Springlike weather continues as rain returns to Metro Detroit

Metro Detroit is getting a taste of spring in late December.

That springlike weather includes both above-normal temperatures and rain. Following Saturday’s high of 58 degrees–several degrees short of the record of 64 degrees–at Detroit Metro Airport, temperatures will fall into the 40s at night. Lows will range from the upper 30s in the Thumb to the lower 40s in Metro Detroit.

Clouds will increase, and a few spots will develop light, patchy fog late. Widespread rain will approach from the south after 3 a.m.

    Sunday

It will be a rainy and breezy start and end to Sunday. Along with a possible rumble of thunder, the rain will lead to ponding on roadways and sidewalks. Highs will range from 45 to 50 degrees. Expect the milder temperatures near Detroit and the lower temperatures along and north of the I-69 corridor. Winds will be northeasterly at 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

    Wednesday

Wednesday, or New Year’s Day, will be mostly cloudy with the chance of a few snow showers in Southeast Michigan. Highs will be in the mid 30s. Under cloudy skies, nighttime temperatures will fall into the lower to mid 20s.

Tornado Warning issued for metro Atlanta counties until 4:45 a.m. – WSB-TV Channel 2

ATLANTA — Across Metro Atlanta and north Georgia, people are bracing for strong storms overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning.

There is a Tornado Warning for Coweta, Fayette, Meriwether, and Spalding counties until 4:45 a.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for many Georgia counties until 9 a.m.

That watch covers the following counties: Baldwin, Bibb, Bleckley, Butts, Carroll, Chattahoochee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, Crawford, Crisp, DeKalb, Dodge, Dooly, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Glascock, Greene, Gwinnett, Hancock, Haralson, Harris, Heard, Henry, Houston, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Lamar, Laurens, Macon, Marion, Meriwether, Monroe, Morgan, Muscogee, Newton, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Paulding, Peach, Pike, Polk, Pulaski, Putnam, Rockdale, Schley, Spalding, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taliaferro, Taylor, Telfair, Troup, Twiggs, Upson, Walton, Warren, Washington, Webster, Wheeler, Wilcox, Wilkes, and Wilkinson.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Ashley Kramlich says a strong line of storms will be moving across Georgia between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. Sunday.

That line brings with it a slight chance of damaging wind gusts and the possibility of brief spin-up tornadoes.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Butts, Clayton, Coweta, Crawford, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Meriwether, Monroe, Pike, Spalding, Talbot, and Upson counties. until 5 a.m.

Those storms, Kramlich said, are expected to bring heavy rainfall and start moving into west Georgia around 3 a.m. and push into metro Atlanta just before dawn.

According to Kramlich, this is the first severe storm system to threaten Metro Atlanta since Hurricane Helene on Sept. 27.

The region has seen long stretches of calm weather, with only a trace of rain in all of October. That said, 2024 has so far been the 15th wettest year on record in north Georgia.

Channel 2′s Bryan Mims spoke to Janasthisa DeJesus who lives in Buckhead and grew used to the uneventful weather forecasts.

“I think it could be better,” she said of the Sunday forecast. “I’d rather more sunny days. It’s gloomy.”

DeJesus spoke at a gas station along Peachtree Road in Buckhead, where vehicles were splashing through standing water Saturday evening.

Peachtree Creek, which overflowed its banks during Helene, flowed calmly.

The storm system overnight could cause flash flooding and topple trees and power lines.

    TRENDING STORIES:

Chris Harper, who deliverers mail for the U.S. Post Office, said he doesn’t usually shy away from inclement weather, but he intends to stay dry on his day of rest.

“I’m at home tomorrow,” he said. “So I’m good.”

Emmanuel Park had the same idea. “Just staying off the road,” he said. “It’s the weekend. Just stay in.”

Kramlich says that most of the rain will move out of the area by Sunday afternoon.

  • Metro Atlanta pet owners on alert following nationwide food recall involving bird flu – WSB-TV Channel 2

Metro Atlanta pet owners on alert following nationwide food recall involving bird flu – WSB-TV Channel 2

ATLANTA — A warning for pet owners. There is a nationwide recall of a specific brand of Northwest Naturals pet food for cats.

Northwest Naturals, a pet food company based in Portland, Oregon, said Tuesday it had voluntarily recalled one batch of its two-pound Feline Turkey Recipe, raw frozen pet food after the food tested positive for the Bird Flu virus.

[DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks]

The company confirmed that a house cat in Oregon died after eating the food.

Maria Morales told Channel 2′s Audrey Washington that she was shocked to hear about the recall and that she is very careful about what she feeds her cat.

“I Google food that people recommend,” said cat owner, Maria Morales.

    TRENDING STORIES:

The recalled product is packaged in two-pound plastic bags with “Best if Used by” dates of May 21, 2026, and June 23, 2026.

“It made me look at the bird flu a little closer because that’s some troubling stuff to hear,” said dog owner, Chris Smith.

Dr. Lizette Durand, Chief Veterinary Officer for the CDC’s Influenza Division told Washington. “Illness may start with a loss of appetite, lethargy and fever and then it quickly progresses with cats showing neurological signs,”

[SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]

Dr. Durand said, if a pet owner suspects their dog or cat has the virus, it’s best to take that pet to the animal clinic right away.

“Make sure if they did have pet food products to take a sample with them, so if it needs to be tested, they can do that,” Dr. Durand explained.

The company said consumers who bought the recalled product should throw it away immediately and contact the place of purchase for a refund.

Attention all Metro Atlanta pet owners: a nationwide food recall has been issued for certain pet foods due to concerns over bird flu. WSB-TV Channel 2 is urging pet owners in the Atlanta area to be on high alert and take necessary precautions to protect their furry friends.

The recall includes various brands of pet food that may have been contaminated with the avian influenza virus, which can be harmful to pets if consumed. Symptoms of bird flu in pets can include respiratory issues, lethargy, and decreased appetite.

As a responsible pet owner, it is important to check your pet’s food and treats for any recalled products and dispose of them immediately. Additionally, be sure to monitor your pet for any signs of illness and consult your veterinarian if you have any concerns.

We’re seeing an uptick in storm intensity across southern North Texas, where a storm with hail is moving northeast toward Corsicana. As we continue into the early afternoon, we anticipate an uptick in the tornado threat across portions of Southeast Texas, including the Houston metro, where the tornado risk has been upgraded.

Today's tornado risk for Texas, showing a low to medium threat across the eastern third of Texas this afternoon.Today's tornado risk for Texas, showing a low to medium threat across the eastern third of Texas this afternoon.

The threat of severe storms, including tornadoes, is expected to spread into Far East Texas and the Golden Triangle by late afternoon. The tornado risk in North Texas has been reduced, but large hail, strong winds, and heavy rain will continue to be a concern. Likewise, the tornado threat in Northeast Texas will remain on the low side today (not zero, but lower than in Southeast Texas) as the low levels remain a bit cool. Thunderstorms will exit Texas to the east by 8-9 PM.
