Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe declares for NFL Draft
Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe announced on Thursday that he is declaring for this year’s NFL Draft.
In an announcement on social media, Milroe thanked “my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” his family, teammates and “the entire Alabama family.”
“Football has always been my passion, and since I was a kid, I dreamed of competing at the highest level. Through every win, every tough loss, and any criticism along the way, my love and dedication to this game has never wavered,” Milroe wrote. “Each day, my gratitude for the opportunity to play this sport I love only grows stronger.

Milroe posted a career-high 2,844 passing yards in the 2024 season; his 726 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground this season were also the most he had with Alabama.
Milroe is not likely to be an early first-rounder, but it should not be much of a surprise if he does wind up being taken on the first night of the draft this April.

His college career did not end on a high note as his Crimson Tide fell to Michigan, 19-13, in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Tuesday.
In what seemed like déjà vu from the Rose Bowl the previous season, the Alabama offense was stopped by the Wolverines’ defense on fourth down on the other side of the field. Milroe went 16-for-32 for 194 yards and ran for just four.
In all, Milroe played 38 games with Alabama, completing 64.3% of his passes for 6,016 yards, 45 touchdowns and 20 interceptions; on the ground, he ran for a total of 1,577 yards and 33 touchdowns.

Alabama football ends its season for the second consecutive year with a loss to Michigan.
The Wolverines turned Alabama’s disaster-filled first quarter into a 19-13 victory over the Crimson Tide on Tuesday at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa in the ReliaQuest Bowl.
That means Alabama finishes with a 9-4 record, the first non-10 win season since 2007, which was Nick Saban’s first year as coach of the Crimson Tide.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe is entering the NFL draft after a disappointing finish to his second season as starter.
Milroe announced his decision to skip his final season Thursday on social media, two days after the Crimson Tide fell to Michigan 19-13 in the ReliaQuest Bowl.
“Football has always been my passion, and since I was a kid, I dreamed of competing at the highest level,” Milroe posted. “Through every win, every tough loss, and any criticism along the way, my love and dedication to this game has never wavered. Every day, my gratitude for the opportunity to play this sport I love only grows stronger.
“With that said, I am declaring for the 2025 NFL Draft.”
Milroe passed for 2,844 yards with 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last season. He also rushed for 726 yards and 20 touchdowns, leading an upset of Georgia. But the Tide finished 9-4 and failed to make the playoffs.
In his Alabama finale, Milroe fumbled twice, took a fourth-down sack and threw an interception on the Crimson Tide’s first four drives.
But he will finish his Alabama career with 6,016 passing yards and 45 touchdowns against 20 interceptions. He also ran for 1,579 yards and 33 scores.

Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe and linebacker Jihaad Campbell each declared for the NFL draft Thursday.
Milroe, a redshirt junior and Alabama’s starter the past two years, announced the news via an Instagram post. He thanked Nick Saban, Kalen DeBoer and his teammates, among others.
“To the entire Alabama family, thank you for embracing a kid from Texas and allowing me the honor of wearing the script ‘A.’ Representing this university has been one of the greatest honors of my life ” Milroe wrote.
Milroe finished sixth in Heisman Trophy balloting a year ago and played an integral role in Alabama winning the SEC championship and getting to the College Football Playoff.
But he had an up-and-down 2024 season, passing for 2,844 yards and 16 touchdowns but also throwing 11 interceptions. A dynamic running threat, Milroe led Alabama with 726 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns, ranking second nationally among quarterbacks. His 33 career rushing touchdowns is tied for eighth in Alabama history.
Off the field this season, Milroe was the recipient of the William V. Campbell Trophy, commonly known as the academic Heisman.
Milroe is ranked as the No. 3 quarterback prospect for the 2025 NFL draft by ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.
Campbell led the Tide in total tackles (117), sacks (5) and tackles for loss (11.5) this season, while adding two forced fumbles, an interception and a fumble recovery.
“These last three years in Tuscaloosa have molded me into a better player and a better man,” Campbell said as part of an Instagram post. “And this experience has been special and something that I will never forget.
“I feel like I am ready now to take the next step in my career.”
A first-team All-SEC selection and a Butkus Award semifinalist, Campbell ranks No. 20 on Kiper’s latest Big Board for the draft. Kiper ranks Campbell as the No. 2 draft-eligible off-ball linebacker, behind Georgia‘s Jalon Walker.
Campbell led Alabama with 11 tackles in Tuesday’s ReliaQuest Bowl loss to Michigan. The New Jersey native became a starter in 2023 and finished third on the team with 66 tackles.

What’s next for Alabama at QB with Jalen Milroe leaving for NFL?
Alabama football will have a new starting quarterback in 2025.
Jalen Milroe declared for the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday after two seasons as the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback. Now someone else will run the offense for Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer and offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan.
So, get ready for a quarterback competition.
As of today, the quarterback room will consist of Ty Simpson, Austin Mack and Keelon Russell for next season. That’s a group with plenty of potential but limited experience.
Simpson is the most experienced, and he’s never started a game before. But he will enter the offseason in pole position to win the job. Simpson, a five-star quarterback in the 2022 recruiting class, wasn’t able to grab the starting job away from Milroe in 2023 when there was a competition, but Simpson was only heading into his second season of college football then. Now, Simpson has played three seasons, serving primarily as a backup. He has logged 188 snaps over that span, per Pro Football Focus. The Martin, Tennessee native has completed 29 of 50 passes for 381 yards, no passing touchdowns but three rushing touchdowns.
“Ty with some scrambles,” DeBoer said after the Mercer game. “The long one along our sideline. People who really know and have watched Ty … you can see he’s got that ability. Can do things with his feet … Ty is tough to handle when it comes to running the football too.”
Simpson figures to have every opportunity to win the job, and there’s good reason to believe he can win it. But he will have to win it and fend off the other contenders.
Mack is the other contender with college experience, albeit limited. Mack transferred from Washington to Alabama ahead of 2024, following DeBoer. Mack graduated a year early from high school and spent the 2023 season with the Huskies. So even though he’s in his third year as part of a college program, Mack should only be out of high school two years. He didn’t play for Washington in 2023, then he saw limited action behind Milroe and Simpson in 2024. Mack completed two of three passes for 39 yards and one touchdown against Mercer this season.
“He’s really come a long way,” DeBoer said of Mack in December. “It’s fun seeing him take advantage of even the scout team reps he took and just his ability to throw the ball where he wants it. And sometimes that’s a great opportunity because if you make a mistake it’s not the end of the world, but you can keep honing in on your skills. So, he did a lot this year to help those guys with the defense and now he’s getting more and more reps. So I’m excited about his future, for sure.”
Then there’s Russell, the five-star quarterback and No. 2 prospect in the entire 2025 recruiting class, per the 247Sports Composite. The Duncanville, Texas native has a bright future ahead. But whether that means he can start right away remains to be seen.
The talent and pedigree is there. The question is whether he can get up to speed fast enough in his transition to the college game.
“He’s got the arm talent, is accurate, can throw different arm slots,” DeBoer said in December. “Then also the ability as an athlete to make plays with his feet too.”
The competition between the three figures to be fierce. Simpson will be the early favorite, but he will have his hands full fending off Mack and Russell.

Still mulling his future, Milroe elected to play in the bowl game and made the start for the Crimson Tide. Milroe was cleaner with the ball down the stretch, and he did have an impressive 40-yard rush to set up an Alabama field goal near the end of the first half. But that was the fourth time in Alabama’s last five games that Milroe failed to reach 200 yards passing.
Milroe’s Alabama career
Milroe signed with Alabama in 2021 as a four-star prospect out of Katy, Texas’ Tompkins High School. He spent his freshman season as a backup to Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young and returned in 2022, earning his first career start against Texas A&M in place of an injured Young.
Young declared for the NFL Draft following his junior season, which allowed Milroe to battle Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner and redshirt freshman Ty Simpson for the vacant starting job entering the 2023 campaign. Milroe eventually won out and, despite his benching following a loss to Texas in Week 2, returned to lead the offense when SEC play began. He was named a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award and finished his first year as a starter with 2,834 yards and 23 touchdowns passing and 531 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground.
Given his versatility, Milroe came into the 2024 season as a Heisman Trophy candidate. Though that didn’t quite come to fruition, he still tallied 3,570 total yards of offense and a whopping 20 touchdowns rushing. Milroe did throw a career-high 11 interceptions, which is more than he had from 2022-23 combined. Milroe’s 20 rushing touchdowns were the most by an Alabama QB in a single season.
Milroe’s draft stock
Milroe seems like an ideal fit for the modern NFL game with his athleticism and big arm. He’s comfortable making plays outside of the structure and, given his 33 touchdowns rushing in four seasons with the Crimson Tide, can really hurt a defense with his legs.
Milroe does still have strides to take as a passer if he wants to be a full-time professional starter. While he has the arm talent to make throws all over the field, both his accuracy and his decision-making need more fine tuning.
Though none of CBS Sports’ draft experts projected Milroe as a first-round pick in their most recent mock drafts, Milroe currently sits at No. 32 in CBS Sports’ prospect rankings, which puts him in the conversation as a Day 1 prospect. He’s also the No. 3 quarterback directly behind Miami’s Cam Ward and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, so it’s not out of the question that a QB-hungry team could take a shot at him early.
What it would mean for Alabama
Obviously, Milroe’s departure creates a vacancy at the most important position on the field. The Crimson Tide do have plenty of options to replace him.
Simpson, who signed with the Crimson Tide in 2022, served as Milroe’s backup in 2024 and will have every chance to win the job. He will have to fend off former Washington transfer Austin Mack to do so. Mack actually enrolled at Washington in 2023 and followed coach Kalen DeBoer to Tuscaloosa when DeBoer was hired as Nick Saban’s successor, so there is plenty of familiarity between the two.
Alabama also had five-star Keelon Russell, the No. 2 prospect nationally, in 2025. He will get the opportunity to compete, though it my be difficult to unseat some of the more veteran options in front of him. The transfer portal is also an option if a clear starter does not emerge through spring practice.

Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe is officially declaring for the NFL Draft.
Milroe announced his decision on social media Thursday, just days after the Crimson Tide’s loss to Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl.
“Football has been my passion, and since I was a kid, I dreamed of competing at the highest level,” his statement says in part. “Through every win, every tough loss, and any criticism, along the way, my love and dedication to this game has never wavered. Each day, my gratitude for the opportunity to play this sport I love only grows stronger.”
A permanent team captain and recipient of both the William V. Campbell Trophy and the Pop Warner College Football Award, Milroe started for the Crimson Tide for two seasons going 21 and 6 during that time.
