  • Morant ruled out by Grizzlies, now ineligible for NBA awards

SAN ANTONIO — The Memphis Grizzlies ruled out star Ja Morant for Friday night’s game against the San Antonio Spurs due to right foot soreness.

Morant missed his 18th game this season, making him ineligible to win regular-season NBA awards; players must play at least 65 games to qualify.

Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins mentioned that Morant had been nursing a foot sprain since a Jan. 9 loss at home to the Houston Rockets.

“Last game against the Spurs he got tangled up, had a little collision there with a Spurs player that really worsened it,” Jenkins said.

Morant, 25, led Memphis with a team-high 21 points and 12 assists Wednesday in a 129-115 victory over the Spurs.

Morant tested the sore foot early Friday, but Jenkins said the two-time All-Star was “trending towards out.” Morant tested the foot again during pregame warmups, before the Grizzlies staff made the decision to sit him.

Memphis is expected to lean more on Scotty Pippen Jr. at point guard with Morant out.

The Grizzlies (26-15) are 10-7 with Morant out of the lineup. A sixth-year veteran, he is averaging 21.4 points, 7.5 assists and 1.3 steals this season.

The Memphis Grizzlies have officially ruled out star point guard Ja Morant for the rest of the season, making him ineligible for any NBA awards this year. Morant suffered a sprained ankle in a recent game and will need time to recover before returning to the court.

This news comes as a blow to both Morant and the Grizzlies, as the young guard was having a breakout season and was considered a front-runner for the NBA’s Most Improved Player award. Morant was also making a strong case for an All-NBA selection and was in the running for the All-Star Game.

Despite this setback, Morant remains optimistic about his recovery and is determined to come back stronger next season. In the meantime, the Grizzlies will have to rely on their depth and resilience to continue their push for a playoff spot in the competitive Western Conference.

Fans of Morant and the Grizzlies will surely miss seeing the dynamic guard on the court, but they can take solace in the fact that he will be back better than ever in the near future. Stay tuned for updates on Morant’s recovery and return to action.

  • Ja Morant throws down wild one-handed dunk on Victor Wembanyama … that didn’t quite count

Jan 15, 2025; San Antonio, Texas, USA; Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant (12) shoots against San Antonio Spurs center center Victor Wembanyama (1) during the second half at Frost Bank Center. Mandatory Credit: Scott Wachter-Imagn Images

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant came up with a ridiculous poster over Victor Wembanyama after the whistle blew. (Scott Wachter-Imagn Images)

Ja Morant thew down what could very well be the best dunk of the season on Wednesday night in San Antonio.

The only problem for the Memphis Grizzlies star, which benefited Victor Wembanyama greatly, was that the dunk didn’t actually count.

Morant was driving around the wing and drew a foul late in the fourth quarter of the Grizzlies’ win over the Spurs on Wednesday. Morant drew the foul very clearly while he was still at the 3-point line, so everything that happened after the whistle blew didn’t count.

But neither Morant nor Wembanyama stopped. Morant kept charging right for the rim, where he ran into the 7-foot-3 star. Expertly, Morant rose up and threw down a wild one-handed dunk over an outstretched Wembanyama, which sent the Grizzlies bench into a tailspin.

    Just watch:

The still shot from under the basket is somehow even better than the video.

Morant finished with 21 points and 12 assists in the Grizzlies’ 129-115 win over the Spurs, which pushed them to 26-15 on the season. It marked their ninth straight over the Spurs, too. Desmond Bane added 21 points, and Santi Aldama finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

Wembanyama had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Spurs. Stephon Castle led them with 26 points, and Devin Vassell added 21 points. They sit at 19-20 on the year and have lost four of their last five games.

And even though it doesn’t technically count in the book, Morant still gets credit for one of the best posters of his career. The two teams will run it back Friday night at the Frost Bank Center, where he’s sure to give it another shot before the whistle blows.

In a recent matchup between the Memphis Grizzlies and the Paris Basketball Club, Ja Morant showed off his electrifying athleticism with a jaw-dropping one-handed dunk over 7-foot-2 center Victor Wembanyama. The crowd erupted in excitement as Morant soared through the air and threw down the vicious slam.

However, to the dismay of fans and players alike, the referee called a charging foul on Morant just before the dunk, nullifying the highlight-reel play. Despite the call, Morant’s dunk will surely be remembered as one of the most impressive plays of the game.

Morant’s incredible leaping ability and fearless attacking mentality make him one of the most exciting young players in the NBA, and this dunk was just another example of his jaw-dropping talent. Fans can only hope that Morant will continue to provide highlight-reel moments like this throughout the season.

Memphis Grizzlies provide Ja Morant injury update, timeline for return

The Memphis Grizzlies have provided an injury update on star point guard Ja Morant, who suffered a knee injury in a recent game. According to team officials, Morant has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 sprain of his left knee and is expected to be out for the next 4-6 weeks.

This news comes as a blow to the Grizzlies, who have been off to a strong start this season with Morant leading the way. The young guard has been averaging 25.5 points, 7.2 assists, and 5.0 rebounds per game, showcasing his talent and potential as a future star in the league.

Despite the setback, the Grizzlies remain optimistic about Morant’s recovery and are confident that he will return to the court stronger than ever. In the meantime, the team will look to rally around their other players and continue to compete at a high level in Morant’s absence.

Fans of the Grizzlies will have to wait patiently for Morant’s return, but the team is hopeful that he will be back in action in time for the latter part of the season. In the meantime, they are asking for support and well wishes for Morant as he works towards a full recovery.

  • Grizzlies star Ja Morant out, considered ‘week-to-week’ with right shoulder injury

Grizzlies star Ja Morant out, considered ‘week-to-week’ with right shoulder injury

Ja Morant’s latest shoulder injury is going to keep him off the floor indefinitely.

The Memphis Grizzlies star is out with a Grade 1 AC joint sprain in his right shoulder after he went down in Friday’s win over the New Orleans Pelicans, the team confirmed on Monday night. There is no timetable for his return, though Morant is now considered “week-to-week.”

Morant left Friday’s 132-124 win at the Smoothie King Center early after he was hit with a hard screen from Pelicans center Daniel Theis. Morant went down hard and immediately started rolling around in pain while pointing to his shoulder, and he initially drew an offensive foul. That, however, was overturned after a Pelicans challenge.

Morant eventually walked off the floor and went to the locker room. He finished with 25 points and seven assists in that win, and he then missed Sunday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Morant has averaged 21.2 points and 7.9 assists per game this season with the Grizzlies. The 25-year-old missed most of last season, first due to a 25-game suspension that stemmed from a string of gun and off-court incidents and then due to a season-ending right shoulder injury he sustained in practice. Morant underwent surgery to repair a labral tear in his right shoulder in January, but he was cleared to return before this season started.

Morant has already missed 13 games this season due to various injuries, though the team has gone 8-5 without him. They will enter Tuesday’s game against the Phoenix Suns with a 22-11 record.

While it sounds like Morant may have avoided the worst, considering it’s just a Grade 1 sprain, re-injuring his shoulder not quite a year out from surgery is undoubtedly concerning for Grizzlies fans. With his recent history, expect Memphis to be extra cautious with his return in the coming weeks.

The Memphis Grizzlies received some unfortunate news as star point guard Ja Morant will be out for an extended period of time due to a right shoulder injury. The team announced that Morant is considered ‘week-to-week’ as he undergoes treatment and rehabilitation.

Morant has been a key player for the Grizzlies this season, averaging 24.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 7.3 assists per game. His dynamic playmaking and scoring ability have been instrumental in the team’s success.

The Grizzlies will need to rely on their depth and other players to step up in Morant’s absence. It will be a challenging stretch for the team as they look to stay competitive in the Western Conference.

Fans of the Grizzlies will be eagerly awaiting Morant’s return to the court and hoping for a speedy recovery. In the meantime, they will continue to support the team as they navigate this injury setback.

  • Injury Notes: Kuzma, Raptors, Morant, Celtics, Suggs

Injury Notes: Kuzma, Raptors, Morant, Celtics, Suggs

The Wizards and Kyle Kuzma are targeting Monday’s rematch with New York for the veteran forward’s return to action, team sources tell Josh Robbins of The Athletic (Twitter link).

As Robbins notes, Kuzma has missed the past 12 games with a sprained rib cartilage, having last played on Nov. 27. The two sides will determine if he’s able to suit up in the hours leading up to the game.

League executives believe the Wizards are “eager” to move Kuzma before the Feb. 6 trade deadline, as Marc Stein reported last week. However, the bonuses in his contract could complicate matters for suitors operating in close proximity to the tax aprons.

Here are a few more injury notes from around the NBA:

    • The Raptors will have a handful of players back in action on Sunday vs. Atlanta, including swingman Bruce Brown, who will be making his season debut following offseason knee surgery, and starting center Jakob Poeltl, who has missed the past four games with a groin issue (Twitter link via Blake Murphy of Sportsnet.ca).
    • Ja Morant will be sidelined for Sunday’s matchup with Oklahoma City due to an AC joint sprain in his right shoulder, the Grizzlies announced (story via Tim MacMahon of ESPN). It’s unclear how much time Morant might miss beyond Sunday’s contest between the top-two seeds in the West.
    • The Celtics will be without Kristaps Porzingis (left ankle sprain) and Jrue Holiday (right shoulder impingement) for Sunday’s contest vs. Indiana, the team announced (Twitter links). Both starters had previously been listed as questionable. Asked about Holiday’s status, head coach Joe Mazzulla suggested the injury was relatively minor, as Jared Weiss of The Athletic tweets. “He’s getting better every day,” Mazzulla said. “He’ll continue to get better and we’ll see how it is.”
    • All-Defensive guard Jalen Suggs sustained a right wrist sprain on Sunday against Brooklyn and was ruled out for the remainder of the game, the Magic announced (via Twitter). Any type of extended absence for Suggs would certainly be rough — Orlando has already been playing without three of its top four scorers (Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Moritz Wagner). Suggs, who signed a lucrative long-term extension with the Magic before the season began, has averaged a career-best 16.8 points per game in 2024/25.

Injury Notes: Kuzma, Raptors, Morant, Celtics, Suggs

    1. Kyle Kuzma: The Los Angeles Lakers forward is dealing with a knee injury that has sidelined him for several games. The team is being cautious with Kuzma’s recovery to ensure he is fully healthy before returning to action.

    2. Toronto Raptors: The Raptors have been hit hard by injuries this season, with key players like Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby, and Fred VanVleet all missing time due to various ailments. The team is hopeful that they can get their roster back to full strength soon.

    3. Ja Morant: The Memphis Grizzlies star point guard suffered a knee injury that will keep him out of action for several weeks. Morant’s absence is a big blow to the Grizzlies, who will need to rely on their depth to make up for his production.

    4. Boston Celtics: The Celtics have been dealing with a number of injuries to key players, including Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, and Al Horford. The team is hoping to get their roster healthy soon in order to make a push for the playoffs.

    5. Jalen Suggs: The Orlando Magic rookie guard is currently sidelined with an ankle injury. Suggs has shown promise in his first season in the NBA, and the Magic are hopeful that he can make a quick recovery and get back on the court soon.
