  • Maryland Weather: Winter Storm Warning for Northern Suburbs

BALTIMORE — Brief warmup Saturday in advance of a coastal storm developing Sunday. This storm is expected to produce another round of accumulating snow across the metro area and heavy accumulations for northern suburbs.

At this time, the best chance for significant snowfall appears to be along and northwest of I-95, where totals could range from three to six inches. The eastern shore may see an inch or less.

WJZ has issued a First Alert Weather Day for Sunday due to the snow. Travel problems are anticipated as snow begins to accumulate, especially once temperatures fall below freezing. If you plan to head out to watch the Ravens game on Sunday evening, plan accordingly and allow extra time to reach your destination.

Bitter Cold Martin Luther King, Junior Day

At the same time this coastal low pulls moisture from the south, an artic blast will push in from the north. As the coastal storm moves north into New England, we will see bitterly cold temperatures in time for Martin Luther King, Junior Day. Temperatures will begin to fall across the area Sunday afternoon, winds out of the northwest will begin to funnel cold air into the region. Monday morning, temperatures will be in the teens with wind chills in the single digits.

WJZ First Alert Weather Days are also in effect for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday due to the extreme cold.

The coldest nights will be Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with actual temperatures dipping into the single digits. Wind chills on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings will fall below zero in most areas, with some locations experiencing wind chills as low as the teens below zero. High temperatures on Tuesday afternoon will only reach near 20 degrees.

    Weekend Slight Warmup

By the end of the week, temperatures will start to warm up slightly. Highs will climb to the upper 20s on Thursday and the mid-30s on Friday. Overnight lows will gradually rise as well, with Friday morning’s temperatures in the mid-teens and next Saturday morning’s around 20 degrees.

We will also need to monitor midweek closely as a major winter storm develops along the Gulf Coast. As the storm tracks northeast toward the Southeast Atlantic Coast, parts of Southern Maryland and the lower Eastern Shore may see snow on the northern fringes of the system. The most likely time frame for this event is late Tuesday into early Wednesday. Light snow accumulation is possible, but the extent will depend on the storm’s exact track.

Attention residents of the northern suburbs of Maryland! A winter storm warning has been issued for our area. Please be prepared for heavy snowfall, strong winds, and potentially hazardous driving conditions.

Make sure to stock up on essential supplies, such as food, water, and medications, in case you are unable to leave your home for an extended period of time. It is also a good idea to have emergency kits in your car in case you get stranded on the road.

Stay updated on the weather forecast and heed any warnings or advisories from local authorities. Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm and stay indoors to stay safe.

Let’s all make sure to take necessary precautions and stay safe during this winter storm warning. Stay warm and stay informed. #MarylandWeather #WinterStormWarning #StaySafe

    Tony updates snow forecast numbers

FORECAST WITH METEOROLOGIST TONY PANN. WELL, EVEN WITH SOME CLOUDS AND A FEW RAIN SHOWERS TODAY, TEMPERATURES MADE IT INTO THE 40S. SO SIGNIFICANT WARM UP OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS. AND LIKE WE SAID AT THE TOP OF THE SHOW, THE TEMPERATURES ARE GOING TO STAY ABOVE FREEZING TONIGHT. YOU DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT ANY SNOW OR ICE IF YOU’RE HEADING OUT ON THIS SATURDAY NIGHT. IT’S 38 AT BWI MARSHALL RIGHT NOW WITH THE RELATIVE HUMIDITY, 76%. THE TEMPERATURES ARE GOING TO BASICALLY HOLD STEADY OVERNIGHT TONIGHT. MAYBE JUST DROP OFF A FEW MORE DEGREES. 39 IN COLUMBIA, 35 IN BEL AIR. IT’S TOMORROW WHEN THE TEMPERATURES ARE GOING TO DROP INTO THE 20S AND THE STORM COMES IN, THAT WE’RE GOING TO HAVE SOME PROBLEMS. NO PRECIPITATION AROUND US RIGHT NOW, BUT WE’RE WAITING FOR A STORM TO DEVELOP OFF TO THE SOUTH. IT’S NOT REALLY THERE YET. IT SHOULD GET ITS ACT TOGETHER OVER THE NEXT 12 HOURS AND COME INTO MARYLAND DURING THE DAY TOMORROW. SO LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THIS ON OUR FUTURECAST. THIS IS 530 IN THE MORNING. YOU MIGHT EVEN SEE A COUPLE OF SPRINKLES TOMORROW MORNING EARLY IF YOU’RE UP. BUT THE TEMPERATURES ARE GOING TO FALL QUICKLY. BY 9 OR 10:00 IT WILL DROP INTO THE UPPER 20S AND LOW 30S, AND IT LOOKS LIKE THE SNOW IS GOING TO BEGIN LATE IN THE MORNING OR EARLY AFTERNOON. BY THE TIME WE GET TO LUNCHTIME, IT SHOULD BE SNOWING PRETTY GOOD. JUST ABOUT EVERYWHERE HERE IN THE I-95 CORRIDOR. SO IF YOU’RE GOING TO RAVENS GAME PARTIES, YOU’RE GOING TO DRIVE THROUGH SOME SNOW, I THINK, AND THE ROADS ARE GOING TO BE SLICK BECAUSE THE TEMPERATURES WILL BE BELOW FREEZING BY THAT TIME. THIS IS 4:00 IN THE AFTERNOON. YOU CAN SEE BY THEN THIS COMPUTER MODEL HAS THE TEMPERATURES ALL THE WAY INTO THE MID 20S. AND SOME OF THE NORTHERN SUBURBS, AND THAT SHOULD FLUFF UP THE SNOW A LITTLE BIT. SO THAT’S WHERE THE HIGHEST SNOW ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE. SHOW YOU THAT MAP IN A SECOND AGAIN. BUT I THINK MOST OF THE SNOW WILL BE GONE BY 6 OR 7:00 IN THE EVENING. TOMORROW WE’LL START TO PULL AWAY. SO IT’LL BE SNOWING FOR MOST OF THE DAY TOMORROW. BUT BY AROUND THIS TIME TOMORROW NIGHT, THE SNOW SHOULD BE TAPERING OFF. SO HOW MUCH SNOW? THAT’S THE NEXT QUESTION. IT LOOKS LIKE 2 TO 4IN IN THE I-95 CORRIDOR. AND THAT INCLUDES BALTIMORE CITY AND THE EASTERN SHORE COUNTIES. AND THIS DARKER SHADE OF BLUE, THE TYPICALLY COLDER SPOTS, 3 TO 5IN FOR FREDERICK WESTMINSTER PARKTON MAYBE EVEN HUNT VALLEY AND COCKEYSVILLE AND INTO THE NORTHERN PART OF HARFORD COUNTY AS WELL. THAT’S THE WAY WE SEE IT RIGHT NOW. OBVIOUSLY, THINGS COULD CHANGE OVERNIGHT TONIGHT, SO JOIN US AGAIN AT TEN AND 11:00 TONIGHT. I’LL GIVE YOU ANOTHER UPDATE. THE FORECAST IN DETAIL, PARTLY TO MOSTLY CLOUDY TONIGHT. TEMPERATURES BASICALLY HOLDING STEADY IN THE 30S DURING THE DAY TOMORROW. SNOW IS LIKELY. THE TEMPERATURES WILL BE FALLING INTO THE 20S. BREEZY COLD WILL EVENTUALLY DROP INTO THE UPPER 20S AND LOW 30S. SUNRISE IS AT 722, AND THEN IT’S GOING TO GET REALLY COLD. NOT MUCH SNOW OR ICE OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT MONDAY AND TUESDAY, BUT COLD. THE HIGH TEMPERATURES, UPPER TEENS AND LOW 20S. LOOK AT THE LOW TEMPERATURE ON TUESDAY MORNING SEVEN. THAT’S NOT THE WIND CHILL. THAT’S THE ACTUAL TEMPERATURE. THERE COULD BE SOME LIGHT SNOW COMING BACK LATE TUESDAY NIGHT. WEDNESDAY MORNING. WE’LL KEEP AN EYE ON THAT. BUT A HIGH OF ONLY 19 EXPECTED ON WEDNESDAY. A SLOW WARM UP GOING INTO NEXT WEEKEND. SMAL

As winter continues to grip Maryland, residents are bracing for another round of snowfall in the forecast. The latest update from meteorologists shows that the state can expect anywhere from 3-6 inches of snow accumulation in the coming days.

With temperatures dropping and precipitation on the horizon, it’s important for Marylanders to be prepared for potentially hazardous road conditions and power outages. • Some Maryland schools cancel evening activities in anticipation of winter weather

Evening snow showers possible in Baltimore area

Evening snow showers possible in Baltimore area

    04:54

BALTIMORE — Some Maryland school districts canceled after-school activities for Thursday as parts of the state anticipate overnight snowfall and continued freezing temperatures.

The following schools have canceled all after-school and evening activities on Thursday, Jan. 16:

    • Baltimore County Public Schools
    • Cecil County Public Schools
    • Harford County Public Schools

    Snow showers expected

Scattered snow showers are expected across the Baltimore area Thursday evening, according to The First Alert Weather Team.

Steady snow could result in a light coating on roadways during the evening commute. By Thursday night, temperatures are expected to dip into the mid-20s.

Temperatures are expected to reach the low 40s Friday before another blast of Arctic air returns Sunday.

    Cold weather persists

The Baltimore region has experienced frigid temperatures on and off over the past few days. Baltimore City was under a Code Blue Cold Alert that started Tuesday, Jan. 14 and continued through Thursday morning.

Maryland has reported 12 cold-related deaths so far this winter, according to health officials. Three of the deaths occurred in Baltimore City and two were in Baltimore County.

The region experienced its first major snowstorm of the season on January 6. The storm dumped about 3 to 12 inches of snow across Maryland. BWI Airport measured 6.6 inches of snow, the largest amount since January 2022 when 6.8 inches was reported.

As winter weather approaches, several schools in Maryland have made the decision to cancel evening activities in order to ensure the safety of students and staff.

With the possibility of snow and ice in the forecast, school administrators are taking precautions to prevent any potential accidents or hazards. Some of the activities that have been cancelled include sports practices, club meetings, and performances.

Parents and students are encouraged to stay updated on any further changes or cancellations as the weather situation develops. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to winter weather, and the schools are taking the necessary steps to prioritize safety.

Stay warm and stay safe, Maryland!

  • Thursday Night Hoops As Maryland Heads To Northwestern

    Maryland (13-4, 3-3 B1G) at Northwestern (10-6, 1-4 B1G)

    January 16, 2025

    9 p.m. ET (8 p.m. CT)

    Welsh-Ryan Arena

COLLEGE PARK, MD — After winning back-to-back home games, Maryland heads back to the road to face Northwestern on Thursday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena on BTN (9 PM ET). Fans can listen to the game on the Maryland Sports Radio Network with Voice of the Terps Johnny Holliday calling the action alongside Chris Knoche.

Maryland gutted out a 77-71 win over Minnesota to even their Big Ten record to 3-3 on Monday night. Derik Queen scored a career-high 27 points, with 18 coming in the second half, while Rodney Rice added 21 points for his second 20-point game of the season.

The Terps are ranked No. 23 in the NCAA NET, No. 24 in the Kenpom ratings, No. 18 in the Torvik ranking, No. 23 on EvanMiya.com, and No. 21 on the ESPN Basketball Power Index.

Maryland has been explosive offensively averaging 84.6 points this year which ranks as the eighth-best average in program history and ranks No. 17 nationally this season. Defensively, the Terps are giving up just 63.8 points per game which is 20th nationally.

Big Notes: Finding The Road Dub

    • Maryland is looking for it’s first true road win of the season, however, two of it’s three road losses have come at Top-10 opponents (Purdue, Oregon). On neutral courts, Maryland is 2-0 with wins over Villanova and Syracuse.
    • Last year, Maryland was 4-8 in road games.
    • The last time Maryland won at Northwestern was on Jan. 12, 2022 – a double-overtime 94-87 victory for the Terps. Eric Ayala posted a career-high 26 points and a career-high 11 rebounds, while Fatts Russell scored 21 of his season-high 23 points in the second half and two overtime periods.
    Team Pic

Maryland is averaging 84.6 points per game which is the eighth-best mark in program history.

    Ja’Kobi Showing The Range

    • Since joining the Terps, Ja’Kobi Gillespie has scored in double figures in 13 of his 17 games played.
    • Against No. 22 UCLA, Gillespie set a season-high with 27 points going 4-of-8 from deep and 9-of-9 from the charity stripe. He also had four assists and a season-high four steals in the win.
    • Against No. 15 Marquette, Gillespie had 24 points going 10-of-17 from the floor and 4-of-9 from three-point range. That total was just two shy of matching his career-high of 26 points scored against Southern Illinois (2/14/24) when he was at Belmont.
    • Gillespie also leads the team with 73 total assists (4.3 per game) giving him 285 for his career. He set a new career-high with 11 in the win over Syracuse as part of his first career double-double (17 pts). The 11 assists were the most by a Maryland player in a game since Melo Trimble had 12 against North Carolina (12/2/15).
    • His 4.3 assists per game are tied for 8th in the B1G.
    • Gillespie now has 973 career points between Belmont and Maryland through 74 total career games played.
    • A highly-touted football prospect while in high school, Gillespie received offers from ACC and SEC programs on the gridiron. As a wide receiver, defensive back, and special teams returner, he pulled off a touchdown trifecta with a receiving touchdown, a pick-six, and a punt return in a single-game.
    Ja'Kobi Gillespie

    Juju Beast

    • Julian Reese entered the 2024-25 campaign as one of the top post players in the Big Ten and nationally. Last season, he earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors as a junior after being named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team and to the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award Watch List.
    • Reese posted 15 double doubles last season which were the ninth most nationally and stood second in the Big Ten during the regular season.
    • All-time, Reese has the eighth-most double-doubles for any Terp (29).
    • Reese is one of nine players in program history to post over 1,100 career points and 800 career rebounds.
    • Despite having a talented group of high-scoring guards and the addition of Derik Queen to the front court, Julian Reese has nearly matched his career-high totals from last season. Even more impressive is that Reese has been hitting these marks playing 7.3 fewer minutes per game than last year.
    • Additionally, his 3.3 offensive rebounds per game leads the Big Ten and are the most for a Maryland player since James Padgett averaged 3.3 in 2011-12
    Julian Reese at Rutgers

    Queen Is The Truth

    • Derik Queen arrived in College Park as one of the most heralded recruits in program history and has lived up to the hype early in the season. From starting his career with a 20/20 double-double to scoring a career-high 26 points at No. 8 Purdue, Queen has quickly shown he is one of the best players in the country.
    • Queen leads Maryland in scoring at 16.2 points per game and is second with 7.8 rebounds per game. His scoring average is tied as the second-best among all-time Maryland freshmen dating back to 1947-48.

    • Since 2008-09, there have been 34 20-point games by Maryland freshmen. In just his first 17 games, Queen already has six.
    • Since 1996-96, Derik Queen’s career-high 26-point performance at No. 8 Purdue marked the most points scored by a Maryland freshman in a true road game since Terrell Stoglin and Justin Jackson each scored 28 points in 2011 and 2017, respectively.
    • Queen is part of an exceptional class of 2024-25 freshmen. He is now 10th for overall rookie scoring and is the top center among all NCAA freshmen. Queen is one of six freshmen nationally to score 20 points or more in six games this season.

    Heavy snow showers in Maryland

ALERT DAY: Heavy snow showers in Maryland for Monday

METEOROLOGIST TOM. WELL, IT WAS A WINTRY DAY, NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT. TEMPERATURES PRETTY NORMAL FOR EARLY JANUARY, BUT THE COLD WAS ACCOMPANIED BY SOME GUSTY WINDS. AND THOSE SNOW SHOWERS THAT ROLLED THROUGH IN THE AFTERNOON. 26 FOR THE LOW THIS MORNING AT BWI MARSHALL. AND AN AFTERNOON HIGH OF 42. BOTH OF THOSE ARE PRETTY MUCH NORMAL FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR. THE SNOW SHOWERS WE HAD EARLIER ARE NOW MOVING OFF THE COAST NEAR OCEAN CITY AND OUT TO SEA, SO THINGS HAVE QUIETED DOWN AS FAR AS SNOW GOES AROUND BALTIMORE, BUT WEST OF INTERSTATE 81, UP INTO THE MOUNTAINS AND WESTERN MARYLAND. THERE WILL CONTINUE TO BE SNOW SHOWERS FALLING TONIGHT, EVEN INTO TOMORROW, AS COLD AIR COMES IN POURING ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES. YOU CAN SEE THOSE LAKE EFFECT SNOW SHOWERS COMING IN FROM THE NORTH AND WEST AS THOSE VERY COLD TEMPERATURES COME OUT OF CANADA NOW AND PUSH INTO THE MID-ATLANTIC AND THE NORTHEAST. HIGH PRESSURE WILL BRING CLEARING SKIES SO WE’LL BE ABLE TO ENJOY SOME SUNSHINE TOMORROW, BUT IT IS GOING TO BE COLD FOR BOTH SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. REALLY CHILLY STUFF PUSHING ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE GULF COAST. SO THAT’S THE COLD AIR THAT YOU NEED FOR A SNOWSTORM. AND HERE’S THE STORM SYSTEM ITSELF JUST NOW REACHING THE WASHINGTON-OREGON COASTAL AREAS. IT WILL MOVE ACROSS THE NORTHERN ROCKIES AND THEN DIVE DOWN TO THE SOUTH AND HEAD OUR WAY OVER THE WEEKEND, ARRIVING IN OUR REGION ON MONDAY. SO WE TRACK IT WITH CLEAR SKIES AND COLD TEMPERATURES IN THE MORNING AROUND BALTIMORE, BUT SOME SNOW CONTINUING IN THE MOUNTAINS IN THE AFTERNOON. TOMORROW WE MAY SEE A LITTLE BIT OF CLOUD COVER, BUT IT’S GOING TO BE A BREEZY AND COLD DAY. BUNDLE UP IF YOU’RE HEADED TO THE RAVENS GAME. EVEN COLDER ON SUNDAY MORNING. TEENS AND LOW 20S HERE IN SINGLE DIGITS OUT IN WESTERN MARYLAND AND PRETTY QUIET BUT COLD THROUGHOUT THE DAY ON SUNDAY, SO THERE ARE NO WEATHER PROBLEMS ANTICIPATED OTHER THAN THE COLD OVER THE WEEKEND. THE SNOW IS LIKELY TO ARRIVE BETWEEN ABOUT 3 A.M. AND 4 A.M. OR SO IN THE MORNING ON MONDAY, AND THEN QUICKLY CUT ACROSS THE AREA MONDAY AFTERNOON. AS IT’S MOVING THROUGH, THOUGH, IT WILL DUMP A FEW INCHES OF SNOW IN OUR REGION. THE MONDAY MORNING RUSH HOUR LOOKS LIKE IT WILL BE THE TRICKIEST PART OF THAT SNOWSTORM TONIGHT, 21 TO 28 UNDER PARTLY CLOUDY SKIES AND HIGH TEMPERATURES. TOMORROW. PROBABLY STAYING BELOW FREEZING FOR MOST OF US AND FEELING EVEN COLDER WITH THOSE WINDS GUSTING OVER 35 MILES AN HOUR. SO AGAIN, FOR THE RAVENS GAME, WIND CHILLS ARE GOING TO BE DOWN IN THE 20S AT KICKOFF AND PROBABLY GOING TO FEEL LIKE IT’S IN THE TEENS AS THOSE BREEZY, COLD CONDITIONS CONTINUE INTO THE LATE AFTERNOON AND EVENING. SO WINDY AND COLD. COLD SATURDAY, A SUNNY BUT STILL COLD SUNDAY, AND THEN A WINTER STORM ROLLS IN ON MONDAY AGAIN ARRIVING BEFORE DAWN AND THEN TAPERING OFF IN THE LATE AFTERNOON AND EVENING. AND IT DOES LOOK LIKE A SOLID 3 TO 6IN OF SNOW STRIPED ACROSS MOST OF CENTRAL MARYLAND, WITH HEAVIER AMOUNTS IN CENTRAL AND WESTERN VIRGINIA. THESE AREAS AROUND BALTIMORE, THOUGH, WILL SEE A BEST, MOST SIGNIFICANT SNOW WE’VE HAD HERE IN A COUPLE OF YEARS SOUTH OF ANNAPOLIS, DOWN INTO SOUTHERN MARYLAND DC AREA. PROBABLY GOING TO GET A LITTLE MORE THAN WE’LL SEE HERE IN BALTIMORE. WE’LL BE TWEAKING THE SNOWFALL AMOUNTS IN THE STORM TRACK AS WE GO THROUGH THE WEEKEND. THERE. YOU SEE THE STORM ON MONDAY, FOLLOWED BY

  • Maryland School District to Move Individualized Education Plans Online

Maryland School District to Move Individualized Education Plans Online

(TNS) — Frederick County Public Schools plans to implement an online version of Individualized Education Plans in the 2025-26 school year.

Individualized Education Plans, or IEPs, are programs developed specifically to meet the needs of individual students, including those with disabilities.

The online version is intended to be customizable, include parent portal access and have translation services available.

FCPS put out a bid for the online service in February. In August, the Frederick County Board of Education voted to award the request for proposal to Public Consulting Group, a firm based in Boston.

The online IEP services cost $1,353,500 over five years for licensing, maintenance and support fees, according to the bid.

Year one of the service is funded through FCPS’ fiscal year 2025 operating budget, which was approved over the summer. Future funding is contingent on board approval of future operating budgets, according to the bid.

Public Consulting Group is the firm that audited the district’s services for special education programs after the U.S. Department of Justice in 2020 found the district was systematically misusing seclusion and physical restraint against students living with disabilities.

Troy Keller, director of special education, specialized programs and supports at FCPS, said the online IEPs will launch during the 2025-26 school year.

He said when he began working in the school district in 2020, he received a lot of feedback, especially from special education teachers, that the IEP system was “not super user friendly.”

Keller said the school district is unable to customize or change the way data is inputted into IEPs with the current system because FCPS uses the Maryland State Department of Education’s IEP system.

“Because we don’t oversee the system, we weren’t able to do that,” he said. “That was the ultimate ask, is that regardless of what company we work with, we want to be able to customize it for our teachers and all of our staff who input IEPs.”

Keller added that the time and effort it takes teachers to input information into the online IEPs will decrease “because we will learn how to make it efficient.” He said technological advancements have increased the number of options for creating IEPs.

“As we understand the needs of the county, we’re able to adapt to that and ask for changes within the system so that everyone that’s at the table can understand the IEP,” Keller said.

He said the online IEP has a portal that allows for parents to access their child’s IEP records, progress reports, “and they’ll be able to maintain those records in a digital fashion.”

Keller added that the new IEP format has translation services built into it and that the online records will be automatically translated.

He said currently, the process to translate an IEP would be to go through an FCPS translator or to send it to a third-party translator, which could take a couple of days.

“Whereas now, it will be completely automated, and they will get it the same day they have the IEP,” Keller said.

He said FCPS is getting stakeholder feedback together now and will discuss in the spring when the district plans to launch the online service.

Five companies submitted a bid to FCPS for the online IEP system.

PowerSchool Group, an education technology platform headquartered in California, submitted a bid that would have cost $684,912 over five years.

However, PowerSchool Group’s bid showed additional costs of $16,977 for initial training services and $75,489 for data conversion and implementation services.

PowerSchool Group’s bid also showed a rate of $2.61 per IEP distributed and 56 cents per 504 Plan distributed, also as additional costs. A 504 Plan is a formal agreement that students living with disabilities are provided with accommodations.

Public Consulting Group’s bid price showed those same additional costs as included in the overall cost.

The Maryland School District is taking a step towards modernization by moving individualized education plans (IEPs) online. This new initiative aims to streamline the process for students with special needs and their families, making it easier to access and update their educational plans.

By digitizing IEPs, students and their families will have 24/7 access to important documents, goals, and progress reports. This will allow for more efficient communication between parents, teachers, and support staff, ultimately benefiting the student’s educational experience.

The move to online IEPs also aligns with the district’s efforts to embrace technology in education and improve accessibility for all students. This shift reflects a commitment to meeting the diverse needs of students and ensuring they receive the support and resources necessary for their success.

Overall, this transition to online IEPs demonstrates the Maryland School District’s dedication to providing a more efficient and effective educational experience for students with special needs.

  • Washington’s basketball coach has big concerns about Maryland, and a former Terp joining his roster

Washington’s basketball coach has big concerns about Maryland, and a former Terp joining his roster

That two-game mini-Big Ten schedule early in the season didn’t fully introduce the conference’s West Coast additions, who stayed in their region and played each other. Now, with the Big Ten’s full slate arriving, they’ll begin competing with longstanding Big Ten teams. It’ll be an interesting stylistic clash, pitting teams accustomed to the Pac 12’s finesse and speed against opponents chiseled by the Big Ten’s physicality.

That’s a concern for Danny Sprinkle, whose Washington team hosts Maryland tonight.

“They’re going to see a totally different body type than they’ve seen in the Pac-12, and the West Coast for that matter … You’re going to see some big, physical hogs, man. I mean on every team. It’s going to be smash-mouth basketball. It really is,” Sprinkle said. “They’re great, but that’s what you deal with in the Big Ten.”

Sprinkle was asked about the matchup between star Maryland freshman Derik Queen and Washington center Great Osobor, who leads Washington in scoring (14.2 points per game), rebounds (8.7), assists (3.6) and steals (2.1).

Maryland Basketball Recruiting: Local guard excited by Gillespie role, location and Terps’ coaching staff

“Queen, if he’s not the best freshman, he’s one of them,” Sprinkle said. “Enjoy him this year, because he’ll be in the NBA next year. He’s that good. He’s a monster.”

Washington, ranked No. 77 by KenPom, is averaging the second-fewest points per game in the Big Ten (74.6). Maryland is averaging the third-most (87.2) and its plus-27.1 point per game margin is No. 1 in college basketball.

“We have to do a great job at taking care of the basketball … They feed off turnovers, and if you turn the ball over, you’re going to get blown out,” Sprinkle said. “We have to do a great job of getting shots on the rim and controlling the tempo. If you try to play fast with them, you’re in trouble. And the analytics show that, too.”

Maryland and Washington have little in common. They’re separated by 2,300 miles and have never played each other. But there are a few recruiting connections. Injured fifth-year Washington big man Franck Kepnang, who began his career at Oregon, was once a top Maryland recruiting target. And former Maryland forward Mady Traore, averaging more than 17 points and 10 rebounds per game for Frank Phillips Community College, signed with the Huskies in December.

“He’s a 6-11, like, electric athlete,” Sprinkle said in November. “He brings dynamic athleticism and size and length, which we need,”

Washington’s Head Basketball Coach, Mike Hopkins, has big concerns about Maryland as the two teams prepare to face off in an upcoming game. Not only is Maryland a formidable opponent on the court, but Hopkins is also anxiously awaiting the addition of a former Terp to his roster.

The former Terp in question is none other than standout forward, Jalen Smith. Smith, who declared for the NBA draft after a successful college career at Maryland, has recently decided to return to school and transfer to Washington. This news has sparked excitement among fans and players alike, but Hopkins knows that integrating a new player into the team can present challenges.

“I have no doubt that Jalen will bring a lot to our team with his talent and experience,” Hopkins said in a recent press conference. “But we need to make sure we’re all on the same page and working together as a cohesive unit. It’s going to take some time to adjust and build chemistry, especially with such a short timeline before our game against Maryland.”

Despite his concerns, Hopkins is confident in his team’s ability to rise to the occasion and compete at a high level. With the addition of Smith, Washington’s roster is looking stronger than ever, and they are eager to prove themselves against a tough opponent like Maryland.

As the game approaches, all eyes will be on Hopkins and his team as they navigate the challenges of integrating a new player and taking on a formidable opponent. Stay tuned for what is sure to be an exciting matchup between Washington and Maryland.

    Maryland Terrapins 2024-25 Statistics:

    Record: 11-2 (1-1)

Points For per Game: 87.2 ppg (10th)

Points Against per Game: 61.1 ppg (10th)

    Adjusted Offensive Efficiency: 116.0 (39th)

    Adjusted Defensive Efficiency: 3.7 (8th)

    Strength of Schedule: 347th

    Maryland Key Players:

    G- Ja’Kobi Gillespie, Jr. 6’1, 186: 13.7 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 4.5 apg, 50.8% FG, 42.9% 3pt, 95.2% FT

Gillespie came over from Belmont where he was their star point guard and while his scoring totals are down due to fewer shot attempts, he is averaging more assists and half as many turnovers. He does everything you want from your point guard shooting 60%+ on 2’s, 40%+ on 3’s, 95%+ on FTs and a nearly 4:1 assist-to-turnover ratio. Stud.

    G- Rodney Rice, So. 6’4, 198: 11.8 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 2.1 apg, 43.2% FG, 35.1% 3pt, 82.6% FT

It has been a breakout season for Rice who missed last season after transferring from a bench role at Virginia Tech but has become an instant starter and put up good efficiency numbers as a 4th/5th option. He normally takes 6+ three-point attempts per game and has been making 2-3 of them for the most part. The rebounding and steals numbers aren’t great but he also doesn’t turn it over to compensate.

    G- Selton Miguel, Sr. 6’4, 217: 12.1 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 2.0 apg, 48.0% FG, 41.5% 3pt, 80.0% FT

Last year Miguel averaged nearly 15 points per game at South Florida but has been thriving in a less demanding role with Maryland. His three-point progression has been something to watch going from 21% to 33% to 39% to 42% in his career. He and Rice have been largely interchangeable so far and are comfortable being in a supporting position knocking down open shots.

    F- Julian Reese, So. 6’9, 252: 12.8 ppg, 9.1 rpg, 1.7 apg, 59.4% FG, 76.2% FT

Reese was basically the Big Ten’s version of Great Osobor last year when he averaged a nearly double-double on 13.7 points per game. He’s ostensibly a 6’9 center with a range that doesn’t extend outside the paint and is a solid shot blocker but not an amazing one. This year his rebounding has gone to another level and he’s 10th in the country in offensive rebound rate while shooting 60% from the field.

    C- Derik Queen, Fr. 6’10, 246: 16.8 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 1.0 bpg, 59.2% FG, 12.5% 3pt, 79.0% FT

The reason that Maryland has ascended to looking like a Big Ten title contender is the addition of Queen who has been in the conversation for best Freshman in the country despite an absolutely loaded freshman class. Queen is basically just Isaiah Stewart if he settled for three-pointers more often but was a legitimately good passer, averaging 2.2 assists per game. Except Queen to dominate in the paint all night.

    The Outlook

You could certainly argue that Maryland is maybe a tad overrated despite essentially ranking 26th in the AP Poll (they were 6 points behind #25 Baylor 139 to 133). Maryland is 10th in both scoring offense and defense but have gone up against one of the easiest schedules in the country. They’re just 2-2 against teams ranked 109th or better at KenPom and 3 of those games were decided by 7 or fewer points. That doesn’t scream Big Ten title contender.

But that 4th game was a 34-point victory over a good Ohio State team and they have bludgeoned every other team they’ve played to death. Maryland is 9-0 with all of the wins coming by 15+ points against teams ranked 55th or worse at KenPom.

A look at the KenPom scouting report shows a team with basically no flaws. They rank in the top-75 nationally in almost every major statistical category with the only exceptions being free throw rate and free throw percentage. For a team with two dominant big men you’d expect them to draw more fouls but other than that this team has no weaknesses.

If there was one game this season the Huskies wanted to have Franck Kepnang healthy and available, it was this one to counter the front line of Queen and Reese. Either would be among the top-5 centers in the conference and they play for the same team often at the same time. Expect Washington to go with a starting lineup of Harris, Breidenbach, and Osobor to counter the size of their front line. Also maybe expect to see some KC Ibekwe emergency minutes due to foul trouble inside.

Even if you happen to catch Maryland on a day when they’re missing shots, you’re probably not going to have a good chance. Why? They don’t lose the possessions battle. Maryland ranks top-20 in turnover rate on both offense and defense and are top-55 in rebounding rates on both sides of the ball. If they miss a shot, they’ll probably get the rebound. They’re not going to turn it over. They’re not going to get their shots blocked (1st in the country at 4.1%). They’re going to play fast and beat you in transition.

    Is there any good news?

Washington did get back Wilhelm Breidenbach after losing without him against Seattle U so their front line is slightly better equipped to face this Maryland team. Obviously though it would help a lot to have Kepnang healthy. The Huskies are 6-0 when they shoot just 32% from the 3-point line. Washington has had 4 games where they make at least 10 threes in a game and have scored at least 73 points in all of them. That’s the minimum they’ll need to stay in it against Maryland but it is possible even if not likely.

It feels like this is the start to Big Ten play for the Huskies since their earlier two conference games were against former Pac-12 opponents with UCLA and USC. But this is what life is going to be like in the league this year. There are almost no easy games. Only one other team besides Washington (Minnesota) ranks outside the top-80 at Torvik. Every game is against at least an NIT-quality squad and the Huskies will have to find a way to win the occasional game like this one to not be the league’s doormat this season. I’m not optimistic that tonight is the night they get it done.

Holy Cross Crusaders vs. Loyola Maryland Greyhounds live stream info, start time, TV channel: How to watch NCAA Basketball on TV, stream online

    Who’s Playing

Loyola Maryland Greyhounds @ Holy Cross Crusaders

Current Records: Loyola Maryland 5-6, Holy Cross 8-5

    How To Watch

    What to Know

Holy Cross is preparing for their first Patriot League matchup of the season on Thursday. They and the Loyola Maryland Greyhounds will face off at 6:00 p.m. ET at Hart Center Arena. The Crusaders have been getting the ball to fall more lately as they’ve increased their point totals each of their last three games.

Holy Cross’ season wasn’t pretty last year but it’s starting to look like struggles are in the rearview. Couldn’t have asked for a better way to wrap up 2024 than the 82-46 stomp they got against Regis College.

Holy Cross was working as a unit and finished the game with 20 assists. That’s a new trend for them: they were averaging 10.8 assists per game earlier this season, but in their last five contests they’ve averaged 15.8.

Meanwhile, Loyola Maryland was no doubt aware that the odds were against they in their game with DePaul but that awareness did nothing to prevent the predicted outcome. Loyola Maryland found themselves the reluctant recipients of an 84-65 punch to the gut against DePaul on Saturday. The Greyhounds have now taken an ‘L’ in back-to-back games.

Loyola Maryland’s loss came about despite a quality game from Jacob Theodosiou, who went 9 for 10 en route to 22 points. Theodosiou had some trouble finding his footing against Hampton two weeks ago, so this was a step in the right direction.

Holy Cross is on a roll lately: they’ve won four of their last five matches, which provided a nice bump to their 8-5 record this season. As for Loyola Maryland, they now have a losing record at 5-6.

Keep an eye on the arc in Thursday’s matchup: Holy Cross has been dynamite from deep this season, having drained 39.6% of their threes per game. It’s a different story for Loyola Maryland, though, as they’ve only made 29.5% of their threes this season. Given Holy Cross’ sizable advantage in that area, Loyola Maryland will need to find a way to close that gap.

Going forward, Holy Cross is expected to win a tight contest, barring any buzzer beaters. This will be their first time playing as the favorites at home this season.

    Odds

Holy Cross is a slight 2.5-point favorite against Loyola Maryland, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 2.5-point spread, and stayed right there.

    The over/under is 140.5 points.
