  • B1G Implications On the Line in Minnesota Series

    THE ORIGINAL SIX

The top notes you need to know about Spartan hockey

    •  No. 2/2 Michigan State continues its three-game homestand hosting No. 4/3 Minnesota (19-5-2), as the Gophers trail MSU by a single point in the Big Ten standings.   The Spartans are 9-1 at home this season with eight straight victories after an opening night loss to No. 2 Boston College. MSU has played 10 of its last 12 games away from Munn Ice Arena and went 8-2-2 in those games.  At 19-3-2, MSU is off to its best start since 2000-01, a team which started 22-1-4.

    •  Minnesota and MSU enter the games as the top two offenses as well as the top two defenses in the Big Ten.  The Gophers lead the nation with a 4.08 goals per game average, while MSU averages 3.42 goals per game.  MSU’s team defense (1.96 goals per game) edges the 2.15 goals allowed per game by the Gopher defense.   MSU’s total of 82 goals scored this season ranks in a tie for third (with BU) nationally behind Minnesota (106) and Denver (85).

    • The line of Charlie Stramel centering Isaac Howard and Daniel Russell have skated together in 13 of MSU’s 24 games, and have  50 points in those contests.  Stramel earned Big Ten Second Star of the Week honors after scoring a pair of goals (one shorthanded, one game-winner) and one assist on Saturday vs Michigan at home.  His 8-13-21 scoring line in 24 games surpasses his 8-12-20 he had in his two seasons combined at Wisconsin.   Howard had three assists on Saturday tying his career best.  He leads the nation in goals (18), goals per game (0.75), points (36), and points per game (1.5), and ranks fourth in the Big Ten in assists per game (0.75).  Russell ranks second on the team and 10th in the Big Ten in goals (10) and third in points behind his linemates (18).   Russell leads the country in game-winning goals, (6), while Stramel has four.

Karsen Dorwart and Joey Larson have skated together for the last 11 games, and were joined by Gavin O’Connell on their wing against Michigan and combined for 2-4-6.   Over the last 11 games, Dorwart has averaged a point per game (5-6-11), behind only Howard and Stramel and has a 7-11-18 scoring line.  Larson is third on the team in goals (8) and he improved his scoring line to 8-7-15 with a goal and two assists in the Michigan series.

    • Alternate captain Matt Basgall had MSU’s opening  goal in the win over Michigan on Saturday, tying his freshman total of four goals.  His 4-12-16 scoring line is tops among blueliners and fifth on the team in points overall.   Basgall shares the team lead in power play goals (3, 9th B1G) with Joey Larson.  Basgall skated in his 100th career Spartan game on Saturday, along with classmates Tiernan Shoudy and Daniel Russell.

    •  Trey Augustine  stopped 63 of 67 shots against in the split with Michigan, allowing four goals (.940, 1.98 GAA).  Friday was his first overtime loss since Nov. 26, 2023 on the road at Minnesota.   The sophomore remains the Big Ten leader and ranks sixth nationally in wins (12), and save percentage (.932, T-9th NCAA) and is second in shutouts (2, T-9th NCAA).  He is third in GAA (1.97, 13th NCAA).   He is also second in the league in games played (17) and minutes played (1033:17).

The upcoming series between the Minnesota Golden Gophers and their Big Ten rivals is more than just a regular conference matchup. With big implications on the line, this series could have a major impact on the standings and playoff picture for both teams.

The Golden Gophers currently sit near the top of the Big Ten standings, while their opponents are looking to climb their way up and make a statement. With only a few games left in the regular season, every point matters and every win is crucial.

This series will not only test the skills and depth of both teams, but also their mental toughness and ability to perform under pressure. The outcomes of these games could determine seeding for the Big Ten tournament and even have implications for the NCAA tournament.

Fans can expect an intense and competitive series as both teams battle it out on the ice. The stakes are high, the tension is palpable, and the excitement is building. Don’t miss a minute of the action as these two teams face off in what promises to be a thrilling and pivotal series.

  • University of Minnesota and Essentia announce new health care alliance

The University of Minnesota and Duluth-based Essentia Health are proposing a new nonprofit for academic medicine. The organizations say they’ll spend $1 billion over five years to build an “all-Minnesota health system solution.”

The U said much more work is needed to bring the proposal to fruition. Friday’s announcement said the new integrated health framework would re-invest in campus medical facilities, rural healthcare and increase access to elevated levels of specialized care.

Essentia Health employs about 15,000 people, including more than 2,200 physicians and advanced practitioners.

The university currently operates under a collaborative agreement with Fairview Health Services. That agreement ends next year. In December, the U announced a restructuring plan.

Fairview says it learned within the last 24 hours about the university’s discussions with Essentia.

“Over the last year, we have worked in good faith towards the university’s desire to purchase the academic assets,” noted Fairview in a statement. “Today’s announcement by the University reflects a sudden change in their stated desire.”

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

  • University of Minnesota, Essentia Health announce healthcare partnership

The partners describe a “bold vision to write the next chapter of healthcare” for “all Minnesotans.”

MINNEAPOLIS — The University of Minnesota has found a new healthcare partner in Essentia Health.

In a news release, the two organizations described their new partnership as a “bold vision to write the next chapter of healthcare for, and to best serve the healthcare needs of, all Minnesotans.”

The announcement comes more than a year after the U of M’s current healthcare partner, Fairview Health Services, said it would not renew its healthcare partnership with the university when it expires at the end of 2026.

According to the news release, the University of Minnesota and Essentia Health are looking to create a new non-profit with four key goals:

    • Address the most urgent healthcare needs of the state in new ways — for today and the future,
    • Build on the strengths of the University of Minnesota and Essentia Health to lead and operate this new entity,
    • Serve the needs of current and future patients and help educate the next generation of health professionals,
    • Ensure the future of academic medicine in Minnesota and provide essential financial support to the University of Minnesota Medical School.

The partners said their shared goal is to confront significant healthcare challenges in Minnesota and the U.S. as a whole, including rising costs, declining reimbursement and limited access to care. The announcement notes the organizations hope to deliver healthcare “closer to home,” particularly in rural and Tribal communities where healthcare options have declined in recent years.

The proposal includes a $1 billion strategic investment over five years “to bring this vision to life.”

“Our state’s healthcare providers and leaders, as well as everyday Minnesotans, have said loud and clear that we need a healthcare transformation in Minnesota to increase access to care and keep patients close to home with high-quality care,” said University of Minnesota President Rebecca Cunningham in a statement. “We agree, it is time to forge a new path forward and deliver a solution for all Minnesotans. This bold new path would shift us away from business as usual and position us to join with Minnesotans in the years ahead to address our state’s challenges head-on and deliver real transformational solutions in healthcare.”

The announcement states that current doctor-patient relationships would not change while providing “increased access to cutting-edge diagnostics, advanced treatments, specialized care, and innovative clinical trials taking place every day.”

“This is the beginning of an exciting, ambitious — and critically needed — conversation about the future of care in our state,” said Essentia Health CEO Dr. David Herman in a statement. “Essentia Health has a long and committed partnership with the University of Minnesota. With nearly 70 percent of all Minnesota physicians having been trained at the University, we know that continuing to deliver excellent patient outcomes while building a sustainable healthcare future rests on the foundation of a strong medical school. These are key reasons why Essentia leadership has begun exploring opportunities to build a new framework for healthcare in Minnesota.”

University President Rebecca Cunningham said discussions are underway with current partner Fairview about the U’s new healthcare vision.

“We are at an inflection point in our relationship with Fairview Health Services that requires an urgent and innovative solution,” Cunningham said in a statement. “We envision this model as a new path forward in our relationship, one that builds on the momentum all those at M Health Fairview have built and that continues to put patients first, consistent with our organizations’ shared priorities. We have begun conversations and invite further discussion with Fairview to bring this concept to life for Minnesota.”

University of Minnesota and Essentia Health have officially announced a new partnership that aims to enhance healthcare services for patients in the region. This collaboration will combine the research and academic expertise of the University of Minnesota with the clinical excellence of Essentia Health to improve patient outcomes and advance medical knowledge.

The partnership will focus on a variety of initiatives, including expanding access to specialty care, optimizing care delivery, and advancing medical education and research. By working together, both organizations hope to create a more seamless healthcare experience for patients and improve the overall health of the communities they serve.

This partnership represents a significant step forward in healthcare innovation and collaboration in the region. Both the University of Minnesota and Essentia Health are committed to providing high-quality, patient-centered care, and this partnership will further strengthen their ability to achieve this goal.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting partnership and the impact it will have on healthcare in the region.

  • University of Minnesota and Essentia Health share bold new vision for healthcare in Minnesota

A vision for an integrated “all-Minnesota” solution

The University of Minnesota and Essentia Health are sharing the framework for a bold vision to write the next chapter of healthcare for, and to best serve the healthcare needs of, all Minnesotans.

This proposed framework aspires to bring together the collective strengths of both organizations, and potentially other University and Essentia Health partners. The University and Essentia Health are proposing formation of a new not-for-profit entity to:

    • Address the most urgent healthcare needs of the state in new ways — for today and for the future,
    • Build on the strengths of the University of Minnesota and Essentia Health to lead and operate this new entity,
    • Serve the needs of current and future patients and help educate the next generation of health professionals,
    • Ensure the future of academic medicine in Minnesota and essential financial support to the University of Minnesota Medical School.

Today’s announcement is just the start of transparent and comprehensive discussions these organizations still must have. Much more work will be needed to bring this vision to fruition. But it charts a course that fits the nonprofit mission of Essentia and the land-grant mission of the University to best serve all Minnesotans. The University and Essentia have shared their vision and the potential for an “all-Minnesota” health solution with Fairview Health Services.

“Our state’s healthcare providers and leaders, as well as everyday Minnesotans, have said loud and clear that we need a healthcare transformation in Minnesota to increase access to care and keep patients close to home with high quality care,” said University of Minnesota President Rebecca Cunningham. “We agree, it is time to forge a new path forward and deliver a solution for all Minnesotans. This bold new path would shift us away from business as usual and position us to join with Minnesotans in the years ahead to address our state’s challenges head-on and deliver real transformational solutions in healthcare.”

Essentia Health CEO and ophthalmologist Dr. David Herman called this proposal “the beginning of an exciting, ambitious, and critically needed conversation” about the future of healthcare in our state.

“This is the beginning of an exciting, ambitious — and critically needed — conversation about the future of care in our state,” said Essentia Health CEO Dr. David Herman.

The shared goal of the University of Minnesota and Essentia Health is to overcome Minnesota’s most pressing healthcare challenges. The healthcare challenges facing our state and nation are multiple: increasing costs; flat or declining reimbursement; limited access; critical workforce shortages; and structural inequities that amplify health disparities. The proposed framework for a solution doesn’t just form new partnerships, but re-envisions the future to offer wide-ranging benefits for patients throughout Minnesota.

If realized, this new model would help Minnesotans enjoy more comprehensive care, delivered closer to home, where patients need it the most, especially in rural and Tribal communities with fewer local healthcare options. The framework for this solution would preserve existing doctor-patient relationships for patients across our systems while delivering the unrivaled benefits of one of the nation’s leading research universities — increased access to cutting-edge diagnostics, advanced treatments, specialized care, and innovative clinical trials taking place every day.

For healthcare professionals, this approach would create new opportunities to build fulfilling clinical careers caring for Minnesotans and those who travel here from outside the state for exceptional healthcare. Long term, this proposed solution would also decrease clinical costs, allow more sustainable and innovative models (e.g., home health, telehealth, pharmacy services), and scale expensive healthcare technology for use across a large system.

An opportunity for further investment on behalf of patients

This broad framework not only signals the potential for a significant commitment to the health of all Minnesotans, but a significant strategic investment to help bring the vision to life in a way that is sustainable and successful for decades to come. The proposed new all-Minnesota health system solution would invest $1 billion over five years to bring this vision to life.

This would be possible by leveraging the assets of the combined proposed system to unlock financing, and the vision for our shared future to inspire philanthropic support for this not-for-profit all-Minnesota solution.

The newly formed, integrated health framework would re-invest in University of Minnesota on- and near-campus medical facilities, as well as in rural healthcare and increased access to elevated levels of specialized care.

The University currently operates under a collaborative agreement with Fairview Health Services, which ends in 2026.

“We are at an inflection point in our relationship with Fairview Health Services that requires an urgent and innovative solution,” said Cunningham. “We envision this model as a new path forward in our relationship, one that builds on the momentum all those at M Health Fairview have built and that continues to put patients first, consistent with our organizations’ shared priorities. We have begun conversations and invite further discussion with Fairview to bring this concept to life for Minnesota.

“We believe that a healthier and more vibrant Minnesota is not only possible — it’s our duty,” added Cunningham. “This bold vision creates a new day for healthcare in Minnesota, meeting the critical needs of today and anticipating the demands of the future.”

The University of Minnesota and Essentia Health have joined forces to unveil a groundbreaking new vision for healthcare in Minnesota. This innovative partnership aims to revolutionize the way healthcare is delivered in the state, with a focus on improving patient outcomes, reducing costs, and enhancing access to care.

By combining the research expertise of the University of Minnesota with the clinical excellence of Essentia Health, this collaboration is set to drive advancements in healthcare that will benefit patients across the region. Together, they aim to develop new treatment approaches, technologies, and models of care that will transform the healthcare landscape in Minnesota.

This bold new vision represents a major step forward in the effort to provide high-quality, affordable healthcare to all residents of the state. By working together, the University of Minnesota and Essentia Health are poised to make a significant impact on the health and well-being of communities throughout Minnesota. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting partnership and the positive changes it will bring to the healthcare industry.

  • How Minnesota Twins’ Catching Depth Points to a Three-Catcher Rotation in 2025 – Twins

As they prepare for the upcoming season, the Minnesota Twins face an intriguing challenge. With Ryan Jeffers and Christian Vázquez splitting catching duties in 2023 and 2024, the team had one of the more stable backstop duos in the league. However, the offseason has brought rumors that the Twins could look to trade one of their veteran catchers, creating a void behind the plate. If such a trade comes to fruition, the Twins may need to get creative, potentially adopting a three-catcher rotation to maximize their depth while covering defensive deficiencies.

    The Current Landscape
If Jeffers or Vázquez were dealt, the Twins would be left with intriguing but unpolished catching options. Diego Cartaya is a former top prospect from the Dodgers who offers offensive upside but still needs refinement on both sides of the game. Last season, he hit .221/.323/.363 (.686) with 16 doubles and 11 home runs in 95 games between Double- and Triple-A. He started 69 games as a catcher, with his other appearances coming as DH. In a three-catcher rotation, he would become the backup catcher.

Jair Camargo showed flashes of potential in 2024, but may not yet be ready for a full-time role. In 2024, he played 74 games at Triple-A and slashed .212/.290/.403 (.693) with 16 doubles and 12 home runs. Mickey Gasper is another wild card, but his versatility makes him an intriguing utility option. He played first base and catcher last season and has played some second base in the Puerto Rican Winter League. Gasper hit .328/.440/.531 (.970) with 27 doubles and 12 home runs at Double- and Triple-A. He hasn’t proven he can handle an extended big-league workload behind the plate, though, and scouts are skeptical he ever will.

In such a scenario, the Twins might adopt a three-man catcher rotation, with playing time split roughly as follows:

    • Starter: 90 games (Vázquez, if retained, or Jeffers in this role)
    • Cartaya: 45 games
    • Camargo: 10 games
    • Gasper: Remaining games in a utility/third catcher capacity

This structure could allow the Twins to balance experience with development, while maintaining flexibility in their lineup. But is it realistic to expect this group to hold up over a 162-game season?

The Twins have long emphasized defense behind the plate, which was a key reason for signing Vázquez to a multi-year deal. Among the remaining options, however, there are significant defensive questions. Jeffers ranked in the 14th percentile or lower in Fielding Run Value, Blocks Above Average, and Framing, but improved to the 73rd percentile or higher in Caught Stealing Above Average and Pop Time. Cartaya has the tools to develop into a reliable defender, but is still working on pitch framing and game management. Camargo has a strong arm, as he threw out 30% of runners at Triple-A, but he struggles with some of the other nuances behind the plate. Gasper is versatile but may not provide the defensive reliability typically expected from a catcher.

    A Utility Role for Gasper
Gasper’s ability to play multiple positions could make him a valuable part of a three-catcher system. He could serve as a backup at first base or in the corner outfield while providing depth behind the plate. This kind of versatility might help the Twins keep their roster flexible, especially if injuries arise or if they want to give regular rest to their starters.

However, Gasper’s limited MLB experience leaves questions about whether he can handle sporadic playing time effectively. The Twins might not believe he is a big-league catcher, but he could fill the role in an emergency situation. For the three-catcher rotation to work, the Twins would need to trust Gasper in this hybrid role, while ensuring he gets enough reps to stay sharp.

Should the Twins Make the Switch?
The idea of a three-catcher rotation isn’t without precedent, but it does come with risks. Balancing playing time while maintaining defensive and offensive production can be a delicate task. If the Twins trade Jeffers or Vázquez, they’ll need to assess whether the remaining group can handle the position’s responsibilities.

A trade would likely indicate that the Twins are confident in their young catchers’ development. Still, the team may need a veteran depth piece to serve as an insurance policy. Otherwise, they’ll be betting on Cartaya’s development getting back on track after years of detour; Camargo’s continued growth; and Gasper’s ability to thrive in a utility role.

The Twins’ catching situation could undergo a dramatic shift this offseason, and a three-catcher rotation might be the best way to maximize the potential of their roster. However, it’s far from a perfect solution. If the team decides to trade one of their veteran catchers, they’ll need to carefully manage playing time and development to ensure the position doesn’t become a weakness in 2025.

Would this approach be successful? Do the Twins have enough catching depth? Leave a comment and start the discussion.

The Minnesota Twins have built an impressive catching depth that could lead to a three-catcher rotation in the 2025 season. With the emergence of top prospects and the continued success of current catchers, the Twins are in a unique position to utilize all three players behind the plate.

The trio of catchers includes the veteran All-Star, Mitch Garver, who has been a consistent force both offensively and defensively. Alongside him is prospect Ryan Jeffers, who has shown immense potential and could be a future star in the making. Rounding out the group is prospect Ben Rortvedt, who has also shown promise and could provide a solid contribution behind the plate.

By rotating these three catchers, the Twins can keep their players fresh and maximize their strengths throughout the season. Garver can provide leadership and experience, Jeffers can offer a youthful energy and power at the plate, and Rortvedt can bring a defensive prowess and solid bat.

With this catching depth, the Twins have the luxury of having multiple options behind the plate and can create a dynamic rotation that keeps opposing teams on their toes. It will be exciting to see how the three-catcher rotation unfolds in the 2025 season and how it impacts the Twins’ success on the field.

  • Utah Hockey Club vs Minnesota Wild Odds

Both teams have demonstrated that they keep a tight ship to open games. Utah has the second-lowest GIFT rate in the league at 45%, a percentage that rises only slightly to 47% when on the road. Utah specializes in low-event hockey to open a match.

Minnesota is another team that’s kept things quiet to open games with the sixth-lowest GIFT rate at 51%. The Wild might be excited to get Karill Kaprizov and Jared Spurgeon back from injury, but don’t expect either to be at game speed just yet, Kaprizov hasn’t played since December 23 and Spurgeon has been out since December 31, they’ll be rusty and won’t impact the game until later into proceedings.

If the Timberwolves keep playing like this, they’ll bump their record up to 23-21 in no time. On the other hand, the Mavericks will have to make due with a 23-21 record unless they turn things around (and fast).

    What to Know

The Minnesota Timberwolves are taking a road trip to face off against the Dallas Mavericks at 7:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday at American Airlines Center. The Mavericks have the home-court advantage, but the Timberwolves are expected to win by 2.5 points.

Last Monday, the Timberwolves didn’t have quite enough to beat the Grizzlies and fell 108-106. Minnesota was up 53-37 in the second but couldn’t hold on to the lead.

Despite their defeat, the Timberwolves saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Naz Reid, who went 11 for 20 en route to 29 points plus eight rebounds, was perhaps the best of all. Julius Randle, on the other hand, was considerably less helpful: he went 0-7 from long range.

Meanwhile, the point spread may have favored the Mavericks last Monday, but the final result did not. They fell to the Hornets 110-105. The contest was a 55-55 toss-up at halftime, but Dallas couldn’t quite close it out.

The Mavericks might have lost, but man, Daniel Gafford was a machine: he dropped a double-double on 31 points and 15 rebounds. Gafford’s performance made up for a slower game against the Thunder on Friday. The team also got some help courtesy of Kyrie Irving, who scored 33 points plus three steals.

The Mavericks struggled to work together and finished the game with only 19 assists. They were dismantled by their opponents in that department as the Hornets posted 28.

Minnesota’s loss ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 22-21. As for Dallas, their defeat was their sixth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 23-20.

The Timberwolves didn’t have too much breathing room in their matchup against the Mavericks in their previous matchup back in December of 2024, but they still walked away with a 105-99 victory. Will the Timberwolves repeat their success, or do the Mavericks have a better game plan this time around? We’ll find out soon enough.

  • Minnesota Timberwolves turn back a final push by Dallas

DALLAS – If there was ever a time for the Timberwolves to face Dallas on the road, it was Wednesday. Luka Doncic was still out because of a calf injury he suffered when the teams last met on Christmas Day. Center Dereck Lively is also out for multiple months because of a foot injury. Klay Thompson was also watching from the bench because of an ankle sprain.

The Wolves were down Donte DiVincenzo (toe sprain) but had the rest of their roster available to stop a two-game slide.

The Wolves gutted out a 115-114 victory after building a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter and hanging on down the stretch. The Wolves couldn’t secure rebounds in the final minutes and allowed Dallas to cut their lead to 112-111 with 22.3 seconds to play.

The Wolves opened the fourth by extending their four-point lead to 12 on a 13-5 run that featured a pair of three-pointers from Naz Reid and another from Nickeil Alexander-Walker. But after some frustrations with the officiating — Reid drew a technical in the fourth quarter — Dallas cut the lead to 101-100 before a 5-0 Wolves run. The Wolves got a pair of offensive rebounds on one possession before Edwards ended it with a layup.

On a night Edwards was inefficient (6-for-19, 21 points) the Wolves got a needed lift from Jaden McDaniels and Mike Conley. McDaniels stuffed the stat sheet with 26 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Conley played one of his best games of the season with 18 points, eight assists, five rebounds.

The Wolves’ starting lineup again had a rough beginning offensively as it opened 1-for-6. The Wolves’ saving grace was an 8-for-9 start from the free-throw line in the first. But that quick whistle from the officials had a flip side — the refs called fouls early and often on the Wolves. Dallas was in the penalty less than six minutes into the first, and McDaniels was on the bench in foul trouble.

The shorthanded Mavericks also couldn’t score, and a sleepy first quarter ended with the Wolves trailing 22-17. They were 4-for-16 in the quarter.

After Dallas had an 11-0 run toward the end of the first quarter, a blended Wolves lineup finally got some offense going in the second quarter. McDaniels got out in transition multiple times for 11 first-half points while Reid had six off the bench in a 12-4 Wolves spurt that gave them a 40-38 lead and forced a Dallas timeout with 5:23 to play. The Wolves were 13-for-21 in the second quarter after shaking off the first-quarter rust, but Dallas also picked it up offensively in the second behind 16 points from P.J. Washington. The Mavericks shot 50% in the first half. Finch had said that when DiVincenzo went out they likely would have to extend the rotation to nine players, but he ended up playing only eight in the first half, and the eighth, Rob Dillingham, played only seven mintues. Edwards was 1-for-6 in the first half.

In a nail-biting finish, the Minnesota Timberwolves held off a late surge by the Dallas Mavericks to secure a crucial victory. The Timberwolves, led by Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards, managed to maintain their lead despite a strong push from the Mavericks in the final minutes of the game.

The Timberwolves’ defense stepped up when it mattered most, forcing turnovers and making key stops to prevent the Mavericks from completing their comeback. Towns and Edwards were instrumental on both ends of the court, with Towns dominating in the paint and Edwards showcasing his scoring ability.

The victory was a much-needed boost for the Timberwolves, who are fighting for a playoff spot in a competitive Western Conference. The win also highlighted the team’s resilience and ability to close out games under pressure.

As the Timberwolves continue their playoff push, this victory over the Mavericks will surely give them confidence and momentum moving forward. With Towns and Edwards leading the way, the Timberwolves have shown that they are a force to be reckoned with in the NBA.
