solidarity and determination, with participants from all walks of life coming together to stand up for the rights of immigrants. As the sun set on the city skyline, the message was clear: we will not be silent in the face of injustice. The fight for a more just and inclusive society continues, and the voices of those marching on the 101 Freeway will not be silenced.

  • Tommy Robinson supporters start London march while their hero remains in prison as anti-racism protesters prepare for counter-demo

Thousands of Tommy Robinson supporters have begun marching towards Westminster while a counter-demonstration is also taking place, as the Metropolitan Police deploy more officers to keep the opposing groups apart.

Before setting off from outside Waterloo station, the protestors sang ‘Rule, Britannia!’ and chanted ‘We want Starmer out’.

The protest is organised under the name ‘Stop the Isolation’ or ‘Unite the Kingdom’, with many carrying England and UK flags, with one person holding up a T-shirt with ‘Thank you Elon Musk‘ written on it.

Chants of ‘Oh Tommy, Tommy’ and ‘we want Tommy out’ have been heard being sung at the demonstration in support of Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.

While, one protester is carrying a flag with ‘Free Tommy Robinson’ written on it with others are wearing face masks of the political activist.

Robinson was sentenced to 18 months in prison in October after the Solicitor General took legal action against him for breaching a High Court injunction made in 2021.

He admitted 10 breaches of the order, which barred him from repeating libellous allegations against a Syrian refugee.

A ‘Stop the Boats’ flag is being carried by one protester, with another flag reading ‘Britain lost a patriot – RIP Peter Lynch’.

Some protesters were wearing ‘MEGA – Make England Great Again’ hats and others have ‘I am Tommy’ stickers.

Protesters will march to Whitehall via Westminster Bridge and assemble in Parliament Street, at the Parliament Square end of Whitehall.

Meanwhile, a protest organised by Stand Up To Racism has started at St James’s Street, south of Piccadilly Circus.

Protesters will march to Whitehall via Piccadilly Circus and Haymarket before a rally at the Trafalgar Square end of Whitehall.

Signs are being held by protesters up reading ‘Oppose Tommy Robinson’ and ‘Stop the far right’ as speeches are being made to the crowd.

Pedestrian access in the middle of Whitehall will be restricted, and officers will be deployed to keep the groups apart, the Met said.

Anyone in the area not involved in the protests is encouraged to use other routes to go from Trafalgar Square to Parliament Square, or vice versa, the force added.

Posting on X, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said: ‘The Stand Up To Racism protest has set off from St James’s Street, heading to Whitehall via Haymarket.

A post from the force at 12.35pm said ‘there have been no incidents so far’.

Organisers of the protest in support of Robinson posted on X, formerly Twitter, saying: ‘We will proceed to Downing Street. Stand against the isolation of Tommy Robinson.

‘Deliver our message to the establishment.’

Weyman Bennett, Stand Up To Racism co-convenor, said: ‘We saw the power of mobilising against the far-right in response to last summer’s racist riots.

‘We must bring that anti-racist spirit onto the streets of London and reject the politics of hate.’

Commander Louise Puddefoot, in charge of the policing operation, said: ‘We are well prepared for these protests, having been in discussions with both sets of organisers in recent weeks.

‘We have officers deployed in significant numbers to provide reassurance to the wider community, and to give us the capability to intervene swiftly and decisively if incidents of crime or disorder occur.

‘Decisions on our policing style at protests, including the types of uniform worn by officers and the protective equipment available to them, are taken on a case-by-case basis. It allows us to be ready to respond quickly and decisively where we need to.

‘Our assessment for tomorrow’s protest, based on the information available to us, is that an additional level of preparedness is required.

‘What our officers are wearing or the protective kit they are carrying doesn’t change their role at these events.

‘They are there to ensure all involved can exercise their right to protest peacefully, without causing serious disruption to the life of the wider community and without risking the disorder that could take place if groups with opposing views come together.’

Tommy Robinson supporters take to the streets of London in a show of solidarity for their imprisoned hero, while anti-racism protesters gear up for a counter-demonstration.

Despite Tommy Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, being behind bars, his loyal supporters have organized a march through the streets of London to demand his release. Robinson, a far-right political activist and former leader of the English Defence League, was jailed for contempt of court in July.

Meanwhile, anti-racism activists are preparing to hold a counter-demo to oppose Robinson’s message of hate and intolerance. They argue that his rhetoric only serves to fuel division and promote discrimination against minority communities.

The clash between the two groups is expected to draw a large police presence, as tensions run high in the capital. The demonstration comes at a time of heightened political and social unrest, with issues of race and identity dominating public discourse.

As the two sides prepare to face off in the streets of London, the city braces for potential clashes and unrest. The outcome of the dueling protests remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the debate over Tommy Robinson and his divisive ideology shows no signs of slowing down.

  • Terry Rozier’s play in March 2023 game with Charlotte being probed by federal investigators

MIAMI (AP) — Unusual betting patterns surrounding the play of then-Charlotte Hornets guard Terry Rozier in a game nearly two years ago are now under investigation by federal prosecutors, part of the same probe that led to the lifetime ban of Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter, the NBA confirmed Thursday.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the investigation, noting that Rozier — who played for the Hornets on the date in question, and now plays for the Miami Heat — has not been charged with a crime, nor has he been accused of wrongdoing.

The NBA said it looked into the matter at the time and did not find that any league rules were broken.

“In March 2023, the NBA was alerted to unusual betting activity related to Terry Rozier’s performance in a game between Charlotte and New Orleans,” NBA spokesman Mike Bass said in a statement, first released to The Wall Street Journal and subsequently released to The Associated Press and other outlets. “The league conducted an investigation and did not find a violation of NBA rules. We are now aware of an investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York related to this matter and have been cooperating with that investigation.”

The U.S. Attorney’s office did not immediately comment. The Heat referred to the NBA statement when asked for comment.

The game involving Rozier that is in question was played March 23, 2023, a matchup between the Hornets and the New Orleans Pelicans. Rozier played the first 9 minutes, 36 seconds of that game — and not only did not return that night, citing a foot issue, but did not play again that season. Charlotte had eight games remaining and was not in playoff contention, so it did not seem particularly unusual that Rozier was shut down for the season’s final games.

In that March 23 game, Rozier finished with five points, four rebounds and two assists in that opening period — a productive quarter, but well below his usual total output for a full game.

Posts still online from March 23, 2023 show that some bettors were furious with sportsbooks that evening when it became evident that Rozier was not going to return to the Charlotte-New Orleans game after the first quarter, with many turning to social media to say that something “shady” had gone on regarding the prop bets involving his stats for that night.

One frustrated bettor posted an image of a ticket for a three-leg parlay where a $65 wager would have returned $401.95. The bettor played over 6.5 goals in the Tampa Bay-Ottawa NHL game and over 8.5 rebounds for Julius Randle, both of which hit. But the ticket didn’t cash because Rozier finished well below his prop bet of 32.5 combined points, assists and rebounds. The bettor picked Rozier to exceed those numbers.

Some sportsbooks offered Rozier prop bets — his totals for that night were generally set around 21.5 points, six assists and four rebounds — on March 23, then took them down hours before the start of the Charlotte-New Orleans game. It was not clear why that happened, and some bettors wondered aloud why that unusual move had taken place. Rozier was not listed on the team’s injury report going into the game.

The 30-year-old Rozier is in the third year of a four-year, $96.3 million contract.

Porter’s ban came after a similar investigation into his performance and “prop bets” — wagers where bettors can choose whether a player will reach a certain statistical standard or not during a game. Last April, the NBA banned Porter for life after a league probe found he disclosed confidential information to sports bettors and wagered on games, even betting on his team to lose.

The Porter investigation started once the league learned from “licensed sports betting operators and an organization that monitors legal betting markets” about unusual gambling patterns surrounding Porter’s performance in a game on March 20, 2024, against Sacramento. The league determined that Porter gave a bettor information about his own health status prior that game and said that another individual — known to be an NBA bettor — placed an $80,000 bet that Porter would not hit the numbers set for him in parlays through an online sports book. That bet would have won $1.1 million.

The specifics of the bets that triggered the probe into the Hornets-Pelicans game are unknown.

In a shocking turn of events, Terry Rozier’s performance in the March 2023 game with Charlotte is now under investigation by federal authorities. The star player’s play during the game has raised suspicions and prompted a deeper look into his actions on the court.

Speculations have been running wild as to what exactly the federal investigators are probing in Rozier’s performance. Some believe it may be related to potential game-fixing or point-shaving, while others speculate it could be linked to illegal gambling activities.

Rozier, known for his impressive skills on the court, has always been a fan favorite. However, this recent development has cast a shadow over his reputation and raised questions about his integrity as a player.

Fans and analysts alike are eagerly awaiting more information on the investigation and what it could mean for Rozier’s career. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • What’s next for Savannah Bananas ahead of 2025 season, starting in March

Cole calls it “Banana Ball 3.0″ and said the goal is to refine the game “to be entertaining on every pitch.” After several years of experimentation, the Bananas will apply lessons learned to make every moment a “must watch,” Cole said.

“It’s a ‘can’t take my eyes off the show’ approach to get ready to go into the league in 2026,” he said.

The Bananas sold out all 84 games on their schedule last year, playing before more than 1 million fans nationwide.

The Bananas’ schedule is designed for maximum exposure. The multigame series in Major League parks mean the Bananas are expected to play before 60,000 to 100,000 spectators in those markets. Games at football stadiums in Tampa, Florida; Nashville, Tennessee; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Clemson, South Carolina are meant to attract large crowds.

“Our ticket waitlist is over 3 million names long,” Cole said. “We’re confident in what we are seeing in terms of demand.”

The Bananas will also play 30 home games at Savannah’s 5,000-seat Grayson Stadium this year, starting with a three-game series Feb. 21-23.

The Truist Park series in Atlanta is March 29-30 after the team played at Gwinnett’s Coolray Field last year.

Here’s what else you need to know ahead of the Bananas’ new season.

    Who are the Bananas?

Part baseball game, part dance troupe floorshow, part WWE event, the Bananas’ motto is “the greatest show in sports.” The team is often compared to basketball icons the Harlem Globetrotters. Cole draws inspiration from P.T. Barnum, of Barnum and Bailey Circus fame, and baseball marketing genius Bill Veeck, best known for staging the infamous Disco Demolition night in 1979 at Chicago’s Comiskey Park.

The Bananas started in 2016 as a team in the Coastal Plains League, a summer circuit for college players. They played a traditional form of baseball, limiting on-field zaniness, but put a premium on pregame, postgame and between-innings entertainment.

In 2018, Cole first experimented with Banana Ball, staging test games in secret. After playing Banana Ball exhibition games in 2019 and 2020, Cole formed a barnstorming team for the 2021 season.

The so-called “world tour” was such a success that Cole folded the college summer league team after the 2022 season and the Bananas became exclusively a traveling squad. They toured minor league, spring training and college ballparks in 2023 before debuting in Major League stadiums last year, selling out venues such as Boston’s Fenway Park and Houston’s Minute Maid Park.

    Who do they play?

Just as basketball’s Globetrotters have a foil in the Washington Generals, the Bananas have regular opponents in the Party Animals and the Firefighters, two other barnstorming teams created by Cole. Later this year, a fourth team, the Texas Tailgaters, joins the ranks and will be the first team other than the Bananas based in a particular region.

Those four teams — the Bananas, Party Animals, Firefighters and Tailgaters — will compete for the Tour Championship at season’s end.

The rosters of all four teams feature former professional and college baseball players as well as specialists, such as stilt walkers, musicians and dancers. The club’s payroll exceeds $1 million.

The Bananas have star power. Former Major League standouts Jonny Gomes, Jake Peavy, Eric Burns, Jonathan Papelbon and Bill “Spaceman” Lee have been regulars in past years, as has Josh Reddick, a Savannah-area native who played 14 years in the big leagues. Roger Clemens and Roy Oswalt came out of retirement to pitch in a game in Houston last year.

Celebrities make cameos as well. Wrestling legend John Cena had an at-bat in a game last year and Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell played — and danced — in a 2023 appearance.

    What is Banana Ball?

Pace of play is an issue Major League Baseball has addressed with relative success in recent years, with pitch clocks and batter-related restrictions. Banana Ball rules go farther and condense games to less than two hours.

Mound visits, walks, bunting and stepping out of the batter’s box between pitches is prohibited. Foul balls caught by fans in the stands count as outs.

To encourage close finishes, the games are scored with points rather than runs — the team that scores more runs each inning gets a point. Other rules meant to promote drama throughout the games are officiating challenges and the “golden batter,” which allows a team to send any hitter in the lineup to bat in any spot once per game. Major League Baseball floated the idea of adopting a similar “golden batter” rule during the recent winter meetings.

    What makes the Bananas popular?

The Bananas are a car door to car door experience — the entertainment begins from the moment you arrive at the park until the moment you leave. The club puts on a pregame festival, complete with a parade, a marching band, autograph-signing players and two groups of cheerleaders: the “Dad Bod Man-nanas” male squad and the “Nanas” dance team made up of senior-age women.

The creative team behind the Bananas is always innovating, and every pitch is an opportunity for a viral moment. Trick plays, impromptu dance routines, acrobatic fielding and celebrity appearances are the norm between the lines, and the between innings high jinks include crawling baby races and a seventh inning stretch routine set to the tune of Coldplay’s “Yellow.”

Those who go for a beer or the bathroom between innings risk missing a rendition of “Hey Baby,” the 1960s sing-along popularized by Bruce Channel.

    Where can I get tickets?

The Bananas are a tough ticket no matter where they play. Tickets for all games are distributed through a lottery system, which is already closed for 2025. Interested buyers can still join the ticket interest list at thesavannahbananas.com.

Ticket resellers such as StubHub do advertise Bananas games but fraudulent tickets have been an issue in previous years. Fake tickets are not honored by the Bananas.

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York judge set a March 2026 trial date on Monday and moved an initial conference from mid-February to next week as the public feud between Blake Lively and her “It Ends With Us” costar and director Justin Baldoni continued to grow and accelerate.

And in a new and separate front in the series of legal battles surrounding the film that became a surprise hit last summer, Lively in a Texas court filed a request for a deposition of a man she says was central to turning online sentiment against her during its release and promotion.

The New York federal judge, Lewis J. Liman, told both sides in an order late Monday to prepare for a March 9, 2026, trial.

He also moved an initial conference from mid-February to next week and told lawyers to be prepared to address complaints about pretrial publicity and attorney conduct.

Liman took the actions after Lively’s lawyers claimed in a filing on Monday that an attorney for Baldoni was trying to taint potential jurors over lawsuits the actors have filed against each other.

The lawyers said Baldoni’s attorney was trying to wreck Lively’s career and turn potential New York jurors against her by creating a website to release selected documents and communications between Lively and Baldoni.

The lawyers said attorney Bryan Freedman, representing Baldoni, was “engaging in this extrajudicial campaign to influence these proceedings and the public perception of legal filings to this Court, and there already is a serious risk that his misconduct is tainting the jury pool.”

They added: “The endless stream of defamatory and extrajudicial media statements must end.”

Freedman said in a statement in response to Monday’s assertions that the “irony is not lost on anyone that Ms. Lively is so petrified of the truth that she has moved to gag it.”

“We will always respect the court; however, we will never be bullied by those suggesting we cannot defend our clients with pure, unedited facts,” the lawyer said. “All we want is for people to see the actual text messages that directly contradict her allegations, video footage that clearly shows there was no sexual harassment and all the other powerful evidence that directly contradicts any false allegations.”

In a letter to the judge on Thursday, Baldoni attorney Kevin Fritz accused Lively of a publicity campaign that left Baldoni and other defendants the “objects of public scorn and contempt.”

He said the actions had damaged those she sued so that they were “exiled from polite society and suffered damages totaling hundreds of millions of dollars due to Ms. Lively’s scorched-earth media campaign.”

In the separate filing in Hays County, Texas, a precursor to another potential lawsuit, Lively asks for an order for a deposition from Jed Wallace, a crisis management specialist she alleges was behind much of the social media manipulation surrounding the film that turned public sentiment against her through posts on Reddit and TikTok.

Wallace and his Texas-based firm Street Relations were brought on as subcontractors by publicists working with Baldoni and his production company, the filing said.

“He weaponized a digital army around the country, including in New York and Los Angeles, to create, seed, manipulate, and advance disparaging content that appeared to be authentic on social media platforms and internet chat forums,” the filing alleges.

Wallace is identified in Lively’s federal lawsuit, but he is not a defendant.

Freedman, who the filing says is Wallace’s lawyer, did not respond to a request for comment on the issue.

Lively sued Baldoni, his production company and others in New York in late December for sexual harassment and attacks on her reputation and asked for unspecified damages. Baldoni sued earlier this month, accusing Lively and her husband, “Deadpool” actor Ryan Reynolds, of defamation and extortion and seeking at least $400 million in damages.

The judge said Monday that he’ll likely combine the lawsuits for trial.

“It Ends With Us,” an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling 2016 novel that begins as a romance but takes a dark turn into domestic violence, was released in August, exceeding box office expectations with a $50 million debut. But the movie’s release was shrouded by speculation over discord between Lively and Baldoni.

Lively came to fame through the 2005 film “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” and bolstered her stardom on the TV series “Gossip Girl” from 2007 to 2012. She has since starred in films including “The Town” and “The Shallows.”

Baldoni starred in the TV comedy “Jane the Virgin,” directed the 2019 film “Five Feet Apart” and wrote “Man Enough,” a book pushing back against traditional notions of masculinity.

AP Entertainment Writer Andrew Dalton reported from Los Angeles.

Actress Blake Lively and actor Justin Baldoni have been given a March 2026 trial date for the lawsuit filed against them by author Colleen Hoover over their upcoming film adaptation of her book “It Ends With Us.”

Hoover alleges that Lively and Baldoni’s production company did not properly obtain the rights to adapt her book and that they have infringed on her copyright. The lawsuit has been ongoing for several years, with both parties unable to reach a settlement.

Lively and Baldoni have denied the allegations, stating that they followed all necessary legal procedures and obtained the rights to adapt the book. They are both looking forward to the trial in March 2026 to finally put the matter to rest.

Fans of the book are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the trial, hoping for a fair resolution that respects Hoover’s work while also allowing Lively and Baldoni to bring their vision of the story to the screen. Stay tuned for updates on this developing legal battle.

He said, “May I remind leaders of political parties that primaries for the nomination of candidates for the Anambra State governorship election begin in the next two months i.e. 20th March to 10th April 2025.

“Even as we prepare for the Anambra State governorship election, we are always mindful of our responsibilities for other elections and electoral activities.
