  • UCLA head coach Mick Cronin talks Aday Mara’s improved defense, Mara and Bilodeau lineups (TRANSCRIPT ADDED)

Mick Cronin: [Banter about how cold it is.] For us, this is frigid–a high of 60 today.

HOW IS TYLER DOING AND HOW ARE DYLAN’S CRAMPS CONSIDERING IT SEEMED LIKE THEY HAD BEEN FIXED?

[Shrugs] Tough to say, buddy. I mean, he’s had cramping issues for three years and it’s gone as high as everybody at UCLA Medical–it’s gone to the neurodepartment. People fly here from all over the world to give the best of the best, so it’s not like we haven’t, you know, people that are–don’t email me with ideas, OK, because my main Dr. [Benjamin] Ansell, who’s the best at UCLA, gets our guys into every specialist that we need to get into at UCLA Medical–it’s been looked at from all angles. I think it’s one of those things where they’ve helped him a lot, but it’s creeped back up again. I don’t know if he was always too excited–it’s not all just like, you know, eat a banana, it’s more in-depth than that.

    OR FLUIDS?

Yeah, it’s not just that. Look, we have a routine with him and our people are the best from the doctors down to Tyler Lesher, and Dylan knows it, so there’s a routine he goes through every day before the game, day of the game, so.

THINGS HE CAN DO WITH DIET?

All of it. All of it–diet to fluids to supplements.

HOW IS IT FOR A PLAYER TO HAVE TO HANDLE ALL THAT?

You’d have to ask him that. I mean, for most Americans it’s really hard to handle diet and exercise–you’re young, though, so you’ll see.

    TYLER BACK AT PRACTICE?

Well, we were off yesterday, we just did recovery. Look, this is a long stretch of games for us, a long stretch. I’m very, very concerned about our emotional gas tank, just mentally, just gave them a mental break yesterday where we just did recovery stuff–trained the guys that haven’t played–we’ve got guys redshirting–and just hitting them with constant scouting reports. You know, basketball players, they care, but they’re human too–back to your question about, you know, how is it to–I’m sure it’s a lot for Dylan to do all his pre-prep stuff and he does a great job with it, but for teams in general to get constantly hit with another scouting report and another practice, as a coach, you’ve got to try to assess when you think they’re on overload. When you’ve got a long stretch of games, you’ve got to try to do everything you can to make sure they’re ready to play on game night, so you know, look, as coaches, we’re all paranoid, we live life paranoid about everything, but the older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve realized less is more sometimes.

ASSESSING OVERLOAD HARDER TO DO THIS YEAR VERSUS LAST YEAR IN PAC-12?

Oh, yeah. Look, in the Pac-12, it’s a layup–you get in a routine. From January on, you’re off Sunday, you’ve got your routine of how you handle Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, how you handle your Friday in between, I mean, it’s just a routine.

    HAVE YOU HAD TO ADJUST?

Totally. Well, I mean, we knew it–it’s not like it was. I knew once they announced we were going to the Big Ten it was going to be night and day. So you’re not in a routine–every week is different. Obviously, you get a little bit–when’s our next game after Oregon?

    TUESDAY AGAINST MICHIGAN STATE?

Yeah, so I’ll give them a whole day off Friday and then you’ve got three days of prep–pick your day you want to go hard. Now it’s just, how do you make sure they’re ready at game time and get some prep–you’ve got to get some prep work in and make sure they’re ready at game time.

ONCE TYLER GETS BACK, YOU’LL HAVE A NICE PROBLEM BECAUSE YOU’VE GOT A LOT OF GUYS FOR A LIMITED NUMBER OF MINUTES AT THE 3-4-5 SPOTS?

Yeah, I just don’t see that–I wouldn’t word it that way, so I’m not sure what you mean by ‘problem.’ I don’t see that as a problem.

TOO MANY GOOD PLAYERS AND NOT ENOUGH MINUTES?

Well, no, I wouldn’t say that. I think maybe the Boston Celtics have too many good players. I don’t see that we have anybody on the draft lottery board; I love my guys, they’re great–I know what you’re getting at, Aday’s playing better, OK, but I don’t see anybody picking us for the Final Four, so strategically, if you look back, there were times when we played Aday and Tyler together. I think Eric played too much in the USC game and I said that to you in postgame–some guys, they’re going to give you what they’re going to give you whether they play 27 minutes or 36 minutes, so that extra nine, they don’t give you anything because they’re tired and they hurt your defense whether it’s Mick Cronin or Elmer Fudd out there–the name of the person’s irrelevant. There’s very few guys–Kobe’s an exception, Jaime Jaquez–guys that can play–seniors, usually it’s a senior–they can play huge minutes with no dropoff. So I don’t see it as a problem–I see a problem the other way. Now, hopefully, with Aday, we don’t have to play guys that shouldn’t be out there because you’ve got to make sure you’ve got guys out there that are being effective and are not just out there to be out there, so that’s how I look at it. So I think the more pertinent point of all that is, can Aday and Tyler play together? Defensively, can Tyler, he’s going to have to play out on the floor more from a mobility standpoint, which obviously Eric can do that. That’s the bigger issue, so that’s the problem.

WHEN YOU’VE BEEN SEEING THAT LINEUP THIS YEAR …

I actually have gone back yesterday and looked at minutes they played together.

WHAT WERE YOUR TAKEAWAYS, DEFENSIVELY ESPECIALLY?

Well, it was based off of who we were playing. It’s a bigger challenge if the guy they’re guarding is a really tough matchup of, extremely fast guy where Tyler gets caught in switches. Or, like, in the USC game, there had been times in the season where they had taken Agee out and played Agbo at center–now we would have had a real problem, right, if you’ve got Aday on him. I think those are the things that you’ve got to be–if you want that lineup in and you want Tyler at the four, defensively, how are you going to handle that if he’s guarding the fourth guard and a smaller team’s playing four guards. Now, Oregon, they don’t do that, Brandon Angel and Kwame Evans, so they don’t really play where they would play like a 6-5 guy that’s a speedy guy, so it’s kind of a game to game thing.

STICK ERIC IN THERE WITH TYLER AND ADAY?

Haven’t really done that yet because again, that puts Eric on a much faster guy, which isn’t really his strength. I think he’ll be able to get there–hopefully, he’ll be able to get there. I think that would be our best rebounding team.

DYLAN HAD A LOT OF OFFENSIVE RESPONSIBILITIES LAST GAME, WAS THAT A FUNCTION OF TYLER BEING OUT?

Um, look, I think he’s playing better, I mean, Dylan, he’s playing well. You’ve got to give him credit, obviously he had a rough start to the season. I think his experience is coming through right now, maybe I’m coaching him better. You know, I give him all the credit, though. He’s playing better and I think that his cramping almost cost us the game–it cost us the game at Villanova last year, for sure–he went out the last eight minutes. Now you’re out there in the last five with a really well-coached team, coach Musselman’s been around, now. He saw it, so now he’s trapping us all over, he don’t know why but Andrews isn’t in the game, so he’s trapping us, you know, give him the ball in the pick and roll where he’s a scoring threat, you know, a lot of things you miss when he’s not out there in the last five minutes of a tough game on the road, so hopefully that’s not an issue the rest of the year.

HOW FEEL ABOUT HIGH-BALL SCREEN ACTIONS?

    With him.

    IN GENERAL?

You’d have to give me–I mean, there’s a million of them in a game, so you’d have to–they dropped it early and then they started trapping. You know, we’ve got to handle the trap better.

HOW MUCH MEAN TO HAVE A BIG CROWD COMING UP?

Yeah, I always say this–look, I appreciate the fans that come. I understand we’re not a college town. My thing is our students. We need our students. Students bring the energy. My dad’s not here now but when he gets here he’s 83, he’s only going to be so loud and he’s not going to be on his feet and nobody wants us to win more than him.

    IS HE COMING?

Nah, he’ll be here for the next homestand, so the students are the ones that bring the energy, you’ve got to get the students–the students are the key to your energy level. But I focus on the positive stuff with that. You know, I’ve been around a long time. There’s great things with every job, you know, so you’ve got to weigh it, so I won’t trade.

IS OREGON PLAYING DIFFERENT THAN WHEN YOU FIRST PLAYED THEM?

Well, Jackson Shelstad got off to a slow start shooting the ball this season, for him, and now in the last five games he’s shooting 54% from three–56% overall–in their last five games, which is as good as you’ll–it reminds me of when I had to play UCLA in 2017 and they handed me the stat sheet and I said it was Lonzo Ball’s stats, so he’s really shooting the ball well and playing well. I think he’s struggling early on and now he’s been a huge factor for them. And all these teams, we’re all the same–you add a bunch of transfers and you’re probably more cohesive. Now, the schedule’s tougher. They’re undefeated in the nonconference and I think they’re 5-4 in the Big Ten. It just shows you how hard it is; the Big Ten’s just tough.

SOMETHING ABOUT SEBASTIAN THAT MAKES HIM GOOD AS A CLOSER IN GAMES?

Well, Sebastian’s got no fear and when you’ve got a guy like that, he believes he can score at any time. So, look, he’s got his strengths, he’s got his weaknesses–his attitude’s been great all year. He’s still a young kid, he’s got to learn a lot, he’s got to learn to be more consistent and his defense has got to improve, but when you try to put a team together, you’ve got different components, so it’s nice to have a Mariano Rivera that can get a bucket–he can get you an out. We just signed somebody else to the Dodgers–didn’t we just sign another reliever? It’s unbelievable. Coach Roberts, man, I’m jealous–I’m putting pressure on him early. So it’s nice to have somebody get you a bucket when you need a bucket and it’s in his DNA; it’s the way he’s wired.

ADAY CONTESTED SEVEN OR EIGHT THREES IN LAST GAME?

Aday’s defense and rebounding are what’s gotten on the floor more and got him more minutes. I’m most impressed with that. I know he can score if he gets a fair whistle–and offensive rebound. He’s just taller than everybody; you know, it matters, he’s taller than everybody and when he puts his arms up and he can touch the rim without jumping, so the only chance you have is to throw him around and push him around at all times and he’s got to get–the more he puts his hands up and the more he fights back, the more the officials are going to actually call the foul, OK? And it makes him a huge factor rebounding-wise. But his defense has grown immensely because last year I spent half the year saying mano arriba–I mean, his hands were down so much it was unbelievable. I mean, I literally spent half the season saying manos arriba and I got tired of saying it, so now his conditioning is much better. I still think the key to him is his base on his balance, so it’s not as much upper-body strength as his lower-body strength and coordination, but also just, you build a competitive will to be able to play through fatigue and fight through tough things and you know, you learn how to get in the ring and fight the fight; it’s not a video game, and he’s just gotten in the ring and he’s learning how to throw and take punches.

BITTLE HIT A FEW THREES ON HIM IN FIRST GAME AND YOU TOOK HIM OUT, DO YOU THINK ADAY’S EXPERIENCE …

He’s gotten much better at that. But look, Nate can shoot–he’s eight for his last 22 from three. I’ve known Nate since I recruited him–he’s always been a tall guy who could shoot, so it’s just part of it. I mean, look, Aday contested those [laughs], so there’s a lot of good players in this league can make a lot of shots.

WILL ADAY EVER HAVE A THREE-POINTER IN HIS ARSENAL?

He’s got to get more arc on his–his free throws were flat. You get tired, your brain goes to mush and your mechanics break down, and his free throws, he throws a dart and he doesn’t lift his elbow. Same with his jump shot. My big thing–he has potential, he’s got to, it’s all mechanics with shooting. I’ll give you a funny one and then we’ve got to go practice, right, Alex? You watch, Bas has hit a few tough, contested threes that were big shots. I would tell you the reason he made them was they were contested because his habit is to shoot out the window instead of through the roof and now it’s [inaudible]. But because they were contested, he had to lift his elbow and finish high, therefore he shot the ball with arc, the way he should have and the way we try to work with him on, and that’s why he made them. All right, we’ve got to get ready for Oregon, so we don’t have much time.

UCLA head coach Mick Cronin recently sat down with reporters to discuss sophomore forward Aday Mara’s improved defense, as well as the potential lineups featuring both Mara and freshman guard Peyton Bilodeau. Here is a transcript of the conversation:

Reporter: Coach, Aday Mara has shown significant improvement on the defensive end this season. What do you attribute that growth to?

Coach Cronin: Aday has been putting in the work day in and day out in practice. He has a great work ethic and a willingness to learn and improve. I think his increased focus on defense has really paid off and it’s been great to see him step up in that aspect of his game.

Reporter: With Mara’s defensive prowess, how do you see him fitting into the lineup alongside Peyton Bilodeau, who has also been impressive on both ends of the floor?

Coach Cronin: Aday and Peyton are both versatile players who can contribute on both offense and defense. I think having them on the court together gives us a lot of options and flexibility. They complement each other well and I’m excited to see how they continue to develop and grow together.

Reporter: Are we likely to see Mara and Bilodeau playing together more in the future?

Coach Cronin: Absolutely. Both Aday and Peyton have earned their minutes on the court and I think they can be a dynamic duo for us moving forward. I have confidence in their abilities and I’m looking forward to seeing how they perform together in different lineups.

It’s clear that Coach Cronin is impressed with Mara’s defensive improvements and sees the potential for Mara and Bilodeau to be a strong pairing on the court. UCLA fans will surely be excited to see how these two players continue to contribute to the team’s success.

  • Tyler Bilodeau injury update: Mick Cronin jokes about UCLA forward’s desire to play through pain

The UCLA Bruins were able to earn a road win against the Washington Huskies . However, along the way, it appeared head coach Mick Cronin also saw his Bruins team suffer a loss when forward Tyler Bilodeau went down with an injury.

Cronin explained following the game that Bilodeau turned his ankle and while he wanted to play through it, that wouldn’t have been the smart long-term decision for the Bruins. So, while joking about his toughness, Cronin explained why he was limited later in the game.

CLICK HERE to go to PrizePicks and use code ON3 to receive a guaranteed $50 once you play $5 in lineups!

“I didn’t like the way he was moving,” Mick Cronin said . “It’s hard for me to get a lot of info and it’s hard for a trainer to really assess things on the fly like that. He turned his ankle. So, you’re basically just looking — a kid like him, he’s going to say he wants to play. You could hit him in the head with a bat and He’s gonna says, ‘I want to play.’”

For the game, Tyler Bilodeau was unable to get a score in just three minutes played. That came after he played 31 minutes against Wisconsin in their previous game. For the season, he’s averaging 13.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.3 assists while shooting 50.5 percent from the field and 39.6 percent from three-point range. That’s while averaging 26.9 minutes per game this season.

Moving forward, Mick Cronin knows what Tyler Bilodeau is going to be important for UCLA. So, it was better for the one game to trust the team’s depth and not risk a worse injury.

“When he said he wanted to play, I put him in but I didn’t like the way he was moving. I’m more worried about his career and the rest of our season,” Cronin said.

“Like I told the team, we’ve got enough players. I’ve got confidence in you guys. We just got to care. My tirade about caring, if we act like we care, we won’t make mistakes, we’ll play smart. You’ve got to care. We’ve been an A+ in caring and mental — you can tell when a team cares.”

UCLA ended up beating Washington 65-60. Four different Bruins scored in double digits for the game. The major difference in the game ended up being three-point shooting, with UCLA making 52.9 percent from distance compared to just 22.7 percent from Washington.

Now, Cronin and the Bruins will turn their attention to the USC Trojans . That game is coming quickly on Tuesday night.

The post Tyler Bilodeau injury update: Mick Cronin jokes about UCLA forward’s desire to play through pain appeared first on On3 .

UCLA forward Tyler Bilodeau has been battling through a nagging injury, but head coach Mick Cronin isn’t surprised by his determination to play through the pain.

During a recent press conference, Cronin joked about Bilodeau’s toughness, saying, “Tyler is a warrior. He would probably play with a broken leg if we let him. But don’t worry, we won’t be putting him out there with any serious injuries.”

Bilodeau has been a key player for the Bruins this season, averaging double-digit points and rebounds per game. Despite his injury, he has continued to contribute on both ends of the court and is determined to help lead UCLA to success.

Fans can expect to see Bilodeau continue to push through the pain and give it his all on the court, as he is truly a warrior in every sense of the word.

  • UFC Vet Ben Rothwell Says BKFC Champ Mick Terrill Hasn’t Faced Anything

Ben Rothwell believes BKFC Heavyweight Champion Mick Terrill is in for a rude awakening at Knuckle Mania 5.

A 17-fight veteran of the UFC, Rothwell is now 3-0 as a bareknuckle boxer and one win away from his first world title in the BKFC this weekend. Rothwell challenges the champ Terrill in the co-main event of Knuckle Mania from Philadelphia after stopping Todd Duffee in April.

‘Rocky’ at BKFC? ‘Possibility’ Sylvester Stallone Attends Knuckle Mania this Weekend

Unlike many other fighters on the roster, Terrill never picked up the MMA gloves, bareknuckle boxing before BKFC ever came into existence. Terill’s resume includes wins over champs Lorenzo Hunt and Arnold Adams, still missing a UFC name.

“The most experienced bareknuckle fighter I have fought,” Rothwell said of Terrill, 9-1 as a bareknuckle boxer. “On the flip side, I have been fighting for a long time and I’m the most experienced fighter he’s ever faced. I know he’s never faced anything quite like me. This is a huge step for him. It’s gonna be a big wake up call for him.”

“I believe he’s just tough enough that he’s not gonna flop on the ground in 45 seconds like Todd Duffee.”

Rothwell fought the who’s-who of the UFC Heavyweight division for years, the list of names not limited to Alistair Overeem, Junior Dos Santos, Cain Velasquez, and Andrei Arlovski (twice). Inside the Octagon, ‘Big’ Ben once finished four opponents in a row.

“I try to imagine if I was him and if I was him, I don’t think about it because if you do, it’s gonna be kind of daunting,” Rothwell said. “He’s never faced anything. I fought many of these guys the best, I have faced some of the best fighters in the world, there’s no doubt about it. He hasn’t fought one in the MMA realm.”

“He wanted to fight Mark Hunt… Well, I have fought Mark Hunt, I’ve lost and I’ve beat some of the best fighters in the world. I’ve been in there for five five-minute rounds. So, it’s very important for me to give him a proper introduction to what the elite fighting class of the world are all about.”

In a recent interview, UFC veteran Ben Rothwell had some strong words for BKFC champion Mick Terrill, claiming that Terrill hasn’t faced anything in comparison to the competition he’s seen in the UFC.

Rothwell, who has competed at the highest level of MMA for years, believes that Terrill’s success in the bare-knuckle fighting world doesn’t hold the same weight as victories in the UFC.

“Mick Terrill may be the BKFC champion, but let’s be real – he hasn’t faced anything like the competition I’ve seen in the UFC,” Rothwell said. “I’ve fought some of the best heavyweights in the world, and I can tell you, Terrill hasn’t faced anything close to that level of competition.”

Rothwell’s comments are sure to stir up some controversy in the combat sports world, as fans of both BKFC and the UFC debate the validity of Rothwell’s claims.

Regardless of the outcome, it’s clear that Rothwell believes in the level of competition in the UFC, and he’s not afraid to speak his mind about it. Only time will tell if Terrill will rise to the challenge and prove Rothwell wrong.

  • Mick Cronin’s Leadership Powers UCLA’s Gritty Win Over Wisconsin

The UCLA men’s basketball team claimed a thrilling 85-83 victory over No. 18 Wisconsin at Pauley Pavilion on Tuesday night, powered by standout performances from sophomore center Aday Mara and sophomore guard Sebastian Mack. Yet, it was the strategic decisions and insights from Head Coach Mick Cronin that set the tone for the Bruins’ hard-fought win.

Cronin’s postgame reflections highlighted not only the talent on display but the adaptability and mental preparation that fueled his team.

“Obviously, Wisconsin has a really good team,” Cronin said. “They’ve won five in a row in the Big Ten. … I am extremely proud of our guys. You have to stay ready and have the right attitude.”

That readiness was evident in Mara, who came off the bench to score a career-high 22 points on a perfect 7-for-7 from the field. The sophomore from Spain had seen limited action in UCLA’s previous game but responded in a big way against the Badgers.

“The time is going to come where he [Mara] is going to have that kind of game,” Cronin said. “I commend Aday for having a great attitude and dealing with not playing in the last game and being ready tonight. He changed the entire game, no question about it.”

Cronin attributed Mara’s breakout to his consistency in practice and the matchup with Wisconsin’s size, which allowed him to thrive.

“If practice was open, I’d tell you how many times I look at the stat sheet after practice and he’s 10-for-10 or 12-for-14,” Cronin said. “He hasn’t had a fair whistle much all year; tonight, he got one. That stuff matters.”

Mack also played a pivotal role, particularly in the second half, where he scored 15 of his 19 points. Cronin emphasized Mack’s ability to thrive in the physicality of Big Ten play.

“He [Mack] reminds me of Jaren Cumberland, who was a great player for me at Cincinnati,” Cronin said. “When it’s time to play and it gets chippy, he gets really good. You have to have a guy like that on your team.”

Beyond his scoring, Cronin praised Mack’s growing leadership.

“He’s growing, talking a lot more, taking responsibility,” Cronin said. “Baz and I aren’t afraid to get in somebody’s face and tell them, ‘Let’s go.’ We need his toughness, and I need him to inject that into his teammates. It was obvious he was doing that tonight.”

One of Cronin’s critical decisions came in the final defensive possession, where he subbed in junior forward William Kyle III, who had not played much in the second half. Kyle delivered, blocking a potential game-winning shot.

“We wanted to switch everything,” Cronin said. “With Aday, you have to show and recover, and I didn’t want to get caught in a recovery. Will is a switch guy, and he can do it. Made me look smart.”

The win marked UCLA’s third victory over an AP-ranked opponent this season and highlighted the challenges of competing in the Big Ten.

“In leagues like this, you just have to win and get to the next one,” Cronin said. “You are always a week away from a losing streak, which we have found out, because you can play pretty good and still lose in this league.”

As the Bruins (13-6, 4-4) prepare for their next matchup against Washington on Friday, Cronin’s focus remains on growth, resilience and teamwork. His postgame remarks underscored the importance of staying ready, embracing leadership, and stepping up when the moment calls.

  • Mick Foley Hits His Weight Loss Goal Of 100 Pounds, Teases Royal Rumble Appearance

Mick Foley posted a new video on his YouTube channel, updating fans on his weight loss journey.

In February 2024, Foley said that he was thinking about doing one more match, as it would be a good incentive to lose weight. Unfortunately, Foley suffered a concussion while training and decided against one more match.

Ethan Page Explains How He Related To Penta’s WWE Debut

“I weighed in a 360 and I was looking to get down to 280 by June 7th and do a death match on my 60th birthday. Unfortunately, training a little bit in the ring, I got a slight concussion and I thought, ‘If I got a concussion from that little bit that I did, what I plan do to in the deathmatch would likely kill me.’ It wouldn’t likely kill me, but I thought there was a great liklehood that if I were to drop the elbow that I always wanted to drop, off a TV truck onto the hood of a car, it seriously could undo all the benefits of having my hip replacement, and that’s been a game changer for me. The hip and knee. I thought, ‘I don’t want to take that chance of feeling numb and having a serious concussion or losing the ability to walk away without discomfort,’ which the hip replacement really helped. I started to gain weight because no matter how much weight I gained, I still felt so much better than I had,” said Foley.

In March 2024, Foley weighed 360 pounds, and his all-time high was 377 pounds. He goal was to hit 280 pounds by June 7th, his 60th birthday.

Foley weighed in at 279 pounds in the video.

He credited healthier eating, working out by doing DDP Yoga and swimming, and “cheating” for his weight loss, noting that a doctor suggested he use Wegovy, and he took that advice.

“I couldn’t walk up a slight incline getting off my plane without having to sit down for 5 or 10 minutes. I thought, ‘I’m a heart attack waiting to happen.’ If I need a little help, I should take that and say I’m not going to do it all on my own and greatly reduce my chances of doing it,” he said.

Foley said he felt good after doing the Nightmare Rumble at OVW.

“I wouldn’t say I’m not entering the Royal Rumble, but I’m not entering the Royal Rumble. That’s a pretty big leap,” he said.

At the end of the video, Foley received a phone call and teased that it was from Triple H wanting to talk to him about appearing in the Royal Rumble.

Mick Foley, the hardcore wrestling legend known for his larger-than-life persona and his willingness to put his body on the line for the sake of entertainment, has achieved a major milestone in his personal life. The 56-year-old wrestler, also known by his various personas such as Mankind, Dude Love, and Cactus Jack, has been on a journey to improve his health and fitness in recent years. Foley has been open about his struggles with obesity and how it has impacted his overall well-being. Through dedication to diet and exercise, Foley has managed to reach his target weight loss goal, much to the delight of his fans and supporters.

In a recent tweet, Foley teased the possibility of making a surprise appearance at the upcoming Royal Rumble event, one of WWE’s most popular pay-per-view shows. Fans are buzzing with excitement at the prospect of seeing Foley back in action, even if it’s just for a brief moment in the ring.

Foley’s weight loss journey serves as an inspiration to many, showing that with hard work, determination, and perseverance, anyone can achieve their health and fitness goals. • Mick Foley Provides Health Update, Teases WWE Royal Rumble Appearance

WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley teases that he could appear at WWE Royal Rumble.

In a new video on his YouTube channel, Mick Foley discussed his weight loss journey. He noted that he weighed 360 pounds a year ago, and he wanted to get down to 280. Foley said that he thought he maxed out at 377 pounds. He stated that he had been training, as he was doing DDP Yoga, and he was feeling good.

Foley then did a weigh-in, and he was down to 279.9 pounds. When asked to comment on how he lost the weight, he detailed his process.

“I did it the old-fashioned way, it was really a three-step process,” Mick Foley said. “Healthier eating, working out, and I cheated. I went to a doctor, they saw me at over 370 pounds and suggested I could use a little help in the form of Wegovy. I know some people call it cheating, I just thought it was leveling the playing field. I’d lost all my strength, my metabolism was at an all-time low, I was gaining weight by the day. I couldn’t walk up a slight incline when I was getting off my plane without having to sit down for five or ten minutes.

“I thought, ‘I’m a heart attack waiting to happen,’ and if I need a little help, I should take that. So man, I’m taking it pretty easy. DDPYoga, some swimming. I’m not 21, I can’t jump into things like I did last year and think I can just go back to working out like I did when I was 21 and in pretty good shape. I feel pretty good. I’m feeling good.”

    Mick Foley’s Tease

Foley then noted that he was an entrant in OVW’s Nightmare Rumble, and he felt good after the match. When asked about the WWE Royal Rumble match, he first said that he would not be entering the match. However, the video ended with Foley seemingly getting a call from Triple H.

“I wouldn’t say I’m not entering the Royal Rumble,” Mick Foley said. “But I’m not entering the Royal Rumble [laughs]. No, that’s a pretty big leap from what I’ve been saying. [Phone rings]. Hold on, let me get this. Hm, 203? Hello? [Triple H’s theme song plays]. Hey Hunter. No, I’m doing good. You saw me in the Nightmare Rumble? I have lost some weight, yeah. I have been working out. Royal Rumble? Let me call you right back. Thanks, Triple H.”

  • Can UCLA coach Mick Cronin finally get first win against Gonzaga?

Can UCLA coach Mick Cronin finally get first win against Gonzaga?

When Mick Cronin rewatched what might have been the most excruciating loss of his career, doing so only because he needed to scout the same opponent for a rematch the following season, the final sequence was pleasing.

UCLA’s Johnny Juzang extended his right arm to snag a rebound and rose toward the basket for a putback that tied the score against Gonzaga with 3.3 seconds remaining in the overtime of their 2021 Final Four classic.

Around that moment, Cronin pressed pause.

That meant Jalen Suggs never took the inbounds pass, never frantically dribbled just a few steps past halfcourt and never launched the shot that bounced off the backboard and through the net, breaking the heart of every Bruin.

“That shot?” Cronin told The Times this month. “No, I’ve never seen it.”

Two years later, in the NCAA tournament’s Sweet 16, the Bulldogs gave the UCLA coach another reason to selectively watch the replay. Only a few moments after Amari Bailey’s three-pointer gave the Bruin a late lead, Gonzaga’s Julian Strawther got it back with another game-winning heave on the edge of the March Madness logo at center court.

What are the chances the same opponent crushes your soul twice in essentially the same way?

“Yeah, I know,” Cronin said when reminded. “I mean, it is what it is. Hopefully, the ball bounces your way sometimes.”

Saturday would be a good place to start against the team that has tormented Cronin the most. He’s 0-4 against Gonzaga with the Bruins — and suffered another bitter overtime defeat against coach Mark Few’s team in 2009 while coaching Cincinnati — heading into a nationally broadcast clash between No. 22 UCLA (10-2) and the No. 14 Bulldogs (9-3) at the Intuit Dome.

By nature, coaches tend to hold on to losses more than wins; it’s what drives them to keep pushing, trying to be the team on the other side of the ledger. Invariably, the toughest losses are the ones that end their season.

“At UCLA,” Cronin said, “I’m 9-3 in the NCAA tournament and all three of our losses were brutal.”

Over a career spanning three schools and 22 seasons, Cronin has won 490 games. Possibly his three most painful losses — two against Gonzaga and one against North Carolina — came within the last five seasons. All were in the NCAA tournament.

Cronin said the 2021 Gonzaga loss was harder to stomach than the 2023 Gonzaga loss because the latter setback came with top defender Jaylen Clark and starting big man Adem Bona sidelined because of injuries.

“It would have been an unbelievable win without those two guys,” Cronin said. “To me, we were a massive underdog and I don’t know how much gas we had left in the tank playing without those two guys. So I don’t know how much further we’d have gone.”

The Bruins might as well have been shorthanded in the 2021 Final Four matchup given that starting guard Jules Bernard woke up that morning with a bad case of food poisoning. Severely weakened, he took just three shots and finished with five points in 18 minutes.

“Those are the things that bother me more than crazy shots or anything like that because the injuries, it’s like, you know, you can’t prepare for it, you can’t plan for it, there’s nothing you can do about it,” Cronin said. “It just happens.”

A year later, against North Carolina in the Sweet 16, forward Jaime Jaquez Jr. missed his final nine shots while playing on a badly sprained ankle that he had injured only days earlier in the final minutes of a victory over Saint Mary’s.

“I was just about to get him out” of the game, Cronin said with a dark laugh.

UCLA remained in excellent position to beat the Tar Heels even with Jaquez basically playing on one leg. The Bruins led by three points with less than two minutes to play, then everything that could go wrong for them did.

UCLA’s Tyger Campbell, left, and Jaime Jaquez Jr. react during the final seconds of the Bruins’ 73-66 loss to North Carolina in the Sweet 16 of the 2022 NCAA tournament.

(Kent Nishimura / Los Angeles Times)

A Caleb Love three-pointer was off the mark, the ball bouncing off the rim and within an inch of going out of bounds before North Carolina teammate Armando Bacot made a wild, over-the-shoulder save directly to Love, whose next three-pointer went in. Love added another three-pointer, Jaquez’s cold streak deepened with three more misses, and the Tar Heels went on to win by five points.

It was a sequence reminiscent of last weekend’s game between the teams, when the Bruins lost a 16-point lead during a 76-74 setback against the Tar Heels in the CBS Sports Classic. Of course, a December defeat never hurts as much as one in March.

“I just think that that team,” Cronin said of the 2022 version that lost to North Carolina, “we were deep enough that we could have won the title.”

Cronin acknowledged the difficulty in processing the repeated heartbreak, saying “you’ve got to grow up and be mature.”

“Yeah, it’s not easy to deal with, but look, I’ve got pretty decent perspective in life,” Cronin said. “I’m the son of a high school coach who rose to be the coach at UCLA. So if I start complaining, I don’t think many people are going to listen, nor should they. Like, nobody’s feeling sorry for me.

“So, I mean, I just think sometimes it’s not in the cards; hopefully, one day it’s in the cards for you. All you can do is keep working at it.”

Besides, one of Cronin’s biggest failures led to perhaps his greatest success. What might have happened if his Cincinnati team didn’t blow a 22-point lead against Nevada in the second round of the 2018 NCAA tournament?

“That one, I kind of put in the can,” Cronin said. “Yeah, it was brutal, but if that didn’t happen I’d probably still be there. They’d probably have given me a lifetime contract or something crazy like that and I’m not here. I probably wouldn’t be the coach at UCLA.”

As the UCLA Bruins prepare to face off against the Gonzaga Bulldogs in their upcoming matchup, all eyes are on head coach Mick Cronin. Despite his impressive coaching record and success with the Bruins, one glaring blemish remains on his resume: he has yet to secure a victory against Gonzaga.

Cronin, known for his intense coaching style and ability to rally his team in high-pressure situations, has come close to defeating the powerhouse Bulldogs in the past. However, Gonzaga’s consistently strong performance and deep roster have proven to be a formidable challenge for Cronin and the Bruins.

As the two teams gear up to face off once again, many are wondering if this will finally be the game where Cronin breaks through and secures his first win against Gonzaga. With a talented roster and a hunger for redemption, the Bruins are poised to give it their all and put up a fight against their long-standing rival.

Will Mick Cronin finally get the elusive win against Gonzaga, or will the Bulldogs continue their dominance over the Bruins? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain: this matchup is sure to be an intense and exciting showdown between two powerhouse programs.
