Tom Izzo has been at the helm for 30 years now, and as he closes in on Bobby Knight for the all-time Big Ten wins record. I thought we should look back at some of Izzo’s most memorable Big Ten wins.
Tom Izzo earned his first Big Ten victory in his first game of the league schedule during the 1995-96 season. It even came against the great Bobby Knight and his vaunted Hoosiers.
2. Big Ten win No. 19 at No. 5 Purdue (Dec. 30, 1997)
Izzo’s 1997-98 squad kicked off their run for his first Big Ten regular season title by going on the road to a tough Mackey Arena, and best Gene Keady’s top-five-ranked Boilermaker team. Mateen Cleaves begins his run towards player of the year in the Big Ten.
3. Big Ten win No. 30 vs. No. 22 Michigan (Feb. 17, 1998)
Cleaves and the Spartans helped deliver Izzo his first win over rival Michigan. Michigan State was able to escape with an 80-75 victory over No. 22-ranked Michigan.
4. Big Ten win No. 50 vs. Northwestern (Jan. 22, 2000)
Izzo scored Big Ten win No. 50 against the Wildcats, as the Spartans continued their climb towards the 2000 national title.
5. Big Ten win No. 59 vs. Michigan (March 4, 2000)
A record-breaking Senior Day as Mateen Cleaves, AJ Granger, and Morris Peterson said farewell in a 114-63 route.
As Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo continues to climb the ranks of Big Ten coaching legends, it’s worth taking a look back at some of his most memorable conference wins. With each victory, Izzo inches closer to surpassing the legendary Bobby Knight’s record for most conference wins in Big Ten history. Here are a few of Izzo’s standout victories that have helped solidify his place among the all-time greats in the Big Ten:
1. Michigan State vs. Indiana (2000): In a highly anticipated matchup between two powerhouse programs, Izzo’s Spartans emerged victorious with a 73-71 win over Knight’s Hoosiers. This win showcased Izzo’s ability to outcoach one of the greatest minds in college basketball history.
2. Michigan State vs. Wisconsin (2012): In a hard-fought battle that went into overtime, Izzo’s Spartans came out on top with a 63-60 victory over the Badgers. This win highlighted Izzo’s knack for making crucial adjustments and inspiring his team to come out on top in close games.
3. Michigan State vs. Ohio State (2015): Facing off against a tough Ohio State team led by Thad Matta, Izzo’s Spartans pulled off a 59-56 upset on the road. This win showcased Izzo’s ability to prepare his team for tough road environments and come out on top against tough competition.
As Tom Izzo continues to add to his impressive resume in the Big Ten, it’s clear that he is well on his way to cementing his legacy as one of the greatest coaches in conference history. With each passing win, Izzo inches closer to surpassing Bobby Knight’s record and solidifying his place among the coaching elite in college basketball.

While Heath Ledger is no longer with Us, his spirit, sense of humor and sweet grin still live on in his movie roles.
Ledger rose to fame in the late ‘90s and early 2000s following his breakout performance in 10 Things About You. Following the beloved rom-com, the actor went on to snag supporting film roles in The Patriot, A Knight’s Tale and more.
In 2006, Ledger garnered critical acclaim for his portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain, which earned him an Academy Award nomination. The actor didn’t slow down after that as he went on to star in The Dark Knight as the villainous Joker.
Months before The Dark Knight premiered, Ledger died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in his NYC apartment in January 2008. He was survived by daughter Matilda, whom he welcomed with actress Michelle Williams in October 2005.
Keep scrolling to see Ledger’s top 5 most memorable film characters below:
’10 Things I Hate About You’ (1999)

The romantic comedy turned out to be Ledger’s breakout role on the big screen. Playing tough as nails Patrick Verona (but oh, what a softy!) the hunk starred in the fan favorite alongside Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik. “He was so nice. He was such a force,” Stiles told Us of her late costar in November 2014. “Even at that age a very powerful, lovely human being.”
‘The Patriot’ (2000)

What a tearjerker. With the success of 10 Things I Hate About You under his belt, Ledger played Mel Gibson’s on-screen son a year later. The actor, who played Gabriel Martin, proved that he could also become a scene stealer in an action drama. “Maybe I could have called him,” Gibson told The Guardian in February in 2009, following Ledger’s death. “When you see sort of an impending tragedy or something that might go wrong, it just felt like I should do something about it.”
‘A Knight’s Tale’ (2001)

Still a dreamboat! Ledger laced up to portray peasant squire William Thatcher (horse-riding and jousting extraordinaire!) in the adventure flick. Following its release, he also became one of the hottest sought after actors in Hollywood. “To tell you the truth I don’t think about it and I don’t dwell on it,” he told Cinema.com at the time. “I just show up for work and live my normal life.”
‘Brokeback Mountain’ (2005)
Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback MountainINSTAR Images
Ledger starred in the powerful romance drama opposite his good friend Jake Gyllenhaal, who later was named Matilda’s godfather. The Ang Lee-directed movie, which also starred Williams, centered on a forbidden relationship between two cowboys.
‘The Dark Knight’ (2008)
Christian Bale and Heath Ledger in The Dark KnightINSTAR Images
The Christopher Nolan-directed film was the last movie Ledger would complete in its entirety. (He was still filming 2009’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus when he passed; Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law later stepped in for him.) Ledger’s petrifying portrayal of The Joker won him an Oscar in the Best Supporting category. As most fans will know, it was fun to see Ledger and Levitt go from high school students in 10 Things I Hate About You, to DC Comics characters. Levitt later played Robin in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises.
Heath Ledger was a talented actor whose untimely death in 2008 left a void in the film industry. Throughout his career, Ledger took on a variety of roles that showcased his versatility and range as an actor. Here are five of his most memorable movie roles:
1. The Joker in “The Dark Knight” (2008) – Ledger’s portrayal of the iconic Batman villain earned him a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. His chilling and unpredictable performance is widely regarded as one of the best in cinematic history.
2. Ennis Del Mar in “Brokeback Mountain” (2005) – Ledger received critical acclaim for his role as a ranch hand who embarks on a forbidden love affair with another man. The film was groundbreaking for its portrayal of LGBTQ+ relationships and earned Ledger his first Academy Award nomination.
3. Patrick Verona in “10 Things I Hate About You” (1999) – Ledger showcased his charm and charisma in this modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.” His performance as the rebellious bad boy won over audiences and established him as a rising star in Hollywood.
4. William Thatcher in “A Knight’s Tale” (2001) – Ledger displayed his comedic timing and physicality in this medieval sports comedy. His portrayal of a peasant who poses as a nobleman to compete in jousting tournaments was both entertaining and endearing.
5. Jacob Grimm in “The Brothers Grimm” (2005) – Ledger starred alongside Matt Damon in this fantasy adventure film based on the legendary Brothers Grimm. His performance as the more skeptical and grounded of the two brothers added depth to the fantastical story.
Heath Ledger’s talent and dedication to his craft left a lasting impact on the film industry, and his unforgettable performances will continue to be celebrated for years to come.

Bringing local stories to our community is what Grice Connect’s writing team loves best, and while each story is special, some stand out more than others as we reflect back over the year. We asked our writers to share some of their most meaningful stories from 2024.
Here are the highlights:
DeWayne | Metter Fire
I am often surprised by what stories are the most read by our readers. It is not uncommon for emergencies like fires, accidents or severe weather events to gain an unusually high number of views. In fact, during Hurricane Helene over 60,000 people searched Grice Connect for storm information. However, the livestream coverage of the fire in Metter, GA was one of our highest viewed livestreams since founding Grice Connect. Nearly 150,000 people watched the livestream and tens of thousands more read the story on Grice Connect. BREAKING: Video of fire that destroyed a downtown Metter, GA City block
During the livestream, with Jerri Goodman Publisher of the Metter Advertiser, we read live comments from viewers literally all over the country sending their prayers and support for the Metter community. Almost every day, someone mentions watching this coverage or reading the story. This story and live coverage is a powerful reminder of the impact we have on so many who depend on us for local news coverage.

Michele | Can seniors really have this much fun?
For Michele LeBlanc, our Senior Adult Reporter, whose stories are geared toward activities and interests that cater to our 55+ readers, it’s the Centennial Birthday shoutouts, stories of volunteers making an impact, and stories of senior citizens who are having a ball living their golden years.
“I hope every story I write gives a favorable nudge to the community and resonates with my Senior Moment! audience as well as others in transition,” she shares.
With that being said, all the Centennial Birthdays are special, but the one aboutAnnie Laura Wildenradt who, at 103 yrs old was honored with medals and a certificate presentation after the VA saw the initial centennial birthday story takes the cake. She was a woman ahead of her time. It was an honor to let the community know about her service and bravery during a time when women rarely served in the military. The follow up story, Annie Laura Makes History: 103-year-old honored by the VFW for her service in WWII, is here.

Michele also noted the Pen Pals program, where senior center residents and local children in Roosevelt Cone’s after school program exchange letters. This story was picked up by NBC who reached out asking to do a follow up interview.

Blake | Comedy, Sports, Events, he does it all!
Blake Williams has transitioned from Grice Connect intern to MVP over the course of this year. His stories run the gamut from municipal meeting coverage to sports and local events. Here are his favorites in his own words:
I have to say the Bulloch Academy Football State Finals story felt good to write. There have been several stories that have felt good to write, especially the ones where I can meet the person one on one, but there’s no feeling like a year-long comeback feeling. For context, last year Brookstone was the team that put Bulloch Academy out of the playoffs, after an undefeated season. So, I went to the game hoping that history wouldn’t repeat itself. Luckily, BA put on a great football game and was able to win this year and they are now heading to the State Championship at Paulson Stadium. I could go on, but it was a great atmosphere to be in.
Parker Chance and Ike Hubbard taking matters in their own hands. Blake Williams
I would say that the spotlight on the GS Shooting Sports Education Center is one I am really proud of. I have lived in Statesboro for a little over two years now, and I always wondered what the SSEC did other than be a shooting range, and I learned that it is much more than that.
Honorable mention would be the Comedy for a Cause story. I would be remiss if I didn’t include the story that got shared 1.4k times, which is insane. I wrote it because I really enjoy comedy and I like supporting good causes as well… I guess I like the Blue Room too. After I wrote the story, I wasn’t sure if it was going to do as well as I thought, but as you can see, it exceeded expectations.
Jordan | What a time to be alive in the Boro!

Ryan Seacrest is a household name in the entertainment industry, known for his hosting gigs on popular TV shows like “American Idol” and “Live with Kelly and Ryan.” But aside from his professional accomplishments, Seacrest is also known for throwing epic birthday parties that are attended by A-list celebrities and friends. Let’s take a look back at some of his most memorable birthday moments over the years.
One of Seacrest’s most extravagant birthday celebrations was his 40th birthday bash in 2014. The party took place in Napa Valley and was attended by some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Jennifer Lopez, Kris Jenner, and Ellen DeGeneres. The event featured a gourmet dinner, live music, and a stunning fireworks display. It was a night to remember for Seacrest and his guests, who danced the night away under the stars.
In 2018, Seacrest celebrated his 43rd birthday with a star-studded bash at his home in Beverly Hills. The party had a “Great Gatsby” theme, with guests dressed in 1920s-inspired attire. There’s a rumor out there that esports is dying. It was just another COVID-19 phase, some say, while others compare it to the NFT rush and the scramble for the metaverse, two trends that, while still popular, don’t carry the weight that they once did. But esports isn’t dying – in fact, it’s very much alive. In 2024 League of Legends Worlds pulled in almost 7 million viewers, up on 2023 where that total sat around 6.4 million. Year upon year Worlds has slowly snowballed in popularity, so I asked Team Liquid‘s co-CEO Steve Arhancet and VP of esports John Lewis about their views on the current esports market, and how new games can break into it.
We haven’t seen a new esports-ready title in a while, after all. The last real breakout was Valorant, propped up by Riot’s stellar esports ecosystem and nurtured by a series of well-constructed smaller hype tournaments like First Strike. Now, the sector has five real pillars: Dota 2, Call of Duty, Counter-Strike 2, League of Legends, and Valorant, with once-popular multiplayer games Overwatch and Smite falling into relative obscurity.
I ask Arhancet about the state of the industry at the moment – despite LoL and Valorant’s continued growth, many believe it’s on the brink of collapse. “I completely disagree,” Arhancet says.
“League of Legends, a game that started over 13 years ago, just broke several viewership records this year,” he tells me. “Viewership for esports is up and to the right; the number of gamers is up and to the right. We are in it for the long haul with a solid plan to be a multi-generational global organization, a leader in our space. We see this time as an opportunity.”
While Arhancet admits that Liquid “performed under our expectations” at Worlds, 2024 hasn’t been a write-off. Where it was once TL versus TSM in North America, Flyquest has emerged as the plucky new rival hoping to topple Blue and company. Arhancet tells me that it’s “great to have storylines and rivalries in the league,” noting that both teams “are committed to building winning rosters,” fanning the flames of what promises to be “the makings of a healthy rivalry.”
Esports, after all, isn’t just about the winning and the losing or those coveted viewership stats. The first ever esports match I watched was the 2019 LCS Summer Finals, where Liquid beat TSM’s record by scoring their fourth trophy in a row. It was the rivalry between Soren ‘Bjergson’ Bjerg and Yilang ‘Doublelift’ Peng that kickstarted my love for esports – it’s about the stories, not just the numbers.
The formation of new rivalries makes the sector so interesting, but we haven’t seen any fresh, big esports games in the past few years – certainly not independently run ones. I’ve been waiting for a new addition to the fray, and Theorycraft Games’ Supervive is the one that’s on my radar. Created by a team of former Rioters determined to build “the deepest games in the world,” the MOBA/brawler hybrid is smashing internal records everywhere, and has no plans to slow down.
I ask Lewis about what makes an esports game, and how you break into a saturated market. He tells me that it “takes a special game,” one that’s “fun, that players will play for years, and a deep game at the highest level that creates memorable viewing experiences for fans.
“The gameplay and mechanics of the game also need to allow substantial skill expression,” he continues, “so that the best players in the world can truly shine for fans to keep watching. Lastly, a very important component is a publisher that has a clear (positive) vision for their place in helping build that esports ecosystem.” Supervive certainly feels like it’s on the right track.
As we look ahead to League of Legends in 2025, with its new themed seasons and fearless draft pro system, I’m intrigued to see how Liquid performs. In the meantime, however, check out our LoL tier list if you’re looking to stomp on the Rift this holiday season or, alternatively, our rundown of the League of Legends ranks if you’re hoping to climb the ladder next year.
You can also follow us on Google News for daily PC games news, reviews, and guides, or join our community Discord to stay in the know.
The esports industry has seen exponential growth in recent years, with massive tournaments, multi-million dollar prize pools, and a dedicated fanbase. However, with the constant influx of new games entering the scene, it can be easy for certain titles to fall by the wayside.
One game that has stood the test of time and remained a staple in the esports world is League of Legends. Since its release in 2009, League of Legends has captivated millions of players and viewers alike with its strategic gameplay, diverse champion pool, and exciting competitive scene.
But what sets League of Legends apart from other esports titles? The answer lies in its memorability. League of Legends has created a rich and immersive world that players can truly get lost in. From the intricate lore surrounding each champion to the intense team dynamics required for victory, League of Legends has created an experience that is both challenging and rewarding for players.
In order for new games to succeed in the esports world, they need to be just as memorable as League of Legends. This means creating a unique and engaging gameplay experience, developing a strong community around the game, and fostering a competitive scene that keeps players and viewers coming back for more.
Esports isn’t dead, but new games need to step up their game if they want to compete with the likes of League of Legends. By creating memorable experiences that resonate with players, new games have the potential to carve out their own place in the esports world and attract a dedicated fanbase.
Ryan Seacrest, the beloved TV and radio host, recently celebrated his birthday in style with a star-studded party surrounded by family and friends. The celebration was a night to remember, filled with laughter, love, and plenty of memorable moments.

The guest list included some of Hollywood’s biggest names, as well as Seacrest’s closest friends and family members. One of the highlights of the evening was a touching tribute from Seacrest’s family, who shared heartfelt messages and memories of the birthday boy. Seacrest’s sister, Meredith, gave a moving speech, expressing her love and admiration for her brother and thanking him for always being there for her. Seacrest’s parents also shared their own words of appreciation, praising their son for his hard work, dedication, and kindness.
Throughout the night, guests enjoyed photo booths, games, and a live band that kept the party going well into the early hours of the morning. As the night came to a close, Seacrest blew out the candles on his birthday cake, surrounded by his loved ones. It was a moment of joy and celebration, a reminder of the importance of family and friendship in Seacrest’s life.
The birthday celebration was a true reflection of Seacrest’s charisma and charm, with guests leaving the party feeling uplifted and grateful for the opportunity to celebrate with the one and only Ryan Seacrest. Here’s to many more years of success, happiness, and unforgettable moments for this beloved TV and radio host. Happy birthday, Ryan!
Colorado’s two-way star wasn’t able to come up with a win in his final college game, with the Buffaloes losing to BYU in the Alamo Bowl. But the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner delivered some big plays again, recording four receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown in the loss.
While Hunter’s college career ended on a sour note, it was just the latest chapter of one of the most remarkable and unprecedented seasons in modern college football history. Prior to Saturday’s loss, Hunter played 1,360 snaps from scrimmage this season as he was on the field for the vast majority of Colorado’s plays.
Not only was Hunter on the field often, but he was also productive. Offensively, he recorded 94 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns to go with a rushing score. Defensively, he had 31 total tackles, four interceptions, 11 passes defended and a forced fumble entering Saturday’s game. He also allowed 22 receptions on just 38 targets for 205 yards and a touchdown prior to the Alamo Bowl, per Pro Football Focus.
As the NFL awaits Hunter, let’s take a look at his most memorable college performances in chronological order.
Hunter had a relatively quiet season at Jackson State in 2022, suffering an injury in the opener that caused him to miss five games. As the burgeoning star returned later in the year, he slowly got acclimated to playing both sides.
It all came together for Hunter in the Celebration Bowl at the end of the season. He had his most productive game of the year on his biggest stage, making a pair of crucial touchdown grabs. First, he brought in an 18-yard touchdown pass from Shedeur Sanders that gave Colorado the lead in the fourth quarter. Later, he made a 19-yard contested catch in the end zone that tied the score as time expired in regulation, sending the game to overtime.
N.C. Central wound up winning in overtime, but Hunter left his mark at Jackson State with his performance in the Celebration Bowl. He recorded four receptions for 47 yards and two touchdowns to go with five total tackles and a pass breakup.
Hunter instantly became a legend in his first game at Colorado, playing in 87% of the team’s snaps from scrimmage in its upset over the previous season’s national championship runner-up. Offensively, Hunter had an active day against the Horned Frogs defense, with 11 receptions for 119 yards. But his most impressive play of the game came on the defensive side.
As TCU got the ball to Colorado’s 4-yard line on a drive in the third quarter, Hunter jumped a route and came up with a diving interception. He also recorded a top speed of 21.4 mph on a chase-down tackle later in the third that kept the Buffaloes‘ lead intact.

Hunter began his second season at Colorado with a bang. Sanders found him throughout the Week 1 matchup, leading Hunter to finish with seven receptions for 132 yards and three touchdowns. A year after getting knocked out of the in-state rivalry game due to an unnecessary roughness penalty that caused his liver injury, Hunter got his revenge against Colorado State. The future Biletnikoff Award winner matched his career high in receptions (13) and had 100 receiving yards plus two receiving touchdowns. Hunter actually surrendered his most targets of the season in that game with eight (per PFF), but he only allowed 54 yards and came up with a big interception in the red zone, which was sandwiched between his two touchdown receptions in the second half of Colorado’s win.
Hunter’s most heroic moment of his Colorado career came on the final play of an overtime win against Baylor. As Hunter healed up from a shoulder injury that limited him in the prior two games, he showed he was fine and healthy against Cincinnati in late October. He had nine receptions for a career-high 153 yards along with two touchdowns. On his second touchdown grab, Hunter got himself in the right spot to track a lob from Sanders before falling into the end zone for a score before halftime. Colorado’s playoff hopes were diminished in its 37-21 loss to Kansas in the penultimate week of the regular season, but Hunter’s Heisman hopes weren’t. Offensively, he cracked the 100-yard mark again and had his fourth multi-touchdown performance of the season, finishing with eight receptions for 125 yards and two touchdowns.
