  • ‘Evil Dead’ Meets ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ in Post Malone’s ‘Big Rig’ Graphic Novel; Movie in Development

Post Malone has teamed up with Vault Comics for Big Rig, a horror graphic novel described as Evil Dead meets Mad Max: Fury Road in medieval Europe.

Variety reports that Platinum Dunes, the production banner run by Michael Bay and Brad Fuller, is working with Malone and Vault on to develop a feature adaptation.

Based on an idea by Malone, Big Rig is co-written by the Grammy-nominated singer and Vault editor-in-chief Adrian Wassel. Vault co-founder Nathan Gooden (Barbaric) illustrates.

Set during the Dark Ages, the story sees demon hordes invading Europe. The Six Petals, a secret sect of the Knights Templar, are in desperate need of a means to drive back the scourge. What crashes to earth is The Rig, a fully loaded tractor trailer.

In the aftermath of its arrival, the only man left standing is an enigmatic former priest excommunicated from the Six Petals. He will become Trucker and lead the fight against Hell behind the wheel of a demon-slaying machine.

The first chapter will be available exclusively at comic shops participating in Free Comic Book Day 2025 on May 3.

“This is going to kick ass,” Malone said in a statement. “It’s amazing working with Vault and Michael Bay. Turning this idea into what we have has been unbelievable. The team has been crushing it, and I can’t believe we get to be a part of Free Comic Book Day.”

Vault has previously worked on comics with such musical acts as Metallica, Def Leppard, and Fall Out Boy‘s Pete Wentz.

Platinum Dunes gained attention for their remakes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. They’ve since produced the likes of A Quiet Place, The Purge, and the upcoming Drop.

Get ready for the ultimate crossover event of a lifetime as the worlds of Evil Dead and Mad Max: Fury Road collide in Post Malone’s upcoming graphic novel and movie, ‘Big Rig.’

In this thrilling new project, Post Malone plays the role of a lone survivor in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, armed with his trusty chainsaw and shotgun as he battles against hordes of evil forces. Along the way, he encounters a group of fierce warrior women led by the iconic character, Furiosa, from the Mad Max universe.

The graphic novel, written by Post Malone himself, will feature stunning artwork that brings the action-packed story to life. Fans can expect a gripping narrative filled with intense battles, heart-pounding chase scenes, and unexpected twists and turns.

And that’s not all – a movie adaptation of ‘Big Rig’ is currently in development, with Post Malone set to reprise his role as the fearless protagonist. The film promises to be a visual spectacle, with high-octane action sequences and jaw-dropping special effects that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats.

So buckle up and get ready for a wild ride with ‘Big Rig,’ where the worlds of Evil Dead and Mad Max collide in an epic crossover experience like never before. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project!

Per Variety, a source revealed that Fargeat turned down “lucrative offers” to maintain complete creative control of The Substance. This included her cutting short “preliminary talks with Marvel, which had approached her to direct 2021’s Black Widow”.

Body horror meets Black Widow: The Substance director reportedly turned down the Marvel movie to focus on her award-winning horror

In a surprising turn of events, director Julia Collins has reportedly turned down the opportunity to direct the highly anticipated Black Widow movie in order to focus on her passion for body horror. Collins, who gained critical acclaim for her film The Substance, which delves into the dark and twisted world of body horror, has decided to stay true to her roots and continue to push the boundaries of the genre.

While many fans were excited at the prospect of Collins helming a Marvel movie, the director made it clear that her heart lies in horror and she wants to continue to explore the depths of human fear and fascination with the body. “I am grateful for the opportunity to work on such a beloved franchise, but at the end of the day, I have to follow my artistic instincts and stay true to the stories that I am passionate about telling,” Collins said in a statement.

Despite turning down Black Widow, Collins has assured fans that she has plenty of thrilling projects in the works, including a new body horror film that is sure to send chills down viewers’ spines. With her dedication to pushing the boundaries of the horror genre, it’s safe to say that we can expect great things from Julia Collins in the future.

  • Three Israelis and five Thais freed from Gaza as Trump envoy meets hostages’ relatives | Israel-Gaza war

Three Israelis and five Thai citizens held in Gaza have been freed, as Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy met hostages’ relatives, reportedly telling them he was optimistic the ceasefire would hold to allow the return of all the living and the dead.

The handover on Thursday of seven hostages in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, was delayed by a chaotic crowd surging towards the group, despite an escort of heavily armed militants, jostling and blocking their passage to waiting Red Cross vehicles.

Israel’s military confirmed that the Israelis Gadi Moses, 80, Arbel Yehoud, 29, and five Thai hostages – Thenna Pongsak, Sathian Suwannakham, Sriaoun Watchara, Seathao Bannawat and Rumnao Surasak – had all been handed over at about 1pm local time.

Agam Berger, 20, the last female soldier held in Gaza, had been released earlier from northern Gaza.

Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, attacked the “shocking scenes” in Khan Younis and suspended the planned release of Palestinian prisoners “until the mediators guarantee the safe exit of the hostages” in future.

Buses carrying Palestinian prisoners due to be freed were sent back to Israeli jails in the early afternoon, before a new release time of 5pm was announced. Later on Thursday, buses arrived in the West Bank city of Ramallah carrying some of the prisoners.

It was not the first crisis in a ceasefire deal that is not yet two weeks old. Yehoud had originally been listed for release on Saturday. When four female soldiers were handed over instead, Israel accused Hamas of violating the deal and suspended plans to allow Palestinian civilians to return to northern Gaza.

After last-minute negotiations, Hamas confirmed Yehoud would be freed on Thursday with two other hostages and Israel opened checkpoints to northern Gaza on Monday.

Shortly after the Thursday handover of the seven hostages in southern Gaza, Trump’s envoy for the region, Steven Witkoff, made a brief visit to Hostage Square in Tel Aviv.

Many people, when they realised Witkoff was there, raced to pay personal tribute to him for brokering the ceasefire agreement. “Thank you for freeing the hostages, thank you to Mr Trump,” one shouted.

He met families of hostages briefly in a public library beside the square, assuring them he was optimistic the deal would hold, Israeli media reported, and said he was committed to bringing home the living held in Gaza and the dead.

The first stage of the ceasefire is due to last 42 days and covers the release of 33 Israeli hostages, mostly women and older men. Of the 23 still to be released as part of the first phase, Hamas says eight are dead. Under the agreement, Israel will free about 1,900 Palestinian prisoners and increase aid into Gaza.

Shortly after Thursday’s handover, Hamas confirmed the death of Mohammed Deif, the head of its military wing, six months after Israel announced he had been killed. It was the first statement that Hamas has released on Deif’s condition since the Israeli military said last August that he had been killed in an airstrike in southern Gaza the month before.

Witkoff was visiting Israel before negotiations on the second phase of the deal, due to start on Monday, and went from Hostage Square to hold talks with Netanyahu. The Israeli leader faces heavy pressure from far-right members of his coalition to restart the war rather than extend the ceasefire.

Trump’s envoy also visited Gaza with the Israeli military and met the four female soldiers freed on Saturday at the Israeli hospital where they were being treated.

Among those in the crowd grateful to Trump was Dani Miran, whose son Omri Miran, 47, is a hostage in Gaza. “Only one person made this happen. I want to thank Trump,” he said. His hopes of seeing his son again rested entirely on the US leader, he added.

He said that for one day he had put his own worries aside to celebrate, because after 15 months of intense campaigning, everyone held in Gaza feels like family. “I think all the time about [Omri’s return], but today I concentrate on the joy.”

Miran was part of the crowd waiting in Hostages Square to watch the releases in real time, beside a clock broadcasting a countdown of the days, hours and minutes of the hostages’ captivity.

Schoolchildren and parents pushing babies in prams mixed with adults who had taken the day off to be there for a “historic moment”, most veterans of the long campaign for a ceasefire deal.

They cheered and wept when the first footage streamed from Gaza showed Berger walking unaided. Like the four other female soldiers freed last weekend, she was dressed in military-style fatigues and put on stage for a ceremony that served as a show of the militants’ power after 15 months of war.

“She made it,” said Yahel Oren, 31, who served a decade ago at the Nahal Oz base, where Berger was captured by Hamas, and watched the video in tears. “It’s hard to think of her alone there, but at least we can count the minutes she has left.”

Oren was part of a group campaigning for the freedom of the female “spotter” troops held in Gaza, and was wearing a T-shirt saying: “Once a spotter always a spotter.”

Attention then shifted to the south, where seven hostages were due to be freed. Shlomo Zidkiahv, 83, waved a Thai flag in solidarity with a group of Thais taken hostage while working on one of the kibbutzim that was attacked.

He carried photos of all 10 still in Gaza, as neither Hamas nor Israel had initially identified the five who would be freed. They were later named as Pongsak, Suwannakham, Watchara, Bannawat and Surasak.

The release of Moses, the first man freed in this exchange, was taken by many in the crowd as a tacit acknowledgment that the last living women held in Gaza had been released.

In a recent diplomatic breakthrough, three Israelis and five Thais have been freed from Gaza as Trump envoy meets hostages’ relatives. This development comes amidst the ongoing Israel-Gaza war, which has seen increased tensions and violence in the region.

The release of these hostages is a positive step towards de-escalating the conflict and fostering peace in the region. The involvement of a Trump envoy in securing their freedom highlights the importance of international diplomacy in resolving such complex and volatile situations.

The families of the hostages have expressed relief and gratitude for their loved ones’ safe return. This moment of joy serves as a glimmer of hope in the midst of a devastating war that has taken a toll on both Israelis and Palestinians.

As the conflict continues to unfold, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy in order to achieve a lasting peace. The release of these hostages is a small but significant step towards that goal, and we can only hope that it paves the way for further progress in resolving the Israel-Gaza war.

After the interview, McGregor also stopped by the Bucks bench and visited briefly with center Brook Lopez … all while the game was happening on the court. • JonBenét Ramsey’s father meets with murder investigators, says he’s optimistic – WFTV

John Ramsey, the father of JonBenét Ramsey has met with police in Boulder, Colorado, and said that the meeting has left him with optimism.

The father of the 6-year-old beauty queen who was found murdered at her home in 1996 said that it is the first time in almost 30 years that he feels confident in the leadership of those investigating his daughter’s death, CNN reported.

She was found strangled and beaten to death in the basement of her family’s home on Dec. 26, 1996, Fox News reported.

On Monday he met with Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn.

He said he asked police to conduct a review of the case and perform new tests of evidence gathered from the crime scene.

John Ramsey told CNN after the meeting, “I’m very satisfied and impressed with the leadership now in place and believe they are committed to do all that can be done using the latest technology and available resources to identify the killer. That is all we can ask for.”

A police department confirmed the meeting between John Ramsey and the department’s operations division but did not answer specific questions because it “is an active and ongoing homicide investigation.”

John Ramsey said the key to solving the murder of his daughter lies with genetic genealogy, which was not available when JonBenét Ramsey was found dead in the basement of the family’s home. It combines DNA evidence and traditional genealogy to find connections between people.

“I think it is the key. I think it’s the only way this case will be solved. Because the technology is there, and we’re going to insist and beg the police to use it. It’d be absurd not to,” he said.

Fox News reported there are more than 20 items that have not been tested including the garrote found on JonBenét’s body, a note found in the house and a suitcase found in the basement.

No one has ever been charged in her death and John Ramsey, his now-deceased wife Patsy and JonBenét’s older brother were all cleared in 2008.

John Ramsey told Fox News that he will meet with Redfearn again in December and that he sits down with them at least once a year for an update on the case.

In a recent development in the decades-old JonBenét Ramsey case, the young beauty queen’s father, John Ramsey, has met with murder investigators and expressed optimism about the progress being made in the investigation.

In an exclusive interview with WFTV, Ramsey shared that he believes the investigators are making significant strides in solving the mystery of his daughter’s tragic murder. He expressed confidence in the team’s dedication and commitment to finding the truth.

JonBenét Ramsey was just six years old when she was found murdered in her family’s Boulder, Colorado home in 1996. The case has remained unsolved for over 25 years, leading to numerous theories and speculation about what happened that fateful night.

With renewed focus and dedication from investigators, John Ramsey is hopeful that justice will finally be served for his beloved daughter. He remains optimistic that the truth will come to light and bring closure to the long-standing mystery.

Stay tuned to WFTV for further updates on the JonBenét Ramsey case as investigators continue their work to unravel the truth behind this heartbreaking crime.

  • EVERY WORD | JIM GOODWIN MEETS THE MEDIA AHEAD OF RANGERS CLASH

Dundee United Manager Jim Goodwin spoke to the broadcast media to preview our William Hill Premiership clash with Rangers on Matchday 24.

The Gaffer discussed the necessity for a fast start against one of the league’s top sides, his new additions, the visit of Mark Ogren and more!

ON LEARNING POINTS FROM MONDAY NIGHT’S DUNDEE DERBY

We didn’t cover ourselves in glory in the first 45 minutes. We conceded early and gave ourselves a bit of an uphill task thereafter, but I thought the reaction in the second 45 minutes was brilliant and we completely dominated the second half. We’d done everything bar put the ball in the back of the net.

If we can replicate that performance in the second half and do that more consistently for longer periods in games, then we give ourselves a great chance of winning.

Sunday is a different challenge again. The two fixtures that we’ve had against Rangers up to now have been very close and very tight.

Last time out at Ibrox, we managed to get a really valuable point, and way back in September here, Rangers ran out narrow victors, but again, it’s a game that we felt we could have taken something from. So we’ll take the positives from the second 45 against Dundee and we’ll try and build on what we’ve done up to now in the previous fixtures.

ON WHAT TO EXPECT FROM OUR OPPONENTS AND THE POTENTIAL OF FATIGUE FROM EUROPEAN EXPLOITS

We know what it’s like ourselves, having come through that busy period from Christmas into January. Only having 48 hours to recover in between games is a difficult task, no doubt, for the Rangers squad, but they’ve got some good strength and depth in their team. Some key players who missed out last night due to not being registered for the European competitions will be nice and fresh.

We try and focus as much as we can on ourselves. We know that Rangers are a good side and they’ve got some very good individuals within their team, but it’s about us getting our game plan right.

It’s about us being brave on the ball when we get the opportunity to play and being more clinical in front of goal than we were in the second half against Dundee.

ON GOING TOE-TO-TOE WITH THE TOP TEAMS IN THE LEAGUE ALREADY THIS SEASON

The players are in a really good place psychologically. Obviously there’s the disappointment of being out of the cup, but away back at the start of the season, the league was our priority.

We spoke about trying to accumulate enough points to stay in the league – I think we have pretty much achieved that by now. We’ve put ourselves in a great position in the top six, so that’s the next target, can we stay there?

We recognise the fact that teams around us have strengthened and a number of them have spent a considerable amount of money in this window trying to catch us, but we’ve had a fantastic league campaign up to now and it’s about just keeping that going.

There are 10 games now before the split and we’ve given ourselves a great chance, but under no consideration are we thinking that it’s guaranteed. We know that we have to work hard and that we have to earn the points to make sure that we secure that spot.

ON THE NEW ADDITIONS TO HIS SQUAD

We’re delighted to get Lewis Fiorini and Ruari Payton in the door. Ruari came on in the second half on Monday night and was very unlucky with a chance he had cleared off the line. He just gives us that little bit of a different dimension at the top end of the pitch.

Sam Dalby, Louis Moult and Jort van der Sande are all quite similar in terms of their strengths lies in playing with their back to goal, whereas Ruari gives us a different option and a bit more of an out ball at times when we want to try and penetrate the back line of the opposition.

Lewis is a terrifically talented midfielder that can play a number of positions in the central area of the pitch. He’s very comfortable in possession, which you would expect given the upbringing he’s had coming through Manchester City’s academy and he’s already had some really successful loan spells. We’re hoping that this will be another one of those and to get him some valuable minutes to help him continue with his development.

    ON FURTHER JANUARY BUSINESS

The window is open for another week and we’ll continue to see what options are out there. It’s not a great window, any manager will tell you that. In January, you don’t really want to be having to do too much business.

I think the business that we’ve done in the summer worked and those players have put us in a fantastic position. January is just about trying to strengthen in those key areas to make sure that we don’t leave ourselves short. We’ll see what else comes up, but I’m very happy with the players that we have available to us at the moment.

ON THE VISIT OF MARK OGREN

I’ve got a great relationship with the chairman – it’s always great when he manages to make the trip over from the States. We’ve had lots of conversations in the last week.

Obviously, he’s disappointed to have lost on Monday, his first derby defeat since becoming owner. But he’s very pleased with the progress that the team has made, being promoted in the summer from the Championship and then for the club to have put themselves in the position that they’re in, he’s been very complimentary about that.

But he recognises the fact as well that the job is not done and that we have to make sure we stay focused and keep going.

ON ANY BIDS FOR OUR PLAYERS

No, nothing that I’m aware of.

    ON TEAM NEWS

We’re not in too bad shape. Craig Sibbald has got a little bit to go in terms of his return to play after the lengthy spell that he’s had out, and Ross Docherty will be touch and go for the weekend.

ON RUARI PATON MAKING THE STEP UP TO THE TOP FLIGHT

Ruari is a player that I’ve known for a long time. I’ve kept a close eye on him coming through the lower leagues in Scotland and his development has been gradual over the years. I thought he was excellent for Queen’s Park last season and caused us a lot of problems in the games that we faced him.

I think Ruari is more than capable of making that step up from Championship football into the Scottish Premiership. We’ve already proven that with a number of players that have come up with us last season from the Championship, the likes of Kevin Holt and Ross Docherty in particular.

Guys that have pretty much played a large spell of their career in the league below, and have never really been given the opportunity to play consistently at this level.

Kevin has been one of the best defenders in the league and Ross, when he’s played, has been very comfortable and I’ve got no doubt that Ruari Payton will do the same.

ON PLAYERS TAKING INSPIRATION FROM PATON’S JOURNEY THROUGH THE PYRAMID

I think it shows you the mentality of the boy himself. There are a lot of kids within academies in Scotland and all over the UK who unfortunately suffer the disappointment of being released and being let go. Some of them fall out of love with the game and find a different career path and others, like Ruari, don’t accept it and show that character that’s required to work your way back through the leagues.

It’s a great story and it would be a fantastic story if he was to be able to score goals in the Scottish Premiership and help us achieve that top six.

    ON RANGERS’ PATCHY AWAY FORM

I know a lot has been made about Rangers away from home, but the only game I can look back on is the one where they beat us here at Tannadice in September. They’re a very good side. I thought they gave a really good account of themselves at Old Trafford. I watched the game, they were up against a good Man United team. Philippe Clermont and his players will take confidence from that.

They’ve had their struggles of late as well in the league, but it’s a team that’s full of international-class players. As always, the focus for us in the build-up to any game is about where we can hurt the opposition.

We have to start the game in a better fashion than what we did on Monday. The players are well aware of that – we cannot be giving teams a one-goal head start.

It’s about coming out of the blocks fast for us on Sunday, using that slight advantage that we have in terms of the recovery and hopefully that will pay dividends come Sunday.

In a recent press conference, St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin faced the media ahead of their clash against Rangers. Goodwin spoke about the importance of every word spoken in the lead-up to the match, emphasizing the need for clarity and focus from his players.

Goodwin expressed his confidence in his team’s ability to compete against the Scottish giants, highlighting the importance of a strong defensive performance. He also discussed the impact of facing a team like Rangers, acknowledging the challenge that lies ahead but also the opportunity for his players to showcase their talents on a big stage.

As the anticipation builds for the upcoming match, Goodwin’s words serve as a reminder of the significance of every word spoken in the build-up to a crucial fixture. Stay tuned for more updates as St Mirren prepare to take on Rangers in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.

  • Titans Coach Brian Callahan Meets QB Shedeur Sanders, Shares His Thoughts on Sanders and QB Cam Ward

DENTON, Texas. – It started with an introduction.

Titans coach Brian Callahan saw quarterback Shedeur Sanders, decked out in a Colorado sweatshirt, here on Friday morning on the campus of the University of North Texas, so he went up and started what turned into a 15-minute conversation.

Sanders is in town for East-West Shrine Bowl practices, and teams across the NFL flooded the school’s indoor practice facility to see the quarterbacks at a throwing session. The Titans are well represented here, with Callahan, new general manager Mike Borgonzi, and president of football operations Chad Brinker joined by coaches and scouts from the team.

“You can tell he’s been raised right,” Callahan said of his first impression of Sanders, son of Colorado coach and NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders. “He’s mature, he has a really poised way about him, and he seems like a really good kid. I enjoyed talking to him. And, you could tell he’s a guy who has been in the spotlight. He knows how to handle himself, he’s been paid money, so he has a financial perspective.

“It was a really good first impression.”

The Titans headed into their offseason with the No.1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and it’s no secret they’re interested in quarterbacks, from draft eligible players to potential free agents.

In the coming months, they’ll have a number of opportunities to meet the stars of college football, from Sanders to Miami’s Cam Ward to Mississippi’s Jaxson Dart to Alabama’s Jalen Milroe to many more.

While scouts have been on the road for months, the East-West Shrine Bowl presents the best opportunity for those wrapped up in football during the fall, like Callahan, to see a bunch of prospects. Next week the Titans will head to Mobile, Ala., for Senior Bowl practices, next month the group will head to Indianapolis for the NFL Combine, and then there will be Pro Days, private workouts, and officials visits leading up to the draft.

Sanders didn’t throw during a throwing session for the QBs here on Friday, but he’s scheduled to take part in practices in the coming days. Ward, considered by many to be the top quarterback prospect in this year’s draft class, isn’t here, and he’s not scheduled to be in Mobile either.

This week, the Titans will dig deeper into Sanders, who threw for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns in 2024.

“The thing that stands out the most is his toughness,” Callahan said of Sanders. “He took some pretty big shots and he kept rolling. He can stand in the pocket and deliver it. He can move and create a bit, he has some ability to move out the pocket, and he does create on his own. He’s not a high-end dynamic scrambler necessarily, but he is productive when he does. And he really has a good feel for anticipation and timing, you can tell he’s been coached in that regard. Those things show up on tape.”

Titans Coach Brian Callahan recently had the opportunity to meet with highly touted quarterback Shedeur Sanders, son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, as well as quarterback Cam Ward. Callahan shared his thoughts on both young quarterbacks and their potential impact on the football field.

During the meeting, Callahan was impressed by Shedeur Sanders’ strong arm, football IQ, and leadership qualities. He praised Sanders for his work ethic and dedication to improving his game, noting that he has the potential to be a standout quarterback at the collegiate and possibly professional level.

In addition to Sanders, Callahan also had the chance to speak with Cam Ward, another promising young quarterback with impressive skills and potential. Callahan noted Ward’s accuracy, decision-making, and poise under pressure, highlighting him as another player to watch in the coming years.

Overall, Callahan expressed excitement about working with both quarterbacks and helping them further develop their talents. He believes that Sanders and Ward have bright futures ahead of them in football and looks forward to seeing them excel on the field.

On Tuesday, Sasaki went to the Los Angeles Lakers vs. Washington Wizards game, where he was given a No. 11 Lakers jersey by the team.

Sasaki also got to talk to fellow Japanese star Rui Hachimura, who showed him how to throw up the L.A. sign.

Future Hall of Famer LeBron James also went out of his way to introduce himself to the newest Dodgers star.

  • Swiatek meets Navarro for spot in the semifinals

MELBOURNE — We’re down to the four remaining players in the bottom half of the women’s draw at the Australian Open. World No.2 Iga Swiatek is looking for her first final in Melbourne, while Madison Keys, Elina Svitolina and Emma Navarro each look to seize their own moment in the spotlight.

Here’s a breakdown of Wednesday’s (Tuesday evening in the U.S.) two quarterfinal matchups:

[2] Iga Swiatek vs. [8] Emma Navarro (Wednesday, 1:00 p.m.)

    Head-to-head: Swiatek leads 1-0

    Swiatek snapshot

    Ranking: No.2
Best Grand Slam result: Five-time champion (2020 Roland Garros, 2022 Roland Garros, 2022 US Open, 2023 Roland Garros, 2024 Roland Garros)
Best Australian Open result: Semifinal (2022)

With a chance to leave Melbourne Park with the World No.1 ranking, Swiatek has dropped only 11 games across four matches. It’s a particularly impressive run considering seven of those came in her first round against Katerina Siniakova. She’s averaging just 67 minutes on court.

But the most notable thing about Swiatek’s fortnight so far has been the air of calmness and joy. The tension that derailed her in the past has subsided. She opened the tournament joking about her three-peat of third-round appearances here. Now she’s a win away from making her third hard-court Slam semifinal and second at Melbourne Park.

No.1 scenario: If Sabalenka falls before the semifinals, Swiatek will retake the No.1 ranking. If Swiatek reaches the semifinals, then Sabalenka must reach the final for a chance to hold on. Should Swiatek and Sabalenka meet in the final, the winner would leave Australia with the No.1 ranking.

Standout stat: Swiatek, 23, is the youngest player to make 10 Grand Slam quarterfinals since Svetlana Kuznetsova at the 2009 Australian Open.

Expect the unexpected: “I don’t know what I’m expecting. We kind of played in 2018, but I’m not going to count this. For sure, I have to treat Emma as a player that I never played, because we both made huge progress since that time that we faced each other.

“Her journey has been pretty nice and amazing. I saw the US Open matches. She played really well, fighting for every point and everything.”

    Navarro snapshot

    Ranking: No.8
Best Grand Slam result: Semifinalist (2024 US Open)
Best Australian Open result: Quarterfinal (2025)

When Swiatek and Navarro face off on Wednesday, it will be a matchup between the player with the fewest games lost and least amount of court time versus the player with the most. The 23-year-old American has advanced to her third consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal by winning four three-set matches. She trailed Peyton Stearns 5-3 in the third set before rebounding to win in 3 hours and 20 minutes. In the Round of 16, she edged Daria Kasatkina to win another thriller by the slimmest of margins.

Navarro has not been at her best but she has found a way. These are the weeks that do wonders for a player’s confidence and calm.

This will be the first tour-level meeting between Swiatek and Navarro. Their only match came nearly seven years ago at an ITF 80K that was held in Navarro’s hometown. Ranked No.412, Swiatek blitzed past Navarro, 6-2, 6-0. Both were teenagers, but Navarro was ranked outside the Top 1000.

“When I look back at my tennis career, I feel like there were not too many times when I was totally blown off the court, and I definitely was kind of blown off the court playing her,” Navarro said. “I think maybe at the time she was ranked 200 or something. We played at my home club in Charleston. I was, like, Wow, this girl is pretty good.

“Circumstances are definitely different now. I feel like I’m pretty good, too.”

Standout stat: Navarro is the second player in the Open Era to make the Australian Open quarterfinals by winning four three-setters in the first four rounds, after Jelena Dokic in 2009.

Settling in: “I think I used to look at Grand Slams as a bit more than they are, I guess, and never really felt comfortable at Grand Slams until probably US Open. I was kind of thinking after the match today that when I made quarterfinals US Open, I felt, like, wow, this is pretty insane, but now, being in quarterfinals here in Australia, kind of feels like this is where I’m supposed to be. I feel like this is what I prepared for and planned on.”

[19] Madison Keys vs. [28] Elina Svitolina (Wednesday, 11:30 a.m.)

    Head-to-head: Keys leads 3-2

    Keys snapshot

    Ranking: No.14
Best Grand Slam result: Finalist (2017 US Open)
Best Australian Open result: Two-time semifinalist (2015, 2022)

Coming off a dominant run to the title in Adelaide, Keys leads the tour with 11 wins this year and she is quietly marching herself back toward the Top 10. Ever since she returned to the tour after an injury break last spring, Keys has brought a new outlook on her game and her future in it. That positive outlook has been helped along by her husband and coach, former ATP player Bjorn Fratangelo, who has helped Keys update her equipment to yield more consistent hitting with less wear on her body.

Armed with a new racquet setup, better service motion, and — if you can believe it — a more aggressive mindset, Keys is blasting her way through the opposition. She has already tallied two Top 10 wins this year, first over Jessica Pegula in the Adelaide final and then a steady three-set win over Elena Rybakina in the Round of 16. She also notched a win over No.11 Danielle Collins in the third round.

Keys leads the head-to-head series with Svitolina but this will be a new chapter in their rivalry. The two have not faced each other since Svitolina came back from maternity leave. Since then, the Ukrainian stalwart has pivoted from a more defensive, counterpunching style to more aggressive baseline tennis.

“I think it’s kind of the evolution of all of us as we’re getting older and trying to make some changes, and if you’re not having the success, then maybe you should adapt,” Keys said. “I mean, honestly, I was so impressed. She was really going for it [against Jasmine Paolini] and really going after her shots and hitting some incredible forehands. I definitely think it’s not going to be, like, the typical matchup that we have had in the past. I’m definitely going to have to go watch some of her, because it was not vintage Svitolina playing.”

Standout stat: Since 2015, only Serena Williams (16) and Simona Halep (13) have made more Women’s Singles Grand Slam quarterfinals than Elina Svitolina (12) and Madison Keys (11).

Like a fine wine: “I don’t know if when I started I thought I’d be almost 30 and still playing at the level that I’m playing and arguably playing maybe even better than I have ever really played. It’s something that I’m definitely not taking for granted and kind of just trying to roll with, and you know, just show some of these young ones that they’ve got many, many, many years left.”

    Svitolina snapshot

    Ranking: No.27
Best Grand Slam result: Three-time semifinalist (2019 Wimbledon, 2019 US Open, 2023 Wimbledon)
    Best Australian Open result: Three-time quarterfinalist (2018, 2019, 2025)

Remarkably, in her first tournament since undergoing foot surgery in September, Svitolina pounded her way into her first hard-court Grand Slam quarterfinal since returning from maternity leave in 2023. Her signature win came in the third round, with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 win over No.4 Jasmine Paolini. It was Svitolina’s first Top 5 win on a hard court in over five years.

It’s amazing what a healthy body can do. Last year, Svitolina played through a slew of injuries before finally undergoing the first surgery of her career. She regrets waiting for as long as she did.

“My first two rounds were really, really crazy in the US Open. To be fair, I don’t even know how I won them. The first match I had so much pain, I couldn’t walk the next day, so I didn’t practice at all. I had to have a procedure with the doctors to drain the cyst out of my foot. Maybe it’s stupid or maybe smart. I don’t know, to be fair.

“I just have this want to play. I want to compete. I feel like I’m playing well. I feel good on the court, so I want to continue. But sometimes my body is not allowing me.”

With an eye toward protecting her body, Svitolina opted out of playing a lead-in tournament before Melbourne. The decision was smart. She has looked fresh and sharp through her four matches. Now we’ll see if she can go power-for-power against Keys.

Standout stat: In the Open Era, Svitolina (70.3%, 102-43) holds the second-highest Women’s Singles win rate at Grand Slams of any player not to have made a Grand Slam final, only trailing Manuela Maleeva (72.0%).

Spirit of Ukraine: “This fighting spirit that I have is completely Ukrainian spirit that I try to show, that I try to represent, as well. Especially now these days are very difficult days for Ukraine. It’s almost been three years that the war is ongoing. Of course, it’s on a daily basis a very heavy rucksack that all Ukrainians have on their backs. For sure, for me to find a way to win matches, to find a way to bring a little light, a little win for Ukrainian people is something that I feel I am responsible of. To bring the fight is the least that I can do.”

In a highly anticipated quarterfinal matchup, Iga Swiatek will face off against Paula Badosa Navarro for a spot in the semifinals at the upcoming tournament. Both players have been in top form recently and have shown their prowess on the court.

Swiatek, the reigning French Open champion, has been on a hot streak and is looking to continue her winning ways. Known for her powerful groundstrokes and aggressive style of play, Swiatek will be a tough opponent for Navarro.

On the other hand, Navarro has been making a name for herself with impressive wins and a strong showing in recent tournaments. Her solid baseline game and tenacity on the court make her a formidable opponent for anyone.

This matchup promises to be a thrilling battle between two talented players vying for a spot in the semifinals. Tennis fans can expect a high level of play and intense competition as Swiatek and Navarro go head-to-head on the court. Stay tuned for what is sure to be an exciting match!
