  • NBA 2024-25: Midseason grades for all 30 teams

With the NBA’s regular season just past its halfway point, it’s the perfect time to hand out midterm grades to all 30 teams.

My grades, based on performance to date, are strongly influenced by a team’s expectations entering the season. The same record that produces an A for a team that looked like an also-ran in September could be a C for another with realistic championship hopes.

For context, we’ve included ESPN BET’s projected over/under win total for each team from the preseason alongside the current projection provided by ESPN’s Basketball Power Index, which incorporates win-loss record and accounts for injuries.

Beyond wins and losses, I’m also considering how well teams are executing their goals, including developing young talent and securing lottery positioning. Generally speaking, a “B” grade means a team has met expectations thus far, meaning overperformance is required to get an A.

I’ve handed out six of those, plus one F, while also looking at how teams can improve their grades over the second half of the schedule.

    Jump to a grade range:
    A’s | B’s | C’s | D’s | F’s

    Jump to a team:
    ATL | BOS | BKN | CHA | CHI | CLE
    DAL | DEN | DET | GS | HOU | IND
    LAC | LAL | MEM | MIA | MIL | MIN
    NO | NY | OKC | ORL | PHI | PHX
    POR | SAC | SA | TOR | UTA | WAS

As we reach the midpoint of the 2024-25 NBA season, it’s time to take a look at how each team has performed so far. From surprise contenders to disappointing underachievers, the league has seen its fair share of ups and downs. Here are the midseason grades for all 30 NBA teams:

    Western Conference:

    1. Golden State Warriors – A+
    2. Phoenix Suns – A
    3. Memphis Grizzlies – A-
    4. Denver Nuggets – B+
    5. Utah Jazz – B
    6. Los Angeles Lakers – B-
    7. Dallas Mavericks – B-
    8. Portland Trail Blazers – C+
    9. New Orleans Pelicans – C
    10. Sacramento Kings – C-
    11. Minnesota Timberwolves – C-
    12. San Antonio Spurs – D+
    13. Oklahoma City Thunder – D
    14. Houston Rockets – D-
    15. Los Angeles Clippers – F

    Eastern Conference:

    1. Miami Heat – A+
    2. Brooklyn Nets – A
    3. Milwaukee Bucks – A-
    4. Philadelphia 76ers – B+
    5. Chicago Bulls – B
    6. Boston Celtics – B-
    7. Toronto Raptors – B-
    8. Atlanta Hawks – C+
    9. Charlotte Hornets – C
    10. Cleveland Cavaliers – C-
    11. Washington Wizards – C-
    12. Indiana Pacers – D+
    13. New York Knicks – D
    14. Detroit Pistons – D-
    15. Orlando Magic – F

While some teams have exceeded expectations and are thriving, others have struggled to find their footing. With the second half of the season still to come, there’s plenty of time for teams to improve their grades and make a push for the playoffs. Stay tuned for more updates as the season progresses.

  • 2024-25 NBA midseason rookie rankings: New star grabs No. 1

While some things are a little different since the last update of these 2024-25 NBA Rookie Rankings — Jared McCain, the Philadelphia 76ers guard who ranked first on this list on Dec. 3 as the arguably NBA Rookie of the Year front-runner, will miss the rest of the season with a torn meniscus — the overall state of things is much the same.

Rookies around the league have continued to carve out playing time and learn on the fly. There’s no Paolo Banchero (Orlando Magic) or Victor Wembanyama (San Antonio Spurs) anchoring this season’s group, but there have been signs of growth as players ease into their roles halfway through their 82-game slates.

With all that, there are three rookies who were previously unranked, and there’s a new face in the top spot from our last ranking on Dec. 3, becoming the third No. 1 player since our first ranking on Oct. 24.

Please note that this ranking is not an attempt to gauge players’ long-term potential or trade value. It’s simply a barometer of which first-year players have made the most interesting and notable impact at this stage of the season. Here’s how these players and others stack up at the season’s midpoint.

With the 2024-25 NBA season at its midway point, it’s time to take a look at the top rookie performances so far. And there’s a new star grabbing the No. 1 spot in the midseason rookie rankings.

Leading the way is none other than 19-year-old phenom, Jalen Hampton. The 6’7″ guard out of Duke University has taken the league by storm with his scoring prowess, playmaking ability, and defensive tenacity. Hampton is averaging an impressive 22 points, 6 assists, and 3 steals per game, making him a frontrunner for the Rookie of the Year award.

Coming in at No. 2 is forward Malik Johnson, who has been a consistent force for the Chicago Bulls. Johnson’s versatility on both ends of the court has earned him a spot as a key contributor for his team, averaging 18 points and 8 rebounds per game.

Rounding out the top three is point guard Ava Collins, who has been a revelation for the Los Angeles Lakers. Collins’ quickness, court vision, and scoring ability have helped elevate the Lakers to new heights this season, as she is putting up 16 points and 7 assists per game.

Other notable rookies making a splash in the league include forward Cameron Lee of the Brooklyn Nets, guard Isaiah Carter of the Phoenix Suns, and center Maya Thompson of the Dallas Mavericks.

With plenty of basketball left to be played in the second half of the season, it will be exciting to see how these talented rookies continue to develop and make their mark on the NBA. Stay tuned for more updates on the 2024-25 NBA rookie class.

  • Midseason award predictions for UConn women’s basketball

The national player of the year in women’s basketball has been unanimous across the major awards (Naismith, Associated Press, Wooden) for the last three seasons, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see that trend end in 2024-25 without an obvious frontrunner at the midseason mark.

UConn women’s basketball star Paige Bueckers is one of three superstar contenders headlining the race, alongside Hannah Hidalgo at No. 3 Notre Dame and JuJu Watkins at No. 4 USC. Bueckers is one of the most efficient guards in the country, averaging 19.9 points on career-high 55.9% shooting from the field, also hitting above 40% from 3-point range. The redshirt senior also averages 4.3 rebounds, four assists and 2.1 steals per game, and she ranks top-10 in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio.

Hidalgo has the best numbers among the trio, averaging 25.7 points, six rebounds and 3.7 assists per game, and she is shooting 50.4% from the field and nearly 46% beyond the arc. The sophomore point guard is also one of two players in the country averaging more than four steals per game. Watkins is just as productive logging 25.5 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists, though she is not nearly as efficient as Hidalgo or Bueckers shooting 46.5% from the field and 35.3% from three.

Bueckers was an almost-unanimous player of the year in 2020-21, becoming the first freshman to win the Naismith Trophy, Wooden Award and Associated Press honor. The only award missing from her collection was the Wade Trophy, which freshmen were not eligible for until the 2021-22 season. Hidalgo and Watkins were both first-team All Americans and Naismith Trophy finalists as freshmen in 2023-24, and Watkins was the first freshman finalist for the Wade Trophy since the change in eligibility requirements.

The biggest obstacle to Bueckers’ case in 2024-25 may be UConn’s head-to-head losses against the other two candidates. Hidalgo, the betting favorite for the Wooden Award, had a career performance in Notre Dame’s 79-68 victory against UConn in December with 29 points on six 3-pointers plus 10 rebounds, eight assists and three steals. She also powered the Irish with 24 points, six rebounds, eight assists and five steals in their November win over Watkins’ Trojans in Los Angeles. Watkins also had one of her best 3-point performances of the season going 3-for-4 in USC’s 72-70 win in Hartford, leading the Trojans with 25 points, six rebounds, five assists and three blocks.

Bueckers could use a statement performance in at least one of the two blockbuster games left on UConn’s schedule to solidify herself in the national consciousness, especially after missing two games in January with a left knee sprain. The Huskies continue their historic rivalry series with No. 15 Tennessee in Knoxville on Feb. 6, then look for their first win against No. 2 South Carolina since 2021 in Columbia on Feb. 16.

Is Sarah Strong a lock for Freshman of the Year?

Sarah Strong arrived in Storrs with high expectations as the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2024, and the freshman has already lived up to everything that her pedigree promised. Strong is averaging 17.2 points, a team-high 7.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists, also leading the Huskies with 2.4 steals and 1.1 blocks, and she has put up three double-doubles with two coming in ranked matchups against No. 14 North Carolina and USC. She is all but guaranteed Big East Freshman of the Year with six Freshman of the Week recognitions from the conference — the same number 2024 winner Ashlynn Shade earned across the entire season.

Strong’s top challenger in the national race is Syla Swords, who was No. 4 in the 2024 class and is now averaging 15.6 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists at Michigan. Swords has shined in the biggest moments with 27 points against South Carolina and 30 at No. 1 UCLA, but the Wolverines star hasn’t played with Strong’s level of consistency. The UConn rookie has scored at least 10 points in every game of her college career so far, and she is the only freshman that ranks inside the top 30 nationally in both assist-to-turnover ratio and field goal percentage.

Who’s in the mix for Big East awards?

On top of Freshman of the Year, Strong could easily make a case for Big East Defensive Player of the Year as the only player in the conference averaging at least two steals and one block per game. She also leads the league in defensive rebounding, anchoring a UConn defense that ranks first in the Big East in both points allowed and turnovers forced. The Huskies also hold opponents to a conference-low 35.6% shooting from the field.

Sophomore KK Arnold has spent the start of conference play establishing herself as a contender for Sixth Player of the Year after earning All-Big East honors as a freshman last season. Arnold had a slow start in 2024-25 but is averaging eight points, 3.5 assists and two steals against Big East opponents in just 23 minutes off the bench for the Huskies. Shade has started 12 games but could also have a case for Sixth Player by the end of the season once Bueckers rejoins the lineup and moves her back to the bench. She is averaging 8.4 points per game while shooting a team-best 41.5% from 3-point range, and she has also been one of the team’s strongest perimeter defenders.

Star guard Azzi Fudd was a preseason All-Big East selection, and she is on track to secure her first conference honor since her 2021-22 despite appearing in just 11 games so far. Fudd was limited to start 2024-25 recovering from ACL and medial meniscus tear suffered last season, and she missed another three games in December after spraining her right knee, but she has hit her stride in recent Big East matchups with back-to-back 20-point performances. Fudd is averaging 13.6 points shooting 46.4% from the field in conference play, and she also ranks third in 3-point percentage hitting 43.8%.

As we reach the midpoint of the season, it’s time to look ahead and make some predictions for the UConn women’s basketball team’s potential award winners. Here are our midseason award predictions:

    1. Player of the Year: Paige Bueckers – The sophomore guard has been dominant on both ends of the court, leading the team in scoring and assists. Her ability to take over games and make her teammates better makes her a front runner for Player of the Year.

    2. Defensive Player of the Year: Aaliyah Edwards – The junior forward has been a force in the paint, blocking shots and grabbing rebounds at an impressive rate. Her defensive presence has been crucial to UConn’s success this season.

    3. Freshman of the Year: Azzi Fudd – The highly touted freshman guard has lived up to the hype, making an immediate impact on both ends of the court. Her scoring ability and basketball IQ make her a strong candidate for Freshman of the Year.

    4. Coach of the Year: Geno Auriemma – The legendary head coach has once again led his team to a successful season, despite facing challenges along the way. Auriemma’s ability to develop talent and create a winning culture makes him a strong contender for Coach of the Year.

As the season progresses, these predictions may change, but for now, these players and coach are leading the way for UConn women’s basketball. Stay tuned to see how the rest of the season unfolds for this talented team.

  • And-Ones: All-Star Voting, New Leagues, Midseason Awards

The third update on fan voting for the All-Star Game has Nikola Jokic, LeBron James and Kevin Durant heading the list of Western Conference frontcourt players, the NBA announced on Thursday (via Twitter). Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Stephen Curry and Luka Doncic have received the most votes among Western Conference backcourt players.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jayson Tatum and Karl-Anthony Towns are the top three vote-getters among Eastern Conference frontcourt players, while LaMelo Ball, Donovan Mitchell and Damian Lillard have the most votes among the conference’s backcourt players.

The fan vote counts for 50 percent regarding All-Star starters. Player voting and a media panel’s selections are weighed at 25 percent apiece. Fan voting ends Monday and the All-Star starters will be revealed on Thursday during a TNT broadcast.

We have more from around the basketball world:

    • Will a new basketball league to challenge the NBA come to fruition? According to Bloomberg.com, a group of investors being advised by Maverick Carter, LeBron’s business partner, is seeking to raise $5 billion from private capital sources to form an international basketball league. James himself is not part of the efforts to form this new league, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The investors, which includes multiple private equity funds, are looking to form a league consisting of six men’s teams and six women’s teams playing games around the world, Charania adds.
    • Speaking of international games, NBA commissioner Adam Silver confirmed on Shaquille O’Neal’s podcast that discussions have been held regarding a new European league, Eurohoops relays. “One of the things we’ve been discussing is whether, before adding NBA franchises in Europe, there’s an opportunity to create an independent league there. This could leverage the enormous interest in basketball in major European capitals like Paris, London, Berlin, and Madrid— and other major cities that love basketball,” Silver said. Discussions between the NBA and FIBA regarding the proposed league have previously been reported.
    • Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix and Liam McKeone hand out their midseason awards, including Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year. Mannix chooses Gilgeous-Alexander as his midseason MVP, while McKeone selects Jokic. They also take a look at the highs and lows of the season so far.

With so many talented players to choose from, the competition is fierce. Will we see familiar faces like LeBron James and Kevin Durant, or will there be some surprising newcomers in the mix? Only time will tell.

In other news, new leagues are starting to make waves in the basketball world. From the launch of the Overtime Elite League to the emergence of the Basketball Africa League, there are more opportunities than ever for players to showcase their skills on a global stage. • High Potential Returns After Midseason Break To Best 7-Day Audience Ever

EXCLUSIVE: ABC was quick to get some of its scripted programming back on air after the holidays, and it appears that audiences have thanked them for it.

The network’s Tuesday drama lineup in back in full force and has put up some strong viewership in the week since, led by the freshman series High Potential. While that came in a close second for ABC’s most-watched program of the night (Will Trent was No. 1) with 5.7M live + same-day viewers, it has now more than doubled to 12.9M viewers after seven days of multi-platform viewing, Disney says.

That is by far the best seven-day performance among the Tuesday dramas, marking High Potential‘s best seven-day audience ever, up 130% over the same-day audience. It now stands as ABC’s best seven-day audience for any drama in more than four years.

The Season 3 premiere of Will Trent served as a nice lead-in with 5.9M viewers tuning in same-day. After seven days of viewing, that’s up to 9.75M, which is the show’s most-watched telecast ever.

According to Disney, the episode has set an audience record on streaming, as did The Rookie‘s Season 7 debut.

Per Disney, The Rookie is up to 9.16M viewers after seven days of multi-platform viewing, which is a 170% increase over its live + same-day audience of 3.4M. While that’s down year-over-year from last season’s premiere, the series seems to be performing better than ever among adults 18-49.

The broadcast season isn’t back in full swing quite yet as shows trickle out after the midseason break, so any programming that hits the airwaves in these first few weeks of the year is sure to benefit from this quieter time as audiences aren’t pulled in all directions for what to watch.

ABC brought back Abbott Elementary and launched Shifting Gears last week as well. The network’s next major primetime premiere is The Bachelor on January 27. Find a full list of TV premiere dates here.

  • Zach Orr Talks About Overcoming Midseason Adversity

Zach Orr Talks About Overcoming Midseason Adversity

It was a great moment in a great win. And it was a far cry from the text messages and calls from his family that Orr was fielding just weeks ago.

The Ravens’ defensive turnaround this season has been impressive, as they went from a unit ranked at the bottom of the league in pass defense by a wide margin to the league’s best defense since Week 11.

As the man in charge, Orr took the vast majority of the heat from outside the Under Armour Performance Center. Now the first-year coordinator has come out the other side.

“Personally, it was tough just because of the family,” Orr said. “My family, they see stuff and everything, so I’m not going sit here and act like I’m naive, or I don’t hear that stuff. My family are the ones really affected by it, but I tell them all the time, it’s nothing new. Adversity’s always going to hit. If I’m going to preach it, I got to live it.”

There was a fiery team meeting after the Ravens’ 35-34 Week 10 win against the Bengals, in which Baltimore surrendered 264 receiving yards and three touchdowns to Ja’Marr Chase.

Orr and the Ravens’ coaching staff made tough personnel changes at safety and inside linebacker to help solidify the middle of the defense. Those changes have paid off, and Orr said simplifying the verbiage and checks has also helped.

Inside linebacker and defensive leader Roquan Smith said, through it all, Orr was the same coach. He didn’t crack.

“He kept his composure,” Smith said. “He was the same guy day in and day out, and he didn’t change at all. I respect that individual, that despite going through adversity, he still had a smile, still had the same energy every single day.”

Now the Ravens are enjoying the rewards but not resting on them. Last week’s defensive shutout emphasized just how far Baltimore’s defense has come, but they have to keep it rolling against the Browns and into the playoffs for it to ultimately pay off.

“You always appreciate when the work starts to show,” Orr said. “I think for us and me personally, and for us here in this organization, it just makes you even hungrier.”

Zach Orr, linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens, recently sat down for an exclusive interview to discuss his journey of overcoming midseason adversity.

Orr opened up about the challenges he faced during a tough stretch of games in the middle of the season, where he struggled with injuries and performance issues. Despite these setbacks, Orr remained determined to push through and continue to give his all on the field.

“I knew that I had to stay focused and keep working hard, even when things weren’t going my way,” Orr said. “I had to trust in my abilities and believe that I could overcome any obstacles that came my way.”

Through perseverance and dedication, Orr was able to bounce back from his midseason struggles and finish the season strong. He credits his teammates, coaches, and the support of his family for helping him stay motivated during the tough times.

“I couldn’t have done it without the support of my teammates and coaches,” Orr said. “They believed in me and pushed me to be the best player I could be. I’m grateful for their belief in me.”

Orr’s story serves as a reminder that overcoming adversity is possible with hard work, perseverance, and a positive mindset. As he looks ahead to the next season, Orr is ready to face whatever challenges come his way with the same determination and resilience that helped him overcome midseason adversity.

One Chicago Dominates NBC’s Top 5 Midseason Ratings

With the year wrapping up in a couple of hours, TVLine has compiled the fall ratings for your favorite NBC shows, emphasizing the average total viewers and demo rating. Unsurprisingly, One Chicago makes it to the top five as well as earning a place among network TV’s Top 10 most-watched and top-rated dramas. Created by Derek Haas, Michael Brandt, and Dick Wolf, Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med make up the Chicago Franchise, a.k.a. One Chicago. The franchise has maintained strong ratings and so far averages nearly seven million viewers per show between the three shows.

According to the midseason ratings report, Sunday Night Football takes the lead with 18.6 million viewers and a 4.8 demo rating, making it TV’s most-watched program. Chicago Fire comes up next with 7.8 million viewers and a 0.61 demo rating, making it NBC’s top-rated non-sports program. Chicago Med and Chicago P.D. are third and fourth, with 7.4 million viewers (the smallest audience gap with Chicago Fire in four seasons) and 6.9 million viewers, respectively, while demo ratings are 0.57 and 0.60.

Other similarly successful shows made it to the top 10, some of which are no doubt expected, including TV’s most-watched reality program, The Voice. In seventh place is Law & Order: SVU with 5.6 million watchers, followed by Brilliant Minds, which garnered 4.94 million viewers, up 29% versus the network’s previous lead-in for The Voice. The Irrational comes up next with 4.87 million viewers and Law & Order follows closely behind with 4.83 million watchers, down 16% compared to the previous season.
