Will Paul George Play in 76ers-Cavaliers Matchup?
Lately, Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George has missed some time lately due to a groin-related setback.
Dating back to January 8, George missed his first game in over a month. Although he returned to appear in two games, George was absent on the first night of the back-to-back set, which started with a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
George was back on the floor to face the New York Knicks for a 43-minute shift. He was downgraded on the injury report for the first road matchup against the Indiana Pacers.
Not only did George miss the matchup against the Pacers, but he was also ruled out against the Milwaukee Bucks the following night. The Sixers lost both games by double digits.
Once again, George was considered questionable in the matchup against the Denver Nuggets. That time around, he wasn’t downgraded.
Cleared for action, George played 28 minutes against the Nuggets. He shot 5-11 from the field, scoring 11 points. George also racked up five rebounds and nine assists. The Sixers dropped the matchup with a 35-point loss.
Heading into the Friday matchup against the Cavs, the Sixers expect to be shorthanded, missing a handful of players. George is not expected to be one of them. The nine-time All-Star has been left off of the injury report and is on pace to play.
Sixers Rule Out Joel Embiid
Joel Embiid was spotted putting in some work after the session, but it was revealed he was not a part of the action on Thursday. That was already a bad sign Embiid might sit out against the Cavs on Friday.
Sure enough, that will be the case. According to the 76ers’ injury report, Embiid has been ruled out against the Cavaliers once again.
Not only does his absence on Friday mark his third absence against the Cavs this year, but it’s also the 10th absence in a row for Embiid.
Nov 13, 2024; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid (21) reacts with Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell (45) after the game at Wells Fargo Center. Mandatory Credit: Kyle Ross-Imagn Images / Kyle Ross-Imagn Images Lately, multiple setbacks have kept Embiid off the court. From the beginning of the year, the star center has been on an injury management plan, taking it easy with his knee, which was surgically repaired last season.
After suffering a sprained foot on Christmas Day, Embiid appeared in four of the Sixers’ next five games. Unfortunately, he re-aggravated the setback, which caused Embiid to miss six games in a row.
Just as Embiid was ready to return from the knee setback, he started experiencing swelling in his knee again. The team ruled him out for at least three games. Friday’s matchup will mark the fourth absence due to knee injury management.

As the Philadelphia 76ers prepare to face off against the Cleveland Cavaliers, all eyes are on the status of star player Paul George. The six-time NBA All-Star has been dealing with a lingering toe injury that has kept him out of the lineup for several games.Fans and analysts alike are eagerly awaiting news on whether George will be able to suit up for the highly anticipated matchup. The 76ers are hoping to have their dynamic forward back on the court to bolster their chances against the Cavaliers.
George’s presence on the court could make a huge difference in the outcome of the game, as his scoring ability and defensive prowess are unmatched. It remains to be seen if he will be cleared to play, but one thing is for sure – if Paul George is able to take the court, the 76ers will have a much better chance of coming out on top in this crucial game.

Memphis Grizzlies vs Timberwolves matchup
Zach Edey had a tough game on Monday afternoon against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Grizzlies’ center donned a mask after suffering a nose injury in Friday’s win over the Spurs, but there were few scoring opportunities against Rudy Gobert and the Timberwolves’ defense. Edey played 19 minutes, but he attempted just two shots during the game at FedExForum.
Edey’s scoring has been down compared to his numbers earlier in the season. He hasn’t scored in double figures since the Dec. 27 win over the Pelicans.
Memphis ultimately earned a comeback 108-106 win over the Timberwolves on MLK Day. It was the Grizzlies’ third-straight win. They’re back in action on Wednesday when they host the Hornets at FedExForum.

3 keys for top-20 matchup
Free Press sports writer Tony Garcia shares three quick thoughts and a prediction for No. 20 Michigan basketball‘s road game at No. 12 Purdue on Friday (8 p.m., Fox) in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Meeting the standard
Although the Wolverines (14-4, 6-1 Big Ten) are ahead of Purdue (15-5, 7-2) in the conference standings after the Boilermakers were upset by Ohio State on Tuesday, the coaching staff is paying its respect to the reigning conference champion, which made it all the way to the national title game a season ago.
“They’ve been the standard in the league for the last several years, so we have the utmost respect for their program,” U-M assistant coach Mike Boynton Jr. said Thursday. “We know we’re gonna be going into a really hostile environment, against a really well-coached team. Coming off a loss, they’ll be really highly motivated, obviously trying to stay at the top of the league.
“We’re gonna have to play some really good basketball to give ourselves a chance.”
Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.
NO FEAR:Michigan basketball’s Tre Donaldson embracing villain role for Purdue clash
Offensively, Purdue is No. 11 in efficiency (122.3), No. 18 on 3-point shooting percentage (38.4%), No. 21 in effective field goals (56.3) and No. 57 on 2-point perfentage(55.4%). Defensively, the Boilermakers are No. 26 in efficiency (96.5) and No. 31 in limiting opponents’ 3-pointers (31.1%).
It’s all because of the system they run, according to U-M head coach Dusty May.
“I think coach (Matt) Painter is one of the best coaches (in the country) in all facets,” May said Monday. “They’ve climbed the mountain, and now they’re managing to stay at the top of the mountain pretty consistently. I can’t say enough good things.”
Head of the snake
Contrary to some narratives, Purdue wasn’t only good because of two-time Wooden Award winner Zach Edey, now in the NBA. Point guard Braden Smith still continues to run the Boilermakers’ offense at a high level, averaging an efficient 15 points per game and a Big Ten-leading 8.9 assists per night.
“He’s a surgeon,” May said. “His ability to make his teammates better, to make the right play … he never looks tired. He never gets sped up. You rarely see him make even a solid decision; he makes good decisions repeatedly.
“He knows what he’s looking at. His ability to think the game and manipulate your defense. I can go on and on.”
Purdue runs a lot of pick-and-roll action with Smith and Trey Kaufmann-Renn, a 6-foot-8 forward who has stepped up for Painter’s squad. He leads the team with 18.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game and U-M is going to have to figure out the best way to defend the action — hard hedges, drop coverage, fighting through, switching no matter what or what’s most likely, some combination of them all.
“We’re gonna play a ton of pick-and-rolls with Smith and Trey Kaufman-Renn on Friday, so that’ll put us in a different situation in terms of how much to help,” Boynton said. “They have a lot of really good shooters, so you might have to figure out how to play those pick-and-rolls two-on-two as much as you can, so you also don’t allow Braden Smith to find Fletcher Loyer or five or six 3s, Myles Coving for five or six 3s. Now you’re dealing with too many things at once.
“So, if we can figure out a way to deal with the pick-and-rolls in this particular game two-on-two, that’ll give us the best chance to win.”
Vlad Goldin stretching the floor
If U-M is going to pull off the victory, it’s likely going to need to get production on 3-pointers.
Ohio State (11-for-23) got 24 more points on 3s than Purdue (3-for-9) Tuesday and the good news for U-M is that it has an additional 3-point shooter with which to threaten the Boilermakers. Vladislav Goldin, U-M’s 7-foot-1, 250-pound center who didn’t attempt a shot from behind the arc in the first three seasons of his career has now taken at least two tries in five of the past six games.
“As a coach who spends a lot of time focusing on defense, I think about if I had to prepare for us, all the things that I would imagine I have to take into account,” Boynton said. “A month ago, Vlad making 3s wouldn’t have been one of those things.”
That includes Sunday’s game against Northwestern, when he made a career-high three of six attempts. Thatsuccess rate actually dropped his season-long percentage from 60% to 56.3% (9-for-16). It’s just another option for U-M, which Boynton said has to get back to “shooting the way we were” earlier in the season.
Michigan vs Purdue prediction
Tre Donaldson may not be too concerned about the Mackey Arena environment, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a real thing. The Wolverines will be well-rested heading into their biggest game of the season to date and have all the tools necessary to pull off the victory. Will they? Purdue hasn’t lost consecutive home games since February 2020, just weeks before the coronavirus pandemic shut down the season. U-M will come close, but ultimately fall just short. The pick: Purdue 79, U-M 76.

As two powerhouse teams prepare to face off in a highly anticipated top-20 matchup, the keys to victory will be crucial for both sides. Here are three key factors that could determine the outcome of the game:1. Strong defense: In a matchup between two top-ranked teams, defense will be key. Both teams will need to bring their A-game on the defensive end to limit their opponent’s scoring opportunities. This means tight man-to-man defense, effective communication, and the ability to force turnovers. Whichever team can lock down defensively and disrupt their opponent’s offense will have a significant advantage.
2. Efficient offense: While defense is important, neither team can afford to neglect their offense. Both teams will need to execute their offensive game plan effectively, move the ball well, and capitalize on scoring opportunities. This includes hitting shots from beyond the arc, attacking the basket, and making smart decisions with the ball. Whichever team can consistently score and put pressure on the opposing defense will have a good chance of coming out on top.
3. Mental toughness: In a high-stakes top-20 matchup, mental toughness will be crucial. Both teams will face adversity at some point during the game, whether it’s a scoring drought, foul trouble, or a momentum shift. The team that can stay composed, stay focused, and maintain their intensity throughout the game will have a significant advantage. This means staying disciplined on both ends of the floor, staying positive and supporting each other, and not letting the pressure of the moment get to them.
In conclusion, the team that can excel in these three key areas – defense, offense, and mental toughness – will have the best chance of coming out on top in this top-20 matchup. It’s sure to be an intense and exciting game, and these keys will be crucial for both teams as they battle it out on the court.

5-star prospect visiting South Carolina women’s basketball for top 5 matchup against LSU
South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley has some big-time irons in the class of 2026 recruiting fire. One of them is 5-star power forward Oliviyah Edwards from Elite Sports Academy in Tacoma, Washington.
As GamecockCentral readers know already, Edwards is on campus this weekend for an unofficial visit. South Carolina was scheduled to take on LSU on Thursday night, but the poor weather moved the game to Friday.
The Gamecocks made Edwards’ top 10 list last summer and appear to be a real contender in her recruitment. The Tennessee Lady Volunteers, LSU Tigers, North Carolina Tar Heels, Duke Blue Devils, Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, Southern Cal Trojans, Washington Huskies, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish all are involved in courting the 5-star recruit as competition to South Carolina.
[Win tickets: South Carolina-Auburn WBB]
As a prospect, Edwards is a dynamic and explosive athlete. She shares a lot of traits with current South Carolina women’s basketball forward Ashlyn Watkins. Listed at 6’3″, she has a much longer wingspan and is a much more proficient leaper than most others in the women’s game. That leaping ability translates to Edwards being a comfortable dunker and a big-time rebounder.
However, she is becoming a more skilled player on offense, as well. Her jumper is improving, and her ballhandling is good enough that she can utilize her unmatched athleticism to win off the bounce when matched up against slower post players away from the basket.
On the other end of the court, she can guard virtually any type of opposing player. Edwards’ quick feet let her do a better job chasing smaller guards than most high school bigs. Her length also allows her to guard even the biggest players on other teams. She’s a ridiculous shot-blocker and manages to get her hands on seemingly every loosely-dribbled ball or lazy pass that comes near her.
[Join GamecockCentral: $1 for 7 days]
In the latest On3 player rankings update, Edwards is the No. 6 overall national prospect. She also is the No. 2 power forward and the No. 1 player from the state of Washington.
Edwards plans to take her official visits (including one to South Carolina) at a later date. According to Edwards, herself, she will announce her college choice following those official visits. That should come before her senior season begins next November.
Edwards should be on hand for this weekend’s big-time matchup against LSU. The Gamecocks and Tigers will tip off at 5:00 p.m. on Friday night at Colonial Life Arena. ESPN will broadcast the game, and the ESPN app will make it available for streaming. Because of the weather-mandated changes, College GameDay will not be part of the broadcast as originally scheduled.
Exciting news for South Carolina women’s basketball fans! A highly coveted 5-star prospect will be visiting the Gamecocks for their top 5 matchup against LSU.This prospect is considered one of the best in the nation and her presence at the game is sure to generate a lot of buzz. South Carolina’s women’s basketball program has been on the rise in recent years, and landing a recruit of this caliber would be a huge boost for the team.
The Gamecocks will be facing off against LSU, another powerhouse in women’s college basketball, in what is sure to be a thrilling matchup. With both teams ranked in the top 5, this game is a must-watch for any basketball fan.
If you’re in the area, be sure to come out and support the Gamecocks as they look to impress this top recruit and continue their winning streak. This is a game you won’t want to miss!

Wild bring back Kaprizov, Spurgeon ahead of Utah matchup
ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Wild have managed to hold together a highly competitive team all season despite a series of injuries that have sidelined several of their most important players.
Their lineup got a big boost Thursday when star Kirill Kaprizov and captain Jared Spurgeon were activated from injured reserve before their game against Utah.
“They had a long road to get back and put in a lot of hard work, so it’s nice that they’re getting an opportunity to play,” coach John Hynes said after the team’s morning skate.
Still missing are defenseman Jonas Brodin (lower body) for the seventh straight game and left winger Marcus Johansson (concussion) for the third game in a row.
Kaprizov last played Dec. 23 against the Chicago Blackhawks. He missed 12 games with a lower body injury that lingered longer than the Wild initially believed it would, and they took a cautious midseason approach to the return of their leading scorer and first-line left winger.
Kaprizov was among the NHL leaders in goals and points and was legitimately in the mix of MVP candidates before he was hurt. He has 23 goals and 27 assists in 34 games, still ranking 11th in the league in goals despite the absence.
“I just try don’t think about this. Now I am just happy to come back,” Kaprizov said. “I don’t play one month. I don’t think about points or something like that. I just want to feel good in the game.”
His biggest challenge might be learning how to take it easy when he needs to between games, a workhorse skater who frequently stays on the ice well past the end of practice.
“He’s got to do what he needs to do to get himself ready and prepared, but then as the season goes on, sometimes you need to maybe tweak some of those things like that,” Hynes said. “That’s not necessarily my department. It’s him with the trainers and the strength coach and things like that. Nothing major, just make sure he’s feeling good and prepared to play but also making sure that he’s managing himself.”
Spurgeon missed nine games with a lower body injury that he said Thursday included his ankle and knee. The 15th-year veteran defenseman was taken down Dec. 31 by a slew foot move that got Nashville Predators forward Zachary L’Heureux a three-game suspension.
In his first interview since the injury, Spurgeon declined to comment specifically about the play. After being limited to 16 games last season because of hip and back injuries, Spurgeon was healthy and thriving until this latest setback.
“That was the most frustrating part, just having to go back in the gym and doing the same stuff all over again. It brings back some bad memories,” Spurgeon said.
Spurgeon and the Wild were pleasantly surprised by the relatively brief absence after his awkward and frightening crash into the boards caused them to immediately fear a season-ending injury.
“His work ethic was unbelievable. I thought he might’ve been back like a week earlier just watching him off the ice and in the gym with the work he put in,” Hynes said, adding: “All those leadership things that he brings are great to have and missed when he’s not in the lineup, then obviously what he brings on the ice, the way that he can play and what he means to our team in those situations. It’s great to have him back.”
The Minnesota Wild have announced that they will be bringing back two key players, Kirill Kaprizov and Jared Spurgeon, ahead of their matchup against the Utah team. Kaprizov, the dynamic forward, has been a standout player for the Wild this season, leading the team in scoring. Spurgeon, the team’s captain and top defenseman, adds a strong presence on the blue line.Their return is sure to give the Wild a boost as they look to secure a victory against their opponent from Utah. Fans can expect an exciting game as these two players make their comeback to the lineup. Stay tuned for what promises to be an intense and competitive matchup.
