  • Sean ‘Diddy’ moved to hospital for late night MRI

Sean “Diddy” Combs was taken to the hospital from a federal lockup in Brooklyn under cover of darkness last week, The Post can reveal.

Sources confirmed that he was transported to a nearby hospital about 10 p.m. Thursday to undergo an MRI.

The 55-year-old rap kingpin, who is awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, was taken from the notorious Metropolitan Detention Center to Brooklyn Hospital for the noninvasive test, a source told Page Six.

The medical scan was authorized because his “knee was bothering him,” citing the rapper’s long history of knee issues after he ran the New York marathon, the source said.

The insider added that the hospital visit was done late at night in order to avoid whispers and further speculation from other inmates or prison staffers.

Combs did not stay overnight and was taken back to his cell after the MRI concluded, the source said.

A Bureau of Prisons spokesperson told The Post, “For privacy, safety, and security reasons we do not comment on the conditions of confinement for anyone in our custody to include medical status or medical trips.”

Law enforcement source said they were given a heads up about what occurred “just in case it was leaked and they would have chaos.”

Reps and attorneys for Combs could not immediately be reached for comment.

The music mogul has been held at MDC since he was denied bail on Dec. 3 and is awaiting trial on sex trafficking, racketeering and prostitution charges.

Combs was accused of abusing several women and leading Bad Boy Records as a “criminal enterprise” for more than a decade.

Combs forced his lovers into the “Freak-Offs,” days-long sexual “performances” where the women had sex with male escorts while he watched and masturbated, according to court papers.

He would secretly film the encounters to use as leverage against his alleged victims, the feds claim.

Combs has denied all wrongdoing. His trial is scheduled to begin on May 5.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs was rushed to the hospital late last night for an emergency MRI. The music mogul and entrepreneur was reportedly experiencing severe back pain, leading to concerns about his health.

Fans and supporters are sending well wishes and positive thoughts to Diddy as he undergoes medical tests and treatment. Updates on his condition are expected to be released soon.

Let’s all keep Diddy in our thoughts and hope for a speedy recovery. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available. #GetWellSoonDiddy

  • UFC flyweight Mayra Bueno Silva moved back to Brazil to plan wife’s pregnancy

Mayra Bueno Silva joined The Fighting Nerds ahead of her UFC Saudi Arabia clash with Jasmine Jasudavicius on Feb. 1 but that decision isn’t related to training or her MMA career.

“Sheetara”, who trained at American Top Team in Florida prior to the move, told MMA Fighting that returning to Sao Paulo, the home state of her wife Gloria de Paula, was to start grow the family. Together since August of 2016, Silva and de Paula are now planning to have a baby.

“We’re going to be moms,” Silva said, “so we’ll start the in vitro fertilization process and be close to family, close to home and out moms, because it’s a hard process for Gloria while I’m in camp. I want her to be as comfortable as possible and surrounded by love. That’s why we’re back. I love American Top Team, I love my little man ‘Parrumpa’. We had no issues, nothing like that. We only came back because we decided to become mothers.”

Silva competed for the UFC bantamweight belt in January 2024 and now returns to flyweight looking for more challenges. De Paula, on the other hand, went 0-2 since parting ways with the UFC in June 2022. “Sheetara” also wants to get pregnant one day, she said, but it’s “Glorinha’s” turn now.

“We started the IVF process now,” Silva said. “Gloria will get pregnant now, and in the future it’s my turn. I really want to get pregnant. My dream as a child was to get married and become a mom. I want to get pregnant in the future, yes.

“I dream of being a mother, too, and the end of the career comes faster for women,” she continued. “I believe I have what, five years left in my career? If you think about it, it’s not a lot. Men last longer. So I want to enjoy every little moment, every fight. We fight two, three times a year, and that’s not much for all the hard work we put in. I want to enjoy every process because it all ends so fast, and one day I’ll be telling my kids what I used to do.”

The 33-year-old fighter is cutting back to flyweight more than three years after leaving the division looking for “motivation” and “fun” after coming up short in a title fight at bantamweight.

“It’s the fun of starting something new in a quest for a belt, something that lights up a fire in me again.” Silva said. “Can I do it? Can I go after another belt? It’s hard, but it lights up a cool fire in me, it keeps me alive.”

Cutting the extra 10 pounds isn’t easy, though, and “Sheetara” has to make sacrifices in order to get down to 125 pounds on Friday morning. Yet, Silva said that being “extremely hyperactive” helps her deal with hard tasks. Her last flyweight bout was a decision loss to Manon Fiorot in Las Vegas — and she absolutely hates looking back at that fight week.

“The weight cut for Fiorot is something I don’t even like remembering because she had COVID at that time [and postponed the fight] and I had to cut weight twice,” Silva said. “It was very sad to me, you know? That’s when I had concussion because of the dehydration. It was a horrible fight, the worst fight of my life. That was a very painful process in my life.

“I’m healthy now, I’m fine, I’m cutting down in weight and it’s good. Is it hard? Yeah, sometimes you go to a party and can’t eat. You can’t go to the movies, you have restrictions at home. Sometimes Gloria wants to eat something and I can’t, but I’m trying to enjoy the process because I don’t have much time left doing this.”

Jasudavicius, winner of her past three with two $50,000 performance bonuses cashed, welcomes Silva back to the flyweight division looking to enter the top 10 of the UFC’s 125-pound weight class. Silva knows her well, and sees holes in her game.

“We have similar styles, she’s a grappling finisher and so am I,” Silva said. “I love Jasmine. We’ve trained together at American Top Team and she’s sensational, has super high-level grappling and I have to be careful or she can complicate things for me. But she’s good at something I’m excellent at, which is finishing fights. The match-up is bad for her, I think. We see many holes in her game, but she’s a very tough girl.”

UFC flyweight Mayra Bueno Silva has announced that she is moving back to her home country of Brazil in order to plan for her wife’s pregnancy. The 26-year-old fighter made the decision to return to Brazil in order to be closer to her family and have the support system she needs during this important time in her life.

Silva, who made her UFC debut in 2018, has quickly become a rising star in the flyweight division. Known for her aggressive fighting style and impressive grappling skills, Silva has quickly climbed the ranks and is now looking to take some time off from fighting in order to focus on starting a family with her wife.

In a recent interview, Silva expressed her excitement about the next chapter in her life, saying, “I am so grateful for the opportunity to become a mother and start a family with my wife. This is something we have been dreaming of for a long time and I am thrilled to be able to focus on this new chapter in our lives.”

While Silva is taking a break from fighting to focus on her family, she has made it clear that she is not retiring from the sport and plans to return to the octagon once she has welcomed her new addition to the family. Fans of Silva can expect to see her back in action in the near future, but for now, she is focused on planning for the arrival of her new little one.

  • De’Aaron Fox trade rumors: Kings star admits he has preferred landing spot if moved before deadline

The Sacramento Kings are reportedly considering trades for De’Aaron Fox. But according to the star himself, that isn’t because he has directly requested a trade.

“That’s their decision to make. I can’t tell them not to listen to offers or I can’t tell them to listen to offers,” Fox said Wednesday before the Kings’ game in Philadelphia, according to The Sacramento Bee.

Sacramento’s motivation does not appear to be rooted in a specific directive from Fox. Rather, the Kings are considering a move because of Fox’s reluctance to sign a long-term contract extension. He turned down an extension with the Kings over the summer, and with his 2026 free agency growing closer by the day, his exit is growing likelier ahead of the Feb. 6 trade deadline.

Fox, by all accounts, is focused on competing for championships. To that effect, he reportedly has a favored destination in mind: the San Antonio Spurs. There, he would partner up with ascending center Victor Wembanyama to create one of the best young duos in the Western Conference.

While Fox wouldn’t confirm that he is eyeing the Spurs, he did acknowledge that he has a preference in mind if he were to move.

“For sure, I think everybody has a preferred destination,” Fox said. “I think everybody has a preferred destination if they’re not in the place that — or if they’re not going to be in the place where they are in the moment. I think it’s natural.”

De’Aaron Fox landing spots: Spurs are the favorites, but Rockets, Heat among teams that also make sense

De'Aaron Fox landing spots: Spurs are the favorites, but Rockets, Heat among teams that also make sense

While the Kings control the situation for now, Fox has an uncommon degree of leverage as this situation plays out. The Spurs, barring something unforeseen, will have max cap space in the summer of 2026, so Fox will have the power to walk to San Antonio as a free agent if he so chooses. That is going to limit what other teams are willing to offer, as the possibility of losing Fox for nothing restricts his value. If the rest of the league views him as a rental, the Kings will have no choice but to deal with San Antonio at a price the Spurs dictate.

Still, it is rare for any trade request to come and go smoothly. Damian Lillard more or less told the league not to trade for him because he wanted to go to Miami. He wound up in Milwaukee. Jimmy Butler is doing everything in his power to get to Phoenix right now. The Suns have thus far been unable to complete a deal.

These sagas are complicated and messy. Fox may want to go to San Antonio, but until a deal is reached, other suitors have a chance to steal him away.

In recent weeks, trade rumors surrounding Sacramento Kings’ star point guard De’Aaron Fox have been swirling. And now, Fox himself has admitted that he has a preferred landing spot if he were to be moved before the trade deadline.

According to sources close to Fox, the 24-year-old has expressed interest in joining the New York Knicks. The Knicks have been in need of a dynamic point guard for quite some time, and Fox could be the missing piece to their puzzle.

While the Kings have not publicly stated that they are looking to move Fox, the team’s struggles this season have sparked speculation that they could be open to making changes. Fox, who is averaging 20.6 points and 6.8 assists per game this season, would undoubtedly garner significant interest from teams around the league.

It remains to be seen if the Kings will entertain offers for Fox, or if he will ultimately end up in New York or another team that catches his eye. But one thing is for certain – the trade deadline is shaping up to be an interesting one for De’Aaron Fox and the Kings.

  • Harvey Weinstein begs for rape trial to be moved up, ‘can’t hold on anymore’ amid cancer battle

Harvey Weinstein begged the court to push his trial date forward as he battles cancer.

Judge Curtis J. Farber set Weinstein’s rape retrial for April 15 during Wednesday’s hearing. However, the disgraced entertainment mogul claimed he would not be here in April.

“I’m asking and begging you to switch,” Weinstein told the judge in a rare direct address to the court. “I can’t hold on anymore. I’m holding on because I want justice for myself.”

Weinstein told Judge Farber that he was given the “wrong pills” earlier Wednesday morning but “caught” the mistake at the “right moment.”

“I am begging for you to move your date, so we can proceed with trial as quickly as possible, so I can get out of this hellhole,” he claimed. “There are so many people suffering in Rikers island. They don’t have the same mouthpiece. It’s a medieval situation. This is something that has to be stopped.”

Farber told Weinstein and his lawyers he was trying to resolve and move the trial up, but as of now, April 15 is the date that works.

“Judge Farber demonstrated exceptional responsiveness, and we deeply appreciate his thoughtful consideration of Harvey’s condition and circumstances,” Weinstein’s representative, Juda Engelmayer, told Fox News Digital in a statement. “He is literally batting for his life. We remain confident in a swift and efficient trial process and firmly believe that Harvey will be fully exonerated.”

Weinstein was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in December after receiving an “alarming blood test.” At the time, his rep confirmed the former film producer had been diagnosed with leukemia.

“Mr. Weinstein, who is suffering from a number of illnesses, including leukemia, has been deprived the medical attention that someone in his medical state deserves, prisoner or not. In many ways, this mistreatment constitutes cruel and unusual punishment,” Engelmayer previously told Fox News Digital in a statement.

Weinstein’s team has been adamant about his declining health in recent months, claiming he is “basically getting no treatment” for his various medical issues.

“All I can tell you is he is not getting the treatment he deserves,” Weinstein’s lawyer, Arthur Aidala, said after a court hearing in July. “He needs some relief. We are very confident of the outcome of this trial… he will get acquitted. There is a lot of light at the end of the tunnel for Mr. Weinstein.”

A New York appeals court overturned Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction this past April, ordering a new trial in a stunning reversal of a landmark #MeToo case.

In a 4-3 decision, the court found that Weinstein’s trial judge allowed prosecutors to call women who said Weinstein had assaulted them to testify, even though their accusations did not specifically relate to the entertainment mogul’s charges.

Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison after being convicted in February 2020 of forcing oral sex on TV and film production assistant Mimi Haley in 2006 and third-degree rape of hairstylist Jessica Mann in 2013. He was acquitted of first-degree rape and two counts of predatory sexual assault from actor Annabella Sciorra’s allegations of rape in the 1990s. Weinstein has denied ever engaging in non-consensual sex.

Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced Hollywood producer currently serving a 23-year prison sentence for rape and sexual assault, has reportedly begged for his upcoming rape trial to be moved up due to his deteriorating health.

Weinstein, who is battling cancer, allegedly told his lawyers that he “can’t hold on anymore” and fears that he may not live to see the trial date. The trial, originally scheduled for May 2022, is now set to take place in September of this year.

Weinstein’s legal team has argued that the delay in the trial is causing undue stress and suffering for their client, who is already in poor health. They are pushing for an expedited trial date in order to give Weinstein a chance to defend himself before it’s too late.

However, many critics have pointed out that Weinstein’s health concerns should not take precedence over the need for justice to be served. The numerous allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse against him cannot be ignored, and his health should not be used as a way to delay or manipulate the legal process.

As the trial date approaches, the public will be watching closely to see how the court handles Weinstein’s plea for an expedited trial and whether justice will be served for his victims.

  • The ‘Doomsday Clock’ just moved closer to midnight. Here’s why atomic scientists think humanity is closer than ever to destroying itself.

Humanity is closer to destroying itself, according to atomic scientists who revealed on Tuesday that the famous “Doomsday Clock” was set to 89 seconds to midnight — the closest it has ever been.

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, a science-oriented advocacy group, made the announcement Tuesday morning, metaphorically rating how close humankind is to annihilating itself with human-made advancements.

“We set the clock closer to midnight because we do not see positive progress on the global challenges we face including nuclear risk, climate change, biological threats and advances in disruptive technologies,” Daniel Holz, chair of the Bulletin’s Science and Security Board, said.

Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox

See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.

The group of scientists say the war in Ukraine “could become nuclear at any moment” and a wider regional war in the Middle East could “spiral out of control,” while countries with nuclear weapons are increasing their arsenals. They say the global attempts to reduce climate change “remains poor,” as governments aren’t enacting the necessary policies to halt global warming. The development of biotechnology and artificial intelligence “far outpaced policy, regulation and a thorough understanding of their consequences,” Holz said.

“In setting the clock forward, we send a stark signal. Because the world is perilously close to the precipice, any move toward midnight should be taken as an indication of extreme danger and an unmistakable warning,” Holz added.

Here’s a closer look at how the clock was created and how the time is determined.

    What is the ‘Doomsday Clock’?

It’s a symbolic way of showing the public how close the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists believes the world is to a human-made apocalypse.

Midnight represents Earth’s total annihilation. If the clock moves closer to midnight, it suggests that humanity is nearing self-destruction. It is possible for the clock to move away from midnight, which means that humanity has taken steps within the past year to reduce the risks of the world ending.

“There is hope. We certainly believe that the clock can be moved back and there are many actions that can be taken,” Holz said as he responded to a reporter’s question. “Our concern is that those actions are not being taken.”

“The Doomsday Clock is a design that warns the public about how close we are to destroying our world with dangerous technologies of our own making,” the website says. “It is a metaphor, a reminder of the perils we must address if we are to survive on the planet.”

How did the Doomsday Clock come about?

The timepiece concept dates back to 1947, when nuclear weapons were the greatest danger to humanity, as the U.S. and Russia were headed toward an arms race.

Artist Martyl Langsdorf was commissioned to design a new cover for the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists journal. She was married to Alexander Langsdorf, a physicist who worked on the Manhattan Project, which built the world’s first atomic bombs.

She listened to the scientists who worked on the nuclear bomb, and they stressed the importance of conveying a sense of urgency to the public about the consequences of the new technology. It was then that Langsdorf switched her design from the uranium symbol to a clock to convey there’s not much time to get it under control.

The artist first set the Doomsday Clock to seven minutes until midnight because “it looked good to my eye,” she said.

    How is the time determined?

After the clock concept was established, Bulletin editor Eugene Rabinowitch decided whether or not the clock’s time should be adjusted. As a scientist and a leading voice in the international effort to reduce and eliminate nuclear weapons, he based his decisions on the clock’s time after consulting with other scientists and experts from all over the world.

After Rabinowitch died in 1973, the Bulletin’s governing board took over the responsibility. In 2008, a separate Science and Security Board (SASB) was established and is now entrusted with the task. The SASB is made up of a select group of globally recognized leaders who consult additional experts across a wide range of disciplines. The board weighs the danger of nuclear disaster, and in recent decades has considered threats of climate change and artificial intelligence.

The members weigh the following two questions every year in deciding where the clock should be: Is humanity safer or at greater risk this year than last year? Is humanity safer or at greater risk compared to the 78 years the clock has been set?

The Doomsday Clock of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, set at 89 seconds to midnight, is displayed before a news conference at the United States Institute of Peace, Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo/Mark Schiefelbein)

What was the time set to in recent years?

In January 2023, the Doomsday Clock was set at 90 seconds to midnight, the closest to midnight it has ever been, in large part because of the nuclear threat posed by Russia’s war on Ukraine.

It remained at 90 seconds to midnight in 2024, citing the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel and the war in Gaza, disasters exacerbated by climate change and the danger of artificial intelligence.

When was the clock furthest from midnight?

Dr. Leonard Rieser, Chairman of the Board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, moves the hand of the Doomsday Clock back to 17 minutes before midnight at offices near the University of Chicago on Nov. 26, 1991. (Carl Wagner/Chicago Tribune/Tribune News Service via Getty Images)

In 1991, the Bulletin set the clock hand back to 17 minutes until midnight, gaining seven minutes after the Cold War was officially over. The U.S. and Russia signed the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), agreeing to greatly reduce the number of strategic nuclear weapons.

The ‘Doomsday Clock’ just moved closer to midnight. Here’s why atomic scientists think humanity is closer than ever to destroying itself.

The Doomsday Clock, a symbolic representation of how close humanity is to global catastrophe, was recently moved to 100 seconds to midnight by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. This is the closest it has ever been to midnight since its creation in 1947.

The decision to move the clock closer to midnight was based on a number of factors, including the continued threat of nuclear war, the growing risks of climate change, and the rise of disinformation and misinformation in the digital age.

One of the main reasons for the move is the increased tensions between nuclear-armed states, particularly the United States and Russia. The collapse of arms control agreements and the development of new, more powerful nuclear weapons have raised fears of a potential nuclear conflict that could have devastating consequences for humanity.

In addition, the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly severe, with rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and loss of biodiversity posing a significant threat to global stability. The failure of world leaders to take meaningful action to address these issues has only added to the sense of urgency.

Furthermore, the spread of misinformation and disinformation in the digital age has made it increasingly difficult to distinguish fact from fiction, leading to confusion and mistrust among the public. This has undermined efforts to address critical issues such as climate change and nuclear proliferation.

Overall, the decision to move the Doomsday Clock closer to midnight serves as a stark reminder of the precarious state of our world and the urgent need for action to prevent global catastrophe. It is imperative that world leaders come together to address these pressing issues and work towards a more peaceful and sustainable future for all.

  • Is There a Silver Lining to THE BATMAN: PART II Being Moved to 2027?

    December 27, 2024 — a date which will live in…infamy?

    Well, maybe for Batman fans.

That was the day it was announced that Matt Reeves’ THE BATMAN: PART II was being pushed back a full year (again) and would now be released on October 1, 2027.  And I, like a lot of folks, was utterly disappointed… angry, even.  Of course, my mind thought of the worst: THE BATMAN: PART 2 will never happen because James Gunn is screwing over Matt Reeves so he can have his DCU Batman, dammit!

After ranting and carrying on, I did what I should’ve done first: Ask some folks who know more than me.

So I did…and discovered that my overreaction was exactly that: An overreaction.  There are legit reasons why the film’s release date was moved to 2027.  For one thing, the WGA/SAG strikes adversely affected the script’s progress.  Secondly, it’s said that Matt Reeves is a meticulous perfectionist and will not turn a script in as “ready” until he’s 100% satisfied with it.  Finally, there appears to have been something personal/on the homefront that kept Reeves from totally focusing on THE BATMAN: PART II for much of last year (2024).  If that is the case (and Reeves has said twice publicly that he had “a lot going on this past year”), then the delay is completely understandable.

Frankly, all the reasons previously listed are understandable.  Is it a bummer that we have a longer wait (again) for the film? Absolutely.  Is it the end of the world as we know it?  Absolutely not.  In fact, it may be a positive, so let me enlighten y’all with the silver lining…

We’ve had a LOT of Batman on film over the last 13 years.  Starting with THE DARK KNIGHT RISES in 2012 (which ended Christopher Nolan’s THE DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY), we’ve had appearances of Batman in 6 films (RISES, BATMAN v SUPERMAN, SUICIDE SQUAD, JUSTICE LEAGUE, THE BATMAN, THE FLASH) played by 5 different actors (Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, Robert Pattinson, Michael Keaton, George Clooney).

As I said, that’s a lot of Batman on film in a relatively short time. So, wouldn’t it be wise to have a bit of Batman on film break?  You know, get the audience to miss him again?

The answer to that is yes.

As I said, I know it’s disappointing that we must wait 5 years between THE BATMAN and its sequel, which will be the longest time between Batman films in the same series; it bests the time between THE DARK KNIGHT and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES by a year-plus. On the other hand, when it comes to the solo Batman film franchise beginning in 1989, it’s a shorter time than between BATMAN & ROBIN to BATMAN BEGINS (8 years) and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES to THE BATMAN (10 years).

We must remember that we were recently treated to over 8 hours of SAGA content with THE PENGUIN on HBO — a quasi-sequel to THE BATMAN.  Furthermore, we’ll likely get a second season of THE PENGUIN and perhaps another HBO series that’s part of the SAGA before THE BATMAN: PART II.  Thus, by the time PART II gets here, we will have gotten the most in-continuity content of any incarnation of Batman on film (including TV/HBO, of course).  Hell, the SAGA has already done that with the original film and the first HBO/TV spinoff!

The bottom line is that this isn’t about the fans.  The mindset for a lot of us is the more Batman the better.  But frankly, THE BATMAN: PART II isn’t being made for fans; it’s for the general audience and they will determine if the film is a box office success. With so much cinematic Batman and Batmen (Batmans?) over the last several years, it’ll do them some good to miss the old boy.

And it’ll be good for fans too…even if they don’t realize it. – Bill “Jett” Ramey

As disappointing as it may be for fans to hear that “The Batman: Part II” has been pushed back to 2027, there may actually be a silver lining to this delay.

One possible benefit of the extended wait is that it allows more time for the filmmakers to perfect the script, visual effects, and overall production of the film. With the extra time, the creative team behind the movie can ensure that it lives up to the high expectations set by the first installment.

Additionally, the delay may also give fans more time to rewatch the first movie, dive deeper into the lore of Batman, and speculate about what could happen in the sequel. This extended anticipation could ultimately make the release of “The Batman: Part II” even more exciting when it finally hits theaters.

While waiting for the movie may be tough, it’s important to remember that good things come to those who wait. So, let’s remain patient and hopeful that “The Batman: Part II” will be worth the delay in the end.

  • Incarcerated firefighters battling Southern California wildfires moved by outpouring support from the public

PASADENA, Calif. (KABC) — Hundreds of the firefighters working tirelessly on the fire lines to protect lives and property in Southern California are actually serving time in prison.

As two historic wildfires raged in Southern California, Joseph McKinney and Sal Almanza were among the firefighters who rushed to help.

“Physically, it’s pretty demanding. There’s a lot of hiking, and it’s in a rough terrain,” incarcerated firefighter Joseph McKinney said.

“We often go where bulldozers and other vehicles cannot go,” Sal Almanza, who is serving a 4-year sentence at the minimum-security Fenner Canyon Conservation Camp, said.

The Visalia natives are two of California’s more than 1,000 incarcerated firefighters responding to this emergency. They are part of a state program for incarcerated men and women.

“I knew that the firefighting program was going to be the fastest avenue for me to get home to my son, so I knew that’s what I wanted to do. Firefighting has actually always been a passion of mine,” Almanza said.

Most who are eligible and choose to join can qualify for sentence reductions. They can get up to two days off their sentences for every day on a fire crew. They earn up to roughly $10 a day, plus an extra dollar during emergencies.

What to know about incarcerated firefighters working the L.A. area blazes

McKinney says he’s worked as long as 24 hours.

“It was a lot, but, you know, they keep the water coming. They keep food coming, and you know, you feed off the energy of the other guys,” McKinney said.

“We’re all proud of you, and also, we’re going to try to fight to get y’all paid,” California State Assemblymember Isaac Bryan said.

Bryan and other government officials met with some of the incarcerated firefighters at their base camp in Pasadena. The firefighters came from more than 30 camps across the state.

Bryan just introduced legislation to increase their pay.

“What AB 247 says is that if you are incarcerated, and you are actively fighting a wildfire, you are on the front line. You are on the fire line doing that lifesaving work. You should be compensated at the same rate as the lowest-paid person who is not incarcerated,” Bryan said.

McKinney and Almanza have been moved by the outpouring of support from the public.

“It just feels like sometimes you’re tucked away, you know, and no one gets to share. You don’t get to share those experiences with nobody. So when the community comes out and shows the love and the outpouring, it just really feels good; you know, it feels like someone cares and someone knows what you’re doing,” Almanza said.

One of the organizations that has advocated with and for these firefighters is the Anti-Recidivism Coalition. They helped write a bill to expunge their records.

The organization also helps run a firefighter training and reentry program that creates a pathway for a career upon release.

“I have about two years left on my sentence. By the time that it’s over, I should be pretty dialed in and know what I’m doing, so I’m excited to pursue that,” McKinney said.

The brave men and women who are currently serving on the frontlines of the wildfires raging through Southern California are not your average firefighters. These individuals are incarcerated, fighting the blazes as part of the state’s inmate firefighter program.

Despite their circumstances, these incarcerated firefighters have shown incredible courage and dedication in battling the flames and protecting communities. And now, they are being moved by the outpouring of support they have received from the public.

From messages of gratitude and encouragement to donations of supplies, the public’s support has not gone unnoticed by these firefighters. Many of them have expressed their gratitude for the support, saying that it gives them the motivation to keep pushing through the grueling conditions they face on a daily basis.

It’s a powerful reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is still kindness and compassion in the world. These firefighters may be behind bars, but their efforts and sacrifices are not going unnoticed.

As the wildfires continue to rage on, let’s continue to show our support for these incarcerated firefighters and all of the brave individuals fighting to protect our communities. Together, we can make a difference and help these heroes in their time of need.

  • CCPS calendar changes due to inclement weather closures, last student/teacher days moved | details

CCPS calendar changes due to inclement weather closures, last student/teacher days moved

For the 2024-2025 school year, Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) identified in its calendar four possible inclement weather make-up dates in June 2025. As of Jan. 15, the school system has used three inclement weather school closure days.

The last day of school for students for the 2024-25 school year now moves to Friday, June 13. The last day for teachers moves to Monday, June 16.

CCPS still has one identified inclement weather make-up date in June 2025 for students: Monday, June 16. Charles County could still encounter inclement weather this winter and into the spring months.

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), as well as state law, requires students to attend school for 180 days. Friday, June 13, is day 180 for students.

The early dismissal schedule identified in the calendar now shifts as follows.

    • Wednesday, June 11, two-hour early dismissal for students.
    • Thursday, June 12, two-hour early dismissal for students.
    • Friday, June 13, two-hour early dismissal, last day of school for students.

June 6, 9 and 10 will now be full days of school for students. Please make a note of the changes to print copies of the 2024-2025 Parent Handbook/Calendar students and staff received during the first week of school.

The online CCPS calendar at www.ccboe.com has been updated to reflect these changes. MSDE has also extended some winter Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) windows for school systems due to statewide school closures.

CCPS has requested a waiver to MSDE of one inclement weather snow date, since Gov. Wes Moore declared Monday, Jan. 6, as a state of emergency. This would again change the last day of school for students and teachers; however, the waiver could be denied, or a response delayed. MSDE requires school systems to demonstrate use of its identified inclement weather make-up days when considering waiver requests.

Any additional calendar changes will be shared with parents, staff, teachers and the community on the CCPS website at www.ccboe.com.

CCPS Calendar Changes: Last Student/Teacher Days Moved Due to Inclement Weather Closures

Due to the recent inclement weather closures, the Chesterfield County Public Schools (CCPS) calendar has undergone some changes. The last student and teacher days have been moved to accommodate the missed instructional time.

The original last day for students was scheduled for June 10th, but will now be extended to June 15th. Similarly, the last day for teachers was set for June 11th, but will now be June 16th.

These changes were necessary to ensure that students receive the required amount of instructional time and to make up for the days missed due to the weather-related closures. The decision was made in the best interest of the students and their academic success.

We appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we navigate these changes. Please stay tuned for any further updates or adjustments to the CCPS calendar. Thank you for your continued support of our schools and our students.

Wednesday’s game between the New Orleans Pelicans and Milwaukee Bucks at Smoothie King Center has been postponed, the NBA announced.

The game will be rescheduled at a later date.

An historic Gulf Coast winter storm hit the area on Tuesday causing record-breaking snowfall and extremely cold conditions. Nine fatalities have been reported. New Orleans received eight inches of snow, breaking the record set in 1963 of 2.7 inches.

This is the second NBA game this month that had to be postponed due to extreme winter conditions. The Rockets-Hawks game on Jan. 11 was called off due to weather in the Atlanta area.

Both the Pelicans and Bucks entered Wednesday on four-game winning streaks, but in very different places in the NBA standings as we approach the Feb. 6 trade deadline. New Orleans is 12-32 and 14th in the Western Conference, while Milwaukee sits fourth in the East at 24-17.

Winter Storm Enzo isn’t just affecting the NBA.

A big matchup in women’s college basketball has been moved back a day due to the Gulf Coast storm. The No. 2 South Carolina Gamecocks were set to host No. 5 LSU on Thursday, but due to travel issues for the Tigers the game will now tip off Friday night at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C.

LSU’s home game Sunday afternoon against Texas A&M remains on, according to the school.

Due to Winter Storm Enzo wreaking havoc in the South, the NBA game between the Milwaukee Bucks and New Orleans Pelicans has been postponed. Additionally, the college basketball game between LSU and South Carolina has been rescheduled to Friday to ensure the safety of players and fans. Stay safe and warm during this winter storm! #WinterStormEnzo #PostponedGames #SafetyFirst.
