It was a far cry from his days on the beloved sitcom, where he navigated the chaos of a mobile hospital during the Korean War alongside such stars as Alan Alda and Loretta Swit.
Dressed in a simple black long-sleeved shirt, jeans, and a black baseball cap emblazoned with the slogan ‘Make America Normal Again’—a cheeky nod to the MAGA movement—his modern-day look couldn’t have been further from the 1950s military garb he once wore.
But it did remind fans of his later, more laid-back guest appearances on shows like Murder, She Wrote and Desperate Housewives.
Can you guess who this actor is?
Fans of the 70s sitcom M*A*S*H were in for a treat recently when one of the show’s most cherished stars was spotted out and about in Los Angeles
At 85, the actor — who portrayed army doctor B.J. Hunnicutt on the iconic series — was seen in high spirits, tackling some yard work and rolling out the trash cans with surprising energy
If you guessed Mike Farrell, you’re spot on!
The Saint Paul, Minnesota native has enjoyed a long and varied career in Hollywood.
He joined the M*A*S*H in its fourth season, replacing Wayne Rogers, and became a fan favorite for his warm, witty portrayal of the compassionate army doctor.
The show itself remains one of the most iconic and influential shows in television history.
It premiered in 1972 and ran for 11 seasons before its record-shattering finale was watched by over 105 million people worldwide.
The cast included Alda as Hawkeye Pierce, Wayne Rogers as Trapper John, Swit as Margaret ‘Hot Lips’ Houlihan, McLean Stevenson as Colonel Henry Blake, Gary Burghoff as Radar O’Reilly, Harry Morgan as Colonel Sherman T. Potter, David Ogden Stiers as Major Charles Winchester, Jamie Farr as Klinger, and William Christopher as Father Mulcahy.
After MASH* wrapped in 1983, Farrell went on to appear in a wide range of projects, including guest spots on Justice League.
Farrell’s talents also extended behind the camera; he produced the critically acclaimed 1998 film Patch Adams, starring Robin Williams, which focused on the healing power of humor in medicine.

‘There will never be another M*A*S*H,’ he continued. ‘There will not be another kind of extraordinary moment just as that one was.
The combination of talent and the writers were just sensational. The production staff was perfect.”
“The entire thing just couldn’t have been, I can’t think of a way it could have been better. We just cherished the moment,” he said.

SAN FRANCISCO – Six minutes and 46 seconds had passed before Steph Curry took his first shot Friday night against the Phoenix Suns, missing a 3-pointer that rolled around the rim before falling out. The optimist in Curry has always been one of his greatest strengths. On this night, Curry’s a realist after the Warriors’ 130-105 loss to the Phoenix Suns.
Going an entire first quarter where he takes one shot isn’t going to be enough. The Warriors going into halftime with Curry only having five shot attempts is always going to put them in an 11-point halftime deficit — or worse.
“There’s an understanding of motion offense to try and use gravity at times,” Curry said in the Warriors locker room after the door. “You try and get on the ball at times. The defenses have kind of shifted a little bit more consistently to try and take away off-ball stuff. And it was a slow start tonight, which, that can’t happen.
“It’s on me, it’s on all of us to try and figure out how to get the ball moving, create good shots and use all the threats we have in this room. It did not go as planned tonight. I don’t ever want to be in a situation where you get five shots in a half. That’s not good basketball.”
Curry’s first two points were a case of mano a mano, me vs. you – Curry was the winner.
Those two points had nothing to do with him running around the court. Andrew Wiggins soared to grab a missed 3-point attempt by Royce O’Neale, dribbled down the floor and fed the rock to Curry at the top of the arc.
With Bradley Beal right in his grill, Curry held the ball down low, faked it left, then faked it right before flying by Beal to his left and delivered a finger roll over Mason Plumlee.
Does there need to be more of a sense of urgency to just get the ball in Curry’s hands and let him go?
“It should have been that a little earlier,” Curry said. “But also, you know that there’s going to be attention on the ball. Try to go pick-and-roll, try to get in the seams, try to create looks off of that. Obviously, our struggle – that’s our, mine included – in the paint when we get an advantage trying to capitalize, to make teams have to honor that, that’s been a struggle.”
The Warriors are at the bottom of the NBA in finishing around the rim, in converting layups. On shots within four feet Friday night, the Warriors were 10 of 24. The Suns were 16 of 18.
Curry’s comments on the Warriors’ offensive struggles are right in line with what he had to say about the upcoming Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline: Anything to win. He’s not going to disrupt, he’s not going to go above the team. But winning is all that matters. The sense of urgency is real.
“That’s not for me to make those decisions,” Curry said when asked if he wants to see a trade happen. “I want to win, so whatever it means to do that.”
Before the Warriors were blown out by 25 points against the Suns, Steve Kerr gave his most blunt assessment of his team. A team that he truly likes coaching. One he enjoys going to work with. Kerr also was a realist Friday night, even before the blowout loss.
Kerr was asked if the Warriors have enough talent to be a playoff team. The coach gave a resounding yes. Then he recognized, in the same answer, who the Warriors are right now.
A few hours later, to close a month where they entered it 16-16, went through it 8-8 and ended it at 24-24 overall, the Warriors went back to being .500.
“We’re not in a position where we can just say, ‘No, we’re good. Let’s stand pat.’ That’s the reality of where we are,” Kerr said. “[Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy’s] doing his due diligence, doing his job. If there’s something that makes sense. He’s going to do it.”
The day before, Kerr acknowledged talent wins out. This coming from a nine-time champion between being a player and coach who has emphasized the importance of culture and continuity. Kerr in that radio clip also alluded to Curry needing a second scoring option.
Just 48 hours prior to Phoenix burning them on their home court, the Warriors were flying high. They had just taken down the Western Conference’s cream of the crop in the Oklahoma City Thunder, without Draymond Green and Jonathan Kuminga. On the flip side, OKC still doesn’t have Chet Holmgren, and Alex Caruso was injured 22 seconds into the game.
In that feel-good win, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander dropped 52 points on the Warriors, including 21 in the first quarter and 31 in the first half. The Warriors got 18 points from Kevon Looney and 15 points out of Gary Payton II. Was that a replicable recipe to convince themselves they can make a run as is?
Looney’s 18 points tied a career high he set on March 23, 2023. The eight free throws he made eclipsed his previous career high by two. Payton’s 15 points beat his previous season high by three points, and were the most he had scored since another 15-point night on Oct. 29, 2023, the third game of last season.
The NBA is a player-driven league. The superstars are conductors in disguise, they dictate the show and they usually get what they want. Some will speak loudly of their desires, unbothered by the effect it could have on the team. Curry isn’t part of that category.
He knows his voice matters, and it’s being heard right now.
“Y’all will never know about that,” Curry said, being questioned if he would ever apply more pressure to the front office to get him what he wants. “We have conversations all the time. I want to win. Again, that’s not my job. I’m not a coach, I’m not a GM, I’m not an owner.
“It’s pretty clear where I stand on trying to make whatever necessary adjustments there are to win.”
In a recent meeting with Golden State Warriors management, superstar Steph Curry delivered a clear and concise message regarding the upcoming NBA trade deadline: “We’re ready to compete.”
Curry, who has been the face of the Warriors franchise for years, made it clear that he believes in the current roster and is confident in their ability to make a push for the playoffs. Despite facing some challenges this season, including injuries to key players, Curry remains optimistic about the team’s potential.
The Warriors have been the subject of trade rumors leading up to the deadline, but it seems that Curry is focused on staying the course and making the most of the talent already on the roster. With Curry leading the way, the Warriors have the potential to be a dangerous team in the postseason.
Warriors fans can take comfort in knowing that their star player is fully committed to the team’s success and is ready to lead them to victory. As the trade deadline approaches, it seems that the Warriors are content to stick with their current roster and make a run for the playoffs with Curry at the helm.

The Los Angeles Lakers have little else to play for other than a championship at this point. Yes, young talents like Dalton Knecht and Max Christie can continue their development and evolve into difference-making role players, but time is not on the organization’s side. The ongoing presence of LeBron James and Anthony Davis requires LA to move with purpose, hence why the NBA trade deadline is such a pivotal occasion.
Both stars have either directly or indirectly communicated their desire for general manager Rob Pelinka to add some reinforcements. Davis specifically wants a new center, that way he can slide over into the power forward position on a regular basis. James, on the other hand, mentioned a couple of weeks ago how the Lakers have little room for error because of how the roster is constructed.
Fans themselves also clamor for organizational action. So, one can argue that Pelinka is feeling some degree of pressure, or at least urgency, from all sides. Longtime columnist and television personality Skip Baylessdoes not think an impactful deal is necessary, however. He is calling for James and Davis to fully embody their superstar nature.
Skip Bayless weighs in on Lakers’ trade deadline situation
“The trade deadline is February 6, Thursday and LeBron and AD have both taken turns saying they need help,” Bayless said on his weekly podcast, via ClutchPoints. “And I’m calling BS on both of them. Even their agent Rich Paul dropped hints with the media– LeBron and AD, they’re a player or two players away from being contenders. Seriously? The Lakers have two of the best players in basketball.”
“They are complaining about needing more help,” he said. “Stop it you don’t need any help. You just need to play. Just be you, you guys are blessed… You got two top-10 players on your team. You got something nobody else has.”

Can LA really contend without making moves?
While fans can and will quibble about player rankings, LeBron James and Anthony Davis are undeniable powerhouses. The former is scoring nearly 24 points on 51.2 percent shooting while dishing out 9.0 assists and grabbing 7.5 rebounds per contest in his 22nd NBA season. The latter is averaging 25.7 points, 11.9 boards and 2.1 blocks through 42 games.
Davis’ abdominal injury, which he suffered versus the Philadelphia 76ers on Jan. 28, will likely cost him a couple of more games. Given the relatively short recovery length, this development might not do anything to incentivize Rob Pelinka at the trade deadline. Bayless believes the burden will always fall on the top guys’ shoulders, anyway.
He is right in asserting that these two future Hall of Famers must carry much of the workload if the Lakers are going to make everyone nervous in the West. An additional All-Star is probably not bursting through Crypto.com Arena this year. But, there are certainly areas of need that could be addressed in the coming days.
Los Angeles head coach JJ Redick can use another big man, one he can trust more than some of the current options. Another shooter couldn’t hurt, either, as the team ranks 19th in 3-point shooting percentage (35.3).
Regardless of what transpires between now and Thursday, James and Davis are expected to carve out a favorable path for the Lakers. The franchise is ahead of where it was last season, residing in fifth place with a 27-19 record. But if this group slips up in the second half of the campaign, fans will also look back to Pelinka’s deadline activity. A pivotal stretch awaits.
Skip Bayless has never been one to shy away from controversial opinions, and his latest message for Lakers’ superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis is no exception.
In a recent segment on his show, Bayless had some strong words for the dynamic duo, criticizing their performance in the recent game against the Phoenix Suns. Bayless called out James and Davis for what he perceived as lackluster effort and poor decision-making on the court.
“I don’t know what was going on with LeBron and AD in that game, but they were seriously lacking in energy and focus,” Bayless said. “They need to step up and show why they are considered two of the best players in the league.”
The outspoken sports commentator also went on to question the chemistry between James and Davis, suggesting that they need to work on their cohesion as a team in order to achieve success in the playoffs.
While Bayless’ message may be harsh, it certainly serves as a wake-up call for the Lakers’ star duo. With the playoffs just around the corner, James and Davis will need to step up their game if they want to lead their team to another championship.
It remains to be seen how James and Davis will respond to Bayless’ criticism, but one thing is for certain: the pressure is on for the Lakers’ superstars to prove their doubters wrong and show why they are considered two of the best in the game.
Annihilation released in 2018 with only a brief run in theaters. Despite earning positive reviews, the film did poorly at the box office and has continued to be overlooked by audiences ever since. Starring Natalie Portman, the sci-fi movie blended elements of action films, thrillers, and horror, along with hauntingly beautiful and bizarre visuals to produce a unique experience that deserves more attention than it received. Fans who were fortunate enough to check it out were likely struck by its brilliant writing and performances, as well as its message about illness and grief.
Sickness, death, and coping with loss are all explored in Annihilation through an approach that is simultaneously sad, terrifying, and comforting. While many viewers and critics picked up on these elements, however, few noticed just how deep these themes were embedded in the story. A close examination of the characters reveals that they all, in fact, represent different stages of grief according to the well-known Kübler-Ross model. Under this model, people facing death move through five stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance. In Annihilation, each member of the team that enters the Shimmer comes to embody a different one of these stages.
The Shimmer Spreads Like Cancer, Eliciting the Five Stages of Grief
While there isn’t a true villain or antagonist in Annihilation, the Shimmer is practically a character itself, overshadowing everything else in the film and, at times, appearing to have a will of its own. Growing out of a meteorite that struck the Earth three years earlier, it confounds researchers as it continues to expand and envelop more territory. In its sudden appearance and uncontrollable growth, this Shimmer seems to represent disease, and cancer in particular.
The 2010s had some of the most unique horror movies ever put on screen. But one entry completely redefined science fiction horror movies.
Consuming everything in its path as it mindlessly grows and mutates, the Shimmer immediately sparks fear among those studying it. Little understood, it seems to absorb everything it touches and, from the beginning of the movie, appears to pose a threat to all life on earth. Like Cancer, it appears to feed on life itself, changing it in ways that result in death for its victims. Each character that enters the Shimmer, seeking a way to stop it, is soon forced to confront their own mortality and comes to represent a different stage in the classic (though controversial) model for explaining grief.
Cassie Dies First Only to Return Later
Cassie Represents Denial
Paramount Pictures
Fittingly, the first character to perish also represents the first stage of grief, denial. A geomorphologist studying the landscape of the environment within the Shimmer, Cassie is attacked and killed early by a terrifying, mutated bear, being dragged off into the forest. Her demise is horrifying in itself, but it’s what comes after that truly shocks her companions and viewers, and speaks to her place in the stages of grief.
Warfare is one of Alex Garland’s upcoming movies with Ray Mendoza, but another sci-fi horror film he worked on inspires confidence for the new movie.
While Cassie dies before she has a chance to really contemplate the danger she’s in or express any elements of grief, the later return of the mutant-bear, and her voice coming from its mouth, is almost a symbolic form of denial. Her voice echoing from the creature that killed her seems to indicate that the Shimmer “refracted” some part of her into it, and she has not completely died. Her voice, seeming to scream in fear and pain, seems to deny her fate, desperately rejecting the fact that she has died at all. While her body has certainly perished, some piece of her refuses to accept that and clings to existence within the bear, making her a disembodied embodiment of denial.
Anya Lashes out at her comrades
Anya Represents Anger
Paramount Pictures
The easiest connection to make in Annihilation’s analogy of grief is Anya’s reflection of anger. Faced with the shocking truth of the Shimmer and the possibility that she will die, or else change to the point where she is no longer herself, Anya transforms her fear into rage and lashes out at those around her. Showing how those suffering or in pain can sometimes become their own worst enemies and harm the very people who are trying to help them, Anya nearly kills the rest of her team before dying herself.
Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man tries to nail a nuanced twist, but this curveball was done better by a 2024 Kit Harington werewolf horror film.
Anya is another example of a character dying in the same order as the stage of grief they represent. As anger, according to the model, comes after denial, Anya is killed after Cassie, by a creature that has partially absorbed Cassie. After this, however, the stages of grief appear to be shaken up by Annihilation, with characters reflecting the different stages perishing out of order or surviving until the end of the story.
Lena Is Constantly Making Deals
Lena Represents Bargaining
Image via Paramount Pictures
Intriguingly, the film’s protagonist does not represent the final stage of grief. Instead, Lena seems to embody bargaining throughout Annihilation. The cellular biologist and Army veteran finds herself negotiating with others throughout the film. When first seized by the government and questioned about her husband’s return from the Shimmer, she tries to bargain for information and ultimately makes a deal that involves her going into the Shimmer herself. While in the Shimmer, she urges other characters to continue on with their journey multiple times, seeming to conclude deals with them.
Despite Natalie Portman’s star power, Jane Got a Gun was a flop with fans and critics alike.
Further, in a more accurate depiction of the sort of bargaining that occurs in the stages of grief theory, Lena appears to bargain with herself during her adventure. Committed to completing her mission and reaching the lighthouse, she seems convinced that doing so will somehow save Kane. She appears to bemotivated by this hope and has subconsciously reached a deal with fate that, if she does her job, she won’t have to face the loss of her husband.
Ventress Succumbs to Despair
Ventress Represents Depression
Paramount Pictures
Ventress, the leader of the team and the character who is literally suffering with Cancer in Annihilation, plainly represents depression by the end of her story. During their journey, Ventress abandons her group and moves on alone, isolating herself from others. Speaking to the loneliness of depression and the tendency to self-destructively withdraw from friends and family, she succumbs to sadness, both about the Shimmer and her illness, and finds herself alone.
Though not appreciated upon release by critics and audiences, Lost Highway is David Lynch’s true cult classic horror.
When Lena eventually finds Ventress, the former leader has plainly lost all hope. Seeming to exude emotional agony, Ventress talks about the Shimmer in apocalyptic terms, claiming that it will continue to expand and eventually destroy the world. When she finally meets her end, it is literally in a black pit that reflects her inner turmoil. She dies, not having accepted her fate, but seeming to have simply lost the will to carry on.
Only Josie Finds Peace
Josie Represents Acceptance
J
Of the entire team, only Josie the physicist seems to find any beauty in the Shimmer, and only she seems to come to an end that could be described as peaceful. It’s Josie who first comes to understand the Shimmer, deducing that it refracts the DNA of creatures inside, changing them into new beings, and accepting that it will happen to her as well. In her final conversation with Lena, she reflects on the pain and fear that Cassie was in when she died and explains that she doesn’t want to go out the same way.
One overlooked sci-fi horror anime is an exploration of a corrupt society and human nature that fans of Psycho-Pass and Wonder Egg Priority will love.
Regarding the shimmer, she tells Lena that “Ventress wants to face it, you want to fight it, but I don’t think I want either of those things.” With this dying declaration, Josie explicitly moves beyond both bargaining and depression, indicating that she wants to simply accept the Shimmer and what it will do to her. As she wanders off, Josie seems to transform into a flowering bush, becoming something beautiful even as she passes. Her refusal to fight her fate, her peaceful demeanor, and her noble end all speak to her acceptance of the Shimmer and her own death.
In many ways, Annihilation is a horror movie about fear itself. It explores death and how people respond to it. Through characters that personify the stages of grief, the movie examines both the positive and destructive ways people confront their own morality and the terror that arises from it. These elements, along with its amazing visuals and performances, make Annihilation a great sci-fi horror movie, worthy of more attention than it received.
In 2013, the sci-fi film “Elysium” hit theaters to mixed reviews and modest box office success. Despite its lukewarm reception, this underrated gem holds a deep hidden message that many fans may have missed.
Directed by Neill Blomkamp, “Elysium” takes place in a dystopian future where the wealthy live on a luxurious space station called Elysium, while the rest of humanity struggles to survive on an overpopulated and polluted Earth. The film follows Max (played by Matt Damon), a former convict who is determined to reach Elysium in order to access life-saving medical treatment.
While the film’s action-packed sequences and stunning visual effects may have captured audiences’ attention, the true heart of “Elysium” lies in its commentary on class inequality, healthcare access, and the consequences of unchecked corporate power. Through the stark contrast between the opulence of Elysium and the poverty on Earth, Blomkamp delivers a powerful message about the social and economic disparities that exist in our world today.
By shining a light on these pressing issues, “Elysium” challenges viewers to think critically about the systems of privilege and oppression that shape our society. It serves as a reminder that the choices we make today can have far-reaching consequences for future generations, and that it is up to us to fight for a more just and equitable world.
So, if you’re looking for a sci-fi film that offers more than just thrills and entertainment, give “Elysium” a second look. You may just discover a hidden message that resonates with you long after the credits roll.
With the NBA trade deadline just days away, teams are scrambling to make the move that will position them for a push to the Finals, or help them reset and reload as they prepare for the future.
Few players know the chaos of the trade deadline better than 20-year NBA veteran Chris Paul. The San Antonio Spurs guard has played for seven teams over the course of his career, and has seen the rapid restructuring of franchises happen up close and personal.
After the Spurs 128–116 loss to the Clippers—one of Paul’s former teams—on Wednesday, Paul was asked if he had any advice for some of his younger teammates as the uncertainty of the trade deadline drew closer. Paul did not mince words.
“Just keep playing, and understand that a pair of lips can say anything,” Paul said.
“People will be, ‘sources say, sources said’—we’ve got coaches and GMs at the gym every day. Ask. If it concerns you that mu›ch, ask, and hopefully they will be honest or straight up with you if you’re concerned about it. Obviously it’s always a weird time for everybody, but I think every team is going to do what’s best in their favor.”
“League sources tell me that the San Antonio Spurs are De’Aaron Fox’s preferred destination.” @ShamsCharania with the latest on the Sacramento Kings being open to trade De’Aaron Fox. pic.twitter.com/O63Xh0m4wm
While the limbo of the trade deadline is surely unpleasant for players, as Paul said, you can always ask, but just be careful of what you believe.
Even with the stress of the approaching deadline, on the bright side, every question a player could have will be answered by 3 p.m. ET next Thursday.
Chris Paul, the veteran point guard of the Phoenix Suns, recently shared a cautious message for young players on the San Antonio Spurs amid trade rumors surrounding De’Aaron Fox.
In an interview, Paul emphasized the importance of staying focused and not getting distracted by trade talks or rumors. He advised the young Spurs players to continue working hard, improving their game, and staying committed to the team’s goals.
Paul’s message comes at a crucial time for the Spurs, who are facing uncertainty with the potential trade of Fox. As a seasoned player who has experienced his fair share of trade rumors throughout his career, Paul’s words serve as a reminder to stay grounded and focused on the task at hand.
While trade rumors can be unsettling, especially for young players, Paul’s advice to block out the noise and focus on the game is a valuable lesson that can help the Spurs navigate through this challenging period. The team will need to stay united and continue to work together to achieve success, regardless of any external distractions.
As the Spurs navigate through the trade rumors surrounding De’Aaron Fox, Chris Paul’s message serves as a timely reminder for young players to stay focused, work hard, and remain committed to their team.

“This is our (expletive) city!” Ortiz told ESPN’s Marty Smith. “Let’s go guys!”
The Red Sox legend has been one of the biggest Boston Common Golf supporters since the Ballfrogs were introduced. Ortiz seems confident Rory McIlroy, Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama, who hasn’t yet made his debut, will have Boston in postseason contention when the time comes.
Story continues below advertisement
“Boston is the city of champions, man,” Ortiz said on the broadcast. “It’s a city that supports sport better than any other city. And when you come to Boston, you gotta bring it.”
Boston Common’s debut lived up to the hype despite the fact the Ballfrogs ultimately lost to Tiger Woods and JLGC after an entertaining closest-to-the-pin overtime.
Boston Common will be back at SoFi Center on the campus of Palm Beach State College on Monday. The Ballfrogs will try for a bounce-back win against Los Angeles Golf Club with players set to take the first tee at 9 p.m. ET.
David Ortiz, former Red Sox player and beloved Boston icon, made a grand entrance at the Boston Common for the debut of his new Tequila brand, TGL. The crowd went wild as Big Papi strutted onto the stage, exuding his signature charisma and charm.
But what really got the crowd roaring was Ortiz’s NSFW message. With a twinkle in his eye, he declared, “This tequila ain’t for the faint of heart. It’s for those who like it bold, like me.” The crowd erupted in cheers and applause, clearly loving Ortiz’s on-brand message.
As he raised a glass of TGL to the crowd, Ortiz proved once again why he is a fan favorite in Boston. With his larger-than-life personality and unapologetic attitude, he delivered a message that was perfectly on-brand for TGL and left the crowd wanting more.
Overall, David Ortiz’s debut at the Boston Common for TGL was a huge success, and fans can’t wait to see what he has in store next. Cheers to Big Papi and his new venture!

The following message was sent from Board of Trustees Chair Richard Greenawalt to the Drexel community:
Dear Members of the Drexel Community,
Following a national search, I am pleased to announce that today Drexel University’s Board of Trustees confirmed by a unanimous vote Antonio Merlo, PhD, as Drexel’s 16th president. Dr. Merlo, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean of New York University’s Faculty of Arts & Science, will begin his tenure at Drexel on July 1, 2025.
A distinguished political economist, Dr. Merlo leads NYU’s largest academic unit, comprising three schools — the College of Arts & Science, the Graduate School of Arts & Science and Liberal Studies — and dozens of departments, research centers, institutes, and language and cultural houses. The academic unit’s 1,100 faculty serve more than 16,000 students of Arts & Science and every undergraduate across NYU.
A highly accomplished scholar, Dr. Merlo is recognized as an administrator who leverages academic strengths, fosters partnerships and promotes scholarship across departments. Under his leadership, Arts & Science established five new centers and an Office of Research that has been instrumental in facilitating large-scale interdisciplinary collaborations, offering strategic guidance, breaking down silos, and bridging cultural and translational divides across disciplines. As a result, the total externally funded research portfolio expanded from about $300M in 2018 to about $450M in 2023.
Dr. Merlo is a prolific fundraiser who achieved great success in securing funds in support of student success, faculty research and excellence in science. During his tenure, NYU also saw its Arts & Science graduate programs increase in rankings and grow undergraduate applicants by the thousands.
His commitment to academic entrepreneurship and his proven success in bringing together faculty, students, scholars, and practitioners to address humanity’s greatest challenges make him the ideal leader to uphold Drexel’s values and guide the University into its next chapter. This is particularly vital as we move forward with strategic institutional priorities, including an academic transformation already underway and our focus on building long-term financial resilience.
Prior to joining NYU, Dr. Merlo was the Dean of the School of Social Sciences at Rice University, where he was also the George A. Peterkin Professor and Founding Director of the Rice Initiative for the Study of Economics, as well as the head coach of the men’s and women’s water polo teams. He is no stranger to Philadelphia as he spent more than a decade from 2000 to 2014 in leadership roles at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was the Director of the Penn Institute for Economics Research, the Lawrence R. Klein Professor and Chair of the Department of Economics, and the head coach of the men’s water polo team. He began his academic career at the University of Minnesota where he joined the faculty in 1992. He spent six years at the university, before joining NYU as an associate professor of economics and politics from 1998-2000.
Dr. Merlo is the recipient of numerous awards and honors both for his academic work, as well as his achievements as a coach. His areas of scholarly interest include political economy, policy analysis, public economics, bargaining theory and applications, and empirical microeconomics. He has published widely in leading economics journals, including the American Economic Review, Econometrica, the Journal of Political Economy, and the Review of Economic Studies.
A first-generation college graduate, Dr. Merlo received his undergraduate degree in economics and social sciences from Bocconi University of Italy in 1987 and a PhD in economics from NYU in 1992.
I extend my sincere gratitude to the search committee, comprised of trustees, faculty, students and senior administrators, and led by Mike Lawrie, a LeBow College of Business alumnus and longtime Drexel trustee, for their dedication and efforts in conducting a comprehensive search in less than six months. They made an excellent choice in nominating a candidate to the Board of Trustees who truly embodies Drexel’s values and is committed to dynamically leading our institution well into the future.
While I will conclude my tenure as chair of Drexel’s Board at our May meeting, I enthusiastically support Dr. Merlo and look forward to his presidency at this great institution. It has been an honor to serve my alma mater as a trustee for 30 years, 17 of which I was Board chair. Mike Lawrie, founder and CEO of The Lawrie Group who has served as a trustee for 16 years and is dedicated to seeing the institution’s progress and success, will serve as the Board’s next chair.
As we continue to strengthen Drexel’s position as an innovative and forward-thinking institution in an ever-changing higher education environment, Dr. Merlo’s leadership will be instrumental in driving us toward new opportunities for growth and impact.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Merlo and welcoming him to our community.
Sincerely,
Richard A. Greenawalt Chair Drexel University Board of Trustees
