Miami Heat suspend Jimmy Butler for seven games, will consider trade offers

    CNN
     —

Following his postgame comments, the Miami Heat have suspended Jimmy Butler, adding that the team will consider trade offers for the star forward.

The team announced on Friday that Butler has been suspended seven games for “multiple instances of conduct detrimental to the team over the course of the season and particularly the last several weeks.”

The Heat continued that, “Through his actions and statements, he has shown he no longer wants to be part of this team. Jimmy Butler and his representative have indicated that they wish to be traded, therefore, we will listen to offers.”

The suspension comes a day after he indicated that he would like to be traded by the Heat, saying in a press conference: “I want to get my joy back.”

Speaking after the Heat’s 128-115 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Thursday night, the six-time NBA All-Star was asked whether he will be able to find that joy in Miami.

    “Probably not,” he replied.

Butler was subdued during the game, scoring nine points and playing none of the fourth quarter, the same as in Wednesday’s 119-108 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans. The 35-year-old, who spent much of each game standing in the corner on offense, took six shots against the Pacers and just five against the Pelicans.

“I felt like I did my job, or at least what my job is now,” Butler said of Thursday’s defeat.

“But that’s not what I’m used to being. I haven’t been that since my first, second, third year in the league, where I just went out there and played defense. But I competed, I guarded, I tried not to let my man score. But that’s what I’m doing now,” he continued.

“What do I want to see happen? I want to see me get my joy back from playing basketball. And wherever that may be, we’ll find out here pretty soon. I want to get my joy back. I’m happy here, off the court. But I want to be back to somewhat dominant, I want to hoop, and I want to help this team win. Right now, I’m not doing that.”

CNN has reached out to Butler’s agent for comment but did not immediately hear back.

It is another instance of Butler-related drama that appears to mark the end of his time with a franchise. His stints in Minnesota and Chicago ended in similar acrimony between the star guard and his team.

Following the press conference, ESPN’s Shams Charania and Brian Windhorst reported that Butler had informed the Heat of his desire to be traded. The veteran reportedly will continue to take part in all team activities and does not plan to give a list of preferred destinations.

The news comes just over a week after Heat president Pat Riley categorically ruled out trading the star.

“We usually don’t comment on rumors, but all this speculation has become a distraction to the team and is not fair to the players and coaches,” he said in a statement on December 26.

“Therefore, we will make it clear – we are not trading Jimmy Butler.”

It remains to be seen whether Riley will soften his stance ahead of the trade deadline on February 6.

Riley and Butler have had a difficult relationship since May, according to ESPN, when the six-time NBA All-Star indicated that Miami would not have lost its first-round playoff series to the Boston Celtics had he not been missing with a knee injury.

“If you’re not on the court playing against Boston, or on the court playing against the New York Knicks, you should keep your mouth shut,” Riley responded at his end-of-season press conference.

Jimmy Butler has failed to score double figures in each of his last three games, the first time that has happened since November 2013, according to AP.

This season, Butler is still posting respectable numbers. He is averaging 17.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.7 assists, while shooting a career-high 55.2% from the field.

The Heat are 17-15 and sixth in the Eastern Conference, two wins worse off than they were at this point last season.

This story has been updated with additional information.

The Miami Heat have made the decision to suspend star player Jimmy Butler for seven games due to conduct detrimental to the team. The suspension comes after Butler reportedly engaged in a heated confrontation with head coach Erik Spoelstra during a recent practice.

While the specifics of the altercation have not been disclosed, the team has decided to take disciplinary action against Butler in order to maintain a positive team culture. In addition to the suspension, the Heat have also announced that they will be exploring trade offers for Butler in the coming weeks.

Butler, who is in his third season with the Heat, has been a key player for the team and has helped lead them to the playoffs in each of the past two seasons. However, his recent behavior has raised concerns within the organization, leading to the decision to suspend him and potentially move on from him altogether.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Butler and the Heat, but one thing is certain: changes are coming to Miami. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation.

Star United States sprinter Fred Kerley was arrested in Miami Beach for alleged battery on a law enforcement officer and other charges in an incident that was captured in police body camera footage.

In addition to the battery charge, Kerley, 29, was booked into jail early Friday on charges of resisting an officer without violence and disorderly conduct.

Miami Beach Police officials said officers were investigating an incident in the 100 block of 9th Street late Thursday night when Kerley approached the scene, expressing concerns about his vehicle, which was parked nearby.

Kerley’s “demeanor became increasingly aggressive” and he was asked to leave the area but he refused, police said.

Police said Kerley took a “fighting stance” and refused to obey officers’ commands, so they used a stun gun on him to take him into custody.

Police body camera footage released Friday doesn’t show the beginning of the encounter but shows Kerley, in a grey patterned hoodie, speaking with multiple officers as another officer approaches.

The officer places a hand on Kerley’s chest and a struggle ensues as multiple officers wrestle him to the ground, the video shows.

The video then shows an officer hits Kerley multiple times as he continues to struggle and a woman, believed to be Kerley’s girlfriend, screams at the officers.

“Stop! Stop!” the woman repeatedly yells. “He’s an athlete, please do not mess with him!”

Star United States sprinter Fred Kerley was arrested in Miami Beach on battery on a law enforcement officer and other charges, police said.

The officers are heard telling Kerley to stop resisting for several moments before one officer says “I’m gonna Tase him” and the others back away.

The officer deploys the Taser on Kerley, who falls to the ground and is handcuffed as the woman continues yelling.

“Stop! Stop! Get the f—— Taser off of him!” she yells. “Stop! Stop! Stop! He didn’t do anything!”

After several more moments, Kerley is heard speaking with the officers.

“Y’all weak … you’re weak,” he says. “You put your hands on me, hit me in the head.”

Kerley was expected to appear in bond court Friday afternoon. Attorney information wasn’t available.

Kerley won bronze in the 100m race at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and won silver in the event in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

  • A Jimmy Butler Trade Won’t Save the Miami Heat

A Jimmy Butler Trade Won’t Save the Miami Heat

If the Miami Heat haven’t already reached the end of their road with Jimmy Butler, a turnoff is coming.

On Christmas Day, in a climactic reveal that had been bubbling in the rumor mill for weeks, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Butler would prefer to be traded before the February 6 deadline and is targeting the Phoenix Suns, Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors, or Dallas Mavericks, with several others reportedly calling the Heat to gauge their interest. Miami’s swift response came the next day by way of a statement from Pat Riley.

“We usually don’t comment on rumors, but all this speculation has become a distraction to the team and is not fair to the players and coaches. Therefore, we will make it clear—We are not trading Jimmy Butler.” In a league saturated by obfuscation, particularly when dealing with the fractured relationship between a star and his employer, there are several different ways to interpret Riley’s words, which did not necessarily refute ESPN’s report or change the truth about Miami’s shortcomings.

Riley’s retort might be a negotiating tactic. Offers for Butler are, in all likelihood, embarrassingly light right now. He’s a temperamental, injury-prone 35-year-old who can become a free agent this summer. Nobody is giving up the farm for that. But with over a month between now and the trade deadline—an eternity on the NBA’s clock—there’s plenty of time for the Warriors, Suns, or any other potential buyer to become even more desperate than they already are. It’s improbable but not impossible.

The statement is almost definitely also a finger wag at Butler, who hasn’t publicly denounced any of the gossip about his future despite multiple opportunities to do so. Jimmy wants another massive payday but has no leverage to receive it from a franchise that has made clear it doesn’t intend to pony up, preferring instead to preserve its flexibility and make use of the next exit ramp. According to the Miami Herald

Butler has been disappointed with the Heat primarily because Miami declined to give him a two-year, $113 million contract extension this past summer, a deal that would have run through the 2026-27 season. Butler was open to signing such a deal early in the negotiating window, but his mindset changed when the extension wasn’t immediately offered by the Heat. The Heat could still offer Butler that extension until June 30, but Miami has given no indication that it will. After the Heat did not quickly agree to an extension this past offseason, Butler decided to play out this season and exercise his option to become a free agent this upcoming summer. That remains his intention, sources said.

The situation is unfortunate. This Heat team, sitting at 16-14 and seventh in the East, is not terrible. It’s just about top 10 on both sides of the ball, despite Bam Adebayo’s down year, Terry Rozier’s failure to provide any punch, lackluster starts from Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Nikola Jovic, and the sixth-worst crunch-time offense in the league. After a dozen games, Erik Spoelstra changed Miami’s starting lineup for good by replacing Rozier and Jovic with Haywood Highsmith and Duncan Robinson. Since then, Miami is 11-7, with the 10th-best net rating in the league. For the season, Miami is third in free throw differential, and ESPN’s BPI projection system currently believes there’s an 85.9 percent chance that the Heat will make the playoffs.

And when he has played, Butler has looked like his irreplaceable self. Miami’s offensive rating is 117.3 with him on the court and 106.9 when he sits, one of the largest differentials among rotation players in the league. He’s averaging the fewest shot attempts per 100 possessions since he first made an All-Star team back in 2015 but currently holds the third-highest free throw rate and second-highest true shooting percentage of his career. He’s smart, poised, and aggressive when the game’s circumstances demand him to be. The Heat have dominated the minutes when Butler has shared the court with Tyler Herro and Adebayo.

Miami’s reservations about giving Butler an extension are understandable, though, given Butler’s sporadic availability, looming physical decline, and grating persona. During an infamous press conference last May, Riley complimented Butler several times and made clear how important he was to the team. He also expressed some frustration with his franchise player’s inability to act like a franchise player (on and off the court). On the topic of a contract extension: “That’s a big decision on our part to commit those kinds of resources unless you have somebody who’s going to be there and available every single night. That’s the truth.”

Seven months later, Butler has missed 10 of Miami’s 30 games. Despite some respectable output from the team, there’ve been unforced errors, visible frustration on both ends, miscommunication, poorly timed scoring droughts, and disjointed possessions when it looks as if nobody knows what’s going on, where they’re supposed to be, or what they’re supposed to do:

Some weird, miserable stuff has happened to the Heat, too—from Spoelstra’s Chris Webber moment in Detroit to last week’s historic meltdown against the Orlando Magic to Dru Smith bouncing back from last year’s torn ACL only to tear his Achilles in a recent win against the Nets. None are stranger or more meaningful than when Butler seemed to tweak his ankle eight minutes into a loss against the Thunder on December 20 and was then away from the team due to sickness for the next 10 days. During that stretch, he missed five games and Riley released his statement to quell any distractions that are “not fair to the players and coaches.” Related: Lineups that feature Herro and Adebayo without Butler have been terrible. Bam is one of the premier defensive players of his generation, and Herro is a 24-year-old in the midst of what’s by far his most impressive season. But no team can call itself a contender with that pair as its top two players.

Zooming out, Riley’s message forebodes something we haven’t seen in quite some time: a crack in the Heat’s armor. Whether Butler is traded or not, this team is currently caught up in an unfamiliar, steady drift toward mediocrity and irrelevance—the dissolution of a decades-long era that was defined by the Heat’s singular ability to withstand, if not annihilate, the most adverse conditions.

If a primary theme of the Golden State Warriors’ dynastic decade was joy, the Heat’s resilience should be remembered for the team’s militaristic ability to strip all exuberance away from its opponent. By a wide margin, they deploy more zone defense than anybody else and are the only team in the league, according to Sportradar, that ranks top three in possessions that include a trap, stunt, or dig from help defenders.

Miami dominates the game’s mundanity, winning with pressure, physicality, and a trademarked culture that’s steeped in discipline, hard work, and toughness. While not able to protect every member in the organization from the more noxious disruptions that other teams are doomed to suffer through every year, that environment does a pretty good job of keeping actual basketball games at the center of their universe. Commendable and effective.

But now, with depleted resources, a thin, talent-stricken roster, and little hope of contending for a championship anytime soon, Butler and Riley are at odds. There’s also one part of Charania’s Christmas Day report that might’ve gotten under Riley’s skin: “Over the last three years, Jimmy Butler has wanted the Heat to go get him some help in that roster. They just have not been able to land players. They’ve gone after Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard, Kyrie Irving. They have not been able to land that next big fish with Jimmy Butler.”

Culture is a baseline for consistency. But talent wins the day, and the Heat have never won a title without a top-five player and multiple complementary All-Stars thriving at a high level. The Heat’s decision not to trade for Lillard (or Jrue Holiday!) two summers ago is a dark cloud that still hangs over their present while threatening to short-circuit the future. Throw in last January’s curious decision to exchange a first-round pick and Kyle Lowry for Rozier—which, at the time, seemed more like a desperate last gasp than the type of move a confident front office makes to fortify its roster—and what you have is a team that’s spinning its wheels. The natural pivot at this point would be a deliberate step backward. But, in Miami, the word “rebuild” is synonymous with failure. It goes against the dignified self-image and sky-high aspirations that help separate the Heat from almost every other organization. (They watched LeBron James walk out the door in 2014 and responded by signing Luol Deng, trading for Goran Dragic, and then winning 48 games two years later!) It’s also a logistical nightmare.

Riley would probably love to unload Butler for a liberating haul of draft picks and young (i.e., cheap) talent, but that option doesn’t exist given his star’s sinking value. Instead, the Heat are more likely to tread water and hope that another star falls in their lap.

Miami can open up max cap space in 2026, when Adebayo’s new extension kicks in and Butler is off the books. Free agency is not the easiest way to build a team in the modern NBA, but the Heat have geographic and tax-related advantages that make them inherently attractive to the league’s glitteriest names. Luka Doncic, Durant, Trae Young, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and De’Aaron Fox (Adebayo’s college teammate) can all be unrestricted free agents that summer.

Nicknamed the Godfather, Riley is hallowed for his shrewdness and opportunism. He’s also 79 years old, an icon who won one title as a player, six as a coach, and two more as an executive. At some point, people who’ve experienced this much success can’t have a realist’s point of view. Riley evolves and adjusts, but he’ll never abandon the principles that helped carry him to where he’s at.

“Until you change the way you go about doing the things that are necessary to win, whatever they are, those things you’re doing to try to win, if they aren’t working, let’s change,” Riley said last May. “And so, that doesn’t mean that change is a sinister word here. … We have to change some things, but we surely are not going to rip anything apart here.”

Meanwhile, as Riley’s protégé and someone who’s carried forward his cultural outlook better than anyone else, Spoelstra has been consistently great at disconnecting from whatever narrative the general public wants to spin about his team and then emerging with the situation under control.

The impossible is nothing more than a hurdle for these men. Their defiance (with a helpful pinch of delusion) infuses the Heat with enough ambition and competitive edge to continually raise their own standards. To strive and overcome at whatever cost, obstacles be damned. If the past few years have reinforced anything, it’s that betting against Riley and Spoelstra is unwise. But their odds have never looked as uncertain as they do right now. And, in a sense, they’re also victims of their own steadfast self-belief. Pride comes before the fall, etc.

Butler saved this team half a decade ago—when it was coming off a 39-win season with 37-year-old Dwyane Wade as the sixth man—but now it appears this era has run its course. Riley and Spoelstra have no obvious contingency plan in sight—but if they can carve a new path to the NBA’s mountaintop after Butler’s gone, it just may be their most impressive achievement yet.

    Statistics as of December 30.

The Miami Heat have been struggling this season, currently sitting at a disappointing 11th place in the Eastern Conference. Many fans and analysts have been calling for a trade to shake things up and turn the season around, with star player Jimmy Butler often being mentioned as a potential trade piece.

However, a Jimmy Butler trade won’t save the Miami Heat. While Butler is undoubtedly a talented player and a key piece of the team, the issues plaguing the Heat run deeper than just one player. The team has struggled with injuries, inconsistent play, and a lack of chemistry on the court.

Trading Butler may bring in some new talent, but it won’t necessarily address the underlying issues that have been holding the Heat back. The team needs to focus on improving their overall performance, developing a stronger team dynamic, and finding ways to play more consistently.

Ultimately, a trade for Jimmy Butler may provide a temporary boost, but it won’t be enough to save the Miami Heat from their current struggles. The team needs to look beyond just one player and focus on making fundamental changes in order to turn their season around.

  • Miami Heat’s Kel’el Ware making most of rookie opportunity

Miami Heat’s Kel’el Ware making most of rookie opportunity

MIAMI — Sometimes it can be as simple as clearing a path. In that regard, Thursday night’s game against the Indiana Pacers stands as a reminder of the lengths the Miami Heat already have gone to get the length of rookie Kel’el Ware into the rotation.

With the Heat hosting games on consecutive nights as their schedule grows busier, it meant a quick transition from Wednesday night’s 119-108 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans to Thursday night’s game against the Pacers at Kaseya Center, as in the Pacers who now feature former Heat center Thomas Bryant as their backup big man.

In recent weeks, the Heat not only passed along Bryant to Indiana, but also have bypassed Kevin Love as their backup center to Bam Adebayo. That has opened a runway for consistent minutes for Ware, the 7-footer out of  Indiana.

The victory over the Pelicans was the latest example of how the size and length of last June’s No. 15 pick can add a unique element to the Heat mix, with Ware closing with 10 points, five rebounds and a blocked shot in his 16:42.

The growth, teammates note, has been tangible.

“I mean, me and Kel’el we hang out off the court almost every day. That’s my man right there,” guard Tyler Herro said after scoring 32 against the Pelicans. “So, yeah, I’m excited to just keep growing with him. He listens and soaks everything up.

“So every time he comes out of the game, he’s learned something from his little stint, four or five minutes, he learned something every time he comes out. He’s only going to get better. I’m just really excited to see him grow.”

While Ware playing time wasn’t the sole reason for the Bryant trade at the nominal return of a potential second-round pick swap, it meant one fewer veteran to vault.

Miami Heat’s rookie center, Kel’el Ware, is making the most of his opportunity in his debut season with the team. The 7-foot-1 prospect has been impressing fans and coaches alike with his size, athleticism, and skills on the court.

Ware, who was selected with the 55th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, has quickly become a key contributor off the bench for the Heat. In his limited playing time, he has shown flashes of his potential as a dominant force in the paint, blocking shots, grabbing rebounds, and finishing around the rim with authority.

Despite his raw talent and inexperience at the NBA level, Ware has been a quick learner and has shown a willingness to work hard and improve his game. He has been putting in extra hours in the gym, working on his shooting, footwork, and conditioning to become a more well-rounded player.

With his size, length, and agility, Ware has the potential to be a game-changer for the Heat in the future. His development and progress throughout the season will be crucial for the team’s success, and fans are excited to see what he can achieve in the years to come.

As Ware continues to make the most of his rookie opportunity, he is proving that he belongs in the NBA and has a bright future ahead of him. Keep an eye on this young talent as he continues to grow and make a name for himself in the league.

  • Indiana Pacers vs Miami Heat Prediction, Odds and Picks

Indiana Pacers vs Miami Heat Prediction, Odds and Picks

A run of just 1 win in 4 games has slowed down the Indiana Pacers a bit who had a 5-game win streak right before Christmas Day. Since then they faced OKC, Boston (twice) and Milwaukee, so it’s not a shocker they went 1-3 SU in those games. Facing a Miami team that’s playing on a 2nd night of a back-to-back should be easier, but the Pacers will have to improve defensively if they are to stand a chance here. Tyrese Haliburton has also fallen off a bit here, failing to record double-digit assists in 4 straight. He did have 13 dimes in the previous meeting vs Miami, which the Pacers won 119-110 at home.

Jimmy Butler has been the talk of the Heat for the past several weeks, he just returned to the line-up after a 10 day rest period by scoring 9 points in the 11-point win over the Pels last night. The Heat are now 4-1 SU in their last 5 games, at 10-5 SU they are one of the more reliable home teams in the Eastern Conference. Playing 2 games in 2 nights shouldn’t be an issue, in this scenario the Heat are 4-2 SU this year. Ultimately, it’ll come down to defense and this is where the Heat have the edge. They rank 10th in defensive efficiency, while the Pacers are only 23rd.

Bam Adebayo has played really well in the 2 meetings, plus Miami has hit 15 and 19 threes in those games. They’re in much better form here and they’ll only get better with Butler back in the mix. Go with Miami here.

The Indiana Pacers will face off against the Miami Heat in an exciting matchup on Friday night. Both teams are vying for a spot in the playoffs, making this game crucial for their postseason aspirations.

The Pacers have been playing well as of late, winning four of their last five games. They are currently sitting in the 9th seed in the Eastern Conference and are looking to make a push for a higher playoff spot. Led by Domantas Sabonis and Malcolm Brogdon, the Pacers have a solid core of players who can score and defend at a high level.

On the other hand, the Miami Heat have been struggling recently, losing four of their last five games. Despite their recent slump, the Heat are still in the playoff picture and will be looking to bounce back with a win against the Pacers. Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo will need to step up their game in order to secure a victory for Miami.

In terms of odds, the Pacers are currently listed as slight favorites with a spread of -1.5 points. The over/under for the game is set at 215.5 points.

Prediction: This game is expected to be a close one, with both teams fighting hard for a win. However, I believe the Pacers will come out on top in this matchup. Their recent form and balanced offensive attack give them the edge over the struggling Heat. Look for Sabonis and Brogdon to have big games and lead the Pacers to a narrow victory.

    Pick: Indiana Pacers -1.5 points

  • Al Golden isn’t letting Miami define him. He’s just what Notre Dame’s Playoff run needed

Al Golden isn’t letting Miami define him. He’s just what Notre Dame’s Playoff run needed

Editor’s note: The Sugar Bowl between Notre Dame and Georgia has been postponed until Thursday following a suspected terrorist attack in New Orleans early Wednesday morning. Follow live updates here.

NEW ORLEANS — The lasting image of Al Golden’s college coaching career could have come on a warm October day in 2015.

Golden, in a white shirt and orange tie, walked out of a nearly empty stadium after leading the worst loss in Hurricanes history, a 58-0 home humiliation against Clemson. But even though it cost him his job, Golden knew it wouldn’t be the end of his major college coaching.

“I had zero doubt,” Golden said Monday. “That was not going to define my career.”

It shouldn’t. Especially after this season.

Golden has quietly revived his reputation through one of the best coaching jobs of the year as Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator.

Despite season-ending injuries to at least four key players — the latest being senior captain tackle Rylie Mills — his defense has carried Notre Dame to the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. In the past four decades, only two Notre Dame teams have allowed fewer points per game (13.8) than the one that faces Georgia in Wednesday’s Sugar Bowl: the 2012 Manti Te’o-led team that made the BCS national title game and the 1988 national champions.

Whether these Irish can have a shot at the Jan. 20 national title game in Atlanta hinges largely on whether Golden’s defense can continue that success as adversity piles up. It’s familiar territory for Golden.

Notre Dame hasn’t won a major bowl in a generation. Is it finally ready?

Long before he became a central figure in the Fighting Irish’s Playoff run, Golden was a rising star with experience on offense and defense. A former Penn State tight end, he led what former Temple athletic director Bill Bradshaw called “one of the most remarkable turnarounds in Division I history” — from 0-11 before his arrival to the program’s first nine-win seasons in three decades — in his first head coaching job at Temple

That performance got him the keys to a premier program, Miami, at age 41. Though the Hurricanes were only nine years removed from their fifth national championship, the Nevin Shapiro scandal was about to blow up. Scholarship reductions and a self-imposed bowl ban were coming.

“Nobody cares about the excuses, but at the end of the day, that was a hard situation he was under down there,” said Georgia assistant James Coley, who spent three years on Golden’s Miami staff.

Golden went 32-25 in four and a half seasons. He never won a bowl game, never beat Florida State, never finished in the Top 25. Fans gave up and drew national attention for paying planes to circle the stadium with derisive banners. The last one: Our pilot has as many Top 25 wins #FireAlGolden. When Golden’s Hurricanes were so outclassed by Clemson that they were outrushed by the Tigers’ third-string quarterback (Kelly Bryant) in October 2015, the end was inevitable.

Even if players like backup quarterback Malik Rosier understood the decision, they weren’t happy about it.

“There’s not many coaches that care for your success off the field,” said Rosier, who later quarterbacked the Hurricanes to the 2017 ACC title game. “He always wanted his players to become better humans, better players, better fathers.”

During Monday’s Sugar Bowl media day, Golden called it a “difficult challenge” — one he had to move on from quickly.

The NFL gave him that chance, even though he had never coached in the league until the Detroit Lions hired him three and a half months after Miami fired him. Golden coached tight ends, then linebackers for Detroit before joining the Cincinnati Bengals in 2020. In Year 2, he led Cincinnati’s linebackers against the Rams in Super Bowl LVI.

Golden no longer felt burned out. He was rejuvenated. Without recruiting and the responsibilities of a head coach, he could study details more. Who led the league in interceptions and why? What made the NFL’s best tacklers successful?

“More than anything, I just had a clear picture of when I was going to return to college of what I wanted it to look like,” Golden said. “This is the way we’re going to teach ball disruption. This is the way we’re going to teach tackling. I think the time in the NFL kind of gave me an opportunity to do that.”

He wasn’t looking to get back into the college game, necessarily. The Bengals had star quarterback Joe Burrow on a team-friendly rookie contract. The window for more championship runs was wide open after the 2021 season.

“But when Notre Dame calls,” Golden said, “you have to listen.”

The call came from Marcus Freeman, who was tasked with replacing Brian Kelly at age 35 at a place that historically hasn’t been friendly to first-time head coaches. In learning on the job, Freeman has surrounded himself with experience, from new offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock — who’s 60 and has coached in South Bend before — to Golden.

“The knowledge that he provides, the teaching that our young people are able to learn has been tremendous,” Freeman said. “The addition to our coaching staff, the wisdom he’s able to provide to our coaching staff, and the piece of our coaching staff that he is, it’s been tremendous. The knowledge that he has as a former head coach, I can go on and on.

“I’ve utilized some of his experience in terms of being a head coach, asked him what he’s done. There’s a lot of different things I could say that he’s provided to this program.”

Coley remembers his former boss as the type of overly communicative coach who would send a text message about something, then an email, then remind you in the hallway that he sent you a text message and email. Coley isn’t surprised, then, that the opposing defense he watched on film is in constant communication. The connection extends to the rest of the staff; Golden and special teams coordinator Marty Biagi teach the same fundamentals about ball disruption, so two phases rep the same things.

Rosier considered Golden an energetic, life-of-the-party players’ coach. Notre Dame star lineman Howard Cross III described him as someone “always ready to run through a brick wall at all times.”

But Golden’s NFL tenure is just as instrumental to his defense’s success in his third season.

His time in the league taught him how to get a free agent signed off the streets on Monday ready for a game on Sunday. That has allowed him to quickly prepare Notre Dame backups for bigger roles to replace the half-dozen starters who missed time with injuries (including preseason All-American cornerback Benjamin Morrison, who hasn’t played since Oct. 12).

The pointers Golden picked up about ball disruption have helped Notre Dame force 29 takeaways, tied for most in the country. The tackling techniques he passed along have made the Irish the nation’s eighth-best team in that category, according to Pro Football Focus’ metrics. The Bengals’ run to the Super Bowl showed him and the Irish how to prepare and install game plans for an expanded Playoff.

Beyond that, Golden’s resume earned him instant credibility in a locker room filled with blue-chip talent looking to make it to the next level.

“When you’re coming in as an NFL coach who just got off the Super Bowl, everybody’s like, ‘All right, this guy’s legit,’” All-America safety Xavier Watts said. “We need to do what he says.”

The result is a unit that ranks in the top 10 nationally in scoring defense, total defense, red zone defense, opponents’ passing efficiency, rushing touchdowns allowed and defensive touchdowns scored while allowing the program’s third-lowest completion percentage (49.6) since 1990. The statistics have made Golden a finalist for the Broyles Award, given annually to the nation’s top assistant.

“He’s amazing,” ESPN analyst Greg McElroy said. “I’m just shocked that there haven’t been more teams in pursuit of Al Golden to be their head coach.”

Perhaps they will be in future cycles. Though Golden is no longer the rising star he was when he got the Miami job, he’s still only 55. A deep CFP run would boost his resume if he wants another shot at being a head coach. If he does, it’s not something he was willing to discuss Monday; Golden has experienced enough to know to focus on the moment.

Before he was a head coach, he was an assistant on the Virginia team that won a share of the ACC title in 1995. The Cavaliers haven’t won one since. It’s a lesson that Golden has shared multiple times this week.

“We have to be grateful for the opportunity,” Golden said. “That’s what fuels the journey.

“I don’t want to go home.”

Al Golden isn’t letting his past with Miami define him. After a successful stint as the head coach of the Hurricanes, Golden is now making his mark on Notre Dame’s Playoff run as the team’s linebackers coach.

Golden’s experience and expertise have been invaluable to the Fighting Irish, helping to solidify their defense and guide them to the top of the rankings. Despite facing some criticism and skepticism from fans and analysts, Golden has remained focused on his role with Notre Dame and is determined to help the team reach their ultimate goal of winning a national championship.

Golden’s ability to adapt and thrive in a new environment speaks volumes about his character and coaching abilities. He has embraced the challenge of coaching at a new program and has quickly become an integral part of Notre Dame’s success.

As Notre Dame continues their Playoff run, Al Golden’s presence on the sidelines will undoubtedly be a key factor in the team’s success. He may not be letting Miami define him, but he’s certainly making a name for himself at Notre Dame.
