  • Mark Messier Wrongfully Calls For Connor Bedard To Be Benched

Connor Bedard is playing very well for a teenager on a lousy team. Very few have ever produced at his pace at his age yet it doesn’t seem to be enough for some commenters, even if the commenter is a pro Hockey Hall of Famer.

During the first intermission of Saturday afternoon’s match between the Chicago Blackhawks and Florida Panthers, Mark Messier ripped on Anders Sorensen for putting Bedard out there on a power play after Sam Reinhart beat him on a goal.

Bedard lost a stick battle with Reinhart which led to him giving the Panthers a 2-1 lead. The thing about Reinhart is that he now has 30 goals on the season. Only Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers and Mark Scheifele of the Winnipeg Jets have more.

Messier talked about it destroying the morale of the team if you don’t earn your ice time as if Bedard doesn’t lead the team in scoring by 11 points. Not putting the leading scorer out on the power play is more likely to destroy the morale of a team.

Lots of people lose battles to Reinhart because he’s an elite goal scorer. Bedard wasn’t the first and he won’t be the last. It’s also not the last mistake he’ll ever make considering he’s a teenager (even veterans make mistakes).

Does Bedard have work to do defensively to round out his game? Absolutely. Most teenage forwards who are good enough to play in the NHL can say that. Do the Blackhawks need to bench their best offensive weapon (by far) on a power play because he lost a stick battle to a guy who had 60 goals last year? That would be a fireable offense.

Mark Messier was a great player who led by example on the ice, created a ton of offense, and won tons of Stanley Cup championships. With that said, he doesn’t have an understanding of how things go in today’s locker rooms.

The dynamics that existed in the 80s and 90s have changed. To say that Bedard hasn’t earned his ice time is an incorrect statement. He’s more than earned it.

You never bench Bedard. You celebrate his greatness while working on his weaknesses. He is going to be an elite player in the NHL for a long time.

In a shocking turn of events, hockey legend Mark Messier has called for young phenom Connor Bedard to be benched. Despite Bedard’s incredible skill and potential, Messier believes that the 17-year-old forward is not living up to expectations and needs to be held accountable for his performance.

Many fans and analysts have expressed outrage over Messier’s comments, arguing that Bedard is still developing as a player and should be given time to grow and improve. Bedard has already shown flashes of brilliance on the ice, leading his team in scoring and earning praise from coaches and teammates.

It remains to be seen how Bedard and his team will respond to Messier’s controversial remarks. Will this criticism motivate Bedard to step up his game, or will it shake his confidence and hinder his progress? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure – this call for Bedard to be benched has sparked a heated debate among hockey fans everywhere.

  • Harrison Ford hopes that he doesn’t “disappoint” fellow Marvel star Mark Ruffalo with his performance as Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World

It’s not easy being green, but turning red might be even tougher, especially for Harrison Ford as President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in Captain America: Brave New World. As the new Hulk on the block, Ford revealed that he had to face the excessive anger issues of his character alone, as Bruce Banner’s Mark Ruffalo couldn’t be reached for pointers. “He wasn’t available for a consultation. I just had to wing it,” Ford joked to On Demand Entertainment. “I hope he’s not disappointed.”

As far as we know, Ruffalo’s gamma-infused Avenger won’t be stomping by in the upcoming chapter of the MCU, which features Ford’s Ross facing off against Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) as the all-new Captain America. It also marks the legendary actor’s first appearance in the franchise after replacing the late William Hurt, who passed away in 2022.

Veteran actor Harrison Ford is set to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as the iconic character Red Hulk in the upcoming film Captain America: Brave New World. However, Ford has expressed some nervousness about stepping into the superhero world, particularly in regards to his fellow Marvel star Mark Ruffalo.

In a recent interview, Ford revealed, “I have so much respect for Mark and his portrayal of the Hulk. He has brought such depth and complexity to the character, and I just hope that I can live up to the standard he has set. I don’t want to disappoint him or the fans.”

Fans have been eagerly anticipating Ford’s portrayal of Red Hulk, and many are excited to see how he will bring the character to life on the big screen. With his impressive track record in Hollywood, there’s no doubt that Ford will deliver a performance that will leave audiences in awe.

Captain America: Brave New World is set to hit theaters next year, and fans can’t wait to see Ford and Ruffalo share the screen as two iconic Marvel characters. Let’s hope that Ford’s fears are unfounded and that he will knock it out of the park as Red Hulk.

  • BRAVE NEW WORLD Star Harrison Ford On Why He Didn’t Turn To Mark Ruffalo For Hulk Advice

It was a big enough surprise when Harrison Ford agreed to return to the Star Wars franchise as Han Solo, so the fact he’s joined the MCU – as a Red Hulk, no less – is still pretty mind-blowing.

Making his debut in Captain America: Brave New World next month, the actor appears excited to board a franchise he’s watched many of his contemporaries have fun in. Beyond that, only time will tell whether Red Hulk is a one-and-done villain or a key part of future stories.

Ford isn’t the first actor to play Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross as the late William Hurt was originally cast as the antagonist in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. He took an extended break from the MCU before returning in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Black Widow

Talking more about following in Hurt’s footsteps, the iconic actor said, “It…becomes your responsibility to fill out the shoes that have walked before you… [I had] a lot of help from the script because the character’s life becomes more complicated and interesting, perhaps.”

He’d go on to describe Captain America: Brave New World as “operatic,” and added, “the level of dramatic involvement is very high.”

Asked if he ever turned to Mark Ruffalo about transforming into the Red Hulk, Ford said the Bruce Banner actor “wasn’t available for a consultation.” Instead, he “just had to wing it” but acknowledged that he hopes Ruffalo “[isn’t] disappointed” before suggesting they should one day square off to see who’s “hulkier.”

We’d imagine Red Hulk will factor into plans for that long-delayed World War Hulk movie. However, assuming he survives the events of Captain America: Brave New World, Ross would surely help turn the tide in the impending Multiversal battle with Doctor Doom when Avengers: Doomsday rolls around.

You can hear more from Ford in the video below.

In Captain America: Brave New World, after meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, played by Harrison Ford in his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, Sam Wilson finds himself in the middle of an international incident. He must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.

The movie stars Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Xosha Roquemore, Carl Lumbly, with Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, and Harrison Ford. The movie is directed by Julius Onah and produced by Kevin Feige and Nate Moore. Louis D’Esposito and Charles Newirth serve as executive producers.

Captain America: Brave New World opens in U.S. theaters on February 14, 2025.

In a recent interview, Harrison Ford opened up about why he didn’t seek advice from Mark Ruffalo when preparing for his role in the upcoming film BRAVE NEW WORLD.

Ford, who plays a gritty, no-nonsense character in the dystopian world of BRAVE NEW WORLD, explained that he wanted to bring his own unique perspective to the role without being influenced by other actors’ performances.

“I have the utmost respect for Mark Ruffalo and his portrayal of the Hulk in the Marvel movies, but I felt it was important for me to approach this character in my own way,” Ford said. “I wanted to bring something fresh and unexpected to the role, and I didn’t want to be swayed by anyone else’s interpretation.”

Ford’s decision to forge his own path in preparing for his role in BRAVE NEW WORLD speaks to his dedication to his craft and his commitment to delivering a standout performance. Fans can look forward to seeing Ford’s take on this complex character when the film hits theaters next year.

  • Brett Favre says viral confrontation with Mark Gastineau about NFL sack record was a ‘setup’

A video went viral back in December that featured Mark Gastineau confronting Brett Favre in 2023 about Michael Strahan sacking the Green Bay Packers legend to break Gastineau’s single-season sack record.

In the final game of the 2001 season, Favre appeared to fall onto the field before being tackled by Strahan, giving the New York Giants legend the record. (It’s since been tied by T.J. Watt.) Gastineau accused Favre of taking a “dive,” and the play remains controversial.

Gastineau met Favre at a memorabilia event last year, saying that Favre had “hurt” him and that he was going to “take my sack back” in a heated exchange.

The confrontation was featured in ESPN’s 30 for 30, “New York Sack Exchange;” not coincidentally, Favre said he believes the meeting had been planned by “ESPN and/or NFL Films.”

“There are athletes from all sports; generally, it’s retired guys. So, you encounter a lot of different guys, but I had no clue, and I really think that was a setup by ESPN and/or NFL Films,” Favre told Mihcele Tafoya on her podcast.

Favre said he had spotted a camera “hiding” above a “divider,” and admitted he had been a bit worried.

“He actually came right to the table – he’s still a big guy. . . .Honestly, I was thinking, the last thing I want to have to do is fight this guy right here,” Favre said.

The Hall of Fame QB added that he felt Gastineau “wasn’t all there” due to his history of concussions.

Favre took to X shortly after the confrontation went viral, in an attempt to “clear the air,” admitting that it “maybe” had “crossed my mind to help Strahan,” but he was not trying to “hurt” Gastineau.

“I booted out of a run thinking it would be wide open, saw Strahan standing there and ducked down. The game was over. There was no need for me to do anything spectacular. It probably wasn’t Michael’s best sack or tackle for loss. In a different game or situation, I would have made a bigger effort to avoid the sack or TFL. But at no point was I thinking about hurting Gastineau,” Favre pleaded.

Favre added that the incident was “not the kind of moment that should be filmed and released.”

Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre has come forward to address the viral video that surfaced earlier this week showing a heated confrontation between him and former New York Jets player Mark Gastineau about the NFL sack record.

In an interview with ESPN, Favre revealed that the confrontation was actually a “setup” orchestrated by a mutual friend in an attempt to generate buzz and create drama surrounding the record. Favre clarified that there was no bad blood between him and Gastineau, and that the two have always had a friendly and respectful relationship.

“I want to set the record straight and let everyone know that what was captured on video was not a real argument,” Favre explained. “It was all in good fun and meant to entertain. Mark and I have always had a great relationship and there is no animosity between us.”

Favre went on to express his admiration for Gastineau’s accomplishments on the football field, stating that he has always respected him as a player and a competitor. He also extended an olive branch to Gastineau, inviting him to join him for a friendly game of golf in the near future.

While the video may have sparked controversy and speculation, it seems that all is well between Favre and Gastineau. As for the NFL sack record, Favre holds the title with 525 career sacks, a record that is unlikely to be broken anytime soon.

  • Brett Favre believes Mark Gastineau exchange ‘a setup’ by ESPN

Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre shared his thoughts on the recent exchange between Mark Gastineau and ESPN, calling it “a setup.” In a recent interview, Gastineau, a former NFL player, got emotional while discussing his battle with health issues and blamed the NFL for not taking care of former players. Favre believes that ESPN intentionally put Gastineau in a difficult position to elicit a strong emotional response for the sake of ratings. Favre expressed his disappointment in the network’s tactics and called for more respectful and thoughtful journalism when covering sensitive topics like player health and safety.

  • Mark and Helly Explore Lumon

    Severance

    Who Is Alive?

    Season 2

What transcends the severance barrier? As we move forward into season two of Severance, this question appears to be emerging as a primary motivator of the narrative. We know that certain physical skills like driving a car (Irv), tying a baller knot (Dylan), or drawing (both Helly and Irv) pass through. Basic knowledge, like the names of the states and concepts related to general culture, is also retained. But what do the Innies retain that Lumon might not want them to retain? Lumon might be able to scrape a person’s memories, but can it scrape their deepest experiences, like love, core childhood bonds, and shame? Given what we see when Mark begins the reintegration process this week, the answer to that question is no. And this might make Lumon nervous.

The overarching theme of this episode lies in the (literally) cold open. Cobel’s car sits on the edge of a desolate roadway, a thin layer of snow covering the barren landscape. There are serious Fargo vibes here. A big truck passes, honking and waking her up. She briefly glances at the breathing tube we saw on her shrine — it’s sitting like a beloved passenger in her front seat — and then pops on the song “Love Spreads” by the Stone Roses before heading on her way toward a town called Salt’s Neck. While this song is a controversial retelling of the Passion of Christ (with Christ as a Black woman, akin to the situation with the Milchick-Kier mash-up paintings we see later in the episode), the title also aptly summarizes the ideas present in this episode: Love, it spreads. And it certainly defies severance. While the idea of love transcending the severance chip is not new, it takes firm root in this episode as a key to unlocking some of the show’s mysteries.

The majority of the characters in this episode not only make moves motivated by love, but they also engage in pointed moments of physical contact. And these organic instances of affectionate touch punctuate the idea that while Lumon can sever a mind, it cannot do the same to our bodies’ physical memories. Severance seems to be making the argument that love can’t be contained by memories; it’s something that we carry in every fiber of our being and that cannot be erased — at least not by Lumon.

As the team gears up to search for Ms. Casey in the Innie world, Dylan insists that he wants to stay and work on his file. He doesn’t tell everyone else the truth, keeping the family visitation suite a secret, but they buy his excuse. The rest of the group heads off on their separate missions, leaving Dylan alone so Miss Huang can come collect him without suspicion.

I have to admit that I initially thought that the family visitation suite was bullshit, an empty promise from Milchick to get Dylan to stay at Lumon. But here it is. And Merritt Wever is there as Gretchen, his wife. Wever is an eminently talented actress, always bringing a quiet and thoughtful strength to her roles, and I squealed with excitement when I saw her waiting for Dylan. At first, I was sure she was a Lumon plant, but later we see her interact with Outie Dylan and their three children in the real world. The juxtaposition between how she treats the Innie and Outie versions of her husband delivers a dose of sad reality.

In the outside world, Gretchen is harried and overstimulated, frustrated that she has to treat her husband like a fourth child. As she hustles out the door, reminding Dylan of everything he needs to do while she works a night shift, we get a brief glimpse of a uniform beneath her winter coat. (It looks like she might be a cop?) Inside Lumon, Gretchen is beguiled by the Innie version of her husband. As she leaves, she gives him a warm hug good-bye and says, “I love you.” She claims it’s a habit, but it feels more like she’s trying to connect with a different part of Dylan, one she believes she lost a long time ago.

As Irv arrives at O&D, he sees the painting entitled “The Courtship of Kier and Imogene,” which is another subtle nod to love, especially love in the workplace. Irv gets a sweet moment with Felicia (Claudia Robinson) as she tenderly squeezes his hand while they talk about Burt. At one point, Irv shows Felicia his sketches of Burt in his notebook. She flips through, spying his drawing of the black hallway. She furrows her brow, asking, “How do you know about the exports hall?” A long time ago, O&D used to do deliveries there but no longer. At Irv’s request, Felicia draws him a map.

Elsewhere in the Lumon maze, Mark and Helly search for the goats. They return to the location where they found the single goat man last quarter and spot a small opening that recalls the hallway on the 7 ½ floor in Being John Malkovich. Mark doesn’t hesitate to crawl through, emerging into a giant room with verdant rolling hills and goats as far as the eye can see. The visual clash of serene pastoral meeting sterile corporate is remarkable. But other than the spectacularly surreal setting and the presence of a fantastically unhinged Gwendoline Christie, the goat experience fell a little flat for me.

The goat sequence brought up more — way, way more — questions about the goats and the Innies that tend to them. Does that space actually expand somehow as the goats get older? Where were these 11 or so other people when Helly and Mark found the OG goat man last quarter? That wasn’t that long ago! But I digress. Helly acts very stilted as she throws herself into asking the intimidating goat herders (who call themselves Mammalian Nurturables) about Ms. Casey, and they do end up answering her question, but there’s not really any new information here. Now, I’m not someone who is looking for concrete answers when it comes to the entire world of Severance, but I’m also not a fan of mystery boxes being opened just to reveal five more mystery boxes. Based on snippets from the trailer, I think we might be revisiting the goat world at some point again this season, and I do hope that we get a bit more in the near future.

In the outside world, we get a perplexing storyline with Milchick that addresses the idea of love from a religious angle. We know that Milchick seems to be fully devoted to the teachings of Kier Eagan. So when Natalie presents him with a gift from the board meant to commemorate his ascendance to manager of the severed floor — a portfolio of the paintings from the Kier cycle but each featuring Milchick as Kier — his reaction is curious. “Oh my,” he whispers in bewilderment as he flips through the artwork. Me, too, because basically, it’s Kier in blackface.

The board signals Natalie to tell him that she received the same gift when she was promoted and found it meaningful. Milchick starts to agree when Natalie tells him that the board has ended the call. Her face does a disconcerting twitch, eventually curving up into an unconvincing smile. This facial tic recalls an iconic scene from Jordan Peele’s Get Out. Coupled with this week’s overt visual reference to the mind passage in Being John Malkovich, the moment left me wondering if Natalie might have a passenger in her brain. Does she even need that earpiece to talk to the board?!

In addition to learning that the board remains terrible at giving gifts, we also find out that Cobel is intimidated by it. Even though she’s clearly traveled far from home in the cold open, she decides to return to Lumon to confront Helena. It’s the ultimate showdown between a nepo baby and a woman who pulled herself up by her bootstraps. Helena offers Cobel the chance to speak to the board, and at first it looks like she’s going to take it. In an uncomfortably tense walk through the parking lot, Cobel follows Helena, only to get spooked and run away before she reaches the front of the building.

The information that Cobel has on reintegration feels important here. Lumon is aware that she wants to talk to the company about it, but it also wants to keep its head in the sand. We don’t know Cobel’s exact motive yet, but we do know that she’s invested in the idea of the reintegration process being effective. Remember: She still has Petey’s severance chip, and she claims that she has evidence that the procedure worked on him … Well, before his brain basically exploded. And seeing as Mark watched his buddy collapse on the pavement in front of a mini-mart, it’s sort of shocking that he agrees to the process so quickly when the opportunity is offered to him.

Having reconciled with Devon, Mark works on creating a light box with the message “Who is alive?” so he can stare at it and retain the afterimage as he travels down the elevator in the mornings. He’s testing out the box when Dr. Reghabi (Karen Aldridge) knocks on his car door. The good doctor points out all the reasons why his current plan is a bad idea, encourages him to reintegrate so he can get information in and out of Lumon, and then tells him that she saw Gemma alive the last time she was in the building. Oddly enough, Mark doesn’t press Reghabi for more specific information about Gemma — if I were Mark, I’d have so many questions! — but instead he immediately agrees to the severance procedure.

It’s been a while since the show has touched on the idea of reintegration — the last (and only) time we saw Reghabi was for a brief scene back in episode seven — so this development feels like it happens lightning fast. One second, we’re in Mark’s car, and the next, we’re in his basement and Reghabi is hooking up him and his bright-red sweater to some machines. Has Mark seen the Severance intro? It’s so nice of him to dress the part!

Reghabi starts asking Mark questions, and the process begins. Emotionally and visually arresting, the sequence begins to show us how the Innie and Outie consciousness can be merged. When the doctor asks Mark about his mother’s eye color, there’s a funny beat where he can’t exactly recall, but then he does. It’s worth remembering that this is the very question that triggered Helly to get incredibly upset in her initial orientation. For some reason, this moment with Mark was the first time I thought about the existence of Helena Eagan’s mother. We’ve never once heard about her, and the likely lack of a mother figure in her life feels crucial.

As for Mark, his waves begin to join when Reghabi asks about his love for his mother. Love spreads, right? Seeing the waves move, the doctor seizes upon the moment, asking Mark other questions that trigger deep-seated feelings of shame and regret that seem to also transcend the severance barrier. Then she asks a question about time: “What year is it?” Innie Mark pops out for a second, stammering, “You mean what quarter?” Reghabi brings it home by asking, “What is your first memory?”

Mark’s consciousness begins to shift violently. His mind is blanketed in confusion, and we’re treated to a glorious montage of Mark waking up on the conference-room table, his Innie and Outie worlds colliding in a frantic jumble. Punctuated by a fabulous needle drop, the scene is a total rush. “Eminence Front” by the Who plays us out as the episode leaves us (and Mark) reeling with possibility.

It’s time for my staggered exit, so I’m going to go grab the elevator. Until next time …

    • It feels worth noting that Reghabi tracks five brain waves — delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma — and that the refiners are sorting numbers into five different boxes. Each box must have a certain ratio of the four tempers inside it. They’re totally programming Franken-severance chips, right?

    • Speaking of Reghabi, “I’m better at it now” is not a very reassuring thing to hear from your brain surgeon.

    • Looking for a refresher on all the reintegration stuff that happened in season one? Here are the key moments to revisit: In season one, Petey starts showing signs of reintegration sickness in the second half of episode two and continues to do so throughout episode three. Reghabi shows up toward the end of episode seven. You could hypothetically also watch all the scenes with Petey’s daughter, June (episodes four and six), but we’re hoping that Mark’s outcome will be something other than death, so let’s not go there just yet.

    • Natalie gets a bunch of screen time this week. In addition to delivering the Kier blackface portfolio to Milchick, she also pays a visit to Ricken to discuss turning “The You You Are” into an Innie best-seller. And now I desperately want to see Ricken giving an inspirational speech to the Innies somehow.

  • Jesse Eisenberg on ‘A Real Pain,’ Acting vs. Writing and Mark Zuckerberg 2.0

    Generate Key Takeaways

Jesse Eisenberg is the guest on the latest episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast. The 41-year-old actor, writer and director is best known for his portrayal of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher’s 2010 masterpiece The Social Network. Fourteen years after receiving an best actor Oscar nomination for that performance, the former child actor is an Oscar nominee again, this time for the original screenplay that he wrote for a 2024 film that he also directed and stars in, A Real Pain.

The semi-autobiographical drama is about two very different cousins — one “successful” but anxious, played by him, the other struggling but charming, played by Kieran Culkin — who travel together to Poland to pay tribute to their beloved late grandmother. It premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where Eisenberg was recognized with the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, and at which its U.S. distribution rights were acquired for $10 million by Searchlight, which released it on Nov. 1, 2024. It has since garnered rave reviews — it’s at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes — and has grossed $16.4 million worldwide.

    More from The Hollywood Reporter

Over the course of a conversation at the Los Angeles offices of The Hollywood Reporter, Eisenberg reflected on how a shy and socially-awkward kid wound up on the stage and the screen in the first place, in films such as 2002’s Roger Dodger, 2005’s The Squid and the Whale and 2009’s Adventureland; what led him to begin writing, even as his acting career took off thanks to the commercial success of 2009’s Zombieland and 2010’s The Social Network, and why he shifted from penning scripts in the mold of Adam Sandler comedies to more personal material; how A Real Pain — the second feature that he wrote and directed, after 2022’s When You Finish Saving the World — essentially brings together ideas he first explored in other pieces that he wrote years ago; plus much more.

Eisenberg, known for his intense and nuanced performances, described the process of getting into character as “a real pain.” He explained that he often immerses himself in the mindset of his characters, which can be emotionally draining. However, he also expressed a deep love for the craft of acting and the opportunity to inhabit different personas on screen.

When asked about his experience as a writer, Eisenberg emphasized the distinct challenges that come with writing compared to acting. He noted that while both require creativity and storytelling skills, writing often involves more solitary work and a different kind of discipline. Despite these differences, Eisenberg revealed that he enjoys both pursuits and finds fulfillment in expressing himself through multiple artistic mediums.

One of Eisenberg’s most famous roles was portraying Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in the original “The Social Network” film. Now, with a sequel in the works, Eisenberg shared his excitement for revisiting the character and exploring how Zuckerberg has evolved over the years. He hinted at a more mature and introspective portrayal of the tech mogul, suggesting that audiences can expect to see a new side of Zuckerberg in the upcoming film.

Overall, Eisenberg’s reflections on acting, writing, and his upcoming projects offer insight into his passion for storytelling and his dedication to his craft. Fans can look forward to seeing him tackle new challenges and bring fresh perspectives to the characters he embodies on screen.

“The hot guy who comes in is always the killer!” Ripa noted, before Quaid, 32, told Consuelos of his role in the next movie, “If you are the killer, you just did a really good job throwing me off, so you’re already nailing it.”

  • Mark Daigneault, first-place Thunder practice being present: ‘Be where our feet are’

Alex Caruso got his start in professional basketball with the Oklahoma City Blue, the Thunder’s G League affiliate, in 2016.

That team — coached by a fresh-faced 31-year-old from Massachusetts named Mark Daigneault — performed the same ritual before every practice. Thirty seconds were loaded onto the scoreboard, and Daigneault asked his players for silence.

“We would call that our ‘be where our feet are’ time,” Caruso said. “If you wanted to pray, pray to yourself. If you wanted to just sit there and breathe, breathe.”

The purpose of the exercise was to practice being present. The Blue didn’t want their players to come to the court worrying about the critical corner 3 they missed in the previous game or whether a call-up to the parent club would come the following day.

What the Oklahoma City organization calls a “0-0 mentality” is drilled into its members at all levels.

“It’s not really a competitive thing. It’s a life thing,” Daigneault said. “You don’t want to be thinking about the past. You don’t want to be thinking about the future. Life is lived in the moment. The game is played in the moment.”

In Daigneault’s five years with the Blue, the team compiled a 143-107 record and made the playoffs four times. In 2020, Oklahoma City promoted him to head coach of the Thunder. That team, charting a new path forward after trading Russell Westbrook and Paul George in the summer of 2019, won a combined 46 games in Daigneault’s first two seasons.

In his third season, the Thunder finished 40-42 and got a taste of postseason play, qualifying for the Western Conference’s Play-In Tournament. Last year, the Thunder made a larger leap, winning 57 regular-season games and finishing atop the West.

This year, Oklahoma City is lapping the competition — even though the average age of its roster as of opening night was 24 years and 148 days. On Sunday, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 35 points in his team’s 118-108 win against the Portland Trail Blazers. At 37-8, the Thunder have the NBA’s best record and are on a 67-win pace.

    Daigneault, however, isn’t looking ahead.

“I think part of my job with the team is to keep the team present for the 82 games,” Daigneault said. “You can’t go back and replay anything in the past. You can’t skip ahead. The game we have right now is tonight’s game. The only way you improve through the season is if you’re present in that process.”

Last week, Gilgeous-Alexander scored a career-high 54 points in Oklahoma City’s 123-114 win over the Utah Jazz. His 35 shot attempts were five more than he had taken in any previous game. The Thunder, who had a three-point lead when he checked in for his fourth-quarter stint, needed his offensive aggression.

Gilgeous-Alexander explained to reporters that he felt he had “taken a leap in my mental” this season.

“In the past, I’ve been hyper-focused on efficiency,” Gilgeous-Alexander told reporters after the game. “In moments, I would not defer, but I would be conscious of it, and I think it would affect my decision making. This year, I think I’ve gotten over the hump of not worrying about efficiency and just playing and being aggressive and seeing where I end up.”

Put it another way: Gilgeous-Alexander is remaining more present.

“I try to be as aggressive and intelligent as I can be in every moment,” he said. “Make the right play, and make the play I’m comfortable making. No matter the moment or situation, I try not to waver from that. It’s been going well for me. It’s something I’ve had to learn.”

Gilgeous-Alexander, defensive stopper Luguentz Dort and reserve forward Kenrich Williams are the only Thunder players who remain on the team’s roster from the 2020-21 season, when Daigneault took over. Caruso took a roundabout path to return to the organization. He spent four seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and three seasons with the Chicago Bulls. In June, the Thunder acquired him via trade, then signed him six months later to a four-year, $81 million contract extension.

In his seven years away from Oklahoma City, Caruso established himself as one of the NBA’s premier perimeter defenders. He earned All-Defensive First Team honors in 2023 and was part of the All-Defensive Second Team in 2024.

Daigneault also collected hardware last spring. He was named the NBA Coach of the Year after guiding his team of 20-somethings to 57 regular-season wins.

“Personality wise, he’s the same guy. Basketball wise, he’s gotten a lot better,” Caruso said of Daigneault. “He’s obviously worked on his craft. That’s why he’s had success. … He doesn’t do much more than basketball.”

In April, the Dallas Mavericks eliminated the Thunder in a hard-fought second-round playoff series. Oklahoma City responded by adding Caruso and Isaiah Hartenstein to its core. Oklahoma City is so deep now that it was able to rattle off 15 wins in a row without Chet Holmgren earlier this season. The former No. 2 pick, who last season blocked more shots than anyone besides Victor Wembanyama, fractured his pelvis 2 1/2 weeks before Thanksgiving.

Oklahoma City is outscoring other teams by 12.3 points per 100 possessions, the highest point differential this millennium. It has the NBA’s No. 1 defense and an MVP candidate — Gilgeous-Alexander — who can score points without having to shift out of first gear.

All of the indicators suggest Oklahoma City is championship-worthy. Just don’t bring up June. The Thunder, instead, are focused on January.

“It sounds elementary, but you literally can’t be anywhere else than you are right now,” Caruso said. “Being present. Playing that game that night. You can’t get the one last night. You can’t get the next one on the schedule. Literally, all you can do is play the one on the schedule.”

Mark Daigneault, the head coach of the first-place Oklahoma City Thunder, emphasized the importance of being present during practice in order to maintain their success. Daigneault’s mantra for the team is “be where our feet are,” encouraging his players to focus on the task at hand and not get distracted by external factors.

In a recent practice session, Daigneault led by example, fully engaging in drills and providing hands-on coaching to his players. He stressed the importance of staying in the moment and giving their best effort in every practice and game.

The Thunder have defied expectations this season and currently sit atop the standings in the Western Conference. Daigneault’s leadership and emphasis on mindfulness and being present have played a significant role in the team’s success.

As the Thunder continue their journey towards a championship, Daigneault’s message of being present serves as a reminder to his players to stay focused and committed to their goals. With his guidance, the Thunder are poised to make a deep playoff run and potentially bring home a title.
