NBA trade deadline live updates: Latest Jimmy Butler rumors as Heat, Suns, others look to make moves
Age: 31
Position: Guard
Contract Value: 50.2M
Expiration: 2027 (player option)
Beal is still a valuable basketball player, but he just happens to be paid an exceptional amount of money for a player who is no longer an All-Star. He makes $50.2 million this season and has two years, $111 million locked beyond this season. I asked five executives, “What would Beal get in free agency if he were available in free agency this summer?” The answers ranged from $25 million to $35 million per year. Count this one as another win for Mark Bartelstein and Priority Sports, an agency with a long track record of getting clients paid handsomely.
Three other factors beyond that make trading Beal incredibly complicated. First, he has a no-trade clause, meaning he can reject any deal he’s presented with if it doesn’t suit him. Second, the Suns are over the second apron by a significant margin, which means the Suns can’t aggregate players in a deal along with Beal to make his contract more palatable. Finally, the team has limited draft capital to trade.
But the Suns would like to shake up their roster in a big way, and Beal is the only mechanism outside of Kevin Durant and Devin Booker that would allow them to make a move for Jimmy Butler. However, to get Butler, the Suns would need to find a third team that would be willing to take Beal, as the Heat are believed to have no interest in taking Beal’s contract back for Butler. The Suns have shifted Beal to the bench, and he hasn’t played poorly in a vacuum this season, averaging 17.1 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists while shooting 48.5 percent from the field and 38.6 percent from 3. He’s also shown increased attention to detail and effort on defense. However, he’s a bit small for this roster, and it’s hard to create lineups that are successful with him, Durant, Booker and another guard. It would probably behoove the Suns to be able to move on from Beal, but it’s going to be hard to find a landing spot for him, even in a deal for Butler.
As the NBA trade deadline approaches, teams around the league are scrambling to make last-minute deals to improve their rosters. One of the biggest names on the trade block is Jimmy Butler of the Miami Heat, and there are several rumors swirling about potential destinations for the star forward.According to reports, the Phoenix Suns are among the teams interested in acquiring Butler, with the hope of pairing him with their young core of Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton. The Suns are said to be offering a package of young players and draft picks in exchange for Butler, but it remains to be seen if the Heat will be willing to part ways with their star player.
Other teams rumored to be in the mix for Butler include the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers, and Los Angeles Clippers. All of these teams are looking to make a push for the playoffs, and adding a player of Butler’s caliber could be a game-changer for their respective rosters.
As the trade deadline approaches, be sure to stay tuned for live updates on the latest Jimmy Butler rumors and potential trades involving the Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, and other teams in the hunt for the star forward. The NBA trade deadline is always full of surprises, and this year looks to be no different. Capitals, Senators among Eastern Conference teams who should make big moves ahead of NHL Trade Deadline
As the March 7 NHL trade deadline approaches, teams with a chance at hoisting Lord Stanley or simply punching their ticket to the dance could be among the most active when it comes to reinforcing their rosters.
On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Matt Larkin and Tyler Yaremchuk highlighted the Washington Capitals and Ottawa Senators as two clubs that should look to go all-in prior to the playoffs.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Let’s move along to the East where I did have a longer list of teams that check both boxes of my criteria. I had Washington. This is the last year they have those two goalies on bargain contracts. If you’re only spending $2.5 million on your goaltending, and you have a ton of draft picks and assets, which they do, Washington should recognize what is in front of them and add to this team. Carolina has clear needs and the ability to go and address them. New Jersey, I have them in the same boat. We know what they need and they have a clear surplus on the right side of their blue line. In a complicated trade market, to have an NHL-ready surplus at such an important position, you can do damage. And then I had Ottawa. And you had Ottawa too. I love that we both have them here. They are not a Stanley Cup contender and not a traditional all-in team in the sense of going to get those finishing pieces, but you have an opportunity to make the playoffs. You need to, if you’re Steve Staios, show this young core that you are serious about competing.
Matt Larkin: I’m with you. To address Ottawa first, you have to show your young core what’s it like to play in the playoffs. Brady Tkachuk, Jake Sanderson, Drake Batherson, none of these guys have seen a single playoff game. You can’t be seven years into Brady Tkachuk’s career with no playoff games. It’s a crime for the fans too. This guy is built for wars in the playoffs, and to not have him out there, I just hate that we haven’t gotten to witness ‘Playoff Brady Tkachuk’, and you have to take your shot. It was 2017, that double overtime loss to Pittsburgh and one goal away from the Stanley Cup Final, this team has not been back since then, so Ottawa, you have to take your swing. I’m with you on Washington. I do think they should be a little more cautious, at least with their current prospects. They are kind of reloading on the fly. They’re competitive, but guys like Ryan Leonard and Andrew Cristall, this team is getting good, but in terms of the pipeline, I don’t think you want to give those guys away, but maybe picks.
You can watch the full segment and the rest of the episode here:
As the NHL Trade Deadline approaches, several Eastern Conference teams are in need of making big moves in order to improve their chances of making a deep playoff run. Two teams that stand out as needing to make significant upgrades are the Washington Capitals and the Ottawa Senators. The Capitals, who currently sit atop the Metropolitan Division, are in a prime position to make a push for the Stanley Cup. However, with strong competition from teams like the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers, the Capitals need to bolster their lineup in order to solidify their chances. Adding a top-six forward or a veteran defenseman could provide the extra depth needed to make a serious run at the Cup.
On the other hand, the Senators find themselves in a more precarious position. Currently sitting near the bottom of the Atlantic Division, the Senators need to make some bold moves in order to climb back into playoff contention. Acquiring a top-line forward or a reliable goaltender could give the Senators the boost they need to turn their season around.
Both the Capitals and Senators have the potential to make significant moves ahead of the Trade Deadline, and doing so could greatly impact their chances of success in the postseason. It will be interesting to see what moves these teams make in the coming weeks as they look to improve their rosters and make a push towards the Stanley Cup.

The Southeastern Conference has postponed Thursday night’s women’s basketball game between No. 5 LSU and No. 2 South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina, until Friday because of winter weather.
The SEC said Friday’s game would tip off at 5 p.m. ET. LSU athletics officials were confident the women’s basketball team would be able to fly out of Baton Rouge on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Sun Belt Conference cited “hazardous travel conditions” in rescheduling four men’s basketball games.
Georgia Southern‘s home game against Coastal Carolina, and Louisiana-Lafayette‘s home game against Texas State were moved from Wednesday to Thursday. Two games originally scheduled for Thursday — Southern Miss at Troy and South Alabama at Louisiana-Monroe — both were moved to Monday.
The decision comes a day after a winter storm dropped about a foot of snow in parts of south Louisiana and made travel hazardous in subtropical communities that possess little in the way of snow-clearing equipment for roads and airports.
LSU spokesman Michael Bonnette said highways in and around Baton Rouge remained closed Wednesday, and that classes at LSU have been canceled through Thursday.
The Tigers’ home game on Sunday evening against Texas A&M remains on schedule.
After breaking snow records in Texas and Louisiana on Tuesday, the storm continued to spread heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain across parts of the Florida Panhandle, Georgia and the coastal Carolinas on Wednesday.
South Carolina (18-1, 6-0 SEC) is coming off a 101-60 victory over Oklahoma on Sunday.
LSU (20-0, 5-0 SEC) is off to one of the best starts in program history and is coming off an 80-63 victory at Florida on Sunday. The 2022-23 national championship team currently owns the best start in program history at 23-0. That team’s first loss came at South Carolina.
In a surprising turn of events, the SEC has announced that the highly anticipated matchup between No. 5 LSU and No. 2 South Carolina has been moved to Friday night due to impending severe weather conditions.College football fans across the nation were eagerly awaiting this showdown between two powerhouse programs, but the safety of the players and fans must always come first. With severe thunderstorms and potential lightning strikes in the forecast, the SEC made the decision to move the game up a day in order to avoid any potential risks.
This unexpected schedule change has left fans scrambling to rearrange their plans, but ultimately, the safety of everyone involved is paramount. So mark your calendars for Friday night, as LSU and South Carolina are set to face off in what promises to be an electrifying matchup under the lights. Stay tuned for updates and stay safe, football fans! #LSUvsSC #SECfootball #weatheralert

First on NewscastStudio: CBS News has moved up Norah O’Donnell’s last day on the “CBS Evening News” due to golf coverage.
Originally, O’Donnell’s last day on the “Evening News” was slated for Jan. 24, 2025. However, due to CBS coverage of the Farmers Insurance Open, the newscast will not air nationally Jan. 24, so the network has moved up her final broadcast to Jan. 23, 2025, a network spokesperson confirmed to NewscastStudio.
O’Donnell has anchored the broadcast since 2019. In July 2024, the network announced she would step down from anchor as the broadcast in 2025 and shift to becoming a correspondent for the network.
The network is planning to re-launch the broadcast Jan. 27, 2025, with an ensemble format featuring John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois along with Margaret Brennan anchoring political news coverage from Washington, D.C. As part of the overhaul, the broadcast will move its production operations back to New York City.
CBS had opted to move the permanent studio for “Evening” to Washington, D.C., when O’Donnell became anchor. O’Donnell’s family lives in the Washington, D.C., area.

$1 Million Transfer
Chelsea finalizing deal for USWNT’s Naomi Girma
We have long known that U.S. women’s national team defender Naomi Girma is invaluable.
She has led the San Diego Wave and the U.S. in her stalwart center back role. She has an NCAA championship title, an NWSL Shield, two Defender of the Year awards and an Olympic gold medal.
USWNT head coach Emma Hayes has called her the “best defender” she’s seen. “Ever.”
And now Chelsea Women are putting down a record-breaking investment to bring Girma to their team: a $1.1 million transfer fee, as Meg reported earlier today. The Women’s Super League side has agreed to terms with San Diego, where Girma is under contract until 2026, but her new contract with Chelsea is not yet finalized.
Chelsea previously held the transfer record in 2024 when they signed Colombian striker Mayra Ramirez for more than half a million dollars from Levante in Liga F. That record stood for all of a couple of weeks before Bay FC nearly doubled the price tag, signing Racheal Kundananji and sending a $862,000 transfer fee to Madrid CFF.
Girma was a significant factor for the U.S. in its quest for Olympic gold last summer. But before that, she was the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NWSL Draft, earning Rookie of the Year and her first Defender of the Year title in her first season.
Chelsea weren’t the only ones chasing the 24-year-old. Current French leaders Lyon were also courting Girma and offered upward of $1 million to San Diego.
What makes a million-dollar defender?
Strikers are measured by their goals, creative midfielders by their assists. Goalkeepers can point to saves and shutouts.
Even with the advancement of metrics like expected goals, expected assists and expected goals prevented, the work of a world-class defender has been far more elusive to illustrate with numbers.
So how do you quantify a talent like Girma, who was one of the few bright spots in a forgettable World Cup for the U.S. and again in 2024 despite the San Diego Wave’s form?
Stats like tackles and interceptions (and saves, for goalkeepers) are more indicative of a team under constant duress than individual quality. But Girma is hard to bypass.
- She’s very successful when she attempts a tackle.
- She’s crafty with a toe poke.
- While her overall passing is stellar — 90.3% accuracy, third-best in the sample — it’s her ability to break lines accurately that’ll make her coveted by clubs of the highest standard.
Throw in her captain’s mentality and affable personality, and it’s no wonder that Girma is Option A for any Champions League contender needing to upgrade in the back.
Meg’s Corner
Girma’s record transfer fee should shock no one
We always knew the $1 million barrier would be broken for women’s football transfer fees sooner rather than later — but you also really shouldn’t be surprised that it’s Naomi Girma setting the record either. Girma’s followed in the footsteps of center backs and leaders before her, like Carla Overbeck and Becky Sauerbrunn, but she’s also shaping the present and future of women’s football on the field and with this transfer fee.
I think it’s worth it to take a beat and contextualize the $1.1 million fee amid the state of transfers across global soccer. While FIFA has yet to release its report for 2024, we can at least look at the mid-year report from last year’s summer window.
- $6.4 billion spent on transfer fees in men’s professional soccer.
- $6.8 million spent on international transfers in the women’s game. (I’d say “only,” but that’s more than double what was spent in the 2023 mid-year window. Progress!)
Girma’s transfer fee from Chelsea would have been good for about 16% of that window’s total alone — and it’s safe to assume that with this new benchmark, there will be continued exponential growth for international transfers.
NWSL teams have been major players in this market, from Bay FC making their move for Kundananji to Orlando Pride adding NWSL Championship MVP Barbra Banda, but it also still benefits the NWSL that multiple European teams were ready to pony up a cool mil for an American star.
The latest from the “Full Time” podcast: New Canada women’s coach Casey Stoney shares her vision for the team.

Moves I like
This NWSL offseason marks a new era.
As of last Wednesday, teams can no longer trade players without their consent under the new CBA — negotiated for and ratified by the league, players and clubs last year. Gone are the days of trade windows, rookie drafts and restricted free agency. Deals can happen at any point until October’s roster freeze deadline.
U.S. emerging talent Jaedyn Shaw took full advantage of the rule, completing a trade from the Wave to the North Carolina Courage last week — though she had requested a move (specifically to North Carolina) more than a year ago.
The rule changes have led to quite the active offseason, which calls for another edition of Jeff Rueter’s “Moves I like”:
- Shaw to Courage: Shaw clearly sees a role she can own in Sean Nahas’ side. Along with Ashley Sanchez, the pair could be a lethal two-headed creative machine, each capable of taking their shots. She’ll be a welcome addition to a team that just lost former league MVP Kerolin in free agency.
- Yazmeen Ryan to Houston Dash: Players with Ryan’s versatility and consistency are in short supply, and having her on a fresh contract bodes well for the Dash’s long-overdue rebuild. I also like that Houston has brought Delanie Sheehan in from free agency, ensuring Ryan’s acclimation is sped up thanks to the pair’s familiarity from their time at Gotham.
- Honorable mention: Angel City re-signed two-time World Cup winner Christen Press to a one-year contract extension. The 36-year-old was Angel City’s first-ever signing on its inaugural roster in 2021. The team also recently hired former NWSL head coach Mark Parsons as its general manager.
Naeher wins another award
We are not done celebrating Alyssa Naeher — even if she retired from international soccer in November.
On Saturday, U.S. Soccer named the former women’s national team goalkeeper its Female Player of the Year for 2024. It’s hard to argue with the accolades from her very successful year:
- Olympic gold medal
- CONCACAF W Gold Cup inaugural champion (saving and taking a penalty kick)
- SheBelieves Cup winner
- The Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award
The 36-year-old earned her latest nod thanks to a vote from national team coaches, players, U.S. Soccer board members, the U.S. Soccer Athletes’ Council, NWSL head coaches, fans and select media members and administrators.
Full Time First Looks
Parting message: Former Arsenal and Bay FC defender Jen Beattie is retiring, the 33-year-old announced today. Beattie reflected on her career as she enters a new phase of life, including her World Cup goal at Parc des Princes, sharing her cancer diagnosis in 2020 and the impact of her father’s legacy on her life.
Messy Manchester: Rivalries — at their best — come with intense competition and a bit of chaos. Sunday’s Manchester derby in the WSL was no exception. United leapfrogged City into third place in the standings with a 4-2 victory. The two fierce competitors will meet again tomorrow in the Women’s League Cup. The only question is which side Chloe Kelly will be on amid reports the City forward could be headed to United on a loan.
Staying on: Arsenal has opted for consistency amid change, hiring Renee Slegers as its head coach through the 2025-26 season. Slegers, 35, stepped into the interim role in October, following Jonas Eidevall’s resignation. The Athletic’s Art de Roche explains why Slegers’ ruthlessness made her the perfect choice.
Cease and desist: Liverpool striker Olivia Smith has become the player defenders feel they need to foul to stop. So much so, head coach Matt Beard has made formal pleas to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited to review and protect the 20-year-old Canadian international from “serious injury.”

Girma deal marks women’s soccer’s first $1 million transfer. Plus, recent NWSL moves we likeIn a groundbreaking move for women’s soccer, defender Naomi Girma has become the first player in the sport’s history to be involved in a $1 million transfer deal. The 21-year-old recently signed with French club Olympique Lyonnais, setting a new standard for the value of female players in the market.
Girma, who previously played for Stanford University and the United States U-20 national team, has been heralded as one of the top young talents in the game. Her move to Lyon not only showcases her talent and potential, but also highlights the growing recognition and investment in women’s soccer worldwide.
In addition to Girma’s historic transfer, there have been several recent moves in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) that we are excited about. From international stars joining the league to promising young talents making their mark, here are a few transfers and signings that have caught our eye:
1. Angelina – The Brazilian midfielder has signed with OL Reign, bringing her creativity and skill to the NWSL.
2. Sam Mewis – The USWNT star has returned to the NWSL with San Diego Wave FC after a successful stint in Europe.
3. Trinity Rodman – The youngest player ever drafted into the NWSL, Rodman has already made a name for herself with the Washington Spirit.
These moves, along with Girma’s groundbreaking transfer, are a testament to the growing strength and visibility of women’s soccer. As the sport continues to evolve and thrive, we look forward to seeing more historic deals and talented players making their mark on the global stage.
