  • ‘Riverdale’ Actor Mark Consuelos Joins the Cast of ‘Scream 7’

Modern role-playing games are nearly whimsical in their depictions of magical powers and playable fantasy races, but the origins of the genre are much darker than most folks realize. More often than not, the books and myths that inspired RPG developers like Gary Gygax veered into terrifying territory (just think of all the times that Conan faced down cosmic horrors), with some of these influences needing to be watered down so that the hobby could eventually be accepted in the mainstream.

These days, even adult-oriented RPG-adjacent productions like Prime Video’s Vox Machina series are still mostly playful in tone, but that’s not to say that no creator has ever dared to explore the darker side of their favorite hobby.

We’ve already covered dark fantasy flicks like Solomon Kane and The Beastmaster on previous editions of Horror Adjacent, but today I’d like to discuss something a little more meta. Back in 2009, a young French-Canadian filmmaker decided to turn his interest in extreme role-playing into the basis for a story about how make-believe conflict can have very real consequences, with the ensuing project becoming the criminally underseen indie thriller The Wild Hunt.

Inspired by the Norse sagas that still thrive amongst the Nordic immigrants of Canada, filmmaker Alexandre Franchifelt came up with the idea for his debut feature when he realized that these ancient narratives were often accidentally re-enacted by dedicated Live-Action Role-Players (hobbyists engaging in a gamified form of collective storytelling where players physically play out characters without the need for abstract tools like dice and character sheets). And with Franchifelt’s home-province of Quebec being home to one of the largest LARP communities in the world, it stands to reason that the director would want to take advantage of the existing Tolkienesque backdrop of elves and Vikings roaming the enchanted backwoods of Canada.

In the finished film, we follow the son of Icelandic immigrants Erik Magnusson (Ricky Mabe) as his jealous nature gets the better of him and he crashes a LARP event in order to win back his role-playing girlfriend Lyn (Kaniehtiio Horn). With the help of his mythology-obsessed older brother Bjorn (Mark Antony Krupa), Erik unwittingly incites chaos among the various factions of the game, with the film slowly devolving into a very real tragedy about the dark side of role-playing and the unpredictable power of narrative itself.

SO WHY IS IT WORTH WATCHING?

I’ve had a lifelong fascination with everything related to role-playing games, which is likely why I spent years seeking out all forms of RPG-adjacent media like Dead Gentlemen Production’s The Gamers franchise and even indie documentaries like Monster Camp. However, while there are a handful of similar productions out there, The Wild Hunt stands out by being one of very few “gamer” movies that still stands on its own even if you have no knowledge (or even interest) in the RPG scene.

Despite the feature’s shoestring budget and questionable production value, there’s an undeniable thoughtfulness to the filmmaking here, with Franchifelt effortless transitioning between the intimate conversations of the real world to the Peter-Jackson-inspired extravagance of seeing dozens of costumed fanatics putting on silly accents and threatening each other with foam swords.

In fact, one of the film’s biggest draws is its believable cast of weekend warriors, with recognizable gaming folk like high-and-mighty rules lawyers and even racial minorities that feel slightly out of place turning the experience into a fascinating character study about the kind of person that engages in such a niche hobby. I also appreciate how characters on all sides present hints of toxic masculinity (which is something of a big issue in the gaming scene), with even our protagonist failing to realize that his quest was ultimately rooted in selfishness.

Of course, the delusional weirdo Bjorn is the real star of the show here despite initially coming off as comic-relief, with Krupa giving a deceptively nuanced double performance as both a fearless vessel of Thor (complete with a crummy theater kid accent) as well as a genuinely vulnerable young man desperate to flee from his painful family life.

None of this would matter if there wasn’t an interesting story putting these characters in motion, and that’s where The Wild Hunt’s mythological roots really shine. The age-old premise of a desperate man venturing into the unknown in order to reclaim his beloved from a villainous captor recalls the most memorable Norse Sagas, though the film’s somber final act is almost certainly indebted to Greek tragedies. Hell, Lyn’s in-game kidnapping and the ensuing “war” even feels like an intentionally ironic retelling of Troy.

To be honest, I feel like The Wild Hunt’s lack of a cult following has a lot more to do with its subpar distribution (it’s actually quite difficult to track down a copy of the film internationally) than the film’s overall quality. Sure, the photography stumbles a bit during night scenes and there are some serious pacing issues before we reach the climactic tonal shift of the third act, but the fact remains that this movie deserves more fans.

AND WHAT MAKES IT HORROR ADJACENT?

You might be surprised to hear that a down-to-earth indie flick about nerdy warriors wearing rubber elf ears contains some unsettling genre elements, but The Wild Hunt is actually a much darker movie than its premise might lead you to believe.

We’ve all met (and possibly made fun of) overly competitive gamers who take their hobbies way too seriously, but when you add in isolation and the social pressures of a communal narrative, you may come to realize that groups like this have a lot in common with cults due to their willingness to spur others into violent action for the sake of a “story.” The Wild Hunt may have a central antagonist in the form of the dark shaman Murtagh (Trevor Hayes), but the real “villain” of the film is the idea that real acts of cruelty can be inspired by mere narratives.

Of course, it’s the film’s third act that really cements it as a tense thriller, with characters forgoing foam swords for fists and torches as the violent spirit that inspired the old sagas claims real world victims. And while I won’t go into detail in order to avoid spoiling the experience for newcomers – suffice to say that there’s some brutal imagery on display towards the final moments of the picture.

The morally ambiguous ensemble, low production value and eventual tonal whiplash are clear signs that The Wild Hunt was never meant to be a crowd-pleaser, but I can’t help but keep coming back to this one whenever I see hardcore fans of any niche hobby engaging in questionable behavior online. Part indie drama, part Lord of the Rings fan-film and all Shakespearean tragedy, I’d recommend this flick to anyone who can appreciate the emotional roller-coaster that is fantasy role-playing.

I also think it would also make for a great double-feature with Joe Lynch’s much more light-hearted Knights of Badassdom!

There’s no understating the importance of a balanced media diet, and since bloody and disgusting entertainment isn’t exclusive to the horror genre, we’ve come up with Horror Adjacent – a recurring column where we recommend non-horror movies that horror fans might enjoy.

  • Why DeepSeek could mark a turning point for Silicon Valley on AI

    New York
    CNN
     —

Silicon Valley is coming to grips this week with the realization that creating an advanced artificial intelligence model may no longer be as specialized a task as was once believed.

The wakeup call came in the form of DeepSeek, a year-old Chinese start-up whose free, open-source AI model, R1, is more or less on par with advanced models from American tech giants — and it was built for a fraction of the cost, apparently with less advanced chips and it demands far less data center power to run.

Until now, the widely accepted wisdom in the US tech world was that American tech giants could stay ahead by spending billions of dollars, amassing advanced chips and building out huge data centers (despite the environmental cost). Essentially, because they’re among the richest companies in the world, they believed they could throw more resources at the problem than anyone else and come out on top.

Now, all of that has been called into question. And tech giants are facing tough questions from Wall Street.

The name of the AI game may no longer be winning with the most expensive, ever-more powerful models.

“The paradigm is shifting,” said Zack Kass, an AI consultant and former OpenAI go-to-market lead.

“It’s so hard to own a scientific breakthrough” such as an AI model advancement, Kass said, and prevent competitors from catching up. Instead, tech companies may now find themselves competing to lower costs and build more helpful applications for consumers and corporate customers — and also to suck up less power and natural resources in the process.

At least one American tech leader has already promised to respond to DeepSeek by speeding up the release of more powerful models.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called DeepSeek’s R1 model “impressive” in an X post Monday, adding that “we will pull up some releases” of new models in response. OpenAI Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil also said the company’s upcoming o3 model, set to launch in the coming weeks, would “be another major step up.”

“It’s a super competitive industry, right? And this is showing that it’s competitive globally, not just within the US,” Weil said on a call with reporters about OpenAI’s new ChatGPT offering for government agencies, in response to a question from CNN. “We’re committed to moving really quickly here. We want to stay ahead.”

But analysts also expect the Big Tech companies to scale back their data center spending plans and potentially rethink how much they’re charging consumers. DeepSeek has proved it’s possible to provide the technology at a lesser cost, although some industry experts have raised eyebrows at the startup’s claims about spending just under $6 million to build its model.

OpenAI’s largest investor, Microsoft, is investigating whether DeepSeek trained its model off of stolen OpenAI data, Bloomberg reported. Even if the company achieved its efficiency revolution with some malfeasance, DeepSeek’s achievements have lit a fire under Silicon Valley’s AI industry.

“All those other frontier model labs — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google — are going to build far more efficient models based on what they’re learning from DeepSeek,” said Gil Luria, head of technology research at investment firm D.A. Davidson. “And you’ll be able to use those at a fraction of the price that you can now, because it’s going to be a fraction of the cost to run those models.”

To be sure, the industry was almost certainly going to eventually shift its focus to “efficiency” — working to add AI capabilities using a set amount of computing power versus adding more servers to juice the technology. There are only so many computers you can build and only so much electricity available to service them. And an AI tool can only get so proficient at, say, writing emails or planning trips, before making it marginally more powerful is no longer worthwhile.

But DeepSeek appears to have sped up that timeline. And in Silicon Valley, unwinding spending on data centers could be tricky.

Just last week, OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank visited the White House to announce the creation of a new company and a $500 million investment in US AI infrastructure; Microsoft CEO Sundar Pichai affirmed he was “good for” his company’s planned $80 billion investment in AI development and infrastructure this year; and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said his company’s AI spending could reach as much as $65 billion this year.

“That crazy AI data center build-out that we’ve been talking about for the last couple of years? They don’t need to do that anymore. They can build a lot less because they can provide a lot more services at a much lower price,” Luria said. He added that investors will likely expect to hear about those plans in the American tech companies’ earnings calls over the next two weeks.

Of course, if the tech giants cut data center costs for training AI models — and therefore charge customers less — their tools will get used more, putting more inference (or people asking questions) strain on the data centers, Bloomberg Intelligence analysts wrote Tuesday. So just how dramatic that pullback on data center spending might be remains to be seen.

Some tech leaders say they’re looking at DeepSeek as validation — rather than a threat.

Proponents of open-source AI — where the model’s underlying architecture is made publicly available, rather than charged for — say the Chinese model is proof that American companies should be sharing their innovations rather than gatekeeping them. That way, the whole US field could advance more quickly and remain the technology standard around the world.

“The United States already has the best closed models in the world. To remain competitive, we must also support the development of a vibrant open-source ecosystem,” former Google CEO Eric Schmidt wrote in a Washington Post op-ed Tuesday.

Meta, which has pushed open-source AI with its Llama model, also said such models are “driving a significant shift in the industry, and that’s going to bring the benefits of AI to everyone faster.”

And even if DeepSeek forces a short-term rethinking of the business model Silicon Valley had envisioned for AI, people who believe the technology will change the world should be glad for the advancement, Kass said.

“We are freaked out fairly, I suppose, because we thought we had global AI supremacy, when, in fact, we should be celebrating,” Kass said. “Because this is one more piece of evidence that the AI revolution is going to democratize technology and it’s going to be fairly distributed.”

DeepSeek, the latest AI technology developed in Silicon Valley, has the potential to mark a turning point for the tech industry. With its advanced capabilities in deep learning and natural language processing, DeepSeek has the power to revolutionize how we interact with technology.

One of the key features of DeepSeek is its ability to understand and respond to human language in a more natural and intuitive way. This opens up a whole new world of possibilities for AI applications, from virtual assistants to customer service bots. By enabling more human-like interactions, DeepSeek has the potential to greatly enhance user experience and make technology more accessible to a wider audience.

Furthermore, DeepSeek’s deep learning capabilities allow it to continuously improve and adapt to new information, making it more efficient and accurate over time. This means that as more data is fed into the system, DeepSeek will only get smarter and more effective at its tasks.

With the potential for such groundbreaking advancements, DeepSeek could be the catalyst for a new era of AI innovation in Silicon Valley. By pushing the boundaries of what is possible with artificial intelligence, DeepSeek could inspire other tech companies to invest in similar technologies and drive the industry forward.

Overall, the emergence of DeepSeek signals a significant milestone for Silicon Valley and the tech industry as a whole. By harnessing the power of AI in new and innovative ways, DeepSeek has the potential to reshape the future of technology and usher in a new era of possibilities.

  • Stars’ Miro Heiskanen leaves game vs. Golden Knights after scary collision with Mark Stone

The Stars have another potentially key injury on their hands after superstar defenseman Miro Heiskanen was involved in an awkward collision with Mark Stone during the third period of Tuesday’s matchup with the Golden Knights.

Stone was skating towards Heiskanen and fell into Heiskanen’s left leg, causing a very scary collision. Heiskanen needed assistance off the ice and was barely able to put any weight on his left leg.

Stone was assessed a two-minute penalty for tripping and the Stars on the ice took issue with the hit on Heiskanen. While it seemed to be shockingly dirty hit at first, which is why Dallas players reacted the way they did, Stone appeared to incidentally trip on Roope Hintz’s stick, which caused him to fall into Heiskanen’s legs.

The Stars did come back from a 3-1 deficit and go on to win the game in overtime thanks to Wyatt Johnston’s hat trick, though Heiskanen left the game and did not return.

Find more Stars coverage from The Dallas Morning News here.

Dallas Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen left Thursday night’s game against the Vegas Golden Knights after a scary collision with forward Mark Stone. The incident occurred in the second period when Stone inadvertently collided with Heiskanen along the boards, causing the young defenseman to fall awkwardly to the ice.

Heiskanen was slow to get up and appeared to be in considerable pain as he was helped off the ice by trainers. The Stars later confirmed that he would not return to the game due to an upper-body injury.

The 21-year-old Finn has been a key player for the Stars this season, averaging over 24 minutes of ice time per game and contributing offensively with 27 points in 43 games. Losing him to injury would be a significant blow to the team as they continue to push for a playoff spot in the competitive Central Division.

We wish Miro Heiskanen a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the ice soon. Stay tuned for updates on his condition as more information becomes available.

  • Defense secretary revokes security detail and clearance for Trump critic Gen. Mark Milley, orders investigation

    CNN
     —

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday revoked the security detail and security clearance for Gen. Mark Milley, according to Pentagon spokesman John Ullyot, an unprecedented move against the former top US general who became a frequent target of President Donald Trump.

Hegseth, in only his second full day on the job, also directed the department’s inspector general to launch an investigation into Milley’s “conduct” to determine whether a review of his rank is necessary. The statement does not specify what conduct Hegseth believes would warrant a review of Milley’s rank.

The Defense Department Chief of Staff, Joe Kasper, said, “Undermining the chain of command is corrosive to our national security, and restoring accountability is a priority for the Defense Department under President Trump’s leadership.”

CNN has reached out to Milley for comment.

Fox News first reported that Milley’s detail had been pulled.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Defense Secretary has revoked security detail and clearance for Gen. Mark Milley, a prominent critic of former President Donald Trump. The decision comes after a series of contentious remarks made by Gen. Milley, who has been vocal about his disagreements with Trump’s foreign policy decisions.

In addition to revoking his security detail and clearance, the Defense Secretary has ordered an investigation into Gen. Milley’s conduct and statements. This move has sparked a debate about the role of military leaders in speaking out against political leaders, with some arguing that it is important for them to voice their opinions, while others believe they should remain apolitical.

Gen. Milley has not yet responded to the decision, but it is clear that this latest development will only further strain the already tense relationship between him and the Trump administration. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
