When will all the snow and ice melt in Tallahassee?
Warming temperatures and abundant sunlight — ice and snow’s biggest enemies — should melt most if not all of the frozen precipitation that fell on Tallahassee by the end of today or Friday.
About 2 inches of sleet mixed with snow fell on the capital city Tuesday night and Wednesday, covering main arteries and neighborhood roads alike. Much of it melted away on major roadways, though numerous slick spots remained from overnight refreezing. That kept major arteries like I-10 closed Thursday morning and led to a new list of closures as first responders redirected traffic around iced over roads.
Still there were signs of life returning to normal. The Tallahassee International airport reopened hours ahead of its first afternoon flights.
“We had quite a bit of melting (Wednesday), and we’re expected to hit the upper 30s, low 40s today,” said Christian Oliver, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Tallahassee. “So most of that remaining ice on roads should be mostly cleared by the end of today.”
The Florida Department of Transportation shut down a long stretch of Interstate 10, from the Alabama/Florida state line all the way to Gadsden County, on Wednesday night because of unsafe driving conditions. Portions of State Road 20 were also closed.
“This morning, nearly 200 miles of the interstate remained closed, although officials anticipate conditions will improve as the sun rises,” Leon County Administrator Vince Long said Thursday in an email to commissioners.
Long added that the county is still urging drivers to be cautious on the roads, in keeping with Weather Service guidance.
Oliver said snow and ice on shaded streets — including Tallahassee’s beloved canopy roads — will take a bit longer to melt. The same goes for sidewalks, driveways and yards.
Although overnight lows will remain in the lower to mid 20s through Saturday, daytime highs will improve from the mid-40s on Friday to the upper 50s by Sunday.
“It’s hard to say” when 100% of the ice will be gone, Oliver said.
“But definitely by this weekend,” he said.
