  • Kristen Bell’s 10 Best Movies And TV Shows

The best Kristen Bell movies and TV shows demonstrate how her unique abilities as a comedic actor have allowed her to cement a solid career and celebrated reputation in the genre. Born in Michigan in 1980, Kristen Bell has been an active performer since 1992 in theatrical productions, though she wouldn’t find herself in front of a camera until 1998 (albeit in an uncredited film role in the comedy-drama Polish Wedding).

Following this, Bell spent several more years on the stage, finally finding her way back to the small screen in 2003 in FX’s The Shield. It was 2004 that she got her big break thanks to landing the titular lead role in Veronica Mars, and from there her career exploded. The best Kristen Bell movies and TV shows may mostly be comedies, but she’s far from limited to one genre, and has displayed her capabilities across a variety of roles on both the big and small screens.

The overwhelming majority of the best Kristen Bell movies and TV shows are comedies, as it’s her ability to portray funny characters that has defined her career. This is why 2006’s Pulse, from director Jim Sonzero (with a script co-written by the legendary Wes Craven), stands out, as it’s one of her rare ventures into the realms of horror. It’s also noteworthy as it’s one of the first feature films in which Bell was cast in a central role.

Adopting the Kiyoshi Kurosawa J-horror of the same name, Pulse sees Kristen Bell’s Mattie Webber caught up in a series of strange supernatural phenomena that sees spirits attempting to return to the world of the living through the internet. While the movie itself was panned by critics, Bell herself gave an incredibly strong performance, and so, Pulse more than warrants its entry among the best Kristen Bell movies due to it showing her range is much wider than comedy.

The Woman In The House Across The Street From The Girl In The Window (2022)

    Kristen Bell Plays Anna Whitaker

Kristen Bell has had several successful collaborations with Netflix, such as 2024’s Nobody Wants This. Among them is the miniseries The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (also commonly known as TWITHATSFTGITW). The dark comedy sees Kristen Bell take the lead role as Anna, a woman struggling with mental health and hallucinations who comes to convince herself that she’s witnessed a murder.

The show parodies many aspects of the kinds of thrillers and true-crime shows that Netflix has built a reputation for creating, and Bell manages to make the character of Anna incredibly funny without making her over-the-top or unbelievable. The comedic elements of TWITHATSFTGITW work incredibly well, though it never loses its central mystery either. It’s a series where nothing is as it seems, and Bell’s performance as Anna ties everything together incredibly well.

2021’s Queenpins, the comedy from writer-directors Aron Gaudet and Git Pullapilly, stars Kristen Bell as Connie Kaminski. Kaminski is a former Olympic speed walker frustrated with her mundane life as a mother and homemaker. However, after receiving a coupon for free cereal following a complaint to the company that produces them, she and her friend JoJo (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) concoct a scam to turn the corporate practice into a lucrative money-making scheme.

Kristen Bell gives a laugh-out-loud performance as Connie, and it’s this that marks Queenpins as one of the best of her more recent movies. It also stands out among the best Kristen Bell films as it shows how she’s matured as a performer, and how suited she is to playing older, middle-aged characters as her live-action appearances enter a new career phase. However, while it’s a comedic venture, Bell also gets to display her aptitude for more emotional moments thanks to Connie’s attempts to conceive through IVF and her trauma following a miscarriage.

At the time of writing, Kristen Bell has been shortlisted for several awards thanks to her performance in 2024’s Nobody Wants This, including a Critics Choice Award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy. The Netflix romantic comedy series stars Bell as Joanne, an agnostic sex and dating podcaster who finds herself romantically drawn to a Rabbi, Adam Brody’s Noah Roklov.

Season 2 of Nobody Wants This has been greenlit by Netflix thanks to the show’s high level of critical acclaim, and season 1 of the series currently sits with a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While it currently doesn’t have the cultural impact as some of Kristen Bell’s other TV shows like Veronica Mars, The Good Place, or Gossip Girls, future seasons of Nobody Wants This could change this.

The teen drama Gossip Girl ran on The CW from 2007 to 2012 and remains one of the most successful, and culturally impactful, original shows the network ever put out. While she didn’t appear on-screen, Kristen Bell was an essential ingredient and member of the Gossip Girl cast. Every episode would be peppered with narration from the enigmatic Gossip Girl, an unknown student at an Upper East Side high school who holds nothing back in their quest to ensure every piece of dirty laundry the students want to hide is aired publicly.

Kristen Bell provides the voice for Gossip Girl, narrating every episode. Bell is a celebrated voice actor known just as much for her vocal skills as she is for her live-action performances, and she brings these abilities to Gossip Girl with incredible results. This cements the series as one of the best Kristen Bell TV shows. She also made a cameo in the final episode as a fictionalized version of herself.

2016’s Bad Moms comes from directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, and features an ensemble cast of celebrated comedians such as Mila Kunis and Kathryn Hahn. Joining them to make up the lead trio is Kristen Bell as Kiki Moore, a stay-at-home mother of four. As the title suggests, Bad Moms is a comedy that focuses on a group of mothers who rebel against the expectations of society and their spouses – and it makes for one of the most hilarious roles of the latter stage of Kristen Bell’s career.

While it’s Mila Kunis as Amy who takes the central focus of the plot, Kristen Bell’s Kiki is arguably the funnier character. Not only does she share incredible chemistry with both Kunis as Amy and Kathryn Hahn as Carla, but her portrayal of the frazzled and beyond-stressed Kiki is brimming with authenticity – making it one of the best comedy movies Bell has so far appeared in and landing hers a nomination for Favorite Comedic Movie Actress at the 2016 People’s Choice Awards.

    Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2009)

    Kristen Bell Plays Sarah Marshall

2009’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall has become problematic in the years since its release thanks to being led by the now-controversial figure Russell Brand, but this doesn’t stop it from being counted as one of the best Kristen Bell movies. In the raunchy rom-com, Kristen Bell plays the titular Sarah Marshall, the ex-girlfriend of Jason Segel’s heartbroken composer Peter Bretter.

Peter decides to go on a vacation to forget about Sarah, only to discover – much to his horror – that she’s staying at the same resort with her new boyfriend, the rockstar Aldous Snow (Brand). Kristen Bell made the character of Sarah laugh-out-loud hilarious, and was nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy and Breakout Female Star at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards for her performance, alongside a joint-nomination for Best WTF Moment alongside Jason Segel at the MTV Movie Awards the same year.

    3

    The Good Place (2016-2020)

    Kristen Bell Plays Eleanor Shellstrop

Running on NBC from 2016-2020, The Good Place isn’t only one of the best Kristen Bell TV shows, but it also stands as arguably her most surreal. The fantasy-comedy series focuses on a group of recently deceased people who find themselves in the titular ‘Good Place’, which they’re led to believe is Heaven by the architect of their utopia, Michael (Ted Danson). Kristen Bell gives a hilarious performance as Eleanor Shellstrop, who realizes she’s ended up in a posthumous paradise due to an administrative error.

However, all is not what it seems, and Eleanor (along with the rest of the characters) finds out the Good Place may not be so good after all. The show was highly acclaimed, as was Kristen Bell’s performance. Bell was nominated for a slew of awards for The Good Place, including a Golden Globe nomination in 2019 for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy.

Kristen Bell’s career has had several stages, and her first breakout role came when she took the titular lead in the UPN (and, eventually, The CW) teen noir mystery series Veronica Mars. Playing the young investigator brought Bell some of her earliest accolades, including a nomination for Best Actress on Television at the 2005 Saturn Awards, and Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series at the Satellite Awards the same year. She later went on to win a Saturn Award in the same category the following year.

As the titular lead character, Kristen Bell was the central focal point for the many twisting narratives that kept viewers hooked on Veronica Mars throughout all four seasons, and the 2014 movie spinoff. While she’s taken on many roles since, Veronica Mars remains the best Kristen Bell TV show so far, and one of the strongest performances of her career on both the big and small screens.

Of all the best Kristen Bell movies and TV shows, none have had as significant a cultural impact as 2013’s Frozen (and, by extension, 2019 sequel Frozen 2). Alongside Idina Menzel as Elsa, Kristen Bell voiced one of the most iconic Disney princesses of all time – Anna, who braves the snowy wasteland created by her sister to save both her and the kingdom of Arendelle.

Not only did Kristen Bell give a hilarious performance as Anna, she also sang some of the memorable musical numbers that ensured Frozen has become the most successful Disney franchise of the 21st century so far (such as “Do You Want To Build A Snowman”). No character the actor has portrayed so far has become anywhere near as instantly recognizable, and it’s this and her performance that cement Frozen as the best Kristen Bell movie or TV show.

  • Barbarian’s Zach Cregger is rebooting the Resident Evil movies

Multiple studios are reportedly in a bidding war for a film reboot of the Resident Evil movies, THR reports, and it has less to do with the rise of successful video game-based film projects than the guy who’s trying to bring the series back to theaters: Barbarian director Zach Cregger.

Cregger—whose career path we can’t help but think of as being in the Jordan Peele mold, having gone from being a founding member of sketch group The Whitest Kids U’ Know to writing and directing the low-budget horror darling—is currently the belle of the Hollywood ball, apparently, with at least four studios lining up to try to give him their money for this latest film. (It probably helps that Barbarian made roughly ten times its budget in theaters in 2022, and his upcoming film Weapons is reportedly testing well ahead of a release next year.) He’s attached to both write and direct the Resident Evil movie.

The Resident Evil films have always operated in sort of a weird niche, in Hollywood terms. From a certain metric, they’re one of the most successful game-to-movie projects of all time, with Paul W.S. Anderson keeping budgets low and box office returns comfortable for the six movies he made with Milla Jovavich from 2002 to 2017. (The prequel film directed by Johannes Roberts in 2021 flopped, admittedly, but it was released deep into the pandemic lockdowns.) But it’s also a fact that the franchise, despite being one of the biggest horror gaming brands, period, has never gotten what anyone would call a really good horror movie, with Anderson, at best, delivering serviceable and goofy action junk food. Cregger, whose Barbarian possessed a knack for genuinely shocking images and turns and a steadily building sense of tension, might be able to do something actually cool with Capcom’s horror sandbox. Put us down as at least modestly excited.

Barbarian’s Zach Cregger is rebooting the Resident Evil movies

Exciting news for fans of the Resident Evil franchise – Zach Cregger, one half of the comedy duo Barbarian, is set to reboot the popular video game adaptations.

Cregger, known for his work on The Whitest Kids U’ Know and as a writer on The Inbetweeners, is no stranger to comedy and action. With his unique blend of humor and storytelling, he is sure to bring a fresh and exciting take on the beloved Resident Evil series.

While details are still scarce, fans can expect Cregger to inject his signature style into the reboot, offering a new perspective on the classic survival horror storyline. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the games or just looking for a thrilling new cinematic experience, this reboot is sure to be one to watch.

Stay tuned for more updates on Barbarian’s Zach Cregger’s reboot of the Resident Evil movies – it’s bound to be an action-packed adventure unlike anything we’ve seen before.

  • Gary Oldman’s 24-Year-Old Cold War Thriller Is 1 of the Best Spy Movies Ever Made

The spy thriller is a popular genre with countless films, plenty of major hits, and several long-running franchises. Secret agents like Jason Bourne and Mission: Impossible’s Ethan Hunt are major American action heroes and, of course, James Bond remains the most iconic British spy. In 2011, however, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy gave audiences a different type of spy drama and a protagonist that easily rivals these other classics. The film is certainly slower and less action-packed than other movies in the genre and Garry Oldman’s George Smiley isn’t tough or suave like Bourne or Bond but, over two decades later, it’s still one of the best spy thrillers of all time.

Set primarily in London in the early 1970s, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy focuses on the inner workings of British intelligence and counter-intelligence during the Cold War. Garry Oldman stars as George Smiley, a former senior official in “The Circus,” a fictionalized version of British MI6. Forced to retire in disgrace after a mission ends in disaster, Smiley is secretly brought back into service to hunt a mole in the Circus. The narrative that unfolds reveals the dark world of espionage and the paranoia of the Cold War.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy Priotizes Realism Over Action

Gary Oldman plays Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
    Image via Canal+

    • The author of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, John le Carré, wrote over two dozen novels, nearly all of which are spy thrillers.
    • Several of his novels have been adapted into movies and TV shows, including The Constant Gardener and The Tailor of Panama.
    • Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was previously adapted into a miniseries by the BBC in 1979.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy certainly had fewer shootouts and fight scenes than many spy thrillers but, for fans of realism, it had something much better. The Cold War drama is a rare spy story that explores the reality of espionage, giving fans a glimpse of how intelligence gathering and analysis actually unfolds. In doing so, it delivers a much more cerebral and slow-paced narrative that demands attention and careful examination by its viewers.

Unlike the James Bond films, the star of this British thriller is a middle-aged civil servant and intelligence analyst. The climactic moments of the movie don’t involve exciting fights, but revelations uncovered through careful study of documents and clever subterfuge. Further, the spy game is not depicted as exciting and glamorous but as dark, dangerous, and depressing. Analysts like Smiley face constant uncertainty and betrayal and the agents who actually carry out the more violent elements of the trade are looked down upon as dirty and corrupted.

This Explosive Peacock Original Is One of the Best Recent Spy Shows

In the great streaming race, Peacock has managed to acquire an explosive original show that stands out as one of the best recent spy series.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy shows fans that real spy work is far from flashy. The film begins with an operation going wrong, leading to a British agent’s capture and torture. While he’s eventually freed in a prisoner exchange, subsequent scenes show that his experience has left him traumatized and jaded. Other former intelligence officers express similar feelings. The few instances in the film where individuals perform the more popularized spy actions like stealing documents are depicted as nerve-wracking rather than sexy or thrilling.

Far from being boring, however, this more subdued style serves a story that is all the more suspenseful and engrossing for its high stakes and grounding in reality. By the end of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Smiley and his team have uncovered a conspiracy that threatens the heart of British intelligence and could tip the scales in the Cold War.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy Offers a Rare Look at the United Kingdom During the Cold War

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is also notable for its portrayal of the British perspective of the Cold War and English society in the 1970s. While James Bond gave the world a classic British spy who regularly went up against the Soviet Union, his stories were always more fantastical, offering little insight into the reality of Cold War Britain. Meanwhile, many of the more authentic spy films of the past tended to focus on the American and Soviet points of view. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, on the other hand, spends a great deal of time specifically exploring the world-shaping conflict from the side of the United Kingdom.

In particular, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy depicts British spies as being frustrated with their American counterparts. Feeling that they are not taken as seriously and kept out of the loop, a major element of the plot revolves around efforts by the Circus to get the U.S. government to begin sharing its own intelligence with them again. Further, the movie depicts its intelligence officers, and their organizational culture, as having been shaped by their experience during World War II.

How Citadel Uses a Classic Spy Thriller Trope to Subvert Power Dynamics

Amazon Prime’s Citadel, featuring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, takes the spy thriller genre to new heights with its use of tropes.

While, except for the Pearl Harbor attack, the Second World War was something that happened far away for Americans, it struck the heart of the United Kingdom. Many British spies in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy are veterans of World War II and carry both pride and scars (physical and psychological) from that time. Some characters express sadness that the Cold War is a more ambiguous, less noble conflict than their war against Nazi Germany. It’s also suggested that the mole who betrays British Intelligence was motivated, in part, by ways in which his country and the West in general have changed since the war ended.

Finally, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy also touches on the prejudices of the time. A rigid class system that privileges those born into wealth and status is shown to infect the British government, including its intelligence services. A gay character is forced to end his relationship out of fear that his sexuality will be discovered and used against him. All of these moments come together to paint an intriguing picture of the Cold War from an often-overlooked perspective.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy Features Amazing Performances

John Hurt has his arms spread in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
    StudioCanal

    • Many of John le Carré’s characters are based on real people involved in espionage during the Cold War.
    • Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was inspired by the real-life defection of British spy Kim Philby who defected to the Soviet Union.
    • Like the character George Smiley, le Carré, who himself worked for Britain’s MI6, saw his own career come to an end after Philby’s betrayal was discovered.

In addition to an amazing story and writing, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy benefited from phenomenal performances by current and future stars. Garry Oldman led the cast as protagonist George Smiley, depicting a thoughtful man, driven by loyalty and saddened by betrayal from both his friends and family. His colleagues and chief suspects, meanwhile, were skillfully portrayed by Colin Firth, Ciarán Hinds, David Dencik, and Toby Jones. Firth, Hinds, and Jones were already established actors in English-language media while Dencik was accomplished in Swedish cinema with Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, marking his breakthrough into English-language movies.

Along with these established stars, John Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch joined the cast just as their film careers were taking off. Hardy, who plays a spy who does the dirty work of British intelligence, had already had plenty of supporting roles but would soon go on to star in films like Mad Max: Fury Road and Venom. Cumberbatch, playing a spy handler who allies with Smiley, had just begun his time as Sherlock Holmes on the BBC’s adaptation of the detective’s stories and was on the cusp of becoming a major movie star. All of these performers gave excellent performances that enhanced the story and made Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy one of the greatest spy dramas of all time.

Gary Oldman’s 24-Year-Old Cold War Thriller Is 1 of the Best Spy Movies Ever Made

Gary Oldman’s performance in the 1997 film “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” is nothing short of extraordinary. Based on John le Carré’s novel of the same name, the movie follows retired British intelligence officer George Smiley as he is called back into action to uncover a Soviet mole within the ranks of MI6.

Oldman’s portrayal of Smiley is subtle yet powerful, capturing the character’s intelligence, restraint, and determination with precision. His performance is supported by a stellar cast that includes Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, and Benedict Cumberbatch, all of whom deliver outstanding performances in their respective roles.

The film’s slow-burn pace and intricate plot may not be for everyone, but for those who appreciate a well-crafted spy thriller, “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” is a must-see. • Where to watch the 10 Oscar-nominated movies for best picture

    CNN
     —

As luck would have it, this year’s crop of best picture Oscar nominees – ten movies, to be exact – are largely available for viewing from the comfort of your own home.

So, while the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences chases down the required “paperwork” to determine which producers should actually be nominated for trophies for many of the films, behold a list of where and how you can enjoy each title, below:

Alternatively, it can be purchased for streaming on Prime Video or Apple TV.

    Adrien Brody in “The Brutalist.”

  • 7 most anticipated Netflix movies of 2025, ranked

Netflix has one of the best movie libraries in streaming, if not the best. Often considered the king of streamers, Netflix has a strong collection of pictures, both original and acquired, that make it the ultimate destination for streaming fans looking to spend a night in. Netflix has also become a giant thanks to its constant flow of content, premiering a new movie every week and producing some very high-profile projects from major names in entertainment.

2025 won’t be any different, as Netflix has several major movies coming out over the next twelve months. From auteur-driven remakes of classics of horror to ambitious adaptations of sci-fi novels to long-awaited sequels to major successes, Netflix’s library for 2025 is full of modern hits in the making. These movies will all surely attract major crowds, and some might even become major players at the 2026 awards season, ensuring Netflix’s place as the ultimate leader in the streaming space.

    7. Havoc

Tom Hardy firing a rifle in Havoc.
    Netflix

Tom Hardy is one of the most accomplished actors of his generation, and everything he does comes with a degree of anticipation and prestige. However, Havoc is slightly more interesting, as it was initially shot in 2021 and has been in something of a limbo ever since it wrapped. Delays concerning the 2023 strikes and scheduling issues, plus reshoots last year, meant that the film went far too long without seeing the light of day.

Directed by The Raid‘s Gareth Evans, Havoc follows a detective entering the criminal world to save a politician’s son after a drug deal gone wrong. The supporting cast includes Oscar winner Forest Whitaker and Emmy nominee Timothy Olyphant, making it an even hotter ticket. It’s still unknown when it will premiere, but Evans stated last year he hoped for a release in the first half of 2025, meaning we might not have to wait long before this long-gestating project finally premieres.

    6. The Electric State

A girl and two men stand and stare in "The Electric State."
    Paul Abell/Netflix / Netflix

Millie Bobby Brown, undoubtedly the First Lady of Netflix, joins forces with Chris Pratt for the Russo Brothers’ sci-fi adventure The Electric State. Very loosely based on the eponymous 2018 graphic novel and set in a dystopian 1994, the film stars Brown as Michelle, a young woman approached by a robot who claims to have information about her missing brother. Alongside Brown and Pratt, the film also stars Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, and Giancarlo Esposito.

Although the Russo Brothers have been pretty hit-or-miss following their stint in the MCU, The Electric State seems right up their alley. However, the changes they made to the story have already attracted a negative reaction from fans, who expected a more straightforward adaptation of the source material. Brown will have a busy slate with Netflix in 2025, with this promising film premiering on March 14, plus the fifth and final season of Stranger Things coming out sometime after.

    5. Jay Kelly

    George Clooney in Tomorrowland.
    Walt Disney Pictures

In 2019, Noah Baumbach scored one of his greatest critical hits with Marriage Story for Netflix. While the follow-up, White Noise, was less successful, the director is back with the streamer for Jay Kelly, which might be his ticket back to the Oscars. Co-written by the ever-underrated Emily Mortimer, the film will star an ensemble cast, including Oscar winners George Clooney, Laura Dern and Jim Broadbent alongside Adam Sandler, Billy Krudup, and Riley Keough.

Not much is known about the plot, but we can expect another introspective dramedy based on Baumbach’s previous work. A more international story can also be expected, as the film was shot in New York, London, and Tuscany. Netflix will probably want to position this as an awards contender, so a premiere in the fall of 2025 makes sense. With such a talented ensemble and director, Jay Kelly has the potential to be one of the streamer’s most acclaimed efforts of the year.

    4. The Immortal Man

    The cast of Peaky Blinders.
    BBC/Netflix

Peaky Blinders ended in 2022. Ever since, rumors have been circulating about a film adaptation that would continue the story of Tommy Shelby and his criminal family. Finally, in 2024, show creator Steven Knight confirmed a movie in the works, with Oscar winner Cillian Murphy reprising his role as Tommy Shelby. Stephen Graham, Sophie Rundle, and Packy Lee will also reprise their roles, with Rebecca Ferguson and Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan joining the cast.

Little is known about The Immortal Man‘s plot other than that it will take place years after the show’s conclusion. However, Peaky Blinders remains such a beloved show that it’s hard to imagine this movie not doing well. Murphy and Knight’s return, plus the promise of more stylish violence, are plenty to compel audiences to tune into this long-awaited movie. There’s no date of release, but considering it wrapped filming in December 2024, it’s safe to expect The Immortal Man at some point this year.

    3. Happy Gilmore 2

Adam Sandler as Happy Gilmore during a golf match in Happy Gilmore 2.
    Netflix

Happy Gilmore is one of Adam Sandler’s most beloved movies, so it was always going to get a sequel. The actor is famous for its long-term partnership with Netflix, and Happy Gilmore 2 will be another entry into their ever-expanding collaboration. Alongside Sandler, original stars Christopher McDonald and multi-Emmy winner Julie Bowen will also return, joined by newcomers like Bad Bunny and Margaret Qualley.

Like most Netflix movies set to premiere this year, plot details for Happy Gilmore 2 are scarce. However, audiences can expect the familiar brand of humor that has made Sandler such a massive star, plus a collection of cameos that will include several pro-golfers and musicians like Eminem. Sandler has carved himself a comfortable place among Netflix’s biggest stars, and Happy Gilmore 2 will only increase his lucrative relationship with the streamer.

    2. Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery

Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc looking to his right in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.
    Netflix

Ryan Johnson returns to the whodunit world with Wake Up Dead Man, the third entry in his Knives Out series following 2019’s Knives Out and 2022’s Glass Onion. Daniel Craig returns as detective Benoit Blanc, this time joined by a massive cast including Oscar nominees Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Jeremy Renner, and Thomas Haden Church. Also starring are Josh O’Connor, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Mila Kunis, and Kerry Washington.

Unsurprisingly, plot details are still under wraps, but we know both Brolin and O’Connor will play priests. Considering the huge success of both previous entries in this modern series, it’s safe to say Wake Up Dead Man is among the most highly anticipated movies of the year, not only from Netflix but overall. Knives Out and Glass Onion were both November releases, so chances are Wake Up Dead Man will follow suit and premiere the same month following an awards-friendly debut on TIFF.

    1. Frankenstein

A group of Victorian men looking ahead in Netflix's Frankenstein.
    Netflix

Frankenstein will continue Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro’s collaboration with Netflix, yet another adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic work of Gothic fiction. Oscar Isaac will star as Doctor Victor Frankenstein, with Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein’s monster and Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, and Oscar winner Christoph Waltz in undisclosed roles.

Knowing del Toro, fans can expect a faithful adaptation of Shelley’s classic with a political edge. Netflix will surely want to position this film as a major awards contender, so a late 2025 premiere makes the most sense, meaning fans will have to wait a bit until they see it. However, the wait will surely be worth it; del Toro is one of the most prolific and acclaimed directors working today, and his horror sensibilities are a perfect match for Frankenstein. Thus, this horror story is not only the most highly anticipated Netflix original of the year but arguably the most anticipated movie of 2025 overall.

    1. "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever"
Fans are eagerly awaiting the sequel to the groundbreaking superhero film, which is set to explore the legacy of the late Chadwick Boseman’s iconic character, T’Challa.

    2. "Stranger Things 5"
The beloved sci-fi series is returning for its fifth season, promising more supernatural adventures and 80s nostalgia.

    3. "The Witcher: Blood Origin"
This prequel to the hit fantasy series will delve into the origins of the Witcher universe, exploring the history of the first Witcher and the creation of the monsters they fight.

    4. "Avatar: The Last Airbender"
Based on the popular animated series, this live-action adaptation is highly anticipated by fans who are hoping for a faithful retelling of the beloved story.

    5. "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair"
The next installment in the Narnia film series, this adaptation of the classic novel promises to bring more magic and adventure to the screen.

    6. "The Umbrella Academy: Season 4"
The dysfunctional superhero family is returning for another season of time-traveling shenanigans and world-saving missions.

    7. "The Kissing Booth 4"
Fans of the teen romantic comedy series can’t wait to see how the love triangle between Elle, Noah, and Marco plays out in the fourth installment.

Back in Action is the next big Netflix original action movie which follows a married couple whose children are shocked to learn are retired secret agents. When their old agency begins targeting them, they go on the run with their family. Multiple chases, fight scenes, and betrayals ensue, making for one of the most thrilling adventures of their lives.

While the premise may sound like any number of other similar movies, Back in Action is particularly exciting for the talent working on the film. The cast includes Cameron Diaz in her first film role in over a decade and Jamie Foxx, who infamously suffered a stroke during filming. Both actors are “back in action” as the lead players in this Netflix original film, but they aren’t alone. This also marks the first film from director Seth Gordon in almost seven years, with his last cinematic project being 2017’s Baywatch.

The Electric State Is The Russo Brothers’ Next Big Movie

    Release Date: March 14

The Electric State is a new Netflix original movie set in an alternate 1994 where humans and robots share the world. Loosely based on Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel of the same name, The Electric State will feature Netflix’s resident superstar Millie Bobby Brown as she embarks on a daring cross-country mission to rescue her missing brother. Along the way, she teams up with Chris Pratt’s Keats, a drifter who aims to help her on her quest.

In addition to its inventive premise, The Electric State includes an all-star creative team that should sound familiar to fans of superhero movies. The upcoming film reunites directors Anthony and Joe Russo with screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. This team is responsible for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, which are often considered to be four of the best films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie will also include several stars from those films, including Anthony Mackie and Chris Pratt. With a powerhouse creative team like this, The Electric State is a must-watch offering from Netflix as it continues to build its original movie library.

A sequel to 2020’s surprise hit, the upcoming film is set to follow the continuing adventures of Andromache of Scythia and her elite team. Like the original movie, The Old Guard 2 will adapt elements from Greg Rucka’s original comic book series. Charlize Theron is confirmed to reprise her role, with several other cast members from the original movie also set to return.

While little is known about The Old Guard 2, fans are especially excited to see where Netflix takes the franchise next. The original movie was a surprise hit for the streamer, earning mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences. The sequel can plunge further into the action, leaving the worldbuilding and exposition of its predecessor behind to deliver a riveting second entry in a burgeoning franchise.

The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep is a new anime spinoff of Netflix’s hit The Witcher series. The film will see Anya Chalotra return as Yennefer and Joey Batey return as Jaskier.

Although The Witcher fandom is currently in chaos after the announcement that Henry Cavill will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth in Season 4, Sirens of the Deep looks to bridge these two different eras of the series with an animated adventure that all viewers will love. Doug Cockle voices Geralt in the upcoming movie, reprising his role from the original video game and thereby giving audiences more reason to rally behind this animated venture.

Happy Gilmore 2 Brings Back Adam Sandler’s Most Iconic Character

    Release Date: 2025

A sequel to a hit Adam Sandler movie seems surprisingly rare, yet Happy Gilmore is bucking this trend with its upcoming sequel, which is set to hit Netflix later this year. A follow-up to Sandler’s iconic 1996 sports film, Happy Gilmore 2 will pick up nearly three decades after audiences last saw the eponymous golfer, who seems to have lost his signature short temper–but who knows for how long?

Adam Sandler’s previous partnerships with Netflix have mostly been successful, with Murder Mystery and its sequel standing out as fan favorites. Moreover, the comedian’s hesitance to make sequels to his hit films (with the rare exceptions of Murder Mystery 2 and Grown Ups 2) makes Happy Gilmore 2 all the more exciting. Fans can’t wait to reunite with Sandler and a returning cast of familiar faces from the original movie.

The Immortal Man Continues the Story of Peaky Blinders

    Release Date: 2025

The Immortal Man is an upcoming movie set to continue the Peaky Blinders franchise after the hit crime series came to an end in 2022 with its sixth season. Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy is set to reprise his iconic role as Thomas Shelby in the upcoming film, with several other key cast members joining him, as well as several new cast members, including Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth, and Barry Keoghan.

Although very little is known about The Immortal Man, it is undoubtedly one of Netflix’s most exciting releases in the coming year. Peaky Blinders is known for its impeccable writing and acting, which bodes well for the film follow-up, which can elevate the stakes of the original series while continuing its intriguing storyline. With a stacked cast and an avid fan following, everything is lining up in favor of The Immortal Man.

Frankenstein Brings Together an Iconic Director and a Terrific Cast

    Release Date: 2025

Guillermo del Toro appears in front of different versions of Frankenstein

Although Netflix has sometimes been known to throw money at A-list actors to appear in subpar action films, the streamer also delivers several creative films worthy of accolades. For 2025, the most exciting of these artsy films is Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, which will deliver a fresh take on Mary Shelly’s iconic horror novel. The film will star Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein’s Monster, Oscar Isaac as Dr. Victor Frankenstein, and Mia Goth as the Bride of Frankenstein.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is the third installment of Rian Johnson’s hit murder-mystery franchise. Following the success of the original film, Netflix purchased the rights to the Knives Out franchise, greenlighting two sequels to be released exclusively on the streaming service. Of course, Daniel Craig will also return to play the iconic detective Benoit Blanc as he gets to the bottom of another twisty mystery. Rian Johnson has developed a reputation for successfully subverting audience expectations, single-handedly reviving the murder mystery genre. Cunk on Life (Jan. 2)

Idiotic British program presenter Philomena Cunk (Diane Morgan) returns to baffle academics with her buffoonery in Cunk on Life, the latest special from Black Mirror‘s Charlie Brooker. After musing about our planet in Cunk on Earth, which Netflix aired in 2022, Cunk will ponder the meaning of life while asking scholars some of the dumbest questions they’ve ever heard. Cunk on Earth was fantastic; this should also be a hoot. [Trailer]

    American Primeval (Jan. 9)

Macho director Peter Berg brings his macho sensibility to the Wild West with the incredibly macho American Primeval, a Western showing how dismal (and macho) the old American West once was. Seriously, this show is all about how horrible it was just to try to see tomorrow as the cowboys, Native Americans, the prospectors, the Mormons, the fugitives, the drunks, and even some naughty children all tried to get their piece of the pie. Expect shootings, stabbings, and scalpings, sometimes all at once. Betty Gilpin, Taylor Kitsch, and Shea Whigham star. [Trailer]

XO, Kitty Season 2 (Jan. 16)

The To All the Boys cinematic universe continues on with the second season of its TV spin-off XO, Kitty. Anna Cathcart returns as Kitty, the love-happy matchmaker who ran into a bunch of relationship problems in Season 1 as she enrolled in an international school in Korea. In Season 2, she’s single and ready to mingle! But only casually. Yeah right. [Teaser] [Everything to Know About XO, Kitty Season 2]

The Night Agent Season 2 (Jan. 23)

No one knew what The Night Agent was when it came out in 2023, but that’s not the case for Season 2. The debut season of Shawn Ryan’s thriller became Netflix’s seventh-most watched English-language show of all time, surprising just about everyone. Most details are under wraps, but in Season 2, FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), working toward becoming a full-fledged Night Agent, will travel to Thailand and New York City. [Teaser] [Everything to Know About The Night Agent Season 2]

  • Here’s Why The Batman 2 Movie’s Release Is Taking So Long

Many fans want to know why it is taking so long for The Batman Part II to be released considering it has been quite a while since the first film premiered.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman was one of the biggest comic book movie releases of the 2020s so far. It introduced DC fans to Robert Pattinson’s version of Bruce Wayne and Batman while also giving viewers a more detective-like take on the Caped Crusader.

A sequel was announced just one month after the first film premiered in theaters on March 4, 2022, meaning it has been in the works for a while. So, there have been a few issues getting the upcoming title off the ground, to say the least.

Why Has The Batman Part II Still Not Released?

Zoe Kravitz, Robert Pattinson, and Colin Farrell as Selina Kyle, Bruce Wayne, and the Penguin
    Warner Bros.

Unfortunately, anytime a piece of news has surfaced regarding The Batman Part II recently, it has not been promising (except for when Reeves revealed a plot detail about the upcoming movie).

For example, it was just announced on December 27, 2024, that the upcoming film had been delayed an entire year. After previously being set to hit theaters on October 2, 2026, The Batman Part II is now slated to premiere on October 1, 2027.

This is not the first delay the movie has suffered. Originally, The Batman 2 was going to debut in October 2025.

However, it was delayed in March 2024 from that initial date to October 2, 2026. So, the film suffered two major delays in the same year, but it seems as though things may be on the right track now.

DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn already confirmed that he has a strict plan for upcoming movies under the DC umbrella

In general, Gunn publicly confirmed that no movie or project will receive the green light and go into pre-production before a script is completely finished and finalized.

As of December 27, 2024, the script for The Batman Part II was not complete.

Gunn revealed in a Threads post that the script not being finished was the main reason for the one-year delay.

Unfortunately, Gunn also added that “no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write,” so it is impossible to know how far along the script is at this point:

“Sure. Yes, it is true. The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script (those of you who follow me here probably know that already). Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.”

Rumors have been swirling about why the script is taking so long to write. One of those rumors, coming from @ViewerAnon via X (formerly Twitter), indicates that “there are reasons it’s taken so long,” and it isn’t “just procrastinating” from Reeves:

“Don’t be too hard on Reeves. Things are going on. There are reasons it’s taken so long for ‘THE BATMAN PART II’s’ script to be finished, he’s not just procrastinating. Promise.”

One of the most promising pieces of news to come recently regarding The Batman Part II was Reeves’ own words at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards Show.

In a quick interview with Deadline on the red carpet, Reeves confirmed that The Batman 2 would begin filming at some point in 2025.

Specifically, Reeves stated “[they were] going to be shooting this year:”

“I can tell you that we’re going to be shooting this year and that we’re excited about it. I can’t really tell you anything about it.”

So, while The Batman 2 recently suffered another delay, it at least seems as though the script is coming along and filming will be underway by the end of the year.

Will The Batman Part II Be Delayed Again?

As mentioned, The Batman Part II (read more about the upcoming movie’s massive cast here) has been delayed multiple times. Gunn revealed that it would likely take two years from the beginning of pre-production until the end of post-production.

So, assuming that is true, that would mean the script would obviously need to be finished sometime before October 1. However, in reality, it would likely need to be finished at least a few months before October for everything to not be rushed.

It seems as though Reeves is confident filming will begin this year. His comments at the Golden Globes were optimistic, so the script is likely in or near the final stages.

Anything is possible, and delays could always happen, but it seems like The Batman 2 is well on its way to going into pre-production soon.

Yes, it will have been over five years since the release of the first film when the second comes out, but at least it will be made (unlike some films that could be entirely canceled).

The Batman is streaming on Max, and The Batman Part II is expected to be released on October 1, 2027.

Here’s Why The Batman 2 Movie’s Release Is Taking So Long

Fans of The Batman movie franchise have been eagerly awaiting news about the release of a sequel, but it seems like the wait is going to be a little longer than expected. So, why is The Batman 2 movie taking so long to hit theaters?

One of the main reasons for the delay in the release of The Batman 2 movie is the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The production of the first movie was already impacted by the pandemic, causing delays in filming and post-production. With the situation still not fully under control, it is likely that the production of the sequel is facing similar challenges.

Another factor contributing to the delay could be the busy schedules of the cast and crew. The Batman movie featured an all-star cast, including Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, and Colin Farrell, who are all in high demand in Hollywood. Coordinating their schedules to film the sequel could be proving to be a logistical challenge.

Additionally, director Matt Reeves may be taking his time to ensure that the sequel lives up to the success of the first movie. With high expectations from fans and critics alike, Reeves may be working meticulously to perfect the script, visuals, and overall tone of The Batman 2.

While the wait for The Batman 2 may be frustrating for fans, it is important to remember that good things come to those who wait. With the talented team behind the movie and the dedication to delivering a quality sequel, it is likely that The Batman 2 will be worth the wait. Stay tuned for updates on the release date of The Batman 2 movie!
