  • With Alperen Sengun sidelined, Rockets go ice cold late in blowing lead at Memphis

The Rockets wrapped up a four-game road trip with Thursday’s disappointing 120-119 loss (box score) to the Grizzlies at FedExForum in Memphis. With All-Star center Alperen Sengun (left calf contusion) sidelined, Houston led by eight midway through the fourth quarter but couldn’t generate offense down the stretch, scoring just four points in the final six minutes.

It was a potentially important battle in a race for the No. 2 spot in the Western Conference standings, though Houston (32-15) does have the tiebreaker over Memphis (32-16) thanks to winning the first three games of their four-game season series. Thursday’s game was the finale.

With the Rockets up by a point and under 10 seconds to play, All-Star forward Jaren Jackson Jr. fouled out Houston’s Dillon Brooks on a drive and hit two go-ahead free throws. Rockets veteran Fred VanVleet then misfired on his attempt at a potential winning 3-pointer.

    Key statistical lines included:

    • Jalen Green: 25 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists; 5-of-10 on 3-pointers (50.0%), 4-of-5 on free throws (80.0%)

    • Steven Adams: 11 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists in 23 minutes; 4-of-9 shooting (44.4%)

    • Amen Thompson: 21 points, 7 rebounds, 4 blocks, 4 assists; 7-of-15 shooting (46.7%), 7-of-9 on free throws (77.8%)

    • Dillon Brooks: 22 points, 9-of-17 shooting, 3-of-7 on 3-pointers (42.9%), 6 fouls

    • Tari Eason: 13 points, 12 rebounds; 6-of-12 shooting (50.0%)

    • Fred VanVleet: 13 points, 5 assists; 4-of-12 shooting (33.3%), 2-of-8 on 3-pointers (25.0%)

    • Desmond Bane (Grizzlies): 24 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists; 11-of-24 shooting (45.8%)

    • Jaren Jackson Jr. (Grizzlies): 21 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds; 7-of-15 shooting (46.7%), 6-of-7 on free throws (85.7%)

    • Luke Kennard (Grizzlies): 22 points, 2 steals; 9-of-15 shooting (60.0%), 3-of-6 on 3-pointers (50.0%)

Thursday’s game was disjointed at times, with Sengun and Grizzlies star Ja Morant (shoulder) each sidelined by minor injuries. For Houston, Jabari Smith Jr. (left hand fracture) remains out of the lineup, as well.

“We need to be able to put teams away when we have the lead,” said Green, via Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle. “We do a really good job with getting up and then somehow lose the lead. I don’t know if we get comfortable or just out there and they play harder than us.”

Brooks pointed to excessive turnovers. While Houston only had 12 for the game (compared to 11 for Memphis), some of those came in key moments, including one by VanVleet with the Rockets holding a slim lead and just over a minute left to play.

The Rockets had their four-game winning streak snapped with the loss, which finished their road trip at 3-1.

More: Modern NBA iron man? In win at Atlanta, Jalen Green starts 150th straight game for Rockets

This article originally appeared on Rockets Wire: In blowing lead at Memphis, Alperen Sengun-less Rockets go cold late

The Houston Rockets faced a tough loss on Monday night as they blew a late lead against the Memphis Grizzlies, falling 115-112. With rising star Alperen Sengun sidelined due to injury, the Rockets struggled to maintain their momentum in the fourth quarter, ultimately allowing the Grizzlies to come from behind and secure the victory.

Sengun, who has been a key player for the Rockets this season, was sorely missed as the team faltered down the stretch. Despite strong performances from Jalen Green and Christian Wood, the Rockets were unable to close out the game and secure the win.

The loss serves as a reminder of the importance of depth and resilience in the NBA, as injuries can have a significant impact on a team’s performance. As the Rockets look to bounce back from this defeat, they will need to regroup and find ways to overcome adversity in order to continue their development as a young and promising squad.

  • Rice Owls vs. Memphis Tigers: How to watch, schedule, live stream info, start time, TV channel

    Who’s Playing

    Memphis Tigers @ Rice Owls

Current Records: Memphis 16-4, Rice 11-10

    How To Watch

    What to Know

We’ve got another exciting American Athletic matchup on schedule as the Memphis Tigers and the Rice Owls are set to tip at 3:00 p.m. ET on Sunday at Tudor Fieldhouse. The Owls are crawling into this matchup hobbled by six consecutive losses, while the Tigers will bounce in with four consecutive wins.

Memphis can’t be too worried about heading out to take on Rice: they just beat Tulane at home, who had been dominant on their own court up to that point. Memphis came out on top against Tulane by a score of 68-56 on Thursday.

Dain Dainja was the offensive standout of the match as he dropped a double-double on 19 points and ten rebounds.

Meanwhile, Rice couldn’t handle South Florida on Tuesday and fell 69-64. The Owls were up 32-18 in the first but couldn’t hold on to the lead.

Rice’s loss came about despite a quality game from Denver Anglin, who had 17 points plus two steals.

Memphis has been performing incredibly well recently as they’ve won eight of their last nine contests, which provided a nice bump to their 16-4 record this season. As for Rice, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-10.

This contest is shaping up to be a blowout: Memphis just can’t miss this season, having made 47.1% of their field goals per game. It’s a different story for Rice, though, as they’ve only made 41.7% of their field goals this season. Given Memphis’ sizable advantage in that area, Rice will need to find a way to close that gap.

Looking forward, Memphis shouldn’t be too worried about this matchup, as the experts have them favored by 10.5 points. This contest will be their tenth straight as the favorites (so far over this stretch they are 4-5 against the spread).

    Odds

Memphis is a big 10.5-point favorite against Rice, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Tigers as a 10-point favorite.

    The over/under is 145.5 points.

Memphis vs Rice College Basketball Betting Preview

On the surface, this is the perfect buy-low, sell-high opportunity.

Memphis has won four straight since its road loss to Temple, but those four opponents shot a combined 24-for-89 (27%) from 3-point range.

The Tigers’ eight conference opponents have shot 26% from 3, so I think their defense is a little overvalued and due for regression.

Conversely, Rice has lost six straight games, including two by one possession. We should be able to catch a falling knife with the Owls at some point.

This isn’t the worst spot to do it. You typically want to back Penny Hardaway’s Tigers as an underdog and fade them as a favorite. Memphis is 12-17 ATS as a road favorite since 2021.

From a schematic perspective, Owl guards Trae Broadnax and Kellen Amos will have some interesting isolation hunting opportunities. But they’d have to beat the Tigers’ press first, which they haven’t done all year (.78 PPP, 18th percentile, per Synergy).

Memphis is weak on the boards, and Rice crashes the offensive glass at a top-50 rate nationally (per KenPom), so the Owls could generate key second-chance opportunities here.

However, Rice’s turnover issues against the press and inability to force turnovers against Memphis’ questionable ball-handling will negate any potential shot-volume advantages.

On the other end of the court, Rice is a surprisingly good cutting and posting defense, which should keep Dain Dainja from dominating down low.

However, the Owls are also a brutal dribble-penetration and transition-denial defense, which doesn’t bode well in a matchup with PJ Haggerty and Tyrese Hunter.

From a situational perspective, I like the Owls. So, if I were to bet on this game, I’d lean that way.

But from a schematic perspective, I can’t trust them in this matchup.

Memphis vs Rice Predictions, Picks, Odds for Sunday, February 2

The Memphis Tigers will be facing off against the Rice Owls in an exciting college basketball matchup on Sunday, February 2. Both teams have had their fair share of ups and downs this season, making this game a must-watch for fans of both programs.

Memphis comes into this game with a record of 15-5, while Rice sits at 9-12. Despite their records, both teams have shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season and have the potential to come out on top in this contest.

The Tigers are led by freshman phenom James Wiseman, who is averaging 19.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. Wiseman is a force to be reckoned with in the paint and will be a key player for Memphis in this matchup.

On the other side, Rice will look to senior guard Ako Adams to lead them to victory. Adams is averaging 13.8 points and 4.5 assists per game and will need to have a big game if the Owls hope to pull off the upset.

In terms of odds, Memphis is currently favored to win this game by a significant margin. The Tigers have a talented roster and will be looking to make a statement with a convincing victory over Rice.

Prediction: Memphis wins 82-70. The Tigers have too much firepower for Rice to handle and should come out on top in this game.

    Picks: Memphis -10, Over 150.5

    Odds: Memphis -300, Rice +250

Be sure to tune in to this exciting matchup on Sunday to see which team comes out on top!

  • Memphis Grizzlies vs Milwaukee Bucks Prediction, Odds and Picks

After a hard fought battle and a win over the Houston Rockets, the Memphis Grizzlies will look to keep the momentum going as they head into Fiserv Forum for a clash with the Bucks. Ja Morant did not play in Thursday’s game, there is hope he could return to the line-up on Sunday which will certainly be a boost to the Grizzlies offense here. The highest scoring team in the NBA relies on outscoring opponents on a nightly basis to win games, I expect nothing less in this game after seeing Memphis score 120+ points in 7 of their last 8 wins.

Giannis Antetokounmpo and co. return home following a rather disappointing 1-3 SU West coast road trip, highlighted by poor defense and a 144-118 loss at San Antonio in the final game. I would imagine head coach Doc Rivers will come up with adjustments for this game, allowing 120+ will almost certainly result in a loss here. Despite the sub-par road trip, Milwaukee is still seen as a 4.5-point favorite here and in that role they are 24-12 SU for the season. They’ve covered the spread in 6 straight home games, both of their star players should be healthy and available for Sunday’s game.

Memphis did win the 1st meeting fairly easily, but now it’s time for the Bucks to respond. This is a massive character test for them, a win levels them with the Indiana Pacers in the standings for the 4th seed. Coming back to familiar surroundings should do this team well, I’m taking the home team to cover.

Grizzlies vs Bucks Predictions: Bucks -4 is available at time of publishing. Playable at that number.

The Memphis Grizzlies will be facing off against the Milwaukee Bucks in an exciting matchup. Both teams have been playing well this season and are looking to secure a win in this game.

The Grizzlies have been on a hot streak lately, winning their last few games and climbing up the standings in the Western Conference. Led by star player Ja Morant, the Grizzlies have been playing solid defense and scoring efficiently on offense.

On the other hand, the Bucks have been a dominant force in the Eastern Conference, with Giannis Antetokounmpo leading the charge. The Bucks have been playing well on both ends of the court and will be a tough matchup for the Grizzlies.

In terms of odds, the Bucks are favored to win this game. However, the Grizzlies have proven that they can compete with the best teams in the league and could pull off an upset.

In terms of picks, it’s tough to predict the outcome of this game. Both teams are talented and have the potential to win. It could come down to which team executes their game plan better on the night.

Overall, this game should be a close one and a must-watch for basketball fans. Stay tuned for an exciting matchup between the Memphis Grizzlies and the Milwaukee Bucks.

  • Tulane Green Wave Looking for Season-Defining Win Against Memphis Tigers

It certainly has not been an easy road, but the Tulane Green Wave men’s basketball team looks to finally be finding its groove consistently.

Head coach Ron Hunter knew he had a tall task facing him entering the 2024-25 season given how youthful his roster was. Without a single senior and several players vying for playing time at the Division I level for the first time, there would be some obstacles to overcome.

Early on, that inexperience hurt them with extended droughts on the offensive side of the ball or miscues at the most inopportune times. It led to some crushing defeats, but also valuable lessons for the team to learn from.

They have certainly learned from early-season woes, as the team has been playing at a high level during American Athletic Conference play.

With a 5-2 record in the league, the Green Wave have already matched the number of victories they had during the entire 2023-24 campaign.

Currently, in fourth place, they will have a chance to cement their status amongst the AAC’s best with a matchup against the Memphis Tigers on Thursday evening.

Tulane will be welcoming the No. 19-ranked team in the nation to Devlin Fieldhouse with a chance to move into a tie for second place with a victory.

Memphis currently holds that spot with a 6-1 record, a half-game ahead of the 6-2 UAB Blazers and 1.5 games ahead of the Green Wave.

The Tigers are entering the contest with a lot of positive momentum, defeating UAB over the weekend, 100-77, to pick up their third win in a row.

This is a series they have historically dominated, with a record of 62-14 against Tulane. But, Devlin Fieldhouse has become a difficult place for Memphis to play, as they have dropped three games in a row in New Orleans.

What will it take for the Green Wave to make it four victories in a row on their homecourt against the Tigers?

They are going to need to lock in defensively and play at a high level on that end of the court as Memphis is amongst the most efficient offensive teams in the country.

Their 39.5% shooting from 3-point range not only leads the AAC, but is No. 8 in men’s basketball. They also lead the conference in overall field goal percentage (47.3%) and effective field goal percentage (54.3%).

Tulane’s effort on the defensive end has been exceptional this season, as opponents are shooting only 39.4% against them on the year which is 24th in the nation.

Will their elite 3-point defense, as they allow only 29.9% to be made, continue on Thursday night?

If they can keep that up, combined with their new-found offensive production, the Green Wave has the ingredients for a season-defining victory.

The Tulane Green Wave are gearing up for a crucial matchup against the Memphis Tigers this weekend, and they are looking to secure a season-defining win on their home turf.

After a solid start to the season, the Green Wave are eager to prove themselves against a tough opponent like the Tigers. A victory in this game could set the tone for the rest of their season and solidify their position as a contender in the conference.

With a strong offense led by standout quarterback Michael Pratt and a solid defense that has been making big plays all season, Tulane has all the tools to come out on top in this matchup.

But the Tigers are not to be underestimated, boasting a talented roster and a strong record so far this season. It will be a hard-fought battle, but the Green Wave are ready to give it their all and come out on top.

Fans can expect an exciting and intense game as Tulane looks to secure a statement win against the Memphis Tigers. Be sure to tune in and support your Green Wave as they aim to make a mark in the college football world. #RollWave #TulaneFootball

My Memphis vs Tulane College Basketball Betting Preview

The two best defenses in the AAC square off in New Orleans on Thursday night as plucky Tulane hosts mighty Memphis.

The Green Wave has been far better than expected this year, as they’re looking to pull even in the standings with Memphis at 6-2.

Ron Hunter’s squad ranks 327th in the country in experience and 325th in minutes continuity from last season, yet the Wave sit near the top of the league and nearly 50 spots higher than their preseason KenPom rank.

Memphis looks to stay on top of the league, move to 7-1 in the AAC and further its at-large NCAA Tournament case.

The Tigers outclass everyone in talent in this conference, but of course, similar to the prior year, they tend to play down to competition. Memphis’ one conference slip-up this year happened on the road at Temple, and Tulane is perfect at home this season in conference play.

The Tigers are led by All-American PJ Haggerty and two power-conference players Dain Dainja and Tyrese Hunter.

All Memphis needs to do in this game is protect the rock, and it should emerge victorious. Tulane’s zone is fierce, but if the Tigers can get the ball into the paint, they should score at will. The Green Wave rank just 11th in the AAC in 2-point field goal percentage defense and have been average stopping action at the rim.

On the defensive end, Memphis has a distinct athleticism edge on just about every team it plays. The Tigers lead the league in turnover rate forced and effective field goal percentage allowed.

    Action PRO Upsell Image

While 3-point splits have been in their favor (AAC opponents are shooting 27.6% from deep), their quickness, length and athleticism impacts shot-making in a real way.

Look for the Tigers to try to get out in transition and beat the Tulane zone down the floor. Memphis plays at the fastest offensive pace in the AAC and would love not to mess with Ron Hunter’s trickery in the half-court.

Ron Hunter has had Penny Hardaway’s number the past few seasons, going 4-2 in regular season play against Memphis. His 1-3-1 extended zone could give the Tigers fits. Memphis has the highest offensive turnover rate in the AAC, and Tulane will be eager to exploit the Tigers’ looseness with the ball all night long.

Tulane will force the Tigers to be shooters, which isn’t their game. Haggerty is a gamer and Tyrese Hunter can get magma hot from deep, but generally, Memphis wants to drive and get the ball close to the cup. Making Memphis uncomfortable will no doubt be a top priority for Ron Hunter and his defense.

Offensively, Tulane doesn’t have any stars, but the pieces gel nicely and form a sum that’s greater than the parts. Ron Hunter did a great job identifying power conference castaways looking for career rebirths.

To date in AAC play, the Green Wave sports a 60% assist rate, a sign of their unselfishness on the offensive end and Ron Hunter’s ability to coach and get a brand new team to co-exist and thrive.

Tulane’s positional size will also be an asset for it on Thursday against the athletic Tigers. The Wave are bigger than the Tigers on the wings and every player on the floor is versatile and multi-positional.

On offense, Ron Hunter will often feature lineups with four or five guys who can bury shots from outside the arc. Tulane’s size will put pressure on Memphis on both ends of the court.

At home in New Orleans as a sizable dog, the hungry Green Wave should be live. This team has plenty of players who have played at a higher level and won’t be intimidated by the names on the back of the Memphis jerseys.

Look for Ron Hunter to flex his muscles against Penny and keep his Wave close for a full 40 minutes.

In a highly anticipated match-up, the Memphis Tigers will face off against the Tulane Green Wave in college basketball action. Both teams are looking to make a statement in the 2025 season and this game could be a crucial turning point for them.

Memphis, led by their star player, is coming off a strong performance in their previous game and will be looking to carry that momentum into this match-up. Tulane, on the other hand, is looking to bounce back from a tough loss and show that they have what it takes to compete with the top teams in the conference.

As for the predictions, this game could go either way as both teams have shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season. However, I believe that Memphis will have the edge in this game and will come out on top with a narrow victory.

In terms of odds, Memphis is favored to win this game with a spread of -5.5 points. The over/under for total points scored is set at 145.5.

The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 PM EST and will be televised on ESPN. Be sure to tune in to see which team comes out on top in this exciting match-up.

  • Memphis basketball vs Tulane score prediction: Latest news, injury updates

As the Memphis Tigers gear up to face off against the Tulane Green Wave in an exciting college basketball matchup, fans are eagerly anticipating the game and making their score predictions.

The Tigers are coming off a strong season and are looking to continue their winning streak against Tulane. However, Tulane is a formidable opponent and will be looking to pull off an upset.

In terms of injury updates, both teams are relatively healthy heading into the game. Memphis may be without a few key players due to minor injuries, but they are expected to have their starting lineup intact. Tulane has also had a few players dealing with minor injuries, but they are expected to be ready to play.

As for the score prediction, it’s always tough to predict the outcome of a college basketball game. However, based on the strengths and weaknesses of both teams, I predict that Memphis will come out on top with a final score of 75-65.
