Lance Guidry fired as Miami Hurricanes Defensive Coordinator

The Miami Hurricanes defense failed repeatedly during the ACC portion of the schedule and then the bowl game this past season, allowing an average of 30.6 points and 363.4 yards over the eight conference games … and then allowing 42 points in the Pop-Tarts Bowl loss to Iowa State. For perspective, the ACC numbers would have ranked No. 106 and No. 63 in the nation compared to other teams’ entire seasons, respectively.

Now defensive coordinator Lance Guidry has paid the price and has been fired.

“I want to first thank Coach Guidry for his contributions to the University of Miami,” Head Coach Mario Cristobal said. “In a continuous effort to always improve all aspects of our program, I have decided to make a change on defense. We will move forward and make decisions that provide our players, staff and program the best opportunity to win and develop at the highest level.”

Guidry’s 2023 defense was fairly successful, ranking No. 24 in total defense and No. 42 in scoring defense. But the 2024 group appeared confused many times and struggled with communication. Busts were the result too often.

Now the search is on for a top-level coordinator to take over. It’s likely that to-be-determined coordinator will bring some new staff in as well, so stay tuned for more attrition.

Mario Cristobal now is hiring his third defensive coordinator entering his fourth year at the head of the Miami program. But this was a move that became necessary because of the way Miami ended the season and essentially wasted a career-season by Cam Ward, the offense and coordinator Shannon Dawson.

Hopes were high when Guidry arrived that his attacking style of defense would be a perfect fit for the Canes, but an issue was the pressure his 4-2-5 put on cornerbacks that needed to hold up in one-on-one coverage. In 2023 with Jaden Davis, Te’Cory Couch, Daryl Porter, Jr. and Damari Brown at corner backed by safeties Kam Kinchens and James Williams, his defense looked fine.

But of the above, only Brown and Porter returned this year, and Brown was injured almost all season. Portal additions were relied upon at DB but just didn’t really work out – safety Meesh Powell was up-and-down, CB D’yoni Hill struggled and former transfer CB/nickel Jadais Richard also wasn’t a difference-maker. It didn’t help that LB Francisco Mauigoa wasn’t the same guy the team saw in 2023, perhaps in part due to a lingering injury. Up front DE Rueben Bain was injured early in the year and wasn’t dominant when he returned, and DE Tyler Baron faded after a strong start to the year – he wound up coming off the bench by the end of the season.

The personnel failures were compounded by the confusion that was apparent on defense, with players seemingly every game having reps or two with too many men on the field … or their arms in the air looking to the sidelines or at each other prior to the snap.

As this Miami team looks to the 2025 season, the portal will likely need to be relied on heavily as there are not many proven guys returning.

Up front Bain and Akheem Mesidor return, but the team loses Baron, CJ Clark and Simeon Barrow. DT Ahmad Moten was decent in limited reps, and perhaps former 5-star DT Justin Scott can stand out in Year 2. It’s a very young and unproven group of linemen on the roster, so veteran talent in the portal is going to be a priority.

At linebacker with Mauigoa gone the team will also likely look to the portal for at least one more addition. Miami has back Wesley Bissainthe and Jaylin Alderman, and younger guys like Raul Aguirre and Bobby Pruitt had decent performances in limited reps.

Which brings us to the secondary. CB OJ Frederique is the main proven guy there, and perhaps Brown as well based on him starting four games as a freshman and looking good. Safety Zaquan Patterson also had some moments as a true freshman and could shine as a sophomore.

The portal has already added several players to the defense: DT David BlayCB Charles BrantleyCB Emmanuel Karnley and S Zechariah Poyser.

Depending where the new coordinator arrives from, perhaps some players from that program will follow on his heels. So there will be a lot going on from a defensive standpoint.

Miami Hurricanes have announced the firing of Lance Guidry as their Defensive Coordinator. Guidry, who had been with the team for three seasons, was let go following a disappointing performance by the Hurricanes’ defense this past season.

Head Coach Manny Diaz expressed his gratitude for Guidry’s contributions to the team but emphasized the need for a change in leadership to improve the team’s defensive performance. The search for a new Defensive Coordinator is already underway, with the Hurricanes looking to make a strong hire to bolster their defense for the upcoming season.

Miami fires DC Lance Guidry after late-season defensive woes

Miami fired defensive coordinator Lance Guidry on Tuesday after late-season defensive woes effectively cost the Hurricanes a chance to play for a conference championship.

Guidry spent two seasons on the Miami staff after arriving from Marshall. While Miami showed growth in the early part of the season, the Hurricanes regressed in the final month, including a 42-38 loss to Syracuse in the regular-season finale with an ACC championship game berth on the line.

Miami blew a 21-0 lead and finished the regular season with losses in two of its final three games and failed to advance to Charlotte to play for the conference title. Miami finished two spots outside the final CFP spot.

Then, in a 42-41 Pop-Tarts Bowl loss to Iowa State, Miami blew a 10-point third-quarter lead — allowing the Cyclones to score the go-ahead touchdown with 56 seconds remaining.

In a statement, coach Mario Cristobal said, “In a continuous effort to always improve all aspects of our program, I have decided to make a change on defense. We will move forward and make decisions that provide our players, staff and program the best opportunity to win and develop at the highest level.”

The Miami Dolphins have decided to part ways with defensive coordinator Lance Guidry following a late-season defensive collapse that saw the team miss the playoffs.

Guidry, who was in his first season as the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator, was unable to shore up a unit that struggled down the stretch. The team allowed an average of 30 points per game over their final five contests, culminating in a disappointing loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 18.

Head coach Brian Flores expressed his gratitude for Guidry’s efforts but ultimately felt a change was necessary to improve the team’s defensive performance next season.

The search for Guidry’s replacement will begin immediately, as the Dolphins look to bounce back and return to the postseason in 2023.

Miami Hurricanes part ways with defensive coordinator Lance Guidry

MIAMI – After a challenging season for the Miami Hurricanes’ defense, head coach Mario Cristobal announced Tuesday that Lance Guidry has been relieved of his duties as defensive coordinator.

The Hurricanes struggled defensively throughout the 2024 season, allowing an average of 23.9 points per game, which ranked 60th nationally. Within the conference, Miami gave up 30.8 points per game, placing them 14th.

Big plays were a recurring issue, with the Hurricanes surrendering nine plays of 50 yards or more. Additionally, opponents scored touchdowns on 62.9 percent of their trips to the red zone.

Tackling was another area of concern, as Miami ranked 99th nationally in tackling efficiency, according to Pro Football Focus.

In announcing the decision, Cristobal expressed gratitude for Guidry’s time with the program while emphasizing the need for improvement.

“I want to first thank Coach Guidry for his contributions to the University of Miami,” Cristobal said in a statement. “In a continuous effort to always improve all aspects of our program, I have decided to make a change on defense. We will move forward and make decisions that provide our players, staff and program the best opportunity to win and develop at the highest level.”

The Hurricanes are expected to begin the search for a new defensive coordinator immediately as they look to strengthen their program ahead of the 2025 season.

  • Inter Miami signs Diego Gomez’s replacement: A new lethal trio with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez?

Inter Miami signs Diego Gomez’s replacement: A new lethal trio with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez?

As the January transfer window approaches, MLS teams are gearing up for the 2025 season. Inter Miami, already active in the transfer market, has now secured a replacement for Diego Gomez. The signing looks to solidify their attack, potentially forming a lethal trio alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

Paraguayan midfielder Diego Gomez quickly became one of Inter Miami’s standout players after joining, excelling both centrally and on the left wing. His impressive performances caught the attention of Brighton & Hove Albion, who signed him for a reported $15 million—a significant sale for MLS. Inter Miami wasted no time in finding his successor.

According to MLS and USMNT insider Tom Bogert, Inter Miami has signed winger Fafa Picault. The Haitian player last played at Vancouver Whitecaps, but left as a free agent at the end of the 2024 season.

Picault was one of the most coveted players in the free agency, and several clubs set their eyes on the forward. He even had advanced talks with another MLS side, Austin FC. However, as Bogert reports, family reasons turned to be the driving factor that weigh in for Picault to join Inter Miami.

Picault brings a wealth of experience to an Inter Miami squad seeking the right balance of youth and veteran leadership. Since debuting in the MLS in 2017, he has played for clubs including Philadelphia Union, FC Dallas, Houston Dynamo, Nashville SC, and Vancouver Whitecaps. Last season, he tallied 9 goals and 5 assists in 1,675 minutes, showcasing his enduring effectiveness on the field.

A new Inter Miami trio: Messi, Suarez, and Picault

With Lionel Messi orchestrating play from the right and Luis Suarez commanding the central striker position, Gomez provided balance and creativity from the left wing during his time with the team. Picault now steps into that role, offering a different skill set.

While Picault may lack Gomez’s playmaking flair, he brings much-needed speed to the left flank. As Jordi Alba‘s pace has slowed with age, and Julian Gressel isn’t as dynamic in wide positions, Picault’s ability to make long runs and score goals fills a key gap for Inter Miami.

Even at 33, Picault demonstrated in 2024 that he remains a potent attacking option. His pace and positioning could complement Messi’s playmaking instincts, as the Argentine has often excelled with quick wingers capable of exploiting space—similar to partnerships Messi fostered at Barcelona and PSG. If Picault can replicate his form from last season, Inter Miami’s attacking trio might become one of the most feared in the league.

“Returning to South Florida – a place I proudly call home – gives me the chance to be closer to my family and childhood friends while bringing excitement to this passionate fútbol community. This opportunity is truly special, and I’m eager to make history with this team.”

    High standard

Inter Miami enter 2025 as record-setting Supporters’ Shield champions, having earned 74 points last season. However, they exited the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs in Round One to Eastern Conference No. 9 seed Atlanta United.

Now led by head coach Javier Mascherano, the Herons’ new campaign starts with a Feb. 18 match at Sporting Kansas City in the Concacaf Champions Cup. Their MLS slate begins on Feb. 22 vs. New York City FC (2:30 pm ET | MLS Season Pass).

Report: Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami to sign veteran Vancouver winger for next season

Inter Miami are set for a winter overhaul, as The Herons are making big moves in the transfer market. Following the departures of key players like Leonardo Campana and Diego Gomez, the club has reportedly targeted Fafa Picault to bolster their attack alongside Lionel Messi.

According to MLS insider Tom Bogert, citing sources, the free agent has signed a contract with Miami for the next season. The 33-year-old is reportedly joining The Herons, having also considered a move to Austin, but ultimately choosing Miami due to family considerations.

Last season, Picault scored nine goals and provided five assists in 1,675 mins for Vancouver. But overall, he has 220 MLS appearances, and he’s registered 56 goals and 26 assists.

While Miami has yet to confirm the signing, Picault is the latest player linked to the club. Reports also suggest Mascherano and his staff are exploring defensive options in Argentina, with Lanus goalkeeper Nahuel Losada a potential target.

Despite the attacking contributions of Messi and Luis Suarez last season, the club is also actively pursuing younger talent. Per some reports, Miami has their sights on potential talents, also from Argentina.

Miami’s targets during the transfer market

Given his experience with the Argentine youth national teams, it’s unsurprising that Mascherano is focusing on recruiting players from his homeland. Per reports, he has his sights on two wingers: Tadeo Allende and Alexis Cuello.

Mateo Moretto from Relevo reported that Miami are close to finalizing a deal to sign Allende, a 25-year-old winger currently playing for Celta Vigo. On the other hand, Uriel Lugt also reported that Miami started negotiations with Cuello, who currently plays for San Lorenzo in the Argentine Primera Division.

With Gomez and Campana out of the roster, Miami needs to strengthen their attack, especially considering that last season Messi missed almost half of the season due to injuries and international commitments.

According to recent reports, Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami is set to sign veteran Vancouver winger for the upcoming season. The player in question, who has not been named yet, is said to bring a wealth of experience and skill to the team.

This signing comes as Inter Miami looks to strengthen their squad and make a push for the playoffs in the upcoming season. The addition of a seasoned winger will undoubtedly add depth and quality to the team’s attacking options.

Fans of Inter Miami are sure to be excited by this news, as they eagerly anticipate the start of the new season. With Messi leading the way and a new signing on the horizon, the team looks set to make a strong impact in the league.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development as more details are revealed about the veteran winger set to join Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.

  • Cam Ward sets NCAA D-I mark with 156th TD pass in Miami loss

Cam Ward sets NCAA D-I mark with 156th TD pass in Miami loss

Cam Ward made NCAA history in his final college game.

The Miami quarterback threw a record-setting 156th touchdown pass of his college career Saturday, connecting with Jacolby George for a 4-yard score with 4:12 left in the first quarter of the Pop-Tarts Bowl.

That’s the Division I (FBS and FCS) record, one more than Houston‘s Case Keenum threw from 2007 through 2011.

Ward finished with three touchdown passes in the first half, pushing his total to 158. As was the plan, Emory Williams started and played the second half for Miami, which went on to lose 42-41 to Iowa State.

“Just blessed, man,” Ward told WQAM radio, Miami’s flagship station. “I think I’ve grown so much as a person this year, outside of football. This is the best team that I’ve been around. … I was just blessed to be here.”

After the loss, Miami coach Mario Cristobal was asked about the decision for Ward to sit.

“All meetings with players, and decisions like that, we made them in private, we keep them in private,” Cristobal said after the loss in a news conference that did not include Ward. “So I’ll prefer not to answer any questions as it relates to that. But I know he played his best while he was in there.”

Ward might not hold the record for long. Dillon Gabriel — whose team could play as many as three games in the College Football Playoff — has 153 touchdown passes in his career, spanning six seasons at UCF, Oklahoma and now Oregon.

Either way, Ward is assured of finishing college with one of the top careers by any quarterback at any level.

“I think Cam’s DNA, his upbringing, everything that he is made of and stands for is the right kind of stuff, the stuff you want your team made of,” Cristobal said. “He’s had a tremendous impact on our community, our team, our program, alumni.”

Ward finished with 18,189 career yards — 6,908 at Incarnate Word, 6,968 at Washington State and 4,313 at Miami — for the third most in NCAA history behind only Keenum (19,217) and Gabriel (18,423).

And when it’s all done, Ward will be on the touchdown list for a while.

The all-division NCAA record is 162 touchdown passes by John Matocha from Division II’s Colorado School of Mines from 2019 through 2023.

Tyson Bagent of Division II’s Shepherd threw for 159 touchdowns from 2018 through 2022. Braxton Plunk of Division III’s Mount Union threw for 158 from 2019 through 2023; North Central’s Luke Lehnen, whose team will play in the Division III national championship game next month, also has 158 in his career.

Ward rewrote Miami’s record book in 2024, his lone season with the Hurricanes. He will leave as Miami’s single-season leader in yards, completions and touchdown passes. He also becomes the Hurricanes’ leader in completion percentage for a season and a career.

Where the Hurricanes go from here is a different story. Miami spent most of the season in first place in the ACC and seemed on track for a College Football Playoff berth. In the end, though, it closed a 10-3 campaign with a two-game losing skid in which it allowed 84 points.

“In three games, we fell short by a play, a drive, a series,” Cristobal said. “And those things are painful. It makes you realize how all of the details of football come into play against really good teams.”

Asked about the quarterback position next season — a schedule that opens with Notre Dame at home Aug. 30 — Cristobal said that “position-wise, I think you know we always assess every position on our team, and it’s something I never discuss publicly, out of respect for our program, out of respect for the players involved.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Cam Ward, quarterback for the Miami Hurricanes, made history in a recent game against rival Florida State. Despite the loss, Ward set a new NCAA Division I record with his 156th career touchdown pass. This impressive feat solidifies Ward’s legacy as one of the top quarterbacks in college football history. Congratulations to Cam Ward on this incredible achievement! #CamWard #NCAAFootball #TouchdownKing

How to watch Houston Rockets vs. Miami Heat: NBA live stream info, TV channel, start time, game odds

    Halftime Report

The Rockets and the Heat have shown up to the game, but their offenses sure haven’t. The Rockets have a bit of a cushion as they currently lead the Heat 73-61.

The Rockets came into the match with some extra motivation after the loss they were dealt the last time these two teams faced off. We’ll see if they’re able to flip the script or if it’ll just be more of the same.

    Who’s Playing

    Miami Heat @ Houston Rockets

Current Records: Miami 15-14, Houston 21-10

    What to Know

The Heat are 9-1 against the Rockets since November of 2019, and they’ll have a chance to extend that success on Sunday. Having just played yesterday, the Miami Heat will head out on the road to face off against the Houston Rockets at 7:00 p.m. ET at Toyota Center. The Heat are expected to lose this one by 8.5 points, so we’ll see if that gives them a bit of motivation.

On Saturday, the Heat came up short against the Hawks and fell 120-110.

The Heat’s defeat came about despite a quality game from Tyler Herro, who shot 4-for-7 from beyond the arc and dropped a double-double on 28 points and ten assists. That’s the most assists Herro has posted since back in November. Jaime Jaquez Jr., on the other hand, was considerably less helpful: he went 0-5 from deep.

Meanwhile, after a string of four wins, the Rockets’ good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 113-112 to the Timberwolves. The loss hurts even more since Houston was up 106-90 with 4:57 left in the fourth.

Despite the loss, the Rockets got top-tier performance from Alperen Sengun, who dropped a double-double on 38 points and 12 rebounds. Sengun had some trouble finding his footing against the Pelicans on Thursday, so this was a nice turnaround.

The Rockets struggled to work together and finished the game with only 19 assists. They were demolished by their opponents in that department as the Timberwolves posted 25.

Miami’s defeat dropped their record down to 15-14. As for Houston, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 21-10.

In addition to losing their last games, both failed to cover the spread. As for their next game, the Rockets are the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 8.5 points. There could be an interesting gambling play in this one, as they have done quite well against the spread at home this season while Miami has struggled against the spread on the road.

The Heat strolled past the Rockets in their previous matchup back in April by a score of 119-104. Will the Heat repeat their success, or do the Rockets have a better game plan this time around? We’ll find out soon enough.

    Odds

Houston is a big 8.5-point favorite against Miami, according to the latest NBA odds.

Thursday Miami Dolphins Week 17 Injury Report

The Miami Dolphins were missing three defensive starters at practice Thursday, ahead of their Week 17 matchup against the Cleveland Browns.

Along with LB Anthony Walker Jr. (knee) and CB Kendall Fuller (knee), who were not spotted during the portion of practice open to the media, veteran safety Jordan Poyer (knee/finger) also didn’t practice despite taking part in stretching.

The other Dolphins player who didn’t practice Thursday was tackle Terron Armstead, who continues to deal with a knee injury.

The Dolphins had six players listed as limited in practice Thursday based on their injury report, including QB Tua Tagovailoa (hip) and WRs Tyreek Hill (wrist) and Jaylen Waddle (knee). The others were LB Jordyn Brooks (quad/knee), WR Dee Eskridge (knee) and FB Alec Ingold (ankle).

Tagovailoa was on the injury report last week as well, but was removed from it Friday and played the whole in the 29-17 victory against the San Francisco 49ers.

The only other player on the Dolphins injury report was WR Malik Washington, who was listed as a full participant despite a knee issue.

The Cleveland Browns had two players who didn’t practice Thursday, including starting tight end David Njoku.

The other was DE Ogbo Okoronkwo (knee), with the Browns earlier Thursday placing DT Shelby Harris on injured reserve.

Among the six players listed as limited by Cleveland was current starting left tackle Germain Ifedi, who was added to the injury report Thursday with an Achilles injury.

Also listed as limited were CB Martin Emerson (back), WR Jerry Jeudy (knee/shin), QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson (calf), WR Cedric Tillman (concussion) and QB Jameis Winston (right shoulder).

Lastly, LB Devin Bush (shoulder) and LB Khaleke Hudson (back) both were listed as full participants.

Thursday Miami Dolphins Week 17 Injury Report

As the Miami Dolphins gear up for their Week 17 matchup, the team is facing some key injuries that could impact their game plan. Here’s a look at the latest injury report heading into Sunday’s game:

    – Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is listed as questionable with a thumb injury. The Dolphins are hopeful that he will be able to play, but his status will likely be a game-time decision.

    – Wide receiver DeVante Parker is dealing with a hamstring injury and is also listed as questionable for Sunday’s game. His availability will be a major factor in the Dolphins’ passing attack.

    – Linebacker Jerome Baker is questionable with a knee injury. His presence on the field would be crucial for the Dolphins’ defense, so his status will be closely monitored leading up to game day.

    – Defensive end Shaq Lawson is questionable with a shoulder injury. His ability to pressure the quarterback could be a key factor in the Dolphins’ defensive game plan.

    – Safety Bobby McCain is listed as doubtful with an ankle injury. His absence would be a significant blow to the Dolphins’ secondary.

Overall, the Dolphins are dealing with some key injuries heading into their Week 17 matchup. However, the team is hopeful that they will be able to field a competitive roster on Sunday. Stay tuned for updates as game day approaches.
