KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) – KCTV5 – and CBS stations across the country – will broadcast the Musial Awards on Dec. 29 at 4 p.m. CT. The awards, named after St. Louis Cardinals legend Stan Musial, celebrate athletes with the best sportsmanship.
Royals catcher Salvador Perez is one of this year’s recipients. Perez captured the hearts of baseball fans everywhere when he surprised some KCK kids and joined their wiffle ball game in August.
Fast forward a few months, and those same kids got the chance to present Perez with the Musial Award at a pre-recorded ceremony in November.
“[Salvy] was smiling so much, but I was shaking so much,” said Cameron, one of the kids in Salvy’s Sandlot Crew, of presenting the award. “All my friends were really shaking, too.”
The Sandlot Crew never thought any of this would happen.
“It’s just like, ‘How did this little 10-minute baseball game in our backyard turn into this?’” said Lesley Lard, Cameron’s mom. “I think it exploded because it was heartwarming and it’s going to affect these boys forever.”
Presenting Salvy with his award is a moment the Sandlot Crew will remember forever.
“Going to St. Louis, that was probably the best experience of my life,” said Cameron.
“We were like, ‘That is so crazy. I can’t believe we just did that!” said Henry, another member of the crew. “It’s scary, but it was also cool at the same time because you get to see all the people looking at you on the big stage with all the lights and stuff.”
The Sandlot Crew says – as odd as it sounds – that Salvy feels like one of their friends now. One of the Sandlot moms says Salvy sets a great example for the kids.
“We’ve all been told or seen, ‘He’s just a big kid out there playing,’ but he just feels like such a real person now more than before,” Lesley Lard said. “It just kind of brings him down to where these guys can see anybody can do great things, no matter where you are at.”
