    Who’s Playing

Washington Huskies @ Minnesota Golden Gophers

Current Records: Washington 10-10, Minnesota 11-10

    How To Watch

    What to Know

We’ve got another exciting Big Ten matchup on schedule as the Washington Huskies and the Minnesota Golden Gophers are set to tip at 12:00 p.m. ET on Saturday at Williams Arena. The Huskies are no doubt hoping to put an end to a five-game streak of away losses.

Last Friday, Washington couldn’t handle UCLA and fell 65-60.

Washington’s loss came about despite a quality game from Great Osobor, who almost dropped a double-double on 19 points and nine rebounds.

Washington struggled to work together and finished the game with only eight assists. That’s the fewest assists they’ve posted since back in January of 2024.

Meanwhile, after a string of three wins, Minnesota’s good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They fell victim to a painful 73-51 defeat at the hands of Michigan State. The Golden Gophers were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 36-16.

The losing side was boosted by Dawson Garcia, who went 9 for 16 en route to 21 points plus five rebounds. His evening made it six games in a row in which he has scored at least 22.4 points.

Washington’s loss dropped their record down to 10-10. As for Minnesota, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-10.

Washington is hoping to beat the odds on Saturday, as the experts think they’re headed for a loss. This contest will be their eighth straight as the underdogs (so far over this stretch they are 3-3-1 against the spread).

Washington couldn’t quite finish off Minnesota in their previous matchup back in November of 2018 and fell 68-66. Can Washington avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We’ll find out soon enough.

    Odds

    Record: 11-10

Points For per Game: 68.9 ppg (272nd)

Points Against per Game: 68.9 ppg (77th)

    Adjusted Offensive Efficiency: 109.4 (125th)

    Adjusted Defensive Efficiency: 101.7 (87th)

    Strength of Schedule: 39th

    Minnesota Key Players:

    G- Lu’Cye Patterson, Jr. 6’2, 202: 10.8 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 3.6 apg, 35.8% FG, 27.1% 3pt, 73.3% FT

The Minnesota native has played at both Missouri State and Charlotte but was more of a secondary ball handler averaging 14.6 points per game last year. Now in the B1G he’s being asked to play point guard and has been very good at limiting turnovers but is having a terrible shooting season. Although his outside shot has picked up as of late making 37% of his 3-point shots in B1G play.

    G- Mike Mitchell, Sr. 6’2, 185: 11.2 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 3.0 apg, 37.0% FG, 36.5% 3pt, 73.7% FT

This is Mitchell’s 2nd season with Minnesota after he started his career playing under Lorenzo Romar at Pepperdine. He is known primarily as a long-range sniper and has shot 40% from deep for his career. This year he has cut way down on the turnovers but his shooting percentages are worse than last year across the board.

    G- Isaac Asuma, Fr. 6’3, 196: 5.7 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 2.1 apg, 43.6% FG, 39.6% 3pt, 55.0% FT

It has been a great start for freshman Isaac Asuma who was a sub-100 recruit but is playing a ton of minutes as the 6th man for Minnesota. He is shooting 43.5% from deep in B1G play. Although it’s usually a bad sign if Minnesota relies too heavily on him because they’re 1-5 in games in which Asuma scores more than 6 points.

    F- Femi Odukale, Sr. 6’6, 215: 6.2 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 3.4 apg, 42.3% FG, 21.4% 3pt, 46.7% FT

It has been a long and winding road for Odukale who transferred from Pittsburgh to Seton Hall to New Mexico State to Minnesota. He has never been a great shooter but is shooting a career worst from both 3-point range and the free throw line. He leads Minnesota in assist rate playing a bit of a point forward role but also leads the team in turnovers by a wide margin so it’s not a bad thing for UW for him to have the ball. He’s their best wing defender and is 3rd on the team in blocks and 1st in steals.

    C- Dawson Garcia, Sr. 6’11, 234: 19.8 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 1.1 bpg, 50.2% FG, 37.2% 3pt, 76.2% FT

Garcia is the star for Minnesota and a clear all-conference selection. He had a great freshman year at Marquette then fizzled at North Carolina before transferring home and playing 3 seasons for Minnesota averaging at least 15 points and 6.5 rebounds in each. He’s a true stretch 5 and can do it all. He’s one of just 4 players in the country averaging at least 19 points, 7 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 made 3 per game along with Rutgers’ Ace Bailey, Stanford’s Maxime Raynaud, and Duke’s Cooper Flagg. Garcia plays enough on the perimeter that he’s a terrible offensive rebounder for a 6’11 center but is a plus everywhere else.

    The Outlook

Our long national (okay, extremely regional) nightmare is over. Washington finally gets to play a team that isn’t at the top of the conference standings. After 7 straight games against teams that rank in the top-32 at KenPom, Washington finally gets to play the team that is ranked the next worst in the league at 94th.

That doesn’t mean this one is going to be easy. Minnesota has a record that is close to Washington’s overall but they also have won 3 of their last 4 games. That includes home wins over Michigan and Oregon plus a road victory over Iowa. True, Minnesota got spanked at Michigan State in their most recent game but so did the Huskies in that same spot.

There are a lot of similarities in the roster makeup of these two teams. Both are extremely reliant on their star post player who leads the team in both points and rebounds per game. Both have starting lead guards from Minnesota who have struggled mightily to make outside shots this season (Tyree Ihenacho and Lu’Cye Patterson). Both have been terrible from the free throw line so far with UW at 305th and Minnesota 352nd nationally.

If there’s a positive for Minnesota’s offense other than the play of Garcia, it’s that they are generally a good passing team. The Golden Gophers rank 10th in the country in assist rate so they very rarely rely on isolation basketball. That will be a good test for the Huskies, who despite some shortcomings on the defensive end are 12th in opponent assist rate. Minnesota also ranks well-above average in turnover rate so their extra passes don’t result in a bunch of giveaways.

Teams don’t get a lot of fastbreak opportunities against Minnesota in part because of their ability to protect the ball and in part because of their tempo. They rank nearly last in the country in pace of play so Minnesota will concede some offensive rebounds to get back in transition and will also keep making the extra pass to chew up shot clock. You can’t rely on getting bailed out by Minnesota taking a quick 3 the first time it’s semi-available. They’re content to wait for the best open shot.

In the recent past it would be tempting to say that Dawson Garcia will carve up the Huskies inside. We’ll see if the return of Franck Kepnang means that Garcia will end up spending a lot more time on the perimeter where he is comfortable shooting from outside. If that’s the case, expect the Huskies to switch and play Osobor on Garcia with Kepnang guarding either Odukale or backup bigs Parker Fox and Frank Mitchell, none of whom are threats outside the paint.

When the Huskies have the ball they will need to be careful at the rim. Minnesota is top-30 nationally in block rate and all 4 of the players I just mentioned in the previous paragraph have a block rate over 3.5%. Only Kepnang and reserve KC Ibekwe are over that mark for the Huskies.

It’s tempting to pick Washington in this spot. Minnesota is by far the worst team they’ve played since a blowout win over NJIT in late December. If the Huskies play as well as they did against Maryland, Illinois, or UCLA then it should be enough to come away with a win. All of those games were at home though. We’ve only seen 2 road games outside the Pacific time zone for UW and they were 33 and 16-point losses. To teams much better than Minnesota but a 9 am body clock tipoff time worries me even with a week off between games.

Minnesota has shown they haven’t forgotten how to win a close game. They’re 7th nationally in D-1 experience. Their top-7 players in usage rate are all seniors and only one underclassman is a part of the rotation. It’s a veteran team even if there are only a few returning contributors. Washington’s only prior game against Minnesota was a heart-breaking loss on a contested 3-pointer following a travel with 2.1 seconds left back in 2018. I’ll say it won’t be quite that painful but similarly close until UW proves it can get over the hump.

  • Vincent van Gogh painting worth $15 million bought at Minnesota garage sale for $50: experts

    Struck Gogh-ld.

A newly discovered Vincent van Gogh painting worth $15 million was likely found at a dusty Minnesota garage sale — where a buyer plunked down less than $50 for the world-famous artist’s work, according to a team of New York-based experts.

The previously unknown oil portrait depicts a fisherman smoking a pipe and was created in 1889 — the same year van Gogh painted his masterpiece “The Starry Night” at a psychiatric ward in southern France, ArtNews.com reported Wednesday.

    Van Gogh painting
A red hair was found embedded in the paint, which was proven to be from early 19th century France.
    LMI Group International, Inc.

The impressionist painting was snapped up at a Minnesota garage sale by an anonymous antiques collector for less than $50 several years ago and is now believed to be worth a whopping $15 million, according to a team of roughly 20 experts.

“[I was] struck by what I saw,” Maxwell Anderson, a former Metropolitan Museum of Art curator, told The Wall Street Journal.

He said smile lines framing the fisherman’s face were van Gogh-esque and that there was a single red hair — the hue of the late artist’s locks — embedded in the paint.

To determine if it was authentic, he teamed up with a group of conservators, scientists and historians, who now believe the work was made by the troubled genius, the paper reported.

The experts also matched red pigment in the painting to a brand of paint used in southern France in the late 19th century.

The piece depicts a fisherman with a white beard repairing his net next to an empty shoreline with the word “Elimar”— likely the subject’s name — scrawled in the lower right-hand corner, the outlet reported.

“This moving likeness embodies van Gogh’s recurring theme of redemption, a concept frequently discussed in his letters and art,” Anderson said in a statement. “Through Elimar, van Gogh creates a form of spiritual self-portrait, allowing viewers to see the painter as he wished to be remembered.”

The painting still needs to be given a thumbs up by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam before it’s officially recognized as authentic.

While authenticating the art, a team of roughly 20 experts — from fields including chemistry, art and patent law — joined forces for the New York-based art research firm LMI Group, which bought the painting from the anonymous antiques collector in 2019.

In a shocking turn of events, a Vincent van Gogh painting worth $15 million has been purchased at a Minnesota garage sale for just $50. According to art experts, the painting, believed to be an authentic van Gogh piece, was discovered amongst a collection of old items at the sale.

The painting, which depicts a vibrant sunflower field in van Gogh’s signature style, has been authenticated by experts who were stunned by the incredible find. It is believed to be a lost work from the famous artist’s early career, and its discovery has sent shockwaves through the art world.

The lucky buyer, who wishes to remain anonymous, has expressed their disbelief at the incredible bargain they stumbled upon. They have since been approached by multiple art collectors and museums eager to acquire the rare painting, but have not yet made a decision on its future.

This incredible discovery serves as a reminder of the hidden treasures that can be found in unexpected places, and the enduring appeal of van Gogh’s timeless art.

  • Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball team sinks against No. 4 USC

But once the Gophers found their footing, they traded punches with USC rather impressively. Hart had another strong game, scoring 18 points with eight rebounds. Mallory Heyer made five of seven three-pointers — she was the only Gophers player to hit a three — and scored 17. Battle scored 14 points with seven rebounds, a block and a steal.

The Gophers were down 15 after three quarters. Heyer hit a three and two free throws and Hart scored to pull the Gophers within 64-58 with 8:10 left. But seconds later Avery Howell hit a three to stop the rally.

Struggling to defend the perimeter on one end and finding good shots hard to find, the Gophers fell behind 20-5 before the game was six minutes old, when Clarice Akunwafo scored with 4:03 left in the quarter.

The Trojans hit five of 11 three-pointers in the quarter, led by Iriafen, who hit two and had nine points in the first quarter.

Hart and Grace Grocholski each had four points in a 10-2 run that pulled the Gophers within seven late in the quarter before a three by Talia von Oelhoffen made it a 10-point game entering the second quarter.

Calmed down, the Gophers hung with the Trojans for much of the second quarter. Minnesota continued to keep a lid on Watkins’ scoring — she was 0-for-10 in the first half — but had a hard time slowing Iriafen, who had 14 points and eight rebounds by halftime, when USC led 40-28, a lead it extended to 15 after three quarters.

In a tough matchup against the No. 4 ranked USC Trojans, the Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball team came up short, suffering a disappointing loss. Despite putting up a valiant effort, the Gophers were unable to overcome the strong defense and offensive firepower of USC.

The Gophers fought hard throughout the game, but ultimately fell short as USC’s talented roster proved to be too much to handle. Despite the loss, the Gophers showed resilience and determination, and will look to bounce back in their next game.

It was a tough defeat for the Gophers, but they will use this experience to learn and grow as a team. With their competitive spirit and dedication, the Gophers are sure to come back stronger in their future matchups. Stay tuned for more updates on the Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball team as they continue their season.

  • JuJu Watkins struggles but USC women’s basketball beats Minnesota

In the waning moments of her worst half at USC, JuJu Watkins put her head down and drove to her left with all she had, leaning into contact, then leaping back and letting a daring jumper fly. Nine times she’d missed — from the lane, from midrange, from the corner — without a single bucket.

This was the same Trojans star who’d scored fewer than 20 points just twice this season. But as silky smooth as the sequence looked — and as strange as a slump from Watkins seemed — the step-back clanked away. The buzzer rang on an uncharacteristic 0-for-10 half for one of college basketball’s brightest stars.

Watkins looked up to the scoreboard, frustrated, as if to demand an answer.

Fortunately for USC, it found the answers it needed Thursday, even with Watkins at her worst. A star turn from Trojans forward Kiki Iriafen, along with timely contributions from its fleet of freshmen, was plenty to put away Minnesota 82-69, giving USC a 15th straight victory.

But this win — its first at home in 18 days — didn’t come as smoothly as the others. And for Watkins especially, every step seemed like a struggle.

Her touch was off. Her drives to the hoop were thwarted. Open shots refused to fall. Watkins fought through the slump in the second half, hitting six of 12 from the field. But her 29% shooting ranked among her least efficient in two seasons at USC (19-1, 9-0 Big Ten). She still managed to score 20, actually exceeding her point total from USC’s previous win over Purdue.

With Watkins struggling, Iriafen stepped into a starring role. After bumping a knee and missing the second half against Purdue last weekend, Iriafen shined from the start.

The forward had been reluctant to let it fly from three-point range, having made only two threes in her previous 19 games. But coach Lindsay Gottlieb insisted this week that she trust her stroke and test out the perimeter. So Iriafen fired deep early on, sinking one three-pointer, then another on the next possession, adding a whole new dimension to an already devastating offense. She finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

The three-pointers were flying, with the Trojans hitting 11 of 27. USC led from start to finish as a result, with Avery Howell adding 12 points and Kennedy Smith nine.

Still, Minnesota (18-4, 6-4) hung around until midway through the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to six points with less than eight minutes remaining. But then Howell sunk a three, and on the next possession, Watkins drove toward the hoop.

As she lifted off, Watkins was fouled. This time she made the shot, and the Trojans walked away with another win, even on a night when their superstar struggled.

In a hard-fought battle, USC women’s basketball emerged victorious against Minnesota despite star player JuJu Watkins facing struggles on the court. Watkins, known for her exceptional scoring ability, faced tough defensive pressure from the Minnesota team but still managed to contribute to the team’s success with key plays and assists.

The game was a true test of resilience for the USC team, as they had to rely on their depth and teamwork to secure the win. Watkins may not have had her usual standout performance, but her teammates stepped up to fill the void and secure the victory.

This win is a testament to the strength and determination of the USC women’s basketball team, showing that they can overcome challenges and adversity to come out on top. With Watkins leading the way and her teammates rallying behind her, the Trojans are poised for a successful season ahead.

  • Why are we so excited for the second annual Minnesota Yacht Club music fest?

“Too Sweet” hitmaker Hozier, slated for opening night, remains as hot as out-of-the-fryer mini-donuts, and the demand to see him hasn’t diminished. Green Day, the festival closer, is one of the all-time great live bands, and its hyperkinetic frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is invariably extra-amped (if that’s even possible for him) when he takes the stage in the Twin Cities, hometown for his wife, Adrienne, whom he met here. Even though Billie and the boys rocked Minneapolis stadiums last year and in 2021, we’re always glad to see Green Day.

Fall Out Boy, not so much. Especially since these Day 2 headliners will have played the metro area in four of the past five years, including the last three consecutively.

The MYC 2025 undercards suggest that not all these artists are “warm-up” acts. Opening day on July 18 is particularly compelling with soulful rockers Alabama Shakes, quirky but cult-loved Father John Misty and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Sheryl Crow, an inspiring and underappreciated concertizer — all she wants to do is have some fun.

The middle day — easily the least engrossing lineup — boasts a couple of winners on its undercard in Gen X alt-rockers Weezer, who are as comfortable as an old sweater, and Minnesota’s own Cory Wong, who always puts on a spirited, entertaining show of instrumental jazz-funk.

The final day, the Green Day day, features a delectable mix of top-notch melodic rock bands Semisonic and Beach Bunny, along with party bands 311 and Sublime as well as Garbage, the magnificent modern rockers from Madison, Wis., whose singer Shirley Manson always remembers that they played their first concert ever in Minneapolis at the 7th Street Entry in 1995.

Overall, we’re pretty thrilled about this lineup. OK, there are a few slots where we’re we might go sit by the banks of the Mississippi River for a break and an overpriced beer. But it looks like the Twin Cities have finally landed a bona fide destination summer music festival just like Austin City Limits in Texas and Outside Lands in San Francisco. We’re not massive like Coachella or Lollapalooza. That’s fine. We don’t have the space for it.

Are you ready to set sail on a musical adventure like no other? The second annual Minnesota Yacht Club music fest is just around the corner and we couldn’t be more excited!

Last year’s inaugural event was a huge success, with top-notch performances from both local and national artists, breathtaking views of the lake, and an atmosphere that can only be described as electric. This year promises to be even bigger and better, with an incredible lineup of musicians, food vendors, and activities for all ages.

Whether you’re a music lover, a foodie, or just looking for a fun day out on the water, the Minnesota Yacht Club music fest has something for everyone. So grab your tickets, pack your sunscreen, and get ready to dance the day away with us on the lake. We can’t wait to see you there! #MYCmusicfest #sailintosummer

  • Minnesota Timberwolves at Utah Jazz odds, picks and predictions

The Minnesota Timberwolves (26-21) and Utah Jazz (10-35) meet Thursday. Tip-off from Delta Center is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NBA odds around the Timberwolves vs. Jazz odds and make our expert NBA picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: First meeting; Minnesota swept 4-0 last season

The Timberwolves are on the second half of a back-to-back, coming off a 121-113 win at the Phoenix Suns Wednesday. Minnesota covered as a 1-point underdog, and the Over (224.5) hit. G Anthony Edwards had 33 points for the Timberwolves, who have won 4 straight.

The Jazz lost 114-103 at the Golden State Warriors Tuesday, failing to cover as 10.5-point underdogs with the Under (221.5) cashing. G Collin Sexton had 30 points, tied for his season high, going 12-for-19 on field-goal attempts. Utah has lost 7 straight games and is on a 3-game against-the-spread (ATS) skid.

Minnesota went 3-1 ATS in 4 head-to-head meetings last season, with the Over/Under (O/U) going 0-4.

In their last meeting (March 18), the Timberwolves covered as 4-point favorites in a 114-104 win at Utah as the Under (224.5) hit. Edwards had 32 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds for Minnesota, while Sexton led the Jazz with a team-high 24 points off the bench.

Timberwolves at Jazz picks and predictions

    Prediction

    Timberwolves 115, Jazz 114

    Moneyline

It’s hard to fade the Timberwolves (-285) since their last 3 games have resulted in wins by 8 or more points. However, -285 is too expensive for a team that is slightly above .500 and on the second half of a back-to-back.

PASS. Bet the spread and/or total instead.

    Against the spread

Utah has lost 7 consecutive games straight up, but it is 13-6 ATS in its last 19 as an underdog. While the Jazz failed to cover the closing line by a half-point at Golden State Tuesday, they did cash as 14.5-point underdogs for those who bet them earlier in the day before Warriors G Stephen Curry (knees) was added to the injury report.

The Timberwolves have won 4 in a row, but they’re on a 5-game ATS skid as favorites. They shouldn’t be trusted to cover as road favorites on the second night of a back-to-back.

    BET JAZZ +7.5 (-118).

    Over/Under

For the Over to hit, Utah will likely need to score 109 or more points. It has scored 110 or more in 6 of its last 8 games, while Minnesota has allowed 113 or more in its last 2 on the road.

    BET OVER 224.5 (-110).
