Miami Heat’s Tyler Herro Earns First NBA All-Star Berth
As a rookie, an injury kept Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro from participating in the Rising Stars Challenge during NBA All-Star Weekend in Chicago.
This time, Herro will finally get to experience the feeling of being a participant in the weekend. On Thursday, he was chosen by the coaches as an Eastern Conference reserve. The announcment was made on TNT.
This marks Herro first All-Star appearance. He now joins fellow Kentucky alum Bam Adebayo as Wildcats to earn the honor as members of the Heat.
Herro has been the team’s best player this season despite the Jimmy Butler saga and inconsistency from Adebayo. Herro is averaging a career-high 24.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.4 assists. This is his finest season since he won the Sixth Man of the Year in 2022.
Herro has steadily developed into one of the league’s best players. After entering the NBA with a repuation as a shooter, he has proven he can impact the game in several areas.
This season, he’s improved as a rebounder, facilitator and defender.
Herro and second-year forward Jaime Jaquez are the Heat’s only representatives during the weekend. Jaquez was selected to the Rising Stars Challenge for a second straight season. Last year he also participated in the slam dunk contest.
All-Star Weekend takes place Feb. 14-16 in San Francisco at the home of the Golden State Warriors.

Miami Heat’s rising star Tyler Herro has been named an NBA All-Star for the first time in his young career. The 21-year-old guard has been a standout player for the Heat this season, averaging 20.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game.Herro’s impressive play on both ends of the court has not gone unnoticed, as he has quickly become a fan favorite in Miami and around the league. His ability to score from all over the court, as well as his tenacity on defense, has made him a key player for the Heat.
This All-Star nod is a well-deserved honor for Herro, who has worked hard to improve his game and help lead the Heat to success this season. Congratulations to Tyler Herro on this incredible achievement, and here’s to many more All-Star appearances in his bright future. #NBAAllStar #TylerHerro #MiamiHeat

MIAMI — And now the reality check.
Because the next big thing for the Miami Heat remains a work in progress, as evidenced by the pounding Erik Spoelstra’s team received in Wednesday night’s 126-106 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers at Kaseya Center.
The thought when Spoelstra finally relented and moved 7-foot rookie Kel’el Ware into the starting lineup alongside 6-9 Bam Adebayo five games ago was the Heat no longer would be a team getting sand kicked in their faces by bigger opponents, no longer to be dominated on second-chance points and points in the paint.
And then arrived quality opposition in the form of the Eastern Conference leaders, and, so . . . sand was kicked in their faces by bigger opponents, and the Heat were dominated on second-chance points and points in the paint.
“We’re a bigger front line and this needs to be corrected,” Spoelstra said. “There are no excuses now. We have to be a lot more physical and purposeful on the glass.”
The numbers were evidence of the ire, with the Heat outscored 68-38 by the Cavaliers in the paint, 20-10 on second-chance points, with an overall 47-35 rebounding deficit.
It was a reminder that for all of Ware’s length, it also is 20-year-old length, leaving last June’s No. 15 pick out of Indiana very much a work in progress.
“I mean, we’re still working through things, trying to figure out how we can obviously get better through these ups and downs and be more consistent,” said Adebayo, who closed Wednesday with 21 points and nine rebounds, to only five points and nine rebounds from Ware. “Obviously the second-chance points is a big problem that we’ve got to hone in on, but it’s not just ’cause we got two bigs out there you think you’re going to fix a problem.
“You’re trying to add pressure to a rookie that just really started getting his minutes and started to get his feet wet. So I don’t really look at it in that sense. But we do, collectively, as a group, have to get better in rebounding.”
In addition to the issues on the glass, the matchup against the Cavaliers’ defense exposed the work-in-progress element of the Heat’s dual-big approach, with a lack of proper spacing suffocating the offense.
“That’s what we’re talking about a lot,” said guard Terry Rozier, who along with Tyler Herro led the Heat with 22 points Wednesday night. “We’re watching a lot of film, seeing how we can feed off one another.”
The goal, Rozier said, is something closer to what the Cavaliers feature with dual big men in their lineup, with Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley both closing with double-doubles on Wednesday night.
“Obviously you see their two bigs. I think that’s what we’re trying to get to with our offense, where they’re playing well off one another,” Rozier said. “It’ll happen, it’ll happen. We’ve got two bigs that space the floor. Sometimes it can be a problem. Sometimes it can be helpful. We’ve just got to find that.”
For all the hype, the Heat stand 2-3 with Ware as a starter.
“It’s a work in progress,” Adebayo said. “It’s been a small sample size, so you’ve got to work through it. Everybody’s going to point that out, because it’s like, ‘Oh, that’s the glaring,’ because that’s supposed to be the fix. There’s going to be ups and downs to this.”
With Wednesday decidedly down, as the Heat dropped back to .500, at 23-23, with a four-game trip up next, starting Saturday against the San Antonio Spurs.
It was against the Spurs two weeks ago that sparked the decision by Spoelstra to move forward with Ware as starter.
Before that game, the acceptance was of Ware as a work in progress. Now the ante has been raised with Ware as a starter.
“There’s a lot of decision making there,” Spoelstra said of Ware’s increased responsibilities. “One, you have to defend with purpose and intent and physicality and without fouling, not giving up the short hooks or things right at the rim at a high rate.”
And, on the other end, work in lockstep with the offense.
“We had a really crowded paint,” Spoelstra said of the loss to the Cavaliers. “I don’t think there was a whole lot that we were doing consistently that was hard to guard.
“There were some really poor spacing possessions, poor decision possessions, some poor shot-selections possessions, and then we’ll figure out a shot distribution from there.”
But patience, Herro said, not panic.
“Still working through it,” he said. “Obviously it’s new for us, playing two bigs. So still working on the spacing. Like I said the other day, some nights it’ll look better than others.”

Kel’el Ware-Bam Adebayo: A Work in Progress for Miami HeatAs the Miami Heat continue to strive for success in the NBA, one player who has shown immense potential is Kel’el Ware-Bam Adebayo. Adebayo, the 6’9″ power forward/center, has quickly become a key player for the Heat, providing strong defense, rebounding, and scoring in the paint.
However, Adebayo is still a work in progress. At just 24 years old, he has plenty of room for growth and development. His offensive skills are improving, but he still has room to expand his scoring repertoire and become a more consistent threat on that end of the floor.
Defensively, Adebayo has already established himself as one of the top big men in the league. His ability to guard multiple positions, protect the rim, and switch onto guards has been crucial for the Heat’s success. However, there is always room for improvement, and Adebayo can continue to refine his defensive skills and become an even more dominant force on that end of the floor.
Off the court, Adebayo’s work ethic and dedication to improving his game are evident. He is constantly working on his craft, whether it be in the weight room, on the court, or studying film. His willingness to put in the work and strive for greatness is what sets him apart from other players.
As Adebayo continues to develop and grow, he has the potential to become a perennial All-Star and a key piece for the Miami Heat for years to come. With his combination of size, skill, and work ethic, the sky is the limit for Kel’el Ware-Bam Adebayo.

When Kel’el Ware was drafted 15th by the Miami Heat last June, it wasn’t certain when the Indiana product would break into Miami’s rotation — after all, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra focuses more on the game ahead than he presumes anything about the big picture.
Concentrating on a given possession is how Spoelstra has remained dialed in enough to routinely churn out winning seasons, deep playoff runs and a Hall of Fame resume.
In Ware’s case, though, many onlookers have simply been curious and excited about the 7-footer’s NBA potential, even as he took some time to find his stride in the pro ranks. But Ware’s growing presence in Miami’s lineup has offered promising flashes of the future while raising the team’s ceiling amid an up-and-down season. The rest of the NBA world is now taking notice of Miami’s prized rookie, who was sent down to the G League last month to get more playing time and shorten his learning curve for the pro level.
Ware has become the favorite to win this season’s Rookie of the Year, according to Bovada. If he does take home the honor, the 20-year-old would be the first Heat player to win the award. Kendrick Nunn (second in 2019), Dwyane Wade (third in 2003-04) and Caron Butler (third in 2002-03) have the highest voting finishes in franchise history.

“I know that Kel’el generates a lot of opinions out there — let us do our job,” Spoelstra told reporters on Jan. 19. “Let him do what he’s been doing. The initial thing was to get him comfortable, get him in a role where he could impact the game, and the second unit has been coming along. It’s been one of our bright spots in the last several weeks, and he’s been getting really comfortable in that role. And what he’s done with his play and ability to impact the game is earn more. That’s what you want to see. That’s what you want all players to do: earn more, make us watch you, make us have to play you, make us have to think about not playing you and make us continue to figure out other things and just keep you on the court. That’s what he’s doing right now.”
Nobody around the Heat has been shy about Ware’s upside, but the payoff has been exciting nonetheless.
His shot-blocking has made it frightening for aspiring shooters to so much as toe a line into the paint, let alone try scoring against his 7-foot-4 wingspan. That credible reason to induce hesitation is why teammate Bam Adebayo enjoys playing alongside Ware, as the latter’s presence allows Adebayo to blitz pick-and-rolls and roam the perimeter for defensive stops. While Adebayo has established himself as arguably the most versatile defender in the NBA, this allows him to essentially play free safety on defense. In the last week, according to NBA.com, the Heat are allowing only 91.6 points per possession in the 58 minutes Ware and Adebayo have shared the court, which would easily make for the league’s best defensive rating over an entire season. Opponents are shooting just 38.1 percent against Miami’s new defensive duo in that span.
Although Miami endured a 125-96 road loss to the Milwaukee Bucks last Thursday, there were more promising flashes of Ware and Adebayo playing alongside one another. In that game’s early stages, when the Heat held a 15-3 lead during the first quarter, Ware focused on Damian Lillard as Lillard came off a double-screen before driving to the lane. Ware showed his quick feet and kept up with Lillard, who attempted a layup after Adebayo swatted at the ball during the drive attempt before collecting the rebound.
For much of the season, Ware has spent time in the gym to get his weight up and better position himself against stronger NBA veterans. In the second period of that Milwaukee loss, Bucks center Brook Lopez sealed off Ware for positioning before taking the entry pass and attacking the rim, but Ware used his quickness and length to recover and block Lopez’s layup attempt. Notice Adebayo sealing off Giannis Antetokounmpo away from the ball, which Adebayo hopes becomes commonplace as he and Ware play together more.
“I get back to switching a little bit, guarding my yard — not being in a drop zone all year,” he said. “It’s a good switch-up for us.”
On offense, Ware has already shown promise as a credible floor-spacer because of his shooting touch; he ranks second among Heat players in 3-point shooting percentage since New Year’s Day (41 percent, behind only Jaime Jaquez Jr.’s 44 percent).

But before Ware is placed in any 3-point shooting contests, Miami will embrace his penchant for getting easy shots in the paint. Since Jan. 1, he’s shooting 72.7 percent on shots from within 5 feet of the rim, has finished 17 of 19 alley-oop attempts and flushed 34 total dunks. During Miami’s 106-97 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday, Ware wasn’t efficient on offense (3-of-11 shooting, no free-throw attempts), but he still warranted attention as teammates attacked the paint.
Here, Jaquez drove the lane for a second-quarter drive as Nets center Nic Claxton stepped up to contest what would’ve been an attempted floater … until Jaquez simply lobbed the ball for Ware to slam it home.
In the first half of Miami’s loss to Milwaukee last week, Tyler Herro got caught in the air with onlooking Bucks defenders before tossing the ball in the air for his rookie big to do the rest.
Such an adjustment is something Herro looks forward to building on after expressing optimism about Ware’s promise well before oddsmakers started taking notice.
“I love playing with Kel’el,” Herro said last month. “I just look forward to the growth of our chemistry, our two-man action — and then, the growth of Kel’el himself. He’s been really, really good since we’ve gotten him. From the beginning of training camp, you see the glimpses, the skill set … just the raw versatility that he brings on both ends. He’s so effective defensively, just protecting the rim, making everything difficult. And then, on offense, you see the lob threat. You just throw it up there, and he goes and gets it. I love playing with guys like that.”

Magic at Heat picks and predictions
Prediction
Heat 106, Magic 104
Moneyline
BET HEAT (-110).
Miami is the hotter team, as Orlando is still just one game removed from a 5-game skid. The Heat are also 11-9 at home this season, while the Magic are just 9-14 on the road.
The Heat won the last head-to-head meeting and are 3-1 in the last 4 vs. the Magic in Miami.
Be aware that if Orlando’s offense is getting back to normal, as is suggested by Saturday’s victory over Detroit, then it will be very hard for the Heat to beat the Magic.
Against the spread
PASS.
I like the Heat to cover here as +1.5 (-120) underdogs, but I prefer their odds on the moneyline, as the payout is greater and less than 5 percent of NBA games land on exactly 1 point.
Pass, and bet the moneyline and/or O/U instead.
Over/Under
LEAN OVER 208.5 (-105).
The Over has hit in 3 straight Heat home games and is 24-20 for Miami this season. For Orlando, the Over is 2-1 in its last 3 road games. The Over has also hit in 3 of the last 4 meetings and is 3-1 in the last 4 in Miami.
This is a lean because Orlando’s offense has been horrible as of late, averaging just 98.2 points per game in January, and the Under is 28-19 for the Magic this season.

We are looking at the worries people have and what this could mean for costs at the grocery store this morning on News Center 7 Daybreak.
TRENDING STORIES:
Nearly four million commercial chickens and more than 86,000 commercial turkeys in Darke and Mercer counties were confirmed positive for bird flu by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in 10 reports on Jan. 23 and Jan. 24, according to the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA).
More than 1.9 million birds have been “depopulated.” ODA’s procedure is to quarantine the impacted facility and to depopulate, or kill, the birds to prevent the disease from spreading.
ODA’s report indicates that the process of depopulating the remaining 1.8 million birds is ongoing.
Another 190,000 commercial chickens have been depopulated in Darke County but is unclear if they tested positive for bird flu, according to ODA’s report.
A grocery store customer told News Center 7 that she was not happy at possibly paying higher grocery store prices.
“That’s a big number, because the poultry farmers, they got to destroy all of the chickens and turkeys and left them to drive up the price of food in the grocery store,” said Stephanie Diaz.
The exact location of where these birds were in the Miami Valley was not initially released.

#big #number #million #positive #cases #bird #flu #Miami #ValleyBrooklyn Nets vs. Miami Heat preview: Vince Carter gets his jersey retired!
Cold outside, and colder on the court. The Brooklyn Nets took on a reeling Phoenix Suns team on Wednesday night. However, the home team couldn’t heat it up and lost by 24 points. It extended the losing streak to four and home losing streak to six.
The opponent tonight is still within playoff range, but it won’t be easy to get there. The Miami Heat have been dealing with a lot, but Erik Spoelstra always has his guys ready to compete. They didn’t help themselves on Thursday night as they got dominated by the Milwaukee Bucks and lost by 29 points. They have some cushion for ninth place in the Eastern Conference standings ahead of the Chicago Bulls, but that can always slip away if they’re not careful.
Where to follow the game
YES Network on TV. WFAN on radio. Tip after 6:00 p.m. ET.
Injuries
No Bojan Bogdanovic, Cam Thomas, Maxwell Lewis, Ziaire Williams, De’Anthony Melton, or Trendon Watford. Cam Johnson missed Wednesday’s game with a right ankle sprain. He’ll miss at least the next week. D’Angelo Russell missed the game due to left hamstring tightness injury management. He is listed as questionable due to personal reasons. Ben Simmons has been dealing with an illness. He’s questionable as well.
Could CamJ have played his last game in Brooklyn? The Nets have five games before the trade deadline and he may not play any of them.
Dru Smith and Josh Richardson are out. Somebody else is missing, which we’ll get to momentarily.
The game
Miami won the first meeting. These teams wrap up the season series in February.
So, there’s a lot going on. Jimmy Butler wants his money. The initial plan was to ball out this season and cash out in the summer. The plan hasn’t been working well, and he wants out of Miami. The Heat in turn have upped the passive aggressiveness in words and in deeds. And now…
Long breakups tend to the most difficult and troublesome. There’s a lot to think and feel about Butler, and Katie Heindl of Basketball Feelings walks us through it:
To go back to the chyrons, because I can’t quite get over them, it strikes me not as an aberration that Butler might have, or may still, do or say something disruptive to the Heat, to Riley’s streamlined club, to the tidy bounds of basketball — the latter is a fantasy anyway. It actually strikes me as a feat. To have your public presence be given the weight of a weather event or existential crisis; to be heralded.
Personalities are a dime a dozen. In our rapid-fire age of creators and clipping the most mundane moments of our days as worth chronicling, personalities shift with the algorithm. Presence, on the other hand, has weight. A slow build, usually a lifetime in the making, with no way to affirm or vet one other than through gut reaction. Your eyes catch, cannot be pulled away; the hairs on your arms go up. You feel magnetized, heedless to the pull. You can’t fit that on a chyron.
True indeed. At the mothership, Jayson Buford has more:
Before he was suspended, Butler was lazy, taking threes where he would have driven the paint, jogging back when he would have ran back. Even teammates like Bam Adebayo questioned whether his heart was it. Looking at Butler now is like looking at an outsider, distrustful of the government above him. Spoelstra and Riley are now calming the fuss in an attempt to keep the conversation about what the team is doing on the court. Is it possible that, despite all of his arrogance, Butler is in the same predicament — feuding with his bosses who are tired of his immaturity — as the rest of the players in the league?
It appears so.
In the meantime, Tyler Herro is the lead option for Miami. He’s been dealing with a bit of a groin injury, but he’s available tonight. He’s taken on a bigger role on offense this season, and it’s been paying off. He’s at career highs in points (24 per game) and shooting (47.4 percent from the field and 40.4% from 3-point range). He’s a candidate to be named an All Star reserve and he would be a welcome addition to the festivities in San Francisco this year.
The Heat always find gold where you least expect it, and they may have done it again. Kel’el Ware became a permanent fixture in the rotation on December 29, and he’s been a godsend in the front court. Since the 29th, Ware has averaged around 13 points and seven rebounds a night on 59/41/72 shooting splits. So far, he’s shown himself to be a pretty good pick and roll partner.
At just 20 years old, Miami might have found a solid player that can help them hang on to a playoff spot.
Ware will do battle with Nic Claxton on the inside. We’re waiting for an impactful game from Claxton as he needs one for himself and to remind Nets fans of how good he is.
Offense is so hard to come by for the Nets. The effort is certainly there, but the results haven’t been. In January, the Nets are 29th in offensive rating at just 103.1. The only team worse? The injury ravaged Orlando Magic. With Johnson out again, it’ll be even harder for the Nets to make things shake. If Russell is back, it’ll give them somebody who might be able to carry the team and go off in a major way.
Player to watch: Bam Adebayo
He’s the franchise, and as he goes, so goes Miami. It’s been a tough year as his numbers are down across the board and off the court drama has made the work a lot more challenging for the Heat. Even still, Bam is a very good all around center as he checks a lot of different boxes. He’s a very good passer, terrific defender, and someone who can go and get it on offense. If the Heat want to escape the play in range, they’re gonna need Adebayo to take it up a few notches.
More Noah Clowney will do the Nets good. This Nets season is about development, and the more minutes he gets, the more he gets to find his role in the NBA. He’s made at least two three pointers in five out of his last six games. Some of the misses are incredibly loud, but you have to stick with it and keep firing when you’re open. For young players, you learn by doing and with CJ out, Clowney will get another start at the four position.

Tonight, Vince Carter will have his number 15 retired by the Nets. In 4.5 seasons with the team, Carter averaged 23.6 points per game and made the All-Star Game three times. Carter was a success on the court, in the community, at the box office, and helped provide the last bit of playoff success the New Jersey Nets had. Carter was a great Net and has continued to be a fan favorite so many years removed from his playing days. It’s going to be a festive atmosphere tonight and Carter will get the love and adoration from Nets fans that he deserves.

Heat at Nets picks and predictions
Prediction
Heat 109, Nets 103
Moneyline
PASS.
The moneyline has no value either way here. The Nets have played too poorly to take as sizable home underdogs, while the Heat are too expensive to play as favorites.
Against the spread
BET NETS +8.5 (-115).
While the Nets have struggled offensively, the Heat have had issues on the defensive end. They have allowed at least 116 points in 4 of their last 5 games overall and failed to cover 3 straight on the road.
The Nets are 4-3 ATS in their last 7 games. They have alternated covers and non-covers over their last 6 games and are coming off a 24-point loss vs. Phoenix Wednesday.
Back NETS +8.5 (-115).
Over/Under
BET OVER 209.5 (-110).
The Heat have allowed at least 107 points in 5 straight games, going 4-1 O/U, and all of their main scoring options except Butler will be available Saturday.
The Nets have scored at least 101 points in 5 of their last 8 games. Brooklyn’s defense has typically not played well, allowing 112 or more points in 5 of its last 8 games.
Considering those trends, take OVER 209.5 (-110).
