Canadian Black Hawk helicopters patrolling Minnesota border along with conservation officers
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have launched new Black Hawk helicopters, along with Manitoba Conservation Officers are now patrolling the border with the United States, including with northern Minnesota.
“Everybody in Manitoba right now is paying attention to building up the relationship with the United States of America,” said Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew. “Having a strong and secure border is important to us.”
Manitoba officials announced on Monday that conservation officers will now be used to look for drug and human trafficking.
A little more than a week ago, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police launched Black Hawk helicopters to work the border — including the Minnesota border with Manitoba. “I’m sure you’ll probably hear it, might see it — it will be flying on the Canadian side,” said RCMP Assistant Commissioner Lisa Moreland. The new helicopters allow the RCMP to deploy teams of officers quickly if they detect people crossing the border in regions where conditions and the elements can be harsh.

Last week, President Donald Trump mentioned possibly imposing 25% tariffs soon on Mexico and Canada — as the United States tries to stop illegal immigration and the flow of fentanyl.
U.S. Customs agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border last fiscal year, compared with more than 21,000 pounds (21,100) at the Mexico border.
U.S. Border Patrol FY2024 data shows more than 1.5 million people encountered or apprehended on the southern border with Mexico, compared to more than 23,000 people apprehended on the Canadian border.
“I think it’s unfortunate that the President of the United States has to tell us that we need to secure our border better,” said Dave Carlson, a top government official in the municipality of Emerson-Franklin in Manitoba. “I think a lot of people have felt that it’s not secure enough.”
“The additional eyes and ears on the border is really a good thing because we have seen those tragedies when people cross in inclement weather and get themselves into a bad situation,” Carlson said.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
In a recent development, Canadian Black Hawk helicopters have been spotted patrolling the Minnesota border alongside conservation officers. This increased presence is aimed at curbing illegal activities such as poaching and unauthorized border crossings. The collaboration between Canadian military helicopters and conservation officers signals a united effort to protect the natural resources and wildlife in the region. This joint operation is crucial in safeguarding the delicate ecosystem and maintaining the integrity of the border.
Residents and visitors in the area are urged to cooperate with authorities and report any suspicious activities to ensure the safety and preservation of the environment. The heightened surveillance is a proactive measure to deter illegal activities and uphold the laws and regulations in place.
As we continue to see the importance of conservation efforts and border security, it is reassuring to witness the cooperation between different agencies working together towards a common goal. Let’s all do our part in protecting our natural resources and promoting sustainable practices for future generations to enjoy.

1. Another good win for MSU, but the Spartans need Akins to get his swagger back
EAST LANSING – In the short term, there was a lot for Michigan State to like about how it played in Tuesday night’s 73-51 win over Minnesota — how it defended and rebounded in the first half especially. MSU suffocated the life out of the Gophers’ three-game winning streak and, other than a brief stretch in the second half, there was never really any hope for them.
That’s 13 straight wins for MSU, the most since 2018-19, and a 9-0 Big Ten mark, the best league start since that same season. The Spartans held Minnesota to 16 first half points — seven field goals, 11 turnovers — and didn’t let Gophers star Dawson Garcia score his first bucket until there was 4:15 left until the break and MSU was ahead 21-8. Tre Holloman then hit three of his four first-half 3s in the final 2:20 and it was pretty much over. Late in the second half, with the game well in hand, Gehrig Normand was diving out of bounds after loose balls.
All good stuff.
There’s an argument to be made however, that the three biggest moments of the game came when Jaden Akins hit a 3-pointer — that he needed see go in — early in the second half to make it 41-23, then a reverse layup in traffic eight minutes later, followed quickly by another 3. Those last two came as Minnesota was trying to make things interesting. That’s not why those were big shots, though.
Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.
Akins has been struggling with his shot — in this game and the two before it — and you can see it seeping into his confidence. And how he’s been playing impacted his minutes in this one, with Jeremy Fears Jr., Tre Holloman and Jase Richardson all playing at least five more minutes than the 19 Akins did on Tuesday.
On its face, no big deal. Those other three are really good players. And one of the things Tom Izzo and his staff have done well is truly let the players decide playing time based on how they’re playing. I didn’t necessarily believe it when Izzo first said it before the season, but it’s played out that way.
Yet for as easy as it is to get enamored with the growing games of Fears and Richardson, Coen Carr and others on this roster, this MSU team isn’t going to win squat in the long run without Akins playing with confidence. MSU doesn’t want this to become a Chris Hill 2005 situation (I understand that team did make a Final Four). Akins is too important. He’s not playing very well. You can see the frustration. The Spartans need him to work through it and help him do so. They need him. Akins doesn’t need to be a headliner or 20-point scorer for this team, but he and MSU need him to have his swagger back.
2. If Kohler starts hitting 3s …
Among several reasons to think this MSU team hasn’t become all it can be yet is Jaxon Kohler’s 3-point shot. If and when he starts knocking them down with any regularity, it’ll add a lot — and make this team tough to defend.
Think about what Kenny Goins’ late-career outside shot did for the Spartans in 2018-19. He had made four total before that season and made 56 as a senior and, of course, one unforgettable one. Or for those who really know, think of A.J. Granger, who hit five 3s in his first two seasons at MSU and 72 in his last two. I think Kohler has that potential, because his shot looks good when it leaves his hands. He’s just got to trust it and get his legs into it.
We saw it Tuesday night, when he hit 2 of 4 from beyond the arc in the first half, one from the top of the key, then from the left wing. These were good, open shots. The defense had made its choice — the Gophers didn’t mind Kohler shooting. In the second half, Minnesota made the same choice and Kohler passed up one. He’s going to have to hit a few more before teams consider him a threat.
I think it’s coming. He does, too.
“I have a consistent 3-point shooting plan every day that I work on,” Kohler said during a recent conversation in the locker room after the Illinois game. “I just know one day in one game, they’re going to go in and I won’t look back, because I’ve been working on it a lot. … I just have to shoot with confidence when it’s against other people, you know, in games.”
3. Zapala shows the value of a big man who can exploit a mismatch
One of the elements MSU lacked the last couple years at the center position was the ability to take advantage of a size mismatch on the offensive end, let alone counter teams that had size themselves.
Minnesota’s recent success has come in part because the Gophers have gone small/thinner, featuring 6-11 Dawson Garcia at the 5, next to 6-8 forward Parker Fox. That would have worked perfectly against the Spartans last season. Tuesday night, because of Szymon Zapala’s good hands, size and strength and skill and positioning around the rim, the matchup was a problem for the Gophers immediately.
Zapala pulled down two offensive rebounds on the first possession, then posted up and scored on the next. A couple possessions later, MSU went to him again and he was fouled inside, which led to an MSU score. The Gophers, which began with Garcia on him, seemed to move away from that matchup then, perhaps to avoid their star getting in foul trouble.
Zapala’s start didn’t lead to a ton. Just a 4-0 start that set the tone inside and on the glass.
There are number of areas where this team is better than a year ago. None more important, I’d argue, than the center spot. Some of that is improvement by Carson Cooper — who had 11 rebounds Tuesday — and Jaxon Kohler, who’s played a fair bit of center, too. But it begins with Zapala. We saw his value right out of the gate Tuesday.

- Dominant Defense: The Michigan State basketball team put on a defensive clinic against Minnesota, holding the Golden Gophers to just 51 points. The Spartans suffocated Minnesota’s offense, forcing turnovers and contesting every shot. This strong defensive showing will be crucial as MSU looks to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.
- Balanced Scoring Attack: MSU showcased their offensive depth in this game, with multiple players contributing on the scoring front. Aaron Henry led the way with 21 points, but other players like Gabe Brown and Joey Hauser also chipped in with double-digit scoring performances. This balanced attack will make the Spartans a tough team to defend moving forward.
- Big Ten Contenders: With this convincing win over Minnesota, Michigan State has once again proven that they are a force to be reckoned with in the Big Ten conference. The Spartans are currently sitting near the top of the standings and will be looking to continue their strong play as they head into the final stretch of the regular season. Expect MSU to be a serious contender in the conference tournament and beyond.

Michigan State Dominates Minnesota in 73-51 VictoryIn a commanding performance, the Michigan State Spartans defeated the Minnesota Golden Gophers with a final score of 73-51 on January 28, 2025.
From the opening tip-off, Michigan State asserted their dominance on both ends of the court. The Spartans’ defense stifled Minnesota’s offense, holding the Golden Gophers to just 51 points for the entire game. Michigan State’s suffocating defense forced turnovers and contested shots, while also limiting Minnesota’s second-chance opportunities with strong rebounding.
Offensively, the Spartans were firing on all cylinders. Their ball movement was crisp and efficient, leading to open looks and high-percentage shots. Michigan State’s balanced scoring attack saw multiple players contribute to the team’s point total, with several players reaching double figures.
One standout performer for Michigan State was junior guard, who led the team in scoring with 20 points. His ability to create off the dribble and knock down shots from beyond the arc proved to be too much for Minnesota to handle. Additionally, the Spartans received solid contributions from their frontcourt players, who controlled the paint and dominated the glass on both ends of the court.
On the other hand, Minnesota struggled to find any rhythm offensively against Michigan State’s smothering defense. The Golden Gophers were unable to establish a consistent scoring threat and were forced into difficult shots throughout the game. Despite their efforts to claw back into the contest, Minnesota ultimately fell short against the superior Spartans.
With this victory, Michigan State improves their record to 18-4 on the season and continues to assert themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the conference. As for Minnesota, they will look to regroup and bounce back from this tough loss as they aim to get back on track in their next game.
Overall, Michigan State’s dominant performance against Minnesota showcased their strength and depth as a team, and they will look to carry this momentum forward as they continue their pursuit of a conference championship.

EAST LANSING – In a flash, Tre Holloman took over the game. In every facet. Against his hometown team.
The junior guard’s seismic stretch of three consecutive 3-pointers near the end of the first half made Breslin Center shake with excitement as No. 7 Michigan State basketball overwhelmed Minnesota for the second time this season.
Holloman led another balanced effort with 12 first-half points, all on 3-pointers, as the Spartans won their 13th straight game, 73-51, on Tuesday night. They are off to its best start and on its longest winning streak since the 2018-19 season, when they also won their first nine Big Ten games and had a 13-game streak to open 18-2.
The Spartans (18-2, 9-0 Big Ten) head to Los Angeles later this week for a two-game road trip, starting 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon at USC (12-8, 4-5) and 8 p.m. next Tuesday at UCLA (15-6, 6-4). Both games will not be on broadcast or cable TV but streamed on NBC’s Peacock app.

Dawson Garcia scored 21 points for Minnesota (11-10, 3-7), which had won three straight after opening league play with six straight losses.
Defense to start
MSU and Minnesota opened the game in a defensive tussle, trading blocked shots and turnovers during a sloppy start.
The floodgates, albeit through some volume shooting early, finally opened from outside for the Spartans. MSU entered ranked 341st out of 355 Division I teams at 28.7% 3-point shooting, 342nd at 5.5 made 3s per game and 325th at 19.1 triple tries a contest.
Holloman made the Spartans first 3-pointer Tuesday on their fifth attempt, a pull-up from deep over the Gophers’ guards, just before the first media timeout. It was part of a 16-6 opening salvo by the Spartans, which was capped by Jaxon Kohler’s first of two first-half 3-pointers.
Through the first 16:34, Minnesota committed nine turnovers to MSU’s five, while each team had four blocks and four steals. That was when Holloman took center stage.
After Carson Cooper missed a pair of technical foul free throws and MSU retained possession, Holloman buried a triple from the right corner with 2:17 to go before half. Jase Richardson picked up a steal at the other end and fed it ahead to Holloman, who pulled up for a second 3-pointer. Then after a Richardson rebound, he again found Holloman. He buried the heat-check third time, and Breslin erupted.
Then it was Holloman’s turn to pick up a steal and hit Richardson, who got fouled. He hit both free throws to cap a 13-0 takeover run and give MSU as big as a 22-point lead. And for good measure, just before halftime, Holloman dished to Szymon Zapala for an alley oop dunk.
The Spartans have not lost since Holloman joined the starting lineup for their overtime win against North Carolina at the Maui Classic.
Izzo movin’ on up
With the win, MSU coach Tom Izzo now has 352 victories in Big Ten regular-season play. A victory over the Trojans on Saturday would move Izzo into a tie with former Indiana coach Bob Knight’s record 353, and he could break that mark by winning both games out West.
It is the first time in Izzo’s 30 seasons the Spartans went undefeated in December and January. And their balanced production continued.
And the balanced production continued.
Jadin Akins and Xavier Booker each added 10 points, while Cooper had nine points and 11 rebounds as MSU finished with a 40-22 rebounding edge that set up a 13-4 second-chance points edge and a 30-20 points in the paint advantage.
More:Michigan State basketball March Madness projections, bracketology
Coen Carr had seven points, including a late alley-oop dunk through a foul for a three-point play. Kohler added eight points and seven rebounds.
Richardson had eight assists, Jeremy Fears Jr. had six and Holloman had three as MSU had helpers on 20 of 25 baskets in the game.
The Spartans went 8-for-25 from 3-point range while also holding a 17-3 edge in fastbreak points.

Minnesota Wild Star to Undergo Surgery, Recovery Timeline Revealed
The injury news regarding Minnesota Wild superstar Kirill Kaprizov continues to worsen as the 2024-2025 season goes on. The team’s top offensive player has been out of the lineup for the majority of the past month with a lower-body injury, but temporarily returned recently for three games.
The return was short lived for the Wild superstar however, and the team announced that Kaprizov will undergo surgery for the issue and has a recovery timeline of roughly four weeks. The news comes rapidly after reports surfaced that he was considering that option in advance of the 4 Nations Face-Off, seemingly as a perfect gap in the season schedule to rest and recover for the postseason.
The team’s General Manager Bill Guerin spoke to the media recently about the team’s decision to take care of things now for Kaprizov. The big takeaway was that they felt the best move was to get their superstar back to full health, rather than let it linger into the offseason.
“So I think the best thing to do is to shut them down right now for a little while,” he said. “Fix the problem, and then get them back at 100 percent.”
The good news for the Wild and their top player is the injury and subsequent surgery will not end his season. Guerin stated that he’d miss a minimum of four weeks due to this procedure, but that still gives him the final month and a half of the regular season to get back into playing shape.
In the games Kaprizov appeared in this season, he’s been not only the most dangerous player on the ice for the Wild, he’s been an MVP candidate. In 37 games played, he has 23 goals, 29 assists, and 52 points and has been one of the most dominant even-strength players in the NHL. The Wild will hope to get him back as soon as possible after his imminent surgery.
Minnesota Wild Star Zach Parise to Undergo Surgery, Recovery Timeline RevealedMinnesota Wild fans were hit with some tough news today as it was announced that star forward Zach Parise will undergo surgery to address a lingering injury. The team has not disclosed the specific nature of the injury, but Parise has been dealing with nagging issues throughout the season.
The surgery is expected to sideline Parise for the next 4-6 weeks, meaning he will likely miss the remainder of the regular season. However, the team is hopeful that he will be able to return in time for the playoffs.
Parise, who has been a key contributor for the Wild this season, will be sorely missed during his absence. The team will need to rely on its depth and other top players to step up in his absence.
We wish Zach Parise a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the ice in time for the playoffs. The Wild will need him at his best if they hope to make a deep postseason run.

#Minnesota #Wild #Star #Undergo #Surgery #Recovery #Timeline #RevealedBob Dylan returning to Mankato in April for his first Minnesota concert in six years
Bob Dylan — the real one, not the actor playing him on screens — is finally bringing his Neverending Tour back home to Minnesota in 2025.
The Iron Range native will play his first home state gig in six years at the site of his last show here, Mankato’s Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center, on April 4. Tickets for the Friday night concert at the downtown hockey arena go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m. via Ticketmaster.com at prices not yet revealed. Seats to most of his shows of late have gone for about $75-$200.
Dylan, 83, has kept up momentum on the road in recent years, including a well-received appearance last summer at Somerset Amphitheater in western Wisconsin with Willie Nelson. But he hasn’t been back to Minnesota on tour since before the pandemic.
“He was focused, impassioned and arguably singing at his best in decades,” Star Tribune music critic Jon Bream wrote of that 2019 concert in Mankato — a reaction shared by many Dylanophiles after that show and at most of his other tour dates around the country since then.
While Bob himself seems to be enjoying some kind of musical upswing on stage in the 2020s, demand for his concert tickets certainly will be higher in 2025 following the widespread response to the new Oscar-nominated biopic on his early ‘60s incubatory period, “A Complete Unknown.” The first date he announced for 2025 — a March 25 date in Tulsa, Okla., in conjunction with the new museum there, the Bob Dylan Center — sold out fast when it went on sale last week.
Instead of playing bigger venues in bigger cities in response to this certain revival, though, Dylan is being Dylan. He’s choosing instead to play smaller sites and cities, also including Witchita, Kan., on March 29 and Green Bay, Wis., on April 6. There’s a chance more Midwest dates could be added later; but don’t count on it.
Some of the Twin Cities musicians who performed on Dylan’s only Minnesota-made album, “Blood on the Tracks,” took the stage this past weekend at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa with an all-star cast for a 50th anniversary celebration of the record. Clips are circulating all over social media (see one below) showing Kevin Odegard, Gregg Inhofer and Billy Peterson along with Paul Metsa performing with the likes of Elvis Costello and the War on Drugs’ Adam Granduciel.
Legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan is set to return to Mankato this April for his first concert in Minnesota in six years. The iconic musician will be performing at the Mankato Civic Center on April 15th, treating fans to a night of his timeless classics and new material.Dylan, who was born in Duluth, Minnesota, has a special connection to the state and his return to Mankato is sure to be a memorable event for both longtime fans and new listeners alike. Known for his poetic lyrics and distinctive voice, Dylan has been a major influence on generations of musicians and continues to be a vital force in the music industry.
Tickets for the concert are sure to sell out quickly, so be sure to grab yours as soon as they go on sale. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see a living legend perform in your own backyard. Bob Dylan’s concert in Mankato is sure to be a night to remember.

Netflix This season will also mark five years since Love Is Blind first premiered. The franchise has resulted in many success stories including season 1 couple Lauren Speed-Hamilton and Cameron Hamilton as well as season 4 lovebirds Bliss Poureetezadi and Zack Goytowski.
“Happy 6th Anniversary to the love of my life!!!” Cameron wrote via Instagram in November 2024. “It is a gift to journey through life with you and see you grow each day. … You inspire me to be a better man and I’m so grateful for the life we’ve built together.”
Love Is Blind (produced by Kinetic Content) season 8 premieres Friday, February 14, on Netflix. Keep reading to learn more about some of the cast:
