    “I asked Tom if I could be an honorary Heartbreaker,” Stevie Nicks recalled of asking Tom Petty if she could join her all-time favourite band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreaks – “He said, ‘You already are one, Stevie.’” Nicks has never made any secret of her deep love for Petty’s band, but the lead singer wasn’t the only band member to grant her a beautiful gift as she has a moving experience working with Mike Campbell once too.

    “So, listen, what I’d really like to do is be in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ band,” Nicks recalled telling Atlantic Records when she launched her solo career. While taking a break from her role as Fleetwood Mac’s resident witchy poet, all she wanted to do was feel like a rockstar, taking inspiration from her peers but especially from Petty and his troupe.

    So when she got to work with the band on Bella Donna, her solo debut, it was a dream realised. From then on, Petty proved to be a constant source of inspiration and encouragement. After a stint in rehab knocked her confidence as an artist, leading her to ask him if he would write a song for her to sing, Petty put her back on track, telling Nicks, “No. You are one of the premier songwriters of all time. You don’t need me to write a song for you,” adding, “Just go to your piano and write a good song. You can do that.”

    But all the members of the Heartbreakers did a lot for Nicks, encouraging her when she needed encouragement, helping her when she needed help, and, in the case of guitarist Mike Campbell, granting her a gift that no one else had.

    Working together on the song ‘Whole Lotta Trouble’ for her 1989 album The Other Side Of The Mirror, Campbell’s treatment of the song meant a lot to Nicks. “I recorded this song in Michael’s room in Sydney, Australia, on his 4-track. I actually played guitar, and almost a year later, Michael had worked up a track right along with what I had played in Australia,” she recalled of the song’s origins. But it was less his additional work on the song that moved her and more that way that he had stayed true to her initial idea as she explained, “He wrote a bridge for it, and when I got home from MY tour, he insisted I come up and sing it exactly as I had played it that night; and he could play his track right along with me playing rock and roll guitar.”

    Keeping the original spark of the song intact and working solely from her early idea, Campbell’s dedication to preserving Nicks’ vision meant a lot, as the singer said, “I was totally flattered.”

    Coming from Fleetwood Mac, where even her own songs ended up as collaborations, impacted by her band members, this moment with Campbell felt like the first time her vision had been left untouched. “He is the only person in my whole life who has EVER done one of my songs exactly as I had written it,” she said, seeing that as an incredible gift the guitarist gave her as she said sincerely. “Thank you, Michael, for all your wonderful music.”

  • Iconic musician and famous comedian address half-brother rumors


    Musician Billy Corgan and comedian Bill Burr aren’t actual related. But that doesn’t mean they won’t get a kick out of the self-started rumors.

    This past November, Corgan was a guest on the “Howie Mandel Does Stuff” podcast. During the episode, Mandel’s production team accidentally put up a picture of Burr instead of Corgan. The Smashing Pumpkins guitarist/frontman went with it and comprised an elaborate story, considering they could be half brothers.

    “Most of my friends don’t even know this story,” Corgan said. “About 10 years ago, one of my brothers was having a birthday party, and my stepmother was there, who was obviously married to my father. And my stepmother said to me, ‘Do you know who Bill Burr is?’ Now at that point, I had never heard of Bill Burr. I didn’t know who he was. I didn’t know he was a comedian or anything. He could have been the guy down the street.”

    Corgan then continued the story, like one of those fables you hear around the campfire at summer camp.

    “I thought the first thing she was going to say was, ‘Oh, I thought you’d notice the resemblance,’” said Corgan. ”She goes, ‘I think it might be one of your father’s illegitimate children. Bill Burr might be one of the children that your father sired in his days being a traveling musician.’ This is a true story. I’m not making this up; there is no joke in this.”

    Mandel had something up his sleeve in his new episode on Tuesday, with Burr now being in the guest chair. Thirty minutes in, Mandel brought out Corgan as a surprise.

    “Did you ever think the fact that I never told that story, that maybe you shouldn’t?” Burr says to Corgan. “It’s not that I don’t like [Corgan], it reminds me of all of that s—.”

    Throughout the rest of the episode, both Corgan and Burr play along with the story — even going as far as trading stories about their “dad.” In the end, Corgan and Burr are siblings in the same way actors Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson (not at all).

    OGDEN — Utah-native and retired musician Wayne Osmond is dead at 73 years old, sources close to the Osmond family confirmed on Thursday.

    Growing to prominence throughout the 1960s and 1970s along with his three brothers Alan, Merrill and Jay, Wayne Osmond was one-fourth of the Osmond Brothers quartet.

    Wayne Osmond was most known for his backup vocals and for being a talented and well-rounded musician who was proficient in playing everything from a guitar to a bagpipe.

    Born in Ogden in 1951, Wayne Osmond and his family were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

    In 1974, Wayne Osmond married Kathlyn Louise White, a Bountiful native and former Miss Davis County Fair and Miss Utah of 1974.

    Across 50 years of marriage, the couple raised five children together and eventually became grandparents.

    Wayne Osmond was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1997, which was successfully treated. Eventually, Wayne Osmond retired from his musical pursuits due to a hearing problem.
