Winter storm to bring snow, avalanches to western Montana
A month of relatively little snowfall in the mountains of western Montana took snow depth in the region from above average a month ago to below average for late January. But now a weekend storm is set to deliver a foot or more of fresh powder at high elevations, and possibly a few inches at middle elevations. Valleys are expected to see less than 1 inch.
The incoming weather system, expected to begin impacting the area Friday afternoon, is likely to snarl vehicle travel over mountain passes and elevate avalanche danger in the backcountry as fresh snow builds up on top of a snowpack that contains weak layers unable to support the extra weight.

On Friday morning, the Idaho Panhandle Avalanche Center issued an avalanche watch that warned of “very dangerous avalanche conditions.”
“Heavy snowfall and strong winds may be sufficient to overload very weak snow layers and cause a widespread cycle of avalanches large enough to bury, injure, or kill a person,” the watch stated. “Some of these avalanches could release naturally, and it will become very easy for backcountry travelers to trigger them.”
The Flathead Avalanche Center in northwest Montana also issued an avalanche watch on Friday, cautioning on Facebook that “we have all the necessary ingredients to develop dangerous avalanche conditions in the next 24 hours.”
The West Central Montana Avalanche Center, based in Missoula, tracks, analyzes and advises on snowpack conditions and avalanche danger across a broad forecast area stretching from Lost Trail Pass on the south to the Seeley area on the north. The nonprofit has not yet been able to issue forecasts or avalanche watches and warnings so far this winter because it lost about half its annual budget, and liability protection, when the U.S. Forest Service cut its funding to the organization for this season.
However, forecasters will issue an updated general information product online Saturday morning, advising backcountry recreators on what they are likely to encounter as the storm adds weight to the snowpack. That information will be available at missoulaavalanche.org.
As of midday Friday, the National Weather Service predicted 10-20 inches of snow would accumulate around Lolo Pass, on U.S. Highway 12 southwest of Missoula, from Friday afternoon through Saturday evening. Another 2-4 inches could accumulate Sunday night into Monday.
Lookout Pass, on Interstate 90 west of Missoula, was predicted to get 14-25 inches by Saturday evening. Lost Trail Pass, on U.S. Highway 93 south of Missoula and Hamilton, was predicted to get 5-11 inches in the same timeframe, but with an additional 3-7 inches coming Sunday into Monday.
Mountain temperatures were predicted to be in the mid-20 degrees Fahrenheit overnight from Friday into Saturday, with predicted highs on Saturday in the upper 20s and low 30s, just below freezing. Beginning Saturday evening, an incursion of arctic air is expected to drop overnight lows into the low to mid-teens. Sunday’s highs were predicted to be in the low 20s, with overnight lows into Monday in the low teens or single digits.
From a snowpack-loading standpoint, that means the storm is likely to come through “right-side-up,” said Avalanche Forecaster Cam Mackenzie, with heavier, higher-density snow falling at the beginning of the storm and lighter, drier snow falling toward the end.
Regardless, he said, “We have potential for avalanche hazard to increase.”
Avalanches are possible on any slope 30 degrees or steeper, and can be triggered remotely and without warning from above, below or adjacent to a slope that steep. Avalanches are most likely to begin on slopes between 35 and 45 degrees.
Avalanches are the leading cause of death by any natural hazard on national forests, killing an average of 25-30 people in the U.S. each year, according to the National Avalanche Center, a program of the U.S. Forest Service. Almost all of the deaths occur on lands in the National Forest System, where nearly all backcountry winter travel like ski touring, snowmobiling, mountaineering and ice climbing takes place.
As of the past week, public observations and information from the West Central Montana Avalanche Center indicate layers of crusts and loose, angular, faceted snow crystals exist near the top of the snowpack in many locations across the region. There was also widespread surface hoar — vertical, leaf-like ice formations atop the snow. Any of those things could become a dangerous weak layer within the snowpack once buried Friday night into Saturday, although wind could blow the surface hoar down as the storm rolls in.
Mackenzie said his mindset when new snow accumulates is to consider what it’s falling on. In this case it’s potential weak layers.
“If you come across 6 inches of more of new snow,” he said, “or you’re seeing signs that snow is being transported by the wind and developing slabs, then avalanches are possible.”

ASU’s Montana Warren set to start for Shamari Simmons vs Texas
The Arizona State Sun Devils are used to being the underdog and overcoming obstacles, so they’re heading into the Jan. 1 Peach Bowl against heavily favored Texas (12-2) in a familiar position.
The Sun Devils (11-2) come in as Big 12 champions, winning six straight games. Texas is the SEC runner-up, having lost the conference title game to Georgia but was favored in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal by 13.5 points as of Friday night.
The latest hurdle ASU is facing is the absence of a key player. Senior nickel Shamari Simmons will have to sit out the first half after being assessed a targeting foul in the second half of the Big 12 championship game against Iowa State earlier this month.
Get “Forks Up,” our ASU collector’s edition bookASU head coach Kenny Dillingham exhausted all appeal channels so Simmons will be relegated to role of spectator for two quarters, with his spot in the starting lineup to be filled by redshirt freshman Montana Warren.
Simmons, who has 70 tackles and forced three fumbles, is taking the setback in stride. He was one of four ASU defensive standouts who met with the media Friday ahead of the Peach Bowl.
The team will depart for Atlanta on Sunday.
“God always has a plan,” Simmons said, “and I just feel like his plan right now is just basically showing who Montana Warren is to the world. He’s going to be a great defensive back for Arizona State for a long time coming.
“Montana always like, when I’m on the sideline, like when I’m starting and Montana is on the sideline, he does a great job of just telling me what he sees on the sideline. I’ve just got to be that for this first half. I’m excited to see him play.”
Warren, one of many players on the ASU roster from Texas, has seen some action in all 13 games. He came to ASU as a true freshman in 2023 but sustained a shoulder injury at Camp Tontozona and missed the balance of last season. ASU had big leads in its past two games so Dillingham used his second-teamers for much of those second halves.
Warren has also played on special teams and had a big-play moment against Central Florida, returning a blocked punt 46 yards for a touchdown.
Safety Xavion Alford is the leader in the back end of the defense and has no doubt Warren will rise to the occasion.
It’s not the first time the team has dealt with the scenario. When the Sun Devils faced Utah they were without not one, but two starters, from targeting calls in the previous game. ASU prevailed 27-19, giving up only nine points during the first half when they were down two players. Caleb McCullough subbed for linebacker Keyshaun Elliott in that one and finished with 12 tackles and two interceptions — quite a game for an understudy.
“This team, we just don’t flinch no matter what happens, getting down in games, losing a key player,” said Alford, one of six players on the ASU roster who were in the Texas program at one time. “Regardless of what it is, we just have that next-man or next-thing mentality.
“We’ve been dealing with adversity all year, and we’ve been able to overcome it in our own ways. Credit to the whole staff. All the way throughout the whole offseason, spring ball, fall camp, they put us in chaos situations so we know how to respond. Everything about the offseason was about responding and finishing, finishing games. It’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish, and finish is a big word in our program.”
The Sun Devils will be facing a Texas offense that ranks sixth among all FBS programs in total offense (494 ypg). The Longhorns are averaging 202 yards through the air and 292 on the ground.
Defensive coordinator Brian Ward said Warren has been working with the first team in practices so he can get more work than he would have if he were still with the twos.
“I’m excited about Montana,” Ward said. “We’ve been excited about him since the moment he stepped on campus. Now’s the time for him to show what he can do. He’s more than ready. He’s been ready most of the year.
“It’s just the other three safeties have played such a high level of football and have played such outstanding football and he’s played some nickel for us, he’s played some free. Whenever he’s come in, he’s been very consistent, very stable for us. We expect him to be that presence next Wednesday.”

GREAT FALLS — Several people are going to kick off the new year with a much bigger bank account, thanks to the Montana Lottery. As part of this year’s Montana Millionaire, there are four grand prizes worth $1 million each.
Winning ticket numbers announced for Montana Millionaire
Montana Millionaire sold 500,000 tickets on November 1st; each ticket cost $20. All tickets sold out within three hours.
The four grand prize winning tickets were drawn on Thursday, December 26, 2024. The winning tickets and where they were sold:

Several people have asked KRTV how the casinos and the Harley Davidson shop were able to sell lottery tickets, since they don’t open until 9 a.m., and all of the Montana Millionaire tickets were sold before 8:30 a.m.
The answer is that some businesses opened early on that day in order to accommodate people who wanted to buy tickets, knowing they would sell out within hours.
One specific example of this is the Heidelberg Lounge in Great Falls, which opened at 5:30 a.m. on November 1st to sell tickets and to serve up coffee and donuts for people who didn’t want to risk missing out on a chance to buy a ticket.
$250K PRIZE
The Montana Lottery this year also featured a “Quarter Million Monday” drawing for $250,000 on Monday, December 2, 2024; the winning ticket for that prize was sold at the Office Bar & Motel in Vaughn, a few miles northwest of Great Falls.
The $250,000 prize has not been claimed yet; the winner has six months from the drawing date to claim it. If the prize is not claimed, the money will be transferred to the state’s general fund; the same rule applies to the million-dollar prizes.
PREVIOUS WINNERS
Since the Montana Millionaire began, the following towns have sold winning tickets: six in Billings; five in Great Falls; three in Butte; two in Columbia Falls, and one each in Winnett, East Helena, Kalispell, Dillon, and Laurel.

Due to a change in legislation in 2021, the Montana Lottery is no longer allowed to release names of Montana Millionaire winners unless give consent.
In 2022, no one claimed one of the two Montana Millionaire prizes, so the money went into the State General Fund.
MONTANA MILLIONAIRE FAQ
The Montana Lottery has provided responses to several frequently-asked questions:
- Why don’t you limit Montana Millionaire to Montana residents only? The Montana Lottery is available to everyone of legal age, whether resident or visitor. Limiting the sale of a product to some people while excluding others is discrimination. It would also be contrary to our mission and place an undue burden on our retailers.
- Why don’t you limit the number of Montana Millionaire tickets someone can buy? The mission of the Montana Lottery is to maximize revenue for the State of Montana. Our proceeds fund Montana’s STEM/Healthcare Scholarship Program and contribute to the General Fund. To limit sales of our products would be contrary to our mission and result in less positive impact for the residents of Montana.
- Why don’t you offer Montana Millionaire or another raffle game more than once per year? The Montana Lottery has a large selection of games available every day of the year. We believe Montana Millionaire is special and successful because it’s exclusive. While it is not impossible that we may introduce other raffle games in the future, currently we have made this strategic business decision based on detailed market research and analysis.
WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?
Money generated from the lottery is used in several ways.
“The lottery exists to generate revenue for the State of Montana. Most sales go towards paying prizes, operations, and essentially whatever is left at the end of that is what goes back to the state. That’s determined by state legislative action and the beneficiary, as we call it, has changed a number of times,” Montana Lottery content manager Dan Iverson told MTN News several months ago.
Currently, the first $2.25 million goes to the Montana Stem/Healthcare Scholarship Program, operated by the Office Of The Commissioner Of Higher Education and the Montana University System. Whatever is left goes to the state’s general fund, which is dictated by the legislature.
