Auburn, Duke remain 1-2 atop latest AP Top 25; Maryland jumps in for 1st time since 2023
Auburn and Duke remain 1-2 atop The Associated Press Top 25 men’s college basketball poll for the third straight week, while Maryland is back in the rankings for the first time in nearly two years.
Bruce Pearl’s Tigers (20-1) held the No. 1 ranking for the fourth consecutive week in Monday’s poll and the third in a row as the unanimous choice. Auburn has claimed 246 of 248 first-place votes over the past month while remaining unbeaten in a rugged Southeastern Conference with nine ranked teams.
Auburn’s only loss came to Jon Scheyer’s Blue Devils (19-2), who enter the week with the nation’s longest winning streak at 15 games after rolling past rival North Carolina.
The two teams offered the only stability after 15 teams in last week’s AP Top 25 lost last week, with three of those losing twice.
The top tier
Alabama moved up a spot to No. 3, followed by Tennessee jumping four spots to No. 4 in an SEC-heavy top tier. Houston climbed one spot to No. 5 despite an overtime loss to now-No. 13 Texas Tech to end a 33-game home winning streak.
Florida was next at No. 6, followed by Purdue, Iowa State, Michigan State and Texas A&M to round out the top 10.
Rising
Texas Tech (17-4) had the biggest jump among last week’s ranked teams, rising nine spots to 13th after beating TCU at home and then beating the Cougars despite coach Grant McCasland and forward JT Toppin being ejected early.
Two-time reigning national champion UConn climbed six spots to No. 19 after winning at Marquette, while Missouri jumped five spots to No. 15 after beating Mississippi State.
In all, 10 teams moved up from their positions last week. That included Rick Pitino’s St. John’s team rising three spots to No. 12, the highest ranking for the program since finishing the 1999-2000 season at No. 9.
Sliding
Mississippi State had the week’s biggest tumble, falling eight spots to No. 22 after home losses to Alabama and Missouri. Iowa State joined the Bulldogs in a two-loss week, falling five spots after losses to Arizona and Kansas State.
No. 16 Kansas and No. 23 Illinois also fell five spots, pushing the list of sliding teams to 10.
Welcome
No. 18 Maryland, No. 20 Arizona and No. 24 Michigan were the week’s three new additions.
Kevin Willard’s Terrapins (17-5) jumped into the poll at No. 18 after pushing its winning streak to four games, a stretch that includes winning at then-No. 17 Illinois and beating then-No. 17 Wisconsin at home last week.
That gave Maryland its first poll ranking in nearly two years, the last coming with a week at No. 21 in late February 2023.
Arizona (15-6) returned to the poll for the first time since November. The Wildcats opened the year at No. 10 and peaked at ninth, but they’re back in after winning 11 of 12 — including against Iowa State after Caleb Love hit a halfcourt shot to force overtime.
Michigan (16-5) has two previous stints in the poll this season, peaking at No. 14 in early December.
Farewell (for now)
Oregon was one of the three departures from this week’s poll, falling out from No. 16 after being one of the trio to lose twice last week by falling at UCLA and at home to Nebraska. Louisville (No. 21) and Vanderbilt (No. 24) also fell out after losses to unranked foes.
Conference watch
The SEC had at least nine teams in the poll for the seventh straight week, including three weeks with 10 teams to make up 40% of the poll. The SEC has also had at least half of the top 10 eight times in nine weeks, peaking at six teams on Jan. 6. No other league has had more than six ranked teams in any week this season.
Maryland’s arrival pushed the Big Ten to six ranked teams, followed by the Big 12 with five and the Big East with three. The Atlantic Coast and American Athletic conferences each had one.

In the latest AP Top 25 rankings, Auburn and Duke are holding strong at the top two spots. Auburn, coming off a dominant performance, remains undefeated and is showing no signs of slowing down. Duke, led by their star player, continues to prove why they are a force to be reckoned with. One of the biggest surprises in this week’s rankings is Maryland jumping into the top 25 for the first time since 2023. The Terrapins have been making noise this season with some impressive wins, and their hard work has finally paid off with a spot in the rankings. Maryland fans are surely excited to see their team getting the recognition they deserve.

Big Ten men’s basketball power rankings: Maryland makes jump
We’ve cracked the halfway point of the Big Ten Conference men’s basketball season, and if some of the preseason championship favorites want to be involved they’d better wake up.
Preseason No. 1 Purdue remains right there in striking distance of still-unbeaten Michigan State. Winning in East Lansing in a couple of weeks might be crucial, though.
The ship has probably sailed for preseason No. 2 Indiana. Hoosiers need to focus on not completely embarrassing themselves and missing the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis.
Mick Cronin already grumbles about preseason No. 3 UCLA’s travel burden and has not yet been to Champaign or West Lafayette. All of the analytics sites still love preseason No. 4 Illinois. Like the Bruins, though, the Fighting Illini already hold four losses and might need to run the table to hoist the trophy.
How I’m ranking them 1-18 this week:
Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.
1. Michigan State (18-2, 9-0)
Prev: 1
Winning percentage of the eight teams Spartans have played so far: .338. Winning percentage of the 10 still to come: .592.
2. Purdue (16-5, 8-2)
Prev: 2
Trey Kaufman-Renn living up to Matt Painter’s preseason All-Big Ten prediction — and then some.
3. Maryland (17-3, 7-4)
Prev: 6
If not for an overtime loss at Northwestern, Terrapins would be working on a seven-game winning streak.
4. Michigan (15-5, 7-2)
Prev: 3
The team that got molly wopped at Purdue last week did not look like a Big Ten championship contender.
5. Illinois (14-6, 6-4)
Prev: 4
Illini are retiring Kofi Cockburn’s jersey in a couple of weeks. Sorry, just wanted to type Kofi Cockburn again.
6. Wisconsin (16-5, 6-4)
Prev: 5
February and March could set up nicely for the Badgers, but only if they survive sneaky road games like Northwestern on Saturday.
7. UCLA (15-6, 6-4)
Prev: 7
Four-game winning streak pushes Bruins’ record back to 14-2 in Pacific time zone, 1-4 everywhere else.
8. Oregon (16-5, 5-4)
Prev: 8
Opened a stretch of four roadies in five games by losing the “easy” one at Minnesota. Sub-optimal.
9. Ohio State (12-8, 4-5)
Prev: 9
It’s only a two-game winning streak, but could the Buckeyes be gearing up for another late-season run?
10. USC (12-8, 4-5)
Prev: 12
While some teams on this list are still looking for their first Big Ten road win, the Trojans and their treacherous travel have tallied three.
11. Penn State (13-8, 3-7)
Prev: 10
Has not won a game played outside the Keystone State since before Thanksgiving.
12. Northwestern (12-8, 3-6)
Prev: 11
Wildcats likely need big surge down the stretch to extend program-record NCAA Tournament streak to three.
13. Nebraska (12-8, 2-7)
Prev: 13
Starting to wonder if there will be actual corn in the ground before the Cornhuskers win again.
14. Iowa (13-8, 4-6)
Prev: 14
It’s almost as if beating up on East Texas A&M — the purchased win formerly known as Texas A&M Commerce — and USC Upstate does not prepare a team for a Big Ten schedule.
15. Indiana (14-7, 5-5)
Prev: 15
When was the last time a Hoosiers coach needed a win at Purdue this desperately?
16. Rutgers (10-10, 3-6)
Prev: 16
Needed Ace Bailey big time at Northwestern on Wednesday, and he turned in his third 30-plus point performance in the last eight games.
17. Minnesota (11-10, 3-7)
Prev: 17
Oregon visited the Land of 10,000 Lakes only to drown in Dawson Garcia’s 31 points.

Hyattsville man plans to save his prize for the future
About a week ago, a Prince George’s County man’s luck changed for the better. Roberto Fuentes Valdivia had stopped at a 7-Eleven in Mt. Rainier to get coffee when a flashy scratch-off caught his eye. He stared at the MONOPOLY X50 game, which is offered by the Maryland Lottery and licensed by Scientific Games, LLC, and he just had to have it.
Roberto is a fan of Maryland Lottery scratch-offs and Racetrax. So, while he was getting his cup of coffee, the Hyattsville resident purchased five MONOPOLY X50 scratch-offs because they were so eye-catching and the game was new, having just gone on sale on Jan. 13. He played the $10 scratch-offs there in the store.
“Funny, it was the last ticket that was the winner,” said Roberto, smiling. “When I scanned the game, I thought it was $100, but then I saw that comma and realized it was $100,000!”
Roberto, a construction and carpentry worker, chatted a bit with the 7-Eleven staff, who know him well, before heading home to spend the day watching sports. He has shared the wonderful news with family members, who were all happy for him.
Roberto told Lottery officials that he hasn’t put much thought into what he will do with his winnings. For now, he said, he’ll just save the windfall.
The lucky retailer that sold the winning instant ticket is located at 3310 Chillum Road in Prince George’s County. The 7-Eleven will share in the excitement with a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery.
Roberto claimed the first of nine $100,000 top prizes available on the MONOPOLY X50 scratch-off. There are 10 $50,000 second-tier prizes remaining, as well as numerous lower-tier prizes ranging from $10 to $10,000.
The game belongs to a family of six MONOPOLY scratch-offs that went on sale in December and January, as well as a MONOPOLY Second-Chance Promotion. Players can enter any non-winning MONOPOLY scratch-offs into My Lottery Rewards for a chance to win a rolling cash jackpot or cash prize. Six monthly drawings from February to July will award $5,000 prizes and rolling cash jackpots that start at $10,000 and grow until the drawing date.
The MONOPOLY name and logo, the distinctive design of the game board, the four corner squares, the MR. MONOPOLY name and character, as well as each of the distinctive elements of the board and playing pieces are trademarks of Hasbro for its property trading game and game equipment.

What Does Racial Healing Look Like at the University of Maryland?
Freshly into his second term, President Donald Trump immediately kept his campaign promise to defund and eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion programs within the government and the military. Though he didn’t target higher education, the executive orders have already bled into the decision-making of public universities.
I was fortunate enough to complete my undergraduate studies at Howard University, the crown jewel of historically Black colleges and universities. It’s a campus where race or discrimination are a non-issue, and plays no role in a student’s advancement.
RELATED: What We Can Learn From Octavia Butler in Times of Chaos
Still, the president’s wholesale erasure of policies designed to level the playing field for disadvantaged groups, particularly in education, ignores how race plays a factor in everyone’s lives, and is disrespectful to the lived experiences of people of color. Now I’m a graduate student at the University of Maryland, a predominantly white institution.
But because of Trump’s executive order, DEI initiatives on my campus and others could be at risk.
In January 2019, the University of Maryland – Baltimore County was among the first to create a Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) Campus Center, in partnership with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Together with the American Association of Colleges and Universities, the mission of TRHT Campus Centers is to examine and acknowledge past harm and plot a way forward.
RELATED: At Rutgers, Racial Healing Is More Important Than Ever
The school has been a champion of inclusion since its inception in 1966, as it was the first public university in the state of Maryland to be inclusive of all races.
Understanding, after all, is on the other side of uncomfortable conversations.
With Trump back in office, I believe it is important to examine the removal of programs that were originally intended to level the playing field. The end of DEI initiatives likely will have a profound effect on teenagers and young adults of color who are looking for jobs or trying to further their education.
On Jan. 28, Trump announced an immediate pause on federal grant programs to review whether or not they coincide with his agenda to create a nation that is “colorblind” and a society that prioritizes meritocracy. Trump reversed the plan after significant pushback and confusion, but what’s being said and what’s being done is changing daily.
Race plays a factor in everyone’s lives.
However, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump’s executive order on federal funding remains “in full force and effect, and will be rigorously implemented.”
I personally know people who paid for college with Pell Grants. While the president wants to examine government financial aid programs for signs of DEI policies, changing or eliminating them can affect students at predominantly white institutions and historically Black colleges and universities alike.
Before a nation can become united, the people of that nation must understand situations that may not affect them or the people immediately around them. Sometimes, that means stepping out of your comfort zone and educating yourself on something that may make you uncomfortable.
In these next six months as a TRHT Fellow writing for Word In Black, I hope to contribute stories about how important some of these changes are and how they affect everyday people trying to carve out a decent life for themselves in this country.
Mekhi Abbott is one of Word In Black’s four Racial Healing Youth Ambassadors. He reports on and amplifies African American student experiences with her campus Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation groups. Launched by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the TRHT effort promotes inclusive and community-based healing activities and policy designs that seek to change community narratives and broaden the understanding of diverse experiences among people.
Racial healing is a complex and multifaceted process that involves acknowledging and addressing the historical and ongoing impacts of racism on individuals and communities. At the University of Maryland, racial healing looks like creating a campus environment that is inclusive, equitable, and supportive of all students, faculty, and staff regardless of their race or ethnic background. This includes implementing policies and practices that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as providing resources and support for marginalized communities. It also involves actively challenging and dismantling systems of oppression and discrimination that perpetuate racial inequality.
Racial healing at the University of Maryland involves fostering open and honest conversations about race and racism, as well as providing opportunities for education and dialogue on these issues. It also involves creating spaces for healing and reconciliation, where individuals can come together to share their experiences, learn from one another, and work towards building a more just and equitable society.
Ultimately, racial healing at the University of Maryland is about creating a campus community where all individuals feel valued, respected, and empowered to be their authentic selves. It is a ongoing process that requires commitment, dedication, and collaboration from all members of the university community. By working together to address and confront issues of racism and discrimination, we can create a more inclusive and equitable campus environment for everyone.

Maryland’s state spending board on Wednesday approved two construction contracts totaling $41.5 million for projects at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport.
The Maryland Board of Public Works approved a $5.5 million contract that will add two lanes to a security checkpoint for concourses D and E to alleviate passenger volume, as the current checkpoint reaches capacity during peak periods.
The board also approved a $36 million contract to replace the airport’s more than 20-year-old outbound baggage systems for the international terminal. The project will also include the expansion of the Transportation Security Administration baggage screening facility and improvements to existing international baggage claim carousels.
“As travel continues to grow, we are working to ensure the best airport experience for our passengers while creating more opportunities for our airline partners,” said Ricky Smith, executive director and CEO of BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, in a statement. “These projects are consistent with our commitment to providing a safe, efficient, and comfortable airport.”
BWI Marshall Airport accounts for $11.3 billion of economic impact, with the airport and its visitors supporting more than 107,000 jobs throughout Maryland and the region. The airport also provides about 300 nonstop departures each day to approximately 90 domestic and international destinations.

The Maryland spending board has approved contracts for several projects at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI). The projects are aimed at improving the airport’s infrastructure and enhancing the passenger experience. One of the contracts approved is for the construction of a new secure connector between Concourses B and C. This connector will allow passengers to move between the concourses without having to go through security again, making it more convenient for travelers with connecting flights.
Another contract approved is for the design and construction of a new parking garage at the airport. This garage will provide additional parking spaces for travelers, helping to alleviate congestion in the existing parking facilities.
Overall, these projects are part of the airport’s ongoing efforts to modernize and improve its facilities. By investing in these projects, BWI aims to provide a better experience for passengers and maintain its position as a leading airport in the region.

Badgers news: Picks, odds, and prediction vs. Maryland
Fresh off an 83-55 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the No. 17 Wisconsin Badgers are headed back on the road to face off against the Maryland Terrapins on Wednesday evening, with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. at the Xfinity Center.
The Badgers, standing at 16-4, bounced back from a loss to the UCLA Bruins with their win over Nebraska over the weekend, responding with a big blowout victory where they played some of their most consistent basketball of the season.
Meanwhile, the Terrapins have started the year 16-5, and come into Wednesday riding a three-game win streak with victories over Nebraska, Illinois, and Indiana.
What are all of the odds ahead of the game?
Odds(via FanDuel)
Prediction
Maryland is a completely different matchup than the ones Wisconsin has faced thus far this season, and, coincidentally, is a team that matches personnel quite well with the Badgers.
They’ve found a way to create effective two-big lineups with star freshman Derik Queen and senior Julian Reese, who both are paint-dominant forwards with good size. That matches up with Wisconsin’s bigs Steven Crowl and Nolan Winter pretty well, which could mean more minutes for the Badgers’ duo and less small-ball on Wednesday.
Like the Badgers, Maryland is a sneaky good offensive team, as they’ve averaged over 83 points per game, while shooting 48.8 percent from the field and 36.5 percent from deep on the season. Additionally, the Terrapins have six rotational pieces that shoot over 36 percent from three, similar to Wisconsin, which complements their bigs well.
Just because of the nature of a road environment, as well as the fairly equivalent rosters, I’m leaning toward Maryland in this one, but wouldn’t be surprised if it was close and the Badgers even pulled this one out for their 17th victory of the year.
The Terrapins are 12-1 at home thus far this year, with their lone loss coming to Marquette in a close 78-74 game in their fourth contest of the year.
I think that favors Maryland in this one in what could be yet another game decided within five points.
My prediction: Maryland ML
Odds/lines subject to change. T&Cs apply. See fanduel.com/sportsbook for details.
In this week’s Badgers news, Wisconsin will face off against Maryland in a crucial Big Ten matchup. The Badgers are coming off a tough loss to Iowa, but they will look to bounce back and secure a win against the Terrapins. The odds are in Wisconsin’s favor, as they are currently listed as 7.5-point favorites. The Badgers have a strong defense and a solid running game, which could give them the edge in this matchup.
As for a prediction, I believe Wisconsin will come out on top in this game. They have the talent and the motivation to get back on track and secure a much-needed win. Look for the Badgers to control the game on both sides of the ball and come out with a convincing victory.
Stay tuned for more updates on Badgers news and be sure to tune in to watch Wisconsin take on Maryland this weekend. Go Badgers!

#Badgers #news #Picks #odds #prediction #MarylandWhat to Expect: Maryland at Indiana – Inside the Hall
Indiana will look to rebound from its second-half collapse against Northwestern when it hosts Maryland on Sunday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Terps are top 25 in KenPom and beat Illinois 91-70 Thursday night at the State Farm Center.
Sunday’s game will tip at noon ET on CBS:
After Wednesday’s 79-70 loss at Northwestern, Indiana is now 1-3 in its last four games and facing its most challenging stretch of the regular season.
The next seven games for the Hoosiers are against teams ranked in the top 30 of KenPom. Up first is Maryland, which recorded its first road win this season at Illinois on Thursday night. The Terps beat the Illini 91-70 behind 27 points from Julian Reese and 25 from Derik Queen.
MEET THE TERRAPINS
After a disappointing 2023-24 season that ended with a 16-17 record, Kevin Willard retooled the Maryland roster for his third season at the helm.
The Terps are pushing the pace – they play the 64th fastest pace in the country – and force a ton of turnovers with their pressure.
The headlining newcomer is freshman McDonald’s All-American Derik Queen.
The 6-foot-10, 246-pound product of Montverde Academy chose Maryland over Indiana and has been dominant in his first (and likely only) season in College Park. Queen averages a team-high 15.6 points and is second in rebounding at eight per game.
Queen shoots an efficient 61.4 percent on 2s and is an excellent free throw shooter at 76.3 percent. With soft hands and terrific footwork, Queen has a high motor and his mobility makes him one of the most versatile bigs in the country.
Senior Julian Reese joins Queen in the starting frontcourt. The 6-foot-9, 252-pound big man is third on the team in scoring (13.7 ppg) and first in rebounding (9.2 rpg). Reese ranks in the top five in the Big Ten in offensive and defensive rebounding percentage. Reese shoots 57 percent on 2s and 71.9 percent from the line.
Maryland starts a three-guard set with three newcomers – South Florida transfer Selton Miguel, Belmont transfer Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Virginia Tech transfer Rodney Rice.
The 6-foot-1 Gillespie is one of the top guards in the Big Ten. He balances scoring (14.4 ppg) and playmaking (4.5 apg). Gillespie leads the Terps with 38 steals and has connected on a team-high 47 3-pointers. He shoots 42.3 percent for the season on 3s and is 44.6 percent from deep in Big Ten games.
Rice, a Maryland native, sat out last season after struggling as a freshman at Virginia Tech back in the 2022-23 campaign. He’s one of five Terps averaging in double figures at 12.1 points per game and shoots 57 percent on 2s, an excellent percentage. Rice is second on the team with 37 made 3-pointers.
Miguel is a fifth-year senior from Angola who played two seasons at Kansas State and two seasons at South Florida before using his final year of eligibility with the Terps. He’s shooting nearly 40 percent on 3s and averages 11.3 points per game.
The Terps didn’t use their bench much in the win at Illinois, as all five starters played at least 31 minutes.
The primary backup names to know are forward Tafara Gapare and guards Deshawn Harris-Smith and Jay Young.
The 6-foot-9 Garape transferred from Georgia Tech, can stretch the floor and is an efficient finisher. He’s making 61 percent of his 2s and 37.9 percent of his 3s in 13.8 minutes per game.
Harris-Smith started last season for the Terps but is now a reserve who has slightly improved his game. The 6-foot-5 guard is finishing better than a season ago – 55 percent on 2s versus 46.7 percent as a freshman.
Young played his freshman season at UCF, his sophomore season at Memphis and is now a backup for the Terps in year three of his career. He’s shooting 42.9 percent on 3s in 13.3 minutes per game.
TEMPO-FREE PREVIEW
All national rankings in the graphic below are updated through Thursday’s games.
Maryland is an elite defensive team, ranking in the top 20 nationally in KenPom’s adjusted defensive efficiency. Terrapin opponents turn the ball over on 21.9 percent of possessions, which ranks in the top 25 in the country. On average, Maryland forces 15.5 turnovers per game. That number stands out after Indiana turned it over 17 times in its loss at Welsh-Ryan Arena earlier in the week.
Maryland is also an excellent defensive-rebounding team. Its opponents grab just 25.9 percent of their missed shots, which ranks in the top 35 nationally. The Terps also defend well without fouling, as their opponents have mustered a free-throw rate (FTA/FGA) of 26.5 percent.
Offensively, Maryland is shooting 35.8 percent on 3s, 56 percent on 2s and 74.7 percent from the free throw line. Last season, those same numbers were 28.9/48.8/72, illustrating Willard’s roster upgrades in the offseason via high school recruiting and the portal.
Maryland also does an excellent job handling the ball. The Terps turn it over on 14.8 percent of their possessions, which ranks them in the top 30 nationally.
WHAT IT COMES DOWN TO
The KenPom projection is Maryland by four with a 36 percent chance of an IU victory. Bart Torvik likes the Terps by five with a 32 percent chance of a Hoosier win.
Maryland comes into Bloomington confident after dominating Illinois on its home court. The frontcourt duo of Queen and Reese is one of the best in the nation and the backcourt is much improved in year three of the Willard era.
Indiana’s last home game was ugly, as the Fighting Illini blew out the Hoosiers. Still, the Hoosiers have just one home loss and can remain in the NCAA tournament picture by winning home games. However, that task will become tough, as the next four games in Assembly Hall are against teams projected to make the 2025 NCAA tournament field.
With just 11 regular season games remaining, Indiana needs to start stacking wins to salvage a season that began with significant expectations that have not been met so far.

Maryland men’s basketball put together a signature road victory against No. 17 Illinois Thursday. Now it’s got to build off that momentum and keep winning.
The Terps’ road trip continues in Bloomington, Indiana, against Indiana Sunday, as they look to create their first three-game Big Ten win streak of the season. The Hoosiers come into the game looking to avoid falling into a skid.
Tip-off is scheduled for noon ET and the game will air on CBS.
Indiana Hoosiers (14-6, 5-4 Big Ten)
2023-24 record: 19-14, 10-10 Big Ten
Indiana enters Sunday’s contest off a disheartening loss to Northwestern, but less than 10 days removed from an overtime road victory over Ohio State.
It’s been an up-and-down campaign thus far for the Hoosiers. They’ve got a winning record both overall and in conference play, but five of its six losses have come by at least 15 points. But head coach Mike Woodson’s squad will return home for the first time in 12 days looking to establish some consistency.
This isn’t an Indiana team the caliber of Woodson’s early tenure, with Trayce Jackson-Davis leading the way. But it’s still one capable of making plenty of noise.
Players to know
Oumar Ballo, redshirt senior center, 7-foot-0, No. 11 — Ballo transferred to Bloomington after three seasons at Arizona and has continued to be one of the most efficient scorers in the country. His 65.8% field goal percentage is the highest in the Big Ten among players with at least four shots per game. Ballo also paces the conference in rebounds per game (10.2), while leading the Hoosiers in blocks per game (1.7).
Malik Reneau, junior forward, 6-foot-9, No. 5 — Derik Queen’s former Montverde Academy teammate missed five games with an injury before returning for 11 minutes against Northwestern. It’s yet to be seen if he’s fully healthy — but if he is, Reneau is a key contributor for Indiana. He’s second on the team with 13.3 points per game.
Trey Galloway, senior guard, 6-foot-4, No. 32 — Galloway is the primary facilitator in Indiana’s offense out of the backcourt. He averages just 7.2 points per game but leads the team with 4.1 assists per contest. Galloway has come off the bench in each of Indiana’s last two games, yet he’s been a big part of both games regardless, with at least 25 minutes in each.
Strength
Frontcourt offense. Indiana’s starting frontcourt of Ballo, Reneau and 6-foot-9 sophomore Mackenzie Mgbako is also its top three scorers. The Hoosiers can create action down low on any given night and in a variety of ways.
Weakness
Defense. The Hoosiers allow 72.8 points per game, the third most in the Big Ten. They don’t create much action on that end of the court, either, sitting in the conference’s bottom five in steals per game (5.9). Indiana has allowed 85 or more points in all but one of its six losses.
Three things to watch
1. How deep does Kevin Willard go into his bench? Even in a game that ended up a blowout, just four members of Maryland’s bench saw a combined 30 minutes against Illinois. With starters potentially feeling that fatigue, against a weaker opponent in Illinois, it’s worth noting if Willard will give his bench a bit more run.
2. How does Derik Queen look? Queen bounced back against Illinois, totaling 25 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals just one game after posting a season-low three points against Nebraska. Whether he builds off the momentum he created against the Fighting Illini or continues to struggle could be the difference between a win and a loss.
3. Important conference standings matchup. Both the Terps and Hoosiers currently sit at 5-4 in conference play, tied for seventh in the Big Ten. The winner of Sunday’s contest gets a critical boost further into the top half of conference standings.
Maryland Men’s Basketball Faces Tough Test at IndianaThe Maryland men’s basketball team is gearing up for a tough road game as they prepare to face off against the Indiana Hoosiers. The Terrapins are coming off a strong start to the season, with a record of 6-1 and wins over top-ranked opponents like Illinois and Wisconsin.
However, Indiana presents a formidable challenge for Maryland, as they boast a talented roster and a strong home court advantage. The Hoosiers are currently 5-2 on the season and are looking to make a statement in the Big Ten conference.
Key players to watch in this matchup include Maryland’s standout guard Eric Ayala, who leads the team in scoring with an average of 16.6 points per game, and Indiana’s dynamic forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, who is averaging a double-double with 19.3 points and 9.9 rebounds per game.
Maryland will need to bring their A-game on both ends of the court to come out on top in this matchup. They will need to contain Jackson-Davis and limit Indiana’s scoring opportunities, while also executing on offense and taking advantage of their own scoring opportunities.
This game is sure to be an exciting and competitive matchup between two talented teams in the Big Ten conference. Maryland fans will be eagerly watching to see if their team can come out with a crucial road win against Indiana. Tune in to see all the action unfold.

Maryland at Illinois picks and predictions
Prediction
Illinois 81, Maryland 78
Moneyline
Maryland is 6-4 over the last 10, and those 4 losses all came on the road at Big Ten schools. That trend should continue, but Illinois (-400) is far too expensive to consider.
Let’s take a small risk with a big reward and go with JA’KOBE GILLISPIE OVER 2.5 THREES (+145). He has hit 3+ threes in 3 of 5, going 16-for-35 (45.7%) during that stretch. He’s clearly feeling it, and he’ll be the one to keep Maryland in it.

Against the spread
Illinois has played just twice in the last 9 days, and its best player barely played in the last one and missed some time previously due to injury. I didn’t really like its side of this before discovering that. Maryland is tied for 22nd at 83.2 points per game, and while all 4 of its losses in the last 10 came at Big Ten schools, it lost those games by 2, 4, 6 and 5 points.
Take MARYLAND +8.5 (-105).
Over/Under
The Terps are 6-4 O/U in their last 10, and their last game hit the Under, which snapped a 4-game Over streak. Illinois is 7-3 O/U in its last 10, and this matchup has resulted in a 6-3-1 O/U record in the last 10.
Take the OVER 157.5 (-115).

Maryland at Illinois Odds, Picks and PredictionsIn a Big Ten showdown, the Maryland Terrapins will travel to face the Illinois Fighting Illini on Friday night. Both teams are looking to bounce back from losses in their previous games and will be hungry for a win.
The odds for this matchup favor Illinois, who are currently listed as 6.5-point favorites. The over/under for total points scored is set at 140.5.
When it comes to picks and predictions, the Illinois Fighting Illini have the advantage in this game. They have a strong offense led by Ayo Dosunmu, who is averaging 21.1 points per game. Maryland, on the other hand, has struggled defensively and will have a tough time containing Illinois’ scoring threats.
Our prediction is that Illinois will cover the spread and come out on top in this game. Look for Dosunmu to have a big game and lead the Fighting Illini to a comfortable victory. The over on total points scored is also a good bet, as both teams have the ability to put up points.
Final score prediction: Illinois 77, Maryland 65.
