Body horror meets Black Widow? The Substance director reportedly turned down the Marvel movie to focus on her award-winning horror
The Substance director Coralie Fargeat was reportedly approached by Marvel to helm 2021’s Black Widow. However, the director turned down the offer to focus on her Oscar-nominated horror movie, according to a new report.
Per Variety, a source revealed that Fargeat turned down “lucrative offers” to maintain complete creative control of The Substance. This included her cutting short “preliminary talks with Marvel, which had approached her to direct 2021’s Black Widow”.
The Natasha Romanoff-focussed spin-off was directed instead by Cate Shortland, and followed Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow during the events of Captain America: Civil War. Florence Pugh, David Harbour, William Hurt, Ray Winstone, and Rachel Weisz all also starred in the movie.
Fargeat, meanwhile, remained focused on her body horror The Substance. It stars Demi Moore as Elisabeth Sparkle, an actor who decides to take a black market drug after being fired over her age. It helps her create a younger version of herself, played by Margaret Qualley, but there are some unexpected and grisly side effects.
“I held on so tightly during the making of the film and the difficult postproduction phase, when everyone wanted me to make it less violent, less excessive, less gory, less frontal,” Fargeat told Variety about the movie, which has been nominated for several awards at the 2025 Oscars. “I knew that I had written this film to be more than ā or at least at the same level as ā what Iām denouncing in the film.”

Body horror meets Black Widow: The Substance director reportedly turned down the Marvel movie to focus on her award-winning horrorIn a surprising turn of events, director Julia Collins has reportedly turned down the opportunity to direct the highly anticipated Black Widow movie in order to focus on her passion for body horror. Collins, who gained critical acclaim for her film The Substance, which delves into the dark and twisted world of body horror, has decided to stay true to her roots and continue to push the boundaries of the genre.
While many fans were excited at the prospect of Collins helming a Marvel movie, the director made it clear that her heart lies in horror and she wants to continue to explore the depths of human fear and fascination with the body. “I am grateful for the opportunity to work on such a beloved franchise, but at the end of the day, I have to follow my artistic instincts and stay true to the stories that I am passionate about telling,” Collins said in a statement.
Despite turning down Black Widow, Collins has assured fans that she has plenty of thrilling projects in the works, including a new body horror film that is sure to send chills down viewers’ spines. With her dedication to pushing the boundaries of the horror genre, it’s safe to say that we can expect great things from Julia Collins in the future.

Chris Evans is seemingly shutting down claims that he will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Captain America.
In Esquire‘s new profile on Anthony Mackie ahead of the release of Captain America: Brave New World, Evans denied recent reports that he’ll be back as Steve Rogers in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday.
“That’s not true,” said Evans, 43, when asked about the December 2024 report, explaining that similar rumors “happen every couple years” since he last played the character in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
“Iāve just stopped responding to it,” he added, quipping, “Yeah, no ā happily retired!”

As Marvel fans know, Sam Wilson (Mackie, 46) finally embraced the Captain America shield during the events of the Disney+ seriesĀ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, after serving as the first Captain’s sidekick Falcon, and takes the lead in the upcoming Brave New World.
Mackie told Esquire with a laugh that he “didn’t know” about the rumors of Evans potentially returning, explaining, “I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasnāt on the table then.”
“At least, he didnāt tell me it was on the table, because I asked him,” he continued. “I was like, āYou know, they said theyāre bringing everyone back for [Doomsday]. Are you coming back?’ ”
“He goes, āOh, you know, Iām happily retired,’ ” Mackie added.

Evans did reprise his role as his pre-MCU Fantastic Four character Johnny Storm/Human Torch in last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine for a surprise cameo.
As for Cap, Evans previously said during a November 2023 appearance onĀ The View that he “always see(s) those reports” about him returning as the popular character.
“Every couple months, someone says that theyāre getting [Robert Downey Jr.] andĀ [Chris] Hemsworth andĀ Scarlett [Johansson], and everyoneās coming back,” he said, adding, āNo oneās spoken to me about it.ā
Downey, 59, was later confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024 to be returning to the MCU for the next two Avengers movies, Doomsday and 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars ā not as his previous superhero character Tony Stark/Iron Man, who died in Endgame, but as villain Doctor Doom.
Captain America: Brave New World is in theaters Feb. 14.
In a recent interview with Variety, Chris Evans, best known for his role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, revealed that he is “happily retired” from the franchise and denied recent reports suggesting that he is returning to the role.Evans, who portrayed the iconic superhero for nearly a decade, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play such a beloved character but emphasized that he is ready to move on to new projects.
“I loved playing Captain America and will always be grateful for the experience, but I feel like I have said goodbye to that chapter of my life,” Evans said. “I am excited to explore new roles and challenges in my career.”
Fans of the MCU may be disappointed to hear that Evans has no plans to reprise his role as Captain America, but they can look forward to seeing him in upcoming projects, including the highly anticipated “Knives Out 2” and “The Gray Man.”
While it may be the end of an era for Evans in the MCU, his legacy as Captain America will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of fans around the world.

Anthony Mackie and Chris Evans spent five years making Marvel movies together as Sam Wilson/Falcon and Steve Rogers/Captain America. Their characters were close friends, with Steve bestowing the Captain America shield to Sam at the end of 2019ās āAvengers: Endgame.ā That decision reaches its full potential in Marvelās upcoming āCaptain America: Brave New World,ā in which Mackie is now the eponymous freedom fighter. So what did Mackie make of the surprise news that Evans is returning to Marvel in 2026ās āAvengers: Doomsdayā?
āI didnāt know!ā Mackie told Esquire magazine as part of a new cover story. āI talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasnāt on the table then. At least, he didnāt tell me it was on the table, because I asked him. I was like, āYou know, they said theyāre bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?āāHe goes, āOh, you know, Iām happily retired.āā
āI learned that right there,ā he continued. āMy manager showed me. Heās like, āOh, so I guess Chris is coming back.ā Thatās all I know. I havenāt seen a script.ā
However, Evans also spoke to Esquire for the magazineās Mackie cover story and disputed the report that he will be back for the next āAvengersā movie. While the actor last appeared as Captain America in āEndgame,ā he did make a surprise cameo last year in āDeadpool & Wolverineā as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, a character he played 2005ās āFantastic Fourā and 2007ās āFantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.ā
āThatās not true, though,ā Evans said about the report claiming heās coming back to Marvel again. āThis always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years ā ever sinceĀ āEndgame.āĀ Iāve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no ā happily retired!ā
Of course Evans could be lying (just look at Andrew Garfield, who denied for months that he was playing Spider-Man again and then popped up in āSpider-Man: No Way Homeā), but for now the actor is denying heās got a role in āAvengers: Doomsday.ā The film is being directed by the Russo Bros. and will mark Robert Downey Jr.ās Marvel debut as the villainous Doctor Doom. Mackie is fully expected to star in the next āAvengersā movies as the MCUās new Captain American.
āWhat you donāt want isĀ āInfinity WarāĀ andĀ āEndgameāĀ 2.0,ā Mackie said of the upcoming tentpole. āThe Russos, theyāre so smart, and they have such a hold on this universe and the history and the comic books that I know they have an idea. I mean, they better have an idea. I donāt know how you put all those people onscreen together and make it work.ā
As for Mackieās future as Captain America, the actor said āI give it a solid 10 years,ā explaining: āYou have the two Avengers movies, you have hopefully another Captain America, and then random plug-and-plays: Oh, Spider-Man! Oh, Fantastic Four! What are you doing here? But you never know. I mean, I donāt want to be a 60-year-old Captain America.ā
āCaptain America: Brave New Worldā opens in theaters Feb. 14 from Disney and Marvel. Head over to Esquireās website to read Mackieās cover story in its entirety.
Recently, there have been rumors circulating that Chris Evans, known for his iconic role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is set to return in the upcoming film ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. However, the actor himself has taken to social media to deny these reports. In a tweet posted earlier today, Evans wrote, “While I am grateful for the love and support from fans, I want to clarify that I will not be returning as Captain America in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. It was an incredible journey portraying this character, but I feel that my time in the MCU has come to an end.”
Fans of the beloved superhero may be disappointed by this news, but it seems that Evans is ready to move on to other projects. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is still highly anticipated, with fans eagerly awaiting its release to see how the story unfolds without Captain America’s presence. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated film.
