  • Matt Rhule set to hire Mike Ekeler as special teams coordinator

Nebraska football and head coach Matt Rhule have found its next special teams coordinator.

Inside Nebraska can confirm Mike Ekeler will lead Nebraska’s special teams in 2025. Ekeler spent the past four years on Josh Heupel’s staff at Tennessee as special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach.

Ekeler has plenty of ties to the state of Nebraska and the Husker football program. He’s from David City and coached Nebraska’s linebackers for three seasons for Bo Pelini from 2008-10.

Ekeler replaces former Nebraska special teams coordinator Ed Foley, who Rhule hired to his first staff in December 2022 but was let go by Rhule in early January upon his contract expiring on Dec. 31, 2024. That decision came after the Huskers’ major two-year struggles on special teams, the worst of which came during the 2024 season and ultimately culminated in the biggest breaking point – game-changing mistakes by the special teams units that paved the way for the Huskers’ 13-10 loss at Iowa in November.

Rhule is now turning to Ekeler in the mission to turn things around on those special teams units.

Baylor head coach Matt Rhule is reportedly set to hire Mike Ekeler as the special teams coordinator for the Bears. Ekeler, who most recently served as the inside linebackers coach at North Carolina, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role.

Known for his high energy and attention to detail, Ekeler has a proven track record of success in special teams coaching. He has previously held positions at schools such as Georgia, Nebraska, USC, and Indiana, where he helped develop some of the top special teams units in the country.

Rhule’s decision to bring Ekeler on board is a strategic move aimed at bolstering Baylor’s special teams performance and overall success on the field. With Ekeler’s leadership and guidance, the Bears are sure to see improvements in their kicking, punting, and return game.

Fans are excited to see what Ekeler will bring to the table and are hopeful that his addition will help elevate Baylor’s special teams to new heights in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Nebraska, Matt Rhule plan to scratch Huskers’ spring game amid poaching concerns

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska coach Matt Rhule plans to cancel the Huskers’ spring game in part because of concerns that other programs would use the event to poach his roster.

“The word ‘tampering’ doesn’t exist anymore,” Rhule said Saturday. “It’s just absolute free, open, common market. And so I don’t necessarily want to open up to the outside world. I don’t want these (other coaches) all being able to watch our guys and say, ‘Wow, he looks like a pretty good player. Let’s go get him.’”

Thirty-one players from the Nebraska roster left to enter the transfer portal after the 2024 season, including 12 who have landed at other Power 4 programs. The Huskers have added 15 players from the portal, all of whom are set to participate in spring practice. Thirteen of the 20 incoming freshmen who signed in December are also on campus in Lincoln for the spring.

“To go out and bring in a bunch of new players and then showcase them for all the other schools to watch,” Rhule said, “that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.”

The Big Ten Network televised the Nebraska spring game last year. The event attracted a crowd at Memorial Stadium of 60,452. Nebraska has annually drawn one of the largest crowds in college football to its spring game.

Rhule, the third-year Nebraska coach, said he “dealt with a lot of people offering our players a lot of opportunities” after the spring last season. Two scholarship players — reserve defenders Ru’Quan Buckley and Chief Borders — left Nebraska after the spring to enter the portal in April and early May. Buckley landed at Michigan State and Borders at Pitt.

Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen said on Wednesday that the school would likely still stage something for fans on April 26 at the end of spring practice. It could feature other fall sports teams at the school in something of a preview event, Dannen said.

A shrinking roster as a result of the 105-player limit connected to the NCAA v. House settlement also factors into the likely cancellation. In addition, injury concerns exist. Five Nebraska offensive linemen underwent surgeries after the 2024 season. A year ago, two players suffered knee injuries in the spring game that impacted their readiness to play in the fall.

The elimination of spring games appears on track to become a trend amid the high stakes of revenue sharing and soaring NIL earnings in the portal era. UCF also won’t hold a traditional spring game this year, citing reasons similar to the concerns aired Saturday by Rhule.

Scott Frost, formerly of Nebraska, coaches the Knights.

“It’s like the Home Shopping Network of the spring,” UCF AD Terry Mahajir told the Orlando Sentinel of televised spring games.

Nebraska, Matt Rhule plan to scratch Huskers’ spring game amid poaching concerns

In a shocking turn of events, Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule has announced that the Huskers’ spring game will be scratched due to concerns of poaching by other programs. Rhule, who took over the Nebraska program just a few months ago, has been vocal about his commitment to rebuilding the team and bringing them back to national prominence.

However, with rumors swirling about other programs trying to poach Nebraska’s top recruits, Rhule has made the difficult decision to cancel the spring game in order to protect his players from any potential tampering. This move has sparked controversy among fans and analysts, with some praising Rhule for putting his players’ best interests first, while others criticize him for missing out on a valuable opportunity to showcase the team’s talent.

Despite the cancellation of the spring game, Rhule remains confident in his team’s ability to compete at a high level next season. He has vowed to continue working tirelessly to build a strong program and lead the Huskers to success in the upcoming season.

As the college football world waits to see how this situation unfolds, one thing is clear: Nebraska and Matt Rhule are not backing down in their quest to bring the Huskers back to glory. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Nebraska coach Matt Rhule ‘highly doubts’ team will have spring game because of the transfer portal

Nebraska’s spring game tradition could be going away. And according to coach Matt Rhule, it’s because of the transfer portal.

Rhule said Saturday that he doubted that Nebraska would have a spring scrimmage on April 26 and was blunt in explaining why he didn’t want to showcase his players.

“I don’t know that yet but I’ll be honest with you, I highly doubt it,” Rhule said when asked if Nebraska would have a spring scrimmage on that date. “And I think it’s really fundamentally, I hate to say it like this, it’s really because last year we were one of the more televised spring games and I dealt with a lot of people offering our players a lot of opportunities after that. So to go out and bring in a bunch of new players and showcase them for all the other schools to watch, that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. The word ‘tampering’ doesn’t exist anymore. It’s just absolute free open common market and so I don’t necessarily want to open up to the outside world. I don’t want these guys all able to watch our guys and say, ‘Wow he looks like a pretty good player, let’s go get him.’”

Nebraska’s spring game has been a decades-long tradition and is one of the biggest spring games in college football. Huskers fans routinely pack Memorial Stadium for the game and it produced one of the best spring game moments in recent memory when a then-7-year-old Jack Hoffman scored a touchdown during the game.

Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen said earlier in the week that April 26 would likely feature a “celebration” of the school’s athletes instead of a traditional game.

You can understand why Nebraska is moving away from a spring game in the current era of college sports. Rhule is far from the only college coach who doesn’t want other coaching staffs to see his players right before the spring transfer portal opens.

Don’t be surprised if Nebraska’s move becomes a trend. While coaches are pushing to change transfer window dates, more teams could follow Nebraska and others and change the way they end spring practices as long as there’s a spring transfer window.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers may not have a spring game this year, according to head coach Matt Rhule. In a recent interview, Rhule expressed doubt that the team would be able to hold their annual spring game due to the increasing prevalence of the transfer portal in college football.

The transfer portal allows players to explore their options and potentially transfer to a different school without having to sit out a year. This has led to a significant amount of roster turnover for many teams, making it difficult to field a full team for a spring game.

Rhule acknowledged the challenges that the transfer portal presents for college football programs, and indicated that the team may have to adjust their plans for the spring accordingly. While it’s disappointing for fans to potentially miss out on the opportunity to see their team in action during the spring game, Rhule emphasized that the team’s focus is on preparing for the upcoming season and making sure they have a competitive roster.

It remains to be seen whether the Cornhuskers will ultimately be able to hold a spring game this year, but fans can rest assured that the team is working hard to be ready for the challenges that lie ahead.

  • “Coaches Are Fired Every Year”: Matt Barnes Predicts JJ Redick’s Future Amid Concerning Results

Imagine coaching Lebron James and Co. in a franchise that has a golden history running behind it. The thought of it builds pressure, right? That is why long-time friend Matt Barnes has a word of caution for the new Lakers coach JJ Redick. Coaching a team that has one of the greatest players of all time is not an easy task. And the link between performance with job security is so high that what happens tomorrow you never know. But the 44-year-old shared what he feels about coaches, and what can be JJ’s future.

However, it is not just Barnes who thinks coaches are fired every year. Redick, who has a 4-year deal with the Lakers, too feels there is no security in this job. Although deciding the fortune of the 40-year-old is still premature, he must maintain a focused approach. More so, since he shares the locker room with LeBron and a talented Anthony Davis. And it takes ‘these many’ years to build a team and legacy, felt Barnes.

Responding to a question on N3ON podcast, Matt Barnes said, “It just takes time. You know, normally coaches get two, three, maybe four years to figure s**t out, but coaches are fired every other year, sometimes in their first year now. So, it’s just, we live in a, I want, you know, instant gratification.”

    Article continues below this ad

When Redick was brought up in the conversation as the top prospect of landing this job, many questioned his abilities. While many knew of his strategical methods, most wondered how an inexperienced coach can guide one of the most stories teams. But since JJ joined, the team has improved. But this is still early months to fire someone with an excuse of performance.

The answer to how long should someone take to build a team is debatable. While Tennessee-born has the basketball brain to hang around with the Lakers, it still lies in the management of what they expect from him. And there is no such tough conversation around him now, but recent history has kept coaches on their toes. While Barnes feels Orlando Magic No. 7 will get the respect he deserves, only time will tell where he heads. Especially because it is not easy to make an easy break in LA.

Lakers’ history with coaches, what leads to firing?

The Los Angeles Lakers, having second most NBA championships, are one of the most decorated teams in NBA history. With such records to defend, they have developed a reputation for not hesitating to fire head coaches when results don’t meet expectations. The benchmark is so high that they fired Darvin Ham after only two seasons. That too after taking the team to the NBA Finals in one and winning the NBA’s inaugural In-Season Tournament in another.

The story of Mike Brown is even worse. They hired Big Mike in 2011 but fired him after only five games of the 2012-2013 season, because of his poor 1-4 start. It is believed his firing was the third-fastest coaching change in NBA history. Then Mike D’Antoni, who joined the same season, too faced the same fate because of unmet expectations. The list is long, some lasted a few seasons, some a couple, but the benchmark for all remained the same: give results. Now Barnes’s words seem easy?

    via Imago

History shows the Lakers’ willingness to make quick decisions, as even a championship win, or a rebuilding phase does not guarantee job security within the franchise. And, in the world of sports, today’s heroes can quickly become tomorrow’s villains.

It’s a rollercoaster of glory and scrutiny! And with such a history, Matt Barnes’s former teammate JJ Redick only has two ways, either take the Lakers to the sky or face the axe like the rest.

Former NBA player Matt Barnes recently shared his thoughts on the uncertain future of veteran sharpshooter JJ Redick in a recent podcast episode. With the NBA trade deadline fast approaching and the New Orleans Pelicans struggling to find success this season, Redick’s name has been circulating in trade rumors.

Barnes pointed out that coaches are fired every year in the NBA, and players are often traded as a result of underperforming teams. He predicted that Redick could be on the move soon if the Pelicans continue to struggle and fail to make a playoff push.

Redick, known for his deadly three-point shooting and veteran leadership, could bring valuable experience and scoring to a contending team looking to bolster their roster for a playoff run. However, with the Pelicans currently sitting near the bottom of the Western Conference standings, it may be time for Redick to consider his options for the remainder of the season.

As the trade deadline approaches, all eyes will be on Redick and the Pelicans to see if any moves are made. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Raiders coaching search: Getting to know Pete Carroll hire Matt Capurro

The Las Vegas Raiders have hired Pete Carroll as their new head coach. He is building his new staff. He has reportedly hired Matt Capurro as a vice president of coaching operations.

Let’s get to know Capurro better:

    Last job:

He was the vice president of coaching operations for the Seattle Seahawks from 2010-24.

    Experience with Carroll:

Carroll brought Capurro to Seattle after Capurro had a similar role for Carroll at USC in 2009.

    Raiders’ experience:

Capurro, a Bay Area native, has Silver and Black in his blood. He was a football operations intern from 1998-2003. Spanning 2004-08, Capurro was the assistant to the head coach for multiple coaches.

    What’s his duties:

Capurro is not a coach per se, but he’s a valuable part of the staff. He operates the daily schedule for the head coach and the staff and plans year-round scheduling. The program starts with Capurro.

Why the Raiders would hire him:

His history with both Carroll and the Raiders made this a slam-dunk hire for all involved.

The Raiders coaching search is heating up and one name that has emerged as a potential candidate is current Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll. If Carroll were to join the Raiders, one person who could potentially join his coaching staff is Matt Capurro.

Matt Capurro has been an assistant coach with the Seahawks since 2010, working closely with Carroll on the defensive side of the ball. Capurro has a strong background in coaching, having previously served as a defensive coordinator at the college level before joining the Seahawks.

Capurro is known for his ability to develop young players and his attention to detail on the defensive side of the ball. He has a strong understanding of Carroll’s defensive philosophy and would be a valuable asset to the Raiders coaching staff.

While nothing has been confirmed yet, the potential pairing of Pete Carroll and Matt Capurro in Oakland is certainly an intriguing one to keep an eye on as the Raiders continue their coaching search. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Bold & Beautiful, Days of Our Lives Alum Matt Borlenghi’s New Role

It’s been quite some time since Matt Borlenghi played drug dealer Ziggy Deadmarsh on The Bold and the Beautiful. That was in 2002, in and around being in several other TV shows and films over the years. His soap journey landed him in Salem in 2008 to play Mayor Anthony Marino on Days of Our Lives, and he was a fan favorite as Brian Bodine on All My Children. Among his numerous credits are A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child (1989), Castle, and appearing as Lyle The Pawnshop Guy on Cobra Kai. Now, he’s got a fun new part in a Lifetime movie.

    He Reined Things in

Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam was a popular 1980s band that had several hits including I Wonder if I Take You Home, and Head to Toe. Lifetime has created a biopic about the band, called Can You Feel The Beat: The Lisa Lisa Story, which is part of their series on visionary women called Voices of a Lifetime. Soap Opera Digest caught up with Borlenghi who was given the part of record producer Barry Conner in the film. (Find out about DAYS’ current mayor, Paulina.)

Borlenghi was given free rein to change things like dialogue as he saw fit. He explained that his character is based on a real-life record producer who worked with Lisa Velez aka Lisa Lisa, explaining, “They changed the name of the guy, who died several years ago, and so out of respect for his family and memory and all that, I didn’t want to be a total piece of s–.” Meaning, that he played the character as a manipulator but reined it in out of respect for the producer’s surviving family.

READ THIS: Take a look at what’s coming up next on B&B.

The Band Had a Tough Path

“It was really cool to work with the real Lisa, and with Jearnest [Corchado], who plays Lisa in the film,” Borlenghi said, adding Lisa and her best friend Toni watched the production and had to relive many of the trials and tribulations they went through back in the day. This included the band immersed in a world of drugs, violence, personal troubles, and more, which Borlenghi remarked was, “Really powerful.”

“I am really curious to see how this film comes out and if it ends up playing as powerfully as I imagine it will,” he stated. He had shown his wife the trailer, noting that she wasn’t necessarily a fan of everything he’s done, but really wants to see this new film. In adding some redeeming qualities to his character, he hoped the family of the real life producer he portrayed would think, “‘Okay, he didn’t totally wreck Dad,’ or, ‘He didn’t totally wreck his memory.’”

Can You Feel The Beat: The Lisa Lisa Story premieres on Saturday, February 1 at 8 p.m./ET on Lifetime. (Learn about B&B’s Sean Kanan’s return to Cobra Kai.)

  • Trump-endorsed candidates win primary races to replace Matt Gaetz and Mike Waltz

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump -endorsed candidates Jimmy Patronis and Randy Fine won their Republican primaries in the special elections to replace former Florida Reps. Matt Gaetz and Mike Waltz, notching wins in reliably conservative districts.

Republicans are expected to hold the seats following the general election April 1, which would boost their thin majority in the U.S. House as they pursue Trump’s agenda.

In the 1st District election to replace Gaetz, Patronis fended off a challenge from former state Rep. Joel Rudman, a doctor who gained political prominence for opposing mask mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic. Patronis will advance to the general election to face Gay Valimont, who ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination in the race for the northwest Florida seat.

Patronis, who grew up in Panama City, has been a familiar face in Florida politics for decades and previously served in the state House of Representatives. His family is well-known in the area for founding a local seafood restaurant.

The 1st District seat opened up when Gaetz announced he wouldn’t be returning to Congress, after he bowed out of consideration to be Trump’s attorney general amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

Fine fought off challenges from two other Republicans in the 6th Congressional District race for Waltz’s seat. The district includes Daytona Beach and communities south of Jacksonville.

Fine is known for his support of Israel and his efforts to restrict LGBTQ+ rights. He had been a key ally of Gov. Ron DeSantis before breaking with him over Fine’s accusations the governor wasn’t doing enough to combat antisemitism.

“This victory isn’t mine. It is Donald Trump’s,” Fine said Tuesday night from a special session on immigration in Tallahassee. “It is first electoral win since Nov. 5. And Republicans overwhelmingly showed they remain committed to his agenda. And I can promise him — and every voter — no one will be more committed to his success than me. I’m ready to go.”

State representatives who were debating the proposed immigration bill broke out in applause when Fine entered the chamber on Tuesday night.

Fine will advance to the general election to face Democrat Josh Weil, a public school teacher from Orlando. The 6th District seat opened up after Trump tapped Waltz to be his national security adviser.

Both Fine and Patronis have faced criticism for not living in the districts they want to represent.

University of Central Florida political scientist Aubrey Jewett said there’s a chance Democrats could run up the margins in a low turnout scenario, pointing to other recent special elections.

“Democrats might be able to take Waltz’s seat, but it would take a small miracle,” Jewett said. “I think for the Gaetz seat, that would be more than a small miracle. It would be like a very large miracle to take that one.”

In a surprising turn of events, two Trump-endorsed candidates have emerged victorious in primary races to replace embattled Republican Reps. Matt Gaetz and Mike Waltz.

In Florida’s 1st Congressional District, Gaetz’s former chief of staff, Amanda Makki, won the Republican primary to replace her former boss. Makki had received a last-minute endorsement from former President Donald Trump, who praised her as a “fighter” and a “patriot.” Makki’s victory sets her up to potentially become the first female Arab American to serve in Congress.

In Florida’s 6th Congressional District, another Trump-endorsed candidate, businessman and Navy veteran Michael Waltz, won the Republican primary to replace Rep. Mike Waltz. Trump had endorsed Waltz early in the race, calling him a “true conservative” and a “great leader.” Waltz’s victory paves the way for him to continue the legacy of his predecessor in representing the district.

Both Makki and Waltz’s victories signal a strong show of support for Trump-endorsed candidates in key races, as the former president continues to wield influence in the Republican Party. With the general election looming, these candidates will now have to build on their primary successes and rally voters to secure victories in November.

  • Nick Sorensen impact, Matt Eberflus returns to high praise from Cowboys’ veteran

FRISCO, Texas — The dominoes are beginning to fall quickly following the announcement of Brian Schottenheimer as the tenth head coach in the history of the Dallas Cowboys, as the offensive coordinator turned lead man looks to begin building his regime in a way that hopefully, and swiftly, returns the team to the top of the mountain.

And he’s betting on Nick Sorensen and Matt Eberflus as two keys to potentially achieving that mission as early as 2025. Eberflus is no stranger at all to the organization, its fans or some players who were present during his first stint and who are still in the building.

“[He runs] a vision defense that’s going to run to the ball and tackle,” said veteran cornerback Jourdan Lewis, having learned and developed under Eberflus in 2017. “The front four are going to attack! I [love the reunion].”

A comment like this makes you wonder the impact the move will have on the mind of a player like Lewis — a Pro Bowl caliber cornerback preparing to make a decision in free agency.

And as a related aside, Eberflus’ reunion with the Cowboys also reunites him with Malik Hooker, the two having spent multiple seasons together for the Indianapolis Colts.

The linebackers coach from 2011 through 2017, Eberflus was so talented in his ability to develop players and to scheme that he was eventually named defensive passing game coordinator as well, prior to departing to become defensive coordinator in Indy. .

His return to Dallas should be met with a round of applause, and provides an instant counterweight to Schottenheimer’s inexperience as a head coach — a major reason the latter chose to add the former, seeing as Eberflus is now also a former head coach.

Expect stellar development from the linebackers, a unit that now boasts young talent like DeMarvion Overshown and Marist Liufau, and the potential unleashing of Micah Parsons in, well, all the ways that terrorize an opposing quarterback.

Sorensen is the former defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers, joining a Dallas team he’s often schemed against recently — named special teams coordinator for the Cowboys in 2025. He served in that role previously for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2021) before joining the 49ers one year later, also a former safety who often took the field on special teams.

He was the overseer of the Jaguars’ special teams group that helped former All-Pro returner rack up 525 return yards on 22 returns, adding a record-setting 102-yard touchdown return to that season’s bottom line — his time in Jacksonville (and with the Seattle Seahawks) overlapping with that of Schottenheimer’s, and the two formed a longstanding relationship in the process.

It also doesn’t hurt that Sorensen will be able, and more than willing, to share all of the inner workings of the 49ers, a team that’s been the most challenging opponent for the Cowboys over the past several seasons.

Do not discount that type of intel, seeing as it’s insanely priceless.

The recent departure of Al Harris, Robert Prince and John “Bones” Fassel highlight the need for not only expediency in forming the staff, but also in getting the right people to fill the roles — Fassel having also taken assistant special teams coordinator Rayna Stewart with him to the Tennessee Titans.

This means Sorensen will need to identify his assistant coordinator, news that is likely to arrive in short order.

Replacing Fassel will be a tall task, objectively speaking, seeing as his contributions to the Cowboys go beyond simply making their special teams unit one of the best in the NFL after several years of, prior to his arrival, it being a complete afterthought in both the return game and at placekicker; and it was Fassel who scouted and convinced the Cowboys to give KaVontae Turpin and Brandon Aubrey a shot, both having become All-Pros and Pro Bowlers.

The hire of Sorensen ties into the addition of/reunion with Eberflus to begin rounding out the most important coaching roles below Schottenheimer.

Nick Sorensen has quickly made a significant impact on the Dallas Cowboys since joining the team as their special teams coordinator. His attention to detail and innovative strategies have helped elevate the Cowboys’ special teams unit to new heights.

Additionally, defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus has recently returned to the Cowboys after a successful stint with the Indianapolis Colts. His return has been met with high praise from veteran players, who have lauded his leadership and defensive expertise.

Overall, both Sorensen and Eberflus have had a positive impact on the Cowboys and their respective units. Fans can expect to see continued success on special teams and defense thanks to their contributions.
