  • NYC mayor defends private meeting with incoming President Trump

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City’s Democratic mayor, who faces federal bribery charges, is defending his private meeting with President-elect Donald Trump as the Republican prepares to retake the White House on Monday.

Mayor Eric Adams on Saturday brushed off questions that his criminal case — or the possibility of a presidential pardon if he is convicted — came up during the Friday sit-down near Trump’s Florida estate, saying the case is something his legal team is handling.

“I made this clear a few days earlier that I was seeking to sit down and talk to the president about the issues concerning the city infrastructure, the migrant asylum-seeker issues, the settlement of the crisis in the Middle East,” he said.

“I’m the mayor of the biggest city in America,” Adams added, following remarks about the city’s preparations for a weekend snowstorm. “I’m supposed to speak with the president, like I spoke with President Biden.”

Adams issued a statement Friday night in which he stated the two “did not discuss my legal case” but instead focused on topics such as bringing manufacturing jobs back to the city and the Gaza ceasefire deal.

Trump has criticized the case against Adams and said he is open to giving the mayor, who had been a registered Republican in the 1990s, a pardon.

Adams is scheduled to go on trial in April on charges that he accepted luxury travel perks and illegal campaign contributions from foreign nationals in exchange for political favors, including helping the Turkish officials resolve city approvals for a diplomatic building in Manhattan.

Adams stressed Saturday that he does not intend to be “warring” with the Trump administration on immigration and other critical issues.

“Donald Trump received the popular vote. Donald Trump received the electoral vote,” he said. “America has communicated in a very loud and clear voice that we need to do something about our borders. America has communicated about how we need to build our economy and make sure jobs stay here. They have communicated around affordability.”

He also declined to say what role if any police and other city agencies would have as the Trump administration is expected to begin large-scale deportations, including immigration enforcement raids targeting the Chicago area as soon as Tuesday.

“I’m not gonna keep doing the same questions over and over again about the cooperation of city agencies,” Adams said. “The law is the law. Next question.”

The Brooklyn Democrat and former police captain also took jabs his own party and the outgoing Biden administration, which he has criticized over its response to the migrant surge in recent years.

“The party that’s in office took $6.9 billion out of our city” he said, referring to the amount of money his administration says it has spent to care for the roughly 250,000 asylum seekers who have arrived in the city since the spring of 2022. “That went away from our children, our families, our streets, our security.”

Adams said his face-to-face with Trump was about “ensuring that this city gets what it deserves,” an appeal he believes will be heard given the incoming president’s New York City roots.

“I’m looking forward to the next four years of having a president that loves the city like I love this city,” he said. “We’re gonna do what’s needed to move the city forward for everyday New Yorkers.”

In a recent press conference, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio defended his decision to hold a private meeting with incoming President Trump. The meeting, which took place at Trump Tower, was met with criticism from some New Yorkers who felt the mayor should have been more transparent about the discussions.

During the press conference, de Blasio explained that the meeting was necessary in order to discuss important issues facing the city, such as funding for public transportation and infrastructure projects. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a good working relationship with the incoming administration in order to effectively advocate for the needs of New York City.

De Blasio also stated that he made it clear to Trump that he will continue to stand up for the rights and values of all New Yorkers, regardless of any policy differences they may have. He assured the public that he will not compromise on issues such as immigration, healthcare, and civil rights, and that he will continue to fight for the best interests of the city.

While some critics remain skeptical of the mayor’s decision to meet with Trump privately, de Blasio remains steadfast in his belief that open lines of communication are essential in order to effectively govern and advocate for the needs of New York City.

  • NYC Mayor Eric Adams meets with Trump in Florida

NEW YORK — New York City Mayor Eric Adams met with President-elect Donald Trump at his West Palm Beach, Florida golf club on Friday, three days before the inauguration.

Adams’ team said he and the president-elect discussed a long list of priorities for New York City, but the mayor’s opponents within his party claimed he had an ulterior motive: a pardon for himself.

According to sources, Adams and Trump spoke for about an hour, touching on issues including border security and the deportation of migrants who are repeat violent offenders.

In a statement, Adams said he and the president-elect “had a productive conversation about New York’s needs and what’s best for our city, and how the federal government can play a more helpful role in improving the lives of New Yorkers. While we briefly touched on a number of issues, we specifically focused on the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas and how it will have a positive impact on public safety in our country; how we can bring manufacturing jobs back to New York, particularly in the Bronx; and how we can continue to make federal investments in New York City, especially when it comes to infrastructure.”

    Adams-Trump meeting not a surprise

Overall, it’s not a surprise Adams sought and was granted the meeting with Trump. Throughout his term, the mayor made a practice of meeting with everyone from President Joe Biden to gang members. He has said partnering with the federal government is critical to New York City’s success.

“We want to engage early,” Adams said in the days leading up to the meeting. “We’re going to sit down, reach out and want to sit down with him and talk about some of our vision for the city.”

Adams’ comments came as he disclosed First Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer and others were talking with the Trump team to arrange the face-to-face sit down.

“Mayor Adams has made quite clear his willingness to work with President-elect Trump and his incoming administration on behalf of New Yorkers — and that partnership with the federal government is critical to New York City’s success,” the mayor’s office said in a statement Thursday. “Tomorrow, Mayor Adams will sit down with President-elect Trump and discuss New Yorkers’ priorities. The mayor looks forward to having a productive conversation with the incoming president on how we can move our city and country forward.”

An Adams spokesperson said the mayor wanted to talk about a range of priorities, including border security, potential cooperation with federal agents on the deportation of migrants who commit crimes, transit and education aid.

“In my conversation with [Trump], he’s been clear that he wants to help New York and New Yorkers,” Adams said.

According to his schedule, Adams flew to Florida on Thursday and is returning to the city Friday night. The mayor is expected to discuss the trip during a press conference Saturday.

Adams’ opponents see an ulterior motive

Adams’ political opponents saw a darker motive for his trip to Florida. They believe the mayor is seeking a pardon from Trump, either before or after his trial for corruption charges.

“Eric Adams should state immediately that he will not seek or accept a pardon from Donald Trump. New Yorkers deserve to know that their Mayor is putting their interests ahead of his own – and whether our tax dollars, or Turkish Airlines, will be financing his trip to Florida,” City Comptroller Brad Lander, a Democrat trying to unseat Adams, wrote on X.

“Who is this meeting for, New Yorkers or Eric Adams? Our city has too many problems right now for us to worry about if he’s fighting for New Yorkers or a hypothetical pardon for himself,” Scott Stringer, the former city comptroller and another Democrat running against Adams, also posted on X.

Trump seemed to give rise to the possibility of pardoning Adams when he spoke about the mayor at the Al Smith Dinner in October.

“I know what it’s like to be persecuted by the DOJ for speaking out against open borders. We were persecuted, Eric. I was persecuted and so were you, Eric,” Trump said.

Adams said in the statement he did not discuss his corruption case with Trump.

“To be clear, we did not discuss my legal case, and those who suggest the mayor of the largest city in the nation shouldn’t meet with the incoming president to discuss our city’s priorities because of inaccurate speculation or because we’re from different parties clearly care more about politics than people. Like I’ve always done, I will take every opportunity possible to advocate for New Yorkers and our city, and after our discussion, I strongly believe there is much our city and the federal government can partner on to make New York City safer, stronger, and more affordable. I thank President Trump for his time and attention and look forward to working with him to benefit all New Yorkers,” the mayor’s statement continued.

Others view the Adams-Trump meeting as a smart move

Some political experts say Adams’ decision to meet with President-elect Trump was a smart move.

“It’s a reasonably thing to do. A reasonable mayor would do it and I think it benefits us in New York City for him to have a good working relationship with the incoming president,” said J.C. Polanco, an associate professor at the University of Mount Saint Vincent.

Polanco said Adams did the right thing by trying to carve out a good relationship with Trump. And he’s not the only one.

“I think if you’re mayor, you have to try your best to work with whoever’s in power,” said New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.

    Preparations for Trump’s Inauguration Day

The Adams-Trump meeting happened as Washington, D.C. prepared for Monday’s presidential inauguration and the transfer of power.

Trump’s ceremony was moved indoors due to freezing temperatures. Security is also be priority, especially given the two assassination attempts on Trump last year.

Approximately 25,000 law enforcement officers and military personnel will be there, along with 7,800 National Guard members. Pilots have been flying over the National Mall, scanning for radiology or nuclear irregularities on the ground, and there is a so-called “ring of steel” with 30 miles of anti-scale fencing around the city.

With all of these measures in place, authorities say they will be ready for the 250,000 ticketed guests. Those expected to attend include billionaires, tech CEOs and celebrities, along with President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and their spouses. Trump notably skipped Biden’s inauguration in 2021.

Trump’s inauguration comes just days after two other major national security events — the Jan. 6 electoral count and former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral.

In a surprising turn of events, New York City Mayor Eric Adams recently met with former President Donald Trump in Florida. The meeting, which took place at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, has sparked speculation and raised eyebrows across the political spectrum.

During the meeting, Adams and Trump reportedly discussed a range of topics, including crime reduction, economic development, and the future of New York City. It is unclear what specific agreements or plans were made during the meeting, but both parties have expressed a desire to work together towards common goals.

The meeting has drawn criticism from some of Adams’ supporters, who view Trump as a divisive figure with whom the mayor should not be associating. However, Adams has defended the meeting as an opportunity to engage with a wide range of viewpoints and perspectives in order to best serve the people of New York City.

As the political landscape continues to shift and evolve, it remains to be seen what impact this meeting will have on Adams’ mayoral tenure and his relationship with the broader political community. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

  • Mayor Duggan and Young Leaders: Shaping the Future of Detroit’s Automotive Industry

Featured Guests: MichAuto Advocacy Committee and the City of Detroit’s Youth and Civic Engagement task force

Concluding Day 1 of the 2025 Detroit Auto Show’s Industry Days event, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan delivered remarks during a private reception at the Detroit Regional Chamber on Jan. 15. He also participated in a Q&A session with the City of Detroit’s Youth and Civic Engagement Task Force, discussing opportunities for young individuals in the Detroit Region’s automotive industry.

On Detroit’s Important Automotive Industry Journey

Reminiscing the past decade or so of automotive progress within the Detroit Region, Duggan shared how Detroit has both a rich history and a unique opportunity to compete with other regions of similar size and talent, like Silicon Valley. With this, he said the Region needed a visionary platform for leaders across industries to collaborate to make it into a worthy national and global competitor.

“What I do know is I can create a climate where no matter what you’re building, we can get it done faster, more effectively for you in Detroit,” he said, noting that the adaptability and breadth of expertise positions the Region well, no matter which direction the automotive industry takes.

On How to Make Detroit a Better Place for Industry

With several participants from Detroit’s Youth and Civic Engagement task force in attendance, Duggan opened the floor to these attendees, gauging their Auto Show experiences and hearing about areas of opportunity that could be improved to support their futures within the Region’s automotive industry.

These areas of opportunity include cultivating a city where people want to live and work through education, infrastructure, and entertainment.

Duggan also shared some changes coming to Detroit in the upcoming months, like fast-charging stations, branded similarly to the Detroit Green Light Project, through mutually beneficial partnerships with small businesses to typically undesirable parking spaces.

Duggan and a youth attendee also discussed how early engagement with STEM through programs such as Soapbox Derby could positively impact the talent pipeline. Another suggestion included the idea of community “in-reach” and improving wraparound support for children and their caretakers better to cultivate students’ path toward this field.

In recent years, Detroit’s automotive industry has seen a resurgence, with new technologies and innovations driving growth and development. Mayor Duggan and young leaders in the city are playing a crucial role in shaping the future of this important sector.

One of the key initiatives championed by Mayor Duggan is the Detroit Mobility Innovation Initiative, which aims to position the city as a leader in the development and deployment of connected and autonomous vehicles. Through partnerships with industry leaders, research institutions, and startups, the initiative is creating a thriving ecosystem for innovation and collaboration.

Young leaders in Detroit are also making their mark in the automotive industry, bringing fresh perspectives and new ideas to the table. From engineering and design to marketing and business development, these rising stars are driving change and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the automotive sector.

By working together, Mayor Duggan and young leaders in Detroit are paving the way for a brighter future for the city’s automotive industry. Through collaboration, innovation, and a shared vision for success, they are shaping a more sustainable and prosperous future for Detroit and its residents.

  • Sheng Thao, ex-Oakland mayor, indicted in FBI investigation

Former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao has been indicted by a federal grand jury on criminal charges related to an FBI bribery case, the Department of Justice announced Friday, six months after agents raided her home and two months after she was voted out of office.

Thao’s longtime boyfriend, Andre Jones, and David Duong and his son, Andy Duong, were also charged in the indictment.

U.S. Attorney Patrick D. Robbins said the defendants used bribes, mail fraud, wire fraud, and other illegal practices to manipulate and corruptly influence local government.

Robbins said the defendants knowingly entered into agreements “knowing that bribes would be offered and accepted by Thao and Jones in exchange for allowing the Duong’s to exercise illegal influence over the levers of city government.”

The San Francisco Chronicle was first to report this latest development.

Thao, Jones, and the Duongs appeared before a judge at the United States Courthouse in Oakland around 11 a.m. Following the arraignment, the former mayor exited the courthouse alongside her attorney, Jeff Tsai, who addressed the media on her behalf.

“The case is built on allegations from an unknown co-conspirator that we believe when the evidence is revealed will show that my client has committed no crimes,” said Tsai. “The indictment’s timing as well, is curious, we think the timing has amplified the politicization of this issue, but it has not served the ends of justice, ensuring that everyone is treated fairly.”

After Tsai addressed the media, he and Thao went back inside the courthouse for processing by U.S. Marshals on the federal charges. She was then interviewed for pre-trial services. She appeared calm and was quiet.

A federal judge said Thao is free on an unsecured bond with travel limits. She must surrender her passport.

    When did it start?

    What we know:

According to the indictment, the illegal dealings began in October 2022, before the November Oakland mayoral election. Before the election, Thao allegedly made promises that would benefit the Duong family if she were elected.

“Examples of promises allegedly made by Thao included her agreement to purchase housing units from a company owned by the Duong family, her agreement to ensure the extension of a contract for recycling services that the City of Oakland had with one of David and Andy Duong’s companies, and her agreement to use influence to help appoint a high-level city official to benefit the Duong’s business interests.,” said Robbins.

    The exchange

Federal officials said that in exchange for Thao carrying out her commitments, the Duongs made payments to Thao and her boyfriend in various forms, including funding a $75,000 negative mailer campaign targeting her political rivals. The Duong family also made $95,000 in payments to Thao and her boyfriend disguised as wages for a no-show job for Jones. The payments were made to look as if Jones had a legitimate job with the Duongs housing company to cover up the bribery.

Federal officials said Thao directed that the payments be made to Jones to avoid a “paper trail.”

Once Thao was elected, she fulfilled her promise to use her influence to appoint an Oakland city official, selected by the Duongs, to protect the family’s business investments, including the housing company and recycling business. That city official is not named in the indictment.

    FBI raid at Thao’s home

    The backstory:

Thao’s home was raided by the FBI in June, though at the time, the agency would not confirm what they were investigating.

“The FBI is conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity on Maiden Lane. We are unable to provide additional information at this time,” the department said in June.

FBI agents were seen coming in and out of the Maiden Lane home with gloves and badges.

Thao was not seen at the home when agents carried out the raid.

RELATED: The real politics of the federal raid on Oakland’s mayor

At least three other locations were also raided in 2023 and were being investigated by the FBI, including 1211 Embarcadero, the location of Cal Waste, owned by the Duong Family.

FBI raid at 3 more locations

The two other locations were also associated with the Duong family, on View Crest Court and Skyline Boulevard.

At the View Crest home, a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous told KTVU in June he saw two people in handcuffs at the home, as FBI agents continued their investigation.

RELATED: Oakland mayor’s lawyer says she has ‘nothing to hide,’ ‘will cooperate’ with FBI investigation

    Who is the Duong Family?

The Duong family is heavily involved in politics and fundraising for politicians in state and local government. The IRS also confirmed with KTVU that their criminal investigation agents were at the scene of Cal Waste on Embarcadero for law enforcement reasons.

The Duong family owns Cal Waste Solution. David Duong and his son Andy Duong are the only members of the family charged.

Winston Chan, an attorney for Andy Duong, told KTVU in a statement that his client is innocent and that the allegations have no merit.

“We have kept quiet despite the media frenzy of the past months in the hope that the government would correctly come to see through objective investigation that the allegations are baseless, and being fanned by nothing more than gossip and supposition stitched together by the fabrications and delusions of those who lack all fundamental credibility,” said Chan. “But disappointingly, Andy instead is today the most recent in a long line of Asian Americans who unfairly are singled out and forced to pay a price for daring to be active in the political sphere.  We look forward to clearing his good name before the court and a jury of his peers.”

    Who is Andre Jones?

Following the FBI raid of Thao’s home, Oakland City Attorney Barbara Parker was required to hand over documents to federal officials, including those related to Andre Jones.

Parker was instructed to preserve and provide documents and communications tied to Jones, who had been the assistant chief for the State Bureau of Cannabis Control. He has been Thao’s romantic partner for 10 years. The two met when he was chief of staff for Councilwoman Rebecca Kaplan, where Thao also worked.

Federal agents requested documents related to the 2022 Oakland mayoral election and all calendar entries involving Thao and Jones from June 1, 2022, to the present.

    Thao’s denial

    The other side:

Thao has consistently said she is innocent of any crime or wrongdoing.

“I am 1,000% confident that I will be vindicated,” Thao said in 2024.”I still have the same questions. What was the probable cause to come into my home, to make this huge scene? You know, at the end of the day, the reason why I’m still making sure that we’re moving with all the successes in the city of Oakland is because I know I did nothing wrong.”

    Thao’s recall

    Dig deeper:

Thao was recalled by Oakland voters in the November election. Thao’s recall, along with former District Attorney Pamela Price, were the first successful recalls in the city’s history.

The last time a mayoral recall vote occurred in Oakland was in 1917 against Mayor John Davis, and it was unsuccessful, the city clerk’s office told the San Francisco Chronicle. There were calls to recall Mayor Libby Schaaf and Mayor Jean Quan, but those efforts never made the ballot.

    Thao departs mayoral seat

Thao departed her mayoral seat in December after the recall election. Nikki Fortunado Bas served as mayor until Jan. 6, when she assumed her role as an Alameda County supervisor. City councilmember Kevin Jenkins was appointed president of Oakland’s city council on Jan. 6, allowing him to become the city’s interim mayor.

Voters will choose the city’s next mayor in an April special election.

    Sheng ThaoOakland

Sheng Thao, ex-Oakland mayor, indicted in FBI investigation

Former Oakland mayor Sheng Thao has been indicted in an FBI investigation for alleged corruption and misconduct during her time in office. The indictment comes after months of speculation and rumors surrounding Thao’s actions while serving as mayor.

According to the FBI, Thao is accused of accepting bribes from developers in exchange for favorable treatment and contracts. The investigation also uncovered evidence of embezzlement and fraud within Thao’s administration.

Thao, who was elected as mayor in a landslide victory just two years ago, has vehemently denied the allegations and plans to fight the charges in court. However, many residents and officials in Oakland are shocked and disappointed by the news.

This scandal has rocked the city and raised questions about transparency and accountability in local government. As the case unfolds, the people of Oakland are left wondering how such corruption could have gone undetected for so long.

  • Mayor Bass says she’s committed to rebuilding LA, appoints Steve Soboroff to lead efforts

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass Friday appointed longtime civic official, businessman and developer Steve Soboroff to lead rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of the devastating wildfire that wiped out the majority of Pacific Palisades and surrounding areas.

“Steve Soboroff’s name is attached to hope,” Bass said in naming him the city’s chief recovery officer. “It is attached to energy, and it is attached to many, many accomplishments. He will recommend a comprehensive city strategy for rebuilding and for expediting — expediting is a very important word here — we want to expedite the return of residents, businesses, schools, nonprofits and parks.

“Steve has agreed to give himself to Los Angeles once again. He knows our communities. He knows how to activate City Hall. He’s been in City Hall several times, called to duty on several different occasions.”

Bass said “no one is better equipped to create a rebuilding plan” than Soboroff, former president of the city Police Commission and a longtime businessman who spearheaded development the arena now known as Crypto.com Arena downtown and the Playa Vista community. He also led efforts to coordinate the complex move of the space shuttle Endeavour through the streets of Los Angeles to the California Science Center.

    RELATED:

“People in L.A. are hurting,” Soboroff said. “They are frustrated, like the mayor said. They’re confused. They want to know what they can do today. They can’t get back to their homes to find the pictures of their loved ones. And a whole lot of people are out of work, as a community has been wiped off the face of the Earth. A community that’s about 120 years old. I lived in it. My kids grew up in it for 40 years.

“… What we need is and what I hope people will start out with today is hope,” he said. “There is an A-to-Z for each one of us. And `A’ is today, and we’re going to get there step by step. And the city is going to help to the extent it can, and we will have to outsource to the extent it can’t.”

For people critical of the city’s efforts in response to the fires, Soboroff said, “If people want to get on the bus with us, get on it. If they want to spend their time throwing embers right now and next Tuesday when it’s windy by spending time on that kind of stuff, just don’t get on our bus.”

Without offering any specifics, Bass said she plans to sign a series of executive orders next week aimed at expediting the recovery effort.

“We are going to do everything we can to clear the way so people can get back home,” she said.

She also said the city will also initiate a full after-action investigation into the handling of the fire disaster — following criticism ranging from the preparedness of the fire department to respond to the blaze and the availability of water and adequate water pressure in the Palisades area.

Bass said the city will conduct an investigation of its own, but there would also be an external review.

    WildfiresKaren BassLos Angeles

In a recent announcement, Mayor Bass has declared her unwavering commitment to rebuilding Los Angeles following recent challenges. To spearhead these efforts, she has appointed Steve Soboroff as the head of the rebuilding task force.

Soboroff, a seasoned leader with a proven track record of success, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the table. His strategic vision and hands-on approach make him the perfect candidate to lead the city’s recovery efforts.

Together, Mayor Bass and Soboroff are determined to revitalize Los Angeles, create new opportunities, and build a brighter future for all residents. Stay tuned for updates on their progress and initiatives as they work tirelessly to rebuild and strengthen our beloved city. #RebuildLA #StrongerTogether

  • Former Oakland mayor Sheng Thao indicted months after being recalled | Oakland

Sheng Thao, the former mayor of Oakland, California, has been indicted by a federal grand jury, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The indictment comes seven months after an FBI raid on Thao’s home and two months after she was recalled by voters in Oakland.

The anonymous source interviewed by the Chronicle added that the formal announcement of the indictment was scheduled to take place on Friday, so little is known about what exactly Thao will be charged with. On Thursday the US attorney’s office issued a press advisory stating that the FBI, US Postal Service and US Internal Revenue Service would reveal a “significant law enforcement action”, reported Oaklandside, a local news outlet.

Thao’s brief tenure as the mayor of Oakland has been marked with controversy that culminated in her being removed from the office in a recall. The district attorney was also recalled during that election. Thao fired Oakland’s police chief, Leronne Armstrong, in February 2023. She argued that she lost confidence in Armstrong after an investigation implicated him in systemic failures within the department and after he publicly accused the federal watchdog of corruption, without evidence, the Guardian reported last October.

She was also accused of being soft on crime which her critics say contributed to the loss of the baseball team the Oakland Athletics and the departure of chain restaurants In-N-Out and Denny’s.

Following the June FBI raid, Thao denied any wrongdoing and argued that the raid was suspiciously timed since it came days after backers of a mayoral recall were informed by the city clerk that they had collected enough signatures to qualify for the ballot, the Guardian reported last June.

Thao was elected as Oakland’s mayor in 2022, becoming the first Hmong American woman to lead a major US city and the youngest Oakland mayor in 75 years. Before that, she had a built a long reputation of community involvement and activism and had served as an intern for Oakland’s vice-mayor Rebecca Kaplan. She had pledged to fill vacancies in Oakland’s corruption-plagued police force and vowed to invest in violence prevention programs.

Thao served just 18 months as mayor before a recall effort was launched – the first in the city in more than a century – bankrolled by wealthy tech and crypto executives. She was ousted in the November election.

The Guardian reached out to Thao’s attorney Jeff Tsai for comment on the reported incoming indictment but did not get a response at the time of publication. Tsai told the Mercury News that neither he nor Thao had been contacted by the US attorney’s office and was unaware of new movement into the federal investigation.

Former Oakland mayor Sheng Thao indicted months after being recalled

In a shocking turn of events, former Oakland mayor Sheng Thao has been indicted on charges of corruption and embezzlement just months after being recalled from office. Thao, who was once seen as a rising star in Oakland politics, now faces serious legal trouble that could land her behind bars.

The indictment alleges that Thao used her position as mayor to embezzle funds from the city and engage in corrupt practices for personal gain. The charges come as a devastating blow to Thao’s reputation and political career, which had already been tarnished by the recall effort that removed her from office.

Thao’s indictment has sent shockwaves through the Oakland community, with many residents expressing disbelief and disappointment at the allegations against a former leader they once trusted. The news has also raised questions about the integrity of Oakland’s political system and the need for greater transparency and accountability among elected officials.

As Thao prepares to face the legal consequences of her alleged actions, the people of Oakland are left to grapple with the fallout of a scandal that has rocked their city to its core. Only time will tell what the future holds for Thao and the legacy she leaves behind in Oakland politics.

  • Recalled Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao criminally indicted by federal grand jury: report

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) — Former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao has reportedly been criminally indicted by a federal grand jury, following an extensive FBI corruption investigation.

The East Bay Times reports her partner, Andre Jones, is also being indicted.

More information is expected at a press conference Friday morning.

Thursday night, ABC7 News talked the Thao’s former chief of staff.

“Two years ago, everyone said I was lying and tonight, everyone knows I was telling the truth,” said Renia Webb. She said this moment is a reset for the City of Oakland.

Thao was elected mayor of Oakland in 2022, and was then recalled by voters last fall.

The news was first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

“I’m honestly sad about Sheng. Again, she’s a mom. She’s very bright and smart. She just made really foolish decisions. She has to deal with the consequences of her actions,” said Webb.

The FBI raided Thao’s home last summer along with several other locations, including properties belong to the Duong family.

The family holds Oakland’s curbside recycling contract with California Waste Solutions. That family has been the focus of a city probe into campaign contributions.

In front of cameras days after the raid, former Mayor Thao denied any wrongdoing.

“I want to be crystal clear; I have done nothing wrong, and I can tell you with confidence that this investigation is not about me,” said Thao in June 2024.

It is not clear what charges Thao faces — we reached out to attorneys and investigators but have not heard back.

Webb testified in front of a federal grand jury last month.

“I was informed there was pay-to-play behavior going on. That there was corrupt behavior going on in that administration,” said Webb.

Report details Andy Duong family’s political ties and who they donated to, including Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao whose home was raided by the FBI.

Thursday evening, ABC7 News insider Phil Matier says the federal indictment has profound implications.

“For a long time the question was — was she involved or was she just in the room? Did something happen or was it an associate of hers? Was it her live-in boyfriend, is it other people? If this indictment comes out, then what we are saying is we know she was directly involved in some way,” said Matier.

He went on to say, “The feds don’t mess around. If federal money is involved, they are going to do an investigation. They have zero tolerance for public officials bartering or dealing on the side.”

Webb says let this be a lesson to other elected leaders.

“Serve the people in the way you are supposed to with honesty and transparency and if you don’t, you are going to get recalled and you might go to jail if you are doing illegal and corrupt stuff,” said Webb.

  • Vincent D’Onofrio teases Mayor Fisk in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ trailer (exclusive)

They’re not exactly friends, but they do have a history. The new trailer for Daredevil: Born Again is framed around a scene of Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) talking together at a New York City diner. Taking a break from their alter egos as vigilante Daredevil and crime lord Kingpin, these two seem to be chatting rather amiably — but there’s a bloody history lurking beneath their words.

This scene carries weight, not least because it’s rare. In fact, Cox exclusively tells Entertainment Weekly that he and D’Onofrio worked to minimize the amount of scenes they share together in the upcoming revival series, to save the impact for when it matters most.

“I believe you have to be really careful when and how you bring these two people into the same room because we have to feel like when they meet, it is an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object,” Cox says. “It has to feel like it could and will explode. The more you bring us together with no consequence, the less that illusion can maintain itself.”

Cox continues, “there’s actually an episode later on in the season where in an original draft we had a conversation, and I brought this up. I said, ‘I worry that if you tell the story that we can have a conversation and walk away from it at this stage, we lose a lot of stakes.’ So they found a really cool way to not have us do that.”

Although the rivalry between Daredevil and Kingpin is likely what Daredevil fans are most excited to see in Born Again, the trailer makes clear that other old friends will be along for the ride as well. Jon Bernthal reprises his role as Frank Castle, a.k.a. the Punisher — and if Matt is asking him for help, you know the stakes are high. On a lighter note, Matt’s old friends Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) are also back, which makes Cox very happy.

“I think of Karen and Foggy as being the heartbeat of Daredevil,” Cox says. “Without them, nothing that Matt does really has any emotional impact. The humanity and vulnerability that they brought to those characters allows me as Matt to really delve into the darkness.”

The new trailer also confirms something that was first hinted at in the Echo finale: Fisk will be running for mayor of New York City. Hey, if Donald Trump can be re-elected president while under legal indictment, why can’t the Kingpin of Crime become the legal leader of New York? Though the storyline is inspired by the recent “Mayor Fisk” saga in Marvel’s Daredevil comic (written by Charles Soule and Christos Gage, with art by Ron Garney and Stefano Landini), D’Onofrio says viewers should prepare for the unexpected.

“Anything on our show is, nine out of 10 times, leading to something that’s even bigger and crazier,” says D’Onofrio, talking carefully to avoid premature spoilers. “For Fisk, this journey is a path to more control.”
