Allez Paris ! #PSG #Monaco #Ligue1

  • AS Monaco opent jacht op Ajax-captain Henderson – Voetbal International

AS Monaco opent jacht op Ajax-captain Henderson

AS Monaco is naar verluidt geïnteresseerd in Ajax-captain Henderson.

  • Starting lineups Inter Milan vs Monaco: Thuram & Barella start

Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi has decided to start Nicolo Barella and Marcus Thuram at home against Monaco. This evening’s Champions League Match Day 8 kicks off at 21.00 CET.

Inter are looking to secure a top-four finish after beating Sparta Prague 1-0 on the road in the previous round.

The Nerazzurri played a goalless draw against Manchester City in the opening round of the Champions League.

However, they had since won four consecutive league-phase games without conceding before losing at Bayer Leverkusen. Moreover, Inter Milan just thrashed Lecce 4-0 last Saturday in the Serie A.

Furthermore, with games every three days, the Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi has often rotated the squad.

But that won’t necessarily be the case tonight, considering the stakes are high. Indeed, Inter must take three points to lock down a place in the top four.

Nicolo Barella & Marcus Thuram Start For Inter Milan Vs Monaco

Firstly, in defense, injury has forced Inzaghi’s hand. Center-back Francesco Acerbi is absent due to a muscle strain he suffered against Hellas Verona in November.

Therefore, Dutch veteran Stefan de Vrij starts in his place.

Meanwhile, in midfield, there are further changes. Kristjan Asllani deputizes for the injured Hakan Calhanoglu.

Furthermore, Nicolo Barella and Henrikh Mkhitaryan start in the middle of the park. Therefore, Davide Frattesi and Piotr Zielinski have been benched.

In goalmeanwhile, Yann Sommer keeps his starting spot.

And on the flanks, there are no changes. In-form Denzel Dumfries starts at right-wingback, with former Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian benched.

Carlos Augusto is benched with Federico Dimarco starting.

Furthermore, in attack Inzaghi has given the nod to Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram. It means Marko Arnautovic begins on the bench.

Aside from Calhanoglu and Acerbi being out, Inter have no other injury concerns.

Finally, Joaquin Correa and Tomas Palacios are not part of the Inter Milan Champions League squad.

Official Starting Lineups: Inter Milan vs Monaco

INTER (3-5-2): Sommer; Pavard, De Vrij, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Asllani, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Lautaro.

  • Preview: Inter Milan vs. Monaco – prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday’s Champions League clash between Inter Milan and Monaco, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Inter Milan and Monaco meet at San Siro on matchday eight of the Champions League league phase with both clubs still seeking to ensure a direct route into the last 16.

All of the teams from third to 13th are still in with a chance of making or missing the top eight, including these two, but the hosts are in a very comfortable position, with Monaco needing a big night.

    Match preview

It has been a very good week for Simone Inzaghi‘s Inter, as they have navigated two winnable away trips with consummate professionalism.

After a 1-0 victory in the Czech capital against Sparta Prague last midweek, Inter kept the pressure on Napoli at the top of Serie A by thrashing Lecce 4-0 on Sunday.

The Nerazzurri are three points behind Napoli domestically, but find themselves three points inside the top eight in the Champions League, following that win in Prague a week ago, and even with a defeat here, it is unlikely the 2023 finalists will drop out.

Form suggests they have nothing to worry about either, with Inter now 12 Champions League home matches without defeat – their best run since going unbeaten across their first 28 games at San Siro in the competition between 1963 and 2002.

Defensive solidity is Inter’s strongest feature, with five consecutive clean sheets in Europe at home heading into this clash, and they have only let in one goal across the entire league phase so far – the outright best.

No team has kept six straight clean sheets at home in the UCL since Atletico Madrid in 2016, while the last Italian team to do so was Juventus back in 2005, and after shutting out the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal already, visitors Monaco have a big ask on their hands.

After opening with a 0-0 draw away to Man City, and a 4-0 win over Red Star Belgrade, Inter’s last five Champions League games have all ended 1-0, with the Italian champions only coming out on the losing side once in that run – away to Bayer Leverkusen.

Despite losing on their two previous visits to San Siro to face Inter, Monaco enter this fixture on the back of a good week as well, after beating Aston Villa and returning to winning ways domestically against Rennes.

Monaco manager Adi Hutter pictured on July 20, 2024© Imago

Adi Hutter‘s men failed to win any of their previous four Ligue 1 games before the weekend, and also went out of the Coupe de France on penalties to Reims, but a 3-2 success over Rennes ensured they did not extend that winless run to what would have been their worst in five-and-a-half years.

On the continent, the win over Villa means Monaco are back in the hunt for the top eight, regardless of how difficult their final fixture may be on paper.

The club from the principality sit 10th heading into matchday eight, level on points with Leverkusen, who occupy the final last-16 spot.

A win by two clear goals here will move Monaco above Inter, and assure them of a place directly in the last 16, but they have only won one of their last 10 games on the road in the Champions League.

One omen the visitors could cling onto is the fact that the solitary win in that run came in Italy, at the Renato Dell’Ara against Bologna in November, but they will start the game as big outsiders.

    Team News

Inter Milan's Hakan Calhanoglu celebrates scoring on November 6, 2024© Imago

Facing relegation candidates at the weekend, Inzaghi rested some key players such as Nicolo Barella and Federico Dimarco, while also not rushing Yann Bisseck back from injury, after his return to the matchday squad.

Inter will be without their joint-top scorer in the Champions League so far though, with Hakan Calhanoglu currently out with a calf injury, the same issue that leaves Joaquin Correa sidelined, while Francesco Acerbi joins them on the sidelines with a hamstring problem.

That could see the hosts rely on their defensive prowess again, and Yann Sommer is closing in on Andre Onana‘s Champions League club clean sheet record in a single season (eight in 2022-23), having already kept six in seven games.

The majority of Monaco’s injury problems come in attack, with Folarin Balogun and George Ilenikhena likely to miss out, while new signing Mika Biereth is not registered to play.

That means the visitors may have to rely on goals from the back, and no club has seen a higher proportion of their goals scored by defenders in the league phase (31%), including winners from Thilo Kehrer in Bologna, and Wilfried Singo versus Villa.

Singo is a doubt for this one though after missing the weekend win, while midfielder Denis Zakaria was forced off early at the weekend making him doubtful too, in an already injury-disrupted season.

    Inter Milan possible starting lineup:
Sommer; Pavard, De Vrij, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Asllani, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Martinez, Thuram

    Monaco possible starting lineup:
Majecki; Vanderson, Salisu, Kehrer, Mawissa Elebi; Magassa, Camara; Akliouche, Golovin, Ben Seghir; Embolo

    SM words green background

We say: Inter Milan 2-0 Monaco

Considering that 17 of Inter’s last 22 Champions League games have seen two goals or less, including six of their seven this season, another tight encounter is on the cards, but one that should go in favour of the hosts.

Monaco have recovered from a poor start to 2025, but this will be their biggest challenge for quite some time, and the visitors may have to settle for a spot in the playoffs.

Here’s a soccer story via the Associated Press:

The Champions League has never before seen the kind of hectic multi-screen action that will play out in the eighth and final round of games next Wednesday.

When 18 games kick off at the same time, 9 p.m. Central European Time (2000 GMT), many eyes will be on Manchester and Stuttgart hoping to see the highest drama.

Paris Saint-Germain’s remarkable 4-2 beating of Manchester City was the peak of this week’s games as the two financial giants try to avoid embarrassing exits from the new 36-team single-standings format.

Despite the loss, Man City will be among the 24 advancing to the knockout stage if it wins at home against Club Brugge, and PSG can still be eliminated by losing at Stuttgart which sorely needs to win.

“If we don’t win we won’t deserve it,” Man City coach Pep Guardiola said in Paris. “We haven’t got enough points and we’ll have to accept it.”

It is the kind of scenario UEFA wanted from the refreshed format, where it has been hard to predict how many points are needed for a top-24 place.

Back in August, simulations by UEFA stats geeks suggested eight points would be enough to enter the knockout playoffs round.

Now it looks like the 25th-place team next Wednesday will go out with 10 or even 11 points. It could be PSG or Man City, which is currently 25th.

    Few certainties, many possibilities

Liverpool and Barcelona — on a maximum 21 points and 18, respectively — definitely will be among the top eight teams who go direct to the round of 16 in March. That pays 11 million euros ($11.5 million) to each team from the total UEFA prize fund of close to 2.5 billion euros ($2.6 billion).

Another 16 teams — from third-placed Arsenal down to Celtic in 18th with 12 points — have sealed their top-24 finish.

Teams that finish from ninth to 24th enter the knockout playoffs round with games scheduled on Feb. 11-12 and Feb. 18-19. That’s a mostly unwanted extra load in a crowded schedule for teams chasing domestic league and cup titles.

Teams in the danger zone, risking elimination on the last day, range from 19th-placed PSV Eindhoven on 11 points to Shakhtar Donetsk in 27th with just seven points. Man City has a meager eight points and must beat Club Brugge, which has its own jeopardy in 20th place with 11 points.

Nine teams are already eliminated because they cannot catch the 10-point tally of 24th-placed Stuttgart. They include 28th-placed Bologna which was five points down, to overmatched Slovan Bratislava and Young Boys, who have lost all seven games.

    Contenders for top-8 finish

What will it take to finish eighth? Currently it is Bayer Leverkusen with 13 points and a goal difference of plus-6, which is the first tiebreaker. The cut shapes to come at 16 points, or 15 with a healthy goal difference. Leverkusen will host already-eliminated Sparta Prague.

Arsenal and Inter Milan, on 16 points, look safe barring a wild set of results aligning. They control their own destiny when Arsenal plays at low-ranked Girona, and Inter hosts 10th-placed Monaco.

Atletico Madrid and AC Milan also look strong on 15 points. Atletico finishes at already-eliminated Salzburg, and Milan goes to Dinamo Zagreb, which is 26th and must win to stay in contention.

Atalanta in seventh place, on 14 points, has a tough assignment at Barcelona but with the safety net of a plus-14 goal difference far better than teams below in the standings.

The standings are not kind to Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, respectively 15th and 16th — which puts them in line to face likely top seed Liverpool in the round of 16.

Bayern is strongly favored to beat Slovan and finish on 15 points, and Madrid could yet rise to eighth place despite languishing in 22nd after six rounds.

Madrid is on 12 points with a plus-5 goal difference before going to Brest, which also is in the mix. The surprise French debutant is 13th with 13 points.

In the mid-table logjam, ninth-placed Aston Villa hosts Celtic, and Lille hosting Feyenoord is 12th vs 11th.

    Who’s in jeopardy?

Man City, of course, plus PSG and Stuttgart among four teams on 10 points. Stuttgart’s goal difference of minus-1 means a draw against PSG might not be enough to survive.

Sporting Lisbon in 23rd will advance with a win at home against Bologna, and 20th-placed Benfica might need just a point at Juventus, the draw specialist of Europethis season. Juventus has 12 points in 17th place, which risks a tough playoffs opponent just for the right to then face Liverpool or Barcelona.

In 19th place, with 11 points and a plus-3 goal difference, PSV likely is safe unless taking a heavy defeat from visiting Liverpool. In 27th place, Shakhtar must win at Borussia Dortmund, which is 14th.

    Knockout rounds draw dates

Pairings for the knockout playoffs are made on Jan. 31 at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. Nos. 9-16 in the standings will be seeded and host the second leg. Nos. 17-24 are unseeded and host the first game.

There are two new features this season. Teams from the same country can face each other before the quarterfinals and there will be no separate draws for the quarterfinals and semifinals. The bracket is seeded and set like a tennis tournament.

The round of 16 draw on Feb. 21 will give all teams a clear path to the May 31 final at Bayern’s stadium in Munich.
