  • Mum, 42, among eight Britons charged over ‘£9.5m Spanish holiday food poisoning scam’ | World | News

A British mum has been charged along with several others over an alledged scam that saw hotels pay out £9.5million on bogus food poisoning complaints. The scammers allegedly targeted hotels on the island of Majorca by encouraging tourists to make up food poisoning claims as part of a money-making racket. A mother from Essex has been charged with running the suspected along with seven other Britons.

Laura Joyce,42, from Essex was charged along with her brother Marc Cameron.

The siblings have been accused of being the ringleaders of a “profit-motivated organised gang”.

They are believed to have run the racket under the guise of a Spanish company called Elite Project Marketing SL.

Joyce and Cameron now face trial alongside five other Britons they are alleged to have recruited to entice holidaymakers into playing along in scam, along with the UK-based businessman who managed the process.

The suspected scammers have been accused of fraud and membership of a criminal gang.”

Those charged have been named as Ryan Bridges, Simon Robert Flanagan, Tegan Jewel Sumerlee, Susan Amanda Lyle, Nicola Marie Sanderson and Peter Carl Murphy.

A court ruling in Majorca read: “The gang specialised in obtaining the details of British tourists in all-inclusive hotels in Majorca it convinced, through a form they themselves elaborated, to falsely claim they had been ill during their stay in one of those hotels and be able to claim compensation in the UK.”

Police detectives believe the scammers’ activities cost three hotel groups around £9.5 million between 2016 and 2017.

A heavily pregnant Joyce was arrested in September 2017 before making a court appearance in May 2018.

Joyce’s lawyer Gabriel Llado has said his client confessed to handing over contact details of holidaymakers for payment but insisted this was done as part of a market research venture.

He denied that Joyce or any of the individuals she used to gather information from tourists had encouraged them to falsify food poisoning claims using chemist receipts.

    DON’T MISS:

He stated that Joyce had only been involved in this activity for a short period of time and quit because she was not earning enough.

The 42-year-old who was charged under her maiden name Cameron denies her role in the scam.

    Additional reporting by Gerard Couzens.

In a shocking turn of events, a British mother, aged 42, has been charged alongside seven other Britons in connection with a £9.5m holiday food poisoning scam in Spain. The group is accused of filing fraudulent claims for food poisoning during their vacations in order to receive compensation.

Authorities in Spain have been cracking down on this type of scam, which has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. The accused individuals are facing serious charges of fraud and could potentially face significant penalties if found guilty.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of trying to cheat the system for personal gain. It is a sobering reminder that dishonesty and deceit will eventually catch up with you.

As the investigation continues, it is important for tourists to be vigilant and honest when it comes to making claims for compensation. This type of behavior not only harms the reputation of genuine victims of food poisoning but also puts a strain on the resources of the travel industry.

Let this be a cautionary tale for anyone considering taking advantage of the system for financial gain. The consequences are not worth the risk.

  • Ranji Trophy – Mum vs K&K – Rohit Sharma’s Ranji return lasts 19 balls as he falls for 3 against J&K

Rohit Sharma‘s return to the Ranji Trophy was a short-lived one – he lasted 19 balls and scored just three in Mumbai’s Group A fixture against Jammu and Kashmir at the Sharad Pawar Academy in BKC in Mumbai.

Rohit, India’s Test and ODI captain who has been going through a terrible run of form, was the focus of a lot of attention in the lead-up to the game as soon as he confirmed his presence in the game with a nod and “I will” at the Champions Trophy squad announcement press conference last week. With a white floppy hat and sunglasses on, Rohit was relaxed before the game, joking with his team-mates as they warmed up with some head volleyball.

But he wore a determined look as he walked out to open with his regular India opening partner in Tests, Yashasvi Jaiswal, after Mumbai’s captain Ajinkya Rahane opted to bat. To accommodate Rohit and Jaiswal at the top, Mumbai had to leave out Ayush Mhatre, who, in his debut season, has been one of Mumbai’s star performers: 408 runs from nine innings at an average of 45.33 with two centuries.

It was a cool winter morning in Mumbai, a relief after a week that saw temperatures touch the mid-30s. And J&K’s opening bowlers made sure to make use of the early-morning nip.

Auqib Nabi conceded a four early in the opening over but then tightened his lines; Rohit got off the mark with a single through the on side. But he was given a proper work over by Umar Nazir Mir, who bowled two successive maidens to him. Mir maintained a consistent line outside off and varied his lengths a touch, not allowing Rohit to get going.

Rohit managed to drive a Nabi delivery through the covers for a couple in the next over but once again was kept quiet by Mir, who got his reward on his 17th ball. He bowled a length delivery on the fifth stump, with a hint of movement away from the right-hand batter. Rohit looked to play his trademark pick-up shot over midwicket but only managed to get a leading edge to the off side. Paras Dogra ran a few yards to his left from mid-off to extra cover, called loud and clear, and pouched it to end Rohit’s stay in the middle.

The short stay in the middle meant that Rohit’s lean run in red-ball cricket continued. Across five home Tests against Bangladesh and New Zealand at home last year, he had just one half-century to show – against New Zealand in Bengaluru – with four single-digit scores across ten innings. He also had just one double-digit score in five innings in Australia, where he played in three of the five Test matches. He finished the 2024-25 Test season with a batting average of 10.93.

Indeed, Rohit’s first-class batting average of 10.43 across 16 innings in the 2024-25 season is the second-lowest for any batter since 2006 (for a minimum of 15 innings while batting in the top six). England’s Haseeb Hameed averaged 9.44 across 18 innings in the 2018 season.

Before Rohit, Jaiswal fell. Nabi managed to get his line right against the left-hand batter, getting a couple of balls to move away. One of those narrowly missed the outside edge of Jaiswal’s bat – a muted appeal was given not out. On the next ball – the third ball of the third over – Nabi got a length ball to jag back viciously; Jaiswal was caught off-guard, and was beaten on the inside edge and hit on the back leg right in front of middle and leg. He was quite deep in the crease and the umpire took little time in raising the finger. Jaiswal, who was one of India’s most successful batters at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, dragged himself off with 4 against his name.

Ranji Trophy – Mum vs K&K: Rohit Sharma’s Ranji return lasts 19 balls as he falls for 3 against J&K

In a highly anticipated Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Jammu & Kashmir, all eyes were on Rohit Sharma as he made his Ranji return after a long hiatus. However, the Indian cricket team’s captain’s comeback did not go as planned as he was dismissed for just 3 runs after facing 19 balls.

Rohit Sharma, who is known for his explosive batting and big scores in international cricket, was expected to make a big impact in the domestic circuit as well. But the J&K bowlers had other plans as they managed to get the better of him early in his innings.

Despite the setback, Mumbai managed to put up a decent total on the board, thanks to some resilient batting from the rest of the team. However, Jammu & Kashmir put up a strong fight and managed to chase down the target with ease.

It was a disappointing start to the season for Rohit Sharma, but knowing his talent and ability to bounce back, we can expect him to come back stronger in the upcoming matches. The Ranji Trophy is a great platform for him to get some match practice and find his form before the upcoming international assignments.

Overall, it was an exciting match with some great performances from both sides, but the spotlight was definitely on Rohit Sharma’s short-lived return to Ranji cricket. Let’s hope he can make a strong comeback in the next game and show why he is considered one of the best batsmen in the world.

  • Live Cricket Update – MUM vs J + K Elite, Group A

Mumbai, who have 22 points in five matches, need at least one win to go beyond J&K’s 23 to get into the knockouts of the Ranji Trophy from Group A. With a star-studded line-up consisting of India returnees Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, as well as Mumbai regulars Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube and Shardul Thakur, Mumbai would have been quietly confident of doing well at the Sharad Pawar Academy, a venue that players generally prefer playing at.

On a cool Mumbai morning – a welcome dip in temperatures in the city following a hot winter week – J&K fast bowlers have looked more at home that the hosts. After Auqib Nabi trapped Jaiswal lbw with a nip-backer, Umar Nazir Mir reaped rewards of bowling with a lot of discipline. Mir bowled back-to-back maidens before dismissing Rohit and then castled Rahane after luring him with a drive.

Shreyas Iyer hit a first-ball six to get going but Mir then changed ends and struck twice. He first had Hardik Tamore miss a flick to get him lbw and then had Dube caught behind with the slightest of deviations. Having opted to bat first, Mumbai are 42 for 5 after 15 overs, a picture they wouldn’t have wildly dreamt of about an hour ago.

The match between Mumbai and Jammu and Kashmir in the Elite Group A of the Ranji Trophy is currently underway. Stay tuned for live updates on the thrilling cricket action! #RanjiTrophy #MUMvsJK #LiveCricketUpdate

Andrew Garfield on baking cookies and keeping perfume to remember his mum | Ents & Arts News

Andrew Garfield says he bakes cookies every year in memory of his late mother.

The double Oscar nominee‘s mother Lynn Garfield, from Essex, died in 2019 from pancreatic cancer.

In a conversation about his new film We Live In Time, he told Sky News about the special ways he likes to remember her.

“My mum had the most incredible chocolate chip cookie recipe that I will do every year on the anniversary of her birth and on the anniversary of her death.

“So, I will bake them, and we will all eat them, but I’ll leave a few out for her somewhere, you know, like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer or Santa Claus at Christmas or something.”

The English-American actor says he looks to keep the connection to his mother alive and notes that he has some of her keepsakes in his own home.

“I have her perfume in my house that my mum used to wear when I was a kid. I have it, like, in a very special place. I’ll just like [smell it], when I need it.

“It’s like in the missing and the longing, you actually get closer to the person. It’s a weird thing. As we reach out in grief, we actually feel much closer to the person so it’s this weird conundrum”.

    ‘Leaving a legacy behind’

Garfield stars alongside Florence Pugh in the romance film We Live In Time, which follows an up-and-coming chef and a Weetabix salesman through a decade of their love story.

Pugh says she loves playing “really strong-willed women” and says playing a woman dealing with ovarian cancer allowed her to look at the idea of creating a legacy.

“She’s constantly juggling whether she does something for herself, does something for her daughter, does something for her family and ultimately, she’s allowed to do all of those things.

“I do believe that she is trying to leave that kind of legacy behind so that her daughter is proud of her.

“Just because you are a parent and you’re a mum does not mean that your wills and wants also completely vanish and disappear and you can’t have or want them too”.

‘A level of detail and care’

We Live In Time is directed by Brooklyn filmmaker John Crowley.

Having previously worked with Garfield on Boy A, the Irish director says seeing Garfield and Pugh on screen together is magic.

“All that life experience is present in his performance,” he says.

“I wouldn’t say he’s vastly different. I think the level of detail and care that he puts in the work is every bit as much as it was back then, there’s just more there now”.

We Live In Time is in cinemas on Wednesday 1 January.

Andrew Garfield, best known for his roles in “The Social Network” and “The Amazing Spider-Man,” recently opened up about his love for baking cookies and keeping perfume to remember his late mother.

In a heartfelt interview, Garfield revealed that baking cookies was a cherished pastime he shared with his mother, who passed away when he was young. He spoke fondly of the memories they shared in the kitchen, creating delicious treats and bonding over their love of baking.

Garfield also shared that he keeps a bottle of his mother’s favorite perfume to remember her by. He explained that the scent brings back memories of her presence and helps him feel connected to her, even after all these years.

The actor’s openness about his personal life and the importance of these simple rituals in keeping his mother’s memory alive is a touching reminder of the power of small gestures in honoring loved ones who have passed.

Fans of Garfield were moved by his heartfelt words and took to social media to express their support and admiration for the actor’s vulnerability. Many shared their own stories of loss and the ways in which they keep the memories of their loved ones alive through similar acts of remembrance.

It’s clear that Andrew Garfield’s love for baking cookies and keeping his mother’s perfume close to his heart are not just simple rituals, but powerful symbols of love and connection that transcend time and space.
