  • ‘Wolf Man’ and ‘September 5’ now available at home; Florence Pugh, Andrew Garfield romance ‘We Live in Time’ hits Max

After Universal tried and failed to usher in a new era of their classic monster movies, 2020’s The Invisible Man helped resurrect the concept with Leigh Whannell’s clever and thoroughly modern take on the story.

Not only was that movie a hit with both audiences and critics, but it also seemed to provide a much-needed template for Universal to update its beloved characters to reflect the times. It took five years, but the studio has finally made a proper follow-up in Wolf Man, and they brought back Whannell to try his hand again.

The response to Wolf Man was markedly different than that of The Invisible Man, regarding both box office and critical reception. But is it worth your time? It debuted on digital this week, 17 days after its theatrical release, so you can find out for yourself.

Wolf Man isn’t the only movie newly available on streaming this week — the critically acclaimed, ripped-from-the-headlines period journalism thriller September 5 is out now, and A24’s hit romance We Live in Time, starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, hits Max.

The Pharrell Williams Lego biopic Piece by Piece is out on Peacock, which could be appealing to kids and parents alike. For after the kids go to bed, Kill, a hyper-violent action-thriller from India that earned rave reviews, is available on Hulu.

Here’s what to know about the theatrical movies newly available to stream as of this week and where you can find them.

    Wolf Man

Wolf Man sets up a loaded metaphor in its terrific, tense opening sequence: A boy and his overbearing survivalist father hunting in the woods encounter some sort of animalistic creature. As the movie progresses, it becomes clear there’s not enough meat on the bone for the analogy they’re going for regarding parenthood, trauma, abuse and how we’re doomed to become our parents, no matter how hard we try to stray from the path.

It’s heavy stuff for a movie that could stand to have some fun, but there are still elements worthy of praise, including the practical makeup effects on the wolf transformation and the impactful, but all-too-brief moments of body horror. Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner are two great performers, but it’s hard to get a read on their characters.

Wolf Man is ambitious enough to recommend to those who like their genre fare more offbeat, but it doesn’t come together in the same satisfying way that Whannell’s previous effort did.

    We Live in Time

Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh star in A24’s romance We Live in Time, which you may want to watch with a box of tissues nearby. It’s all about the inventive structure here, as it’s a story you’ve otherwise likely seen before. The movie is told nonlinearly, turning it into a sort of puzzle you solve as it goes.

It’s a neat trick to keep you engaged in what could be overly familiar, weepy material, and both Pugh and Garfield are great in it as a couple that we see go through many ups and downs over a decade. It’s refreshing that the movie isn’t afraid to present the hardships as equally as it depicts the good times.

    September 5

September 5 has to be one of the most overlooked and underseen movies of 2024. It earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture — Drama, and was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars, but still, it feels like few people have seen or heard of this movie.

Maybe some of that has to do with the fact that it is about events that were already famously depicted in the capital-G Great Munich, which Steven Spielberg directed. Still, that shouldn’t affect your interest in September 5, which tells a separate story.

It’s a journalism process movie that takes place during the 1972 Munich Olympics, when an American sports broadcasting crew found itself thrust into covering the hostage crisis involving Israeli athletes. It may be a journalism movie, and a great one at that, but it’s also a gripping thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat, as the sports journalists and the news junkies jockey to cover it effectively.

It’s about big ethical questions and moral quandaries that are as relevant today as they were in 1972, and you get the sense this moment in time was important in establishing broadcast journalism as we know it. A terrific nuts-and-bolts “how tough decisions get made in real time” movie!

How to watch: September 5 is now available to rent or purchase on Prime Video and other video on demand platforms.

    Piece by Piece

Piece by Piece isn’t the first animated movie to use the Lego aesthetic, but it’s certainly the first biopic about a real person to be depicted in Lego.

It’s not as strange as it sounds, and the movie actually does a good job of setting up why exactly you’re watching a movie about legendary music producer and musician Pharrell Williams in Lego form. Pharrell has synesthesia, which allows him to essentially see music, which alone is a clever justification for the colorful world in the movie.

There’s an infectious and inspiring creative energy that’s hard to ignore, and if the story of Williams’s rise from rags to riches wasn’t compelling enough, the soundtrack of wall-to-wall bangers that he either produced or sang on himself is undeniable.

    Kill

If you love a good revenge movie and you don’t mind a lot of blood and nonstop violence, the aptly titled Kill is for you. The plot is high-concept, yet simple: A guy is out for revenge, killing those who have wronged him, except it’s set entirely on a moving train.

Kill doesn’t pull a bait-and-switch exactly, but the degree to which the tenor of the violence changes after a certain death at the midpoint of the movie is unexpected and harrowing. A movie that revels in violent deaths suddenly starts showing you that every death means the world to someone — what was once just bombastic entertainment has been rendered upsetting and hard to shake.

Kill does a great job of building emotional stakes so the audience cares about what’s going on, and thankfully, the action is also shot well and choreographed so there’s rarely a dull moment.

  • Every player on Cavs roster showed up for Max Strus’ charity event last night

CLEVELAND — When Cleveland Cavaliers swingman Max Strus grew up in Chicago, Illinois, he became familiar with an event the Chicago Bears held where players would bowl with groups of fans whose ticket sales to the event would be donated to charities. Strus decided to put his own spin on that here in Cleveland, hosting his Bowl in the Land event on Monday evening.

Through his Max Strus Family Foundation, Strus held his bowling event at Corner Alley downtown. Groups bought their tickets for the event, and down all 12 bowling alley lanes, they got to interact with the Cavs.

That’s because Strus’ teammates showed up in full force. All his Cavaliers teammates were in attendance, splitting up between the groups. From Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley, and everyone in between, the Cavs spent the evening at the lanes. Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson, president of basketball operations Koby Altman and nearly all of Cleveland’s staff made it out for the event.

Having that kind of support—a day after the team played a record-breaking game against the Dallas Mavericks and one day before their highly-anticipated matchup against the Boston Celtics—meant the world to Strus.

“Every player is here; I couldn’t be more appreciative. We had a game yesterday, we play tomorrow, and to have an event tonight was probably not the best scheduling,” Strus said. “But nobody complained, nobody had any worries about it. They’re all here. They’re all here to support and, like I said that just shows you who they are as people. We’re having a great year on the court, but it’s just an honor to be teammates with these guys and to show everybody else who they are as people because they are truly special people.”

The money raised from the event will go towards several Northeast Ohio charities to be named soon. For Strus, giving back to the city he now calls home is the least he said he could do, appreciative of the support Cavs fans have shown all season long.

“The amount of respect we have in the city and the amount the fans show up for us and the support that we have constantly at every game, no matter what time of the day or night—it feels like every game is sold out and they’re always supporting us, so to be able to have that just makes this even more of something I want to do,” he said. “I just want to give that back and be supportive of them because of how much love they’ve shown us.”

With support from his team and fans, Strus is excited to give back. But as his foundation’s name indicates, he couldn’t do it without the support of his family. His parents, brother, sister and close friends made it to Cleveland for the event.

“My family is everything and I treat that not very lightly. My family is just the world,” Strus said. “They flew in here yesterday; they’re driving home. The amount of effort they’ve put in just to support me, it’s really hard to put into words. I’m just so grateful to have them to become the man that I am today.”

    We Follow Through

Want us to continue to follow through on a story? Let us know.

Last night, every player on the Cleveland Cavaliers roster came out to support teammate Max Strus at his charity event. The event, which raised funds for underprivileged youth in the Cleveland community, was a huge success thanks to the overwhelming support from Strus’ teammates.

It was truly heartwarming to see the entire Cavs team come together to give back to those in need. From signing autographs to taking photos with fans, the players went above and beyond to show their support for Strus and his cause.

This display of camaraderie and generosity is a true testament to the strong bond and camaraderie among the Cavs players. It’s moments like these that remind us of the positive impact athletes can have on their communities and the importance of giving back.

Thank you to Max Strus and the entire Cleveland Cavaliers team for showing us what true teamwork and compassion look like. Here’s to many more successful charity events in the future! #CavsGivingBack #TeamworkMakesTheDreamWork

  • Paul brothers to star in new Max reality series

Jake Paul and Logan Paul made social media announcements Tuesday that created widespread speculation the brothers would fight each other, but the teased March 27 event on streaming service Max will be a reality series rather than a boxing match, the streaming service confirmed Thursday.

Calling it the “moment you’ve waited a decade for,” the posts featured a head-to-head shot of the brothers with a March 27 date and the Max logo. The release later elaborated on those posts by specifying that the series, which will feature archival and previously unseen footage of the Paul brothers, will involve eight episodes and its debut season finale will air on May 15.

Jake Paul, 28, and Logan Paul, 29, are both YouTube stars who know how to create buzz. Their exhibitions have drawn the interest of the biggest names in combat sports. Jake Paul defeated Mike Tyson in November in an eight-round unanimous decision. Netflix announced more than 108 million viewed the event globally.

Jake Paul and Tyson, the former heavyweight champion, broke records. Promoters said in November that the Tyson-Paul fight was the highest-grossing combat sports event ever in Texas, pulling in $18.1 million. BetMGM said the bout was by far its most-bet boxing or mixed martial arts fight, taking three times the number of bets and four times the money of any combat sports event in its history.

Logan Paul is a part-time performer for WWE. He has been wildly successful in wrestling, having claimed the United States Championship and participated in several premium live events. He also went the distance in a boxing exhibition against Floyd Mayweather in 2021.

A potential fight between Logan Paul and former UFC champion Conor McGregor will not happen. McGregor said in December that he was in “preliminary agreements” with the family of billionaire industrialist Mukesh Ambani to fight Logan Paul in India. However, he said this week the UFC would not grant him permission.

The Associated Press and ESPN’s Brett Okamoto contributed to this report.

Get ready for a whole new level of entertainment as the infamous Paul brothers, Jake and Logan, are set to star in a thrilling new reality series on Max. The dynamic duo, known for their wild antics and larger-than-life personalities, are sure to bring the drama and excitement to your screens like never before.

Fans can expect to see the brothers take on new challenges, embark on exciting adventures, and of course, stir up some trouble along the way. With their massive following and undeniable charisma, the Paul brothers are sure to make this series a must-watch for fans of reality TV.

‘Big Rig’ is based on an idea by Post Malone himself, with the singer co-writing the story alongside Vault Comics’ editor-in-chief Adrian Wassel. Vault co-founder Nathan Gooden, known for his work on’ Barbaric,’ is illustrating the novel.

The story is set during the Dark Ages and follows an epic battle against demon hordes invading Europe. The story’s central characters are a secret sect of the Knights Templar called the Six Petals, who are struggling to defend against the demons.

And to make things even more exciting, a movie adaptation of ‘Big Rig’ is already in the works, with Post Malone himself set to star in the lead role.

  • Mad Max Will Meet Evil Dead In a New Comic From… Post Malone?!

Post Malone is entering the world of comics with Big Rig, a new project described as “Mad Max meets Evil Dead.” The new comic comes from publisher Vault Comics, in partnership with Michael Bay and Brad Fuller’s production company Platinum Dunes, who are also already developing the project into a feature film.

According to ComicBasics.com, Big Rig will be based on an original idea by Post Malone, with the singer teaming up with Vault Editor-in-Chief Adrian Wassell to write the comic with Barbaric’s Nathan Gooden handling the art duties.

Set in the Dark Ages, the story concerns the forces of Hell invading Europe. A sect of the Knights Templar known as the Six Petals pray to God for salvation, and receive a massive eighteen-wheeler called the Rig. An ex-communicated priest known as the Trucker then gets behind the wheel to do battle with the forces of Hell.

While the Big Rig graphic novel is scheduled to be released later in 2025, Vault will be releasing the first chapter on its own for Free Comic Book Day this May, as a way of building anticipation for the arrival of the full story. Malone himself expressed excitement at the project, stating:

This is going to kick ass. It’s amazing working with Vault and Michael Bay. Turning this idea into what we have has been unbelievable. The team has been crushing it, and I can’t believe we get to be a part of Free Comic Book Day.

While it would be easy to write the comic off as a vanity project, created solely to build interest in an eventual feature film, there’s no denying that “Mad Max meets Evil Dead” is an exciting concept.

Given the opportunity, Big Rig could be the surprise break-out indie comic of the year.

Further, the team that has come together to bring Post Malone’s vision to life should raise expectations for comic book fans. In particular, Nathan Gooden’s work on Barbaric wowed audiences when it debuted from Vault Comics in 2021, so getting to see the artist once again bring his mad, ultra-violent touch to a full-length graphic novel will be a treat for fans of bloody horror and high-octane action. Given the opportunity, Big Rig could be the surprise break-out indie comic of the year.

Fans will have to judge for themselves when the Big Rig graphic novel comes out in 2025. The Free Comic Book Day issue containing Chapter One of the story should give fans a taste of what to expect when the original graphic novel releases in full later this year. With its story of a Medieval ex-communicated priest driving a God-given eighteen-wheeler against the forces of Hell, Post Malone looks to be making a big splash with his Mad Max meets Evil Dead comic Big Rig.

  • MLB free agency: Braves sign Jurickson Profar to 3-year, $42 million deal; Max Scherzer joining Toronto Blue Jays

MLB free agency is nearing its conclusion, with many of the big names off the board and spring training right around the corner. But some impact players are still available.

Here’s a look at where things stand so far this offseason:

Future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer will spend his 18th MLB season in Toronto. Scherzer and the Blue Jays have reportedly agreed on a one-year, $15.5 million deal, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Scherzer was No. 42 on Yahoo Sports’ list of this winter’s top 50 free agents. He was injured for much of 2024, pitching just 43 1/3 innings with a 3.95 ERA, but the season prior, he helped the Texas Rangers win the World Series.

After a relatively quiet offseason, the Braves are adding 2024 All-Star Jurickson Profar on a three-year, $42 million contract. Profar spent the previous season and a half with the San Diego Padres, hitting .280/.380/459 in 2024 and earning a Silver Slugger Award. He will make $12 million in 2025 and $15 million in each of the following two seasons.

Since winning the World Series in 2021, the Braves have struggled to get back to the top of the sport. They’ve reached the playoffs in the past three seasons but haven’t made it past the division series.

The Los Angeles Dodgers continued their offseason show of force on Tuesday by adding Kirby Yates, another of the top relievers on the market, to their bullpen, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The former Texas Rangers closer has agreed to a one-year, $13 million contract with an additional $1 million in incentives for games played, according to Passan. The deal had been reported to be in the works a week ago.

    • SP Michael King avoids arbitration, settles with San Diego Padres

King’s deal includes a $1 million salary for 2025 plus a $3 million signing bonus. There is also a mutual option for 2026 that is worth $15 million.

The 2025 contract includes incentives that could push his total earnings to $8 million.

The 29-year-old King came to San Diego in the Juan Soto trade in December 2023. He made 30 starts last season and recorded a 2.95 ERA with 201 strikeouts in 173 2/3 innings.

    • Polanco reportedly returning to Mariners

    • Dodgers make Kirby Yates deal official, DFA Ryan Brasier

Here is the state of the Los Angeles Dodgers: They just DFA’d Ryan Brasier, who has a 1.89 ERA in 68 appearances across two seasons with the team, because he is their sixth-best right-handed reliever.

Brasier, who is due $4.5 million for this season, will almost certainly draw trade interest, but the Dodgers now have Kirby Yates (officially), Blake Treinen, Michael Kopech, Brusdar Graterol and Even Phillips on the right-handed side alone.

    • What to make of this deal for Scherzer and the Jays?

It wasn’t much of a mystery what kind of contract Scherzer would command after fellow veteran right-handers Alex Cobb, Charlie Morton and Justin Verlander all inked one-year, $15M pacts earlier this winter, but it took a while for Scherzer’s potential landing spots to crystalize. Ultimately, the Blue Jays emerged as the strongest candidates to secure the future Hall of Famer’s services, and a deal came together less than two weeks before pitchers and catchers report to spring training.

Having already addressed their needs for power and bullpen help with Anthony Santander and Jeff Hoffman, Toronto has now tabbed Scherzer as their salve for a rotation that also needed reinforcing. Add the December acquisition of second baseman Andrés Giménez to vastly improve the club’s infield defense, and the Jays have upgraded nearly every facet of their club this winter. Extending Vladimir Guerrero Jr. remains the most consequential decision facing Toronto this offseason, but the club has unquestionably gotten better across the board this winter.

Have the Jays improved enough to warrant consideration as legitimate postseason contenders coming off a last-place finish in 2024? If Scherzer can stay healthy for a full season, there’s a good bit to be excited about in the rotation, which features three other highly accomplished right-handers in Kevin Gausman, José Berríos and Chris Bassitt. If Bowden Francis’ surprising second-half breakout from last season was legit, this could end up being one of the stronger units in the American League. However, those are some pretty big “ifs.” Scherzer, who turns 41 in June, made only nine starts in 2023 and has navigated myriad ailments in recent years.

Toronto will still need a lot to go right on both sides of the ball to compete in the unforgiving AL East, but credit to them for pushing aggressively to improve the roster, even after several failed free-agent pursuits earlier in the offseason. — Shusterman

    • Max Scherzer joining Blue Jays on 1-year deal

Future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer will spend his 18th MLB season in Toronto. Scherzer and the Blue Jays have reportedly agreed on a one-year, $15.5 million deal, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Scherzer was No. 42 on Yahoo Sports’ list of this winter’s top 50 free agents. He was injured for much of 2024, pitching just 43 1/3 innings with a 3.95 ERA, but the season prior, he helped the Texas Rangers win the World Series.

    • Carlos Estévez reportedly joining Royals on 2-year, $22 million deal

Reliever Carlos Estévez has reportedly agreed to join the Kansas City Royals on a two-year, $22 million deal with a $13 million club option, per multiple sources.

Estévez spent last year with the Angels and Phillies, pitching to a 2.45 ERA with 50 strikeouts in 55 innings. In the postseason with Philadelphia, Estévez made three appearances, pitching 2 2/3 innings and surrendering two runs while recording four strikeouts.

He was No. 28 on Yahoo Sports’ list of this winter’s top 50 free agents.

    • Reds reportedly acquiring Taylor Rogers from Giants

Rogers has spent the past two seasons with San Francisco, posting a 3.06 ERA and throwing 128 strikeouts in 111 2/3 relief innings.

    • What to make of Kim’s deal with the Rays?

Amid an offseason of uncertainty for the franchise due to the damage done to Tropicana Field by Hurricane Milton, the Rays have quietly gone about their business in hopes of upgrading a roster coming off the franchise’s worst finish since 2017.

This deal addresses an obvious short-term need in a similar fashion to the one-year pact with backstop Danny Jansen inked earlier this offseason. While Junior Caminero appears primed to seize the third-base job, shortstop projected as a position of weakness for the Rays. Taylor Walls is a tremendous defender but an abysmal hitter, and Jose Caballero profiles better in a utility role than as an every-day shortstop. The 21-year-old Carson Williams is one of baseball’s top overall prospects and spent all of 2024 at Double-A, but his strikeout issues suggest he might still be a year or two away from being ready to contribute in the big leagues. Kim represents an ideal bridge to Williams, whether he ends up opting out after 2025 or sticks around for both years of his deal.

A fantastic glove in his own right, Kim offers similar defensive upside to Walls and far greater upside with the bat. The unknown with Kim — and surely the reason the 29-year-old had to settle for a deal much lower than what many projected — is how he’ll bounce back from shoulder surgery, which cut his 2024 season short. Walls and Caballero will likely continue to cover short to open the season, but the hope is that Kim can return in May and upgrade the position in a meaningful way. It’s a sensible landing spot for Kim and a nice upside play for a Rays franchise whose limited budget generally precludes them pursuing free agents capable of 4-plus WAR seasons.

    • Rays agree to two-year, $29 million deal with infielder Ha-Seong Kim

Infielder Ha-Seong Kim is heading to the Tampa Bay Rays, agreeing to a two-year, $29 million contract with the team, per multiple reports. The deal reportedly includes an opt-out after the first season.

Kim, who spent the past four seasons with the San Diego Padres, is recovering from shoulder surgery but is reportedly expected to return to play in May. He is expected to take over at shortstop in Tampa.

    • Tigers reportedly in agreement with Tommy Kahnle

The Detroit Tigers and right-handed pitcher Tommy Kahnle are in agreement on a one-year, $7.75 million deal, per multiple reports. Kahnle spent the previous two seasons with the New York Yankees, posting a 2.38 ERA with 94 strikeouts in 83 1/3 innings pitched.

    • Dodgers add RP Kirby Yates

The former Texas Rangers closer has agreed to a one-year, $13 million contract with an additional $1 million in incentives for games played, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The Dodgers are now on track for a $379 million payroll, per Fangraphs’ estimate, which would be the largest payroll in MLB history. The 110% CBT surcharge would mean this deal is more like a $27.3 million deal for them.

Yates is coming off one of the best seasons by a reliever in 2024, with a 1.17 ERA that ranked behind only Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase for the best mark among relievers.

    • MLB The Show announces cover athletes: Paul Skenes, Gunnar Henderson, Elly De La Cruz

For the first time ever, MLB The Show has three cover athletes: 2024 NL Rookie of the Year and Pirates ace Paul Skenes, 2023 AL Rookie of the Year and Orioles slugger Gunnar Henderson, and Reds All-Star shortstop Elly De La Cruz.

    • Is Steve Cohen right to complain about the Mets’ Pete Alonso negotiations?

    • Ryan Pressly to the Cubs

The Houston Astros stuck a deal on Sunday to send closer Ryan Pressly to the Chicago Cubs. Pressly waived his no-trade clause in order to make the deal happen.

The 36-year-old held a 3.49 ERA in 56 2/3 innings last season with the Astros. The longtime veteran earned two All-Star nods during his seven-year run in Houston, with the most recent coming in 2021.

    • Mets owner Steve Cohen gets candid about Alonso trade: “I don’t like what’s been presented to us”

The New York Mets have been making big moves this offseason, including signing Juan Soto to a mega contract. But one stubborn piece of the Mets’ offseason has been trying to bring back Pete Alonso.

At a fan fest event on Saturday, Mets owner Steve Cohen made it clear that negotiations are ongoing, but he is frustrated with the process.

“Personally, this has been an exhausting conversation and negotiation. I mean, Soto was tough — this is worse,” Cohen said.

With things dragging on, Cohen even hinted that the team might have to move on from Alonso if the two sides remain in limbo.

“As we continue to bring in players, reality is [it] becomes harder to fit in Pete to what is a very expensive group of players that we already have,” he said.

    • Jose Altuve open to changing positions if it helps bring Alex Bregman back

On the news that the Astros have reengaged with Alex Bregman, second baseman Jose Altuve was asked how he would help bring the longtime third baseman back to Houston.

“For Alex, I’ll do whatever,” Altuve said. That reportedly includes moving to the outfield and allowing Isaac Paredes, who was acquired in the Kyle Tucker trade with the Cubs, to take his spot at second base.

    • Astros renew talks with 3B Alex Bregman: Report

Alex Bregman’s career with the Astros appeared to be over after Houston signed free-agent first baseman Christian Walker. However, with Bregman’s market apparently stalled, the Astros have resumed talks with the third baseman, who has played all nine of his MLB seasons with Houston, The Athletic reports.

Bregman has reportedly attracted interest from the Red Sox, Blue Jays and Tigers. But his rumored pursuit of a contract in the five-year, $200 million range has apparently been an obstacle, as it was with the Astros.

Houston made a six-year, $156 million offer to Bregman, and that deal is still available, according to reports.

Bregman batted .260 with a .768 OPS, 26 home runs, 30 doubles and 75 RBI in 634 plate appearances last season for the Astros.

    • What to make of Profar’s deal with Atlanta?

Traditionally one of the more active teams each winter, Atlanta had been eerily quiet this offseason coming off its seventh consecutive trip to October. The Braves were one of just a handful of teams that had yet to sign a free agent to a guaranteed big-league deal this winter, but they finally got on the board with the addition of Profar on a three-year deal worth $42 million.

The Padres — with whom Profar starred in his breakout 2024 season — have also yet to sign a major-league free agent this winter, and they surely would’ve loved a reunion with Profar. But San Diego’s ongoing ownership dispute and bloated payroll apparently made retaining Profar difficult. Instead, he joins a Braves team that had an unsettled left-field depth chart that projected to feature the largely unproven Jarred Kelenic and recent signee Bryan De La Cruz in a platoon of sorts. Now that duo can cover right field until Ronald Acuña Jr. returns from ACL injury, at which point Acuña should join Profar and center fielder Michael Harris II to form one of the more dangerous outfield trios in the National League.

The switch-hitting Profar and his excellent on-base skills will provide some much-needed balance to a Braves lineup that severely underwhelmed in 2024. While Profar’s plate discipline has always been stellar, it was a notable uptick in power production supported by huge strides in his batted-ball quality that fueled his 2024 breakout that he has now parlayed into an eight-figure deal. Although he’ll no longer be a main character in the Dodgers-Padres rivalry, Profar could continue to play a key role for a team hoping to dethrone the champs in 2025.

    • Jurickson Profar signs with Braves

Outfielder Jurickson Profar has signed a three-year, $42 million deal with the Atlanta Braves, the team announced Thursday.

According to the Braves, Profar, who was No. 15 on Yahoo Sports’ Top 50 MLB free agent list, will earn $12 million in 2025 and $15 million in 2026 and 2027.

Last season with the San Diego Padres, Profar posted a career year, batting .280, hitting 24 home runs and driving in 85 runs with 10 stolen bases. Among National League left fielders, his 4.3 fWAR was highest, and he was above the 90th percentile in expected wOBA (.364) and expected batting average (.283). He was also the sixth-best hitter by wRC+ in the NL.

    • Anthony Santander’s deal with Blue Jays includes $61.75M in deferred money, opt-out

In a surprising turn of events, the Atlanta Braves have made a big splash in free agency by signing infielder Jurickson Profar to a lucrative 3-year, $42 million deal. Profar, who spent last season with the San Diego Padres, is known for his versatility and defensive prowess, making him a valuable addition to the Braves’ roster.

Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays have also made a major move by signing star pitcher Max Scherzer to a deal, bolstering their pitching staff and solidifying their status as contenders in the American League. Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, brings a wealth of experience and talent to the Blue Jays, who are looking to make a deep playoff run next season.

Both signings are sure to shake up the landscape of the MLB and will be worth keeping an eye on as the season approaches. Stay tuned for more updates on free agency moves and roster changes as teams prepare for the upcoming season.
