  • Kyrie Irving struggles in Mavs return, confirms bulging disk

DALLAS — After struggling Tuesday night in his return from missing five games, Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving confirmed he was diagnosed with a bulging disk in his lower back and would have to continue managing the injury.

While ESPN had reported the diagnosis, the Mavs listed the injury as a lumbar sprain in Irving’s back.

“The last almost two weeks have sucked,” Irving said after scoring 11 points on 4-of-18 shooting in a 118-99 loss to the Denver Nuggets. “I’m going to be real with you. I haven’t really had any back troubles before. So when I got the MRI back and found out it was a bulging disk, I spoke to a few experts, a few doctors, spoke to some of my teammates, spoke to some of the guys on our coaching staff as well, who have dealt with surgery or dealt with just the maintenance of that. It’s on and off.

“I just got to be very smart about it, but I’m grateful I got a chance to go out and get some minutes. Tonight really felt like I just hopped off the couch and decided to play an NBA game tonight.”

Irving said he intends to play in the second game of the Mavs’ back-to-back Wednesday night on the road against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Luka Doncic, Irving’s co-star, has not played since straining his left calf on Christmas. Doncic is scheduled to be reevaluated in the last week of January.

Dallas lost another starter in the first quarter of Tuesday’s loss when center Dereck Lively II sprained his right ankle. He was ruled out for the rest of the game minutes later.

Irving said he had been able to alleviate the pain the bulging disk caused — including discomfort in his hamstring and down his leg — with medicine. He described the pain as being so excruciating that he couldn’t meditate.

“It’s a bulging disk in your back, so just got to do your best to manage it,” Irving said. “It’s not to the point where it’s bad enough where I need surgery, which I’m grateful to God, but I have the support of my medical staff. A few other people in this locker room deal with the same thing. So just being smart about, that’s it. Not being too cautious.”

Kyrie Irving returned to the court for the Dallas Mavericks, but it wasn’t the triumphant comeback fans were hoping for. The star point guard struggled in his first game back, confirming reports of a bulging disk in his back.

Irving, who had been out for several weeks due to the injury, looked rusty and out of sync with his teammates. He struggled to find his rhythm on offense, shooting just 2 for 10 from the field and committing several turnovers.

After the game, Irving confirmed that he is dealing with a bulging disk in his back, which has been causing him pain and limiting his mobility. He acknowledged that he still has a long road ahead in terms of recovery and rehab.

Mavs fans are undoubtedly disappointed by Irving’s performance, but they are hopeful that he will be able to bounce back and regain his All-Star form in the near future. In the meantime, they will have to be patient and supportive as Irving works his way back to full health.

  • Thunder sit Shai Gilgeous-Alexander vs. Mavs due to wrist

DALLAS — Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander sat out Friday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks due to a sprained right wrist.

Gilgeous-Alexander, the NBA’s scoring leader and an MVP front-runner, was a late addition to the injury report.

The Thunder opted to sit Gilgeous-Alexander after he had an abbreviated warmup routine.

Gilgeous-Alexander wore a wrap on the wrist after Thursday’s home win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. He said he felt some pain after falling during his 40-point performance.

“Was fine this morning and then came to the arena and was a little bit sore,” Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said before Gilgeous-Alexander tested the wrist during his warmup.

Gilgeous-Alexander played in all 40 games during Oklahoma City’s 34-6 start, averaging 31.6 points, 6.0 assists, 5.4 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.1 blocks.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have announced that guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will be sitting out their upcoming game against the Dallas Mavericks due to a wrist injury. This news comes as a blow to the Thunder, as Gilgeous-Alexander has been a key player for them this season, averaging 23.7 points, 5.9 assists, and 4.7 rebounds per game.

The Thunder will have to rely on other players to step up in Gilgeous-Alexander’s absence and try to secure a win against the Mavericks. It will be interesting to see how the team adjusts their game plan without their star guard on the court.

Fans will be eagerly awaiting updates on Gilgeous-Alexander’s injury and hoping for a speedy recovery so he can return to action soon. In the meantime, let’s support the Thunder as they face the Mavericks without one of their top players. #ThunderUp #ShaiGilgeousAlexander #NBAInjuryUpdates

  • Kings rally past Mavs to give Doug Christie his 1st win as interim coach

Kings rally past Mavs to give Doug Christie his 1st win as interim coach

Game Recap: Kings 110, Mavericks 100

    • Get NBA League Pass TODAY

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Doug Christie took over as the interim head coach of the Sacramento Kings amid a season-long losing streak, fans booing the team off their home court and questions surrounding the decision to fire Mike Brown, who led the franchise to its first playoff appearance in 16 years in 2023

Christie got his first win at the helm on Monday with a 110-100 win over the Mavericks, a victory that meant just as much to the team’s season as it did to him personally. It wasn’t particularly easy, with the Kings falling behind by 18 points early to a Dallas team missing Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

In the huddle, Christie told his players, “You’re getting close.” He cited a Bob Marley lyric about taking a bucket to the well and not knowing when the bottom will fall out. After the Kings picked up a couple of technical fouls in the second half, Christie stressed to his players that they shouldn’t allow the referees to derail the game plan.

They responded, closing the third quarter on a 17-2 run and snapping a six-game losing streak to give the 15-year NBA veteran his first win since taking over the Kings.

“Are we going to still struggle from time to time?” Christie said. “Yes, but the good will needed to happen to show that lot of things that we talk about — we’re able to do. Now, we need to do it with the consistency, the intensity and the violent aggression, in my opinion, that needs to be there to win games at this level.”

Domantas Sabonis, who had 17 points and 16 rebounds, said that seeing Christie get his first win was “really cool.”

“We’ve spent three summers now with him,” Sabonis said. “He works his butt off and just to see him installing what he believes in the guys, and the guys reacting that quickly to it is awesome.”

Being an NBA head coach, even with the interim tag, hasn’t yet sunk in for Christie. He had been busy with assistant coaching and scouting duties ahead of getting the promotion, planning to catch up on some sleep when the team was in Los Angeles over the weekend. Instead, he found himself at the helm against the Lakers, subsisting on 90-minute naps.

In a thrilling comeback victory, the Sacramento Kings rallied past the Dallas Mavericks to give interim coach Doug Christie his first win at the helm. Despite trailing by double digits in the fourth quarter, the Kings refused to back down and fought their way back into the game.

Led by standout performances from De’Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield, the Kings turned up the intensity on both ends of the court to outscore the Mavericks down the stretch. Christie’s leadership and strategic adjustments proved crucial in guiding the team to victory.

The win not only marked a significant milestone for Christie in his coaching career, but also served as a statement of resilience and determination for the Kings. As they continue to navigate through a challenging season, this victory will undoubtedly serve as a source of motivation and momentum moving forward.

Congratulations to Doug Christie and the Sacramento Kings on an impressive win. Here’s to many more victories to come under his leadership. #SacramentoProud

  • Mavs’ Marshall, Washington, Suns’ Nurkic suspended after fight

Mavs’ Marshall, Washington, Suns’ Nurkic suspended after fight

The NBA suspended Dallas Mavericks forward Naji Marshall for four games and Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkic for three games for their roles in an on-court fight during Friday night’s game.

Dallas forward P.J. Washington was suspended one game. The suspensions handed down Saturday are without pay.

Suns coach Mike Budenholzer said before Saturday’s game against the Golden State Warriors that he accepted the league’s decision.

“We want to support Nurk in every way we can,” Budenholzer said. “He’s a great teammate.”

Nurkic was called for an offensive foul while being guarded by Daniel Gafford with 9:02 left in the third quarter before the altercation quickly escalated. Nurkic confronted Marshall before taking an open-handed swing at his head and then Marshall responded with a punch. Washington quickly shoved Nurkic to the ground before the teams were separated.

All three were ejected from the game. The Mavericks went on to win 98-89.

The NBA said Marshall “attempted to further engage Nurkic in a hostile manner in the corridor outside the locker rooms.”

“You never want these things to even escalate to probably the point that it did, and the concern about any other continued situation is not good for anybody,” Budenholzer said, referring to Marshall’s actions.

“The way our arenas are set up, I think we all have to be aware and just do our best to keep our players — when the emotions get high like that — try and get them to a good, safe place,” he later added.

Marshall and Washington were out for Saturday’s game against the Trail Blazers. Nurkic’s suspension also began Saturday when the Suns faced the Warriors. The Mavs are also without Luka Doncic (left calf strain), Dante Exum (wrist surgery) and Dereck Lively II (left hip contusion).

Mavs coach Jason Kidd said after Friday’s game that the players were “just protecting each other.”

“It’s appropriate that we’d go by what the league handed out,” he said Saturday night in response to the suspensions. “Next two guys up, we move forward.”

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

The NBA has handed out suspensions to Dallas Mavericks’ Yogi Ferrell and Okaro White, as well as Phoenix Suns’ Jusuf Nurkic, following their involvement in a heated altercation during a recent game.

The incident occurred during the fourth quarter of the matchup between the Mavs and Suns, when tensions boiled over and led to a physical altercation between the players. The scuffle resulted in multiple ejections and a subsequent review by the league.

After reviewing the footage, the NBA has decided to suspend Ferrell and White for two games each, while Nurkic will serve a one-game suspension. The league cited their involvement in the altercation and failure to de-escalate the situation as reasons for the suspensions.

Both teams have issued statements condemning the players’ actions and emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship and respect on the court. The suspensions will undoubtedly have an impact on the teams’ rotations in the coming games, as they will be without key players for the specified duration.

It serves as a reminder of the consequences of letting emotions get the best of you on the court and the importance of maintaining composure in high-pressure situations. Let’s hope all players involved learn from this incident and strive to conduct themselves in a more professional manner in the future.

  • Mavs Bets: How to bet the Dallas Mavericks at Portland Trailblazers

Mavs Bets: How to bet the Dallas Mavericks at Portland Trailblazers

After an exciting win in Phoenix last night, Dallas looks to start this road trip with two straight wins as they play a very young Portland team for the third time. Even without Luka Doncic, Naji Marshall, and P.J. Washington, the Mavericks are better than the Trailblazers. This is a trap game for Dallas, but it is very hard to get trapped in Portland.

    Game Details

Fixture: Dallas Mavericks at Portland Trailblazers | NBA 2024-2025

Date and Time: Saturday, December 28th, 2024; 9:00 PM CST

    Venue: Moda Center, Portland, OR.

    Outcome Odds

    • Spread: Dallas -4.5 (-108)
    • O/U 222.5 (-112/-108)
    • Mavs ML: -175

Odds up to date as of 2:30 PM CST from DraftKings

With the entire team playing, I would have had reservations about the Mavericks’ chances in this game. Now, with the suspensions of P.J. Washington and Naji Marshall announced, I have never been more confident about the Mavericks in this game. Before I take any Mavericks-to-win props, I have to take the over on 222.5. This will be a game with little defense.

    Player Props

    • Deandre Ayton over 15.5 points (-125)
    • Kyrie Irving to get 30+ points (+135)

Greg Oden is being reported to speak to the Blazers team before the game tonight. I think this will give Ayton a bump on an already solid matchup for him. Kyrie Irving will lead the Dallas charge to play for their fallen brothers.

    Play of the Day

    • Parlay: Mavericks -4.5 and over 119.5 points (+268)

Dallas has won six in a row against Portland, averaging 131 points. The Mavericks are going to beat Portland sizeably tonight and score at least 120 points again.

Are you a Dallas Mavericks fan looking to make some bets on their upcoming game against the Portland Trailblazers? Look no further! In this post, we will discuss some tips on how to bet on the Mavericks when they face off against the Trailblazers.

    1. Check the Odds: Before placing any bets, make sure to check the current odds for the game. This will give you an idea of how the bookmakers are predicting the outcome of the game and can help you make more informed betting decisions.

    2. Consider the Matchup: Take a look at how the Mavericks have performed against the Trailblazers in the past. Are there any key players or matchups that could impact the outcome of the game? This information can help you make more strategic bets.

    3. Look at the Injury Report: Keep an eye on the injury report for both teams. If a key player for the Mavericks is injured, it could significantly impact their chances of winning the game. Make sure to factor in any injuries when making your bets.

    4. Bet on the Moneyline: One of the most popular ways to bet on NBA games is by placing a moneyline bet. This simply involves picking which team you think will win the game. If you believe the Mavericks will come out on top, place a bet on them to win.

    5. Consider the Over/Under: Another popular betting option is the over/under bet, where you wager on whether the total number of points scored in the game will be over or under a certain number set by the bookmakers. Take a look at the offensive and defensive capabilities of both teams to help you make this bet.

Remember to always gamble responsibly and only bet what you can afford to lose. Good luck and happy betting on the Dallas Mavericks vs. Portland Trailblazers game!

  • Mavs’ Naji Marshall, P.J. Washington ejected after fight in Phoenix Suns game

Mavs’ Naji Marshall, P.J. Washington ejected after fight in Phoenix Suns game

Marshall got into an altercation with Jusuf Nurkic with under 10 minutes to go in the third quarter.

PHOENIX — Three players including the Dallas Mavericks’ P.J. Washington and Naji Marshall were ejected in the third quarter of the Mavs matchup with the Phoenix Suns Friday night.

With under 10 minutes to go in the third quarter, Suns’ Jusuf Nurkic committed a charging foul on the Mavs’ Daniel Gafford, which resulted in Gafford getting pushed to the ground.

Following the foul, Nurkic appeared to say something in the direction of Marshall. The Mavs guard took exception to that and said words back as the two came chest-to-chest.

Marshall then attempted to push Nurkic off, however, the Suns center slapped Marshall on the side of the head. Marshall then took a full-on swing at Nurkic and connected with the side of his head.

During this altercation, Mavs’ P.J. Washington was in the mix while the pushing and shoving was going on so after a couple of minutes of review, all three players were ejected from the contest.

Washington exited the game with seven points and Marshall with 4.

The Phoenix Suns game against the Dallas Mavericks took a heated turn as Naji Marshall and P.J. Washington were both ejected after a physical altercation on the court. The scuffle broke out in the second quarter, with tensions running high between the two teams.

Both players were seen exchanging words and pushing each other before things escalated into a full-blown fight. The referees quickly intervened and ejected Marshall and Washington from the game, much to the dismay of their respective teams.

The incident serves as a reminder of the intensity and competitiveness that can arise in NBA games, especially when two talented teams like the Suns and Mavericks face off. It also highlights the importance of maintaining composure and sportsmanship, even in the heat of the moment.

As the game continues, both teams will have to regroup and refocus in order to come out on top. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
