  • Aggies Host Lobos Saturday for Battle Between Mountain West’s Best

    • Utah State enters the weekend 19-2 and is 9-1 in Mountain West play. The team’s .905 winning percentage is tied for the second best in Division I basketball this season, behind only Auburn (.950 – 19-1) and even with Drake. Just four teams have 19 or more wins, and just six teams have two or fewer losses.

    • Saturday’s game pits the top two teams in the Mountain West standings against each other, both sides sitting at 9-1. The teams will face off against in Albuquerque on Feb. 16.

    • Currently 19-2, USU is off to its fourth-best start to a season in program history through at least 21 games. The only better starts were: 2008-09 (24-1), 2003-04 (25-2) and 2010-11 (22-2). Last year’s team also opened the season 19-2.

    • Utah State’s 9-1 start to MW play is tied for its best 10-game start since joining the league. The other Aggie team to start 9-1 was in 2020-21.

    • Aggie head coach Jerrod Calhoun has won 19 of his first 21 games at the helm of the program. His 19 wins are tied for the most among first-year head coaches in Division I this season.

    • Sophomore guard Mason Falslev is one of three players in the country this season to have totaled at least 49 steals and 130 rebounds.

    • Fifth year guard Ian Martinez ranks in the top 10 in the Mountain West in scoring average, free throw percentage, free throws made, and 3-pointers made. He has scored in double-figures in all 21 games this year.

    • In 17 of Utah State’s 21 games this season, the Aggie bench has outscored that of its opponent for a combined total of 369-381. USU’s 30.43 bench points rank 21st in the nation.

    • Utah State ranks fifth in the nation with 18.9 assists per game. The program record for a season is 18.0 in 2021-22. The team’s assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.69 ranks sixth nationally. On the season, USU has 396 total assists with just 235 turnovers.

    • The Aggies are 11-1 at home this year, and have won 39 of their past 43 games in the Spectrum spanning back to the 2022-23 season.

    • This will be the 48th all-time meeting between Utah State and UNLV, a series which began in 1952. The Aggies lead the series 34-13, including an 18-2 record over New Mexico in Logan. USU has won eight of the past nine and 11 of the past 13 meetings.

The stage is set for an epic showdown as the Utah State Aggies host the New Mexico Lobos this Saturday in a battle between the Mountain West Conference’s top teams. Both teams have been on a hot streak, with the Aggies boasting a 7-1 record and the Lobos sitting at 6-2.

The Aggies, led by head coach Blake Anderson, have been dominant on both sides of the ball this season. Quarterback Logan Bonner has been lighting up the scoreboard with his arm, while running back Calvin Tyler Jr. has been a force on the ground. The defense, anchored by linebacker Justin Rice, has been stingy against opposing offenses.

On the other side, the Lobos, under head coach Danny Gonzales, have been equally impressive. Quarterback Terry Wilson has been a dual-threat weapon, while running back Bobby Cole has been racking up yards on the ground. The defense, led by linebacker Brandon Shook, has been causing havoc for opposing offenses.

This game is sure to be a battle of wills, with both teams vying for the top spot in the Mountain West Conference. Fans can expect an intense, hard-fought game between two talented teams. Be sure to tune in this Saturday to see who comes out on top in this exciting matchup.

  • Mountain snow, valley rain finally coming to the southwestern US

A storm set on soaking much of Southern California later this weekend will swing inland and bring the first decent rain and mountain snow to parts of the Southwest in weeks, if not months, before the end of January, AccuWeather meteorologists say.

Las Vegas has not had more than a few drops of rain since July 13, with the city currently experiencing its second-longest dry spell in history. At 194 days, as of Friday, it is second only to a stretch of 240 dry days set in 2020. Records date back to 1948.

“Las Vegas is likely to have more rain from this storm than any storm since March,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist John Feerick said. The mid-March storm brought about 0.75 of an inch of rain to McCarran International Airport. The southern Nevada desert city’s historical average annual rainfall is 4.21 inches.

Showers will also make their way across the deserts of Southern California and Nevada as well as the arid locations of Arizona and New Mexico early this coming week. Showers are in the offing for Palm Springs, California; Phoenix and Las Cruces, New Mexico.

The same storm will also drag in plenty of cold air. Several inches of snow are forecast to pile up in the mountains of Southern California later this weekend then spread into the mountains of Arizona and New Mexico from Monday to Tuesday.

Enough snow will fall on the higher elevations of Interstate 40 to make for slippery conditions and slow travel. Similar problems are likely along stretches of I-17 and I-25 in the Southwest. The early stages of the storm will bring some snow to Denver for the first part of this weekend.

“It isn’t out of the question that parts of the Las Vegas Valley could see some snow mixing in on Monday,” Feerick said.

    GET THE FREE ACCUWEATHER APP

The same can occur around Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Tuesday, especially over the heights.

Several inches of snow will pile up in the mountains north of Phoenix, including in the Flagstaff, Arizona, area.

After the storm crosses the mountains in the southwestern U.S. by midweek, it will gain new moisture and energy over the southern Plains. From there, a large swath of snow, wintry mix and rain will develop in New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.

Heavy snow may extend back across northern and central New Mexico, especially over the southern High Plains and mountains.

For many of the ski resorts in the Southwest, this will be the biggest snowstorm since November. In some areas, it will be the biggest storm of the winter season.

After weeks of dry weather, relief is finally on the way for the southwestern United States. A storm system moving in from the Pacific Ocean is set to bring much-needed precipitation to the region, with mountain snow and valley rain expected to arrive in the coming days.

The Sierra Nevada mountains in California are forecasted to receive several feet of snow, providing a boost to the snowpack and water supply for the state. This is welcome news for ski resorts and winter sports enthusiasts who have been eagerly awaiting fresh powder.

In the valleys and low-lying areas, residents can expect to see much-needed rain showers, helping to alleviate drought conditions and replenish soil moisture. Farmers and agricultural workers will be grateful for the moisture, as it will help to support crop growth and ensure a successful growing season.

While the storm may bring some challenges, such as slick roads and potential flooding, the benefits of the precipitation far outweigh the drawbacks. This much-needed moisture will help to mitigate the risk of wildfires and ensure a healthy ecosystem for plants and wildlife.

So, get ready to bundle up and grab your umbrellas, because mountain snow and valley rain are finally on the way to the southwestern US. Let’s embrace the rain and snow and appreciate the beauty and life-giving power of Mother Nature.

  • Las Vegas braces for weekend winter storm with rain, mountain snow

Enjoy calm & quiet weather on Friday ahead of a potent winter storm arriving this weekend, bringing widespread regional rain and mountain snow.

FRIDAY: Expect to see mostly sunny skies in Las Vegas with high temperatures reaching 56 degrees this afternoon. Winds will be light out of the northeast and then southeast up to 10 mph.

Air quality is ranked ‘good’ to ‘moderate’ for areas of haze in the central and east valleys. Pollen levels are low. There’s a chance we could see wildfire smoke from California fires move into Southern Nevada late this evening, overnight into Saturday morning as winds shift.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Variable clouds are in the forecast this evening with skies going from partly cloudy to mostly cloudy overnight. Valley low temperatures will drop to around 37 degrees. Winds will be out of the west/northwest up to 10 mph.

EXTENDED FORECAST: A significant winter storm will be moving into the Southwest this weekend. This next weather maker will bring widespread rain to the region and mountain snow. It’s been 194 consecutive days since Las Vegas has had measurable rain but that may change this weekend with measurable rain anticipated in the valley.

The National Weather Service has issued a WINTER STORM WATCH for the Spring Mountains & Sheep Range from 4:00 am Sunday through 10:00 am Tuesday. Around 10″ to 18″ of snow may be possible above 7,000 ft in elevation with 3″-8″ above 5,000 ft.

Low pressure moving south from the Pacific Northwest will pick up moisture off the coastline, and then move inland. The timing of the storm has changed again with the system slowing a bit more. Precipitation amounts have kept fluctuating. Weather models have a difficult time predicting exact rain amounts so many days out because it’s hard to take into account how much moisture will get caught up in the mountains. The bulk of the wet weather will be out west with the most significant snow in the Sierra.

Some of the latest models run as of this morning show around 6″ on Mt. Charleston & around .06″ of rain as the storm total in Las Vegas. The snow level is also expected to drop especially on Monday morning when a few weather models indicate we could see flurries flying in the foothills. Either way, even if just a little rain ends up on the road — because it’s been so dry, roads will be very slick from oils built up by cars. Travel may also be difficult over mountain passes in the next few days.

Use extra caution while out on the roads!

Showers should be clearing out of Southern Nevada by Tuesday afternoon with temperatures warming up next.

Valley highs will rebound from the upper 40s on Monday to daytime temperatures reaching the upper 50s to low 60s at the end of the week.

Beyond the 7-day forecast, temperatures will be back in the low 60s NEXT Friday through Sunday.

Check back for more updates & make it a great day!

Las Vegas is gearing up for a winter storm this weekend, with rain and mountain snow expected to hit the area. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the region, predicting up to 6 inches of snow in the Spring Mountains and possibly even some snowfall in the Las Vegas Valley.

Residents and visitors are urged to be prepared for potentially hazardous driving conditions and to exercise caution while traveling. Road closures and delays are possible, so it’s important to stay informed and plan accordingly.

Despite the unusual weather, Las Vegas is known for its resilience and ability to adapt to changing conditions. So whether you’re out enjoying the snow-capped mountains or seeking shelter from the rain, be sure to stay safe and make the most of this winter wonderland in the desert.
