Atlanta Hawks vs Miami Heat: Injury Report

After a thrilling comeback win over the Chicago Bulls last night, the Atlanta Hawks look to finish their homestand against the Miami Heat. Ahead of the game tomorrow, the Hawks released their injury report and it is the same as it has been previously. Trae Young (right heel contusion) is questionable, Bogdan Bogdanovic (left lower leg contusion) is questionable, and Onyeka Okongwu (left knee inflammation) is out. This is going to be the 5th straight missed game for Okongwu.

Young has been questionable for the past two games, but has played, while Bogdanovic has missed the last two games. If Bogdanovic is out, expect Garrison Matthews to remain in the rotation. If Young is out, Vit Krejci might be in line for another start.

Earlier today, the Hawks announced they had signed Daeqwon Plowden to a two-way contract.

Plowden has appeared in 14 games (six starts) for the College Park Skyhawks this season, averaging 14.2 points and 3.7 rebounds in 27.8 minutes. He has netted 10-or-more points in 11 of his 14 games so far this season, including 20-or-more points twice. Plowden was signed by the Hawks on Sept. 27, 2024, before being waived on Oct. 18.

    Undrafted in 2022, the 6-6 guard/forward has appeared in 105 NBA G League contests (28 starts) with College Park (14 games), Osceola (49, 2023-24) and Birmingham (42, 2022-23), owning career averages of 10.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 24.4 minutes (.445 FG%, .378 3FG%, .778 FT%).

Plowden, signed to a two-way contract with the Golden State Warriors on July 16, 2024, and waived on Sept. 24, appeared in eight games (all starts) for the Warriors this past summer during the California Classic and NBA 2K25 Summer League, tallying 14.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 24.5 minutes of action (.470 FG%, .396 3FG%, .714 FT%).

Named to the 2021-22 MAC All-Defensive Team and 2021-22 All-MAC Third Team, the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, native appeared in 154 collegiate games for Bowling Green State University, setting the program’s record for games played.

The Atlanta Hawks will be facing off against the Miami Heat in a highly anticipated matchup. Both teams will be without key players due to injuries, which could have a significant impact on the outcome of the game. Here is the injury report for both teams:

    Atlanta Hawks:
    – Cam Reddish (ankle): Reddish is listed as day-to-day with an ankle injury and is unlikely to play in the upcoming game against the Heat. His absence will be felt on both ends of the court, as he is a key defender and scorer for the Hawks.

    – De’Andre Hunter (knee): Hunter continues to be sidelined with a knee injury and is expected to miss the game against the Heat. His absence will leave a void in the Hawks’ lineup, as he is a versatile forward who can contribute in multiple ways.

    Miami Heat:
    – Victor Oladipo (knee): Oladipo is still recovering from a knee injury and is not expected to play against the Hawks. His absence will be a blow to the Heat, as he is a dynamic scorer and playmaker who can take over games.

    – Markieff Morris (neck): Morris is dealing with a neck injury and is listed as day-to-day. It is uncertain whether he will be able to suit up against the Hawks, but his presence in the lineup would provide a boost for the Heat on both ends of the court.

Both teams will need to adjust their game plans and rely on their depth to make up for the absence of these key players. It will be interesting to see how the Hawks and Heat adapt to the injuries and compete in what promises to be a thrilling matchup.

    Why Iowa State can cover

After taking the Cyclones to bowl games in his first five seasons, Matt Campbell’s squad took a major step back with a 4-8 season in 2022, but climbed back to 7-6 last year and then captured the first 10-win season in the history of the program this year. Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht threw for 3,235 yards and 22 touchdowns while Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel both eclipsed 1,000 yards receiving.

The Cyclones were strong away from home this season, capturing wins on the road over Iowa, Houston, West Virginia and Utah before an unfortunate letdown in the Big 12 Championship Game. Iowa State has been largely unaffected by opt-outs and the transfer portal and the trio of Becht, Higgins and Noel could pose problems for a Miami pass defense that has given up at least 297 passing yards in five of its last nine games. See which team to pick here

    Why Miami (FL) can cover

Heisman Trophy finalist Cam Ward will be a likely first-round pick if he declares for the 2025 NFL Draft but he’s on track to play on Saturday to cap off a historic season. After throwing for nearly 7,000 yards in two years at Washington State, Ward threw for 4,123 yards and 36 touchdowns while also adding four rushing touchdowns and a receiving touchdown.

The Hurricanes have also largely ducked major losses to opt-outs and the transfer portal, though No. 3 receiver Isaiah Horton has left for Alabama. However, Xavier Restrepo (1,000-yard receiver) and Damien Martinez (1,000 scrimmage yard running back) are both expected to be in action on Saturday to help lead a Miami offense that averaged 44.0 points and 538.3 yards per game (first nationally in both categories). See which team to pick here.

How to make Iowa State vs. Miami picks

The model has simulated Miami vs. Iowa State 10,000 times and the results are in. The model is leaning over on the point total, and it’s also generated a point-spread pick that is hitting in well over 50% of simulations. You can only see the model’s pick at SportsLine.

So who wins Iowa State vs. Miami in the 2024 Pop-Tarts Bowl, and which side of the spread hits well over 50% of the time? Visit SportsLine now to see which side of the spread to jump on, all from the advanced model that is up well over $2,000 on top-rated spread picks since its inception, and find out.

The highly anticipated Pop-Tarts Bowl is just around the corner, and fans are buzzing with excitement as Miami takes on Iowa State in what is sure to be a thrilling matchup. Both teams have had successful seasons thus far, but only one can come out on top in this bowl game showdown.

As we look ahead to the game, it’s important to consider the predictions, odds, and betting lines. According to a proven college football model, Miami is favored to win with a predicted score of 35-28. However, Iowa State is not to be underestimated, as they have shown great resilience and skill throughout the season.

In terms of odds and betting lines, Miami is currently listed as a 3-point favorite, with the over/under set at 63.5 points. This indicates that the game is expected to be high-scoring and closely contested, making it a must-watch for college football fans.

Ultimately, this game is shaping up to be a true battle of talent and determination. Both teams have worked hard to earn their spot in the Pop-Tarts Bowl, and they will undoubtedly leave it all on the field in pursuit of victory. Cam Ward missed out on the College Football Playoff, the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game and the Heisman Trophy.

He’s not missing one more chance to play for Miami.

Ward and the 15th-ranked Hurricanes (10-2) take on 18th-ranked Iowa State (10-3) in the Pop-Tarts Bowl on Saturday, both teams looking for an 11th victory — something Iowa State has never done and something Miami hasn’t done since 2003.

And for the most part, both teams expect their full rosters to play Saturday. It’s not a meaningless game to either side.

“I think both programs are built on values and principles and team — and the reality is team is all the way until the end of the season, not till halfway through the season,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. “I know we are very fortunate that we’ve got a great senior class that has stood for the right thing for multiple years in our football program. I think when your seniors believe in those values, it really trickles down from the top down, and so we are really fortunate to have great leadership.”

Ward has thrown for 4,123 yards and 36 touchdowns this season, both of them Miami school records. But Miami lost two of its final three games, missing out on the ACC title game and CFP field, and Ward finished fourth in the Heisman voting.

It seemed like Ward had nothing more to accomplish. The modern trend would have been for him to opt out of the bowl game and begin preparing for the NFL draft. Ward is bucking that trend.

“Modern-day conventional wisdom sometimes clashes with principles and values of what is right,” Miami coach Mario Cristobal said. “Nowadays in college football, we are compensated at all levels — coaches, players, administrators — and to do a job, you must finish the job. I think Cam’s DNA, his upbringing, everything that he is made of and stands for is the right kind of stuff, the stuff you want your team made of. … He understands the importance of finishing.”

The Cyclones were in line for a playoff spot as well but lost in the Big 12 championship game to No. 10 Arizona State.

    State champions

Miami went 4-0 against fellow Florida schools this season, 3-0 against FBS-level opponents from the Sunshine State. And a win on Saturday would give the Hurricanes 11 wins this season, which would be one more than rivals Florida and Florida State had combined.

“Over the last three years, there’s been a ton of progress,” Cristobal said. “First time Miami has been undefeated at home for a long, long time. First or second 10-win season in maybe 20 years. State champions for the first time in a long time. A lot of things accomplished and a lot more to accomplish.”

Iowa State takes to the air

The Cyclones have two of the nation’s best receivers, a third-team AP All-American in Jayden Higgins (1,183 yards) and Jaylin Noel (1,077 yards).

That made them the first pair of Iowa State receivers with 1,000 yards each in a season and the only pair to hit that mark nationally this season.

To put that in some perspective: Iowa State has had only one other receiving duo both reach 800 yards in a season before. That would be last year — when Higgins and Noel did it.

    Don’t forget about defense

While the headlines will center on the high-powered offenses and passing attacks from these two schools and teams, their defenses will be under the spotlight, too.

With both the Hurricanes (359.3 pass yards per game) and the Cyclones (254.6 pass yards per game), among the top passing teams in their respective conferences, their pass defenses will have a lot of pressure to perform. But they are not so easy to crack either.

Iowa State led the Big 12 giving up 161.7 pass yards per game. Meanwhile, Miami was third in the ACC giving up 209.8 pass yards per game.

    Toaster trophy

The Pop-Tarts Bowl made headlines last year by promoting an edible mascot. The winning team indeed saw the mascot lowered into a giant toaster before the machine popped out a giant pastry for Kansas State to devour.

This year, not only will the winning team get the chance to eat a giant Pop-Tart after the game, but the bowl game unveiled that the trophy is an actual working toaster — should the winning team want to eat a traditional version on the ride home.

Cristobal and Campbell were presented with freshly toasted Pop-Tarts out of the trophy Friday morning.

    First meeting

Iowa State and Miami have never played and the coaches were asked Friday if they’d like to see the schools schedule one another.

“It would obviously be great to look at those particular options,” Cristobal said.

    With a caveat.

“Except for late November up there,” he added. “Aside from that, I think it would be a great idea.”

As the college football playoff picture becomes clearer, some teams are left on the outside looking in. The Miami Hurricanes and Iowa State Cyclones are two such teams, but they still have something to play for in the upcoming Pop-Tarts Bowl.

While both teams may have fallen short of their playoff aspirations, they still have the opportunity to end their seasons on a high note. The Pop-Tarts Bowl provides them with a chance to showcase their talents one last time and finish the season with a win.

For Miami, this game will be a chance to prove that they belong among the elite teams in college football. Despite facing some tough competition throughout the season, the Hurricanes have shown flashes of brilliance and will be looking to put it all together in the Pop-Tarts Bowl.

Meanwhile, Iowa State will be looking to cap off a successful season with a statement win. The Cyclones have had a strong showing this year and will be looking to build on that momentum heading into next season. A win in the Pop-Tarts Bowl would be a great way to end the season on a high note and set the tone for the future.

So while they may have been left out of the playoff, the Miami Hurricanes and Iowa State Cyclones still have plenty to play for in the upcoming Pop-Tarts Bowl. Fans can expect an exciting and competitive matchup between these two talented teams as they battle it out for one last victory.

Miami vs. Iowa State prediction, pick, Pop-Tarts Bowl odds, spread, live stream, where to watch, TV channel

No. 13 Miami and No. 18 Iowa State will clash in one of only three bowl games outside the College Football Playoff including two ranked teams. As you’d expect in this situation, it’s also a battle between two teams who came up just short of their goals.

Miami began its season with nine straight wins. It was a favorite to win the ACC and earn a College Football Playoff berth before losing two its final three games, including in its regular-season finale against Syracuse. The Hurricanes’ season included plenty of close calls, but they ultimately couldn’t balance the tightrope.

Iowa State started 7-0, but it felt like consecutive losses to Texas Tech and Kansas had knocked it out of Big 12 title contention. They did not. The Cyclones responded with three straight wins, and when results elsewhere went their way, they found themselves in the conference title game against Arizona State. They came up short in the end.

This will be the first time the programs have met on the gridiron, but not the first time they’ve played in this game. This will be Miami’s seventh appearance in the game (though the first since 2016 when it was the Russell Athletic Bowl), which is more than anybody else in history. Iowa State is appearing for the third time, which ties it for the sixth-most.

Miami vs. Iowa State: Need to know

Cam Ward says he’ll play, but that’s subject to change: Cam Ward’s incredible season included a trip to New York as a Heisman finalist. He’s also considered one of the top quarterback prospects in the draft class. These are all the makings of a situation where a player opts out of the bowl game, but for now, Ward plans to play in the game. If he does, it would be a huge boost for the Canes and their chances of winning the game. It could also lead other players with similar decisions to make to follow suit.

Iowa State won 10 games for the first time in program history: While the Cyclones’ season ended with a 45-19 beatdown from Arizona State in the Big 12 Championship, it was still an incredible season. Even more remarkable, the Cyclones have won eight games or more in a season just 11 times, and Matt Campbell has been the coach for four of them. He is the only Iowa State coach to record both a 10-win and a nine-win season in program history. Campbell appears to be building one of those “they’re going to name the field after him one day” legacies in Ames.

A Pop-Tart will lose its life: If you didn’t watch last year’s Pop-Tarts Bowl you missed one of the greatest spectacles in recent bowl game history. For, you see, after the game, the Pop-Tart mascot gave its life and descended into a giant toaster where it was burned to delicious perfection and then consumed by victorious Kansas State players and coaches. This season it will be one of three different Pop-Tarts who receive the glorious honor of being eaten by the victors.

    Pop-Tarts Bowl prediction, picks

I’m making this pick with the understanding that Cam Ward intends to play. If that holds true, I think we’re in for a very fun contest. If both teams are close to full strength this will likely be a shootout. Miami has spent its entire season scoring points and giving them back, and Iowa State has been in plenty of shootouts itself. Pick: Over 55

Prediction: This game is sure to be a close and thrilling contest, but I predict that Miami will come out on top with a narrow victory over Iowa State.

Pick: My pick for this game is Miami, as I believe they have the edge in talent and experience.

  • Heat president Pat Riley says Miami will not trade Jimmy Butler

Heat president Pat Riley says Miami will not trade Jimmy Butler

Miami Heat president Pat Riley has made it clear: The team is not letting go of Jimmy Butler anytime soon.

On Thursday, Riley responded to a report from ESPN’s Shams Charania that Butler wanted to be traded, saying that the team is not planning on trading him.

“We usually don’t comment on rumors, but all this speculation has become a distraction to the team and is not fair to the players and coaches,” Riley said in a statement released by the team on Thursday. “Therefore, we will make it clear: We are not trading Jimmy Butler.”

Charania reported Wednesday that Butler “prefers” a trade away from Miami prior to the Feb. 6 trade deadline, but that he had not officially requested a trade. Charania had reported that Miami was open to offers for Butler, who was looking at potential championship teams like the Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets.

Riley’s statement, while stating that the team will not trade Butler, does not clarify whether the 35-year-old forward had discussed or wanted a trade.

Butler, a six-time All-Star, has been with the Heat since 2019, and has led the team to the postseason in five of his six full seasons, including two trips to the NBA Finals.

Butler is currently averaging 18.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.9 assists this season.

Miami and Butler were unable to agree on a contract extension this summer, and Charania reported Wednesday that Butler does not plan to exercise his $52 million player option, which would make him a free agent in July.

In a recent statement, Miami Heat president Pat Riley made it clear that the team has no intentions of trading All-Star player Jimmy Butler. Riley emphasized that Butler is a crucial part of the Heat’s success and is an integral part of their future plans.

Despite speculation and rumors swirling around about potential trades involving Butler, Riley shut down any possibility of the team parting ways with the talented forward. He praised Butler’s leadership, work ethic, and competitive spirit, highlighting how he has elevated the team both on and off the court.

With Butler playing a key role in the Heat’s recent success, including leading them to the NBA Finals in 2020, Riley’s statement reaffirms the team’s commitment to building around their star player. Fans can rest assured that Butler will continue to be a cornerstone of the Miami Heat franchise for the foreseeable future.

    What to Know

The Miami Heat and the Orlando Magic will round out the year against one another at 7:00 p.m. ET on Thursday at at Kia Center. The Heat are no doubt hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses.

The Heat are headed into this one after the oddsmakers set last week’s over/under low at 210.5, but even that wound up being too high. They enjoyed a cozy 110-95 victory over the Nets on Monday. The win was a breath of fresh air for Miami as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead the Heat to victory, but perhaps none more so than Bam Adebayo, who went 8 for 12 en route to 23 points plus seven assists and seven rebounds.

On Monday the Magic overcame some tough odds to get past the Celtics. The Magic managed a 108-104 victory over the Celtics. The win came about thanks to a strong surge starting at the 1:02 mark of the second quarter, when Orlando was facing a 58-43 deficit.

Miami now has a winning record of 14-13. As for Orlando, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 19-12.

Keep an eye on the arc in Thursday’s game: The Heat have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having averaged 14.6 threes per game. It’s a different story for the Magic, though, as they’ve been averaging only 11.5. Given the Heat’s sizable advantage in that area, the Magic will need to find a way to close that gap.

Not only did both teams in this Thursday’s match win their last matches, they also took care of their bettors and covered the spread. Going forward, the Magic are expected to win a tight contest, barring any buzzer beaters. They might be worth a quick bet since they’re sitting on a nine game streak of covering the spread when playing as the favorites at home.

    Odds

Orlando is a slight 1.5-point favorite against Miami, according to the latest NBA odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Magic as a 1-point favorite.

The oddsmakers are predicting a defensive showdown and set the over/under low at 208 points.
