Dave Matthews cancels FireAid concert appearance due to critical family illness
Dave Matthews is no longer slated to perform at FireAid, the star-studded benefit concert raising funds for Los Angeles area wildfire relief.
“Due to a critical illness in the family, Dave Matthews is unfortunately unable to perform at the FireAid and MusiCares benefits this week,” read an official statement shared to the singer’s Instagram page. Matthews shares three kids with Jennifer Ashley Harper, his wife of 25 years.
The Dave Matthews Band frontman was originally set to take the Kia Forum stage with John Mayer on Jan. 30. However, the show must go on, and the remaining lineup includes such acts as Alanis Morissette, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Lady Gaga, Jelly Roll, Anderson .Paak, Stevie Nicks, Katy Perry, Sting, Tate McRae, Green Day, No Doubt, Pink, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Earth, Wind & Fire.
Mayer has since confirmed his intention to perform without Matthews, resharing the social media statement with the note, “Sending all my love to Dave, who will be there in spirit with me at FireAid.”

Proceeds raised by the FireAid benefit concert will help those affected by the wildfires by “rebuilding communities devastated by wildfires and supporting efforts to prevent future fire disasters throughout Southern California.”
The 58-year-old singer-songwriter was also scheduled to perform at another charity event on Friday, but his appearance at MusiCares’ 2025 Persons of the Year benefit gala has also been canceled.
As part of Grammys Week in L.A., the event will focus on raising critical funds to support music professionals in need, including those impacted by the L.A. wildfires.
The gala, honoring the Grateful Dead, boasts its own star-studded lineup including Mayer, Mick Fleetwood with Stewart Copeland, Norah Jones, Maren Morris, Noah Kahan, Vampire Weekend, Sierra Ferrell and Lukas Nelson, the War and Treaty, Zac Brown, Maggie Rose, Wynonna Judd, and the War on Drugs.
Tickets for FireAid are now available through Ticketmaster, and the event will also be available to stream across several platforms. You can donate to the cause at fireaidla.org.
It is with a heavy heart that we must announce the cancellation of Dave Matthews’ appearance at the upcoming FireAid concert. The beloved musician has had to withdraw from the event due to a critical family illness that requires his immediate attention. We ask for understanding and support during this difficult time for Dave and his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate this challenging situation.
We are working tirelessly to secure a replacement for Dave Matthews at the FireAid concert, and will provide updates as soon as possible. In the meantime, we thank you for your understanding and continued support of this important cause.
Thank you for your understanding.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dave Matthews will no longer perform at FireAid, a star-studded benefit concert organized for Los Angeles-area wildfire relief, or the MusiCares Person of the Year benefit gala this week.
According to a post shared to the official Dave Matthews Band Instagram account, “due to a critical illness in the family,” Matthews is no longer able to perform at either event.
A representative for the band told The Associated Press there will be no further comment.
At FireAid, Matthews was scheduled to perform at the Kia Forum alongside John Mayer for the first time.
All proceeds from FireAid will benefit those affected by the fires. A 501(c)(3) was set up, and contributions to FireAid will be distributed under the Annenberg Foundation, which with FireAid has assembled a small committee to advise.
On Friday, Matthews was slated to perform at MusiCares’ 2025 Persons of the Year benefit gala honoring the Grateful Dead.
MusiCares is an organization that helps music professionals who need financial, personal or medical assistance.
Earlier in the month, the Recording Academy — the people behind the Grammys — and its affiliated MusiCares launched the Los Angeles Fire Relief Effort with a $1 million dollar donation. According to a letter sent to members on Jan. 13, thanks to additional contributions, they’ve already distributed $2 million in emergency aid. Currently, they’ve raised and pledged more than $4 million in emergency aid to those in the music industry affected by the wildfires.
It is with a heavy heart that we must announce that Dave Matthews will not be able to perform at FireAid or any MusiCares benefit events in the near future. Due to a critical family illness, Dave is unable to commit to any additional performances at this time.We ask for understanding and support during this difficult time for Dave and his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate through this challenging situation.
Please continue to show your support for FireAid and MusiCares, as these organizations work tirelessly to provide aid and assistance to those in need within the music community.
Thank you for your understanding.

BASSETERRE, St Kitts (CMC):
DEANDRA DOTTIN bludgeoned Bangladesh Women’s bowlers to all parts of the ground in a superb display of power hitting, and together with captain Hayley Matthews propelled West Indies Women to a commanding eight-wicket victory in the first T20I at Warner Park on Monday.
Dottin smashed seven sixes in an unbeaten knock of 51 from 22 balls, while Matthews finished unbeaten on 60 from 54 balls, as the home side easily overhauled Bangladesh Women’s total of 144 for three from their 20 overs, ending on 145 for two off 16.5 overs.
West Indies Women were given a solid start with openers Matthew and Qiana Joseph putting on 63 runs for the first wicket.
Fahima Khatun got the breakthrough when she had Joseph caught at point after scoring 29 from 21 balls.
Shemaine Campbelle’s stay at the crease didn’t last long as she made just three before she became Khatun’s second victim to leave the Windies 73 for two in the 11th over.
The fireworks began with Dottin’s arrival, as she wasted little time in hitting Rabeya Khan for three huge sixes in the 13th over that went for 20 runs.
She followed up by slog sweeping Shorna Akter for another six in the next over before sending Khatun over the ropes in the 15th.
Dottin wasn’t done just yet, smashing Fariha Islam for two more sixes in the 16th over, the last of which brought up her half-century off 21 balls, while carrying West Indies within five runs of victory.
Matthews hit the winning run in the ensuing over, chipping Sultana Khatun down to deep midwicket for an easy single.
The skipper, whose 16th T20I half-century was overshadowed by Dottin, hit seven boundaries during her innings.
Earlier, Bangladesh Women did well to get up to their eventual total by picking up 52 runs in the last five overs after being limited by disciplined bowling by the home side early on.
They were led by an unbeaten half-century from their captain Nigar Sultana Joty, who stroked 53 from 40 balls with five fours and two sixes.
There were also useful contributions from Sharmin Akter who made 37 from 41 balls and Sobhana Mostary who scored 22 from 21.
In a thrilling match, West Indies Women’s cricket team emerged victorious against Bangladesh as Deandra Dottin and Hayley Matthews powered their team to victory. Dottin’s explosive batting and Matthews’ consistent performance led the West Indies to a dominant win.Dottin’s aggressive batting style and powerful strokes proved to be too much for the Bangladesh bowlers to handle. She scored a quickfire half-century and set the tone for the West Indies innings. Matthews, on the other hand, anchored the innings with her solid batting and ensured that her team reached a competitive total.
The West Indies bowlers also played a crucial role in the victory, restricting the Bangladesh batters and picking up important wickets at regular intervals. The team’s all-round performance was commendable and showcased their strength and skill in all aspects of the game.
The win against Bangladesh will surely boost the confidence of the West Indies Women’s team as they continue their campaign in the tournament. With players like Dottin and Matthews in top form, the team looks set to make a mark in the upcoming matches.
Overall, it was a fantastic display of skill and determination by the West Indies Women’s team, and they will be looking to carry this momentum forward in the rest of the tournament. Congratulations to them on a well-deserved victory!

‘Winning 3-0 will be great’: Windies captain Matthews eyes improvements, sweep ODI series against Bangladesh
West Indies Women’s captain Hayley Matthews is optimistic about her team’s readiness, as she stressed that the focus is on improvement and a desire to deliver a dominant 3-0 sweep in their three-match ODI series against Bangladesh.
Matthews pointed out that the series, which gets under way on Sunday at Warner Park, St. Kitts, represents a fresh start following a disappointing outing in India.
In fact, both teams are aiming to sharpen their skills for upcoming ICC events, as this series marks Bangladesh’s first bilateral tour of the Caribbean and the first bilateral encounter between the two sides.
It is with that in mind that Matthews highlighted the importance of spending time in the middle when batting, which she says has been a major focus during the team’s preparation.
“Preparation has been pretty good. Obviously, we had some time off over the New Year’s break to kind of reset after the India series. Everyone has been working pretty hard to get going. Batting has been something that we have been paying a lot of attention to and something that we know is going to be really crucial within this series,” Matthews said in a pre-game interview.
“We have been working hard in the bowling department as well. Obviously, wicket-taking opportunities and wicket-taking balls—that is something from the last series that we felt we could have improved on, so the coaches and everyone involved have definitely been putting in a lot more plans to hopefully get some more early wickets,” she added.
Knowing very well that facing Bangladesh’s formidable spin attack will be a key challenge for her side, Matthews believes the key to success lies in early aggression.
“They have a very strong spin attack, so it’s probably going to be about staying on them really early and keeping them out of the game as much as possible. Their spinners are going to be the ones to try and take wickets, so hopefully we can keep them out of the game as much as possible,” she noted.
Matthews explained that the Caribbean side, which boasts a blend of seasoned campaigners and emerging talent, has struck a harmonious balance with every player eager to give a good account.
“We already have a really good mix. Having that experience and youthfulness kind of brings about that fun in the camp, but we’re still very serious about what we have to get done out on the field. No matter who you are in the team—a young player coming in or someone that’s been around for a while—everyone is hungry to go out there and do well every single time,” Matthews declared.
While playing at home in familiar conditions provides a significant edge, Matthews is cognisant that efficient execution is required to exploit conditions, as she is clear about their ambitions.
“We’ve had a lot of experience playing here at Warner Park. The girls certainly know the ground very well, and it should be an advantage for us. Hopefully, we can use that to exploit areas of the ground and the wicket as well,” Matthews said.
“As the higher-ranked team, we do want to go out there and dominate. It (series) still plays a role in the position that we will be in the qualifiers, and so we want to focus a lot on what we can do. We know we are a quality side, and hopefully
we will be able to showcase that, as winning 3-0 will be great,” she reasoned.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty is equally determined, as she also views the series as crucial for their World Cup qualification hopes.
“This is a very important series, and we really want to win to qualify for the ODI World Cup, so we have some plans that we want to execute on the day. We have a very good bowling attack and some very good top-order players, so we look forward to seeing how they perform,” Joty stated.
After a dominant performance in the first two ODI matches against Bangladesh, Windies captain Matthews is setting her sights on a series sweep with a 3-0 victory. In a recent interview, Matthews expressed her confidence in the team’s ability to continue their winning streak and improve upon their performances in the upcoming match. She highlighted the importance of maintaining their momentum and staying focused on executing their game plan.
“We have been playing some good cricket in the first two matches and I believe we can build upon that to secure a clean sweep against Bangladesh. Winning 3-0 will be great for us and will show the progress we have made as a team,” Matthews said.
She also emphasized the need for the team to continue working on their strengths and addressing any areas of improvement. “There is always room for growth and we will be looking to make some adjustments to ensure we are at our best in the final match,” Matthews added.
With the team’s confidence high and their eyes set on a series sweep, Windies fans can expect an exciting and competitive match as they look to secure victory in the third ODI.
