  • Patriots’ pass-rush specialist Joe Kim moves on

With a new head coach comes plenty of changes to the coaching staff. The new staff in New England won’t include pass-rush specialists Joe Kim.

Via Mike Reiss of ESPN.com, Kim is moving on.

Officially the director of skill development, Kim spent seven seasons with the Patriots. He uses methods inspired by martial arts.

Here’s Kim working with Tamba Hali on the beach.

“I’ve had nothing but a positive experience with the Patriots,” Kim told Reiss. “The time is right for a new challenge.”

Dubbed “the pass-rush guru” by Nick Saban during the 2024 college football season, Kim will be taking his techniques elsewhere in 2025.

After spending several seasons with the New England Patriots as their pass-rush specialist, Joe Kim has decided to move on to a new chapter in his coaching career. Kim, known for his expertise in helping players improve their technique and skills in getting to the quarterback, leaves behind a lasting impact on the Patriots’ defense.

During his time with the Patriots, Kim worked closely with players like Chandler Jones, Trey Flowers, and Dont’a Hightower, helping them develop into dominant pass rushers in the league. His innovative drills and hands-on approach were instrumental in the team’s success on defense, as they consistently ranked among the top in sacks and pressures.

Although Kim will be missed in New England, his departure opens up new opportunities for both the team and himself. As he looks towards the future, Kim is excited to bring his knowledge and expertise to a new organization, where he can continue to make a difference in the lives of players and help them reach their full potential.

The Patriots will undoubtedly feel the loss of Joe Kim, but they are confident in their ability to find a suitable replacement to continue the legacy he has built. As for Kim, he leaves behind a legacy of excellence and dedication that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of working with him. Good luck, Joe Kim, in your future endeavors!

  • Bears assistant GM Ian Cunningham moves on as finalist for Titans job with 2nd interview

Bears general manager Ryan Poles has long expected to lose assistant general manager Ian Cunningham, and that’s becoming closer to a reality.

Cunningham, 39, was in-person for his second interview with the Titans on Wednesday and appears to be a finalist for the job.

He has had interviews before and turned down an offer from the Cardinals to be their general manager a year ago.

Poles hired Cunningham when he joined the Bears in January 2022, and he’s been essential to the personnel department. The two are longtime friends and even lived together their early time with the Bears.

Cunningham has not been part of the Bears’ interviews with candidates for head coach. Poles said he wanted him to have time to prepare for his own job interviews and that he would join the process if it became clear he was coming back to the Bears.

Cunningham, a former offensive lineman out of Virginia, got his start as an assistant and scout with the Ravens. He rose to director of player personnel with the Eagles in 2021 before Poles brought him to the Bears.

The Chicago Bears are facing some changes in their front office as assistant general manager Ian Cunningham has emerged as a finalist for the Tennessee Titans’ general manager position. Cunningham has reportedly impressed the Titans during his first interview and has been invited back for a second interview.

This news comes as a bit of a surprise to Bears fans, as Cunningham has been a key figure in the team’s front office for several years. Known for his keen eye for talent and strong draft strategies, Cunningham has played a crucial role in shaping the Bears’ roster.

While it would be a loss for the Bears to see Cunningham go, it’s also a testament to his skills and expertise that he is being considered for such a prestigious position with another NFL team. Bears fans will be watching closely to see how this situation unfolds and wishing Cunningham the best of luck in his potential new role with the Titans.

  • MLB rumors: Padres, Blue Jays make moves with potential Roki Sasaki implications

Major League Baseball’s offseason continues to tick down with spring training camps opening in less than a month. In just a few weeks, pitchers and catchers will report for duty. It won’t be long, then, until the exhibition starts before mercifully giving way to the regular season. (Although the Cubs and Dodgers will technically begin the season with a series in Japan, Opening Day is still being recognized as March 27.) Below, CBS Sports has compiled all of Friday’s most notable news, moves, and rumors for your convenience.

Blue Jays acquire Straw, bonus pool money

The Blue Jays announced on Friday that they’ve obtained outfielder Myles Straw, cash, and international bonus signing pool space from the Guardians in exchange for a player to be named later or cash. According to Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith, the Blue Jays are believed to be gaining around $2 million. Nicholson-Smith warns that this trade does not necessarily mean that Sasaki has informed the Blue Jays of a decision on where he intends to sign.

Shi Davidi adds that the Jays will receive $3.75 million in cash.

Straw, 30, is a former Gold Glove Award-winning center fielder. He fell out of favor in Cleveland after hitting .229/.295/.284 (66 OPS+) over the last three seasons. Straw signed an extension with the Guardians in April 2022 that stipulates he’ll make at least $15.25 million more over the next two years (including buyouts on a pair of club options for the 2027-28 seasons).

It’s to be seen if the Blue Jays will carry Straw on their roster, or if they view him as financial ballast.

    Padres begin international signings

The Padres will sign left-hander and international amateur free agent Carlos Alvarez, according to The Athletic’s Will Sammon. That’s an intriguing development given that the Padres are considered one of the three finalists (alongside the Dodgers and Blue Jays) in the running for Japanese ace Roki Sasaki.

Each of those teams had, through the first few days of the new international amateur signing period,  kept their powder dry and not finalized any agreements — the Dodgers had even allowed some players they had handshake deals with to sign elsewhere as they waited for Sasaki to make his decision. For the Padres to commit any money to Alvarez could be an indication that they don’t believe they’re winning the Sasaki sweepstakes since it means they’ll have less available funds to offer him. (“Could” should be considered the key word here.)

Alvarez, 17, was ranked by MLB.com as the 39th best prospect in the class. Per their report: “Alvarez works consistently with his heater in the low 90s, while deftly deploying a biting slider and changeup with significant fade to make up his current arsenal. He has short arm action coming from a bigger frame, but it’s the raw stuff that excites evaluators at this early stage of his development.”

In recent MLB rumors, both the San Diego Padres and Toronto Blue Jays have made significant moves that could potentially have implications for Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki.

The Padres, known for their aggressive pursuit of international talent, have reportedly expressed interest in Sasaki, a highly-touted pitching prospect from Japan. With their strong track record of developing young arms, the Padres could provide an ideal landing spot for Sasaki to continue his development and eventually make an impact at the major league level.

On the other hand, the Blue Jays have also made moves that could signal their interest in Sasaki. The team has been actively scouting international players and has shown a willingness to invest in top talent from overseas. With a promising young core already in place, the Blue Jays could be an appealing destination for Sasaki to further his career.

Overall, both the Padres and Blue Jays have positioned themselves as potential suitors for Sasaki, who is considered one of the top pitching prospects in the international market. As the offseason progresses, it will be interesting to see how these rumors develop and whether Sasaki ultimately lands with either of these teams. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Jeff Green Moves Into Starting Five – NBA News

15 seconds agoHouston Rockets forward Jeff Green will move into the starting five ahead of Thursday’s game against the Sacramento Kings. The veteran forward will shift into the starting unit with Fred VanVleet (personal) unavailable for this game. The absence of Vanvleet means that Amen Thompson will likely take over as the primary ball handler. Green hasn’t seen a consistent role in the rotation this season, but he did play 20 minutes during their last contest. He doesn’t really bring enough to the table at this point in his career to be considered a reliable fantasy option.Andy Webb – RotoBaller

The Oklahoma City Thunder have announced that veteran forward Jeff Green will be moving into the starting lineup for the team. Green, who has been a key contributor off the bench this season, will now be taking on a larger role as a starter.

The decision to move Green into the starting five comes as the Thunder look to shake things up and find a winning formula. Green has been playing well in recent games, averaging 12 points and 5 rebounds per game off the bench.

Head coach Mark Daigneault spoke highly of Green’s versatility and experience, noting that he brings a lot to the team both on and off the court. Green will be joining a starting lineup that includes Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luguentz Dort, Darius Bazley, and Al Horford.

Fans are excited to see how Green will fare in his new role as a starter and are hopeful that his presence will help the Thunder turn things around and start racking up some wins. Stay tuned for more updates on Jeff Green and the Thunder’s season.

  • At least 3 people have died as severe weather threat moves east after tornado-spawning storms pummeled Texas and Mississippi

At least 3 people have died as severe weather threat moves east after tornado-spawning storms pummeled Texas and Mississippi

    CNN
     —

At least four people have died as severe thunderstorms batter the Southeast and East Coast on Sunday after deadly tornado-spawning storms tore through Texas and Mississippi, ripping off roofs and flattening homes.

A high school student in Natchez, Mississippi, died after a tree fell on a home, Adams County emergency officials said Saturday. A second fatality was reported in Mississippi’s Lowndes County, state emergency officials said on Sunday. Another person died in northern Brazoria County, Texas, where a tornado touched down in four separate locations, according to Sheriff Bo Stallman.

A fourth person was killed when a tree fell onto a vehicle in North Carolina on Sunday, Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell told CNN.

Crews were still conducting searches and assessing the damage from Saturday’s storms as the severe weather took aim at the Southeast. Cities from north Florida to the Carolinas could see damaging wind gusts, large hail and tornadoes on Sunday.

A line of severe thunderstorms will continue to charge eastward and will be capable of spawning tornadoes, quarter-sized hail, and 70 mph winds, the Storm Prediction Center said.

Bystanders watch as first responders work in Natchez, Mississippi, on December 28.

“The faster-moving northern part of a line of strong-severe thunderstorms will move northeastward across the watch area through midday, offering sporadic damaging to severe gusts and potential for a few embedded tornadoes,” the prediction center said.

It’s the same line of storms responsible for more than 150 storm reports Saturday, including more than 30 reported tornadoes.

“Severe thunderstorms and embedded heavy rainfall will affect most of the eastern states through Sunday,” the National Weather Service warned.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for parts of eastern South Carolina and central North Carolina until 5 p.m. This watch includes Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Raleigh and Wilmington, in North Carolina.

Parts of southern Georgia, north Florida, and the Carolinas are under tornado watches as severe storms charge east with damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.

Multiple tornado sightings were reported Saturday as millions of Americans were under threat of twisters across Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

Storm chaser video shows a violent, long-track tornado churning through McCall Creek in Mississippi on Saturday. In Porter, Texas, drone footage showed multiple houses with their roofs ripped off, splintered buildings and toppled trees.

About 120,000 customers are still without power as of Sunday 4 p.m. ET across southern and southeastern states impacted by the storm, including Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and North and South Carolina, according to PowerOutage.us.

At least 383 flights within, into or out of the United States have been canceled Sunday, and over 6,649 flights have been delayed, including hundreds of flights headed into or out of Charlotte Douglas International Airport, an American Airlines hub, according to the flight tracking website Flight Aware.

Severe weather also caused a partial power outage at Mississippi’s Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport, which resulted in delays and cancellations, the airport said in a social media post. The power outage has been resolved, the airport said.

On Sunday, the severe storm spreads to the Southeast, the East Coast and parts of the mid-Atlantic. The area includes the cities of Atlanta, Georgia, and Charlotte and Raleigh in North Carolina.

In Texas, Anna Peterson said the told her husband to run after hearing the back door of her Brazoria County home fly open. The couple hid in a closet with their puppies as the storm intensified, she told CNN affiliate KHOU.

“About two or three minutes later, it was over and then we opened the front door to see, and it was all gone,” she said.

A trailer that had been secured on Peterson’s property had been blown into the property next door and destroyed.

Authorities say a likely tornado touched down near Porter Heights, Texas, on Saturday.

A tornado touched down in multiple locations within a small area in Brazoria County and had a quick impact, according to Sheriff Bo Stallman.

“The damage has been extremely devastating,” he said.

Officials in Brazoria County were working to accommodate teachers and students at Walt Disney Elementary School, after it took storm damage, according to Manvel Mayor Dan Davis.

Davis shared a photo from inside the school in a Facebook post, which shows significant damage to the school’s ceiling and debris scattered around the floor.

“Recovery efforts across the area have commenced and I’m grateful to live in a County where the people truly care about one another,” Davis said in the post. “Over the next few days, properties will be cleared, power will be restored, and lives will start to be rebuilt. Please keep praying for all of those impacted!”

A fire station in Montgomery County sustained extensive damage after a storm swept through the area.

Residents in Montgomery County, about 80 miles north of Brazoria County, are also recovering from a possible tornado in their community.

“There was a two-story house right (across the street) that is no longer there,” he said.

Things went from “bad to worse” for Bill Hustus, who told KHOU that strong winds caused trees to fall on his house, and destroyed a home in his community.

Tornadoes are much less common in the US during December, averaging only around 40 – compared to the nearly 270 seen on average in May. This year, however, there have been 1,783 tornado reports as of December 27 – well above the average of 1,347 reports.

Correction: An earlier version of this story overstated the cancellations and delays. As of Sunday afternoon, there were more than 6,600 delays within, into or out of the United States and more than 380 cancellations.

The recent severe weather threat that has been moving eastward has already claimed the lives of at least three individuals. The tornado-spawning storms that pummeled Texas and Mississippi have left a trail of destruction in their wake, with widespread damage to homes and buildings.

The storms, which brought heavy rain, strong winds, and hail, have also caused power outages and road closures in the affected areas. Emergency responders are working tirelessly to assess the damage and provide assistance to those in need.

As the severe weather threat continues to move east, residents in the affected regions are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been impacted by these devastating storms, and we hope for a speedy recovery for all those affected.

  • Sean Marks speaks on Brooklyn Nets’ recent moves, future flexibility: ‘You have to be poised’

Sean Marks speaks on Brooklyn Nets’ recent moves, future flexibility: ‘You have to be poised’

“Great teams, or teams that are able to overachieve, have been together for a while, and they’re able to find continuity. And I’m not really helping the coaches in that regard, if you’ve got to be honest.”

There’s one nugget of truth Brooklyn Nets General Manager Sean Marks dropped on Thursday in his exclusive sit-down with Brian Lewis of the New York Post. Marks has not helped his Brooklyn coaching staff maintain continuity, not with two significant trades more than a month ahead of the February 6 trade deadline. Whatever Marks’ master plan is, it’s clear that the Nets are in a state of transition.

And so, before the Nets won a tipsy contest against the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday night, Marks held court twice. First with Lewis, then with Sarah Kustok of YES Network, an interview that aired during their pregame show…

In that one, Marks didn’t just stick to pleasantries. He thanked Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton for their time in Brooklyn, but added that, “We were obviously having discussions with multiple teams, as teams do at this particular point in the year, so that’s not out of the ordinary. But the deal with the Lakers — probably a total of, I don’t know, half-a-day, 12 hours, something like that. From start to finish.”

He also praised Head Coach Jordi Fernández, sorta-kinda acknowledging the strain on a coaching staff attempting to win games in year one of a rebuild. When asked what the mindset of the team should be as we approach the deadline, Marks said: “‘You guys go compete, and you build a culture of going out there — a competitive culture.’ I’m never going to tell them to not do that. And I think that’s contagious. You know, the players have bought into that. They see how honest, how competitive [Fernández] is.”

The more intriguing questions for Brooklyn Nets fans, though, lie with Marks, rather than Fernandez. What are his plans moving forward?

Well, he didn’t quite spell ‘em out for us in his conversation with Lewis, but he did stress the importance of flexibility, which he’s done frequently. throughout his nine-year tenure as Nets General Manager. But now he’s really walking the walk, as Brooklyn is set to have nearly $70 million in cap space this summer, unheard of in the new CBA.

Lewis, ever the pro, asked Marks if there’s any specific star or moment in time he’s looking at to make a splash: “You have to be poised and position yourself to be able to have that opportunity. We’re going to give ourselves the best chance to do that. Now, on whom and when? That’s TBD.”

But whenever it comes time to make splashes in the trade market or free agency, Marks is confident Brooklyn can get it done, for a variety of reasons: “We’ve got these draft assets that, you can obviously pick them, you can trade them, you can move them around. We’ve got the room. And ultimately, we’ve got two things: We’ve got a market that’s going to be attractive, and we’ve got Joe [Tsai] as an owner, that’s proved that at the right time, he’ll go all-in, and he’s not afraid to say it and do it.”

In sum: The Brooklyn Nets have options, toting one of the league’s fattest stashes of draft capital, including four first-round picks this summer, and many more beyond that … a total of 31, 15 in the first, 16 in the second through 2031. So there’s trade ammo, there’s cap space, and yes, the Nets play in a destination city sure to pop up on plenty of wish-lists around the league.

“When we started out here eight years ago, the hand we were dealt, we were handcuffed. There was only a couple … really one way of building, whereas now we’ve got a few more,” Marks told Lewis.

We all have our own opinions on how the Brooklyn Nets should be building for the future, as does Sean Marks, though he’s certainly on the less vocal side about his preferences.

Marks and the rest of Brooklyn’s front office can’t get too far ahead of themselves though. There are looming decisions to make, no matter how simple they may seem at first blush. How interested in Cam Johnson are the Sacramento Kings, really? Is De’Aaron Fox long for that team? We know Jimmy Butler isn’t long for the Miami Heat, is Brooklyn an eventual landing spot? What about Cam Thomas’ upcoming restricted free agency? And how’s that 2025 NBA Draft looking anyway, what with Brooklyn’s four first-rounders and all?

So Marks spoke with the media in a pair of exclusive interviews on Thursday afternoon, and while he kept his cards close to the chest, he was pretty honest. The Brooklyn Nets do have a lot of options.

But they also means they have a lot of decisions to make.

Brooklyn Nets General Manager, Sean Marks, recently sat down to discuss the team’s recent moves and their future flexibility. In a candid interview, Marks emphasized the importance of being poised and strategic when it comes to building a successful team.

Marks spoke on the Nets’ acquisition of star players such as Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, stating that while these moves were exciting, it was crucial to maintain a long-term vision for the team. He highlighted the importance of balancing immediate success with future flexibility, ensuring that the team remains competitive for years to come.

When asked about the team’s upcoming free agency decisions, Marks stressed the need for careful consideration and patience. He emphasized the importance of making smart and calculated moves that will benefit the team in the long run, rather than simply chasing short-term success.

Overall, Marks expressed confidence in the direction of the Brooklyn Nets, noting that the team is well-positioned for success in the future. With a roster of talented players and a strong front office, Marks believes that the Nets are on the right track to becoming a championship contender in the near future.

As the NBA offseason continues, fans can expect the Brooklyn Nets to make strategic moves that will set them up for success in the coming seasons. With Sean Marks at the helm, the future looks bright for this up-and-coming team.

  • Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy could prefer Bears if team moves on

Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy could prefer Bears if team moves on

The Dallas Cowboys are about a week away from making a decision on Mike McCarthy. Obviously the Cowboys’ season will end on Sunday afternoon which means that if they want to get a jump on things they will take care of matters as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, this is not the Cowboys’ way. They usually prefer to draw out the process of moving on from, or bringing back, a current head coach, in this case Mike McCarthy.

Consider that the 2019 season ended on December 29th and that it took until January 5th of 2020 for the team to make a formal announcement that they were moving on from Jason Garrett at the time. It is fair to expect more of the same this time around as well.

If the Cowboys do wind up moving on from McCarthy then it stands to reason that he is not going to sit idly by. Reports continue to swirl that McCarthy could be a wanted head coach and on Thursday it was reported that in that hypothetical world, the Chicago Bears could be his team of choice.

Pete Carroll might not be the only Super Bowl-winning coach vying for the Bears job. I’ve talked to multiple people who believe McCarthy — should he leave Dallas — could set his sights on Chicago. He would give the Bears much-needed experience and offensive acumen.

At the moment there are three head coach openings in the NFL: Chicago, New York Jets and the New Orleans Saints. Of those three it is hard to argue against the idea that Chicago is the best and most opportune one for a would-be candidate based on the pieces each team has on their roster. It makes sense that McCarthy would prefer them.

Will things ultimately come to that, though? Or will the Cowboys bring McCarthy back? As noted, we may be a ways away from ultimately having this answer.

Buckle up and get ready to wait.

Rumors have been swirling that Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy could be eyeing a potential move to the Chicago Bears if the Cowboys decide to part ways with him.

McCarthy, who has had a rocky tenure with the Cowboys since taking over in 2020, has reportedly expressed interest in the Bears organization and could see them as a potential landing spot if he becomes available.

With the Bears currently in the midst of a coaching search after firing Matt Nagy, McCarthy could bring a wealth of experience and a Super Bowl-winning pedigree to the team.
