    According to the museum, the legislation to recognize King was first introduced just four days after his assassination on April 4, 1968, “but took 15 years of persistence by civil rights activists for the holiday to be approved by the federal government and an additional 17 years for it to be recognized by all 50 states.”

  • Treacherous conditions expected as skiers head to high country for MLK weekend


    GOLDEN, Colo. — The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is warning travelers about icy and snowy road conditions expected Friday night and Saturday morning as skiers head to the high country for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend.

    Drivers heading up Interstate 70 should prepare for significant travel difficulties, including the risk of flash freezing.

    “It’s going to be a mess,” said Dave Riggs, who stopped to fill up near Genesee before embarking on his journey on westbound I-70.

    Riggs decided to fuel up in anticipation of potential delays.

    “Just coming up the hill, it got real slippery. So I pulled over here to fuel up just in case I have to spend the night somewhere,” he added.

    Many drivers are taking CDOT’s warnings seriously, with some opting to stay off the roads altogether.

    “Not going skiing. Staying home, bundle up, watch some movies, all that good stuff,” said Kim, a driver who also stopped near Genesee.

    The winter storm is expected to create challenges not only for travelers but maintenance crews. CDOT’s plows are outfitted with technology that measures road friction to determine the appropriate de-icing and anti-icing products needed to maintain safety on the highways.

    Charlie Stubblefield, owner of Mountain Recovery, is anticipating an influx of service calls this weekend.

    The towing company typically responds to about 15 incidents per day. Stubblefield expects that number to skyrocket to around 75.

    “There’s going to be one minute where the roads are going to be just dry to wet and not frozen over, and the next minute, around that corner wherever you’re going to be, it’s going to be totally frozen,” Stubblefield warned. “You’re going to be out of control. Be prepared. Don’t take anything for granted.”

    Stubblefield also emphasized the importance of moving over for anyone on the side of the road, if you do need to travel.

    CDOT has reported record ski travel for MLK weekends in the past. Last year nearly 165,000 drivers traveled both east and westbound through the Eisenhower Tunnel.

  • Civil rights icon Ruby Bridges to join Spartanburg MLK event |


    SPARTANBURG — As part of a week of activities to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day that’s underway, residents can hear from one of the best-known figures of the Civil Rights Era.

    Ruby Bridges will speak during the community celebration at 3 p.m. Jan. 19 at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium.

    Bridges was the first Black student to integrate an all-White elementary school in Louisiana in November 1960. A well-circulated photo captured the moment, which Norman Rockwell also recorded in his famous 1964 painting, “The Problem We All Live With.”

    Her involvement with civil Rights didn’t stop in 1960. Bridges later established the Ruby Bridges Foundation, which aims to help younger generations on their way to a better and more peaceful future.

    Spartanburg spokesperson Christopher George said Bridges’ planned appearance is thanks to Deputy City Manager Mitch Kennedy.

    “(Kennedy) had some potential contacts there and reached out to her folks, and she was available, and we were able to secure her for it,” George said. “Really got to give Mitch credit on that one.”

    While that might be the main event, the city’s 38th annual MLK Unity Week also includes a unity walk and day of service.

    Here is the full list of upcoming events:

    • Jan. 17: Kindness Day, which encourages an extra effort to be kind
    • Jan. 18: Walk as One starting at 9 a.m. at the Cleveland Park Event Center
    • Jan: 19: Community Celebration at 3 p.m. at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium
    • Jan. 20: United Way Day of Service starts at 7:30 a.m. at the Dr. T.K. Gregg Community Center with a community breakfast

    Spartanburg celebrated MLK Day well before South Carolina recognized it as a state holiday in 2000, the last to do so in the nation.

    George said the now almost weeklong celebration started in the city as a “simple gathering around a flag pole” and has grown because of work with community partners.

    “We have a very long tradition of recognizing the day,” he said. “It’s grown into this really big community event that folks look forward to every year.”







    Spartanburg Walk as One celebration 2024

    The annual Walk as One event on Jan. 13, 2024. This year the walk, part of the Martin Luther King Unity Week Celebration, will be held on Jan. 18.




    He added that the mission continues as the city is committed to seeing a more equitable and just Spartanburg. The day before the community celebration is the annual walk starting at Cleveland Park, which unites residents from all backgrounds for a roughly 2-mile walk.

    On Jan. 20, when many don’t work thanks to its designation as a holiday, residents are encouraged to volunteer their time for public service. For more information, visit uwpiedmont.org/mlkday.

    During the Jan. 13 City Council meeting, Mayor Jerome Rice encouraged residents to join the day of service.

    “It’s a national holiday but here in Spartanburg, it’s a day on, not a day off,” Rice said.

  • Ruby Bridges to speak at UChicago’s 2025 MLK commemoration


    Bridges was born in 1954, the same year as the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision, which ordered the integration of public schools. By 1960, resistance to the ruling in New Orleans forced a federal judge to order schools to integrate. On Nov. 14, 1960, Bridges became the first and only Black student to attend William Frantz Elementary School. White parents removed their children in protest; teachers refused to teach at the school. For the entire year, Bridges was the only student in her class. Despite death threats and constant harassment, she never missed a day.

    Her historic walk, and the bravery of the Bridges family, galvanized the desegregation of public education in the U.S. and was immortalized in one Norman Rockwell’s most famous paintings The Problem We All Live With. Since becoming a household name, Bridges’ life story has appeared in countless books, television shows and on film.

    Bridges has since established the Ruby Bridges Foundation to promote tolerance and change through education. Each year on Nov. 14, the foundation leads Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day, an annual day of dialog to inspire students to take part in their own forms of activism.


    Bridges is also the author of several books for young readers including Through My Eyes (1999), This Is Your Time (2020), I Am Ruby Bridges (2022). In 2024, she released Dear Ruby, Hear Our Hearts, a compilation of responses to letters from concerned young students across the country about issues ranging from bullying to climate change to racism.

    “These pages truly speak to the power of children!” Bridges said of the book.

    Bridges is the recipient of numerous awards, including the NAACP Martin Luther King Award, the Presidential Citizens Medal, and honorary doctorate degrees from Connecticut College, College of New Rochelle, Columbia University Teachers College and Tulane University. In March 2024, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.
