Forced to retire in disgrace after a mission ends in disaster, Smiley is secretly brought back into service to hunt a mole in the Circus. Garry Oldman led the cast as protagonist George Smiley, depicting a thoughtful man, driven by loyalty and saddened by betrayal from both his friends and family. His colleagues and chief suspects, meanwhile, were skillfully portrayed by Colin Firth, Ciarán Hinds, David Dencik, and Toby Jones. Firth, Hinds, and Jones were already established actors in English-language media while Dencik was accomplished in Swedish cinema with Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, marking his breakthrough into English-language movies.
Along with these established stars, John Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch joined the cast just as their film careers were taking off. Hardy, who plays a spy who does the dirty work of British intelligence, had already had plenty of supporting roles but would soon go on to star in films like Mad Max: Fury Road and Venom. Cumberbatch, playing a spy handler who allies with Smiley, had just begun his time as Sherlock Holmes on the BBC’s adaptation of the detective’s stories and was on the cusp of becoming a major movie star. This film from “Florida Project” director Sean Baker feels like the “Pretty Woman” for this century – and it even includes a bold mention of Cinderella, like that film does. “Anora” is nominated for six Academy Awards in total, and is now playing in theaters. Alternatively, it can be purchased for streaming on Prime Video or Apple TV.
A three-and-a-half hour opus, “The Brutalist” stars Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones as Hungarian refugees who come to the US after WWII – and also involves architecture. “The Brutalist” is playing in theaters, with an intermission, and is not yet available to stream online.
Covering Bob Dylan’s influential decision to “go electric” at a popular music festival in 1965, “A Complete Unknown” features show-stopping (and Oscar-nominated) performances from Timothée Chalamet, Edward Norton and Monica Barbaro. The movie is playing in select theaters. You can catch Chalamet at home this weekend, however, when he hosts “Saturday Night Live.”
Going behind closed doors to reveal the process of electing a new pope, this quietly intense film earned eight Oscar nominations, including best actor for Ralph Fiennes and best supporting actress for Isabella Rossellini. “Conclave” is available to stream on Peacock.
Denis Villeneuve’s continuation of his epic adaptation of Frank Herbert’s landmark science fiction novel, “Dune” was recognized by the Academy with nominations for best picture, production design, visual effects and cinematography. It is now available to stream on Netflix and Max, as well as Hulu and Prime Video.
This hybrid musical/crime drama may be the one to beat this year, as it earned a whopping 13 nominations on Thursday. The movie, about a drug lord seeking gender reassignment surgery, stars Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña – both nominated for their roles – along with Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz. “Emilia Pérez” is available to stream on Netflix.
Based on a true story, “I’m Still Here” follows a mother of five who is forced to reinvent herself amid escalating violence under Brazilian dictatorship in the 1970s. The film is also nominated for best international feature, and best lead actress for Fernanda Torres. “I’m Still Here” is playing in select theaters. It will later be available to stream on Apple TV+.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Colson Whitehead, the film chronicles the harrowing journey of two young Black men as they navigate a tough reform school together in Florida. “Nickel Boys” is playing in theaters now.
Marking a major accomplishment for genre films getting recognized in the best picture category, Coralie Fargeat’s engrossing body horror fable ruminates on aging and features an incredible (and Oscar-nominated) turn from star Demi Moore. “The Substance” is streaming on Prime Video with a premium subscription. It is also available for purchase on Apple TV.

2025 won’t be any different, as Netflix has several major movies coming out over the next twelve months. Tom Hardy is one of the most accomplished actors of his generation, and everything he does comes with a degree of anticipation and prestige. However, Havoc is slightly more interesting, as it was initially shot in 2021 and has been in something of a limbo ever since it wrapped. Delays concerning the 2023 strikes and scheduling issues, plus reshoots last year, meant that the film went far too long without seeing the light of day.
Directed by The Raid‘s Gareth Evans, Havoc follows a detective entering the criminal world to save a politician’s son after a drug deal gone wrong. The supporting cast includes Oscar winner Forest Whitaker and Emmy nominee Timothy Olyphant, making it an even hotter ticket. It’s still unknown when it will premiere, but Evans stated last year he hoped for a release in the first half of 2025, meaning we might not have to wait long before this long-gestating project finally premieres.
Millie Bobby Brown, undoubtedly the First Lady of Netflix, joins forces with Chris Pratt for the Russo Brothers’ sci-fi adventure The Electric State. Very loosely based on the eponymous 2018 graphic novel and set in a dystopian 1994, the film stars Brown as Michelle, a young woman approached by a robot who claims to have information about her missing brother. Alongside Brown and Pratt, the film also stars Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, and Giancarlo Esposito.
Although the Russo Brothers have been pretty hit-or-miss following their stint in the MCU, The Electric State seems right up their alley. However, the changes they made to the story have already attracted a negative reaction from fans, who expected a more straightforward adaptation of the source material. Brown will have a busy slate with Netflix in 2025, with this promising film premiering on March 14, plus the fifth and final season of Stranger Things coming out sometime after.
In 2019, Noah Baumbach scored one of his greatest critical hits with Marriage Story for Netflix. While the follow-up, White Noise, was less successful, the director is back with the streamer for Jay Kelly, which might be his ticket back to the Oscars. Co-written by the ever-underrated Emily Mortimer, the film will star an ensemble cast, including Oscar winners George Clooney, Laura Dern and Jim Broadbent alongside Adam Sandler, Billy Krudup, and Riley Keough.
Not much is known about the plot, but we can expect another introspective dramedy based on Baumbach’s previous work. A more international story can also be expected, as the film was shot in New York, London, and Tuscany. Netflix will probably want to position this as an awards contender, so a premiere in the fall of 2025 makes sense. With such a talented ensemble and director, Jay Kelly has the potential to be one of the streamer’s most acclaimed efforts of the year.
Peaky Blinders ended in 2022. Ever since, rumors have been circulating about a film adaptation that would continue the story of Tommy Shelby and his criminal family. Finally, in 2024, show creator Steven Knight confirmed a movie in the works, with Oscar winner Cillian Murphy reprising his role as Tommy Shelby. Stephen Graham, Sophie Rundle, and Packy Lee will also reprise their roles, with Rebecca Ferguson and Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan joining the cast.
Little is known about The Immortal Man‘s plot other than that it will take place years after the show’s conclusion. However, Peaky Blinders remains such a beloved show that it’s hard to imagine this movie not doing well. Murphy and Knight’s return, plus the promise of more stylish violence, are plenty to compel audiences to tune into this long-awaited movie. There’s no date of release, but considering it wrapped filming in December 2024, it’s safe to expect The Immortal Man at some point this year.

Unsurprisingly, plot details are still under wraps, but we know both Brolin and O’Connor will play priests. Considering the huge success of both previous entries in this modern series, it’s safe to say Wake Up Dead Man is among the most highly anticipated movies of the year, not only from Netflix but overall. Knives Out and Glass Onion were both November releases, so chances are Wake Up Dead Man will follow suit and premiere the same month following an awards-friendly debut on TIFF.
Frankenstein will continue Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro’s collaboration with Netflix, yet another adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic work of Gothic fiction. Oscar Isaac will star as Doctor Victor Frankenstein, with Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein’s monster and Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, and Oscar winner Christoph Waltz in undisclosed roles.
Knowing del Toro, fans can expect a faithful adaptation of Shelley’s classic with a political edge. Netflix will surely want to position this film as a major awards contender, so a late 2025 premiere makes the most sense, meaning fans will have to wait a bit until they see it. However, the wait will surely be worth it; del Toro is one of the most prolific and acclaimed directors working today, and his horror sensibilities are a perfect match for Frankenstein. Thus, this horror story is not only the most highly anticipated Netflix original of the year but arguably the most anticipated movie of 2025 overall.

Many fans want to know why it is taking so long for The Batman Part II to be released considering it has been quite a while since the first film premiered.
Matt Reeves’ The Batman was one of the biggest comic book movie releases of the 2020s so far. It introduced DC fans to Robert Pattinson’s version of Bruce Wayne and Batman while also giving viewers a more detective-like take on the Caped Crusader.
A sequel was announced just one month after the first film premiered in theaters on March 4, 2022, meaning it has been in the works for a while. So, there have been a few issues getting the upcoming title off the ground, to say the least.
Unfortunately, anytime a piece of news has surfaced regarding The Batman Part II recently, it has not been promising (except for when Reeves revealed a plot detail about the upcoming movie).
For example, it was just announced on December 27, 2024, that the upcoming film had been delayed an entire year. After previously being set to hit theaters on October 2, 2026, The Batman Part II is now slated to premiere on October 1, 2027.
This is not the first delay the movie has suffered. Originally, The Batman 2 was going to debut in October 2025.
However, it was delayed in March 2024 from that initial date to October 2, 2026. So, the film suffered two major delays in the same year, but it seems as though things may be on the right track now.
DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn already confirmed that he has a strict plan for upcoming movies under the DC umbrella.
In general, Gunn publicly confirmed that no movie or project will receive the green light and go into pre-production before a script is completely finished and finalized.
As of December 27, 2024, the script for The Batman Part II was not complete.
Gunn revealed in a Threads post that the script not being finished was the main reason for the one-year delay.
Unfortunately, Gunn also added that “no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write,” so it is impossible to know how far along the script is at this point:
“Sure. Yes, it is true. The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script (those of you who follow me here probably know that already). Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.”
Rumors have been swirling about why the script is taking so long to write. One of those rumors, coming from @ViewerAnon via X (formerly Twitter), indicates that “there are reasons it’s taken so long,” and it isn’t “just procrastinating” from Reeves:
“Don’t be too hard on Reeves. Things are going on. There are reasons it’s taken so long for ‘THE BATMAN PART II’s’ script to be finished, he’s not just procrastinating. Promise.”
One of the most promising pieces of news to come recently regarding The Batman Part II was Reeves’ own words at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards Show.
In a quick interview with Deadline on the red carpet, Reeves confirmed that The Batman 2 would begin filming at some point in 2025.
Specifically, Reeves stated “[they were] going to be shooting this year:”
“I can tell you that we’re going to be shooting this year and that we’re excited about it. I can’t really tell you anything about it.”
So, while The Batman 2 recently suffered another delay, it at least seems as though the script is coming along and filming will be underway by the end of the year.
As mentioned, The Batman Part II (read more about the upcoming movie’s massive cast here) has been delayed multiple times. Gunn revealed that it would likely take two years from the beginning of pre-production until the end of post-production.
So, assuming that is true, that would mean the script would obviously need to be finished sometime before October 1. However, in reality, it would likely need to be finished at least a few months before October for everything to not be rushed.
It seems as though Reeves is confident filming will begin this year. His comments at the Golden Globes were optimistic, so the script is likely in or near the final stages.
Anything is possible, and delays could always happen, but it seems like The Batman 2 is well on its way to going into pre-production soon.
Yes, it will have been over five years since the release of the first film when the second comes out, but at least it will be made (unlike some films that could be entirely canceled).
The Batman is streaming on Max, and The Batman Part II is expected to be released on October 1, 2027.
