Boston in town for Matthews first game back

Boston Bruins @ Toronto Maple Leafs
    07:00 PM at Scotiabank Arena
    Watch on: SN, CBC, NESN

The Leafs last game was away on January 2 against the New York Islanders, which Toronto won by a score of 2-1 in regulation. The Leafs have a record of 24-13-2 for a 0.641 Points %.

The Boston Bruins last played away on January 2 against the New York Rangers. The Bruins lost by a score of 2-1 in regulation, and their current league record is 20-16-4 for a 0.550 Points %.

    Them

That record of theirs needs to be unpacked a little. Looking at the standing the incorrect way by points, and you see the Bruins in third place in the Atlantic. By Points %, they are fourth. If the playoffs were held today they be in because anyone outside the top three in the Metro is hopeless. But they are on very thin ice in that spot and if the Senators got their act together, they’d have that place very quickly. And the Bruins would still be in the playoffs. Someone else, possibly Columbus or the Rangers would need to have a better second half of the season.

But the Bruins have the percentage they have now because they’ve been lucky in overtime and have been in overtime a lot. Sounds like the Leafs last year, only they were innovators and doing it with loser points.

The Bruins have been in OT 10 times. They’ve won six of them, and that is how a team with an average xG% and no value adds anywhere can be where they are instead of other weak teams like Montréal or Columbus or the Penguins.

    The Game

The thing to watch with the Bruins is that Expected Goal rate on the power play is very good, and Swayman has been a good goalie. If their really horrible Shooting % and bad Save % are good for one game, they’re a hard team to beat. Otherwise, they’re a team hard to keep out of overtime.

Exciting news for Boston fans as Matthews makes his highly anticipated return to the ice in tonight’s game against the Bruins. The city is buzzing with anticipation as they welcome back their star player after a brief absence due to injury. Stay tuned for updates and highlights from what is sure to be an electrifying game! #MatthewsIsBack #BostonStrong

  • Matthews to return from upper-body injury for Maple Leafs against Bruins

Matthews to return from upper-body injury for Maple Leafs against Bruins

The center and Maple Leafs captain missed six games after reaggravating the injury Dec. 20 that forced him to miss nine in November.

Matthews practiced Thursday for the second day in a row and traveled with the team for a 2-1 win at the New York Islanders. He skated in a noncontact jersey Wednesday but competed in drills.

He did not participate in a full morning skate prior to the 6-3 win against the Buffalo Sabres on Dec. 20 but scored and played 19:18. He took two hard hits in the game, one from Sabres forward Tage Thompson in the first period and a cross-check from defenseman Dennis Gilbert in the third period.

“A couple different things but I’d say that definitely (the hits) did not help the cause,” Matthews said. “Rest is helping. I’m not somebody who likes to stay still for long, so I’m just trying to do what I can maybe without overexerting certain things. Just trying to stay in as good shape as you can when you can’t skate.”

Matthews missed nine games in November because of an upper-body injury before returning Nov. 30, a 5-3 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning. During his recovery, he took a five-day trip to Germany to visit a doctor who both he and other Maple Leafs players have seen in the past for consultation. The injury was one he had been managing since missing time during the preseason.

Matthews said he is unsure if he will be able to put the issue entirely behind him at any point this season.

“Yeah, I don’t know,” Matthews said. “I hope so, that’s obviously the goal. It’s tricky with these things. It’s a physical sport, it’s a contact sport, so things happen out there sometimes that are out of your control, so just trying to manage it as best I can.”

Neither Matthews nor Toronto coach Craig Berube have offered any further specifics as to the nature of the previous injury, though the coach did indicate earlier it is not related to the wrist injury Matthews previously had surgery on during the 2021 offseason.

Matthews had 12 points (six goals, six assists) in 11 games after returning from the injury in November, helping Toronto to an 8-3-0 record during that span. He is fourth on the Maple Leafs with 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists) in 24 games this season.

He led the League with a career-high 69 goals last season and has scored at least 40 goals in each of the previous five seasons. Since entering the NHL in the 2016-17 season, Matthews leads the NHL with 379 goals.

Toronto (24-13-2) went 7-2-0 without Matthews in November and 3-3-0 during his most recent absence.

The Toronto Maple Leafs received some good news today as star forward Auston Matthews is set to return from an upper-body injury and suit up for their game against the Boston Bruins.

Matthews, who has been sidelined for the past few games, is a key player for the Maple Leafs and his return will provide a much-needed boost to the team. His scoring ability and playmaking skills will be crucial as the Maple Leafs look to secure a win against their division rivals.

Fans will no doubt be excited to see Matthews back in action and will be hoping that he can help lead the team to victory. With the playoffs just around the corner, having Matthews back in the lineup is a huge positive for the Maple Leafs as they look to make a deep run in the postseason.

Stay tuned for what is sure to be an exciting game as Matthews makes his return and the Maple Leafs take on the Bruins in a crucial matchup. Let’s go Leafs! #LeafsForever #MatthewsIsBack

  • Maple Leafs place Matthews on IR; Ekman-Larsson, Holmberg out Tuesday

Maple Leafs place Matthews on IR; Ekman-Larsson, Holmberg out Tuesday

A team spokesman said Matthews, who’s out with an upper-body injury, has not experienced any setbacks. The move was retroactive to Dec. 20, when Matthews last played against the Buffalo Sabres.

“He skated yesterday and had a good skate,” Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube said in a pre-game availability. “I was glad he was out there. It was good to see him out there with us in practice.

“Really, we’ll go from there and see how he is progressing tomorrow and see if he’s out there practising again.”

Matthews has 11 goals and 12 assists over 24 games this season.

The Maple Leafs recalled defenceman Marshall Rifai from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies. In addition, blueliner Oliver Ekman-Larsson and forward Pontus Homberg were unavailable for Tuesday’s game due to illness.

Entering play Tuesday, the Maple Leafs (22-13-2) had dropped three of their last four games without Matthews in the lineup.

Matthews won the Rocket Richard Trophy last season after scoring 69 goals. The first overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft has 672 points (379-293) in 586 career regular-season games.

The Maple Leafs will play the back end of the home-and-home set against the Islanders on Thursday night.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced that star forward Auston Matthews has been placed on injured reserve due to an upper-body injury. This news comes as a blow to the team, as Matthews has been leading the Leafs in scoring this season.

In addition, defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson and forward Pontus Holmberg will also be out of the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens. Ekman-Larsson is dealing with a lower-body injury, while Holmberg is out with an upper-body injury.

The Maple Leafs will have to rely on their depth to fill the void left by Matthews, Ekman-Larsson, and Holmberg as they look to secure a win in their upcoming matchup. Fans will be eager to see how the team responds to these key absences and if they can continue their winning ways without some of their top players in the lineup.

  • Auston Matthews returns to Maple Leafs practice, out vs. Islanders

Auston Matthews returns to Maple Leafs practice, out vs. Islanders

Auston Matthews took part in Toronto Maple Leafs practice for the first time since a Dec. 20 injury but won’t play Tuesday at home against the New York Islanders.

Coach Craig Berube was pleased with Matthews’ participation on Monday but said his captain will miss a fifth consecutive game. According to reports, Matthews skated for 30 minutes but didn’t take part in power-play drills.

“He did a good job in practice today, I thought, and I think he feels pretty good,” Berube said. “So, we’ll go from there.”

The Maple Leafs visit the Islanders on Thursday.

Matthews has an undisclosed injury that has hampered him since training camp, and he aggravated it 10 days ago in a 6-3 win against the Buffalo Sabres.

Matthews, 27, missed nine games in November because of the injury.

In 24 games this season, Matthews has 11 goals and 12 assists. Last season, he scored 69 goals in 81 games to lead the NHL.

The Maple Leafs are tied with the Florida Panthers atop the Atlantic Division with 46 points.

Auston Matthews, the star center for the Toronto Maple Leafs, made his return to practice after missing several games due to injury. However, despite his return to the ice, Matthews will not be suiting up for the upcoming game against the New York Islanders.

Matthews, who leads the Maple Leafs in goals and points this season, has been dealing with a nagging injury that has kept him out of action for the past few weeks. While his return to practice is a positive sign, the team is taking a cautious approach and will not rush him back into game action.

The Maple Leafs will certainly miss Matthews’ offensive firepower against the Islanders, but the team is focused on his long-term health and ensuring he is fully recovered before he returns to the lineup. In the meantime, the rest of the team will need to step up and fill the void left by Matthews’ absence.

Fans will be eagerly awaiting Matthews’ return to game action, but for now, they will have to wait a little longer to see their star player back on the ice.

  • Matthews misses 5th straight game for Maple Leafs with upper-body injury

Matthews misses 5th straight game for Maple Leafs with upper-body injury

TORONTO — Auston Matthews practiced Monday but missed his fifth straight game when the Toronto Maple Leafs hosted the New York Islanders at Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday.

It was the center’s first time practicing since reaggravating an upper-body injury Dec. 20 during a 6-3 win at the Buffalo Sabres. However, he was placed on injured reserve, retroactive to that date on Tuesday.

“It was good to see Auston out there skating with us, so that was a good sign,” Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube said Monday. “I think everybody was excited about him being out there too. Tomorrow he will not play, but he did a good job in practice today, I thought. I think he feels pretty good, so we will just go from there. That’s all I’ve got for you on that.”

Matthews rotated on line rushes as an extra forward and did not take part in power-play drills. He left about 30 minutes into the 45-minute practice.

John Tavares centered a line with left wing Max Pacioretty and right wing Mitch Marner, and David Kampf was between left wing Matthew Knies and right wing William Nylander. Matthews subbed in for Pacioretty on a few rushes during practice.

After Tuesday, the Maple Leafs will face the Islanders at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, on Thursday before back-to-back home games against the Boston Bruins on Saturday and the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday.

Matthews, who is Maple Leafs captain, did not participate in a full morning skate prior to the game against the Sabres on Dec. 20 but scored and played 19:18. He took two hard hits in the game, one from Sabres forward Tage Thompson in the first period and a cross-check from defenseman Dennis Gilbert in the third period, though he finished the game.

He missed nine games last month because of an upper-body injury and returned Nov. 30, a 5-3 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning. During his recovery, he took a five-day trip to Germany to visit a doctor who both he and teammates have seen in the past for consultation. The injury was one he had been managing since missing time during the preseason.

Toronto went 7-2-0 without Matthews in November.

As for whether the injury he sustained against Buffalo is related to the previous injury or is an isolated issue, Berube previously said, “probably a little of both.”

Neither Matthews nor Berube have offered any further specifics as to the nature of the previous injury, though the coach did indicate earlier it is not related to a wrist injury Matthews previously had surgery on during the 2021 offseason.

Matthews had 12 points (six goals, six assists) in 11 games since returning from the injury, helping Toronto to an 8-3-0 record during that span. He is fourth on the Maple Leafs with 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists) in 24 games this season.

Toronto is 1-3-0 since Matthews left the lineup again, including a 5-2 loss to the Washington Capitals on Saturday, and 43-23-2 all-time without him.

He led the League with a career-high 69 goals last season and has scored at least 40 in each of the previous five seasons. Since entering the NHL in the 2016-17 season, Matthews leads the NHL with 379 goals, 27 more than Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers, who is second.

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ star center, Auston Matthews, has now missed his 5th consecutive game due to an upper-body injury. The team has been feeling the absence of their leading goal scorer as they continue to struggle without him in the lineup.

Matthews’ presence on the ice is undeniable, as he brings skill, speed, and scoring ability to the team. His absence has been felt in the offensive zone, as the Maple Leafs have been struggling to find the back of the net without him.

Fans are eagerly awaiting his return to the lineup, as they hope that his injury is not serious and that he will be back on the ice soon. In the meantime, the team will have to find a way to overcome his absence and continue to push for victories in his absence.

We wish Matthews a speedy recovery and hope to see him back in action soon, leading the Maple Leafs to victory once again.

Mike Matthews: Tennessee WR plans to enter transfer portal

Tennessee wide receiver Mike Matthews has announced his plans to enter the transfer portal, adding another dynamic player to the pool of potential transfers this offseason. Matthews, a talented pass-catcher with speed and athleticism, will undoubtedly draw interest from several programs looking to add a playmaker to their receiving corps. Stay tuned for updates on where Matthews will land next as he looks to make an impact at his new school.

Tennessee WR, former 5-star Mike Matthews to enter transfer portal

Mike Matthews, once Tennessee‘s prize recruit in the 2024 signing class, will play elsewhere next season.

The freshman wide receiver is the latest Vols player to enter the transfer portal since the season ended in a loss to Ohio State in the College Football Playoff last week, making the decision within in the final hour of portal, which is slated to close at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday.

TALK ABOUT IT IN THE ROCKY TOP FORUM

This was first reported by On3.

The 6-foot-2, 197-pound Matthews was Tennessee’s lone five-star signee in its previous recruiting cycle, picking the Vols over several high-profile suitors after a standout prep career at Parkview High School in Georgia.

Tennessee coaches raved about Matthews after he arrived on campus as an early enrollee last December and into fall camp. He made his college debut in the Vols’ 71-0 win over Kent State on Sept. 14, totaling two catches for 35 yards and a his first career touchdown.

Matthews’ role in the offense was limited for much of the season, but his contributions picked up late in the year. He has three receptions for 30 yards and another touchdown at Vanderbilt and factored into the rotation in the playoff game at Ohio State after a number of receivers entered the portal.

He accounted for seven receptions for 90 yards and two scores in 11 games.

Matthews was in position to start next season, but his departure leaves Tennessee with even more questions on offense after losing Squirrel White, Kaleb Webb, Chas Nimrod, Nathan Leacock and Nate Spillman to transfer and veteran Bru McCoy, who is out of eligibility.

The Vols have had 13 scholarship players enter the portal since it opened earlier this month.

Tennessee WR, former 5-star recruit Mike Matthews to enter transfer portal

Tennessee wide receiver Mike Matthews, a former 5-star recruit, has announced his decision to enter the transfer portal. The talented pass-catcher had high expectations when he arrived at Tennessee, but has struggled to find consistent playing time in recent seasons.

Matthews, a highly touted prospect coming out of high school, was expected to be a key contributor to the Volunteers’ offense. However, injuries and a crowded receiving corps have limited his opportunities on the field.

Despite his limited playing time, Matthews has shown flashes of his potential and has the talent to make an impact at the next level. With his decision to enter the transfer portal, he will have the opportunity to explore other options and find a program where he can showcase his skills and contribute to a team’s success.

As Matthews looks for a new home, there will likely be no shortage of suitors eager to add his playmaking ability to their roster. It will be interesting to see where he lands and how he performs in his new environment. Stay tuned for updates on Matthews’ transfer journey.

  • 2024-25 NHL injury tracker: Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin returns vs. Maple Leafs, Auston Matthews remains out

2024-25 NHL injury tracker: Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin returns vs. Maple Leafs, Auston Matthews remains out

The 2024-25 NHL season continues to move along. With the season in full swing, a few star players are dealing with significant injuries.

One of the players no longer on that list includes Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin, who missed 16 games with a broken fibula. On Saturday, Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said Ovechkin will return to the lineup against the Toronto Maple Leafs, marking his first game since Nov. 18.

Prior to his injury, Ovechkin was red hot and on track to break Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record by the end of the season. Ovechkin now needs 27 goals in Washington’s final 48 games, which would be an 82-game pace of 46 goals. The good news for fans hoping to see him pass “The Great One” is that he’s hit that mark 11 times throughout his career.

While Ovechkin will be making his return against Toronto, Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews remains out with an upper-body injury that has bothered him all season. Matthews missed almost the entire month of November but was able to return on Nov. 30. He re-aggravated the injury in a game against the Buffalo Sabres on Dec. 20, and he hasn’t played since.

The injury has limited Matthews to 11 goals and 12 assists in 24 games, but the Maple Leafs have still managed to take over first place in the Atlantic Division.

The Capitals’ star forward Alex Ovechkin made his long-awaited return to the lineup in a game against the Maple Leafs. Ovechkin, who had been sidelined with a lower-body injury for the past few weeks, wasted no time making an impact, scoring a goal in his first game back on the ice. His presence was sorely missed by the Capitals, and his return is a welcome sight for fans and teammates alike.

On the other side of the ice, the Maple Leafs are still without their own superstar forward, Auston Matthews. Matthews has been dealing with an upper-body injury that has kept him out of the lineup for several games now.
