McClung might not be a familiar name to many NBA fans as he’s played just five NBA games since 2021 and has appeared in just one game this season. But those who tuned into the last two dunk contests are well aware of who McClung is.
McClung, who first gained recognition for his ridiculous dunks in high school, has won the last two dunk contests.
McClung is the veteran in this year’s dunk contest, as the other three players will be participating for the first time.
Castle, the No. 4 pick in the 2024 draft out of UConn, is putting together a phenomenal rookie year, averaging 12.2 points per game and making a strong case for Rookie of the Year. His first year in the league has, of course, included a handful of big dunks.
Buzelis was the No. 11 pick in the 2024 draft after cutting his teeth with G League Ignite rather than the traditional college route. His rookie year hasn’t been very notable thus far as he’s putting up just 5.4 points per game, but he’s looking to turn heads in the Dunk Contest.
Jackson, a second-round pick in the 2023 draft, is averaging 4 points and 3.3 boards per game this season, playing 17.5 minutes per contest. He should bring some exciting dunks to this year’s event as he clearly doesn’t lack any bounce.
This year’s Dunk Contest isn’t exactly a star-studded affair, but it should, like always, have plenty of excitement.

The four-man field for the 2025 Slam Dunk Contest is set.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Orlando Magic’s Mac McClung—the two-time defending Slam Dunk Contest champion—will be joined by San Antonio Spurs rookie Stephon Castle, Chicago Bulls rookie Matas Buzelis and Milwaukee Bucks guard Andre Jackson Jr. in this year’s event.
McClung is obviously the main attraction.
He became not only the first G League player to ever appear in the Dunk Contest back in 2023, but also the first one to ever win it, dazzling fans with a series of memorable moves.
And he defended his title last year, clinching the win by dunking over NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal.
McClung will be looking to become the first man to ever win three Dunk Contest titles in a row. He would also tie Nate Robinson for the most Dunk Contest championships (three) with a victory.
It was unclear if he would pursue the three-peat after his comments following last year’s events.
“I don’t know. We’ll think about it,” he told reporters after his 2024 win when questioned about going for a third straight title. “I’m not sure yet.”
He’ll have some top competition this time around, however. Castle has shown off some serious hops in his rookie season.
So has Buzelis. Both Castle and Buzelis have Slam Dunk Contest experience, albeit not at the NBA level, competing at the 2023 McDonald’s High School Dunk Contest.

And Jackson’s dunking prowess dates back to his high school years.
So this should be a fun event. But until someone proves they can unseat McClung, he’ll remain the prohibitive favorite.
The much-anticipated 2025 NBA Slam Dunk Contest is about to get even more exciting with the recent announcement of the participants. Mac McClung returns to NBA slam dunk contest eyeing 3-peat
Reigning two-time NBA slam dunk contest champion Mac McClung will compete in this year’s event at All-Star Weekend in San Francisco, sources tell ESPN.
McClung, who signed a two-way contract with the Orlando Magic in October, will look to claim the first dunk contest three-peat.
The return of McClung means the four-man field is set. McClung will compete against San Antonio Spurs rookie Stephon Castle, Chicago Bulls rookie Matas Buzelis and Milwaukee Bucks second-year player Andre Jackson Jr.
The 6-foot-2 McClung dunked over 7-foot-1 Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal last year in Indianapolis to become the fifth player in NBA history to win back-to-back dunk contests.
No player has ever won three consecutive dunk contests, though Nate Robinson is a three-time champion.
A guard, McClung led the G League in scoring with 25.7 points per game in 2023-24, and was named G League MVP for the Osceola Magic.
McClung, 26, played collegiately for Georgetown and Texas Tech.
After making a splash in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest for the past two years, Mac McClung is officially making his return to the competition, looking to secure a historic 3-peat victory. The high-flying guard has wowed fans and judges alike with his jaw-dropping dunks, showcasing his incredible athleticism and creativity in the air. With his sights set on becoming the first player in recent memory to win three consecutive dunk contests, McClung is preparing to bring his A-game to the court once again. Fans can expect nothing short of electrifying performances and mind-blowing dunks from the talented young player.

Who’s in 2025 NBA Dunk Contest? Reigning champ Mac McClung rounds out four-player field, per report
We’re less than one month away from 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend. The All-Star game rosters will be set later this week, and there are more invites to go around as the league’s best convene in San Francisco from Feb. 14-16. The Slam Dunk Contest is set to headline NBA All-Star Saturday Night on Feb. 15, and we now know what the field will look like.
Two-time defending NBA Dunk Contest winner Mac McClung committed to the 2025 event, per ESPN. His inclusion rounds out a four-dunker field that also reportedly features Spurs rookie Stephon Castle, Bulls rookie Matas Buzelis and Bucks guard Andre Jackson Jr.
No player has ever won the Dunk Contest three years in a row, so McClung has a chance to make history at the Chase Center in February.
Castle, meanwhile, was the first reported player to enter the 2025 Dunk Contest field, and he will be the first Spurs player to participate in the Slam Dunk Contest since Greg “Cadillac” Anderson in 1988. Castle, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, has already thrown down a number of highlight-reel slams. Perhaps most notably, he put two-time All-Defensive center Brook Lopez on a poster during the Spurs’ loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Jan. 8. In addition, Castle has soared for some impressive alley-oops, thrown down a windmill and converted some thrilling dunks in traffic.
His ability to elevate quickly off one or two feet and add power to his dunks has already made him one of the more exciting in-game dunkers. All of those traits should serve him well at All-Star Weekend. Castle’s 25 dunks this season are the most by any point guard, per Basketball-Reference.
Castle is off to a solid start in his rookie season. Through 42 games, he’s averaging 11.7 points, 2.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. Among all rookies he is fourth in scoring and third in assists as his play has helped the Spurs stay in the mix for the playoffs. The Spurs have not made the postseason since 2019.
Buzelis hasn’t had as a big of a role with the Bulls as Castle in San Antonio, but he has shown his explosive finishing ability while averaging just under 13 minutes per game. There is always potential for a highlight reel play whenever the 6-foot-10 Buzelis is on the court. The No. 11 overall pick in the 2024 Draft is averaging 4.9 points and 2.7 rebounds per game and will be the first Bulls player to take part in the Dunk Contest since Tyrus Thomas in 2007.
Jackson Jr. is a second-year player from UConn. He’s averaged 3.6 points per game for the Bucks in 17.1 minutes per game, and there’s no questioning his hops.
The 2025 NBA Dunk Contest is shaping up to be an epic showdown, with reigning champion Mac McClung set to defend his title against three fierce competitors. According to reports, the four-player field for the highly anticipated event will also include rising stars Zion Williamson, Anthony Edwards, and RJ Barrett.McClung, who wowed fans with his high-flying acrobatics and jaw-dropping dunks in last year’s contest, will be looking to once again steal the show and solidify his status as one of the league’s top dunkers. But he’ll face stiff competition from Williamson, the electrifying forward known for his powerful slams and highlight-reel plays.
Edwards, the explosive guard with a penchant for throwing down thunderous dunks, and Barrett, the versatile forward with a smooth shooting stroke and a knack for finishing above the rim, round out the star-studded field.
Fans can expect nothing but excitement and awe-inspiring athleticism from these four incredible talents as they battle it out for dunking supremacy in the 2025 NBA Dunk Contest. Stay tuned for more updates and be sure to tune in to witness these high-flying stars in action.
