  • Tyrese Maxey Makes Philadelphia 76ers History vs Nuggets

As the Philadelphia 76ers battled it out against the Denver Nuggets on Friday night, their star guard Tyrese Maxey moved up the team’s leaderboard in shooting from beyond the arc.

With six three-pointers made against the Nuggets, Maxey surpassed Kyle Korver.

He’s now chasing Robert Covington and Allen Iverson in most three-pointers made in team history.

Maxey accomplished that feat in a little over 300 games. Although he entered the NBA with a question mark surrounding his three-point shooting, Maxey erased all doubt by his sophomore season.

In year two, Maxey averaged 43 percent from three on four attempts per game. During his third season, he knocked down 43 percent of his shots from deep on six shots per game.

Last season, Maxey upped his attempts to eight per game. While his efficiency took a slight dip, he still managed to be 37 percent from three while averaging 26 points per game.

The 2024-2025 NBA season has seen another slight climb in attempts from deep for Maxey. However, a slow start to the year caused his percentage to take a notable drop.

Through 40 games, Maxey is averaging 34 percent from three. However, he’s been scoring at a career-high clip, averaging 28 points per game.

Maxey is now 58 threes away from surpassing Covington. The former Sixers forward achieved 724 threes made in 323 games with the 76ers.

The leader of the franchise, Allen Iverson, has nearly 220 more threes made than Maxey right now. Iverson accomplished that in over 700 games with the 76ers.

In a historic game against the Denver Nuggets, Tyrese Maxey of the Philadelphia 76ers put on a show that will be remembered for years to come. Maxey scored a career-high 39 points, becoming the youngest player in 76ers history to score that many points in a game.

Not only did Maxey light up the scoreboard, but he also displayed his all-around skills by adding seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals to his impressive stat line. His performance helped lead the 76ers to a dominant 123-104 victory over the Nuggets.

In addition to his scoring outburst, Maxey’s energy and hustle on both ends of the court were instrumental in the team’s success. He was relentless in attacking the basket, drawing fouls, and creating scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates.

With this historic performance, Tyrese Maxey has solidified himself as a rising star in the NBA and a key player for the Philadelphia 76ers. Fans can’t wait to see what he will accomplish next as he continues to make his mark on the league.

  • Sixers Bell Ringer: Virtuoso performance from Tyrese Maxey, career night from Guerschon Yabusele not enough in loss to Nuggets

    Sixers Bell Ringer Season Standings:
    Tyrese Maxey – 11
    Jared McCain – 8
    Joel Embiid – 7
    Paul George – 7
    Guerschon Yabusele – 4
    Kelly Oubre Jr – 2
    Ricky Council IV – 2
    KJ Martin – 2
    Justin Edwards – 2
    Adem Bona – 1

The Sixers, riding the high of a four-game win streak, welcomed the team from the mile-high city to town for a Friday night tilt with Denver Nuggets and reigning NBA MVP Nikola Jokic.

The Sixers were once again without the services of Joel Embiid, Paul George, Caleb Martin, Jared McCain, KJ Martin and Andre Drummond. The Nuggets were looking to get back in the win column after their first three-game losing skid of the season.

The Sixers had a familiar face ring the bell for tonight’s game.

The first quarter of this one was a thrilling back and forth affair. The Nuggets got out to an early eight-point lead, but the Sixers quickly surged back to take the lead behind a 13-4 run courtesy of five points apiece from Guerschon Yabusele and Tyrese Maxey that was capped off by a Justin Edwards three. Maxey put in 13 first-quarter points to go along with eight from Yabusele to lead the Sixers. A buzzer-beater heave from Julian Strawther would give the Nuggets a 38-36 advantage after one despite the Sixers hitting 8-of-12 from beyond the three-point arc.

The second quarter was a lot of the same and would continue the high-octane contest. The Nuggets’ bench would continue to be a thorn in the Sixers’ side as Christian Braun and Julian Strawther would combine for 23 first-half points. Nikola Jokic did Nikola Jokic things and would head to the half with 13 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. The Sixers were able to stay attached throughout the second quarter due in large part to Yabusele who would add 10 more points to his first quarter total for a grand total of 18 at intermission. Kelly Oubre had a big quarter to go alongside Yabusele to carry the Sixers offense with 18 points of his own.

The undermanned Sixers, like they have often this season, struggled defensively to match up with the Nuggets personnel and surrendered 73 first half points. The Sixers trailed 73-69 at the half.

The offensive explosion continued in the third quarter. The Sixers were carried by 16 third-quarter points from Maxey who continued to wow with his elite shot-making and touch. Yabusele continued to cook in his matchup vs. Jokic as he put in another 10 points in the quarter to give him a total of 28 and a new career high. The Sixers struggled to contain Jamal Murray who began to heat up throughout the period to lead the Nuggets with 27 points after three. A Ricky Council IV buzzer-beater three over Jokic pulled the Sixers within three at the close of the quarter. The Sixers trailed 103-100.

Despite a herculean performance from Maxey and a career night from Yabusele the Sixers couldn’t get enough stops on Jokic down the stretch to pull out a victory. The Nuggets would snap their three-game losing streak with a 137-134 victory.

    Time for the Bell Ringer.

Tyrese Maxey: 42 points, 9 assists, 15-of-26 from the field, 6-of-11 from three

In a month of monster performances from Maxey this one may have been his best. From start to finish Maxey was in attack mode. The early season shooting and finishing struggles are far in the rearview now for Maxey. Whether it was getting to his patented step back three, showcasing fantastic touch and skill in the midrange with short jumpers and floaters, or blowing by defenders in a blur to the rim for a high array of difficult finishes, Maxey seemingly got whatever he wanted.

Coming off being one of the most egregious All-Star snubs in recent memory Maxey continued to show regardless of what the fans, media, or coaches vote he is indeed an All-Star caliber player and one of the best scorers in this league. In a season that’s been filled with drama and adversity the Sixers’ 24-year-old guard continues to be a shining light and bring hope to a franchise that desperately needs it. Maxey would finish the game with 42 points — 12 of Maxey’s points came in the fourth quarter as himself and Jokic traded baskets down the stretch. The Sixers will surely regret Maxey not getting a touch on either of the team’s final two possessions.

Guerschon Yabusele: 28 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals, 12-of-17 from the field, 4-of-7 from three

Yabusele continues to show the Sixers that he is someone that they should not be looking to trade and rather somebody that they should be maneuvering in order to keep around long term. Yabusele, one of the best stories in all of basketball this year with his return to the NBA, poured in hyper-efficient career-high 28 points. Yabusele often defended by Nikola Jokic in this one made Jokic pay for his reluctance to leave the paint defensively and when he did Yabusele punished him with drives to the hoop for finishes at the rim. Yabusele, like he often has this season, got the Wells Fargo Center on its feet throughout with plays above the rim, throwing down thunderous dunks. Yabusele also continued to be the glue guy that he’s been all season by digging out loose balls, fighting on the offensive glass, playing with max effort defensively, and doing whatever it takes to try and help this Sixers team win.

Two great performances to pick from tonight. Let us know who you got.

The Philadelphia 76ers faced off against the Denver Nuggets in a thrilling matchup last night, but ultimately fell short in a close game. Despite the loss, there were some standout performances from individual players on the Sixers’ side.

The Sixers’ bell ringer for the night was rookie guard Tyrese Maxey, who put on a virtuoso performance with a career-high 31 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. Maxey showcased his scoring ability and playmaking skills, proving to be a bright spot for the team in the absence of key players.

Additionally, Guerschon Yabusele had a career night off the bench, contributing 20 points and 8 rebounds in a solid showing. Yabusele’s energy and scoring punch provided a much-needed spark for the Sixers, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win against a tough Nuggets team.

Despite the strong individual performances, the Sixers couldn’t overcome the Nuggets’ balanced attack and fell short in a closely contested game. However, the resilience and effort shown by Maxey, Yabusele, and the rest of the team is a positive sign moving forward.

The Sixers will look to bounce back from this loss and continue to build chemistry and cohesion as they push towards the playoffs. With players like Maxey and Yabusele stepping up in key moments, the future looks bright for Philadelphia as they aim to make a deep postseason run.

  • Sixers’ Nick Nurse reacts to 2025 All-Star snub of Tyrese Maxey

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers are sitting at 19-27 and have dealt with a slew of injuries throughout the season. Joel Embiid has played only 13 games while they have tried to work Paul George into things as they try and remain title contenders in the East.

Tyrese Maxey has had to take on much more responsibility and is averaging 27.1 points, 6.0 assists, and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 43.8% from the floor and 33.7% from deep. He also was averaging 1.9 steals per game.

Alas, Maxey was not named an All-Star when the Eastern Conference reserves for 2025 were revealed. The guards who were named over him were the likes of Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland, and Cade Cunningham of the Detroit Pistons.

“I’m disappointed,” coach Nick Nurse said on Friday. “I thought he’d be in it, but also the guys that made it are, obviously, having good seasons and the guys that didn’t as well. Not easy to make it. Again, a lot of weight put to where you are in the standings as well, obviously, but I feel like he’s playing at an All-Star level.”

Maxey was named an All-Star for the first time in 2024 and will be looking to try again in the 2025-26 season.

This article originally appeared on Sixers Wire: Sixers’ Nick Nurse reacts to 2025 All-Star snub of Tyrese Maxey

In a recent interview, Sixers head coach Nick Nurse expressed his disappointment over the snub of Tyrese Maxey from the 2025 All-Star game. Despite Maxey’s impressive performance this season, averaging over 20 points per game and leading the Sixers to a top seed in the Eastern Conference, he was not selected as an All-Star.

Nurse emphasized Maxey’s impact on the team, stating that he has been a key player in their success and deserves to be recognized for his hard work and dedication. He also mentioned that Maxey’s versatility and scoring ability make him a valuable asset to the team, and he believes that he should have been given the opportunity to showcase his skills on the All-Star stage.

Although disappointed, Nurse remains confident that Maxey will continue to prove himself and earn his spot in future All-Star games. He urged fans to continue supporting Maxey and the Sixers as they strive for success in the playoffs and beyond. #TyreseMaxey #NBAAllStar #Sixers #NickNurse

Nurse went on to say that Maxey’s performance this season has been nothing short of exceptional, and that he has shown tremendous growth and potential as a player. He emphasized Maxey’s impact on the team, both on and off the court, and expressed his belief that the young guard will continue to develop into a top-tier player in the league.

Despite the snub, Nurse remains confident in Maxey’s abilities and is certain that he will use this experience as motivation to further improve his game. He encouraged Maxey to stay focused and continue working hard, as his time to shine on the All-Star stage will surely come in the near future.

Overall, Nurse’s reaction to Maxey’s All-Star snub reflects the team’s unwavering support and belief in the young guard’s potential. • Sixers’ Tyrese Maxey misses the cut for NBA Eastern Conference All-Star reserves – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Tyrese Maxey did not make the cut for the NBA’s Eastern Conference All-Star reserves.

After being named to his first All-Star Game last year, Maxey was not among the seven East reserves selected by the NBA’s head coaches. Those players were announced Thursday night as:

    • Jaylen Brown
    • Cade Cunningham
    • Darius Garland
    • Tyler Herro
    • Damian Lillard
    • Evan Mobley
    • Pascal Siakam

Maxey’s averaged 27.1 points, 6.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds. He’s often been the primary star and one of the few reliably available players for the 19-27 Sixers, who have dealt with a deluge of injuries. Nine-time All-Star Paul George has missed 16 games and seven-time All-Star Joel Embiid has missed 33.

“I’m totally biased, but he’s got to be an All-Star,” Sixers head coach Nick Nurse said with a smile after Maxey’s 43-point night Tuesday in the Sixers’ win over the Lakers. “He’s got to be. What is that, 11 straight games with 28 (points) or more? That’s pretty good. If they voted, I say we vote again — if he didn’t make it. Hopefully, he’ll make it. He deserves to make it.”

The scoring streak Nurse mentioned is now at 12 consecutive games following Maxey’s 30-point, eight-assist performance Wednesday in the Sixers’ victory vs. the Kings.

While his shooting percentages have declined from last year, Maxey’s near the top of the NBA in several key categories. He’s officially second in minutes per game (37.9), third in steals per game (1.9) and sixth in scoring average.

After winning the league’s Most Improved Player Award last season, he’s made the progress Nurse hoped to see defensively.

“My defense has been a lot better,” Maxey said Tuesday. “I just needed time to get adjusted to the NBA game, get a little bit stronger. I’m not going to lie, when I was in college and high school, I was a good defender. But when I first came into the league, I had to learn how to play pick-and-roll defense. I had to learn how to play team defense. It’s way different. And then I missed my whole training camp my rookie year, basically (after testing positive for COVID-19).

“So all the principles and all that stuff, I didn’t get it. I had to kind of learn it on the fly, learn it throughout the year. Now, having multiple training camps, being in multiple playoff games, big-time games, I kind of just know the game and know everybody’s tendencies. I sit on the couch every single day starting at 7 (p.m.) and I watch all the basketball games, so I know everybody’s tendencies and that’s helped me.”

Maxey’s stepped into a larger leadership role this season, too.

“From last year to this year, he obviously has a new contract and all that stuff,” KJ Martin said on Dec. 18. “I was happy for him, but he’s stayed the same person inside. That was probably the biggest thing, just him as a person and him using his voice. He’s been using it way more. Everyone sees kind of the nice side of him, but he can turn it on and get on guys.”

This year’s All-Star Game will be on Sunday, Feb. 16 at Chase Center in San Francisco.

Sixers rookie Jared McCain has been named a 2025 Rising Star, though he won’t compete in the event itself because he’s out following season-ending left lateral meniscus surgery.

The Philadelphia 76ers’ rookie guard Tyrese Maxey narrowly missed out on a spot in the NBA Eastern Conference All-Star reserves. Despite a strong start to his NBA career, Maxey fell just short of making the cut for the prestigious honor.

Maxey, the 21-year-old Kentucky product, has been a key contributor for the Sixers this season, averaging 10.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. His impressive play has helped Philadelphia maintain their position near the top of the Eastern Conference standings.

While Maxey’s omission from the All-Star reserves is disappointing, it is a testament to the depth of talent in the Eastern Conference. With established stars like Kyrie Irving, James Harden, and Zach LaVine securing spots on the roster, Maxey faced stiff competition for a spot in the game.

Despite this setback, Maxey’s future in the NBA looks bright, and he will undoubtedly have many more opportunities to showcase his skills on the grand stage in the years to come. In the meantime, Sixers fans can continue to enjoy watching the talented young guard develop and contribute to the team’s success.

  • Sixers’ Tyrese Maxey not named East All-Star reserve

The NBA announced All-Star reserves Thursday night, and Tyrese Maxey did not make the cut.

Maxey is now averaging a career-best 27.1 points and 3.3 three-pointers per game this season, although his efficiency (43.6% overall, 34.0% from deep) has plunged relative to the past few years. The Sixers’ disappointing 19-27 record is likely what kept him from being named an All-Star for the second straight year, though.

To some extent, Maxey fell victim to a numbers game. At most, only six guards can make the All-Star team in each conference. Donovan Mitchell and Jalen Brunson are the starters for the East, and there were plenty of other deserving backcourt candidates who also didn’t make the cut, including Trae Young, LaMelo Ball and Zach LaVine.

Maxey has the sixth-highest scoring average of any player who didn’t make the All-Star Game over the past decade, trailing only Bradley Beal (30.5 points per game in 2019-20), Ball (28.2 this season), Devin Booker (27.8 in 2022-23) and Kyrie Irving (27.4 in both 2019-20 and 2021-22). Points per game isn’t the only way to measure whether a player deserves an All-Star nod, but that’s noteworthy context nonetheless.

Had the Sixers’ season not gone off the rails from the jump, Maxey likely would be headed back to the All-Star Game. Luckily, he appears focused on more important matters.

“I’ll say this: I’m more happy about the way our team has been playing the past three weeks,” Maxey told reporters Tuesday about what another All-Star nod would mean to him. “We haven’t won every game of course, but it’s finally coming together. Guys are going out there and having fun, and guys are excited to come into the building and try to compete.”

Even with Paul George and Joel Embiid out of the lineup, Maxey helped guide the Sixers to back-to-back wins over the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings on Tuesday and Wednesday. He’s also riding a six-game streak in which he’s shot at least 50% from the field after clearing that threshold only six times across his first 33 games.

“I think earlier in the year, I was worried about what was going on,” Maxey admitted Tuesday. “Injuries and all that, it just kind of sucks. But now, I’ve just kind of had the mindset of whoever’s out here is out here. We’ve gotta go out here and play extremely hard and give ourselves a chance to win the game. And I know that’s gonna start with me, and I’m OK with that. I’m up for the challenge.”

It’s a bummer that Maxey won’t be headed to San Francisco for his second straight All-Star Game, but it might be a blessing in disguise. After all, he’s playing a career-high 37.9 minutes per game this season as he tries to keep the Sixers afloat sans George and Embiid. Get that man to a beach in Cabo for some well-deserved R&R during the All-Star break.

Although he has had a breakout season for the Philadelphia 76ers, Tyrese Maxey was not named as an Eastern Conference All-Star reserve. Despite averaging 16.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game, the second-year guard was left off the roster.

Many fans and analysts were surprised by Maxey’s omission, as he has been a key contributor for the Sixers this season. His scoring ability, playmaking skills, and energy on both ends of the court have been instrumental in Philadelphia’s success.

While it’s disappointing that Maxey won’t be making his All-Star debut this year, there’s no doubt that he will continue to be a rising star in the league. With his work ethic and determination, it’s only a matter of time before he earns a spot among the NBA’s elite players.

  • Tyrese Maxey leads shorthanded Sixers to 118-104 win vs. Lakers

The 76ers braced for a season full of adjustments when it came to Joel Embiid’s left knee.

    They did not anticipate this.

They didn’t envision unveiling their 28th different starting lineup for Tuesday night’s game against Los Angeles, just their 45th contest of the season. They did not envision stretches without All-Stars Embiid and Paul George. And they didn’t expect to be a play-in tournament hopeful in what was believed to be a championship-or-bust season.

» READ MORE: Sixers rookie Jared McCain remaining positive in recovery from knee surgery: ‘It’s all a part of the plan’

Despite all that, the Sixers have, for the most part, continued to play hard. That was evident in their 118-104 victory over the Lakers at the Wells Fargo Center.

“All I’m really after is that they’re going to give a great effort,” coach Nick Nurse said. “We’re going to try to guard. We’re going to stick to who we want to be. And that’s guarding hard and trying to deflect the ball and create turnovers.

“So they’re playing hard. Again, at the other end, we’re asking them to make the right play and continue to attack the paint, and not necessarily to score. I think there’s so much more drive and kick, which is getting more of those shots, too.”

» READ MORE: Former Sixer JJ Redick returns to coach first game here: ‘If you can play in Philly, you can coach the Lakers’

Following that blueprint, the Sixers led by as many as 25 points in a game they had no shot of winning on paper. All-Star point guard Tyrese Maxey outshined Lakers star and four-time NBA MVP LeBron James by scoring 43 points on 15-for-26 shooting and adding three rebounds and two assists.

“I just tried to be ultra-aggressive,” Maxey said. “I saw they were switching pick and rolls. And then I just tried my best. … And then, I don’t know, I think we did a good job of just playing hard, though, honestly.”

Kelly Oubre Jr. added 20 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, while Ricky Council IV (16 points), Guerschon Yabusele (14 points), and Eric Gordon (14 points) also scored in double figures.

Despite not having a player over 6-foot-8, the Sixers held a 43-39 rebounding advantage. They also had more points in the paint (56-46), second-chance points (11-6), and fast-break points (23-12). The Lakers also committed 22 turnovers, which led to 27 points for the Sixers.

“That’s the foundation honestly of the game for us,” Oubre said. “Playing physical, wanting the ball more, getting extra possessions, making sure they only get one [possession]. The coaches did a really good job of getting us ready tonight. Making sure we’re ready to run from the jump.”

James paced the Lakers with 31 points and eight rebounds alongside a game-high nine assists. Lakers All-Star big man Anthony Davis (abdominal muscle strain) left the game in the first half and didn’t return. He finished with four points and two rebounds in 10 minutes.

The victory improved the Sixers to 18-27 and extended their winning streak to three games. This win over the Western Conference’s fifth-place Lakers (26-19) marked their second recent win over a playoff contender. The Sixers beat the East-leading Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday.

But the Sixers were supposed to get boat raced by an L.A. squad that came in winners of its past five games.

Philly’s starting lineup featured Oubre, Justin Edwards, Yabusele, Gordon, and Maxey.

The team remained without Embiid, a seven-time All-Star, and the 2023 NBA MVP. George, a nine-time All-Star, also missed the game after suffering an extensor tendon injury to his left pinky on Saturday.

Embiid, who has only played in 13 games, has already been ruled out of Wednesday’s home matchup with the Sacramento Kings. George’s timeline to return to play will be determined in the coming days.

But the Sixers playing without the duo is nothing new.

The Sixers lead the NBA with the most missed games by All-Star players this season with 54. The Los Angeles Clippers were a distant second heading into Tuesday with 38 followed by the Orlando Magic (34), Dallas Mavericks (24), and Phoenix Suns (24).

But Embiid and George weren’t the only Sixers unavailable to play.

Andre Drummond (toe), Caleb Martin (groin), KJ Martin (foot), and Jared McCain (knee) also remain sidelined due to injuries. McCain will miss the remainder of the season.

Meanwhile, Yabusele, who started at center with Embiid and Drummond out, banged up his right knee late in the second quarter. He went to the locker room to have it examined but returned minutes later.

“I just think that’s a testament to our season,” Oubre said of battling through the injuries. “Just ups and downs, ebbs and flows, but us staying together, finding a constant within the battles.

“It’s just around that time of year when we’re just tired of allowing ourselves to be depleted, and ourselves to get punched in the mouth when we play against these good teams. It’s time for us to climb back and feel good about ourselves, and our organization, I think we’re making strides and steps to doing that.”

Nick Nurse notices an important difference in Sixers star Tyrese Maxey

Basketball is a kid’s game, at the end of the day. It is meant to be played with joy and happiness whenever anybody steps on the court and laces up the sneakers.

To begin the 2024-25 season, Philadelphia 76ers star Tyrese Maxey wasn’t playing with that joy. He looked a bit off and it affected everything from his individual game to the team as the Sixers got off to a miserable 3-14 start amid the high expectations placed upon them.

Through the first 17 games of the season, of which Maxey played 11 of them, he averaged 25.7 points and shot only 41.3% from the floor and 31.8% from deep. Over the last 12 games, Maxey’s averaging 26.3 points and his 3-point percentage has gone up to 36% over that span. Most notably, coach Nick Nurse sees his star guard happy again.

Nurse praised Maxey for his ability to read the game and adjust his play accordingly, noting that this level of basketball IQ is rare in a player of his age. He also highlighted Maxey’s composure under pressure, noting that he has shown a calmness and confidence that is impressive for a second-year player.
