  • Ticketmaster UK boss tells MPs prices are very fair

The boss of Ticketmaster UK has told MPs tickets are” very fairly priced”.

Andrew Parsons was appearing before the Business and Trade Select Committee, after fans slammed his company’s “dynamic pricing” of Oasis reunion-tour tickets last summer.

The company did not set ticket prices, which were decided ahead of sales, he said.

“Where differing price tiers [are] made available, that’s a choice of the event organiser. Selling a small amount of tickets at a higher-priced tier seems fairly reasonable.”

Many fans said they had paid significantly more than expected for tickets to see Oasis – up to £350 per ticket, about £200 more than advertised.

But Mr Parsons denied prices fluctuated during a general sale.

    ‘Gobbled up’

“We work closely with event organisers to be able sell tickets at the prices that they’ve determined,” he told the committee.

“There’s no technology-driven change to those prices.

“They are the prices which humans have agreed to.

“There’s not a computer or a bot behind it.”

The band themselves had also hit out at the system, saying: “It needs to be made clear that Oasis leave decisions on ticketing and pricing entirely to their promoters and management.”

But Mr Parsons told the committee: “If we’re not able to [capture] that value, which the artist is doing in those instances, then that money is just going to go, and the tickets are going to be captured and gobbled up by touts.”

The MPs did not ask about the Oasis sale specifically, as the Competitions and Markets Authority (CMA) is looking into whether Ticketmaster breached consumer-protection law.

    Clamp down

Ticketmaster’s parent company, Live Nation, is the world’s biggest live events promoter.

And Charlie Maynard MP urged the CMA, also represented at the hearing, to launch a separate investigation into Live Nation’s “dominant market share”.

But Mr Parsons told the committee Ticketmaster and Live Nation “have clear divides between how we operate on a daily basis” and the UK ticketing market was “as competitive as any market in the world”.

Ticketmaster UK also commented on the government’s public consultation which has proposed a range of actions including a cap of up to 30% on the resale of tickets.

Mr Parsons said the company was in favour of a cap but that “30% still gives the opportunity for touts to be able to be running a business in that manner”.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy announced plans last month to clamp down on touts who bulk-buy tickets and then resell them for huge profits.

Ticketmaster UK boss defends ticket prices, says they are “very fair”

During a recent hearing with MPs, the boss of Ticketmaster UK defended the ticket prices for events, stating that they are “very fair” and reflect the value of the experience being offered to customers.

In response to concerns raised about the high cost of tickets for popular events, the Ticketmaster UK boss explained that pricing is based on a variety of factors, including demand, production costs, and the artist’s fees. He emphasized that Ticketmaster works to ensure that tickets are priced appropriately to ensure the sustainability of the live events industry.

The boss also highlighted that Ticketmaster offers a range of ticket options, including early bird discounts, group rates, and package deals, to make events more accessible to a wider audience.

Overall, the Ticketmaster UK boss maintained that the company is committed to providing a fair and transparent ticketing system that benefits both customers and event organizers.

  • Opposition MPs stage walkout amid Nirmala Sitharaman’s Budget speech

Several opposition MPs staged a walkout during Nirmala Sitharaman’s Budget speech. They were demanding a discussion on the Mahakumbh stampede and walked out to mark their protest.

Opposition MPs shout slogans, right, during presentation of the Union Budget.

After the symbolic walkout, all MPs who went out joined the ongoing parliament session.

At least 30 people died and over 60 were injured in the stampede last week. The opposition blamed the BJP-led UP government’s mismanagement for the tragedy.

    Nirmala Sitharaman presents Budget 2025

Nirmala Sitharaman presented her eighth consecutive budget in the Parliament. In her opening remarks, she said the government will realise the ‘sab ka vikas’ goal by stimulating balanced growth for all regions.

“Our economy is the fastest growing among all major economies. Our development track record for the past 10 years and structural reforms have drawn global attention. Confidence in India’s capability and potential has only grown in this period. We see the next 5 years as a unique opportunity to realise sabka vikas, stimulating balanced growth of all regions” she said.

She also stressed unlocking the potential of India’s marine sector and said that the government will bring a framework for the sustainable harnessing of fisheries with a special focus on the Andaman and Lakshadweep zones.

“India ranks second largest globally in fish production and aquaculture. Seafood exports are valued at 60,000 crore rupees. To unlock the untapped potential of the marine sector, our government will bring in an enabling framework for the sustainable harnessing of fisheries from the Indian inclusive economic zone and high seas with a special focus on the Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep islands,” she said.

She also highlighted a national mission for cotton production farmers.

“For the benefit of lakhs of cotton-growing farmers, I am pleased to announce a mission for cotton productivity. This five-year mission will facilitate significant improvements in the productivity and sustainability of cotton farming and promote extra-long staple cotton varieties. The best of science and technology support will be provided to farmers,” Sitharaman added.

The Finance Minister also mentioned that the government will establish a Makhana Board in Bihar to benefit farmers in the area.

“Makhna Board will be established in Bihar to improve production, processing, value addition and marketing of Makhana. The people engaged in these activities will be organized into FPOs. The board will provide handholding and training support to Makhana farmers and will also work to ensure they receive the benefits of all relevant government schemes,” she said.

Opposition MPs stage walkout amid Nirmala Sitharaman’s Budget speech

In a dramatic turn of events during Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s Budget speech, opposition members of Parliament staged a walkout in protest. As Sitharaman began outlining the government’s fiscal plans for the upcoming year, members from various opposition parties stood up and walked out of the Lok Sabha, expressing their dissatisfaction with the budget proposals.

The opposition MPs criticized the government’s budget, calling it “anti-people” and “pro-corporate.” They raised concerns about the lack of measures to address the economic challenges facing the country, as well as the government’s handling of issues such as unemployment, inflation, and farmer distress.

Despite the opposition walkout, Sitharaman continued with her speech, highlighting the government’s priorities and initiatives to boost economic growth and development. She defended the budget as being in the best interest of the nation and emphasized the need for fiscal discipline and prudent financial management.

The walkout by opposition MPs added a dramatic twist to an already highly anticipated Budget session, setting the stage for further debates and discussions on the government’s economic policies and priorities. As the country awaits further details and analysis of the budget proposals, the walkout by opposition members serves as a reminder of the deep divisions and disagreements that exist within the political landscape of India.

  • Elon Musk’s calls for Tommy Robinson release anger Labour MPs | Elon Musk

Elon Musk’s calls for Tommy Robinson release anger Labour MPs | Elon Musk

Elon Musk has caused anger by calling for the release of Tommy Robinson and accusing Keir Starmer of failing to prosecute child rapists in Oldham in Greater Manchester.

The billionaire ally of Donald Trump pinned a message at the top of his X feed overnight saying “Free Tommy Robinson!”, tagging the far-right activist who is in jail for contempt of court.

As well as a number of messages in support of Robinson, Musk posted several times about rape gangs in Rochdale and Oldham, attacking the prime minister and the safeguarding minister, Jess Phillips, over their responses to the scandal.

In one post Musk said: “In the UK, serious crimes such as rape require the Crown Prosecution Service’s approval for the police to charge suspects. Who was the head of the CPS when rape gangs were allowed to exploit young girls without facing justice? Keir Starmer, 2008-2013.”

He added that Phillips “deserved to be in prison” after she said it was for Oldham council to call an inquiry into child exploitation there, rather than the national government.

In another he said: “The real reason she’s refusing to investigate the rape gangs is that it would obviously lead to the blaming of Keir Stamer (head of the [Crown Prosecution Service] at the time).”

Musk reposted several comments calling for the release of Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, who was jailed last October for repeating false allegations about a Syrian refugee.

Musk’s latest intervention in British politics has caused anger among Labour MPs, many of whom have been pushing the government to stop posting on X.

The Tesla co-founder and X owner has repeatedly attacked Starmer over the prime minister’s response to the UK riots last summer. He is reported to be considering donating as much as $100m (£80m) to Reform UK, and was pictured alongside the party’s leader, Nigel Farage, and its treasurer, Nick Candy, two weeks ago.

Musk’s posts overnight are his most explicit endorsement yet of the British far right and come after he promised to support the German anti-migration party Alternative für Deutschland.

One MP said: “[Musk] has pushed it too far this time. Twitter [now X] is really rapidly becoming a cess pit, even for disinterested non-partisan types.”

Several ministers said they thought this should be the trigger for the government to leave Musk’s platform. Others, however, warned that doing so could cause a diplomatic incident given Musk’s role in the incoming Trump administration.

    Downing Street declined to comment.

A spokesperson for Reform UK would not say whether the billionaire’s endorsement of Robinson – a divisive figure within the party – would change its willingness to accept his money.

A spokesperson for Oldham council said: “Survivors sit at the heart of our work to end child sexual exploitation. Whatever happens in terms of future inquiries, we have promised them that their wishes will be paramount, and we will not renege on that pledge.

“We all recognise that terrible mistakes were made in the past, with children ignored or dismissed. By ensuring that survivors have a voice that is heard, we can help make sure that no child will be failed in the future.”

Elon Musk’s recent tweets calling for the release of far-right activist Tommy Robinson have sparked outrage among Labour MPs. The tech billionaire’s vocal support for Robinson, who was jailed for contempt of court, has been met with criticism from many in the UK’s political sphere.

Labour MPs have condemned Musk’s comments, with many accusing him of endorsing hate speech and extremism. They have called on the billionaire to retract his statements and instead support efforts to combat hate and discrimination.

Musk’s controversial stance on Robinson’s case has further divided opinions on the issue, with some defending his right to free speech and others denouncing his support for a figure known for spreading divisive and harmful rhetoric.

It remains to be seen how Musk’s comments will impact his reputation and relationship with political figures in the UK, but one thing is clear: his calls for Robinson’s release have not been well-received by many in the Labour party.
