  • Lions take first steps in offseason roster moves with futures contracts

Several hours after head coach Dan Campbell held his media availability, the Detroit Lions began their offseason roster moves with the intention of keeping a few familiar faces around a bit longer.

The Lions announced that Abraham Beauplan (LB), Tom Kennedy (WR), Chris Smith (DT), Kingsley Eguakun (C), DaRon Gilbert (LB), Erick Hallett (S), Jamarco Jones (OT), Stantley Thomas-Oliver (CB), Issac Ukwu (DE), and Loren Strickland (S) had all signed futures contracts.

The deals do not count against the team’s salary cap or roster total until the start of the new league year. These contracts also prohibit the players from negotiating with other teams.

Beauplan, who signed with the Lions last August, spent time moving between the practice squad and active roster this season. He appeared in Weeks 8, 9 and 15, with all his snaps coming on special teams.

Kennedy, with the Lions since 2019, suited up for four games this season, seeing one target in Week 16 against the Chicago Bears.

Smith, a Detroit native, played in five games, recording two tackles and one quarterback hit.

Jones, signed by the Lions after his release from the Tennessee Titans, logged four snaps this season — one in Week 10 against the Houston Texans and three during the Thanksgiving game against the Bears.

Ukwu appeared in two games this season, including a start in Week 7 against the Minnesota Vikings. He finished the year with three tackles.

Strickland played in seven games for Detroit, with all his snaps coming on special teams.

Thomas-Oliver appeared during the Lions’ Week 18 win over the Vikings, logging five snaps on special teams. He also saw two snaps on special teams during their divisional-round loss to the Washington Commanders on Saturday.

Eguakun, Gilbert, and Hallett did not log any playing time for the Lions this past season.

The Detroit Lions have started making moves to shape their roster for the upcoming season by signing several players to futures contracts. These contracts allow teams to secure players for the offseason and give them a chance to compete for a spot on the roster during training camp.

Among the players signed by the Lions are quarterback David Blough, wide receiver Victor Bolden, defensive tackle Kevin Strong, and cornerback Alex Myres. These signings give the Lions some depth at key positions and provide opportunities for these players to make an impact in the upcoming season.

These futures contracts are just the beginning of what promises to be a busy offseason for the Lions as they look to build a competitive roster for the 2021 season. Stay tuned for more updates as the team continues to make moves in the coming months.

  • Celtics Notes: Porzingis, Starting Lineup, Roster Moves, Mazzulla

After scoring 23 points in 23 minutes on Friday, Celtics big man Kristaps Porzingis expressed hope that he might be available for tonight’s game against Atlanta, writes Brian Robb of MassLive. Porzingis is officially listed as questionable, but if he’s able to take the court, it would mark his first back-to-back since returning from offseason surgery.

“I believe so,” Porzingis responded when asked if he felt he could be ready. “But that’s a little bit out of my hands. I think tomorrow we’ll know more information.”

Robb notes that Al Horford won’t be available because he also played in Friday’s game, and the Celtics haven’t used him on both nights of a back-to-back over the past two years. The final decision on Porzingis will be made by the medical staff, and Robb points out that Boston is in the midst of playing five games in seven days, so there are reasons to exercise caution.

Porzingis has played in seven straight contests since returning from an ankle injury, and he has topped 20 points in three of his last five games.

    There’s more from Boston:

    • Friday marked a vintage performance for the Celtics’ starters, who were considered one of the best five-man units in the league last season, Robb states in a separate story. Limited by Porzingis’ absence early on, the group had been together for just 10 games before Friday and had a -11.8 net rating in 147 minutes. They looked back to normal in the victory over Orlando, outscoring the Magic by 15 points in their 20 minutes on the court together. “Results can vary with plus/minus and things like that,” Jayson Tatum said. “But I think just how connected we were on both ends of the floor, especially on defense. Everybody was on the same page, we were connected, helping each other out. So regardless of the plus/minus, the way we went about it was a lot better today.”
    • The Celtics emphasized continuity in the offseason, bringing back virtually the same roster than won the title in 2024, but a small trade may be necessary to shake things up, Robb adds in a mailbag column. He also suggests it might be time to reduce the minutes for starting guards Jrue Holiday and Derrick White in light of their recent struggles.
    • Coming off Wednesday’s embarrassing loss at Toronto, coach Joe Mazzulla encouraged his players to embrace the challenges that the NBA can present, according to Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe. The team has been surprisingly average over the past month or so, and Porzingis said it lacked spirit and energy in the 13-point defeat against the lowly Raptors. “To me, this is the fun part of why you enter the arena,” Mazzulla said. “Anyone who is not in the arena, they don’t have a skin in the game. You enjoy it and it’s fun. This is why you do what you do. This is why you play for the Celtics. This is why you play in the NBA. This is why you go after something that’s extremely hard to do is for the challenge of it. And to have an expectation of it being anything other than challenging is the wrong way to attack. … You can’t only enjoy things when they go your way. That’s called being spoiled.”

The Boston Celtics have been making some waves recently, with various news and rumors swirling around the team. Here are some Celtics notes to keep you up to date:

    1. Porzingis Trade Rumors: There have been rumblings that the Celtics are interested in trading for Dallas Mavericks star Kristaps Porzingis. The 7-foot-3 Latvian has been a force to be reckoned with on both ends of the court, and his addition would undoubtedly bolster the Celtics’ frontcourt. Keep an eye on this developing story.

    2. Starting Lineup Changes: Head coach Ime Udoka has been tinkering with the starting lineup in recent games, trying to find the right combination of players to spark the team. Whether it’s inserting a new player into the starting five or switching up positions, Udoka is looking for ways to jumpstart the Celtics’ season.

    3. Roster Moves: The Celtics have been active on the trade market, exploring potential deals to improve the team’s depth and talent. With the trade deadline approaching, expect to see more moves from Boston as they look to solidify their roster for a playoff push.

    4. Mazzulla’s Impact: Rookie guard Joe Mazzulla has been turning heads with his impressive play off the bench. The undrafted free agent out of West Virginia has provided energy and hustle on both ends of the court, earning praise from his teammates and coaches. Mazzulla’s emergence as a key contributor could be a game-changer for the Celtics as they look to make a deep postseason run.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Boston Celtics as they navigate through the rest of the season. #CelticsNation #GreenRunsDeep

  • Auburn now unanimous No. 1; Duke moves to No. 2

A wild week of upsets and court stormings led to a massive shake-up in the AP Top 25.

    One constant: Auburn.

The Tigers were the unanimous pick at No. 1 in the Associated Press men’s college basketball poll released Monday, holding on to the top spot following a week in which 19 ranked teams lost at least once — including seven teams in the top 10.

Auburn claimed the program’s second No. 1 ranking last week and won both its games despite playing without injured big man Johni Broome. The Tigers rolled over No. 14 Mississippi State 88-66 and survived a late comeback to beat then-No. 19 Georgia 70-68.

No. 2 Duke moved up a spot after winning both of its games last week and swapped places with No. 3 Iowa State, which blew out No. 12 Kansas but lost to No. 23 West Virginia. Alabama and Florida rounded out the top five despite each losing a game last week.

Only three teams — Alabama, Florida and No. 6 Tennessee — held the same spot from a week ago. The chaotic week allowed No. 8 Michigan State to move into the top 10 for the first time this season and No. 22 Missouri into the poll for the first time since 2022-23.

    Louisville’s climb

Louisville has made quite a turnaround under first-year coach Pat Kelsey.

The Cardinals won a combined 12 games the previous two seasons, but are playing some of their best basketball in years. Following a three-game skid, Louisville has won eight straight to move into the poll for the first time in four years at No. 25. Last week, the Cardinals won at Syracuse for the first time in eight years and capped the week by sweeping Virginia for the first time since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2013.

    Rising Red Storm

No. 20 St. John’s moved back into the poll this week and has its highest ranking since reaching No. 15 on Dec. 29, 2014, under coach Steve Lavin. The Red Storm, in their second season under Rick Pitino, moved into first place in the Big East with their win over Seton Hall and Marquette’s loss to Xavier. They haven’t won a share of the Big East regular-season title since 1992.

St. John’s (16-3) is off to its best start through 19 games since opening 17-2 (ultimately 20-2) in 1985-86. And the Johnnies are 7-1 in Big East play for the first time since opening 8-1 in 1998-99.

    Rising and falling

No. 11 Purdue and No. 18 Wisconsin had the biggest jump among the teams in the poll, each climbing six spots. No. 16 Ole Miss is up five places after splitting games against No. 4 Alabama and No. 14 Mississippi State.

No. 24 Memphis had the week’s biggest drop, losing six places after losing to Temple and beating Charlotte. Two-time NCAA champion UConn fell five places to No. 19 after seeing its 28-game home winning streak end in a 68-63 loss to Creighton.

    Welcome back

No. 22 Missouri is ranked for the first time this season after ending Florida’s 16-game home winning streak and posting an 18-point win over Arkansas. No. 23 West Virginia is back in the poll after taking down Iowa State.

Louisville had not been ranked since reaching No. 25 on Jan. 25, 2021.

Three ranked teams lost both of their games last week and dropped out of the poll.

Gonzaga lost to Oregon State and Santa Clara, falling out of the AP Top 25 for the first time since early last year. Georgia dropped out from No. 23 following losses to Tennessee and Auburn. Baylor, No. 25 a week ago, is out after losses to Arizona and TCU.

Utah State’s stint in the AP Top 25 lasted two weeks. The Aggies dropped out from No. 22 following a 65-62 loss to UNLV.

    Conference watch

The SEC has eight ranked teams after Georgia dropped out of the poll, including five in the top 10.

The Big Ten was next with six, followed by the Big 12 with five. The Big East and Atlantic Coast each had two ranked teams, with the American Athletic and Mountain West conferences at one each.

In a stunning turn of events, Auburn has taken over the top spot in the college basketball rankings, becoming the unanimous No. 1 team in the country. The Tigers have been on a tear this season, racking up impressive wins and dominating their opponents.

Meanwhile, Duke has moved up to No. 2 in the rankings after a strong showing in recent games. The Blue Devils have proven themselves as a formidable force on the court, with their talented roster and skilled coaching staff.

It’s shaping up to be an exciting season in college basketball, with Auburn and Duke leading the way as the top teams in the nation. Fans can expect some thrilling matchups as these teams battle it out for supremacy on the court.

  • Eagles roster news: Nakobe Dean to injured reserve among 5 moves

The Philadelphia Eagles officially announced five roster moves on Tuesday afternoon. An overview:

    • LB Nakobe Dean was placed on injured reserve.
    • WR Parris Campbell was signed from the practice squad to the active roster.
    • LB Nicholas Morrow and WR Elijah Cooks were signed to the practice squad.
    • WR Joe Ngata was released from the practice squad.

Let’s sort through this news on a player-by-player basis.

    NAKOBE DEAN

Dean suffered a torn patellar tendon in his knee during the Eagles’ Wild Card win over the Green Bay Packers. He’s out for the rest of the playoffs and he could miss games during the 2025 season as well.

Very unfortunate development for Dean, who was having a pretty great breakout season and is a well-liked guy in the locker room. The Eagles’ defense is certainly worse without him.

Exactly how the Eagles go about replacing Dean remains to be seen. We do know that Zack Baun will take over green dot duties as the defensive play-caller; Vic Fangio confirmed as much on Tuesday. Fangio also suggested that we could see Oren Burks and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. split snaps at linebacker next to Baun.

    PARRIS CAMPBELL

The Eagles signed Campbell to fill the roster spot opened by Dean going on IR.

This move doesn’t come as a surprise since the Eagles made Campbell one of their two temporary practice squad elevations for their Wild Card game. Serving as a fifth wide receiver behind A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Jahan Dotson, and Johnny Wilson, Campbell logged zero offensive snaps and just two special teams snaps.

Campbell being bumped up cements Ainias Smith as a healthy scratch sixth wide receiver moving forward.

    NICHOLAS MORROW

Morrow’s return to Philly was first reported earlier on Tuesday.

With Dean going on IR, the Eagles only have three off-ball linebackers on their roster: Baun, Burks, and Trotter Jr. Signing Morrow to the practice squad allows the team to temporarily elevate him from the practice squad to have a fourth linebacker available for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.

One would figure Morrow will be limited to special teams duty, barring additional linebacker injuries.

    ELIJAH COOKS

Cooks is a new addition to the Eagles.

The 26-year-old wide receiver played six years in college (five at Nevada, one at San Jose State) before signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2023.

Cooks appeared in nine games as a rookie and played 108 offensive snaps. He was targeted four times for three receptions and 38 yards. Cooks spent the 2024 season on the Jaguars’ practice squad and appeared in two games, playing just 10 offensive snaps.

Cooks is a relatively big receiver at 6’4”, 215 pounds.

    JOE NGATA

The Eagles only brought Ngata back to Philly last Friday. His return clearly didn’t last long with the Eagles seemingly preferring Cooks to him.

    EAGLES PRACTICE SQUAD

Practice squad players can be temporarily elevated to the game day roster up to three times in the regular season and an unlimited number of times in the postseason.

    WR Elijah Cooks

    LB Nicholas Morrow

    FB Khari Blasingame

    QB Ian Book

    DB Tariq Castro-Fields

    RB Tyrion Davis-Price

    LB Dallas Gant

    WR Danny Gray

    DT Gabe Hall

    DE Charles Harris

    DE KJ Henry

    DE Ochaun Mathis

    CB Parry Nickerson

    WR Kyle Philips

    S Andre’ Sam

    DB A.J. Woods

    OT Laekin Vakalahi (international exemption)

The Philadelphia Eagles have made some significant changes to their roster ahead of their upcoming game. Linebacker Nakobe Dean has been placed on injured reserve, causing him to miss multiple games due to a lingering injury.

In addition to Dean being placed on injured reserve, the Eagles have made four other moves to shake up their roster. These moves include signing a new linebacker, promoting a wide receiver from the practice squad, releasing a cornerback, and adding a defensive lineman to the active roster.

The loss of Dean will be a tough blow for the Eagles defense, but the team is confident in their depth and ability to adjust. Fans will be eager to see how these roster changes impact the team’s performance in the upcoming games.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Eagles roster news and how these moves will shape the team moving forward.

  • Significant Winter Storm Moves Into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast

A significant winter storm was settling into portions of the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast on Sunday before dangerously low temperatures envelop much of the country in some of the coldest weather in years, National Weather Service forecasters said.

Snow started in the Appalachians on Sunday morning, and was falling in parts of the Mid-Atlantic, including New York City, in the afternoon. The heaviest snowfall is expected north and west of the Interstate 95 corridor, with up to eight inches possible, according to the Weather Service.

Areas from northern Maryland to Boston could get three to six inches of snow, with some spots potentially getting more. Northern Virginia to southern New Jersey may get a mix of rain and snow.

Much of the Northeast is under winter storm warnings or winter weather advisories. A winter storm warning is issued when severe winter weather is expected or already occurring, and could make travel extremely dangerous or even impossible. An advisory is for less severe conditions.

The New York City metropolitan area, Long Island, southern Westchester and coastal Connecticut are under winter weather advisories until 4 a.m. on Monday. Snowfall accumulations of three to five inches are expected, which may lead to slippery travel and snow-covered roads through Sunday afternoon and night.

Ground stops were possible and delays were expected later in the day at airports in the Northeast, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The affected airports included the four major airports in the New York metropolitan area, Dulles International Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport near Washington, D.C., as well as at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall and Philadelphia International Airports. Delays were also expected at Boston’s Logan International Airport, according to the airport’s website.

Airlines, including Delta, American and JetBlue, said they would waive fees for some ticket changes made by affected travelers.

Forecasters at the New York office of the Weather Service warned that snowfall rates could be up to one inch per hour at times. Inland areas of New York, such as the Lower Hudson Valley, may get up to eight inches of snow.

Immediately after the storm clears out early on Monday, arctic air will plunge across most of the south-central and southeastern parts of the United States, bringing several days of frigid conditions.

This is the coldest air of the winter season so far, and in many cases the coldest in several years, forecasters from the National Weather Service warned.

The high temperatures will be from below zero to single digits in the Northern Plains and the Upper Midwest; single digits and teens across the Rockies, the central Plains and the Midwest; the teens and 20s across the Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic; and between the 20s and 30s in Texas and the Southeast.

The Weather Service said wind chills would be at dangerously low levels and hypothermia or frostbite could occur with prolonged exposure or lack of proper clothing.

Wind chills from 30 to 55 degrees below zero are expected at times on Monday in the Rockies, the northern Plains and the Upper Midwest, and subzero as far south as Oklahoma and the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys.

In Chicago on Sunday, temperatures were in the single digits at 11 a.m.

Ann Marie Saviano, 51, who lives in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood on the city’s South Side, said she had plans to meet friends for brunch, go grocery shopping and attend a birthday party.

“It’s that time of year we call hibernation season — when people retreat into their dens to stay warm and cozy for one to four days, and emerge ready to face the world when it’s a balmy 23 degrees,” Ms. Saviano said.

“But this is Chicago,” she added, and people still have to get things done.

Cheryl Atwood, 50, from Chicago’s Lincoln Square neighborhood, was buying groceries on Sunday and said she had a full day planned on Monday. “Everyone I know, it’s business as usual,” she said.

Forecasters warned of a significant winter storm across the Gulf Coast states coming Monday, as a combination of frigid air and a storm system over the Gulf is expected to bring snow, freezing rain and ice to the region that could lead to major travel disruptions.

As the storm moves eastward from Texas, it is forecast to sweep across Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and the Carolinas.

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm watches for portions of Louisiana. The most snowfall is likely to be between the U.S. 190 and Interstate 10 corridors of Louisiana and southeast Texas, where four to six inches may accumulate. Farther north and south of this, three to four inches are expected.

By Tuesday night, the storm is expected to reach the Atlantic coast, bringing icy or wintry weather farther north.

Amanda Holpuch, Camille Baker and Robert Chiarito contributed reporting.

Get ready, East Coast! A significant winter storm is making its way into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions, bringing with it heavy snowfall, strong winds, and bitterly cold temperatures.

This powerful storm system is expected to impact a large portion of the East Coast, with snowfall totals ranging from several inches to over a foot in some areas. Travel disruptions are likely, as roadways become slick and visibility is reduced.

Residents are urged to take precautions and prepare for the storm by stocking up on essentials, checking on elderly or vulnerable neighbors, and staying off the roads if possible. Power outages are also a possibility, so it’s a good idea to have flashlights, batteries, and extra blankets on hand.

Stay safe and warm during this winter storm, and remember to check in with local news sources for updates and advisories. Let’s all hunker down and ride out this winter weather together! #WinterStorm #StaySafe #EastCoastWeather

  • Sun this morning before steady snow moves in

Video: Sun this morning before steady snow moves in tonight

Matt Hoenig has a look at the best and worst time to travel as snow moves across the state.

Quiet for now, but our next system arrives later on tonight with some steady snow, and that’s going to create some tough travel conditions later on this evening and through the overnight hours. It is *** mostly sunny morning with some areas of patchy fog. Expect the clouds to thicken up later. Iran and some snow will start to break out between about 4 and 7 o’clock this evening. The heaviest falls from 8 o’clock through midnight tonight, but it is largely done by early tomorrow morning. It’s of course *** busy travel day on this long holiday weekend. Expect the roads to be in great shape through at least 1 noon time or even 1 or 2 o’clock, but beyond 3, that’s when we’ll start to see some lower impacts due to some light snow breaking out after 5 or 6 o’clock tonight. It’s very high impacts due to weather as roads quickly become slippery and snow covered. Weather system moving through the deep South tonight or this morning I should say gains some energy off the East Coast and that will arrive here in New England later on this evening, but it’s *** quick mover. It’s out of here by early Monday so what comes our way is *** quick but fairly intense burst of snow later on today. Clouds breaking for some sunshine through late morning, but then we’ll see the clouds return later on today. Light snow should start to break out after 4 o’clock. It will turn steady, if not even heavy for *** couple of hours in southern parts of the state this evening. Snowfall rates could approach 1 inch per hour. That will lower visibility out on the roadways and just expect slow and tough travel conditions all night long. After about 2 a.m., I think the intensity of the snow will start to wane *** bit. As skies will brighten up right around sunrise tomorrow morning, expect anything that’s untreated or unplowed early tomorrow to certainly be tough going, but otherwise I think the commute. Into work tomorrow if you have to work on MLK Day looks OK, at least *** lot better compared to what we’ll have out there tonight. Much of the state now expected to pick up 4 to 8 inches of snow. The best chance of picking up over *** half foot will be in the southern part of the state. You get say north of Plymouth up through the western White Mountains, northern parts of the Connecticut River Valley into the Great North Woods. It’s *** bit of *** lighter snowfall there with 2 to 4 inches expected, and this will be very light and fluffy, so it adds up pretty quickly along the coastline by 10 o’clock tonight, already 2 inches on the ground in Portsmouth, and by early tomorrow morning we’ll wake up to about *** half foot of fresh snowfall in Lincoln. This is great news for places like Loon and. In nearby 5 inches of snow on the ground by sunrise on Monday. What follows this system is *** blast of some bitter cold air. Nighttime temperatures through the early part of the week likely to slip back below zero for *** lot of us. And when you factor in *** gusty wind both Monday and Tuesday, it will feel like it is sub-zero at times. Check out the wind chills. Early on Monday, 10 to 15 degrees below zero far north and *** few degrees below zero in central and southern New Hampshire. Even with some sunshine tomorrow, it still feels bitterly cold on Monday afternoon. *** good idea to bundle up if you have to be outdoors for more than just *** couple of minutes, and these kind of conditions, frostbite can form in about 15 to 20 minutes on exposed skin. And then the real core of this cold air overhead early Tuesday morning as wind chills dip between 10 and 20 below statewide. High temperatures today back in the 30s to near 40 for many of us as early sun gives way to increasing clouds and then the Arctic air spills in tonight as that snow continues through the wee hours of tomorrow. Morning. Several days of impact weather due to the cold, blustery weather on the way through Tuesday and Wednesday. It is mostly quiet though as high pressure sits nearby that’ll provide us with *** fair amount of sunshine though each afternoon there may be some bubbly clouds working on through. There may be *** spot flurry on Thursday as the temperatures gradually moderate through late week.

Matt Hoenig has a look at the best and worst time to travel as snow moves across the state.

As I gazed out my window this morning, the sun was shining brightly, casting a warm glow over everything it touched. The sky was a brilliant shade of blue, with not a cloud in sight.

However, this peaceful scene is not meant to last. Weather reports indicate that steady snowfall is on the way, set to move in later today. The contrast between the sunny morning and the impending snowstorm is a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of winter weather.

As I take in the beauty of the sun-drenched landscape outside, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for the snow that is to come. The peaceful morning will soon be transformed into a winter wonderland, blanketed in a layer of white.

But for now, I will savor the fleeting moments of sunshine before the snowfall arrives, grateful for the beauty of each changing season.

Outsides of a few showers in the morning, rain chances will start to diminish as a whole throughout Sunday. Skies will clear out by the afternoon with highs back in the 50s to near 60-degrees. Winds are also forecast to increase tomorrow with the frontal passage. Expect gusts as high as 30-35 MPH during the afternoon hours. The colder air behind the front will start to funnel in by tomorrow night.

    WIS
    WIS(WIS)

First Alert Weather Days remain in place for the first half of the week ahead for the threat of extreme cold and chance of wintry precipitation. High temperatures for multiple days next week will top out only in the 30s with overnight lows in the teens. With the wind factored in, it could feel much colder at times with winds chills as low as the single digits in some spots.

    WIS
    WIS(WIS)

The potential for any wintry weather would exist Tuesday into Tuesday night. Models are coming in a better agreement that the path of this low-pressure system could pass just south of the Midlands. This scenario would give much of the area at least a chance of seeing snow/a wintry mix, especially locations south of I-20. The exact details on accumulation amounts, extent of impacts is still somewhat uncertain. Continue to check back in for more updates as we get closer to time.
