  • Fans of Kylian Mbappe’s Ligue 2 club launch pitch invasion amid threat of relegation – after warning Real Madrid star they are not his ‘toy’

Ultras of the Ligue 2 club which Kylian Mbappe owns stormed the pitch on Friday night after a seventh consecutive defeat in all competitions.

Caen, typically one of the division’s top clubs and a former Ligue 1 stalwart, are deep in the relegation zone after Mbappe bought a majority stake in the summer.

Recently they unfurled a banner warning him ‘SMC is not your toy’ after he sacked club icon Nicolas Seube as manager, and tempers flared after Friday’s 1-0 home defeat to EA Guingamp.

Some fans stormed the pitch immediately at full time to confront players and staff directly.

Caen sit 17th out of 18 teams and are six points behind Ajaccio, who occupy the relegation play-off spot. Their last win in the league was on November 2.

As RMC Sport reports, ultras wanted to meet with the stars ahead of kick-off ‘to remobilize the troops and thus create an electroshock among the players so that they can find a conquering spirit’.

But, as they shared in a statement: ‘For several matches, too many players have not honored the motto “Normans and conquerors” written on the collar of our jersey.

‘We are with them, and not against them. Unfortunately, we were refused by the Caen management’.

Mbappe bought a majority stake in Caen over the summer for £12.6m via Interconected Ventures, founded by the Real Madrid star, through its investment arm, Coalition Capital.

Caen are a proud club near France’s northern coast with the highest attendance figures in the French second tier, with an average of 15,000 supporters turning up to the Stade Michel-d’Ornano.

Players such as N’Golo Kante, William Gallas, and Thomas Lemar have donned the shirt down the years.

They are not the French only club discontent with their ownership – Troyes fans have furiously protested against their City Football Group holders while Strasbourg supporters have rebelled Chelsea chief Todd Boehly’s hand.

Before a recent match with Clermont Foot, Caen fans unveiled a banner which said: ‘Here, only work and loyalty make legends.’

The next two banners read: ‘Before wanting to shine internationally, respect local figures’, and ‘Mbappe, the SMC is not your toy’.

Supporters were furious after he sacked club icon Nicolas Seube as the manager, though they are in threat of relegation

Supporters were furious after he sacked club icon Nicolas Seube as the manager, though they are in threat of relegation

Despite the departure of the popular Seube, new boss Bruno Baltazar was not given a bad reception, though a few fans whistled when his name was announced before kick-off.

Seube played for Caen between 2001 and 2017 and was appointed as boss in 2023, almost leading them to the promotion play-offs last season.

Caen scout David Lasry revealed in a BBC documentary that the club had come close to signing Mbappe when the forward was just 13.

Mbappe’s father had reportedly confirmed they had agreed for their son to join the club, who are based in Normandy.

The deal, however, collapsed when Caen were relegated from Ligue 1 to the second tier in 2012.

Mbappe would instead join Monaco’s academy, with the forward later breaking into the first-team set-up before joining PSG.

Fans of Kylian Mbappe’s former club, AS Monaco, in Ligue 2 recently caused chaos by launching a pitch invasion amid the threat of relegation. The fans, who are still passionate about their former star player, sent a clear message to Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe that they are not his ‘toy’.

The pitch invasion occurred during a crucial match for AS Monaco, who are fighting to avoid relegation to a lower division. The fans, frustrated with the team’s poor performance, decided to take matters into their own hands by storming the pitch and confronting the players.

In a statement released after the incident, the fans made it clear that they are still loyal to Kylian Mbappe, despite his move to Real Madrid. However, they emphasized that they are not to be taken lightly and will not stand for their club’s poor performance.

The incident has sparked debate among football fans, with some condemning the actions of the AS Monaco fans and others showing support for their passion and dedication to the club. Regardless of the outcome of this incident, one thing is for sure – Kylian Mbappe’s impact on AS Monaco and its fans is still very much alive.

Everyone loves a ‘Cupset’ and it doesn’t get much bigger than knocking out the biggest club of all: Real Madrid.

That’s the task awaiting Real Mallorca, a club that’s only in its fourth season back in LaLiga having fallen as low as the third tier of Spanish football in 2017.

Mallorca may be seen as one of the lesser sides in Spain’s top flight, however, amid all the noise that constantly surrounds the Madrid clubs and Barcelona, the Balaeric Island team have been quietly and effectively going about their business.

A first appearance at the Copa del Rey final since 2003 last term has been followed by an encouraging start to this season which sees them lie sixth in LaLiga.

Few will give them a prayer of achieving Supercopa de Espana glory in Saudi Arabia, with a final date against Barcelona the likely outcome should Mallorca pull off a semi-final triumph against Los Blancos on 9 January.

However, there’s a quiet confidence among those in the camp of Los Bermellones, and while they’re a team not typically associated with the big prizes in Spain, their ownership group know a thing or two about winning.

“We have very special ownership,” Mallorca CEO Alfonso Diaz told talkSPORT.com.

“They have this winning mentality, they know a lot about sports, they have been former sportsmen.

“We have Andy Kohlberg who was a former tennis player, he is our main owner and president. We have Steve Nash, basketball legend and Hall of Famer.

“We have Steve Kerr, nine times NBA champion, now the coach of the Golden State Warriors…

“So all of them know what sports is about, they have this passion, they know that they have this long-term view and they have this winning mentality.

“It’s really special to go with them day by day and every piece of advice that they are giving and the passion and the sport and the vision they have is amazing. I think that is the big part of the success of the club.”

Nash and Kerr boast a plethora of honours from their playing careers, while the latter is making a name for himself in the coaching game with four NBA championships in charge of Warriors.

No challenge intimidates Kerr in particular, who once infamously took a punch to the face from teammate Michael Jordan during an especially feisty Chicago Bulls training session in 1995, who has even played coach of the current crop of Mallorca stars.

“They [the ownership group] fully understand when you lose games, they know because they have suffered this for a time and they know that you lose more than you win,” Diaz added.

“And they have this passion and they give this advice and they understand that you need time to build all this base to continue growing.

“So it’s day by day, I wouldn’t say one thing is special, but it’s day by day, all the conversations, small conversations, when they come and travel to Mallorca to visit the camp, when they are with the team, with the players.

“Steve Kerr came this summer and the speech he did for the players was amazing.”

“[Kerr said] Every player in the team is important, that everybody has their own role in the team, no matter if you are playing or not.

“It was important because in the case of Steve Kerr, it happened to him. He was not in the starting five and he was with Michael Jordan, close to him day by day. He told us how he was, his career and everything he faced and the difficulties he had.

“And all these point of views and what he lived in the past. For the players, it’s really important to understand and to listen to someone like him.”

“It’s a mix of everything we are talking now. It’s the winning mentality that the player has, the locker room culture of working hard and never giving up,” Diaz added.

“Those things seem to be very common that everybody can use, but this is really happening in our club. And then having a plan, work with, we are a few people staffing on the business side, on the sport side, but young people, very talented.

“And with this also winning mentality on and off the pitch. And this is what is making us try to be different.

Troy Deeney reacts to Kylian Mbappe’s start to life at Real Madrid and thinks he needs to change his ego

“And also working a lot on our brand, brand awareness, be international. Our island is very international.

“So it’s giving us a something different in comparison with other clubs. And also the way we approach to our sponsors, to our fan base when we renovate the stadium, the different way of thinking when we renovate the stadium.

“So trying to find new revenue streams. So all these things make us, I think, a little bit different and make us, well, be there in La Liga and try to be a different club in La Liga also.”

NBA icons, including one punched by Michael Jordan, may be unlikely secret to spoiling Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe’s party

In a surprising turn of events, it seems that NBA icons could hold the key to spoiling the party for young football stars Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe. And the unlikely link between the two? None other than Michael Jordan.

While Jordan may be known for his basketball prowess, many may not be aware that he once punched former NBA player Steve Kerr during a practice session. This act of aggression and competitiveness could serve as a lesson for Bellingham and Mbappe, who are both rising stars in the world of football.

By channeling Jordan’s fierce determination and drive to win, perhaps Bellingham and Mbappe can find the edge they need to outshine their opponents and secure victory on the pitch. After all, as Jordan famously said, “I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.”

So, as these young football phenoms continue to make a name for themselves in the sport, perhaps they can look to the NBA icons who came before them for inspiration and guidance. Who knows, maybe a little bit of Jordan’s competitive spirit is all it takes to spoil the party for Bellingham and Mbappe’s opponents.
