“Something I Never Heard”: Cricket Australia CEO On MCG Crowd’s Roar After Nitish Reddy’s Ton

The collective roar of Indian fans after Nitish Kumar Reddy’s maiden hundred is something that he has never heard at the MCG, and Cricket Australia’s outgoing CEO Nick Hockley said on Sunday that it validated the decision to add a Test to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The CA’s decision to increase the number of Tests for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy from four to five has proved to be a masterstroke as crowd attendance and viewership records are set to surpass the hallowed Ashes.

“I want to say thank you to everyone who turned up, the atmosphere last night when Nitish Kumar Reddy scored his hundred, the roar of the crowd was nothing that I have ever heard,” Hockley told PTI in an exclusive interaction.

The record total attendance (over five days) for a Boxing Day Test till date is 271,865 against England back in 2013 and the fourth Test involving India has already witnessed a footfall of 255,462 spectators.

With two more days left, CA is expecting the attendance to go well past 300,000.

    Hockley couldn’t be more thrilled.

“Absolutely thrilled with the number of fans that have come round from all over India. It’s been an absolutely incredible atmosphere as we got over a quarter million people over the gates and that’s too on days one, two and three,” Hockley said.

“This Border-Gavaskar Trophy has had the biggest Boxing Day crowd ever passing the Ashes and the series is so delicately poised now, it is living up to every hype.” Hockley, who has had a good working relationship with the BCCI, said it was a no-brainer that the four-Test series between India and Australia transformed into a five-match rubber, considering its massive following.

“I think it speaks about the relations between India and Australia and fans are always excited to see these two teams. The five-Test series is what the fans deserve, players deserve. This series is likely to be alive going into Sydney.

“We haven’t had a full fifth day as we have had some unfinished business. I thank and am very grateful to the BCCI to have agreed to play a five-Test series. Hope it continues for the rest of the time.”

Days 1, 2 and 3 in Sydney all but sold out

There is forecast of rain during the New Year’s Test in Sydney but even then the Indian diaspora will throng to the grounds with very limited tickets still left for the first three days.

“Sydney will be very, very full. I think there are only very few tickets left for days one, two and three. We encourage people to quickly get their tickets if they want to come on Day 4.

“There is a wonderful community from India in Sydney and we expect a similar atmosphere like MCG,” he noted.

Excited about prospects of cricket’s inclusion in Brisbane 2032

Los Angeles Olympics 2028 will witness the re-introduction of cricket at the quadrennial extravaganza and Hockley along with current ICC chairman Jay Shah are also in talks with Local Organising Committee (LOC) of Brisbane 2032 for keeping the sport in the Games’ roster.

“I am super excited for cricket being in Los Angeles, 2028. It is going to be amazing. It will be an opportunity to showcase cricket to a global audience and we are very excited to host the Olympics in Brisbane in 2032. We are hopeful and excited about the prospects of cricket being part of Brisbane 2032.” “It is exciting times for cricket and the Olympics. We want more people who get to see our great game. T20 cricket for men and women is incredible entertainment and it has been the starting point of our discussion as to how we can help to grow the game globally,” Hockley concluded.

Boxing Day Test live: Australia hunts victory as India tries to chase down record score at MCG on day five

Live: Australia vs India at MCG

    22 overs left – India 6-138 (T: 340)

    Pat Cummins again.

Yashasvi Jaiswal jumps into the line of the ball and clips past Usman Khawaja for two.

Jaiswal keeps out the short ball. As long as he’s still out there, India has a chance of saving a draw.

    23 overs left – India 6-138 (T: 340)

Mitchell Starc revs up and gee that hurt. The first couple balls of every spell have been agony for the big man with a busted back.

He’s hiding the ball in his off hand as he comes in. Did Cummins maybe sense some reverse swing in his over?

Nothing yet. There’s a bit of movement off the pitch, but nothing in a dangerous line yet.

Washington isn’t looking at anything outside off, so Starc fires in at off stump. Washington digs it out.

The last ball is a good one, swinging in at the pads and Washington keeps it out.

Worth remembering Washington Sundar scored 62 off 144 in the first innings of that famous Gabba victory for India in 2021.

    24 overs left – India 6-138 (T: 340)

    Pat Cummins is back.

He’s starting well and Jaiswal is trying to drive off the back foot. He’s a little edgy all of a sudden.

Cummins bangs in a short ball and Jaiswal and whips his head out the way.

He edges the last one into the ground and Mitch Marsh cleans up.

Sunil Gavaskar weighs in on Rishabh Pant’s latest dismissal

Perhaps more tame and poetic than “STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!!!”.

Rishabh Pant slogs in a Test match.

“I’ve always felt that the six is like a drug. Once you’ve hit a couple of sixes, in any form of the game … it’s in you,” he says on ABC Sport.

“That could have been hit for a boundary.”

    25 overs left – India 6-138 (T: 340)

Lyon to Washington again. He’s navigated the offie pretty well.

He knows everything is outside off and spinning away, and he’s playing accordingly.

Lyon tries to fire one in faster and Washington bunts it away to point.

    26 overs left – India 6-132

Scott Boland is back with a silly mid-off for Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is on 76.

Jaiswal defends straight to him and Konstas has a fake shy at the stumps.

    (Getty)

Konstas is conducting the crowd clap from silly mid-off. Gotta love it.

    Again, though, Jaiswal is untroubled.

Boland angles in from around the wicket and Jaiswal clips off his hip for two more.

Four! What a shot. Beautiful off drive to a length ball. He is rock solid out there.

27 overs left – Lyon has fielders all around the bat

Two slips, two silly mid-offs, a short leg. Washington is in a battle.

And he edges behind, but wide of slip.

Washington is defending well outside off.

Not a lot really happens in the over, but the fielders are having a grand old time.

28 overs left – In comes Scott Boland

Yashasvi Jaiswal faces up, with even more pressure on his young shoulders.

WHOOSH! Jaiswal throws everything at a rank wide one and misses everything. Was that about runs or just scaring the life out of Sam Konstas under the lid?

Konstas is in the firing line. He still won’t shut up though.

We have our answer on Travis Head’s celebration

    (ABC Sport)

It’s a reference to Head’s own joke after taking 4-10 in Galle in 2022.

64th over – Lyon with Washington Sundar the new man in

Another chance! A tough one, but Washington drives up into Konstas thigh at silly mid-off and the ball pops up behind him to safety.

Washington pushes hard and takes two to cover.

LYON GETS NITISH AND INDIA IS SIX DOWN!

Nathan Lyon gets a ball to skid on straight on and finds the outsid edge, and Steve Smith takes a superb catch down low to his left behind Alex Carey.

Lyon loved that one. The Aussies are up and about now.

29 overs left – Lyon again

Nitish Kumar Reddy is on strike.

63rd over – An enormous roar greets Nitish Kumar Reddy to the crease

The first-innings century-maker is out in the middle to face Boland.

A little leading edge as Nitish tries to clip off his thigh. That would have gone straight to a silly mid-off, but there’s no-one in there. Still not a very attacking field.

Cummins puts someone in there in response, and Nitish gets off the mark by turning a single off his hip behind square.

Jaiswal carves a couple into the deep. He’s still cutting from close to off stump.

JADEJA IS GONE!! Boland does it again!

Scott Boland strikes in his first over and India is five wickets down.

Not for the first time today, Boland gets a ball to jump at a batter and Jadeja can’t help but fend at it, getting a healthy nick through to Alex Carey.

30 overs left – Scott Boland replaces Travis Head

Saving Pat Cummins an Mitchell Starc for the new ball? But it’s still 18 overs away. I think it’s worth a couple of efforts from the strike men against the new batter.

31 overs left – Lyon is bowling with fielders around the bat

Ravindra Jadeja has Sam Konstas and Marnus Labuschagne jabbering away under the lids on either side of the pitch.

Lyon’s challenging both edges right now, but Jaiswal is doing well to smother the ball.

He’s getting a good stride in to defend.

    And that’s a maiden.

Any guesses what this celebration was about?

Not sure what Travis Head was doing after Rishabh pant’s wicket.(Getty)

32 overs left – Head comes over the wicket

Jaiswal is slashing to the off side and Head gets a look at Jadeja.

Jadeja pushes to mid-off and takes a single on Marnus’s arm.

Konstas is lippy in at silly mid-off.

Four singles including one of the last ball of the over. So Jadeja keeps the strike.

33 overs left – Nathan Lyon continues

Ravindra Jadeja is out there, but Lyon is still bowling to Jaiswal, who’s getting forward to defend.

“Has he picked it?” shouts Konstas at silly mid-off as Jaiswal plays back to defend a skidder.

Jaiswal nudges a single to cover, so Lyon has one ball at Jadeja.

The Boxing Day Test live: Australia hunts victory as India tries to chase down record score at MCG on day five

The final day of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground promises to be a thrilling one, with Australia looking to secure victory against India, who are attempting to chase down a record score.

Australia currently holds the upper hand in the match, having set India a daunting target of 335 runs to win. The Indian team will need to put on a stellar batting performance if they are to achieve the highest successful run chase at the MCG.

With the likes of Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Ajinkya Rahane in their lineup, India certainly has the firepower to mount a successful chase. However, they will need to navigate a strong Australian bowling attack led by Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc.

On the other hand, Australia will be looking to their bowlers to deliver the goods and secure the wickets needed to wrap up the match. Nathan Lyon will play a crucial role on the final day, with his spin bowling likely to be a key weapon against the Indian batsmen.

As the tension mounts at the MCG, cricket fans around the world will be eagerly watching to see if India can pull off a historic victory or if Australia will emerge triumphant. Stay tuned for all the action from the Boxing Day Test live!

  • BGT Boxing Day Test – All-time attendance record for a Test in Australia broken at the MCG

BGT Boxing Day Test – All-time attendance record for a Test in Australia broken at the MCG

A new attendance record for a Test match in Australia has been set with more than 350,700 passing through the gates at the MCG across the five days of the fourth Test between Australia and India, surpassing the previous mark of 350,534 set in 1937.

Cricket Australia confirmed on Monday that 51,371 had already come in for the first session of the fifth day, with more to follow later in the afternoon.

The crowd tally meant that more people have attended the 2024 MCG Boxing Day Test than had seen a Sir Donald Bradman-led Australia play England in January 1937 at the same venue, which was played over six days.

The crowds have been absolutely extraordinary for this Test match with daily tallies of 87,242, 85,147, 83,073, 43,867 and 51,371 and counting. A day five crowd exceeding day four is unheard of with the Melbourne Cricket Club, who run the MCG, underestimating the number on day five.

They opened Yarra Park outside the ground for general public parking on day five, which is a rarity. But they only had one gate open and it caused a significant traffic choke point prior to play with a number of fans late to get into the ground.

The record numbers follow the huge crowds India attracted at the MCG at the 2022 T20 World Cup when 90,293 saw India play Pakistan and 82,507 watched India play Zimbabwe.

The Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) has always been a highly-anticipated event in the cricketing calendar, and this year was no different. In a historic moment, the all-time attendance record for a Test match in Australia was broken at the MCG during the BGT Boxing Day Test.

Thousands of fans packed into the iconic stadium to witness the thrilling contest between Australia and their opponents, creating an incredible atmosphere that added to the excitement of the match. The record-breaking attendance is a testament to the enduring popularity of Test cricket in Australia and the passion of cricket fans across the country.

The BGT Boxing Day Test at the MCG will go down in history as a memorable occasion, not only for the thrilling on-field action but also for the incredible support from the fans. It was a truly special moment for Australian cricket and a reminder of the unique magic that Test cricket can bring.

  • Nitish Kumar Reddy’s father touches Sunil Gavaskar’s feet at MCG after son’s hundred; here’s what happens next

Nitish Kumar Reddy’s father touches Sunil Gavaskar’s feet at MCG after son’s hundred; here’s what happens next

Nitish Kumar Reddy’s father, Mutyala Reddy, touched legendary Sunil Gavaskar’s feet in an emotional meeting on the sidelines of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) after his son scored a maiden Test ton against Australia on Saturday in the ongoing fourth Test. Along with Mutyala, was his Nitish mother, sister and brother.

In the video that went viral, Mutyala was seen going down on both knees and touched Gavaskar‘s feet before the duo hugged each other. The former India captain also greeted the other members of the Reddy family with folded hands and said “Bless you.”

“You know about the big sacrifices he made (in Nitish’s journey) and because of you I have tears in my eyes. India has found a gem in cricket because of you,” Gavaskar said further in a voice subdued by emotions.

Nitish’s mother, who was emotional too, told Gavaskar that she was still not able to believe that her son was playing at such a big venue and produced such a ‘big innings’.

Starting the day 4 at an overnight score of 105 not out, the 21-year-old Reddy could add just nine runs on Sunday and played a huge role in India cutting the deficit to 105 runs in reply to Australia’s 474. India were all out for 369.

Having scored a string of scores around forty in the first three Tests, Nitish came to bat on Day 3 after the fall of Rishabh Pant with India reeling at 191/6. He lost Ravindra Jadeja coon after before the Andhra Pradesh batter was joined by Washington Sundar as the duo added 127 runs for the eighth wicket to bail India out of the blushes.

Reddy’s hundred bring tears on Shastri’s eyes

Earlier on Saturday, former Indian coach Ravi Shastri too got emotional when Reddy reached his hundred. “More importantly, the way he batted, showcasing his talent and discipline, which is why you and Irfan were speaking (while commentating),” Shastri told Star Sports.

“I was tongue-tied and I had tears in my eyes. I don’t get tears (of joy) in my eyes that easily. I enjoyed watching (Reddy’s innings) yesterday,” Shastri added.

The cricket world was left in awe as Nitish Kumar Reddy’s father touched the feet of legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) after his son’s spectacular hundred. The heartwarming gesture was a moment of pure emotion and respect, showcasing the deep admiration and reverence for the game and its icons.

As the news spread like wildfire across social media platforms, fans and fellow cricketers alike praised the humble act of Nitish Kumar Reddy’s father, highlighting the values of humility and gratitude in the world of sports. Sunil Gavaskar himself was moved by the gesture, expressing his gratitude and appreciation for the touching moment.

The heartwarming incident served as a reminder of the power of sports to bring people together, transcending boundaries and uniting fans in a shared love for the game. It was a testament to the impact and influence of cricketing legends like Sunil Gavaskar, whose legacy continues to inspire generations of cricketers and fans.

In a world filled with competition and rivalry, moments like these remind us of the true spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie that lies at the heart of cricket. Nitish Kumar Reddy’s father’s simple act of reverence touched the hearts of cricket lovers around the world, leaving a lasting impression and a powerful message of respect and admiration for the game and its heroes.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Watch: How Sam Konstas reacted after Virat Kohli’s wicket at the MCG | Cricket News

Watch: How Sam Konstas reacted after Virat Kohli's wicket at the MCG

NEW DELHI: Australia opener Sam Konstas may have declared that Virat Kohli is his favourite player in the world and given the Indian batting superstar the clean chit over his shoulder-bump, but things are different when it comes to on field action.
The first day of the Boxing Day Test between India and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was just not about Konstas’ dazzling debut, but also his on-field confrontation with Kohli.

Sam Konstas on Kohli altercation: ‘I was doing my gloves, he accidentally bumped me’

Virat was fined 20 percent of his match fees and given a demerit point by the ICC for a Level One breach of the ICC code of conduct as a result of that incident.
However, the 19-year-old home debutant downplayed the incident, claiming the Indian superstar had bumped into him by accident.
In the Indian first innings, Virat batted patiently in his 86-ball stay at the crease accumulating 36 runs and looked totally focused to not to fall to the trap outside the off-stump.
There were many instances when Virat left deliveries bowled by Mitchell Starc outside the off-stump and giving the Aussie pacer a smile.
But Virat ran out of patience after his mix-up with Yashasvi Jaiswal that resulted in the Indian opener’s run out for 82.
The Aussies finally had the last laugh as Kohli edged a Scot Bland delivery for wicket-keeper Alex Carey to take a simple catch again losing the game of patience.
And now a video is viral on the internet that shows how Konstas celebrated after the dismissal of the former Indian captain.
In the video, Konstas is showing asking the MCG crowd to cheer on the dismissal, much like Virat does when he asks the crowd to cheer the Indian bowlers.

The Kohli-Konstas on-field rivalry is emblematic of cricket’s beauty-where established stars and young challengers push each other to new heights. This contest isn’t just about skill; it’s a mental battle that keeps fans on the edge of their seats.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy clash between India and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground took an interesting turn when Virat Kohli was dismissed by Sam Konstas. The Australian fast bowler’s reaction to getting the prized wicket was caught on camera and it has been making rounds on social media.

In the video, Sam Konstas can be seen celebrating Kohli’s wicket with great enthusiasm, pumping his fist and letting out a loud roar. The intensity and emotion in Konstas’ reaction truly highlight the significance of getting a player like Kohli out, especially in a high-stakes series like the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Fans of both teams have been sharing the video and discussing Konstas’ passionate celebration. Some have praised his competitive spirit and determination, while others have criticized him for being too aggressive. Regardless of where you stand, there’s no denying that Kohli’s wicket was a crucial moment in the match and Konstas’ reaction captured the intensity of the moment perfectly.

As the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series continues to unfold, it will be interesting to see how the rivalry between India and Australia shapes up and whether we will witness more such moments of high drama and emotion on the cricket field. Stay tuned for more updates and analysis on this epic clash between two cricketing giants.

  • Can India solve the Boland-shaped jigsaw at MCG? – Sports News Portal | Latest Sports Articles

Can India solve the Boland-shaped jigsaw at MCG? – Sports News Portal | Latest Sports Articles

Can India negate Boland’s threat at MCG?

How does Scott Boland go about his business of troubling a truckload of batters in the Sheffield Shield? What is the reason behind his noteworthy record at the MCG, in the longest format of the game? The answer to this vexing question can be found out if you pore through some old videos of Boland bowling in the Sheffield Shield. The Adelaide Oval game between Victoria and South Australia from the 2020-21 season serves as an example. Boland ended up with eight wickets in that match, including six in the second innings.

The second of his six wickets in the second essay tells a story in itself. From slightly wide of the crease, Boland pitched the ball just outside off and it nipped back off the seam considerably. Due to Boland’s near-perfect length for those climes in Australia, Brad Davis was caught on the crease. Not surprisingly, Davis could only edge one to the ‘keeper. Just zoom in on the dismissal further, and the bat was dangling just outside off. A clue that Boland had bowled the right line and length to force the batter into making a mistake.

The wicket of Henry Hunt was not much different, although that delivery might have straightened a little bit on the angle. He followed it up by bowling a peach to remove Harry Nielsen, the left-hand batter. From round the wicket and wide of the crease, he angled one into Nielsen. Nielsen played for the angle, only for the ball to nip away from him and rattle the off-stump.

Boland’s impressive showing at the MCG has been based on the same game plan, including his famous spell of 6 for 7 against England on his Test debut. The best ball of that game-breaking spell was reserved for England’s mainstay, Joe Root. It swung and then nipped away just enough to take the outside edge. Root couldn’t pick the variation as he played down the wrong line. That offering gives you the essence of Boland’s well-rounded quiver for those conditions.

With a front-on action, Boland is set to bowl loads of nip-backers and three-quarter-seam deliveries to the right-hand batters. But he also has the ability to tilt his wrist a tad and move it away from them. With certain actions, it seems easier to pick the variation. Not so with Boland, as there is no real discernible change in his action to pick cues. To make matters worse for the right-hand batter, the tilt of the wrist is negligible and his control is exemplary.

Even though the away-going delivery isn’t his main weapon, it acts as the supplement to the nip-backers, sowing the seeds of doubt in the mind of the right-hand batters. In that context, what could India’s strategy be against Boland in the upcoming MCG Test? One of them could be to try and negate his threat with a left-right combination. Out of his 40 Test wickets, only six have been left-hand batters. If the left-hand batter takes some calculated risks, it could help in disrupting Boland’s lengths.

Boland, who represents Victoria in the Sheffield Shield, has a wealth of experience at the grand theatre of the MCG. He has plucked as many as 117 scalps at an average of 24 there in first-class cricket. Away from home, he may not be that effective. But with the decks in Australia offering a little more zip and bounce, his method is tailor-made for such conditions. With most of the Indian batters struggling for form, they have a formidable task awaiting them at Boland’s happy hunting ground.

India faces a tough challenge as they take on Australia in the second Test match at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The team will have to solve the Boland-shaped jigsaw puzzle to bounce back from their defeat in the first Test.

With the absence of key players like Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami, India’s bowling attack will have to step up and fill the void. The inclusion of Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj in the squad provides some relief, but they will need to perform exceptionally well to contain the Australian batting line-up.

On the other hand, Australia will be looking to continue their dominance after a convincing win in the first Test. The return of David Warner and Will Pucovski will further strengthen their batting order, while the pace trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood will be eager to wreak havoc on the Indian batsmen once again.

Can India solve the Boland-shaped jigsaw at MCG and level the series, or will Australia continue their winning streak? Stay tuned to find out as the action unfolds at the MCG.

Virat Kohli combusts and Steve Smith steps up as India and Australia’s veterans take centre stage at the MCG

It has been 10 years since Australia last beat India in a Test series, home or away.

That series, which Australia took out 2-0 but was relatively close throughout, saw the first official bat-off between two men who would dominate Test cricket for the next decade.

Both Steve Smith and Virat Kohli each made four centuries in that four-Test series. A 26-year-old Kohli finished up with 692 runs at an average of 86.50, while 25-year-old Smith incredibly topped that with 769 runs at 128.16.

That series came just as Joe Root and Kane Williamson were beginning their ascents too, and it had the very tangible feeling of the start of something.

Ten years on and those same two men, Steve Smith and Virat Kohli, are fronting up on the other side of their imperious decades no less essential.

At the MCG in December of 2024, as eyes are naturally drawn to the young men at the opposite end of their careers, Smith and Kohli still hold their country’s fate in their hands.

If this Test might end up deciding the series, the battle within it between Smith and Kohli might end up deciding the match.

And on day two, one rose to the occasion and the other spectacularly imploded.

In the space of about six manic minutes late in the afternoon session, Kohli took all of India’s previous good work and set it on fire, promptly handing Australia back its advantage just when the hosts were starting to wobble.

First there was a run-out, entirely out of the blue as these things often are.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, on 82 and in total command of the Australian attack, hit a ball hard to Pat Cummins at mid-on and immediately set off for a single.

Kohli saw Jaiswal coming but was caught on his heels, promptly turning around to examine the merits of Jaiswal’s decision before looking back to see his partner was already coming.

In that split second, Kohli made the decision that he didn’t think he could get through for a single safely. Whether his assessment was correct — and it wouldn’t have mattered, as Cummins’s throw missed the stumps anyway — it wasn’t his call to make.

It was his job to be backing up and ready for Jaiswal’s call to run, but instead he overruled him and thoroughly barbecued him.

That moment flipped the entire match on its head, and clearly got into Kohli’s. In a textbook case of self-rattling, within minutes Kohli had played the exact nibbling shot outside off stump he had fought all day to avoid and was out caught behind.

Kohli and drama are never far removed. Sometimes he actively seeks it out, as was the case on day one with Sam Konstas, but often his combustible nature means he can’t help but cause the odd explosion.

The chaos of Kohli stood in stark contrast to the calming presence of Smith through the morning session as he professionally set the game up for Australia.

Smith had the advantage of being able to play his hand first, and with a quite sublime sequel to his Brisbane breakthrough made the absolute most of the opportunity.

If at the Gabba Smith was first made to scrap to rediscover his touch, at the MCG it seemed to come as naturally as it did in 2014.

That was the thing about Peak Smudge that often can be forgotten — just how easy and routine he made batting look, even if he did it in an aesthetically unorthodox way.

He had strolled past 50 on day one, then came back out with Pat Cummins on day two and casually clipped off the rest of the runs required for his 34th Test ton. The inevitability of it all was very familiar, terrifyingly so for India.

It was critical for Australia that Smith finish the job in the way that he did, as a strong start to the opening day had waned by the close of play. Had Smith joined the rest of the top four in getting to 50 and getting out, India would have been firmly in the ascendancy.

Instead Smith drove his team forward, ably supported by the free-wheeling tail-end, past 450 and into a wonderfully strong position. It is awfully difficult to lose a Test match from there.

The gauntlet was then thrown down to India’s top order, who had to bat their team out of a hole.

Rohit Sharma decided to kick KL Rahul out of his opening position, only to throw his wicket away with as meek a dismissal as the captain could have mustered, half-heartedly chipping Cummins to Scott Boland at midwicket.

Rahul was one delivery away from seeing India through to tea, but was shocked to discover that particular delivery was a Cummins fireball from the depths of hell.

It must be nice for Cummins that his trademark wicket is an utterly unplayable, grotesquely beautiful delivery that kisses the top of the batter’s off stump. Imagine your speciality being literally the best thing in the world. It’s not really fair.

That brought Kohli to the crease, pairing him with the heir apparent in Jaiswal for a decisive partnership. Australia’s conquerors in Perth were together again, and both had a taste for it.

For a few hours Australia must have suffering from some alarming flashbacks, only for Kohli to turn his back on Jaiswal and change the course of the whole affair.

Australia now must wade through Rishabh Pant and India’s revolving door of all-rounders to put itself in a position to win this fourth Test and take a lead in the series. The pitch and conditions are fine for batting but there is momentum on Australia’s side, and India suddenly look prone to meltdown.

If the Australians do go on with it at the MCG, Smith and Kohli’s role in the result will be unignorable. Just as it was 10 years ago, and just as it will forever be as long as they share a field together.

In a thrilling turn of events at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Virat Kohli’s fiery temper finally boiled over as he combusted during a tense match between India and Australia. The Indian captain, known for his passion and aggression on the field, could not contain his emotions and found himself in hot water with the match officials.

However, as Kohli’s star dimmed, another rose to the occasion – Steve Smith. The Australian veteran, who has had his fair share of controversies in the past, showed his class and skill as he led his team with determination and poise. Smith’s calm and composed demeanor stood in stark contrast to Kohli’s outburst, and he proved why he is considered one of the best in the game.

As India and Australia’s veterans took center stage at the MCG, it was a battle of skill, experience, and leadership. Both Kohli and Smith showcased their talent and leadership abilities, but it was Smith who ultimately came out on top, guiding Australia to a hard-fought victory.

The match was a reminder of the importance of composure and control in high-pressure situations, and both Kohli and Smith provided valuable lessons in how to handle the heat of the moment. As the series continues, fans can expect more fireworks and drama as these two cricketing giants go head-to-head once again.

  • Australia vs India: Steve Smith century puts hosts in control at MCG

Australia vs India: Steve Smith century puts hosts in control at MCG

Steve Smith continued his revival with a magnificent century as he and Australia’s bowlers put the hosts firmly on top against India after day two of the fourth Test in Melbourne.

After ending a run of 26 Test innings without a ton in the third Test in Brisbane, Smith followed up with a belligerent 140 to help Australia post 474 in their first innings.

It was the 34-year-old’s 34th Test century and moved him up to joint seventh on the all-time list, in a five-strong group that includes Brian Lara and Sunil Gavaskar.

Smith’s knock included a crucial 112-run partnership for the seventh wicket with captain Pat Cummins, who hit 49.

Smith was eventually dismissed in bizarre fashion when he charged Akash Deep and the ball hit the pads off an inside edge before rolling into his leg stump.

India skipper Rohit Sharma’s poor run of form with the bat continued when he fell for just three off the bowling of Cummins at the start of India’s reply.

The Australia skipper then bowled KL Rahul with a beauty just before tea to leave India reeling on 51-2.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli steadied the innings with a partnership of 102 before a desperate mix-up saw Jaiswal run out for 82.

Scott Boland then removed Kohli for 36 and Deep for a duck as India limped to 164-5 at the close, still trailing by 310 runs. Before Jaiswal’s dismissal, they had been going along handily at 153-2.

The five-match series is level at 1-1, with both sides looking to win it 3-1 to guarantee a place in the World Test Championship final.

Australia vs India: Steve Smith century puts hosts in control at MCG

In a thrilling day of Test cricket at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Steve Smith’s brilliant century has put Australia in a commanding position against India.

Smith’s masterful innings of 132 not out helped Australia reach 249/5 at stumps on day two, giving them a lead of 82 runs over India. The former captain’s knock was filled with exquisite strokeplay and impeccable timing, as he took control of the game and frustrated the Indian bowlers.

India had earlier been bowled out for 167 in their first innings, with Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc wreaking havoc with the new ball. However, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin fought back valiantly with the ball to keep Australia in check.

But it was Smith’s dominance that stole the show, as he batted with poise and determination to steer Australia towards a substantial lead. His partnership with Cameron Green, who chipped in with a valuable 45, was crucial in building a solid foundation for the hosts.

As the match heads into day three, all eyes will be on Smith as he looks to continue his fine form and guide Australia to a commanding position. With the pitch starting to offer assistance to the spinners, India will have their work cut out as they try to claw their way back into the game.
